  1. Well, please do turn with me in your Bibles, if you have one with you, to this very remarkable Psalm, Psalm 88.

  2. ! I wonder if, like me, you often find the Bible deeply unsettling reading.

  3. The Bible not only richly encourages us,

  4. it at times profoundly perplexes us.

  5. And that's because, I think, there is an intense honesty in the Bible about the life of faith.

  6. The life of faith is lived before the God who is from everlasting to everlasting,

  7. whose thoughts are higher than our thoughts, whose ways are higher and holier and wiser than our ways.

  8. We live our days out before Him who has ordained all things from the beginning to the end.

  9. And it shouldn't surprise us that life can be deeply, profoundly, unsettlingly perplexing.

  10. I wonder if you've ever realized that over 40% of the book of Psalms is laments.

  11. 59 of the 150 Psalms are laments.

  12. Songs in a minor key, sometimes so minor as Psalm 88,

  13. you can hardly lift your voice out of the depths to sing them.

  14. I wonder if you've ever asked yourself,

  15. why are there so many laments in the book of Psalms?

  16. This was the songbook of God's Old Covenant Church.

  17. This was the songbook of our Lord Jesus Christ.

  18. He would have sung the Psalms.

  19. Why so many laments?

  20. Well, of course, the answer is very simple, isn't it?

  21. The life of faith is lived out in a fallen, anti-God, anti-Christ world.

  22. The life of faith is lived out in a world where the evil one, the devil himself,

  23. holds remarkable sway under the sovereign, overruling power and purpose of God.

  24. And we have added to that the constant tension of indwelling sin,

  25. the sin that yet remains within us to humble us,

  26. and at times bring us so low,

  27. we all must wonder,

  28. Lord, is it possible that someone like me could really be a Christian?

  29. Maybe you've never thought that.

  30. You would be an unusual beast if you never have.

  31. Indwelling sin can be so humbling, so disheartening.

  32. You think, Lord, here I am again,

  33. after so many years,

  34. confessing the same sins.

  35. When will I ever learn?

  36. Have I ever learned?

  37. I've been thinking these past months somewhat about how the Lord Jesus Christ

  38. was always pressing on would-be disciples,

  39. the cost that would be involved in following Him.

  40. We know these words so well,

  41. unless you take up your cross and follow me,

  42. you cannot be my disciple.

  43. But I wonder if we really pause long enough to ask ourselves,

  44. what exactly is Jesus saying here?

  45. He isn't saying that life will be full of minor inconveniences

  46. that will bring a little bit of disturbance into your life.

  47. He's saying,

  48. unless you're ready to die,

  49. and to die a cruel,

  50. viciously cruel death,

  51. for me,

  52. you cannot be my disciple.

  53. Imagine someone came to you tonight and said,

  54. I know you're a Christian.

  55. Tell me,

  56. what must I do to become a follower of Jesus Christ?

  57. And you say to them,

  58. well, our Lord says,

  59. unless you take up your cross and follow Him,

  60. unless you hate father, mother, wife,

  61. husband, child, friend,

  62. compared to your love to Him,

  63. you cannot be His disciple.

  64. I just wonder what they would think.

  65. Are you serious?

  66. Do you not want me to belong

  67. to the community of faith to which you belong?

  68. And you would say,

  69. with all my heart,

  70. but I need to tell you,

  71. because this is what our Lord Jesus tells us,

  72. that the life of faith can be profoundly,

  73. unsettlingly,

  74. deeply,

  75. pervasively,

  76. overwhelmingly,

  77. dark,

  78. and difficult.

  79. Psalm 88 is an extreme song of lament.

  80. We're not told why this man of God

  81. is suffering so overwhelmingly.

  82. Some suggest,

  83. some suggest,

  84. with the introduction,

  85. a song,

  86. a psalm of the sons of Korah

  87. to the choir master,

  88. according to Mahaloth,

  89. Le'anoth.

  90. Some suggest,

  91. excellent Hebrew scholars,

  92. that they are,

  93. that the words reflect something

  94. of mental disturbance.

  95. silence.

  96. But we're not told.

  97. And we're not told,

  98. perhaps,

  99. so that the psalm can apply

  100. to God's overwhelmed people,

  101. no matter the reason

  102. for their desolation and desperation.

  103. for this man is desolate and desperate.

  104. And do you notice how the psalm ends?

  105. I think our English versions tend to smooth out the Hebrew.

  106. My companions have become darkness.

  107. I think probably better,

  108. darkness is my only friend.

  109. Darkness is my only friend.

  110. Verse 8,

  111. You have caused my companions to shun me.

  112. You have made me a horror to them.

  113. All I've got left is darkness.

  114. darkness.

  115. No spark of hope.

  116. No upbeat ending.

  117. You know,

  118. you meet Christians

  119. and they always seem to give the impression

  120. that everything will turn out fine.

  121. Just believe.

  122. You want to avoid people like that,

  123. as you would avoid the plague.

  124. No upbeat ending.

  125. This is one man's experience,

  126. but God in His wisdom

  127. has inscripturated it

  128. in the songbook

  129. of His people.

  130. Now, we don't know who this Haman was.

  131. There is a Haman

  132. who is mentioned in 1 Chronicles 6.

  133. He was one of the temple singers

  134. that David appointed

  135. to celebrate

  136. when the temple would be built.

  137. Possibly it's him.

  138. We don't really know who he was.

  139. We don't know

  140. really the nature of his suffering.

  141. Was it mental?

  142. Was it spiritual?

  143. Was it physical?

  144. Was it a combination of all three?

  145. What we do know

  146. is that his whole being

  147. is shrouded in darkness.

  148. God seems to have

  149. abandoned him.

  150. And darkness

  151. is his only

  152. companion.

  153. So, in this psalm,

  154. we are confronted

  155. with a man

  156. whose life

  157. is a life

  158. of unrelieved,

  159. unceasing,

  160. moment by moment,

  161. day by day,

  162. utter turmoil.

  163. Every moment

  164. of the day

  165. he is bereft.

  166. Look what he says

  167. in verse 16 and 17.

  168. Your wrath

  169. has swept over me.

  170. Your dreadful assaults

  171. destroy me.

  172. They surround me

  173. like a flood

  174. all

  175. day

  176. long.

  177. There's

  178. not a moment

  179. where he finds

  180. relief

  181. from the desolations

  182. that have

  183. enshrouded him

  184. and overwhelmed him.

  185. everywhere he looks,

  186. it seems

  187. that his God,

  188. the God of his salvation,

  189. look what he writes

  190. in verse 1,

  191. O Lord,

  192. God of my salvation.

  193. Everywhere he looks,

  194. it seems to him

  195. from the providences

  196. of his life

  197. that the God

  198. of his salvation

  199. has abandoned him,

  200. turned against him,

  201. he is

  202. a broken

  203. man.

  204. Now,

  205. before I say

  206. a number of things

  207. about the psalm,

  208. I want to

  209. ask a question.

  210. Is

  211. Henman

  212. a depressed

  213. believer?

  214. believer?

  215. That would be

  216. the conclusion

  217. that we could

  218. perhaps most

  219. obviously jump to

  220. as we read

  221. through the psalm.

  222. Here is a man

  223. who is in the depths

  224. of depression.

  225. And it may be

  226. the case.

  227. But I wonder

  228. myself

  229. if the truth

  230. is actually

  231. a little more

  232. profound

  233. than that.

  234. it's not

  235. that he

  236. is depressed.

  237. It is

  238. that he

  239. is a

  240. faithful

  241. believer

  242. who is

  243. experiencing

  244. the cost

  245. of faithfulness

  246. to the

  247. God of his

  248. salvation.

  249. You know

  250. the Psalms

  251. 42 and 43,

  252. why are you

  253. cast down,

  254. O my soul?

  255. Why are you

  256. so distressed

  257. within me?

  258. You read

  259. most commentaries

  260. and they say,

  261. here is a

  262. depressed

  263. believer.

  264. I don't think

  265. it is a

  266. depressed

  267. believer.

  268. I think

  269. it is

  270. someone who

  271. has entered

  272. into the

  273. experience

  274. of the

  275. costliness

  276. of

  277. faithfulness.

  278. Now don't

  279. get me wrong,

  280. depression is

  281. real and

  282. Christians can

  283. easily get

  284. depressed,

  285. overwhelmingly

  286. depressed.

  287. But perhaps

  288. here we

  289. are seeing

  290. a man

  291. who is

  292. where he

  293. is,

  294. not so

  295. much because

  296. of mental

  297. disturbance,

  298. or perhaps

  299. even of

  300. physical

  301. illness that

  302. has caused

  303. his companions

  304. to shun him

  305. as he puts

  306. it.

  307. Some

  308. commentators

  309. think that

  310. he has a

  311. severe case

  312. of leprosy.

  313. But perhaps

  314. we're simply

  315. being confronted

  316. with a man

  317. who is

  318. agonizing

  319. over the

  320. fact that

  321. the Lord

  322. God Almighty

  323. is the God

  324. of his

  325. salvation.

  326. But look

  327. at my

  328. life.

  329. How do I

  330. reconcile my

  331. circumstances,

  332. my overwhelming

  333. darkness,

  334. with the fact

  335. that God is

  336. the God of

  337. my salvation?

  338. salvation.

  339. And it

  340. may be that

  341. he is simply

  342. living out as

  343. an old

  344. covenant

  345. echo the

  346. ultimate

  347. faithfulness of

  348. the faithful

  349. servant of

  350. the Lord,

  351. Jesus Christ

  352. himself.

  353. But we'll

  354. come to that

  355. in a short

  356. time.

  357. Let me make

  358. six observations

  359. very simply,

  360. very briefly.

  361. I know our

  362. time is hurrying

  363. on.

  364. Notice first of

  365. all that in

  366. his darkness,

  367. he prayed.

  368. His darkness

  369. did not drive

  370. him from

  371. God.

  372. It cast

  373. him upon

  374. God.

  375. O Lord,

  376. God of my

  377. salvation,

  378. I cry out

  379. day and

  380. night before

  381. you.

  382. Let my

  383. prayer come

  384. before you.

  385. Incline your

  386. ear to my

  387. cry.

  388. He has not

  389. turned his

  390. back on God,

  391. though it seems

  392. to him God

  393. has turned his

  394. back on him.

  395. He will

  396. not let

  397. God go.

  398. Life has

  399. become

  400. unrelieved

  401. darkness.

  402. What does

  403. he do?

  404. He lifts

  405. up his

  406. heart to

  407. the Lord.

  408. Secondly,

  409. notice that he

  410. prayed as a

  411. man of

  412. faith.

  413. His faith is

  414. battered,

  415. perhaps it's

  416. even broken,

  417. but it's

  418. functioning.

  419. I don't

  420. think there's

  421. any suggestion

  422. in the

  423. psalm that

  424. it was his

  425. sin that

  426. had brought

  427. these calamities

  428. upon his

  429. life.

  430. He's left

  431. with this

  432. conundrum.

  433. Why,

  434. O Lord,

  435. God,

  436. you're the

  437. God of

  438. my salvation.

  439. I cry

  440. out to

  441. you day

  442. and night

  443. and you

  444. can almost

  445. feel the

  446. perplexity.

  447. Why?

  448. I sometimes

  449. wonder that

  450. that elemental

  451. cry of our

  452. Savior from

  453. the cross,

  454. my God,

  455. my God,

  456. why have

  457. you forsaken

  458. me?

  459. That one of

  460. the implications

  461. of that cry

  462. is to tell

  463. us that

  464. even the

  465. holiest,

  466. purest,

  467. and sinless

  468. of men

  469. experienced

  470. a why

  471. that he

  472. could not

  473. resolve in

  474. his holy

  475. humanity.

  476. I don't

  477. know any

  478. of you

  479. meaningfully

  480. at all,

  481. and your

  482. circumstances

  483. may be very

  484. different from

  485. mine,

  486. but perhaps

  487. for some

  488. of you

  489. there is

  490. this

  491. recurring,

  492. Lord,

  493. why?

  494. Why this?

  495. Why now?

  496. Why?

  497. The Bible

  498. does not

  499. promise us

  500. that this

  501. side of

  502. glory,

  503. our whys,

  504. will be

  505. resolved.

  506. That's why

  507. the psalm

  508. ends,

  509. my only

  510. companion is

  511. darkness.

  512. There's no

  513. happy ending.

  514. Wouldn't it

  515. be lovely

  516. just to have

  517. happy endings

  518. all the time?

  519. I've often

  520. thought of

  521. late when

  522. I've been

  523. praying,

  524. saying,

  525. Lord,

  526. if it

  527. were left

  528. to me,

  529. I wouldn't

  530. have one

  531. difficulty,

  532. trial,

  533. or trouble

  534. touch my

  535. children or

  536. my

  537. grandchildren.

  538. I would

  539. want them

  540. to navigate

  541. this life

  542. safely and

  543. sweetly.

  544. The Lord,

  545. who is

  546. wiser,

  547. says,

  548. that will

  549. not be

  550. for their

  551. good,

  552. either for

  553. their present

  554. good or for

  555. their eternal

  556. good.

  557. And so

  558. we live

  559. by faith

  560. and not

  561. by sight.

  562. We're

  563. Christians

  564. not because

  565. we've got

  566. answers for

  567. everything.

  568. You want

  569. to avoid

  570. people like

  571. that who

  572. have got

  573. answers for

  574. everything.

  575. The older

  576. I get,

  577. the more

  578. ready and

  579. willing I

  580. am to

  581. say,

  582. I don't

  583. know.

  584. But let

  585. me tell

  586. you what

  587. I do

  588. know.

  589. Thirdly,

  590. do you

  591. notice he

  592. prayed every

  593. day?

  594. He says it

  595. in verse

  596. one.

  597. He says it

  598. again in

  599. verse

  600. nine.

  601. My eye

  602. grows dim

  603. through sorrow

  604. every day

  605. I call upon

  606. you,

  607. O Lord.

  608. I spread

  609. out my

  610. hands to

  611. you every

  612. day.

  613. Do you

  614. see what

  615. this man

  616. is saying?

  617. I've got

  618. no one

  619. else to

  620. go to.

  621. I've got

  622. no one

  623. else to

  624. turn to.

  625. I will

  626. not let

  627. you go.

  628. to whom

  629. else can

  630. I go?

  631. Every

  632. day I

  633. call upon

  634. you,

  635. Lord.

  636. You

  637. know,

  638. you meet

  639. people

  640. occasionally

  641. who say,

  642. but if

  643. only you

  644. had more

  645. faith,

  646. if only

  647. you prayed

  648. more,

  649. and,

  650. well,

  651. please God,

  652. I need

  653. my faith

  654. enriched and

  655. deepened,

  656. it's shallow

  657. and shameful.

  658. I need

  659. to be

  660. praying

  661. greatly

  662. more than

  663. I do.

  664. Sometimes

  665. we're left

  666. with this.

  667. Lord,

  668. I pray

  669. every day,

  670. every day,

  671. every waking

  672. moment,

  673. and nothing

  674. happens.

  675. Another new

  676. morning breaks

  677. and the

  678. darkness is

  679. there.

  680. But he

  681. won't let

  682. God go.

  683. That's one

  684. of the

  685. stellar,

  686. pristine

  687. marks of

  688. a man

  689. or woman

  690. of God.

  691. They

  692. will not

  693. let

  694. God

  695. go.

  696. And then

  697. fourthly,

  698. notice he

  699. recognizes that

  700. the Lord is

  701. the one

  702. ultimately

  703. behind everything

  704. that's happening

  705. to him.

  706. He knows

  707. that evil

  708. is not

  709. autonomous.

  710. Your wrath

  711. has swept

  712. over me.

  713. Your dreadful

  714. assaults

  715. destroy me.

  716. He

  717. understands

  718. that

  719. Satan

  720. can do

  721. nothing

  722. beyond

  723. God's

  724. holy,

  725. wise,

  726. good,

  727. and perfect

  728. will.

  729. He

  730. understands

  731. that he's

  732. a creature

  733. under the

  734. sovereign,

  735. overruling

  736. will,

  737. purpose,

  738. grace,

  739. mercy,

  740. and kindness

  741. of God.

  742. And he

  743. traces everything

  744. back to its

  745. origin.

  746. He knows

  747. that God

  748. uses sin

  749. sinlessly

  750. for his

  751. glory and

  752. for the

  753. good of

  754. his people.

  755. And he's

  756. saying,

  757. Lord,

  758. I know

  759. that my

  760. life is

  761. not at

  762. the mercy

  763. of mere

  764. circumstance.

  765. I know

  766. that my

  767. life is

  768. not at

  769. the mercy

  770. of mental

  771. turmoil

  772. or physical

  773. distress

  774. or of

  775. companions

  776. deserting

  777. me and

  778. rejecting me.

  779. I know

  780. that ultimately

  781. my times

  782. are in

  783. your hands,

  784. ways that

  785. you ordain

  786. the way

  787. that I

  788. have to

  789. take.

  790. Paul

  791. prayed,

  792. didn't he,

  793. a little

  794. earlier,

  795. your ways

  796. are not

  797. our ways.

  798. You know,

  799. I sometimes

  800. think we,

  801. those of us

  802. in the

  803. Reformed

  804. tradition,

  805. we placard

  806. very seriously

  807. the sovereignty

  808. of God.

  809. Do we

  810. really

  811. understand

  812. what we

  813. are placarding?

  814. The

  815. sovereignty

  816. of the

  817. God

  818. who

  819. sends

  820. in his

  821. wisdom

  822. pandemics?

  823. You know,

  824. I hear

  825. people praying

  826. and they

  827. say,

  828. oh God,

  829. this awful

  830. disease,

  831. it's as if

  832. God has

  833. been benign

  834. and passive

  835. and it's

  836. as if

  837. he is to

  838. now catch

  839. up with

  840. this

  841. unexpected

  842. happening.

  843. He ordains

  844. all that

  845. comes to

  846. pass,

  847. mysteriously,

  848. profoundly,

  849. unfathomably.

  850. You're left

  851. your head

  852. spinning.

  853. If your

  854. head doesn't

  855. spin,

  856. I sometimes

  857. think,

  858. can you

  859. really be

  860. a Christian?

  861. What kind

  862. of world

  863. are you

  864. living in?

  865. Our heads

  866. spin.

  867. We cannot

  868. begin to

  869. begin to

  870. begin to

  871. fathom the

  872. ways of

  873. the Almighty.

  874. That's why

  875. I love those

  876. words at the

  877. end of

  878. Romans 11.

  879. Where Paul

  880. having so

  881. gloriously,

  882. and you'll

  883. come to

  884. it in

  885. about five

  886. years'

  887. time,

  888. where Paul

  889. says he

  890. so wonderfully

  891. explained the

  892. gospel and

  893. you're swept

  894. along and

  895. then he

  896. ends and

  897. he says,

  898. oh the

  899. depths,

  900. both of the

  901. riches of

  902. the wisdom

  903. and knowledge

  904. of God,

  905. how unsearchable

  906. are his

  907. judgments.

  908. His paths

  909. are beyond

  910. tracing out.

  911. You see,

  912. when we

  913. preach the

  914. cross of

  915. Jesus Christ,

  916. we must

  917. never preach

  918. it as

  919. some kind

  920. of mathematical

  921. theorem.

  922. Here are

  923. all the

  924. parts,

  925. and when you

  926. put them

  927. all together,

  928. you see

  929. marvelous,

  930. propitiatory,

  931. sacrificial

  932. atonement.

  933. We should

  934. be so out

  935. of our

  936. depth,

  937. we hardly

  938. know what

  939. the next

  940. word is

  941. to speak.

  942. And we

  943. speak,

  944. Augustine was

  945. right,

  946. we speak so

  947. that we

  948. don't remain

  949. silent.

  950. You say,

  951. well God's

  952. given us

  953. his word.

  954. Absolutely

  955. he's given

  956. us his

  957. word.

  958. Absolutely

  959. true.

  960. God,

  961. but it

  962. takes us

  963. out of

  964. our

  965. depths.

  966. God,

  967. become

  968. man.

  969. I was

  970. sharing this

  971. with someone

  972. recently,

  973. I was

  974. ministering

  975. Cambridge,

  976. one of the

  977. girls who

  978. started attending

  979. church,

  980. she'd been

  981. brought along,

  982. she asked if

  983. she could

  984. meet with

  985. me for

  986. coffee,

  987. and I

  988. remember

  989. yet sitting

  990. with her

  991. in Starbucks,

  992. and I

  993. could see

  994. she was

  995. building up

  996. to something,

  997. and she's

  998. a bright

  999. girl,

  1000. and she

  1001. said,

  1002. can I

  1003. ask you

  1004. a question?

  1005. I said,

  1006. yeah,

  1007. you can

  1008. ask whatever

  1009. you like.

  1010. She says,

  1011. do you

  1012. believe in

  1013. Noah's

  1014. Ark?

  1015. And I

  1016. burst out

  1017. laughing,

  1018. and I

  1019. could see

  1020. she was a

  1021. little

  1022. disconcerted.

  1023. I said,

  1024. believe in

  1025. Noah's Ark.

  1026. I believe

  1027. the creator

  1028. of the

  1029. cosmos

  1030. became a

  1031. zygote in

  1032. a virgin's

  1033. womb.

  1034. You think

  1035. Noah's Ark's

  1036. a problem?

  1037. Of course I

  1038. believe in

  1039. Noah's Ark.

  1040. But the

  1041. gospel takes

  1042. us out of

  1043. all our

  1044. intellectual

  1045. categories and

  1046. canons.

  1047. Who has

  1048. known the

  1049. mind of

  1050. the Lord?

  1051. God

  1052. become man?

  1053. Jim

  1054. Packer was

  1055. right.

  1056. He says,

  1057. we simply

  1058. bow down

  1059. and worship

  1060. because we

  1061. don't know

  1062. how to

  1063. speculate.

  1064. And the

  1065. early church

  1066. was wonderful.

  1067. It got

  1068. some things

  1069. wrong,

  1070. but my,

  1071. it got

  1072. some things

  1073. right.

  1074. But when

  1075. it came

  1076. to

  1077. explicate

  1078. the union

  1079. in Jesus

  1080. Christ of

  1081. God and

  1082. man,

  1083. they just

  1084. used negative

  1085. adverbs.

  1086. They didn't

  1087. know how

  1088. to use

  1089. positive

  1090. adverbs

  1091. because they

  1092. couldn't

  1093. fathom the

  1094. inexplicableness,

  1095. so they simply

  1096. said it was

  1097. without confusion,

  1098. without division,

  1099. without separation,

  1100. without mixture.

  1101. life is

  1102. unfathomable

  1103. at times.

  1104. But here

  1105. is a man

  1106. who understands

  1107. that behind

  1108. all the

  1109. providences

  1110. that are

  1111. overwhelming

  1112. him,

  1113. it's the

  1114. Lord.

  1115. Like Psalm

  1116. 42 and

  1117. 43,

  1118. all your

  1119. waves and

  1120. breakers

  1121. have swept

  1122. over me.

  1123. just two

  1124. things to

  1125. go.

  1126. Number

  1127. five,

  1128. the Psalm

  1129. reminds us

  1130. that the

  1131. believing

  1132. life may

  1133. be marked

  1134. by

  1135. unrelieved

  1136. darkness.

  1137. You know

  1138. the verse

  1139. in Isaiah

  1140. 50,

  1141. let him

  1142. who walks

  1143. in the

  1144. dark and

  1145. who has

  1146. no light

  1147. trust in

  1148. his God.

  1149. God,

  1150. I'm sure

  1151. like me

  1152. there have

  1153. been periods

  1154. of darkness

  1155. in your

  1156. life.

  1157. I've never

  1158. known what

  1159. it is

  1160. to have

  1161. unrelieved

  1162. darkness.

  1163. I have a

  1164. friend who

  1165. once told

  1166. me he

  1167. envied the

  1168. lampposts

  1169. of Glasgow

  1170. because they

  1171. had light.

  1172. But in

  1173. Isaiah

  1174. 50,

  1175. let him

  1176. who walks

  1177. in the

  1178. darkness

  1179. and who

  1180. has no

  1181. light

  1182. yet

  1183. trust in

  1184. his God.

  1185. There's

  1186. much I

  1187. would like

  1188. to say

  1189. but I

  1190. know our

  1191. time has

  1192. gone.

  1193. You know

  1194. this is

  1195. one reason

  1196. why the

  1197. church needs

  1198. pastors and

  1199. elders who

  1200. are gentle

  1201. humble

  1202. physicians of

  1203. the soul,

  1204. who are

  1205. slow to

  1206. speak and

  1207. who are

  1208. quick to

  1209. listen,

  1210. who are

  1211. patient and

  1212. kind,

  1213. who don't

  1214. offer slick

  1215. answers to

  1216. people who

  1217. are walking

  1218. in darkness.

  1219. That's why

  1220. we need to

  1221. take the

  1222. greatest care

  1223. that the

  1224. men we

  1225. set apart

  1226. to shepherd

  1227. the flock

  1228. will shepherd

  1229. them with

  1230. gentleness,

  1231. tenderness,

  1232. thoughtfulness.

  1233. Yes, at

  1234. times with

  1235. clarity and

  1236. conviction but

  1237. most often

  1238. almost saying

  1239. nothing,

  1240. slow to

  1241. speak and

  1242. quick to

  1243. listen.

  1244. not giving

  1245. slick

  1246. answers and

  1247. maybe,

  1248. you know,

  1249. maybe the

  1250. best thing

  1251. you could

  1252. ever do

  1253. is simply

  1254. to sit

  1255. and weep

  1256. with those

  1257. who weep

  1258. and to

  1259. pray with

  1260. them and

  1261. to break

  1262. your heart

  1263. with their

  1264. breaking

  1265. hearts.

  1266. And they

  1267. look to

  1268. their pastors

  1269. and elders

  1270. and you

  1271. say,

  1272. I've got

  1273. nothing to

  1274. give you

  1275. except this.

  1276. The God

  1277. who spared

  1278. not his

  1279. only son

  1280. and who

  1281. delivered him

  1282. up for us

  1283. all is a

  1284. God we

  1285. can cast

  1286. ourselves upon

  1287. in our

  1288. extremity,

  1289. knowing that

  1290. one day he

  1291. will wipe

  1292. every tear

  1293. from our

  1294. eyes.

  1295. And he'll

  1296. make all

  1297. things new.

  1298. well,

  1299. one last

  1300. thing,

  1301. and I'm

  1302. sure you

  1303. would be

  1304. expecting

  1305. this.

  1306. In your

  1307. darkness,

  1308. whatever that

  1309. darkness may

  1310. be,

  1311. if you

  1312. were a

  1313. Christian

  1314. believer,

  1315. you have

  1316. a companion

  1317. who knows

  1318. what it is

  1319. to be

  1320. consumed

  1321. by darkness.

  1322. On the

  1323. cross,

  1324. all the

  1325. lights went

  1326. out for

  1327. Jesus Christ.

  1328. There wasn't

  1329. a pinprick

  1330. of light

  1331. in the

  1332. cosmos of

  1333. God's

  1334. creation for

  1335. the Son

  1336. of God.

  1337. All the

  1338. lights went

  1339. out.

  1340. He is

  1341. able to

  1342. help us,

  1343. not by

  1344. the wonder

  1345. of divine

  1346. omniscience

  1347. and divine

  1348. omnipotence,

  1349. which he

  1350. has,

  1351. but he

  1352. is able

  1353. especially

  1354. to help

  1355. us,

  1356. because he

  1357. knows our

  1358. frame,

  1359. because it

  1360. is his

  1361. own frame.

  1362. There is

  1363. dust on

  1364. the throne

  1365. of heaven,

  1366. and that

  1367. dust knows

  1368. darkness

  1369. personally.

  1370. It knows

  1371. darkness

  1372. intimately.

  1373. It knows

  1374. darkness that

  1375. no one of

  1376. his people

  1377. will ever,

  1378. ever,

  1379. in 10,000

  1380. times,

  1381. 10,000

  1382. years,

  1383. begin to

  1384. begin to

  1385. understand.

  1386. His

  1387. darkness

  1388. was a

  1389. diameter

  1390. removed

  1391. from all

  1392. our

  1393. darknesses.

  1394. And

  1395. because he

  1396. entered

  1397. into

  1398. darkness,

  1399. he is

  1400. able to

  1401. help

  1402. those

  1403. who are

  1404. going

  1405. through

  1406. darkness.

  1407. And

  1408. ultimately,

  1409. that's

  1410. the comfort

  1411. the gospel

  1412. gives.

  1413. You're

  1414. not alone.

  1415. you're

  1416. not alone.

  1417. He may

  1418. feel alone.

  1419. He may

  1420. feel that

  1421. darkness

  1422. was his

  1423. only

  1424. companion,

  1425. but

  1426. actually,

  1427. actually,

  1428. there was

  1429. one with

  1430. him who

  1431. was keeping

  1432. him from

  1433. apostatizing,

  1434. who was

  1435. keeping him

  1436. from turning

  1437. his back

  1438. on God

  1439. and blaspheming

  1440. him.

  1441. darkness

  1442. was not

  1443. his only

  1444. companion.

  1445. So let

  1446. me just

  1447. say to

  1448. you,

  1449. as I say

  1450. to myself

  1451. tonight,

  1452. however

  1453. dark your

  1454. days may

  1455. be,

  1456. number

  1457. one,

  1458. there is

  1459. one who

  1460. knows your

  1461. darkness

  1462. because he

  1463. has been

  1464. in your

  1465. darkness.

  1466. darkness.

  1467. And secondly,

  1468. there is
