  1. Well, it really is great to be with you. Thank you for the warm welcome. And thank you very much for your prayers for us in Chester. We really do appreciate you praying for us.

  2. We're looking at this passage that Paul read for us in Luke chapter 18. And do turn back there if you've got a Bible with you, Luke 18, and the Church Bibles, that's page 877.

    Luke 18 chapter mention

  3. I don't know whether you might follow professional boxing at all. It's an interesting time in professional boxing in the heavyweight division. There's the American fighter Deontay Wilder, who's got an incredible right hook, right punch.

  4. There's Tyson Fury, who I'm sure you've heard of, even if you're not interested in boxing. And no matter what your assessment of him, everybody agrees he's an incredibly talented boxer.

  5. And then you've got Anthony Joshua, who won gold at the Olympics in 2012 before he became professional. Everybody loves Anthony Joshua.

  6. But a couple of years ago, he was fighting what everybody thought was going to be a fairly routine fight. There was no big hype before it. It wasn't a big box office fight.

  7. He was fighting a Mexican boxer called Andy Ruiz Jr. And everybody thought Joshua would win. It wasn't really any question about it before the fight, but he went on to lose.

  8. And with it, he lost his undefeated records. And it was interesting reading and listening to the pundits and the analysts as they wrote and spoke about the fight after it had happened and gave their reasons why Joshua might have lost this fight.

  9. There were some people who were saying, well, something must have gone wrong in Joshua's camp in the week before the fight.

  10. There were some reports that he'd been knocked out in training, so he wasn't really fit for the fight.

  11. There were some people who had always doubted Joshua's boxing ability, and they were using the opportunity to say, we told you so.

  12. Joshua really isn't that great of a boxer.

  13. But there were some people who were analyzing the last round before the fight ended.

  14. And they were watching Joshua.

  15. And he wasn't knocked out.

  16. The ref didn't have to step in and stop the fight.

  17. He just walked back to his corner quietly, and his corner threw the towel in.

  18. And people were analyzing this, and they were saying, it seems like Joshua just gave up.

  19. He didn't have the stomach for it.

  20. Well, we don't know for Joshua whether the issue really was that he gave up.

  21. But we're looking at a parable this morning in Luke 18, in which giving up very much is the issue.

  22. Luke tells us that in verse 1.

  23. It says, and Jesus told them, that's the disciples, a parable, to the effect that they ought always to pray and not lose heart, not give up.

  24. And so here is a parable Jesus told for his disciples, not for the Pharisees, not for onlookers.

  25. It's for the disciples, and its purpose is to encourage the disciples not to give up.

  26. Luke tells us that explicitly in verse 1, but we also see it in the parable itself.

  27. This parable, it's become known in the parable as the parable of the persistent widow.

  28. Jesus describes in this parable a widow who does not give up in her petition for justice.

  29. So here is a parable designed by Jesus to encourage Christians, his followers, not to give up.

  30. Now, before we get into the detail of the text, it's worth, at this point, just pausing to acknowledge

  31. that Jesus here knows that his followers will, at times, feel like quietly walking back to their corner

  32. and throwing the towel in.

  33. Why else would he carefully design a parable that would have the effect of encouraging his followers

  34. not to give up?

  35. In fact, the temptation to give up is acknowledged to be a very real temptation for Jesus' followers

  36. all the way through the New Testament.

  37. Twice in 2 Corinthians 4, Paul says that because of the great hope that we have in the gospel

  38. and because of the mercy of God, we do not lose heart.

  39. Why would he write that unless there is a very real temptation, a very real danger that we might

  40. lose heart?

  41. Lose heart.

  42. He writes, Paul writes to the Ephesians in chapter 3, verse 13.

  43. So I ask you not to lose heart over what I am suffering for you, which is your glory.

  44. Hebrews 12, 3 says,

  45. Consider him who endured such opposition from sinners so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.

  46. And so again and again, the writers of the New Testament refuse to hide the fact that as followers of the Lord Jesus Christ,

  47. we will at times feel like losing heart.

  48. Giving up.

  49. Some of you don't need much convincing of that this morning.

  50. You've been there.

  51. You've wanted to give up.

  52. You've weighed it all up.

  53. You've wondered whether it's all worth it.

  54. But here in this parable in Luke 18, as Jesus acknowledges this reality,

  55. he doesn't respond in a number of ways that he might have responded in.

  56. He doesn't respond, for instance, with a heavy hand.

  57. He doesn't say to his disciples,

  58. If you find yourselves at a time and you want to give up,

  59. then you've failed me.

  60. And I don't want to know about it.

  61. He doesn't respond with indifference.

  62. He doesn't shrug his shoulders and say something like,

  63. If you feel like giving up, then what's it got to do with me?

  64. I've done my part of the deal.

  65. No.

  66. He knows that his disciples are going to find themselves at times where they want to give up,

  67. and it matters.

  68. It matters so much to him

  69. that he wants to equip his disciples with the resources to persevere

  70. and to overcome the temptation to give up.

  71. He told them a parable to the effect that they ought always to pray

  72. and not lose heart.

  73. And so the main point of this parable, then, is to answer the question,

  74. What will keep us from giving up?

  75. But before it answers that question, it answers two other questions.

  76. Firstly, what does it mean to give up?

  77. And secondly, what might cause us to want to give up?

  78. So first of all, what does it mean to give up?

  79. Well, there are two things in the text that help us to answer this question.

  80. The first is in the context of this parable.

  81. Immediately before Jesus tells this parable to his disciples,

  82. Luke gives us a record of something else Jesus told his disciples.

  83. The subject there is Jesus' return.

  84. And so look down at chapter 17, if you've got a Bible open, verse 22.

  85. And he said to the disciples,

  86. The days are coming when you will desire to see one of the days of the Son of Man,

  87. and you will not see it.

  88. And they will say to you,

  89. Look there, or look here.

  90. Do not go out or follow them.

  91. For as the lightning flashes and lights up the sky from one side to the other,

  92. so will the Son of Man be in his day.

  93. But first he must suffer many things and be rejected by this generation.

  94. So Jesus is talking there about the day of the Son of Man.

  95. The Son of Man in his day will be like the lightning, he says.

  96. And this day that he's referring to isn't the day of his crucifixion,

  97. because he goes on to say,

  98. But first he must suffer many things and be rejected by this generation.

  99. And when he says that, it's clear there that he's talking about his crucifixion.

  100. And that is something which is going to happen before this day of the Son of Man that he's talking about.

  101. And so the day that he's referring to is the day of his return.

  102. The day we sometimes refer to as the second coming.

  103. Which this world is still waiting for.

  104. The rest of chapter 17 makes it clear that he's talking about his return.

  105. And then in the last line of this parable that we read,

  106. this passage in Luke 18 in verse 8,

  107. He says,

  108. However, when the Son of Man comes,

  109. will he find faith on earth?

  110. As Jesus' followers, we live out our short lives

  111. in between Jesus' two great comings.

  112. On the one hand, his incarnation, his becoming man,

  113. his death, his resurrection, his ascension.

  114. On the other hand, his promised glorious return.

  115. And so we live in light of his first coming

  116. and we live in anticipation of his second coming.

  117. And Jesus is acknowledging here that in between,

  118. as we live out our lives,

  119. there are going to be times where we want to give up.

  120. And so we see how the context helps us to answer this question.

  121. What does it mean to give up?

  122. When Luke writes that Jesus told this parable

  123. so that his disciples might not lose heart,

  124. he's not referring to Jesus' disciples

  125. losing heart in their efforts towards certain tasks

  126. or certain endeavors.

  127. He's not saying that Jesus told this parable

  128. so that Christians might always keep their word

  129. and follow through on their resolutions

  130. and not lose heart with them.

  131. As good a thing as that might be.

  132. Now the context helps us to see

  133. Jesus told this parable

  134. so that his disciples might not lose heart

  135. on a bigger scale.

  136. So that they might not give up before Jesus returns.

  137. So that they might not stop trusting in him.

  138. So that when he returns,

  139. he might find faith on earth.

  140. That's the context.

  141. The second thing that helps us understand

  142. what it means to give up

  143. is found in what Luke writes in verse 1.

  144. Luke tells us that Jesus wanted his parable

  145. to have this effect on his disciples,

  146. that they ought always to pray

  147. and not lose heart.

  148. And do you see how closely there

  149. losing heart is connected with prayer?

  150. That's interesting.

  151. And what Luke is doing here in his explanation,

  152. what Jesus does in his parable,

  153. which he implies in his parable,

  154. is that prayer and not losing heart

  155. go hand in hand.

  156. They belong together.

  157. Prayer and not giving up

  158. are two sides of the same coin.

  159. One can't exist without the other.

  160. To pray is to not give up.

  161. To give up

  162. is to stop praying.

  163. That means that according to the teaching of the Bible,

  164. to give up as a Christian

  165. is not firstly

  166. to backslide into some huge moral failure.

  167. To give up as a Christian

  168. is not fundamentally

  169. to stop attending church

  170. and to start cutting out

  171. all your Christian friends

  172. from your life.

  173. To give up as a Christian

  174. is to stop praying.

  175. He told them a parable

  176. to the effect that they ought always to pray

  177. and not lose heart.

  178. Is that how you view

  179. what it is to give up

  180. as a Christian?

  181. When you hear

  182. of a professing Christian

  183. making a mess of their life,

  184. do you look

  185. at their moral failures

  186. and think to yourself,

  187. well, it's clear

  188. that that person

  189. has given up on their faith.

  190. And when a friend

  191. who professes to be a Christian

  192. starts to pull away from church

  193. to cut out their Christian friends

  194. from their life,

  195. do you look at their withdrawal

  196. and think to yourself,

  197. well, it's clear

  198. that that person

  199. has given up on their faith.

  200. Well, in a sense,

  201. that might be true,

  202. but what brought them

  203. to that point,

  204. what caused them

  205. to walk away,

  206. seemingly,

  207. from the faith they professed,

  208. one answer the Bible gives

  209. is that they stopped praying.

  210. And that's a sobering thought

  211. for us, isn't it?

  212. It causes us to reflect

  213. on our own praying.

  214. Have I stopped praying?

  215. I mean, I pray

  216. when I come

  217. to the church service.

  218. I pray

  219. when I'm in a desperate situation.

  220. Do I really pray?

  221. And if we're going to know

  222. whether we really pray,

  223. then we need to know

  224. how the Bible

  225. defines real prayer.

  226. And it's interesting,

  227. we didn't read it,

  228. but the very next parable

  229. after the one

  230. we're looking at today,

  231. Luke records

  232. Jesus' teaching

  233. on prayer.

  234. So we can read it

  235. from verse 9.

  236. He also told this parable

  237. to some who trusted

  238. in themselves,

  239. that they were righteous

  240. and treated others

  241. with contempt.

  242. Two men went up

  243. to the temple

  244. to pray,

  245. one a Pharisee

  246. and the other

  247. a tax collector.

  248. The Pharisee,

  249. standing by himself,

  250. prayed thus,

  251. God, I thank you

  252. that I'm not like other men,

  253. extortioners,

  254. unjust, adulterers,

  255. or even like this,

  256. tax collector.

  257. I fast twice a week,

  258. I give tithes

  259. of all that I get,

  260. but the tax collector,

  261. standing far off,

  262. would not even lift

  263. his eyes to heaven,

  264. but beat his breast,

  265. saying,

  266. God, be merciful to me,

  267. a sinner.

  268. I tell you,

  269. this man went down

  270. to his house justified

  271. rather than the other,

  272. for everyone who exalts

  273. himself will be humbled,

  274. but the one who humbles

  275. himself will be exalted.

  276. See, the prayer

  277. that Jesus holds up there

  278. as an example

  279. of real prayer

  280. is the prayer

  281. of the tax collector.

  282. God, have mercy on me,

  283. a sinner.

  284. And we can break it down

  285. a little bit.

  286. What do we find

  287. in that prayer?

  288. What we find in that prayer

  289. is a simple expression

  290. of total dependence

  291. on God,

  292. exalting God,

  293. and humbling himself.

  294. And that

  295. is what prayer is.

  296. A prayer is expressing

  297. to God how totally

  298. dependent we are

  299. on him

  300. with God

  301. at the center

  302. of our prayer.

  303. God is the focus

  304. of our prayer,

  305. viewing ourselves

  306. in light of who

  307. he is.

  308. We could say

  309. so much more

  310. about prayer,

  311. but in one sense,

  312. there's no need

  313. to complicate prayer

  314. any more than that.

  315. when the disciples

  316. asked Jesus

  317. to teach them

  318. to pray

  319. in Luke 11,

  320. we've prayed it

  321. already in the service,

  322. but when they asked him

  323. to teach them

  324. to pray,

  325. Jesus didn't enroll them

  326. on a 10-week course

  327. in how to pray.

  328. He simply

  329. instructed them

  330. and he gave them

  331. the Lord's Prayer,

  332. Father,

  333. hallowed be your name,

  334. and so on.

  335. And that was it.

  336. A simple expression

  337. of our dependence

  338. on God

  339. with God

  340. at the center,

  341. viewing ourselves

  342. in light of who

  343. he is.

  344. And so as we come

  345. face to face

  346. this morning

  347. with this sobering

  348. reality

  349. that to stop praying

  350. is to give up

  351. as a Christian,

  352. this is what we're

  353. talking about

  354. when we talk about

  355. prayer.

  356. Do you know,

  357. I think sometimes

  358. we're guilty

  359. of defining real prayer

  360. as something more

  361. than this.

  362. Real prayer,

  363. we think,

  364. is full of

  365. passionate pleas

  366. and heartfelt

  367. cries.

  368. Real prayer

  369. lasts for a long

  370. time.

  371. It's full of

  372. intense experience,

  373. we think.

  374. And perhaps

  375. sometimes

  376. prayer is like

  377. that and that's

  378. a great thing,

  379. but it's not

  380. to say

  381. that simple

  382. daily praying,

  383. even for just

  384. a few minutes,

  385. isn't real

  386. prayer.

  387. God,

  388. have mercy

  389. on me

  390. as sinner.

  391. Father,

  392. hallowed be

  393. your name.

  394. If you're here

  395. this morning

  396. and as you reflect

  397. on this passage,

  398. you wonder

  399. whether you've

  400. stopped praying

  401. really recently,

  402. then don't go

  403. home this afternoon

  404. resolved to get

  405. up tomorrow morning

  406. at 5am

  407. and to spend

  408. an intense hour

  409. in prayer.

  410. Go home this

  411. afternoon resolved

  412. to spend just a few

  413. minutes,

  414. just five minutes

  415. in prayer,

  416. simple prayer,

  417. tomorrow morning,

  418. expressing your

  419. dependence on

  420. God,

  421. calling on

  422. his mercy.

  423. And do the

  424. same tomorrow

  425. evening and

  426. tomorrow morning

  427. and the following

  428. evening.

  429. Keep going,

  430. keep praying,

  431. keep humbly

  432. calling on the

  433. Lord.

  434. So what does it

  435. mean to give up,

  436. to lose heart?

  437. To give up

  438. is to stop

  439. praying before

  440. Christ returns.

  441. Secondly,

  442. what might cause

  443. us to want

  444. to give up?

  445. So stopping

  446. praying and

  447. giving up go

  448. hand in hand,

  449. but what might

  450. cause us to

  451. stop praying?

  452. Well,

  453. the answer

  454. that this

  455. parable gives

  456. is a specific

  457. one.

  458. What causes

  459. Jesus'

  460. followers to

  461. want to give

  462. up is

  463. experiencing a

  464. lack of

  465. justice in

  466. their lives.

  467. Justice is a

  468. prominent theme

  469. in this parable.

  470. Jesus began

  471. in verse 2.

  472. In a certain

  473. city there

  474. was a

  475. judge.

  476. The role of

  477. the judge is

  478. to administer

  479. justice.

  480. In verse 3,

  481. the plea of

  482. the widow who

  483. kept coming to

  484. the judge is

  485. give me

  486. justice

  487. against my

  488. adversary.

  489. When the

  490. widow persists,

  491. the judge says

  492. in verse 5,

  493. because this

  494. widow keeps

  495. bothering me,

  496. I will give

  497. her justice.

  498. What might

  499. have caused

  500. this lady,

  501. this widow,

  502. to give

  503. up?

  504. Experiencing a

  505. lack of

  506. justice,

  507. perhaps for

  508. a long time.

  509. Justice is

  510. at the center

  511. of this

  512. parable.

  513. And justice

  514. is at the

  515. center of

  516. Jesus'

  517. explanation of

  518. the parable

  519. in verses

  520. 7 and 8.

  521. Jesus says,

  522. and will

  523. not God

  524. give justice

  525. to his

  526. elect who

  527. cry to

  528. him day

  529. and night?

  530. Will he

  531. delay long

  532. over them?

  533. I tell

  534. you,

  535. he will

  536. give justice

  537. to them

  538. speedily.

  539. Nevertheless,

  540. when the

  541. Son of

  542. Man comes,

  543. will he

  544. find faith

  545. on earth?

  546. What might

  547. cause God's

  548. people to

  549. want to

  550. give up?

  551. A lack

  552. of

  553. justice.

  554. Experiencing

  555. injustice.

  556. Notice again

  557. that Jesus is

  558. assuming something

  559. here.

  560. In the same

  561. way that he

  562. assumed Jesus'

  563. followers would

  564. want to at

  565. times give up,

  566. he also assumes

  567. that his followers

  568. will suffer

  569. injustice

  570. before he

  571. returns.

  572. He doesn't

  573. qualify what

  574. he says in

  575. verse 7 with

  576. an if.

  577. He doesn't

  578. say,

  579. and will

  580. not God

  581. bring about

  582. justice for

  583. his elect

  584. if they

  585. suffer injustice

  586. before the

  587. Son of

  588. Man returns.

  589. No,

  590. he sees it

  591. as a given

  592. that his

  593. followers will

  594. suffer injustice

  595. and that when

  596. his followers

  597. suffer injustice,

  598. they might

  599. well find

  600. themselves wanting

  601. to lose

  602. heart and

  603. give up.

  604. Christians

  605. suffer

  606. injustice all

  607. around the

  608. world today,

  609. don't they?

  610. And some

  611. of it can

  612. feel quite

  613. far removed

  614. from us.

  615. A friend

  616. of mine was

  617. telling me

  618. that some

  619. missionaries

  620. were giving

  621. an update

  622. at a conference

  623. he was at

  624. recently.

  625. These people

  626. were missionaries

  627. in India

  628. to a particular

  629. people group

  630. and they

  631. spoke of how

  632. because of

  633. their work

  634. to this

  635. people group

  636. their wives

  637. had been

  638. abused

  639. and they'd

  640. been imprisoned

  641. without

  642. explanation.

  643. It's

  644. horrific

  645. and it

  646. can leave

  647. us wondering

  648. whether we

  649. here in this

  650. part of the

  651. world suffer

  652. at all for

  653. the cause

  654. of the

  655. gospel.

  656. But it

  657. would be a

  658. mistake for

  659. us to think

  660. that we

  661. don't suffer

  662. at all for

  663. our faith.

  664. There's the

  665. Christian at

  666. work who

  667. because of

  668. his faith

  669. he works

  670. with utter

  671. integrity

  672. and instead

  673. of being

  674. rewarded

  675. he's denied

  676. promotions and

  677. he's stifled

  678. in his

  679. career.

  680. There's the

  681. Christian at

  682. work who

  683. feels unable

  684. to express

  685. her views

  686. on certain

  687. subjects

  688. because of

  689. how it would

  690. ostracize her

  691. from her

  692. colleagues and

  693. seemingly

  694. inevitably have

  695. a detrimental

  696. effect on

  697. her career

  698. too.

  699. There's the

  700. Christian who

  701. has been let

  702. down and

  703. messed around

  704. in relationships

  705. really through

  706. no fault of

  707. their own.

  708. There's the

  709. Christian who

  710. experiences a

  711. distance in

  712. relationships with

  713. family members

  714. and friends

  715. who they

  716. were previously

  717. closest to

  718. because they

  719. no longer

  720. share their

  721. faith.

  722. Then there's

  723. all the

  724. injustices that

  725. come with

  726. life in a

  727. fallen world.

  728. An unbalanced

  729. world in which

  730. the scales are

  731. broken.

  732. Unbearably

  733. ill health.

  734. Inconsolable

  735. loss.

  736. Daily

  737. frustrations

  738. and struggles

  739. that sometimes

  740. mean we just

  741. don't want to

  742. get out of

  743. bed in the

  744. morning.

  745. And all of

  746. these injustices

  747. bring with

  748. them the

  749. power to

  750. cause us to

  751. sigh.

  752. I give up.

  753. I give up.

  754. What will

  755. those

  756. need a

  757. need a

  758. need a

  759. need a

  760. need a

  761. need a

  762. need a

  763. need a

  764. need a
