  1. Well, please do sit down.

  2. Before we start properly, I do want to thank Paul for his welcome.

  3. Thank you all for your welcome.

  4. And thank you for your prayers for us over the last few months.

  5. We really appreciate it.

  6. I know some kind offers of help as well.

  7. So thank you.

  8. Thank you very much.

  9. It's nice to be back.

  10. It's nice to stand up here in the new building for the first time.

  11. It's even greater.

  12. Better bring God's word to you.

  13. Let's pray together again.

  14. Almighty God, our Father, it is wonderful to sing these truths about the power of the cross.

  15. Christ became sin for us.

  16. Heavenly Father, we pray that you'd send your spirit now.

  17. For flesh cannot discern the things of the spirit.

  18. Help me to handle these unfathomable truths.

  19. With reverence and awe.

  20. And by the power of your spirit, help us to grasp afresh something of the magnitude of your love for us in Christ Jesus.

  21. And the hideous nature of our sin and what it deserves.

  22. For we ask it in the precious, powerful name of Jesus, your only Son.

  23. Amen.

  24. Amen.

  25. Many of you will know, and my wife can confirm this, and my children, I am not the most observant person in the world.

  26. If there is a bird in the garden, I will be the last to see it.

  27. And when it comes to things that I kind of see every day, I'm completely useless.

  28. Does he wear glasses?

  29. I have no idea.

  30. What color is the wallpaper?

  31. What color is our bedroom painted?

  32. I don't know.

  33. Is it Magnolia?

  34. Probably.

  35. That's what I wanted everything to be, because that makes my life simple.

  36. I just don't recognize things that are in front of me.

  37. And the danger, as we look at the crucifixion of our Lord Jesus, is this is a story we know so well.

  38. We're familiar with it.

  39. If you've been a Christian for any length of time, or around church for any length of time,

  40. you'll be aware of the doctrine of the atonement and what it meant.

  41. And yet, it can be like wallpaper.

  42. Paul, in writing to the Galatians, one of the earliest letters in the New Testament,

  43. he says to them at the start of the chapter 3,

  44. you foolish Galatians, who has bewitched you that you'd be turning to another gospel which is no gospel?

  45. It was before your eyes that Jesus Christ was publicly portrayed as crucified.

  46. And so this morning, I hope that by God's grace, Jesus Christ will be publicly portrayed as crucified.

  47. That he might grip our attention.

  48. And that we might not turn to the various false gospels, the self-help, the freedom by following your desires,

  49. and all the other nonsense that is around us in the world, and yet can seem so attractive,

  50. and come back again to Christ and not be bewitched.

  51. Well, I am a child of the 1970s, I'm pleased to admit to.

  52. And that meant when I was learning to cross the road, I was helped by the Green Cross code man,

  53. who very simply said, stop, look, listen.

  54. And having done that, decide to respond safely in whether you cross the road or not.

  55. So this morning, very simply, I want us to stop, to look, to listen,

  56. and then to respond to what we have seen and heard.

  57. So first of all, let's look, especially in verses 32 to 39,

  58. as Matthew trains his camera on this scene,

  59. and highlights particular things he wants us to see.

  60. And what do we see as we look at this man stumbling out of Jerusalem,

  61. with a cross beam of a cross on his back?

  62. It's a scene of complete horror and humiliation, isn't it?

  63. When we sit and look at it.

  64. Complete horror and humiliation.

  65. For a start, the very location of it.

  66. He is outside the city, verse 32,

  67. as they went out.

  68. So they go out of the city.

  69. This crucifixion is so horrible.

  70. It has to take place out of the city.

  71. It's beyond the pale.

  72. You can't be part of society and be crucified.

  73. In fact, the Romans would often have crucifixions in a very public place,

  74. where people coming into a city could see it.

  75. So they would learn the lesson from it.

  76. And so here it is.

  77. This man, Jesus,

  78. is facing the most horrendous death of all.

  79. Crucifixion, Cicero wrote,

  80. should be farthest from the mind of the Roman citizen.

  81. It is the lowest of the low.

  82. No Roman citizen could be crucified

  83. except with the express order of Caesar.

  84. It was left for the slaves and the lowest in society.

  85. Deliberately public example.

  86. It's horrific.

  87. But also look at the horror

  88. and the humiliation of this sight.

  89. As they went out,

  90. they found a man of Cyrene named Simon by name.

  91. They compelled him to carry his cross.

  92. Why?

  93. Because Jesus was so weak.

  94. He'd been, after all,

  95. he'd been up all night.

  96. Been marched backwards and forwards through the city

  97. for his trial.

  98. In the previous scene,

  99. we didn't look at.

  100. He'd been flogged and mocked and beaten.

  101. As he comes out of the city now,

  102. there's blood from where the crown of thorns had been

  103. on his head.

  104. There's blood dripping from his back,

  105. from his scourging.

  106. It's a horrible sight.

  107. And he is weak.

  108. He's not like the James Bond action figure

  109. who can come out of the destroyed building

  110. and yet still be all guns blazing

  111. and kill the enemy.

  112. He has no strength left to carry his own cross.

  113. It's pitiful.

  114. It's humiliating.

  115. And look closely at who do we see with him?

  116. No one.

  117. No one.

  118. It's a horror and humiliation

  119. of facing this dark hour on his own.

  120. Paul read earlier on in our prayers

  121. from Psalm 88

  122. that darkness was his closest friend.

  123. That was true for the Lord Jesus.

  124. The previous night,

  125. as he was arrested,

  126. all his disciples disappeared

  127. into the darkness.

  128. Ashamed and scared,

  129. they ran away.

  130. It's now humiliated,

  131. horrifically alone.

  132. He comes out of the city.

  133. As we go on,

  134. verse 34,

  135. they offered him wine to drink

  136. mixed with gall.

  137. But when he tasted it,

  138. he would not drink it.

  139. It's like the sufferer

  140. in Psalm 69.

  141. The humiliation of getting something

  142. that should be comforting,

  143. but is not.

  144. It's a cruel,

  145. mocking joke.

  146. It wasn't something

  147. to satisfy his thirst.

  148. As the psalmist says

  149. in Psalm 69,

  150. I looked for pity,

  151. but there was none.

  152. For comforters,

  153. but I found none.

  154. They gave me poison

  155. for my food,

  156. and for my thirst,

  157. they gave me sour wine

  158. to drink.

  159. It's humiliating, isn't it?

  160. They mock him.

  161. And there's the horror

  162. and humiliation

  163. of his powerlessness.

  164. Verse 39,

  165. when they crucified him,

  166. they divided his garments

  167. among them

  168. by casting lots.

  169. Now, if we lived

  170. in the first century,

  171. we'd know fine well

  172. that to be crucified

  173. would mean to hang there

  174. naked, exposed,

  175. humiliated.

  176. And it's the powerlessness

  177. of it, isn't it?

  178. The soldier's just

  179. playing dice for his clothes

  180. as he hangs there,

  181. humiliated above them.

  182. And if you and I

  183. were good first century Jews,

  184. we'd see another level

  185. of humiliation here.

  186. For the law of God

  187. stated very clearly,

  188. Deuteronomy 21, 23,

  189. that anyone who is hung

  190. on a cross

  191. is under the curse of God.

  192. And see,

  193. we see this man

  194. who'd ridden into town

  195. just a few days earlier,

  196. being acclaimed

  197. as a king,

  198. coming in the name

  199. of David

  200. and the coming kingdom.

  201. Yet here he is,

  202. publicly,

  203. horrifically,

  204. humiliated,

  205. in front of our very eyes,

  206. under the curse of God.

  207. And if we're sensitive

  208. to what Matthew

  209. is showing us,

  210. we see it as the horror

  211. and humiliation

  212. of a king.

  213. because that's the overall

  214. picture here.

  215. We would have seen it

  216. in the previous scene

  217. where the Roman soldiers

  218. mocked him,

  219. gave him a reed,

  220. gave him a crown

  221. of thorns,

  222. dressed him in a purple robe

  223. and mocked the idea

  224. of him being king.

  225. We see it in the sign

  226. above his head,

  227. verse 37.

  228. This is Jesus,

  229. the king of the Jews,

  230. hanging between two robbers.

  231. We see it most of all

  232. in the expert way

  233. Matthew sets up his camera

  234. like a brilliant movie producer,

  235. showing us scenes

  236. which echo

  237. and show signs of,

  238. scenes from previous movies.

  239. So Matthew highlights

  240. what looks like Psalm 22,

  241. which David starts

  242. by saying,

  243. my God, my God,

  244. why have you forsaken me?

  245. The very worst,

  246. Jesus will cry out

  247. in a few hours,

  248. a few verses later.

  249. He deliberately points

  250. to the camera

  251. so he can see

  252. all that being echoed.

  253. And the question behind it

  254. is,

  255. who is God's king?

  256. Who is God's king?

  257. Which kingdom rules here?

  258. The kingdom of Pilate?

  259. The kingdom of the world?

  260. The kingdom

  261. of the religious leaders?

  262. Or the kingdom

  263. of this humiliated,

  264. horrific-looking man

  265. rejected by God?

  266. And of course,

  267. the answer,

  268. if we know Psalm 22,

  269. is that what starts

  270. with suffering

  271. and humiliation

  272. and rejection

  273. ends in victory.

  274. Psalm 22,

    Psalms 22:28

  275. verse 28,

  276. for kingship

  277. belongs to the Lord

  278. and he rules

  279. over the nations.

  280. This is the humiliation

  281. of God's king.

  282. And we should ask,

  283. shouldn't we,

  284. why is this happening?

  285. We could give

  286. all sorts of answers.

  287. We could say

  288. it's because of the envy

  289. of the religious leaders.

  290. And certainly,

  291. that's something

  292. Pilate had noticed

  293. back in verse 18.

  294. We could say

  295. it's because

  296. Pilate is a coward

  297. and despite

  298. declaring Jesus

  299. to be innocent,

  300. still gave in

  301. because he feared a riot.

  302. And there might be

  303. some truth in that,

  304. verse 24.

  305. But Matthew,

  306. the gospel writer,

  307. wants us to see

  308. another truth,

  309. a deeper,

  310. more profound mystery.

  311. This is happening

  312. because the night before,

  313. Jesus had knelt

  314. in Gethsemane.

  315. Chapter 26,

  316. verse 39,

  317. and prayed,

  318. my father,

  319. if it be possible,

  320. let this cup,

  321. this suffering,

  322. this horrific humiliation

  323. pass from me.

  324. Nevertheless,

  325. not as I will,

  326. but what you will.

  327. That cup,

  328. that horrific humiliation

  329. was God's right anger,

  330. right punishment,

  331. his settled personal hostility

  332. against all this evil

  333. in the world,

  334. against all our sin,

  335. all our self-centeredness,

  336. all the ways we swallow

  337. Satan's lie that says,

  338. God is not good.

  339. God doesn't really love you.

  340. All our gossip,

  341. all our comparing ourselves

  342. to other people,

  343. all our self-satisfaction,

  344. all our little selfish moments

  345. and bitter thoughts

  346. and angry resentments,

  347. all our shame,

  348. all our secrets.

  349. And Jesus,

  350. the Holy One,

  351. understood better than any of us

  352. ever could

  353. what it meant

  354. to take the Father's wrath

  355. against all that.

  356. And yet still,

  357. that previous night,

  358. he renewed his commitment

  359. to come and suffer

  360. in the place of people

  361. like you and I.

  362. Of course,

  363. that commitment

  364. was older than just

  365. the previous evening.

  366. It was a commitment

  367. he'd renewed

  368. every day of his life

  369. from the cradle

  370. in Bethlehem

  371. to a dying breath

  372. on Calvary

  373. as he committed himself

  374. to go the Father's way.

  375. It was a commitment

  376. that was born

  377. in his very name,

  378. the name the angels

  379. had given him

  380. before he was born

  381. as a child.

  382. For his name is Jesus,

  383. that he will save his people

  384. from their sins.

  385. It was a commitment

  386. he renewed every day

  387. as he obeyed the law,

  388. not only in the obvious things,

  389. but never having a look

  390. of frustration,

  391. never a sigh of self-centeredness

  392. against God's will.

  393. It was written

  394. in the scriptures

  395. he fulfilled.

  396. It was written

  397. before the dawn of time.

  398. Peter says

  399. in 1 Peter chapter 1,

    1 Peter 1 chapter mention

  400. he was the lamb

  401. slain before the foundation

  402. of the world.

  403. It was written together

  404. in the mystery

  405. of the eternal covenant

  406. that we read about

  407. in Ephesians 1

  408. and in John 17,

  409. where the Father

  410. chose to redeem,

  411. the Son chose

  412. to come into the world

  413. and shed his blood

  414. to rescue us,

  415. and the Spirit

  416. chose to come

  417. and apply that

  418. to blind sinners

  419. like us.

  420. This is happening

  421. because the man

  422. Christ Jesus

  423. chose for it to happen

  424. in fulfillment

  425. to God's eternal purposes.

  426. So as we look

  427. at the horror

  428. and humiliation

  429. of this man

  430. on the cross,

  431. what must we grasp here?

  432. But we need to grasp,

  433. don't we,

  434. that there was

  435. no other way,

  436. there was no other way

  437. that we could be forgiven.

  438. There's no quick,

  439. easy route

  440. to say sorry.

  441. There's no get out

  442. of jail free card

  443. for God to just

  444. overlook our sin.

  445. It matters.

  446. It matters.

  447. There's no cheap price.

  448. No cut price deal.

  449. And as we look

  450. at Jesus'

  451. humiliation

  452. before people,

  453. we need to grasp,

  454. don't we,

  455. that what he suffered

  456. publicly that we see

  457. is,

  458. it's only the tip

  459. of the iceberg.

  460. You know what they say

  461. about icebergs,

  462. don't you?

  463. We only see

  464. sort of the 10%

  465. that is visible,

  466. the vast majority

  467. that is underneath.

  468. And so it is

  469. as we look

  470. at Jesus' suffering.

  471. We only see

  472. the tip of the iceberg.

  473. We don't get

  474. to grasp

  475. the full wrath

  476. that he bore for us.

  477. We hear it a little bit

  478. in his cry later on.

  479. My God,

  480. my God,

  481. why have you forsaken me?

  482. But we only get

  483. a glimpse of it.

  484. And moreover,

  485. the horror

  486. and humiliation

  487. he suffered

  488. before men

  489. that day

  490. is,

  491. my friends,

  492. what you and I

  493. deserve before God.

  494. And yet he bore

  495. it for us.

  496. what we see here

  497. is how serious

  498. our sin is.

  499. But also,

  500. don't we see

  501. something else?

  502. How incredible

  503. is God's love?

  504. How incredible

  505. is the love

  506. of Jesus

  507. that he should

  508. choose to do that

  509. for me

  510. or for you?

  511. How incredible

  512. is the love

  513. of the Father

  514. that he would

  515. give his only

  516. son

  517. that we

  518. could be his?

  519. That Jesus

  520. should be despised

  521. and rejected

  522. so that we

  523. could be loved

  524. and accepted?

  525. That he should

  526. be humiliated

  527. and cast down

  528. so that we

  529. can be lifted up?

  530. That he should

  531. be bloodied

  532. and bruised

  533. so that we

  534. should be safe

  535. forever?

  536. Can we get

  537. a glimpse

  538. of this love

  539. that he would

  540. willingly suffer

  541. for us?

  542. How can we

  543. ever doubt

  544. that God

  545. loves us?

  546. In those

  547. dark moments

  548. where you think

  549. God does not

  550. care,

  551. can you look

  552. back at Jesus

  553. on the cross

  554. and really

  555. ask that?

  556. As the hymn

  557. writer put it,

  558. upon the cross

  559. of Jesus

  560. mine eyes

  561. at times

  562. can see

  563. the very

  564. dying form

  565. of one

  566. who suffered

  567. there for me

  568. and from

  569. my smitten

  570. heart with

  571. tears

  572. two wonders

  573. I confess

  574. the wonders

  575. of his

  576. glorious love

  577. and my

  578. own

  579. worthlessness

  580. well that's

  581. what we see

  582. what do we

  583. hear?

  584. Listen,

  585. stop,

  586. look,

  587. listen,

  588. what do we

  589. hear as we

  590. listen?

  591. Verses 39

  592. to 44

  593. well what

  594. the English

  595. translation

  596. can't really

  597. capture here

  598. is we

  599. what we

  600. hear

  601. is continual

  602. mocking

  603. and temptation

  604. from all

  605. around

  606. it's continual

  607. in the original

  608. language it's

  609. clear it's

  610. harder in the

  611. English

  612. verse 39

  613. the passers-by

  614. kept on

  615. deriding him

  616. verses 41

  617. to 43

  618. the religious

  619. leaders keep

  620. on saying

  621. things

  622. that are

  623. mocking and

  624. tempting

  625. and accusing

  626. him

  627. verse 44

  628. the two

  629. robbers kept

  630. on reviling

  631. him

  632. it was

  633. consistent

  634. it didn't

  635. stop

  636. it was

  637. from all

  638. around

  639. not just

  640. the robbers

  641. on either

  642. side

  643. but from

  644. the highest

  645. in society

  646. the leaders

  647. the passers-by

  648. just doing

  649. their thing

  650. and the lowest

  651. of the low

  652. they crucified

  653. with him

  654. albeit Luke

  655. tells us

  656. one changed

  657. their tune

  658. later

  659. let's listen

  660. to what

  661. the mocking

  662. consists of

  663. the passers-by

  664. verses 39

  665. and 40

  666. they were

  667. wagging their

  668. heads

  669. a sign

  670. of

  671. disdain

  672. and contempt

  673. and they

  674. distort

  675. Jesus'

  676. words

  677. verse 40

  678. you who

  679. destroy

  680. the temple

  681. and rebuild

  682. it in three

  683. days

  684. save yourselves

  685. see there's

  686. something about

  687. Jesus

  688. there's something

  689. about what

  690. he said

  691. but they

  692. get it wrong

  693. what Jesus

  694. has actually

  695. said

  696. John 2

    John 2:19

  697. verse 19

  698. was you

  699. destroy this

  700. temple

  701. meaning his

  702. body

  703. and I will

  704. rebuild it

  705. in three

  706. days

  707. but they

  708. didn't really

  709. understand

  710. so instead

  711. they're mocking

  712. him

  713. saying

  714. you think

  715. you can

  716. destroy

  717. this

  718. beautiful

  719. temple

  720. Herod's

  721. built

  722. and then

  723. rebuild it

  724. in three

  725. days

  726. but it

  727. took him

  728. 40 years

  729. but here's

  730. the very

  731. first irony

  732. because the

  733. true temple

  734. the true

  735. meeting place

  736. of God

  737. with his

  738. people

  739. is not

  740. the real

  741. estate

  742. back in

  743. the city

  744. that's

  745. gone

  746. in 40

  747. years

  748. that will

  749. be

  750. rubble

  751. the real

  752. meeting

  753. place

  754. is in

  755. the flesh

  756. of Jesus

  757. Christ

  758. his body

  759. is the

  760. new

  761. temple

  762. and they

  763. spoke too

  764. soon

  765. didn't

  766. they

  767. if only

  768. they'd

  769. waited

  770. till

  771. Sunday

  772. afternoon

  773. they'd

  774. known

  775. he was

  776. alive

  777. the body

  778. had indeed

  779. been raised

  780. from the

  781. dead

  782. but it's

  783. not just

  784. the

  785. pastors

  786. by

  787. it's

  788. the

  789. religious

  790. elite

  791. as well

  792. and their

  793. continual

  794. mocking

  795. is

  796. laden

  797. with

  798. irony

  799. so verse

  800. 42

  801. he saved

  802. others

  803. he cannot

  804. save

  805. himself

  806. but that's

  807. the whole

  808. point

  809. he's choosing

  810. to save

  811. others

  812. by not

  813. saving

  814. himself

  815. he resisted

  816. the temptation

  817. to show

  818. his power

  819. then

  820. so his power

  821. can be seen

  822. for all

  823. eternity

  824. and the

  825. people

  826. like you

  827. and me

  828. he's brought

  829. to himself

  830. then they

  831. mock the

  832. idea of

  833. his kingship

  834. and power

  835. he is the

  836. king of

  837. Israel

  838. the king

  839. of God's

  840. covenant

  841. people

  842. let him

  843. come down

  844. now from

  845. the cross

  846. and we

  847. will believe

  848. in him

  849. if you're

  850. the king

  851. show us

  852. your power

  853. and yet

  854. it is because

  855. he is the

  856. king

  857. of God's

  858. people

  859. he stays

  860. up on

  861. the cross

  862. to win

  863. an eternal

  864. kingdom

  865. that you

  866. and I

  867. can be

  868. part

  869. of

  870. because

  871. he is

  872. God's

  873. king

  874. he stays

  875. on the

  876. cross

  877. until

  878. he is

  879. defeated

  880. sin

  881. and death

  882. and Satan

  883. for kingship

  884. belongs to

  885. the Lord

  886. and he

  887. rules over

  888. the nations

  889. Psalm 22

    Psalms 22:28

  890. verse 28

  891. again

  892. and then

  893. they mock

  894. the idea

  895. don't they

  896. in verse

  897. 43

  898. that God

  899. desires him

  900. he trusts

  901. in God

  902. let God

  903. deliver him

  904. if he

  905. desires him

  906. for he said

  907. I am the

  908. son of

  909. God

  910. that's

  911. an echo

  912. of Satan's

  913. temptation

  914. back in

  915. chapter 4

  916. verses 3

  917. and 6

  918. if you

  919. really are

  920. God's son

  921. then do a

  922. miracle

  923. show God

  924. loves you

  925. show God

  926. cares

  927. and if

  928. you're a

  929. Christian

  930. you will

  931. know that

  932. temptation

  933. won't you

  934. oh really

  935. you think

  936. God loves

  937. you

  938. and why

  939. did he let

  940. one of your

  941. loved ones

  942. die

  943. during this

  944. pandemic

  945. you think

  946. God loves

  947. you

  948. then why

  949. did that

  950. relationship

  951. not work

  952. out

  953. you think

  954. God loves

  955. you

  956. then why

  957. hasn't he

  958. answered that

  959. prayer you've

  960. been praying

  961. for years

  962. why are some

  963. of your

  964. children still

  965. walking away

  966. from the

  967. Lord

  968. you think

  969. God loves

  970. you

  971. then why

  972. is life

  973. so miserable

  974. and hard

  975. you think

  976. God loves

  977. you

  978. then why

  979. do you

  980. constantly

  981. deal with

  982. the anxiety

  983. and depression

  984. if God

  985. loves you

  986. why are you

  987. so lonely

  988. and if you

  989. know that

  990. temptation

  991. then do you

  992. see

  993. you see

  994. what Jesus

  995. is doing

  996. he is

  997. resisting

  998. it

  999. he is

  1000. overcoming

  1001. it

  1002. he is

  1003. continuing

  1004. to trust

  1005. his

  1006. father

  1007. and he's

  1008. waiting for

  1009. God the

  1010. father to

  1011. vindicate

  1012. him

  1013. and that

  1014. gives us

  1015. hope

  1016. when Satan

  1017. hurls those

  1018. fiery arrows

  1019. at us

  1020. and insinuates

  1021. that God

  1022. doesn't care

  1023. and we can

  1024. see God's

  1025. love

  1026. as we look

  1027. at Jesus

  1028. well then

  1029. there's the

  1030. robbers next

  1031. to him

  1032. verse 44

  1033. they keep

  1034. on mocking

  1035. him

  1036. and they

  1037. simply have

  1038. the same

  1039. taunts as

  1040. everyone else

  1041. don't they

  1042. just fall

  1043. into line

  1044. with what

  1045. everyone else

  1046. is saying

  1047. and so it

  1048. comes from

  1049. all sides

  1050. here is

  1051. poor Jesus

  1052. hanging on

  1053. his own

  1054. getting continually

  1055. mocked and

  1056. tempted from

  1057. all sides

  1058. and listen

  1059. carefully

  1060. do you hear

  1061. any encouraging

  1062. words

  1063. anyone on

  1064. his side

  1065. any cheerleaders

  1066. no

  1067. he's absolutely

  1068. isolated

  1069. all his disciples

  1070. have gone and

  1071. deserted him

  1072. he dies alone

  1073. to establish

  1074. his kingdom

  1075. and if we

  1076. believe in

  1077. Jesus as

  1078. king

  1079. if we live

  1080. for his

  1081. kingdom

  1082. not the

  1083. kingdom of

  1084. this world

  1085. then we

  1086. will face

  1087. that mocking

  1088. too

  1089. won't we

  1090. many of us

  1091. have already

  1092. experienced it

  1093. you'll be laughed

  1094. at for

  1095. believing in

  1096. God

  1097. like believing

  1098. in the tooth

  1099. fairy

  1100. you'll be

  1101. mocked

  1102. for believing

  1103. in ancient

  1104. fairy tales

  1105. you'll be

  1106. mocked

  1107. for thinking

  1108. that Jesus

  1109. is the

  1110. only way

  1111. to God

  1112. if you're

  1113. at school

  1114. perhaps you're

  1115. or even

  1116. if you're

  1117. not at

  1118. school

  1119. you'll be

  1120. mocked

  1121. and face

  1122. humiliation

  1123. believing

  1124. what Jesus

  1125. teaches

  1126. about

  1127. about ethics

  1128. especially

  1129. sexual ethics

  1130. and relationships

  1131. and identity

  1132. and male

  1133. and female

  1134. how narrow

  1135. minded

  1136. how oppressive

  1137. will face

  1138. the temptation

  1139. to cave

  1140. in

  1141. and yet

  1142. what kingdom

  1143. are we

  1144. living for

  1145. are we

  1146. living

  1147. for being

  1148. accepted

  1149. now

  1150. or for the

  1151. kingdom

  1152. to come

  1153. we need to

  1154. remember

  1155. Jesus earlier

  1156. promise

  1157. blessed are

  1158. those who

  1159. are persecuted

  1160. for righteousness

  1161. sake

  1162. for theirs

  1163. is the

  1164. kingdom

  1165. of heaven

  1166. blessed are

  1167. you when

  1168. others revile

  1169. you

  1170. and persecute

  1171. you

  1172. not are

  1173. all kinds

  1174. of evil

  1175. against you

  1176. falsely

  1177. on my

  1178. account

  1179. Jesus

  1180. was blessed

  1181. as he hung

  1182. there

  1183. faithful to

  1184. the father

  1185. and what

  1186. do we hear

  1187. from Jesus

  1188. as we listen

  1189. we hear

  1190. nothing

  1191. not a murmur

  1192. of complaint

  1193. not a sigh

  1194. of self

  1195. pity

  1196. not a quiet

  1197. word of

  1198. explanation

  1199. he suffers

  1200. in silence

  1201. so look

  1202. we see

  1203. the horror

  1204. and humiliation

  1205. that our

  1206. sin incurs

  1207. listen

  1208. we hear

  1209. the continual

  1210. mocking

  1211. and temptation

  1212. but finally

  1213. let's respond

  1214. where do we

  1215. see ourselves

  1216. in this picture

  1217. Matthew paints

  1218. it's easy

  1219. to be like

  1220. the passers

  1221. by

  1222. there were

  1223. religious people

  1224. going to

  1225. Jerusalem

  1226. around Jerusalem

  1227. for worship

  1228. at Passover

  1229. and it's

  1230. easy

  1231. in a sense

  1232. even if we

  1233. are Christians

  1234. to pass

  1235. by

  1236. here once

  1237. a year

  1238. we get

  1239. to Good

  1240. Friday

  1241. and we

  1242. think about

  1243. it there

  1244. J.C.

  1245. Ryle

  1246. writing

  1247. about 140

  1248. years ago

  1249. said let us

  1250. meditate

  1251. frequently on

  1252. these things

  1253. let us

  1254. often read

  1255. over the

  1256. story of

  1257. Christ's

  1258. passion

  1259. let us

  1260. not settle

  1261. for second

  1262. hand

  1263. knowledge

  1264. like those

  1265. passers

  1266. by

  1267. if we

  1268. don't

  1269. understand

  1270. what's

  1271. going on

  1272. then let's

  1273. pray

  1274. let's seek

  1275. let's

  1276. think

  1277. let's

  1278. ask

  1279. for help

  1280. let's

  1281. not be

  1282. overtaken

  1283. by urgent

  1284. matters

  1285. of the

  1286. day

  1287. that

  1288. outweigh

  1289. the

  1290. eternal

  1291. matters

  1292. of

  1293. judgment

  1294. before

  1295. the

  1296. throne

  1297. of

  1298. God

  1299. let us

  1300. not

  1301. pass

  1302. by

  1303. the

  1304. son

  1305. of

  1306. God

  1307. on

  1308. a

  1309. cross

  1310. let's

  1311. just

  1312. wallpaper

  1313. our

  1314. eyes

  1315. let us

  1316. ponder

  1317. until

  1318. we can

  1319. save

  1320. the

  1321. apostle

  1322. Paul

  1323. the

  1324. son

  1325. of

  1326. God

  1327. loved

  1328. me

  1329. and

  1330. gave

  1331. himself

  1332. for

  1333. me

  1334. maybe

  1335. we're

  1336. like

  1337. religious

  1338. leaders

  1339. unfortunately

  1340. like me

  1341. you've

  1342. grown up

  1343. in a

  1344. church

  1345. you may

  1346. think of

  1347. them as

  1348. pantomime

  1349. villains

  1350. we see

  1351. them

  1352. we want

  1353. to

  1354. boo

  1355. and hiss

  1356. because

  1357. they're

  1358. the

  1359. bad

  1360. guys

  1361. right

  1362. but

  1363. actually

  1364. they were

  1365. the people

  1366. who knew

  1367. their

  1368. Bibles

  1369. they were

  1370. the people

  1371. who in

  1372. one sense

  1373. were

  1374. zealous

  1375. to do

  1376. what

  1377. God

  1378. wanted

  1379. but not

  1380. according

  1381. to

  1382. knowledge

  1383. they were

  1384. people

  1385. with a

  1386. privileged

  1387. position

  1388. and yet

  1389. you didn't

  1390. really respond

  1391. to it

  1392. what

  1393. happened

  1394. why is it

  1395. they were

  1396. so arrogant

  1397. to Jesus

  1398. it's because

  1399. God blinded

  1400. them

  1401. God gave

  1402. them over

  1403. to their

  1404. pride

  1405. to their

  1406. self

  1407. righteousness

  1408. to their

  1409. hard

  1410. heartedness

  1411. and if

  1412. we're honest

  1413. if we come

  1414. from a

  1415. religious

  1416. background

  1417. like I

  1418. do

  1419. it's easy

  1420. to grow

  1421. up knowing

  1422. the answers

  1423. it's easy

  1424. to grow

  1425. up looking

  1426. good in

  1427. the eyes

  1428. of the

  1429. world

  1430. and thinking

  1431. we're

  1432. quite

  1433. fine

  1434. thank you

  1435. I

  1436. wouldn't

  1437. it be

  1438. an awful

  1439. thing

  1440. if God

  1441. left us

  1442. blind

  1443. in our

  1444. sin

  1445. it's

  1446. only by

  1447. the mercy

  1448. of God

  1449. that we

  1450. can see

  1451. this

  1452. so let's

  1453. pray

  1454. that the

  1455. doctrine

  1456. of the

  1457. atonement

  1458. will not

  1459. merely be

  1460. a fact

  1461. that we

  1462. assert

  1463. but a

  1464. heartwarming

  1465. truth that

  1466. informs our

  1467. lives

  1468. and the

  1469. way we

  1470. live day

  1471. by day

  1472. we might

  1473. not stand

  1474. at the

  1475. foot of

  1476. the cross

  1477. and mock

  1478. as they

  1479. did

  1480. but weep

  1481. over our

  1482. sin

  1483. and weep

  1484. over his

  1485. love

  1486. maybe we

  1487. can be like

  1488. the robbers

  1489. you just

  1490. join in

  1491. without

  1492. thinking

  1493. let's not

  1494. just join in

  1495. with the

  1496. taunts of

  1497. the world

  1498. maybe you've

  1499. done that

  1500. for some

  1501. time

  1502. not

  1503. taking

  1504. christianity

  1505. and the

  1506. cross

  1507. seriously

  1508. please don't

  1509. fall into

  1510. that trap

  1511. please

  1512. consider

  1513. what god

  1514. has done

  1515. for you

  1516. in christ

  1517. but if

  1518. you're a

  1519. baptized

  1520. christian

  1521. here today

  1522. i hope you

  1523. can see

  1524. yourself

  1525. somewhere

  1526. else in

  1527. this

  1528. story

  1529. because

  1530. the amazing

  1531. truth is

  1532. we are

  1533. baptized

  1534. into

  1535. christ's

  1536. death

  1537. do you

  1538. not know

  1539. says the

  1540. apostle paul

  1541. all of you

  1542. baptized into

  1543. christ jesus

  1544. were baptized

  1545. into his

  1546. death

  1547. as you look

  1548. at this

  1549. scene

  1550. where do

  1551. you see

  1552. yourself

  1553. baptized

  1554. christian

  1555. you can

  1556. see yourself

  1557. in christ

  1558. on the

  1559. cross

  1560. for he

  1561. has taken

  1562. your sin

  1563. he has

  1564. borne your

  1565. punishment

  1566. as he

  1567. hangs there

  1568. not only

  1569. that he

  1570. has taken

  1571. our very

  1572. sinful

  1573. nature

  1574. our old

  1575. selves

  1576. with all

  1577. our distorted

  1578. loves and

  1579. twisted desires

  1580. he has

  1581. nailed it to

  1582. the cross

  1583. so it is

  1584. dead

  1585. and now

  1586. we have

  1587. a new

  1588. life

  1589. by faith

  1590. in christ

  1591. in him

  1592. you are

  1593. justified

  1594. it's just

  1595. as if

  1596. you'd

  1597. never

  1598. sinned

  1599. it's just

  1600. as if

  1601. you'd

  1602. always

  1603. obeyed

  1604. it's just

  1605. as if

  1606. you'd

  1607. lived

  1608. jesus

  1609. life

  1610. your old

  1611. sinful

  1612. nature

  1613. hangs

  1614. there

  1615. dead

  1616. no longer

  1617. with power

  1618. over you

  1619. you have

  1620. a new

  1621. nature

  1622. to come

  1623. it comes

  1624. out the

  1625. tomb

  1626. on sunday

  1627. you are

  1628. dead to

  1629. the world

  1630. system

  1631. you're

  1632. dead to

  1633. belonging to

  1634. this age

  1635. needing to

  1636. prove yourself

  1637. to needing

  1638. to be popular

  1639. to needing

  1640. to be accepted

  1641. because you

  1642. are loved

  1643. by the king

  1644. of kings

  1645. and you're

  1646. a place

  1647. in an

  1648. eternal

  1649. kingdom

  1650. so why

  1651. worry about

  1652. riches or

  1653. honor or

  1654. success or

  1655. reputation or

  1656. promotion or

  1657. whether you've

  1658. got a house

  1659. or not

  1660. you have

  1661. an eternal

  1662. dwelling

  1663. place

  1664. and as

  1665. you hear

  1666. jesus

  1667. breathing his

  1668. last

  1669. victory

  1670. cry

  1671. that is

  1672. your victory

  1673. because jesus

  1674. has won it

  1675. for you

  1676. and satan

  1677. is defeated

  1678. life is

  1679. ours to

  1680. live

  1681. because he

  1682. has died

  1683. where do you

  1684. see yourself

  1685. as you look

  1686. at this scene

  1687. i hope we

  1688. see ourselves

  1689. united to

  1690. jesus

  1691. the one who

  1692. has died

  1693. for us

  1694. and he

  1695. will rise

  1696. again

  1697. because it's

  1698. friday

  1699. but sunday

  1700. is coming

  1701. i hope you

  1702. see yourself

  1703. loved and

  1704. cherished forever

  1705. because that

  1706. is what you

  1707. are

  1708. so how do

  1709. we respond

  1710. to what we

  1711. see and

  1712. hear

  1713. well it's

  1714. right to

  1715. weep with

  1716. sorrow for

  1717. our sin

  1718. by god's

  1719. grace may

  1720. we also

  1721. weep for

  1722. joy

  1723. and for

  1724. love that's

  1725. been shown

  1726. us

  1727. and may

  1728. we live

  1729. on in

  1730. confidence

  1731. knowing our

  1732. king will

  1733. come back

  1734. and that

  1735. life is

  1736. ours to

  1737. live

  1738. through him

  1739. let's pray

  1740. Amen.
