  1. Well, thank you, Paul, for your kind welcome.

  2. It's a pleasure to be with you this morning.

  3. It was a delight to share in Gethin and Katie's wedding.

  4. !

  5. But God is rich in mercy and is long-suffering, and we're just delighted to share in the happy occasion.

  6. I'd like this morning to consider with you profound words that we read in verse 17 of John chapter 10.

    John 10 chapter mention

  7. For this reason, the Father loves me, because I lay down my life that I may take it up again.

  8. For this reason, the Father loves me.

  9. Augustine, the remarkable early church father, late 4th, early 5th century, preached through the Gospel of John,

  10. and he stated on one occasion,

  11. the Gospel of John is shallow enough for a child to paddle in and deep enough for an elephant to swim in.

  12. And when you read through the Gospel of John, you immediately understand what Augustine meant.

  13. You read beautifully crafted narratives that just sweep you along with their simplicity, their richness, their evocativeness.

  14. Think of Jesus' encounter with the woman in John chapter 8.

    John 8 chapter mention

  15. It's vivid, it's powerful, it's imaginative.

  16. And Augustine himself, as he comes to the conclusion of his exposition, says,

  17. there remained but two, misery and mercy.

  18. And all of the encounters that the Lord Jesus has are so simple at one level.

  19. They just sweep you along with their beautiful simplicity.

  20. And then also you have these remarkable egocentric statements of our Lord Jesus Christ.

  21. Jesus was uninhibitedly egocentric.

  22. I am the way, the truth, and the life.

  23. No one comes to the Father except by me.

  24. I am the light of the world.

  25. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.

  26. And so when you read through John's Gospel, you quickly discover that you can read this Gospel to your children in their almost infancy

  27. and confront them with the beauty, the simplicity, the richness of language that you find throughout John's Gospel.

  28. But then, of course, there are places in John where you find yourself utterly out of your depth.

  29. Think of the opening words of the Gospel, which really are the window through which we are to read the whole Gospel.

  30. John has written his Gospel, you remember, at the end of chapter 20,

  31. so that we might believe that Jesus is the Christ and that by believing we may have life in his name.

  32. The Gospel of John is an evangelistic tract, 15,635 words long, at least in the Greek text.

  33. And so from beginning to end, John is out not simply to inform us, but to persuade us.

  34. And right at the outset, he confronts us with profundity that takes us totally out of all our comfort zones.

  35. In the beginning was the Word.

  36. The Word was with God.

  37. The Word was God.

  38. He was in the beginning with God.

  39. And John deliberately, right at the outset of his Gospel, confronts us with profundity.

  40. Almost to make us gasp.

  41. And to leave us wondering, who is this Jesus?

  42. And so Augustine really, I think, is profoundly right when he says,

  43. the Gospel is shallow enough for children to paddle in,

  44. but it's deep enough for elephants to swim in.

  45. And it's this out-of-our-depth passage in verse 17 in particular

  46. that I want to reflect on with you this morning.

  47. For this reason, the Father loves me

  48. because I lay down my life that I may take it up again.

  49. Now, from times eternal, the Son of God was the adoring object of his Father's love.

  50. Think of how the Lord God Almighty punctuates history on three occasions

  51. to declare, this is my beloved Son.

  52. There was never a time when the Son was not beheld in love by his Father.

  53. The Holy Trinity is a communion of love.

  54. God is love.

  55. God is not a solitary monad as in Islam.

  56. He is a communion, a community, a fellowship, a triad of love.

  57. And from times eternal, the Father beheld the Son

  58. with a love that had no beginning and that had no ending.

  59. This is Christianity 101.

  60. It's so basic, isn't it?

  61. It's where we begin our thinking about the gospel of God.

  62. Now read verse 17.

  63. For this reason the Father loves me,

  64. because I lay down my life that I may take it up again.

  65. I've often pondered these words.

  66. I remember, I can't remember when it was,

  67. it must be many, many, many, many, many years ago now

  68. that I first read them,

  69. and was arrested immediately by them.

  70. For this reason the Father loves me?

  71. But surely you were loved, Lord Jesus,

  72. as the Son of the Father from times eternal.

  73. What do you mean,

  74. for this reason the Father loves you?

  75. How are we to understand Jesus' words here?

  76. Well, very simply in this way,

  77. that God the Father's love for his Son

  78. is multi-dimensional, multifaceted.

  79. First of all, as I've already said,

  80. there is his love of eternal complacency,

  81. his love of sheer delight

  82. in who his Son is.

  83. The Son is autotheos.

  84. He is God in himself.

  85. He doesn't owe his Godhead to the Father,

  86. but he is the Son of the Father.

  87. And as the Father beheld his equal,

  88. but the Son,

  89. who eternally was begotten of him,

  90. he ever beheld him in love.

  91. The Son needed to do nothing

  92. to merit the love of his Father.

  93. By virtue of who he is,

  94. the heart of the Father,

  95. if I can use such language,

  96. the heart of the Father

  97. was ever traveling to his Son.

  98. Beholding the Son

  99. was the Father's delight in eternity.

  100. If you like,

  101. this is the love of withness

  102. that John has hinted at

  103. right at the beginning of his Gospel.

  104. In the beginning was the Word.

  105. The Word was with God.

  106. Literally, almost,

  107. the Word was face to face with God.

  108. And the Word was God.

  109. There was an eternal withness

  110. to the relationship of the Father

  111. and of the Son.

  112. And so there is, first of all,

  113. then, this love of eternal complacency.

  114. But secondly,

  115. and it's this that Jesus

  116. is speaking about here,

  117. there is the Father's love

  118. of responsive admiration.

  119. He loved the Son

  120. from times eternal

  121. by virtue of who he is.

  122. But here,

  123. there is a new dimension unfolding

  124. in the Father's love to the Son.

  125. The love of responsive admiration.

  126. Because Jesus here is speaking

  127. in his anointed

  128. and appointed capacity

  129. as the mediator,

  130. the redeemer of God's elect.

  131. He is here in his holy humanity,

  132. giving to the Father

  133. that obedience that he had pledged to him

  134. in times eternal

  135. in the covenant of redemption.

  136. Here I am.

  137. I delight to do your will,

  138. O God,

  139. as we find it in the 40th Psalm.

  140. He has come into the world

  141. in obedience to his Father.

  142. And that obedience that he pledged

  143. in times eternal

  144. was an obedience that would take him

  145. from glory to Golgotha.

  146. Now, you must not think

  147. that in times eternal,

  148. the Son of God

  149. understood

  150. what it would mean for him

  151. to become flesh

  152. and take that holy humanity

  153. to the cross of Calvary.

  154. that's why in the Garden of Gethsemane,

  155. as the horror

  156. of what awaited him

  157. approached him inexorably,

  158. and as his human soul

  159. began to taste

  160. what it would mean for him

  161. to be obedient unto death,

  162. he shrank back.

  163. Father,

  164. if it is possible,

  165. take this cup

  166. from me,

  167. but not my will,

  168. but yours

  169. be done.

  170. Here he stands

  171. in his holy,

  172. fragile,

  173. frail

  174. humanity,

  175. and he is standing

  176. as the one

  177. who is pledged

  178. in love to the Father

  179. to be obedient

  180. unto death,

  181. a death

  182. that would be

  183. for him

  184. the death

  185. of a sinner.

  186. He himself

  187. in himself,

  188. holy,

  189. harmless,

  190. undefiled,

  191. separate from sinners,

  192. but in our place

  193. he would stand

  194. cursed and condemned.

  195. he would bear

  196. the wrath of God,

  197. the righteous

  198. wrath of God

  199. that our sin

  200. deserved.

  201. And as the Father

  202. watches the obedience

  203. of his Son,

  204. the Son that he loved

  205. from times

  206. eternal,

  207. a new

  208. love

  209. bursts

  210. forth

  211. from God

  212. the Father.

  213. the love

  214. of a Father's

  215. admiration

  216. for an obedient,

  217. loving

  218. Son.

  219. And this is what

  220. Jesus

  221. is speaking about

  222. here.

  223. For this reason

  224. the Father

  225. loves me

  226. in my capacity,

  227. in my ordained,

  228. anointed capacity

  229. as the Redeemer

  230. of God's elect,

  231. as the one

  232. who had come

  233. into the world

  234. to be the Savior

  235. of the world.

  236. who would die

  237. the just

  238. for the unjust

  239. to reconcile

  240. sinners to God.

  241. In that capacity,

  242. new love

  243. bursts

  244. forth

  245. from heaven.

  246. Now perhaps

  247. you're thinking

  248. as you listen

  249. this morning,

  250. well Ian,

  251. how then

  252. are we

  253. to understand

  254. the deafening

  255. silence

  256. of heaven

  257. as the Lord

  258. Jesus Christ

  259. hung

  260. on Calvary's

  261. cross?

  262. My God,

  263. my God,

  264. why

  265. have you

  266. forsaken me?

  267. And he

  268. was truly

  269. forsaken me.

  270. He wasn't

  271. imagining

  272. being forsaken.

  273. He said,

  274. why have you

  275. forsaken me?

  276. He was

  277. forsaken

  278. of God

  279. as he

  280. became

  281. our sin

  282. atoning,

  283. wrath

  284. quenching

  285. sacrifice

  286. in our

  287. place

  288. on Calvary's

  289. cross.

  290. How are we

  291. to understand

  292. the deafening

  293. silence?

  294. Certainly

  295. he was

  296. forsaken.

  297. but not

  298. for

  299. one

  300. moment

  301. was he

  302. unloved.

  303. I'm

  304. persuaded

  305. that the

  306. father's

  307. love

  308. for his

  309. son,

  310. his love

  311. of responsive

  312. admiration

  313. for his

  314. son,

  315. reached its

  316. omega point,

  317. its highest

  318. point.

  319. As he

  320. forsook

  321. his son

  322. on Calvary's

  323. cross.

  324. I remember

  325. yet some

  326. years ago

  327. now a good

  328. friend of

  329. mine

  330. preaching

  331. and he

  332. said,

  333. even as

  334. the father

  335. was laying

  336. upon him

  337. the iniquity

  338. of us all,

  339. he was

  340. saying,

  341. if ever I

  342. loved thee,

  343. my Jesus,

  344. tis now.

  345. as the

  346. father

  347. beholds the

  348. son,

  349. as our

  350. appointed

  351. representative,

  352. about to

  353. be offered

  354. up

  355. as an

  356. atoning

  357. sacrifice

  358. for sin,

  359. the love

  360. of responsive

  361. admiration

  362. bursts forth

  363. from heaven.

  364. Now,

  365. what I

  366. really want

  367. to focus

  368. on with

  369. you this

  370. morning,

  371. with that

  372. as the

  373. prelude,

  374. is to

  375. make this

  376. profound

  377. point,

  378. I think,

  379. that this

  380. pattern of

  381. eternal love

  382. and responsive

  383. admiring

  384. love

  385. is reflected

  386. in the

  387. love that

  388. the Lord

  389. Jesus

  390. has for

  391. his people.

  392. If you

  393. turn over

  394. to John

    John 15 chapter mention

  395. chapter 15,

  396. you'll see

  397. the point,

  398. I hope.

  399. John 15

  400. at verse

  401. 9.

  402. As the

  403. father has

  404. loved me,

  405. so have

  406. I loved

  407. you,

  408. abide

  409. in my

  410. love.

  411. If you

  412. keep my

  413. commandments,

  414. you will

  415. abide in

  416. my love,

  417. just as I

  418. have kept

  419. my father's

  420. commandments,

  421. and abide

  422. in his

  423. love.

  424. Just as

  425. the father's

  426. love for

  427. his son

  428. is

  429. multidimensional,

  430. so the

  431. son's

  432. love for

  433. his people

  434. is

  435. multidimensional.

  436. We have

  437. been loved

  438. in Christ

  439. from times

  440. eternal.

  441. Gerhardus

  442. Voss,

  443. the

  444. remarkable

  445. Dutch

  446. biblical

  447. theologian,

  448. put it

  449. astonishing

  450. when he

  451. said,

  452. the reason

  453. God will

  454. never stop

  455. loving you

  456. is because

  457. he never

  458. began

  459. to love

  460. you.

  461. I have

  462. loved you,

  463. Jeremiah 31,

  464. with an

  465. everlasting

  466. love.

  467. He has

  468. loved us

  469. with a

  470. love that

  471. is no

  472. beginning

  473. and that

  474. has no

  475. ending.

  476. And the

  477. reason he

  478. will never

  479. stop loving

  480. his people

  481. is because

  482. he never

  483. began to

  484. love them.

  485. electing

  486. gracious,

  487. sure,

  488. certain,

  489. unchanging

  490. love.

  491. But,

  492. along with

  493. this

  494. unchanging

  495. love,

  496. there is

  497. a love

  498. of responsive

  499. admiration.

  500. Jesus

  501. says,

  502. we will

  503. abide in

  504. his love

  505. if you

  506. keep my

  507. commandments,

  508. just as I

  509. have kept

  510. my father's

  511. commandments

  512. and abide

  513. in his

  514. love.

  515. If Jesus

  516. had deviated

  517. one iota

  518. from his

  519. pledged

  520. obedience to

  521. the father,

  522. he would

  523. have forfeited

  524. the father's

  525. love of

  526. responsive

  527. admiration.

  528. That's what

  529. he says.

  530. If you

  531. keep my

  532. commandments,

  533. just as I

  534. have kept

  535. my father's

  536. commandments,

  537. and abide

  538. in his

  539. love.

  540. Now,

  541. here is the

  542. point I

  543. really want

  544. to leave

  545. with you

  546. and with

  547. myself this

  548. morning.

  549. The Lord

  550. Jesus never

  551. stops loving

  552. his people

  553. in our

  554. weakness,

  555. in our

  556. fragility,

  557. in our

  558. failures.

  559. He never

  560. stops loving

  561. us.

  562. We are

  563. bone of

  564. his bone

  565. and flesh

  566. of his

  567. flesh.

  568. We have

  569. been united

  570. to him

  571. indissolubly

  572. by the

  573. Holy Spirit.

  574. He will

  575. never

  576. stop

  577. loving

  578. us.

  579. But,

  580. his love

  581. can be

  582. grieved

  583. by our

  584. sin.

  585. His love

  586. can be

  587. grieved.

  588. I can

  589. never read

  590. what Paul

  591. writes in

  592. Ephesians 4

  593. about grieving

  594. the Holy

  595. Spirit without

  596. stopping and

  597. pausing and

  598. thinking,

  599. Lord,

  600. does someone

  601. like me,

  602. a worm of

  603. the earth?

  604. Am I

  605. able to

  606. grieve

  607. God?

  608. Am I

  609. able to

  610. disappoint you

  611. and grieve

  612. you,

  613. the unchanging,

  614. unchangeable,

  615. triune God

  616. who is from

  617. everlasting to

  618. everlasting?

  619. Yes,

  620. the Bible

  621. tells me

  622. so.

  623. Philosophically,

  624. you might

  625. say,

  626. ah,

  627. but Ian,

  628. Ian,

  629. Ian,

  630. God is

  631. impassable.

  632. who would

  633. deny it?

  634. I am the

  635. Lord,

  636. I change

  637. not.

  638. That I

  639. read in

  640. his word,

  641. I can

  642. grieve

  643. his spirit.

  644. In all

  645. our afflictions,

  646. the Bible

  647. tells me he

  648. is afflicted.

  649. I would

  650. rather live

  651. by the

  652. text of

  653. Holy

  654. Scripture

  655. than by

  656. the

  657. logical,

  658. philosophical

  659. teachings of

  660. Thomas Aquinas.

  661. There's a

  662. mystery here,

  663. there's a

  664. profundity here,

  665. but we are

  666. to live on

  667. the basis

  668. of the

  669. revealed

  670. word of

  671. God.

  672. God can

  673. be grieved

  674. by our

  675. sin,

  676. and in

  677. the same

  678. way,

  679. his love

  680. can be

  681. heightened

  682. by our

  683. loving,

  684. wholehearted

  685. obedience.

  686. as the

  687. Father has

  688. loved me,

  689. so have

  690. I loved

  691. you.

  692. Notice the

  693. parallelism,

  694. abide in

  695. my love,

  696. and if you

  697. keep my

  698. commandments,

  699. you will

  700. abide in

  701. my love.

  702. This is all

  703. simply to say

  704. this, if you

  705. take anything

  706. away with you

  707. this morning,

  708. take this

  709. away with

  710. you.

  711. Our

  712. Savior

  713. takes a

  714. special

  715. delight

  716. in his

  717. people's

  718. loving

  719. obedience.

  720. Now,

  721. obedience in

  722. no way

  723. contributes to

  724. our salvation,

  725. we know

  726. that.

  727. It is all

  728. of grace,

  729. from beginning

  730. to end.

  731. As Paul

  732. prayed,

  733. even the

  734. faith with

  735. which we

  736. believe,

  737. that even

  738. that trembling

  739. faith is

  740. itself the

  741. very gift

  742. of God's

  743. grace.

  744. obedience

  745. contributes

  746. nothing to

  747. our standing

  748. before God,

  749. but your

  750. heart

  751. obedience can

  752. delight your

  753. God.

  754. And so the

  755. question I

  756. really want to

  757. ask this

  758. morning is

  759. very simple.

  760. Do you

  761. not want to

  762. delight the

  763. Lord?

  764. Do you

  765. not want to

  766. please him?

  767. Do you

  768. not want to

  769. show in

  770. your life

  771. that he

  772. is your

  773. greatest

  774. good?

  775. That he

  776. is the

  777. king before

  778. whom you

  779. bow,

  780. the savior

  781. whom you

  782. embrace?

  783. Do you

  784. not want to

  785. delight him

  786. and please

  787. him?

  788. for this

  789. reason the

  790. father loves

  791. me?

  792. Because I

  793. lay down

  794. in obedience

  795. to him

  796. my life

  797. for my

  798. sheep.

  799. Loving

  800. obedience

  801. is the

  802. new

  803. lifestyle

  804. of the

  805. Christian

  806. believer.

  807. It is the

  808. new lifestyle

  809. that every

  810. Christian

  811. believer

  812. is brought

  813. into

  814. through the

  815. gospel.

  816. And do you

  817. know why?

  818. I'm sure

  819. already you

  820. anticipate my

  821. next statement.

  822. Because what

  823. does the

  824. gospel do?

  825. It unites

  826. us to the

  827. Lord Jesus

  828. Christ.

  829. And who

  830. is this

  831. Lord Jesus

  832. Christ to

  833. whom we

  834. have been

  835. united as

  836. branches to

  837. the vine?

  838. He is the

  839. obedient,

  840. loving son

  841. of the

  842. father.

  843. And the

  844. obedient,

  845. loving nature

  846. of the

  847. God

  848. man

  849. flows

  850. by the

  851. ministry of

  852. the spirit

  853. into our

  854. lives.

  855. And we

  856. are being

  857. changed from

  858. one degree

  859. of glory

  860. to another.

  861. And what

  862. are these

  863. degrees of

  864. glory?

  865. They are

  866. degrees of

  867. loving

  868. obedience

  869. to the

  870. holy will

  871. of the

  872. father

  873. revealed

  874. in his

  875. word.

  876. There's a

  877. wonderful

  878. statement

  879. Paul makes

  880. in Romans

  881. 6.

  882. You'll

  883. come to

  884. it.

  885. We've

  886. been

  887. following

  888. a little

  889. these

  890. services,

  891. Joan and

  892. I, and

  893. just love

  894. being with

  895. you on a

  896. number of

  897. occasions

  898. through Romans.

  899. You'll

  900. come to

  901. Romans 6,

  902. 17, where

  903. Paul uses

  904. very striking

  905. language.

  906. He says

  907. that through

  908. the gospel

  909. we have

  910. been poured

  911. into a

  912. mold.

  913. And that

  914. mold is the

  915. person of

  916. the Son of

  917. God.

  918. It's not a

  919. doctrinal

  920. mold.

  921. Well, it is a

  922. doctrinal mold,

  923. but the

  924. doctrine is

  925. embedded in

  926. the person

  927. of the

  928. Son.

  929. You never

  930. separate the

  931. doctrines of

  932. the gospel

  933. from the

  934. one who

  935. is himself

  936. the doctrine

  937. of the

  938. gospel,

  939. Jesus

  940. Christ.

  941. And Paul

  942. says the

  943. gospel comes

  944. and it

  945. pours us

  946. idiosyncratically.

  947. We don't

  948. all become

  949. clones of

  950. one another.

  951. We are

  952. to become

  953. clones of

  954. the God

  955. man,

  956. Jesus

  957. Christ,

  958. in our

  959. own

  960. idiosyncratic

  961. humanity.

  962. And as

  963. we seek

  964. to live

  965. out our

  966. lives of

  967. loving

  968. obedience,

  969. bursts

  970. of

  971. responsive,

  972. admiring

  973. love

  974. comes from

  975. heaven.

  976. God

  977. that

  978. only

  979. does

  980. the

  981. father

  982. say

  983. this

  984. is

  985. my

  986. beloved

  987. son.

  988. Do

  989. you

  990. see

  991. the

  992. loving

  993. obedience

  994. that he

  995. is

  996. giving

  997. me

  998. even

  999. unto

  1000. the

  1001. death

  1002. of a

  1003. cross

  1004. that he

  1005. cannot

  1006. yet

  1007. mentally,

  1008. emotively,

  1009. spiritually

  1010. comprehend?

1011. end. Take that to ourselves. I've little doubt. Remember with Job, God says to Satan,

1012. behold my servant Job. Would you not want the father to be saying to the angelic hosts

1013. this morning, behold that daughter of mine, do you see? The loving obedience that she

1014. unreservedly gives to me. Do you see that devoted little boy, girl who is seeking in the simplicity

1015. of their union with Christ to please me? We've been loved with an everlasting love.

1016. It has no beginning, it will have no end, but embedded within that there are bursts

1017. of heavenly admiration. I think it's one of the hallmarks of the new birth.

1018. How do I know I've been born again? Because, you know, some of your mothers, some births are dramatic,

1019. not so many actually, most, well what do I know? But I've had four, I've watched four births. One was

1020. pretty dramatic and the other three just happened to appear. Well don't ask Joan that, but they can

1021. have happened to appear. And you say, well how do I know I've been born again? Well let me simply ask

1022. you. In your heart of hearts, do you long to please the Lord?

1023. Lord, I've been tempted to live a life that will bring forth from him bursts of loving admiration.

1024. The reason the Father loves me, who had loved me from times eternal, but the reason he now loves me

1025. is that I lay down my life for my sheep. Loving, unreserved obedience brings forth bursts

  1026. of heavenly admiration.
