  1. I do sit down and turn with me to Matthew chapter 5 and verse 9.

    Matthew 5 chapter mention

  2. ! Matthew chapter 5 and verse 9.

    Matthew 5 chapter mention

  3. We're going through the Beatitudes and really trying to look at the Beatitudes as a lens for how we view the Christian life.

  4. And so, it seems to me, over church history, many people took the Beatitudes and kind of learnt them, meditated on them,

  5. dwelt in them in many ways, and it was such a great blessing to the church.

  6. Often today, we just kind of do the Sermon on the Mount in about five sermons, and there's good things about that.

  7. But there's real value, I think, in taking the Beatitudes and chewing on them week by week.

  8. And so, that's where we are.

  9. Matthew 5, verse 9.

    Matthew 5:9

  10. Blessed are the peacemakers, for they should be called sons of God.

  11. Everyone loves peace, don't they?

  12. And here's the first really popular word in the Beatitudes.

  13. All the other ones we've looked at, can you see them?

  14. They've been strange and unpopular.

  15. They've been quite unusual.

  16. And so, we've seen, as we've gone through the Sermon on the Mount, these Beatitudes,

  17. how radical and how disturbing this statement of Jesus is.

  18. And so, there's not many people out there that want to be pure.

  19. There's not many people out there who are just dying to mourn, verse 4.

  20. There's not a crowd of folk in Ealing, desperate to be meek.

  21. It's not very popular.

  22. People don't think that hunger and thirst are good things.

  23. And even the last two are not valued very highly in our city, are they?

  24. Merciful and pure.

  25. But everyone, every person loves peace.

  26. Every single one of them.

  27. It's universally popular.

  28. And a peacemaker, in theory, would be valued very, very highly, wouldn't they, in our culture?

  29. So, there's a prize, isn't there?

  30. An annual prize that's given each year for peace.

  31. The Nobel Peace Prize.

  32. It's a big thing when people win it.

  33. It's in the news.

  34. It's given from the proceeds of a manufacturer of gunpowder, Nobel.

  35. Universities have peace studies.

  36. Peace.

  37. There are peace processes.

  38. There are peace initiatives.

  39. Peace is a good thing.

  40. And yet, we live in a world that's pretty bereft of peace.

  41. Out of the last 4,000 years, there have been about 320 years of peace.

  42. I don't really know how they work that out.

  43. But on a personal level, there's not much peace around our society.

  44. Our society is not notably peaceful.

  45. Family breakup.

  46. Lockdown and domestic abuse.

  47. Well-being.

  48. Stress.

  49. Mental health.

  50. Those things are so popular, aren't they, to talk about?

  51. It's decided as a good thing.

  52. Good mental health, people think is elusive and hard to obtain.

  53. And so, I think it sharpens our interest when we come to verse 9.

  54. What is Jesus talking about?

  55. And so, I want to kind of look at it from three directions.

  56. First of all, who we are.

  57. Who are we as the people of God?

  58. Well, it says, blessed are the peacemakers.

  59. And so, it's really important that the context tells you and I that this doesn't stand on its own.

  60. We see that this Beatitudes comes after other Beatitudes.

  61. And so, what you've got in the Beatitudes is a picture, isn't it, of every believer.

  62. And they're not a set of unrelated qualities.

  63. It's not, well, I'm a decent mourner, and I'm pretty good at purity, or I'm more strong in peacemaking.

  64. No, Jesus is not saying there are eight sorts of people in the church with different sorts of strengths.

  65. There are some merciful, some poor in spirit, some who mourn.

  66. No, he's saying, here is the picture of Christian character.

  67. This is what it is to be a true believer in Jesus.

  68. This is what it is to be in the kingdom.

  69. It's to be true of every single one of us who's a believer.

  70. They are the birthmarks, if you like, of what it means to be born again.

  71. They are the signs of the Holy Spirit working in your life and in my life.

  72. All of us who claim to be Christians should be characterized by all of these things.

  73. And so when Jesus says, blessed are the peacemakers, he's not speaking of some activity out there,

  74. which we may or we may not choose to take on as Christian service.

  75. It's a kind of optional extra.

  76. He's not foremost, he's not kind of primarily talking about what we do.

  77. He's saying this is who we are.

  78. What are we like?

  79. What's our character, our personality?

  80. And so what we've seen, haven't we, that the Christian is somebody who's a changed person.

  81. Somebody who has been transformed by the Holy Spirit.

  82. And so that there is a part of us which works itself out in being a peacemaker.

  83. Because this man or woman or boy or girl has been changed by God so we make peace.

  84. And of course that is one of the weaknesses, isn't it, with human peacemaking.

  85. When you try to have a peace process between two communities, it can be too superficial.

  86. Because mere human peacekeeping never deals with the real issue.

  87. And the real issue is with what people are like inside.

  88. And so you and I can cobble together a peace process.

  89. And while it's made between people who are not peaceable, it'll never be permanent.

  90. And so the world, when it talks about peace, it deals with external factors.

  91. And it never deals with the real problem.

  92. So in James chapter 4, verse 1, if you turn there if you want to, you'll find that there's a really profound analysis.

    James 4:1

  93. James says, what causes fights?

  94. What causes quarrels among you?

  95. Think about that.

  96. There's a quarrel in a church.

  97. Or there's an argument in a church.

  98. And there's hostility in a family, maybe.

  99. Or in the workplace.

  100. What causes that?

  101. What is behind that?

  102. Well, you could look, couldn't you, at all sorts of external factors.

  103. And say, it's because of this.

  104. It's because of lack of sleep.

  105. It's because of lockdown.

  106. It's because of the pressure people are under.

  107. But James goes way deeper than that.

  108. He says, don't they come from your desires that battle within you?

  109. You see, the reason that there are conflicts and arguments,

  110. and quarrels,

  111. and fights,

  112. is because of the people we are.

  113. It is the sin within us.

  114. And so most human effort at peacekeeping

  115. is rather like, isn't it,

  116. trying to clean up a river downstream

  117. from where the pollution is coming into the river.

  118. And you and I need to remember that

  119. blessed are the peacemakers

  120. is the seventh beatitude.

  121. It doesn't stress,

  122. it doesn't stand alone.

  123. So,

  124. blessed are the peacemakers

  125. is addressed to people who are,

  126. look at verse three,

  127. poor in spirit.

  128. So it's saying that you and I,

  129. as Christians,

  130. we are not to be proud.

  131. We're not to be arrogant.

  132. We're not to be people that know it all.

  133. We're not to try and dominate.

  134. We're to recognize

  135. our own personal guilt

  136. and our own personal weakness

  137. and our own wrongdoing

  138. that actually you and I

  139. are like beggars before God.

  140. And we are to be people,

  141. verse four,

  142. who mourn.

  143. That is,

  144. we're really sorry

  145. and we're ashamed

  146. for our own sin

  147. and for our own weaknesses.

  148. And that leads,

  149. doesn't it,

  150. verse five,

  151. to make us meek.

  152. So we're not always trying

  153. to get our own way all the time.

  154. We're not trying to manipulate

  155. the situation

  156. so we get our way.

  157. We don't try to get everyone

  158. to follow us.

  159. We don't think

  160. we always know best.

  161. We remember our own weakness

  162. and our own frailty

  163. and our own guilt.

  164. And we're meek.

  165. And because we recognize that,

  166. we long above everything else

  167. for holiness,

  168. verse six,

  169. for righteousness.

  170. We long for God's will to be done.

  171. And so we are merciful

  172. because we find it easy

  173. to forgive and forget.

  174. And we find it easy

  175. to pardon our fellow human beings.

  176. We're not judgmental.

  177. We're not harsh.

  178. And we don't have long memories.

  179. Why?

  180. Because the Christian recognizes

  181. that God has forgotten

  182. our sins.

  183. And because God

  184. has forgotten our sins,

  185. so we have to be willing

  186. to forget the sins of others.

  187. And so the person

  188. who was described here

  189. doesn't bring things up

  190. from years ago

  191. and use them as clubs

  192. to beat people over the head with.

  193. Because God would never

  194. do that with us.

  195. God never says,

  196. you're always doing this.

  197. Remember you did that

  198. five years ago?

  199. And so we're merciful people.

  200. And we're pure in heart

  201. with a single eye for God

  202. and for his glory.

  203. And then having said

  204. all of that,

  205. Jesus then says,

  206. he says,

  207. and blessed are the peacemakers.

  208. because we see ourselves

  209. in a new way

  210. as a result of the Beatitudes.

  211. We're not nearly as important

  212. as we once thought we were.

  213. We're not nearly as clever

  214. as we once thought we were.

  215. We're not nearly as good

  216. as we thought we were.

  217. We're a lot humbler.

  218. And we're a lot more realistic

  219. about ourselves

  220. and about others.

  221. And we see other people

  222. in a new way.

  223. And we love them.

  224. And when we see their faults,

  225. we know that we have faults.

  226. And because we've experienced mercy,

  227. we are merciful towards them

  228. and meek towards them.

  229. Because love covers over

  230. a multitude of sins.

  231. So blessed are the peacemakers.

  232. And we take on

  233. the essential character

  234. of peacemakers.

  235. It's not a mask that we wear.

  236. It's not a duty

  237. that we give ourselves to.

  238. It's not a course

  239. that we go on.

  240. What is being a peacemaker?

  241. It is the overflow

  242. of real spirituality.

  243. And so please don't take

  244. verse 9

  245. out of its context

  246. and

  247. kind of

  248. out of its place

  249. in the sermon.

  250. What I'm saying

  251. or what I'm trying to say

  252. is that

  253. for all the benefits

  254. of peace to come,

  255. you and I

  256. need to be changed people.

  257. We need to be

  258. pure in spirit

  259. and mourning

  260. and meek

  261. and merciful.

  262. And you can't have peace

  263. without that.

  264. And so I'm saying

  265. as we consider this text,

  266. it's vital to consider

  267. the other text.

  268. It's vital

  269. for you and I

  270. to work out

  271. our own spiritual growth.

  272. That is our reading

  273. of scripture,

  274. our prayer,

  275. our putting sin

  276. to death,

  277. our dealing

  278. with ourselves,

  279. our growing

  280. in faith

  281. and love.

  282. because that's all

  283. part of the picture.

  284. There are no shortcuts

  285. into becoming

  286. a peacemaker.

  287. You can't take it up

  288. as a hobby

  289. or a little extra

  290. Christian activity.

  291. And so the truth

  292. is this, isn't it?

  293. It is probably

  294. too late

  295. in church,

  296. in a church,

  297. when trouble comes

  298. to be thinking

  299. then

  300. and only

  301. then

  302. of being

  303. peacemakers.

  304. Because when

  305. trouble comes

  306. in a church

  307. or a family,

  308. it doesn't just

  309. come like that.

  310. People always say

  311. that to me.

  312. They always say,

  313. we didn't see it coming.

  314. It just came

  315. out of nowhere.

  316. It never comes

  317. out of nowhere.

  318. Never, ever.

  319. In a church context,

  320. the rot sets in

  321. normally years

  322. after earlier.

  323. There's been a failure

  324. in vital

  325. godliness.

  326. And then you see

  327. the fruit of it.

  328. And the problem

  329. didn't arise

  330. in a week,

  331. one meeting,

  332. or a month.

  333. It had been something

  334. that had been going on

  335. for a long time.

  336. And so you've got

  337. to keep the verse

  338. in its context.

  339. Who we are,

  340. changed people,

  341. people in whom

  342. God's spirit is working,

  343. people who are growing

  344. in Christ.

  345. And so it points

  346. to who we are.

  347. Secondly,

  348. it points to what we do.

  349. What we do.

  350. So in verse 9,

  351. blessed are the peacemakers.

  352. And so we need to begin

  353. with a couple of negatives,

  354. don't we?

  355. Peacemakers are not

  356. people who are easygoing,

  357. who avoid confrontation.

  358. They're not wimps.

  359. Peacemakers are not weak,

  360. and they're not ineffectual,

  361. and they're not cowards,

  362. and they're not compromising.

  363. And that's not what

  364. Jesus is talking about,

  365. isn't he?

  366. Peace has to be based

  367. on truth and righteousness.

  368. And in reality,

  369. sweeping things

  370. under the carpet,

  371. it doesn't make peace.

  372. Ignoring wickedness

  373. doesn't make peace.

  374. God speaks,

  375. doesn't he,

  376. in Jeremiah 6,

    Jeremiah 6:14

  377. verse 14,

  378. they're famous verses.

  379. And he speaks

  380. to the preachers of the day,

  381. the leaders of the day,

  382. and he says,

  383. you dress the wound

  384. of my people

  385. as if it wasn't serious.

  386. You say,

  387. peace, peace.

  388. But there is no peace.

  389. And so in your own marriage,

  390. and in your own family,

  391. and in your own home,

  392. to sweep things

  393. under the carpet

  394. is not making peace.

  395. To bury things

  396. in the sand

  397. is not making peace.

  398. To ignore something

  399. is not what our Lord

  400. is talking about here.

  401. And he's not just speaking

  402. about peace keepers,

  403. if I can put it like that.

  404. They're vital, aren't they?

  405. We are to be people

  406. who are peaceable.

  407. We're to control

  408. our tempers.

  409. Proverbs 15,

  410. 18 says,

  411. a hot-tempered man

  412. stirs up dissension.

  413. We'll control our speech.

  414. Proverbs 15, verse 1,

    Proverbs 15:1

  415. a gentle answer

  416. turns away wrath.

  417. But a harsh word

  418. stirs up anger.

  419. We've got to avoid gossip.

  420. It's a plague, isn't it?

  421. And it's a curse

  422. in church life.

  423. So Proverbs 26, 20 says,

  424. without a wood,

  425. the fire goes out.

  426. Without gossip,

  427. a quarrel dies down.

  428. And we have to be

  429. peaceable people.

  430. We'll see later on

  431. in Romans,

  432. the Apostle Paul says,

  433. as far as it's possible,

  434. live at peace with everyone.

  435. And so we've got to be

  436. peaceable,

  437. men and women

  438. and boys and girls,

  439. not always looking

  440. for a fight.

  441. But I think there's

  442. more than that here

  443. that Jesus is saying.

  444. He is saying,

  445. blessed are the

  446. peacemakers,

  447. not just those

  448. who keep the peace,

  449. as important as that is.

  450. It's going further

  451. than that, isn't it?

  452. It's making peace.

  453. It is bringing peace.

  454. It is creating peace.

  455. It is establishing peace.

  456. It's a very

  457. positive,

  458. dynamic quality.

  459. And so,

  460. when we think of peace,

  461. how do we think of it

  462. in our culture?

  463. We think of peace

  464. as the absence of war.

  465. But in the Bible,

  466. the word peace

  467. is far richer,

  468. far more beautiful.

  469. It's a far more

  470. beautiful concept.

  471. peace in the Bible

  472. is a state of

  473. well-being

  474. and wholeness

  475. and prosperity

  476. and safety

  477. and blessing.

  478. So with us,

  479. the way we think of peace,

  480. we think of peace

  481. as the absence of something.

  482. The absence of war

  483. or the absence of fighting.

  484. But in the Bible,

  485. peace is the presence

  486. of something.

  487. It is the presence

  488. of wholeness

  489. and prosperity

  490. and soundness

  491. and blessing.

  492. It's a positive thing.

  493. So being a peacemaker

  494. is much richer.

  495. It is much

  496. more wonderful

  497. than stopping fights.

  498. Being a peacemaker

  499. is creating wholeness

  500. and wellness

  501. and prosperity.

  502. peacemakers

  503. and so peacemakers

  504. repair gaps.

  505. Peacemakers

  506. heal preaches.

  507. Peacemakers

  508. bring people

  509. together.

  510. Peacemakers

  511. want to create

  512. unity

  513. and soundness

  514. to create

  515. God's

  516. shalom.

  517. God's peace.

  518. for you and I to be peacemakers

  519. that will mean we've got to listen

  520. listen to people

  521. to take time to understand

  522. what they're saying and where they're coming from

  523. and very often to differentiate

  524. between what they say and what they mean

  525. because

  526. people often

  527. don't always say what they mean

  528. or mean what they say

  529. and so

  530. as we listen we are asking

  531. what is this person trying to communicate to me

  532. peacemakers want to reduce

  533. tension and look for solutions

  534. not to describe

  535. problems or make them worse

  536. peacemaking is positive and constructive

  537. and healing

  538. so Paul says in Romans 14 verse 19

    Romans 14:19

  539. let us make every effort

  540. to do what leads to peace

  541. and mutual edification

  542. and so above all isn't it

  543. above everything else

  544. what peacemaking surely means

  545. is telling the gospel to people

  546. because that is isn't it

  547. the finest and the most ultimate

  548. and the most permanent

  549. and the most constructive way of making peace

  550. telling people of a God in heaven

  551. who has sent his son

  552. the Lord Jesus Christ

  553. the saviour

  554. so that

  555. you and I can have peace with God

  556. and as we've seen in Romans

  557. peace with God

  558. is not just

  559. absence of hostility

  560. it's not just that the war is over

  561. but there's wholeness

  562. and blessing

  563. fullness

  564. the fruit of the spirit

  565. Galatians 5.22

  566. the fruit of the spirit

  567. is love

  568. joy

  569. peace

  570. patience

  571. kindness

  572. goodness

  573. faithfulness

  574. gentleness

  575. and self-control

  576. and so when you have people

  577. filled with the Holy Spirit

  578. you will have peace

  579. and so what we do is

  580. we're to be healers

  581. builders

  582. facilitators

  583. bringing people together

  584. to bring God's

  585. shalom

  586. to the earth

  587. that's part of our family calling

  588. isn't it

  589. that is part of

  590. the creation mandate

  591. of Genesis 1.27

  592. to rule and subdue the earth

  593. it is to bring order

  594. and beauty

  595. out of the chaos

  596. in God's world

  597. subduing the earth

  598. who we are

  599. and what we do

  600. and then lastly

  601. who we resemble

  602. who do we resemble

  603. blessed are the peacemakers

  604. for they shall be called

  605. sons of God

  606. it's sometimes

  607. mistranslated

  608. children of God

  609. but it's

  610. sons of God

  611. our children

  612. refers to our

  613. status

  614. sons

  615. refers to our

  616. nature

  617. we're all

  618. aren't we

  619. part of the

  620. bride of Christ

  621. I hope

  622. you men

  623. rejoice in that

  624. we are part of

  625. the bride of Christ

  626. there's no kind of

  627. sexist

  628. in this

  629. when the New Testament

  630. speaks about the

  631. sons of God

  632. we are all

  633. sons in the

  634. son

  635. there's nothing

  636. sexist

  637. for you women

  638. in being

  639. sons of God

  640. our identity

  641. our character

  642. Jesus is saying

  643. we are the

  644. offspring of God

  645. we bear the

  646. likeness of our

  647. father

  648. and he says

  649. if we are

  650. peacemakers

  651. we will be

  652. recognized by

  653. other people

  654. and they will

  655. say

  656. ah

  657. they are

  658. sons of God

  659. they will be

  660. known and

  661. acknowledged as

  662. sons of God

  663. like the

  664. son of God

  665. and we can really

  666. understand that

  667. can't we

  668. easily understand

  669. that because

  670. God

  671. as we saw

  672. this morning

  673. God is the

  674. great peacemaker

  675. isn't that the

  676. whole history

  677. of redemption

  678. from the

  679. moment that

  680. Adam and Eve

  681. fall

  682. to the second

  683. coming of

  684. the Lord Jesus

  685. Christ

  686. what is it

  687. the story of

  688. the whole of

  689. the Bible

  690. is the story

  691. of God

  692. bringing peace

  693. to his

  694. disturbed

  695. and disordered

  696. world

  697. and the

  698. gospel

  699. is the

  700. gospel of

  701. peace

  702. the good news

  703. of peace

  704. Satan

  705. came

  706. into the

  707. garden

  708. of Eden

  709. and he

  710. disrupts

  711. the space

  712. he came

  713. into

  714. and he

  715. breaks

  716. the unity

  717. he breaks

  718. what is it

  719. in Eden

  720. is it

  721. just in the

  722. absence of

  723. war

  724. no there's

  725. shalom

  726. in Eden

  727. isn't there

  728. there's

  729. fullness

  730. there's

  731. wholeness

  732. there's

  733. beauty

  734. and Satan

  735. comes and

  736. he disturbs

  737. that

  738. and yet

  739. God

  740. in his

  741. plan of

  742. redemption

  743. has sent

  744. his son

  745. into this

  746. world

  747. to heal

  748. the world

  749. he is the

  750. prince of

  751. peace

  752. and God

  753. promised

  754. this

  755. doesn't he

  756. I will

  757. make a

  758. covenant

  759. of

  760. peace

  761. with

  762. them

  763. and the

  764. Lord

  765. Jesus

  766. when he

  767. left

  768. his

  769. disciples

  770. do you

  771. remember

  772. what he

  773. said

  774. he said

  775. he breathed

  776. on them

  777. and said

  778. peace

  779. be unto

  780. you

  781. and the

  782. apostle Paul

  783. as he

  784. calls

  785. God's

  786. blessing

  787. unto

  788. people

  789. what does

  790. he say

  791. he says

  792. grace

  793. mercy

  794. and peace

  795. to you

  796. and so

  797. when Jesus

  798. returns

  799. he will

  800. bring with

  801. him the

  802. complete

  803. and everlasting

  804. peace

  805. of God

  806. and in that

  807. promise in Isaiah

  808. Jesus is who

  809. he is the

  810. prince of

  811. peace

  812. and so

  813. God is the

  814. God of

  815. peace

  816. and his

  817. work is

  818. in that of

  819. bringing peace

  820. and wholeness

  821. and unity

  822. and soundness

  823. and blessing

  824. that's what we

  825. look forward to

  826. when we come to

  827. the Lord's

  828. table

  829. when there

  830. will be

  831. wholeness

  832. and unity

  833. and soundness

  834. and blessing

  835. and we will

  836. partake of the

  837. wedding supper

  838. of the Lamb

  839. and so what I

  840. think Jesus is

  841. saying to us

  842. is that when we

  843. make peace

  844. we are

  845. God like

  846. we are

  847. God like

  848. and truly

  849. that's

  850. tremendously

  851. encouraging

  852. isn't it

  853. to us

  854. we make

  855. peace

  856. with a

  857. friend

  858. we've

  859. had an

  860. argument

  861. with someone

  862. there's

  863. been a

  864. coldness

  865. between

  866. us

  867. or a

  868. quarrel

  869. so I

  870. need to

  871. say to

  872. you this

  873. it is

  874. a

  875. God

  876. like

  877. thing

  878. and it

  879. is a

  880. Christ

  881. like

  882. thing

  883. to

  884. make

  885. peace

  886. to go

  887. to that

  888. person

  889. and make

  890. peace

  891. when our

  892. children have

  893. been angry

  894. with us

  895. and they're

  896. irate

  897. with us

  898. we put

  899. our hand

  900. on their

  901. shoulder

  902. and we

  903. tell them

  904. that we

  905. love them

  906. and we

  907. speak

  908. gently

  909. to them

  910. and wisely

  911. and we

  912. make

  913. peace

  914. that is

  915. a

  916. God

  917. like

  918. thing

  919. that is

  920. a

  921. Christ

  922. like

  923. thing

  924. and when

  925. you go to

  926. two friends

  927. who've

  928. fallen out

  929. with each

  930. other

  931. and you

  932. pray

  933. and you

  934. talk with

  935. them

  936. and you

  937. seek to

  938. help them

  939. understand

  940. and to

  941. help each

  942. other

  943. and to

  944. forgive each

  945. other

  946. and you

  947. try to

  948. bring them

  949. together

  950. as best

  951. you can

  952. that is

  953. a

  954. God

  955. like

  956. thing

  957. and a

  958. Christ

  959. like

  960. thing

  961. to

  962. go into

  963. a church

  964. when it's

  965. divided

  966. and to

  967. try and

  968. bring

  969. people

  970. together

  971. and not

  972. make the

  973. situation

  974. worse

  975. that is

  976. a God

  977. like thing

  978. to do

  979. and a

  980. Christ like

  981. thing to

  982. do

  983. and God

  984. says

  985. blessed are

  986. the peacemakers

  987. for they will be

  988. called the sons

  989. of God

  990. we resemble

  991. God

  992. when we

  993. make

  994. peace

  995. in some ways

  996. I could finish

  997. there but

  998. I think

  999. we need

  1000. to see

  1001. the

  1002. challenge

  1003. of

  1004. these

  1005. verses

  1006. because

  1007. it's

  1008. all very

  1009. well and

  1010. good for

  1011. me to

  1012. say to

  1013. you

  1014. it is

  1015. God

  1016. like

  1017. when you

  1018. make

  1019. peace

  1020. and that's

  1021. a great

  1022. encouragement

  1023. but we

  1024. need to

  1025. understand

  1026. how did

  1027. God

  1028. make

  1029. peace

  1030. so

  1031. let me

  1032. read you

  1033. from

  1034. Colossians

    Colossians 1 chapter mention

  1035. chapter

  1036. 1

  1037. it was

  1038. our

  1039. assurance

  1040. of

  1041. pardon

  1042. this

  1043. morning

  1044. Colossians

    Colossians 1 chapter mention

  1045. chapter

  1046. 1

  1047. and

  1048. verse

  1049. 19

  1050. for

  1051. in him

  1052. that's the

  1053. Lord Jesus

  1054. Christ

  1055. all the

  1056. fullness

  1057. of God

  1058. was pleased

  1059. to dwell

  1060. and through

  1061. him to

  1062. reconcile

  1063. that's to

  1064. make peace

  1065. to bring

  1066. back

  1067. together

  1068. to himself

  1069. all things

  1070. whether on

  1071. earth or

  1072. in heaven

  1073. making peace

  1074. by the

  1075. blood

  1076. of his

  1077. cross

  1078. peace

  1079. and so

  1080. if there's

  1081. anything

  1082. that's

  1083. clear

  1084. in the

  1085. New

  1086. Testament

  1087. it's

  1088. this

  1089. it is

  1090. this

  1091. that it

  1092. costs

  1093. God

  1094. to make

  1095. peace

  1096. and making

  1097. peace

  1098. is costly

  1099. one of the

  1100. Puritans

  1101. said

  1102. the God

  1103. who said

  1104. let there

  1105. be light

  1106. could not

  1107. say

  1108. let there

  1109. be peace

  1110. the God

  1111. who said

  1112. let there

  1113. be light

  1114. could not

  1115. say

  1116. let there

  1117. be peace

  1118. because God

  1119. had to

  1120. make

  1121. peace

  1122. and God

  1123. made peace

  1124. through the

  1125. blood of

  1126. his son

  1127. shed on

  1128. the cross

  1129. and peace

  1130. making in

  1131. the Bible

  1132. the gospel

  1133. tells us

  1134. is very

  1135. very costly

  1136. and so

  1137. tonight

  1138. as we come

  1139. to this

  1140. table

  1141. we rejoice

  1142. in God

  1143. because we

  1144. have come

  1145. to peace

  1146. with God

  1147. through the

  1148. life and

  1149. death

  1150. of the

  1151. blessed

  1152. son

  1153. of God

  1154. and as

  1155. you eat

  1156. of the

  1157. bread

  1158. and as

  1159. you drink

  1160. of the

  1161. wine

  1162. it

  1163. reminds

  1164. you

  1165. of the

  1166. cost

  1167. of peace

  1168. this

  1169. is my

  1170. body

  1171. given

  1172. for you

  1173. this

  1174. is my

  1175. blood

  1176. shed

  1177. for you

  1178. and so

  1179. it is

  1180. with us

  1181. chapter 5

  1182. verse 1

  1183. seeing the

  1184. crowds

  1185. he ran

  1186. up on

  1187. the

  1188. mountain

  1189. and when

  1190. he sat

  1191. down

  1192. his

  1193. disciples

  1194. came to

  1195. him

  1196. and so

  1197. what you've

  1198. got in

  1199. the

  1200. sermon

  1201. on the

  1202. mountain

  1203. is you've

  1204. got him

  1205. speaking to

  1206. the

  1207. disciples

  1208. with the

  1209. crowd

  1210. listening

  1211. in

  1212. and amongst

  1213. that crowd

  1214. there would

  1215. have been

  1216. hardline

  1217. right wing

  1218. conservative

  1219. Jewish

  1220. nationalists

  1221. and as

  1222. Jesus preached

  1223. to them

  1224. that day

  1225. they hated

  1226. the Romans

  1227. they were

  1228. desperate

  1229. that the

  1230. Romans

  1231. would be

  1232. got rid

  1233. of out

  1234. of their

  1235. land

  1236. and their

  1237. eyebrows

  1238. would have

  1239. been raised

  1240. and they

  1241. would have

  1242. sneered

  1243. when Jesus

  1244. said

  1245. blessed are

  1246. the peacemakers

  1247. it was a

  1248. hard thing

  1249. for Jesus

  1250. to say

  1251. in a

  1252. kind of

  1253. politically

  1254. charged

  1255. atmosphere

  1256. but think

  1257. for a

  1258. moment

  1259. what did

  1260. it mean

  1261. for Jesus

  1262. when he

  1263. says

  1264. this

  1265. that

  1266. when he

  1267. says

  1268. blessed

  1269. are the

  1270. peacemakers

  1271. for they

  1272. should be

  1273. called

  1274. sons

  1275. of

  1276. God

  1277. he

  1278. knows

  1279. what it

  1280. will cost

  1281. him

  1282. to make

  1283. peace

  1284. that he

  1285. was going

  1286. to die

  1287. on a

  1288. cross

  1289. to make

  1290. peace

  1291. it's not

  1292. sentimental

  1293. is it

  1294. he would

  1295. lay his

  1296. body

  1297. on the

  1298. line

  1299. to make

  1300. peace

  1301. the peace

  1302. that we

  1303. enjoy

  1304. blessed

  1305. are the

  1306. peacemakers

  1307. and I

  1308. need to

  1309. say to

  1310. you

  1311. it is

  1312. costly

  1313. if we're

  1314. going to

  1315. do

  1316. this

  1317. and so

  1318. this week

  1319. who is

  1320. there

  1321. that you

  1322. can make

  1323. peace

  1324. with

  1325. and there

  1326. will be

  1327. situations

  1328. I expect

  1329. for the

  1330. people in

  1331. this room

  1332. in your

  1333. family

  1334. in your

  1335. circle

  1336. in your

  1337. friendships

  1338. in this

  1339. church

  1340. even

  1341. where

  1342. the Holy

  1343. Spirit

  1344. is

  1345. speaking

  1346. to you

  1347. through

  1348. this

  1349. verse

  1350. and saying

  1351. to you

  1352. you need

  1353. to make

  1354. peace

  1355. and making

  1356. peace

  1357. pleases

  1358. God

  1359. and I

  1360. don't say

  1361. that sentimentally

  1362. I know

  1363. that is

  1364. costly

  1365. and for

  1366. peace

  1367. to be

  1368. made

  1369. it may

  1370. well be

  1371. absorbing

  1372. an awful

  1373. lot of

  1374. pain

  1375. and an

  1376. awful lot

  1377. of hurt

  1378. and coming

  1379. to the

  1380. Lord

  1381. Jesus

  1382. and saying

  1383. I can

  1384. only do

  1385. this

  1386. in your

  1387. strength

  1388. sometimes

  1389. being accused

  1390. being a

  1391. peacemaker

  1392. is accused

  1393. of being

  1394. a compromiser

  1395. it's often

  1396. that in

  1397. church life

  1398. sometimes

  1399. when you

  1400. try to

  1401. make peace

  1402. people will

  1403. say why

  1404. don't you

  1405. just mind

  1406. your own

  1407. business

  1408. nothing to

  1409. do with

  1410. you

  1411. people

  1412. won't

  1413. understand

  1414. but what

  1415. a way

  1416. to spend

  1417. our

  1418. lives

  1419. blessed

  1420. are the

  1421. peacemakers

  1422. for they

  1423. will be

  1424. called

  1425. sons

  1426. of

  1427. God

  1428. and we

  1429. follow a

  1430. saviour

  1431. who made

  1432. peace

  1433. and he

  1434. made peace

  1435. at the

  1436. cost of

  1437. his life

  1438. as it

  1439. seems to

  1440. me that

  1441. we are

  1442. never more

  1443. Christ-like

  1444. and we

  1445. are never

  1446. more

  1447. God-like

  1448. than when

  1449. we're seeking

  1450. to make

  1451. peace

  1452. and it

  1453. may be

  1454. for you

  1455. that it's

  1456. a very

  1457. small

  1458. and limited

  1459. way

  1460. that whatever

  1461. way this

  1462. week you

  1463. can make

  1464. peace

  1465. but when

  1466. you do

  1467. that

  1468. blessed

  1469. are you

  1470. that you

  1471. should be

  1472. called

  1473. sons of

  1474. God

  1475. let's

  1476. pray
