  1. Good morning, IPC. Let us pray.

  2. Lord, you are the living God. Speak to us today.

  3. ! Let us hear what only you have to say.

  4. ! In Jesus' name, Amen.

  5. Jesus says,

  6. If you love me, you will keep my commandments.

  7. Love and obey.

  8. These are a pair of words that we often associate with what we ought to do.

  9. We ought to love one another.

  10. We ought to love God.

  11. And we ought to obey.

  12. We ought to obey or keep God's commandments.

  13. We ought to obey authorities and parents and so on.

  14. But there is no commandment in this passage,

  15. in the passage that we read in John 14.

  16. There are no commandments.

  17. Jesus is describing the disciples' action.

  18. This is what he tells them.

  19. He says,

  20. The disciples are going to know the Spirit and live with him.

  21. The disciples will see Christ even though the world does not.

  22. They will live because Christ lives.

  23. They will comprehend the unity of God and his people.

  24. But there are no commandments.

  25. And I think the focus of this passage is on love more than on commandments.

  26. It's on our love for God and God's love for us.

  27. If you love me, that's the possibility.

  28. So what exactly then is required of a Christian when Christ says this?

  29. If you love me.

  30. Christian morality is really comprised of two parts.

  31. Think of it as a floor and a ceiling.

  32. On the floor of Christian morality, on the sort of foundational level,

  33. we have things like a lot of the Ten Commandments,

  34. which we read in here often.

  35. Don't steal.

  36. Don't murder.

  37. Don't commit adultery.

  38. And so on.

  39. Yes, we will break these commandments sometimes in some ways.

  40. But these are a foundational level of what we ought to do as Christians.

  41. But these also have a ceiling.

  42. What do I mean by a ceiling?

  43. Well, don't commit adultery.

  44. That's the floor.

  45. Love your wife as Christ loved the church.

  46. That's the ceiling.

  47. Don't murder.

  48. That's the floor.

  49. But as we know, Jesus says,

  50. I tell you that anyone who is angry with a brother or sister will be judged.

  51. Do not steal.

  52. Versus, blessed is he who is generous to the poor.

  53. The rich young ruler comes to Jesus.

  54. And what does he say?

  55. What must I do?

  56. To obtain eternal life.

  57. Jesus says, well, you need to keep the commandments.

  58. And he says, I've kept all the commandments from my youth.

  59. There's one thing I require.

  60. Give up all you have and follow me.

  61. That is a ceiling.

  62. And the same is true for loving God.

  63. We must love God with all our heart, all our mind, and all of our strength.

  64. As he who called you is holy, says Peter, you also be holy in all of your conduct.

  65. Since it is written, you shall be holy for I am holy.

  66. In short, be as holy as God.

  67. Love him with everything you are.

  68. That's not minimal Christian morality.

  69. Do you remember what happens at the end of Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory?

  70. Gene Wilder is sitting there with that usual kind of crazed look in his eye.

  71. And he's sitting across from the boy, Charlie Bucket.

  72. And they're in a sort of rocket ship or elevator sort of capsule thing.

  73. And then it starts to go up and up and up and up until it eventually breaks through the glass ceiling.

  74. And they somehow fly around looking at the town.

  75. That's a wonderful picture of what we don't do as Christians.

  76. We don't blast through the ceiling of God's demands.

  77. Does anyone for more than maybe ten minutes have an intense affection for the Lord?

  78. Is anyone ready to give up everything and follow him?

  79. Ready to put your life on the line for Christ?

  80. Maybe you are ready.

  81. But most of us, most of the time, need to increase our love for God.

  82. We need more affection for Christ.

  83. We need courage to give up our own interests for the sake of his name.

  84. This takes us back to Willy Wonka one more time.

  85. We're a little more like the fizzy lifting drink.

  86. Right?

  87. Charlie Bucket and his grandpa drink the fizzy lifting drink.

  88. And they start to float up to the top of the tunnel.

  89. And they start to burp the fizzy drink.

  90. And they start to slowly float back down.

  91. Until finally they come to rest on the floor.

  92. Popping up once in a while, mainly floating down to the ground.

  93. We're just kind of content on the floor.

  94. But we do love Christ.

  95. That's not what I'm saying.

  96. We do love Christ.

  97. And it's possible, maybe in some way, that the rich young ruler did keep the commandments from his youth.

  98. And it is true.

  99. Christians love Jesus.

  100. You are not indifferent about Christ.

  101. But Jesus wants more of our love.

  102. He wants us to increase our love for him.

  103. He wants us to love him with all of our heart and mind and strength.

  104. We're in John 14.

  105. If your Bibles aren't open, go ahead and find John 14.

  106. This occurs in what's called the Upper Room Discourse.

  107. It's John chapters 13 to 17.

    John 13 chapter mention

  108. The Upper Room Discourse or the Farewell Discourse.

  109. Now before this, Jesus has been going along on his ministry.

  110. And that portion concludes with him arriving into Jerusalem.

  111. And then he meets with his disciples.

  112. And they have this final lengthy meeting together.

  113. And then after this section in chapter 18, it's basically Jesus' passion.

  114. His death and then his resurrection and reappearance to his followers.

  115. Our section, not chapter 14, but chapter 13, our section begins like this.

  116. Now before the feast of the Passover, when Jesus knew that his hour had come to depart out of this world to the Father,

  117. having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end.

  118. What is about to occur is in itself an expression of Christ's love.

  119. An expression of Christ's love for his disciples.

  120. And you know this story.

  121. He cleanses them physically.

  122. This is when he washes their feet.

  123. But he also cleanses them symbolically.

  124. After he washes their feet, they're sitting around the table.

  125. And for some light dinner table conversation, he says, one of you will betray me.

  126. And Judas is exposed and Judas departs.

  127. The disciples are cleansed in this symbolic way.

  128. And then comes the news from Jesus himself.

  129. I too must depart.

  130. I am leaving and where I am going, you cannot come, he says.

  131. What do these men need now?

  132. Reassurance?

  133. Comfort?

  134. Comfort?

  135. Instruction about how this is all going to work without Jesus?

  136. Jesus goes on to tell them,

  137. Believe in me.

  138. Remember that my words are authoritative.

  139. Ask anything in my name and it will be given.

  140. This is chapter 14.

    Isaiah 14 chapter mention

  141. And then, in verse 15,

  142. If you love me, you will keep my commandments.

  143. This is us.

  144. It sounds like obedience will just happen.

  145. If you love me, you will keep my commandments.

  146. Obedience will just happen so long as we love God.

  147. And I think we actually understand this connection pretty well.

  148. And the connection is this.

  149. Love has great implications for how we behave.

  150. Love has great implications for how we behave.

  151. Take a mundane example.

  152. If you love a sports team,

  153. West Ham United, for example,

  154. what do you do?

  155. I know very little about football,

  156. so I love just picking a random team.

  157. I know for some of you,

  158. we'll make or break this.

  159. But West Ham United, for example,

  160. if you love them,

  161. what will you do?

  162. Well, you might say,

  163. I love West Ham,

  164. but I never watch a match.

  165. I never talk about them.

  166. I'm not getting a jersey,

  167. nothing with a logo.

  168. I don't read up on the latest news about the players.

  169. No.

  170. No, you don't do that.

  171. If you love West Ham,

  172. you make sure that match night is free.

  173. You talk about the team the next morning at work.

  174. You might wear something with the logo,

  175. and you surely read the news about them.

  176. If you love West Ham,

  177. you will do these things.

  178. Now, I often hear people say

  179. that we use the word love casually.

  180. Right?

  181. I love pizza.

  182. I love my children.

  183. I love God.

  184. How can we use the same word

  185. for all of those things?

  186. There's a difference here,

  187. which I'll talk about,

  188. but there's also an important commonality.

  189. Love has great implications

  190. for how we behave.

  191. Love has great implications

  192. for how we behave.

  193. It's a natural connection, actually,

  194. to love and to obey.

  195. What is supernatural

  196. is to love God.

  197. The question is,

  198. how do we love him?

  199. How do we love him?

  200. And that's what our passage is about.

  201. It's about love,

  202. and it tells us three things about it.

  203. How we love God,

  204. when we love God,

  205. and the implications of this love.

  206. How we love God,

  207. when we love God,

  208. and the implications of this love.

  209. First, how do we love God?

  210. We love God

  211. by the power of the Holy Spirit,

  212. given by the Father,

  213. thanks to the Son.

  214. Look at verse 15.

  215. If you love me,

  216. you will keep my commandments,

  217. and I will ask the Father,

  218. and he will give you another helper

  219. to be with you forever.

  220. The word here for helper

  221. probably means something

  222. just like that,

  223. someone who helps,

  224. a comforter,

  225. someone who comes alongside

  226. and supports.

  227. In general,

  228. it's an associate.

  229. Now,

  230. it can mean something

  231. very particular.

  232. It can mean a sort of

  233. judicial advocate,

  234. in that kind of sense,

  235. and maybe there's an interesting

  236. illusion there,

  237. that the Spirit would advocate

  238. on our behalf,

  239. as in a court setting.

  240. But more immediately,

  241. the Spirit helps

  242. with something else.

  243. What does the Spirit

  244. help with?

  245. We're on verse 17 now.

  246. Jesus calls this helper

  247. the Spirit of Truth,

  248. whom the world cannot receive

  249. because it neither sees him

  250. nor knows him.

  251. You know him,

  252. for he dwells with you

  253. and will be in you.

  254. All of this talk about

  255. believing in Jesus,

  256. about being reassured

  257. when he departs,

  258. about having an incredible

  259. connection with God.

  260. Jesus says,

  261. I will be in my Father,

  262. you will be in me.

  263. We will be one.

  264. All this talk about

  265. asking for things

  266. in Jesus' name

  267. and receiving them,

  268. all of this is thanks

  269. to the Spirit of Truth.

  270. That is how we love God,

  271. by the power of the Spirit

  272. given by the Father,

  273. thanks to the Son.

  274. The New Testament says

  275. that everything about you

  276. as a Christian

  277. is new.

  278. You have a new heart

  279. to feel.

  280. You have new eyes

  281. to see.

  282. New minds

  283. to think.

  284. In 1 Corinthians,

  285. Paul says,

  286. we have the mind

  287. of Christ.

  288. This is new life.

  289. And this makes

  290. the church the church.

  291. The world does not

  292. call God Father

  293. or pray in Christ's name

  294. or read the Bible

  295. expecting to see

  296. God himself

  297. or know that this book

  298. is the way that God

  299. has spoken to me

  300. and to us.

  301. That's the Spirit's gift

  302. of what we call

  303. illumination.

  304. That's how we know

  305. the Bible is God's word.

  306. It's a supernatural word

  307. and a supernatural act

  308. to recognize it.

  309. for the same reason

  310. the world does not

  311. love God

  312. because they have not

  313. received His Spirit.

  314. However,

  315. if anyone is going

  316. to love God

  317. and anyone can

  318. say that again,

  319. if anyone is going

  320. to love God

  321. and anyone

  322. can

  323. love God,

  324. then it's going

  325. to be for the same

  326. reason.

  327. if you love God,

  328. you have been given

  329. the help

  330. of the Holy Spirit.

  331. God has regenerated

  332. your heart

  333. and given you

  334. new life.

  335. How's that

  336. for help?

  337. How do we love God?

  338. By the power

  339. of the Spirit

  340. given by the Father

  341. thanks to the Son.

  342. When will we love God?

  343. This is the second question.

  344. When will we love God?

  345. It's a bit of a strange

  346. question.

  347. It may sound strange,

  348. but Jesus does make

  349. a point of it.

  350. We will love God

  351. and particularly

  352. increase our love

  353. for God

  354. when we see

  355. the resurrected

  356. Christ.

  357. Verse 19,

  358. Yet a little while

  359. and the world

  360. will see me

  361. no more,

  362. but you will see me.

  363. Because I live,

  364. you also will live.

  365. In that day,

  366. you will know

  367. that I am in my Father

  368. and you in me

  369. and I in you.

  370. In these lines,

  371. I think Jesus is referring

  372. about his resurrection

  373. appearance.

  374. I think he's referring

  375. to his resurrection

  376. appearance.

  377. In that day,

  378. I think that's

  379. the particular day

  380. for the disciples

  381. that they're expecting

  382. when they will know

  383. that he is in my Father.

  384. The general point

  385. is that we love God

  386. when we see Christ,

  387. especially the Christ

  388. of glory.

  389. That's the general point.

  390. When we see the Christ

  391. of glory,

  392. we will love God

  393. and love him more.

  394. It had a more

  395. immediate meaning

  396. for the disciples,

  397. of course.

  398. Jesus was physically

  399. going to go away.

  400. You will not see me.

  401. You'll open your eyes.

  402. I will not be around.

  403. You'll come into my room.

  404. I will not be there.

  405. But then you will see me.

  406. But for them

  407. and for us,

  408. a single principle holds.

  409. And that single principle

  410. is it is Christ first.

  411. It is Christ first.

  412. In the same way

  413. that we love God

  414. when we have the Holy Spirit,

  415. so looking upon Christ

  416. increases that love

  417. for him.

  418. I hope you're starting

  419. to see that

  420. everything about

  421. if you love me,

  422. you will keep my commandments

  423. begins with God.

  424. It begins with his love

  425. for himself

  426. within the persons

  427. of the Trinity

  428. and it begins

  429. with his love

  430. for us.

  431. We love God

  432. by the power

  433. of the Holy Spirit.

  434. We will love God

  435. when we see

  436. the glorified Christ.

  437. We will love him more

  438. when we look upon him.

  439. Third,

  440. what happens

  441. with this love?

  442. What are the implications

  443. of this love?

  444. Now,

  445. we've got to look

  446. around the chapter

  447. a little bit

  448. for this.

  449. Verse 13.

  450. When we love God,

  451. God is glorified.

  452. Whatever you ask

  453. in my name,

  454. this I will do

  455. in order that

  456. the Father may be glorified

  457. in the Son.

  458. When we ask for things

  459. in Christ's name

  460. for his sake,

  461. because we love him

  462. by the power

  463. of the Holy Spirit,

  464. then God gets glory.

  465. hallowed be thy name

  466. is what we pray.

  467. That is what we pray for

  468. and that is what we love for,

  469. that God will be glorified.

  470. Second,

  471. verse 31.

  472. When we love God,

  473. the world will know more

  474. about God's love.

  475. Jesus says,

  476. I do as the Father

  477. has commanded me

  478. so that the world

  479. might know

  480. that I love the Father.

  481. Jesus' self-sacrifice

  482. displays

  483. in the greatest way

  484. possible

  485. that he loves the Father.

  486. And that fact

  487. cannot leave people

  488. unaffected.

  489. The presentation

  490. of Christ's self-sacrifice

  491. moves with power

  492. into the world.

  493. And our love for God

  494. in the same way

  495. adds fuel

  496. to this fire.

  497. Our response

  498. to the crucified

  499. and resurrected Christ

  500. as fuel

  501. to the fire

  502. of God's love

  503. so that the world

  504. might know

  505. about God's love.

  506. Lastly,

  507. verse 21.

  508. He who loves me

  509. will be loved

  510. by my Father

  511. and I will love him

  512. and manifest myself

  513. to him.

  514. More love for God

  515. means more love

  516. from God.

  517. And more love

  518. from God

  519. means more love

  520. for God.

  521. Now you may be

  522. getting a little nervous,

  523. right?

  524. More love from God

  525. as if we love God

  526. more and he loves us,

  527. he loves us more.

  528. I don't think that's

  529. exactly what's going on.

  530. Perhaps it's something

  531. about the manifestation

  532. of God's love

  533. appears more clearly

  534. to us

  535. when we love God.

  536. But in either case,

  537. the relationship

  538. is reciprocal.

  539. it's very clear

  540. that God loves us

  541. first.

  542. But we increase

  543. our love for God

  544. and we know more

  545. of God's love

  546. through that same

  547. process.

  548. God is glorified

  549. when we love him.

  550. The world

  551. will know more

  552. about God's love

  553. as we love him.

  554. And our understanding

  555. of God's love itself

  556. will be increased

  557. as we love him.

  558. The greatest type

  559. of love

  560. is the love

  561. that will die

  562. for the beloved.

  563. It says,

  564. I will give up

  565. my life

  566. so that you

  567. might have life.

  568. This is where

  569. the different types

  570. of love

  571. become important,

  572. right?

  573. Love for pizza,

  574. for a football team,

  575. for children,

  576. and for God.

  577. I was at a dinner

  578. on Thursday night

  579. with some teenage boys

  580. and the boy

  581. sitting across from me

  582. was 17 years old.

  583. We were talking

  584. about how we get

  585. teenage boys

  586. to, you know,

  587. attend little events,

  588. get-togethers.

  589. Let's have a movie night.

  590. Why is no one

  591. coming to the movie night?

  592. Well, you need

  593. some food there,

  594. right?

  595. And this is exactly

  596. what this guy said.

  597. I kid you not,

  598. these are his exact words.

  599. I'd do anything

  600. for three hours

  601. if there was pizza there.

  602. I'd do anything

  603. for three hours

  604. if there was pizza there.

  605. But we don't

  606. die for pizza.

  607. He might do anything

  608. for three hours,

  609. but we don't die

  610. for pizza.

  611. We don't die for dominoes

  612. because we love pizza.

  613. We don't give up

  614. our own life

  615. for the sake

  616. of a football team.

  617. But we would die

  618. for the people

  619. that we love.

  620. And Jesus

  621. dies for us

  622. because the Father

  623. loves us.

  624. and told Jesus

  625. this is what

  626. we're going to do

  627. for the world.

  628. For God so loved

  629. the world

  630. that he gave

  631. his only begotten son

  632. that whosoever

  633. believes in him

  634. might have

  635. everlasting life.

  636. you might think

  637. I can't love God.

  638. Of course you can't.

  639. But you tell God

  640. you want to love him

  641. and you ask him

  642. for the help

  643. of the Holy Spirit

  644. since that's the only way

  645. you can love him.

  646. Let's pray.
