  1. And turn with me to Matthew chapter 5.

    Matthew 5 chapter mention

  2. And we began a series last week on the Beatitudes.

  3. ! I thought it would complement Romans and be different to Romans.

  4. ! And then I find I'm preaching pretty much exactly the same sermon this morning,

  5. this evening as I was this morning.

  6. So the Lord must be trying to tell you something.

  7. Let's pray.

  8. Guide us, O Lord, by your word and by your Holy Spirit,

  9. that in your light we may see light,

  10. that in your truth we might find freedom,

  11. and in your will that we might discover peace through Jesus Christ our Lord.

  12. Amen.

  13. And so I want us to look tonight at really what does it mean to come to the Lord Jesus Christ.

  14. And we're looking at that in Jesus' own words.

  15. Matthew 5 verse 3.

    Matthew 5:3

  16. Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

  17. Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

  18. Some of the culture is hostile to Christianity.

  19. Most of the culture couldn't care less, let's be honest.

  20. I don't know how you find that,

  21. but most of the people that I talk to about Christianity,

  22. they are apathetic.

  23. Indifferent.

  24. They couldn't care less.

  25. Why bother?

  26. For many people I know,

  27. God is simply just not relevant.

  28. And I think we have to face that.

  29. For many people today,

  30. in their mind,

  31. God simply is not relevant.

  32. They would say to us,

  33. I don't need God.

  34. If you need God,

  35. well that's alright for you,

  36. but I don't need God.

  37. I've got no felt need for him.

  38. I don't really feel the need of God.

  39. One of the things that Jesus has come to tell us,

  40. is whether you feel the need of God,

  41. or not,

  42. is irrelevant.

  43. The fact is,

  44. you have a need of God.

  45. Whether you feel the need of God,

  46. is irrelevant.

  47. The fact is,

  48. you have a need of God.

  49. You're on your way home tonight,

  50. there's a guy who's in the gutter,

  51. drunk.

  52. And he's in the drunk,

  53. he's got a black eye,

  54. he is bleeding.

  55. But he doesn't feel the need of your assistance,

  56. does he?

  57. And when you go with him,

  58. to check whether he's okay,

  59. well,

  60. what's the reaction you'll get?

  61. You'll get an elbow,

  62. or a punch maybe in the nose.

  63. He doesn't feel any need of your help,

  64. does he?

  65. The drunk and the gutter.

  66. But that's only an indication,

  67. isn't it,

  68. of how far gone he is,

  69. in his drunkenness.

  70. It's no indication of how things really are.

  71. It's only an indication of how much trouble

  72. that drunk is in.

  73. And the fact is,

  74. tonight,

  75. you might have come to church,

  76. and you sit in this building,

  77. and you say,

  78. well,

  79. I don't really feel any need of God.

  80. And that's only an indication,

  81. of how out of touch with reality,

  82. you really are.

  83. Jesus says,

  84. the fact is,

  85. that you have a need of God,

  86. and until you recognise that,

  87. you'll never be,

  88. truly happy in the way that,

  89. the Beatitudes talk about.

  90. Blessed are those who are poor in spirit,

  91. he says,

  92. for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

  93. Now what I want to do tonight,

  94. is I just want to clear up some misunderstandings,

  95. about what this verse is not about.

  96. And then I want to kind of,

  97. explain what it is about.

  98. Karl Marx called,

  99. Christianity,

  100. the opium of the people.

  101. Why?

  102. Because it offered people,

  103. it's a pie in the sky when you die,

  104. and that hope of the future heaven,

  105. well,

  106. it kept them content,

  107. in their present,

  108. and that of course,

  109. is a total misunderstanding,

  110. and misrepresentation,

  111. of what Christianity is.

  112. Jesus does not say here,

  113. Jesus does not say anywhere,

  114. blessed are the poor,

  115. full stop.

  116. What he says here,

  117. can you see it?

  118. Blessed are the poor in spirit.

  119. What does it mean,

  120. to be poor in spirit?

  121. It means to be impoverished,

  122. not in your circumstances,

  123. but in your relationship to God.

  124. John Paul Getty,

  125. he was one of the richest men,

  126. in the 20th century,

  127. and when he came to die,

  128. he said this,

  129. he's a very,

  130. very wealthy man,

  131. he said,

  132. I've never known love,

  133. I've never had a friend.

  134. So was John Paul Getty,

  135. a rich man?

  136. Do you think he was a rich man?

  137. A man who could say that,

  138. surely he was a very poor man,

  139. spiritually.

  140. John D. Rockefeller,

  141. said this,

  142. the poorest man I know,

  143. is the man who has nothing,

  144. but money.

  145. The poorest man I know,

  146. is the man who has nothing,

  147. but money.

  148. And there's a man like that,

  149. isn't there,

  150. that Marsha read for us,

  151. in Luke 12.

  152. And God calls him a fool.

  153. And why does God call that man,

  154. in Luke 12,

  155. a fool?

  156. It's not because he was rich.

  157. He's no fool,

  158. because he made money.

  159. God doesn't call him a fool,

  160. because he's rich.

  161. Why does God call that man,

  162. a fool?

  163. Jesus says,

  164. that man was a fool,

  165. because he was poor,

  166. towards God.

  167. And he was poor,

  168. towards the things,

  169. that really matter,

  170. in his relationship,

  171. with God,

  172. and in his relationship,

  173. with fellow human beings.

  174. He was bankrupt.

  175. Let me read to you,

  176. from Luke 12,

  177. he's a self-made man,

  178. in verse 16.

  179. At the land of a rich man,

  180. produced plentifully,

  181. he's arrived.

  182. This guy has made it,

  183. he's had a great year.

  184. But where is he,

  185. where has he arrived,

  186. and what he has made?

  187. And then verse 17,

  188. he thought to himself,

  189. what shall I do?

  190. What shall I do,

  191. for I have nowhere to store my crops?

  192. And he said to himself,

  193. I will do this.

  194. I will tear down my barns,

  195. and build larger ones,

  196. and there I will store all my grain,

  197. and my goods.

  198. And I will say to my soul,

  199. soul,

  200. you have ample goods,

  201. laid up for many years.

  202. Relax,

  203. eat,

  204. drink,

  205. and be merry.

  206. First sign of madness,

  207. is talking to yourself,

  208. they say,

  209. don't they?

  210. And it's quite interesting,

  211. that here,

  212. I think there is this contrast.

  213. We don't see it so clearly.

  214. I will say to my soul.

  215. Now there's times as a Christian,

  216. when it's good to talk to yourself.

  217. But I think,

  218. as we read this parable,

  219. we often miss the force,

  220. of what Jesus is saying.

  221. The Easterner,

  222. did his thinking in the crowd.

  223. Slightly different to the Westerner.

  224. The Easterner would normally,

  225. decide what to do,

  226. after hours of discussion,

  227. with his friends.

  228. But this man,

  229. we're told,

  230. he thinks within himself.

  231. He doesn't sit at the gate,

  232. he doesn't talk it over,

  233. with the elders of the village,

  234. according to normal practice.

  235. He dialogues with himself.

  236. Why?

  237. Because there is no one else.

  238. No one that he can talk things over with.

  239. No one but himself.

  240. No one that he can trust.

  241. No one that he can talk to.

  242. No one he can relate to.

  243. He's got nothing but money.

  244. That's the picture.

  245. It's all he's got.

  246. Plenty of money,

  247. but that's all he's got.

  248. He's a rich man,

  249. but in the things that matter,

  250. relationships with others,

  251. and relationships to God,

  252. he's bankrupt.

  253. And God says to him,

  254. you are a fool man.

  255. That's God's verdict

  256. on the world that we live in.

  257. That's God's verdict on materialism.

  258. Makes no difference

  259. whether you're a capitalist

  260. or a communist.

  261. The Bible says,

  262. if that's all you live for,

  263. you're a fool.

  264. The communist says,

  265. that matter is all that there is.

  266. And God says,

  267. don't be such a fool.

  268. And the capitalist says,

  269. matter is all that matters.

  270. And God says,

  271. a plague on both your houses.

  272. Don't be such a fool.

  273. A man's life does not consist

  274. in the things that he possesses.

  275. That's not the essence of life.

  276. What makes human beings

  277. happy and fulfilled?

  278. Man's life does not consist

  279. in the things that he possesses.

  280. There's something that matters

  281. more than matter.

  282. And that's your relationship

  283. to God.

  284. And unless you are

  285. rich towards God,

  286. unless you have a personal

  287. relationship with God,

  288. unless your relationship

  289. with God is good and right,

  290. whatever else you have,

  291. you're utterly bankrupt.

  292. Have you come to realise that?

  293. Have you come to understand that?

  294. And Jesus says,

  295. if you have,

  296. you are blessed.

  297. Congratulations,

  298. Jesus says.

  299. Blessed are the poor in spirit

  300. because they are the ones

  301. who realise that this life

  302. and all these things

  303. are not all that there is.

  304. Blessed are they

  305. who realise their poverty,

  306. not in the bank balance

  307. or in a state.

  308. But blessed are those

  309. who realise their poverty

  310. in the realm of the spirit.

  311. Jim Elliot,

  312. he resigned from the rat race

  313. in North America

  314. to become a missionary

  315. and it famously

  316. cost him his life.

  317. But shortly before he died,

  318. before he was killed,

  319. he wrote these words

  320. in his diary.

  321. He was quoting Matthew Henry.

  322. He is no fool

  323. who gives up

  324. what he cannot keep

  325. to gain what he cannot lose.

  326. He is no fool

  327. who gives up

  328. what he cannot keep

  329. to gain what he cannot lose.

  330. And that's what poverty

  331. of spirit is all about.

  332. It is to recognise

  333. where your true riches lie,

  334. like Jim Elliot did.

  335. He recognised that true wealth

  336. was to be found

  337. where true riches

  338. are to be found.

  339. And that's poverty of spirit.

  340. Jesus says,

  341. congratulations if you're there.

  342. So,

  343. to be poor in spirit

  344. is not

  345. to be,

  346. it's not blessed

  347. to be poor full stop.

  348. But to be poor in spirit,

  349. but to be poor in spirit

  350. is not to be spiritually poor.

  351. Let me explain that.

  352. To be poor in spirit

  353. is not to be spiritually poor.

  354. When Jesus says,

  355. blessed are the poor in spirit,

  356. he's not kind of pronouncing

  357. a benediction

  358. on spiritual poverty

  359. and bankruptcy.

  360. That's the state

  361. we're all in by nature.

  362. It's a wretched state

  363. to be in.

  364. It's not a happy state

  365. to be in.

  366. It's the reason

  367. for our unhappiness,

  368. our spiritual poverty.

  369. And Jesus says

  370. in Revelation

  371. that people,

  372. just like the folk

  373. who come to this church,

  374. people,

  375. kind of people

  376. who think they're

  377. themselves Christians,

  378. he says,

  379. do you know

  380. that you're wretched

  381. and poor

  382. and miserable

  383. and blind

  384. and naked?

  385. And all the time

  386. you think to yourself,

  387. well, we're rich,

  388. we're increased with goods,

  389. we've need of nothing.

  390. And so to be poor in spirit

  391. is to recognise

  392. the truth about yourself,

  393. to recognise

  394. that you are spiritually poor,

  395. not to be spiritually poor.

  396. There's no blessedness in that.

  397. That's a wretched state

  398. to be in.

  399. But Jesus says,

  400. congratulations if you realise

  401. that.

  402. Happy is the man

  403. who's come to see

  404. that his greatest need

  405. is to be rich towards God.

  406. Now when we use the word poor,

  407. we use it relatively.

  408. How many poor are there

  409. in this country?

  410. You know all the stats.

  411. We use it to describe

  412. people who are not

  413. very well off.

  414. There's a poverty scale,

  415. isn't there?

  416. But the word that Jesus

  417. uses here

  418. is for people

  419. who are totally destitute.

  420. It's a particular word

  421. that he uses for poverty.

  422. It describes those

  423. who have no property,

  424. no place,

  425. no job,

  426. no source of income,

  427. nothing to eat.

  428. They're up to their years

  429. in debt

  430. and so if they were

  431. given any money,

  432. it would immediately

  433. be lost to their creditors.

  434. According to Jesus,

  435. you and I are poor

  436. like that spiritually

  437. in our relationship

  438. with God.

  439. We're bankrupt.

  440. We cannot give God

  441. what he's got a right

  442. to expect from us.

  443. We are spiritually

  444. bankrupt

  445. and that is nothing

  446. to congratulate

  447. ourselves on.

  448. To be bankrupt,

  449. doesn't it,

  450. maybe some of you

  451. experienced it,

  452. it's a desperately

  453. unhappy situation

  454. to be in.

  455. The person who is

  456. bankrupt is

  457. desperately unhappy.

  458. They're under an

  459. obligation to pay

  460. and yet they're

  461. unable to do so.

  462. They're really caught.

  463. It's a terrible state.

  464. She ought to pay

  465. her debts

  466. but she cannot

  467. pay her debts.

  468. that's exactly

  469. where you and I

  470. are.

  471. Before God,

  472. that's what the

  473. Bible says.

  474. God has made us.

  475. We are his

  476. creatures.

  477. We are under

  478. certain obligations.

  479. We are under

  480. an obligation to

  481. love the Lord our

  482. God with all our

  483. heart and mind

  484. and soul and

  485. strength.

  486. we owe that to

  487. him.

  488. But none of us

  489. in honesty

  490. tonight can say

  491. that we've done

  492. that.

  493. None of us have

  494. lived that way.

  495. We're spiritually

  496. bankrupt.

  497. And yet we are

  498. accountable to God.

  499. That comes out so

  500. clearly, doesn't it,

  501. in Luke 12.

  502. Do you remember

  503. what God said to

  504. that rich fool?

  505. He said,

  506. tonight your soul

  507. will be required

  508. of you.

  509. And that word

  510. is a technical

  511. word.

  512. It's the returning

  513. of a loan.

  514. Tonight your life

  515. will be required

  516. of you.

  517. The man's so busy

  518. with his accounts,

  519. that's the picture,

  520. he's so busy with

  521. his accounts that

  522. he'd forgotten he

  523. was accountable

  524. himself.

  525. Accountable to the

  526. God who had

  527. given him the

  528. life that he had

  529. lived.

  530. And so tonight

  531. are you aware

  532. that you are

  533. accountable to

  534. God for the

  535. life that you've

  536. lived.

  537. That your life

  538. will be required

  539. of you.

  540. And so what

  541. does Jesus mean?

  542. What does he mean

  543. when he says

  544. blessed are the

  545. poor in spirit?

  546. He doesn't mean

  547. blessed are the

  548. poor full stop.

  549. He doesn't mean

  550. blessed are the

  551. spiritually poor,

  552. for that's a

  553. wretched state to

  554. be in.

  555. What does he mean

  556. when he says

  557. blessed are the

  558. poor in spirit?

  559. I think I've

  560. told you the

  561. story before

  562. is that the

  563. actress,

  564. she's an

  565. aging actress

  566. and she goes

  567. to the west

  568. end for a

  569. head shot,

  570. you know,

  571. to get her

  572. photograph done.

  573. And she says

  574. to the young

  575. photographer,

  576. she says,

  577. young man,

  578. I hope you're

  579. going to do

  580. me justice.

  581. And the

  582. photographer

  583. looks at her

  584. and says,

  585. it's not

  586. justice that you

  587. need,

  588. madam,

  589. it's mercy.

  590. It's mercy.

  591. And that's

  592. what you and

  593. I require

  594. from God.

  595. It's what you

  596. and I stand

  597. in need of

  598. before God,

  599. not justice.

  600. If you think

  601. that you're

  602. going to be

  603. able to pull

  604. yourself up to

  605. your full height

  606. on the day

  607. of judgment

  608. and say,

  609. God,

  610. well,

  611. here I am,

  612. you must be

  613. delighted to have

  614. someone like me

  615. in your kingdom.

  616. The Pharisee

  617. in the parable

  618. in Luke 18

  619. went into the

  620. temple and he

  621. said,

  622. well,

  623. I thank you

  624. that I'm

  625. not like

  626. other men.

  627. I do this

  628. and I do

  629. that and I

  630. don't do

  631. this and I

  632. don't do

  633. that.

  634. I go to

  635. church,

  636. I give to

  637. charity,

  638. I do

  639. loads of

  640. good,

  641. I'm a

  642. really decent

  643. man,

  644. I'm an

  645. upright

  646. member of

  647. society.

  648. And you

  649. want to be

  650. pretty pleased

  651. to have

  652. me in your

  653. kingdom,

  654. God,

  655. and Jesus

  656. says,

  657. that is not

  658. the man

  659. who went

  660. home that

  661. night right

  662. with God.

  663. No,

  664. he says it

  665. was the

  666. other man,

  667. which man?

  668. Well,

  669. it's the guy

  670. at the back

  671. of the

  672. temple who

  673. couldn't lift

  674. up his

  675. eyes and

  676. look God

  677. in the

  678. face,

  679. the man

  680. who was

  681. so conscious

  682. of his

  683. poverty and

  684. of his

  685. bankruptcy

  686. that all

  687. he could

  688. do was

  689. beat on

  690. his breast

  691. and cry

  692. out to

  693. God,

  694. be merciful

  695. to me,

  696. be merciful

  697. to me,

  698. I'm a

  699. sinner.

  700. And Jesus

  701. says it

  702. was that

  703. man who

  704. went home

  705. right with

  706. God,

  707. that is

  708. the man.

  709. And in

  710. the next

  711. breath,

  712. Jesus says

  713. everyone who

  714. exalts

  715. himself,

  716. everyone who

  717. puffs himself

  718. up will be

  719. humbled,

  720. and everyone

  721. who humbles

  722. himself will

  723. be lifted

  724. up.

  725. Everyone who

  726. humbles

  727. himself,

  728. everyone who

  729. recognises

  730. they've got

  731. nothing to

  732. offer to

  733. God,

  734. nothing to

  735. commend

  736. themselves to

  737. God,

  738. that is the

  739. person who

  740. will be

  741. exalted in

  742. the kingdom.

  743. And that's

  744. what it means

  745. to be poor

  746. in spirit.

  747. The hymn

  748. writer says,

  749. isn't it,

  750. just as I

  751. am,

  752. poor,

  753. wretched,

  754. blind,

  755. sight,

  756. riches,

  757. healing of

  758. the mind,

  759. yea,

  760. all I need,

  761. in thee I

  762. find,

  763. O Lamb of

  764. God,

  765. I come,

  766. I come.

  767. Is that how

  768. you've come to

  769. the Lord Jesus

  770. Christ?

  771. If you

  772. haven't come

  773. in that

  774. way,

  775. you haven't

  776. come at

  777. all,

  778. conscious of

  779. your needs,

  780. not for

  781. justice,

  782. but for

  783. mercy.

  784. And that's

  785. the first

  786. step to

  787. putting you,

  788. putting right

  789. your broken

  790. relationship with

  791. God.

  792. It's difficult,

  793. isn't it?

  794. It's so

  795. humbling.

  796. there's

  797. nothing that

  798. you can do

  799. to put it

  800. right.

  801. It's

  802. humbling to

  803. admit that

  804. you've got

  805. nothing to

  806. offer God

  807. except the

  808. sin for

  809. which you

  810. desperately

  811. need is

  812. forgiveness.

  813. And that

  814. is poverty

  815. of spirit,

  816. and Jesus

  817. says that

  818. is blessed.

  819. why is it

  820. blessed?

  821. Why is that

  822. attitude of

  823. mine blessed?

  824. Well,

  825. because it

  826. drives us to

  827. Christ,

  828. doesn't it?

  829. the man

  830. who's seen

  831. and the

  832. woman who's

  833. seen their

  834. absolute

  835. spiritual

  836. bankruptcy,

  837. that person

  838. who understands

  839. Romans 3,

  840. who realises

  841. that what he

  842. needs is

  843. mercy alone,

  844. and realises

  845. that there's

  846. nowhere else

  847. to go

  848. except to

  849. Christ.

  850. Thomas

  851. Watson,

  852. the

  853. puriter,

  854. wrote this,

  855. he that is

  856. poor in

  857. spirit,

  858. is a

  859. Christ

  860. admirer.

  861. He has

  862. high thoughts

  863. of Christ.

  864. He sets a

  865. high value

  866. and appreciation

  867. on Christ.

  868. He hides

  869. himself in

  870. Christ's

  871. wounds.

  872. He bathes

  873. himself in

  874. his blood.

  875. He wraps

  876. himself in

  877. his robe.

  878. He sees a

  879. spiritual dearth

  880. and famine

  881. at home,

  882. but he looks

  883. out to

  884. Christ,

  885. and he

  886. cries,

  887. show me

  888. thyself,

  889. and this

  890. sufficeth.

  891. There's one

  892. word that

  893. sums it up,

  894. isn't it?

  895. All that

  896. Jesus is

  897. saying here,

  898. and it

  899. is the

  900. word

  901. grace.

  902. Do you

  903. remember,

  904. children,

  905. the hand

  906. of grace?

  907. God's

  908. riches

  909. at

  910. Christ's

  911. expense.

  912. That's

  913. how Paul

  914. defines

  915. grace,

  916. isn't it?

  917. 2 Corinthians

  918. 8 and

  919. verse 9,

  920. for you

  921. know the

  922. grace of

  923. our

  924. Lord Jesus

  925. Christ,

  926. that though

  927. he was

  928. rich,

  929. yet for

  930. your sake

  931. he became

  932. poor,

  933. so that

  934. you,

  935. by his

  936. poverty,

  937. might become

  938. rich.

  939. how do

  940. you know

  941. the grace

  942. of our

  943. Lord Jesus

  944. Christ?

  945. Where do

  946. you see

  947. it?

  948. What does

  949. it look

  950. like?

  951. What is

  952. this

  953. grace?

  954. You know

  955. the grace

  956. of our

  957. Lord Jesus

  958. Christ,

  959. that though

  960. he was

  961. rich,

  962. yet for

  963. your sake,

  964. for your

  965. sake,

  966. he became

  967. poor,

  968. so that

  969. through his

  970. poverty,

  971. you might

  972. become rich.

  973. That is

  974. grace.

  975. He was

  976. rich,

  977. wasn't he?

  978. he was

  979. adored by

  980. the angels

  981. of heaven,

  982. he was

  983. the king

  984. of the

  985. angels.

  986. He enjoyed

  987. an unbroken

  988. relationship

  989. with his

  990. father in

  991. heaven,

  992. unbroken

  993. fellowship,

  994. and communion

  995. in the

  996. Godhead,

  997. he was

  998. rich in

  999. the truest

  1000. sense of

  1001. the word.

  1002. And what

  1003. did he do?

  1004. He came

  1005. here,

  1006. he left

  1007. it all,

  1008. he left

  1009. his father's

  1010. presence.

  1011. The king

  1012. of the

  1013. angels

  1014. got off

  1015. his throne

  1016. and became

  1017. a little

  1018. lower than

  1019. the angels.

  1020. He

  1021. impoverished

  1022. himself.

  1023. He did

  1024. not consider

  1025. equality with

  1026. God something

  1027. to be grasped,

  1028. but made

  1029. himself

  1030. nothing.

  1031. To in the

  1032. very nature

  1033. of a servant

  1034. that through

  1035. his poverty,

  1036. you and I

  1037. might go to

  1038. where he

  1039. was.

  1040. That you

  1041. and I

  1042. might have

  1043. God's

  1044. riches at

  1045. Christ's

  1046. expense.

  1047. You see,

  1048. what does a

  1049. bankrupt man

  1050. need?

  1051. A

  1052. bankrupt man

  1053. needs a

  1054. benefactor.

  1055. He's

  1056. somebody who

  1057. is rich,

  1058. somebody who

  1059. is prepared

  1060. to come

  1061. with his

  1062. riches and

  1063. step in and

  1064. assume the

  1065. liabilities.

  1066. That's what

  1067. God's

  1068. son has

  1069. done.

  1070. He was

  1071. rich and

  1072. he came,

  1073. why did

  1074. he come,

  1075. why did

  1076. he step

  1077. into this

  1078. world?

  1079. He came

  1080. in order

  1081. to assume

  1082. your

  1083. liabilities

  1084. and mine,

  1085. to live

  1086. that life

  1087. that you

  1088. and I

  1089. should have

  1090. lived,

  1091. that we

  1092. haven't.

  1093. To die

  1094. that death

  1095. that you

  1096. and I

  1097. deserve,

  1098. to die

  1099. is the

  1100. punishment

  1101. for our

  1102. sin,

  1103. that death

  1104. with hell

  1105. mixed into

  1106. it.

  1107. He died

  1108. that death

  1109. upon the

  1110. cross,

  1111. that is

  1112. how poor

  1113. he became.

  1114. He

  1115. emptied

  1116. himself.

  1117. He

  1118. lost

  1119. what he'd

  1120. always

  1121. known.

  1122. He cries

  1123. on the

  1124. cross,

  1125. my God,

  1126. my God,

  1127. why have

  1128. you forsaken

  1129. me,

  1130. the cry

  1131. of dereliction?

  1132. We can't

  1133. fully understand

  1134. it.

  1135. God's

  1136. love.

  1137. And through

  1138. that you

  1139. and I

  1140. are brought

  1141. to God.

  1142. The

  1143. wonderful

  1144. thing about

  1145. the gospel

  1146. is it's

  1147. not just

  1148. negative,

  1149. but it's

  1150. a positive

  1151. thing.

  1152. It isn't

  1153. just that

  1154. our debts

  1155. and our

  1156. sins have

  1157. been liquidated,

  1158. that's part

  1159. of it.

  1160. The gospel

  1161. isn't just

  1162. great news

  1163. because the

  1164. slate has

  1165. been wiped

  1166. clean,

  1167. that's

  1168. great,

  1169. but it's

  1170. not all,

  1171. is it?

  1172. We've

  1173. been made

  1174. rich.

  1175. And so

  1176. the gospel

  1177. isn't back

  1178. to square

  1179. one again

  1180. and off

  1181. you go.

  1182. But we've

  1183. been made

  1184. rich through

  1185. his poverty.

  1186. And so

  1187. Jesus says

  1188. blessed are

  1189. the poor

  1190. in spirit

  1191. for theirs

  1192. is a

  1193. fresh brand

  1194. new start.

  1195. No,

  1196. he doesn't

  1197. say that.

  1198. Blessed are

  1199. the poor

  1200. in spirit

  1201. for the

  1202. slate is

  1203. wiped

  1204. clean,

  1205. the debts

  1206. are cancelled,

  1207. they can

  1208. start over

  1209. again,

  1210. that's not

  1211. what he

  1212. says,

  1213. is it?

  1214. Look at what

  1215. he says,

  1216. he says,

  1217. blessed are

  1218. the poor

  1219. in spirit

  1220. for theirs

  1221. is the

  1222. kingdom

  1223. of heaven.

  1224. And not

  1225. only are

  1226. their debts

  1227. paid,

  1228. but they

  1229. are rich.

  1230. You are

  1231. rich tonight

  1232. in Christ.

  1233. Theirs is

  1234. the kingdom

  1235. of heaven.

  1236. What is

  1237. the kingdom

  1238. of heaven?

  1239. Do you know

  1240. what Paul says

  1241. in Romans,

  1242. he says,

  1243. the kingdom

  1244. of heaven

  1245. is not

  1246. meat and

  1247. drink.

  1248. It's

  1249. righteousness

  1250. and peace

  1251. and joy

  1252. in the

  1253. Holy Spirit.

  1254. That's

  1255. the kingdom

  1256. of heaven.

  1257. And that's

  1258. what distinguishes

  1259. the kingdom

  1260. of heaven

  1261. from all

  1262. other

  1263. kingdoms.

  1264. Look at

  1265. who's

  1266. growing up

  1267. there.

  1268. Lots of

  1269. people,

  1270. they would

  1271. never go

  1272. abroad.

  1273. They would

  1274. never go

  1275. abroad

  1276. because the

  1277. reason they

  1278. wouldn't go

  1279. abroad is

  1280. they wouldn't

  1281. like the

  1282. food.

  1283. They're

  1284. afraid of

  1285. eating the

  1286. food.

  1287. Foreign

  1288. food

  1289. doesn't

  1290. agree with

  1291. me,

  1292. they'd

  1293. say.

  1294. He doesn't

  1295. agree with

  1296. me.

  1297. Jesus says

  1298. the kingdom

  1299. of heaven,

  1300. you don't

  1301. have to

  1302. worry about

  1303. the food.

  1304. The kingdom

  1305. of heaven

  1306. has got

  1307. nothing to

  1308. do with

  1309. food.

  1310. It's nothing

  1311. to do with

  1312. those external

  1313. things.

  1314. To be in the

  1315. kingdom of

  1316. heaven,

  1317. it doesn't

  1318. matter if you

  1319. eat pork

  1320. or not,

  1321. people ask me

  1322. that.

  1323. To be in the

  1324. kingdom of

  1325. heaven is a

  1326. matter of

  1327. righteousness and

  1328. joy and

  1329. peace.

  1330. It is to be

  1331. really rich.

  1332. It is to be

  1333. rich with those

  1334. things in your

  1335. heart that you

  1336. really need.

  1337. to be in

  1338. the kingdom

  1339. of heaven.

  1340. How do you

  1341. get into the

  1342. kingdom of

  1343. heaven when

  1344. it's all a

  1345. matter of

  1346. grace?

  1347. Jesus says

  1348. this.

  1349. Jesus says

  1350. to you

  1351. tonight,

  1352. fear not

  1353. little flock,

  1354. it's your

  1355. father's good

  1356. pleasure to

  1357. give you the

  1358. kingdom.

  1359. That's an

  1360. amazing statement

  1361. isn't it?

  1362. What are you?

  1363. A little

  1364. flock of

  1365. silly wandering

  1366. sheep.

  1367. That is all

  1368. we are.

  1369. We are not

  1370. tonight a

  1371. great important

  1372. group of

  1373. people that

  1374. God can't

  1375. do without.

  1376. And he

  1377. really must

  1378. have you in

  1379. his kingdom.

  1380. No.

  1381. We are a

  1382. silly flock of

  1383. sheep, that's

  1384. all.

  1388. We're like

  1389. sheep we've

  1390. wandered off,
