  1. Do sit and in your series sheet you should have an outline of tonight's sermon.

  2. ! It's the same structure over the four weeks of the series on marriage.

  3. ! I think it'll help you in some ways. I think it's the only way you'll keep track tonight.

  4. So do keep that open before you.

  5. And Matthew chapter 19.

    Matthew 19 chapter mention

  6. I want to start tonight by stating the obvious.

  7. That between Genesis chapter 2, which we looked at last week, and Matthew chapter 19,

Genesis 2 chapter mention Matthew 19 chapter mention

  8. a lot of water has passed under the bridge.

  9. Last week, we looked at what God said about marriage and singleness at the very beginning.

  10. But between then and when Jesus arrives on the scene many years later,

  11. in that time we hear about lots of marriages in the Old Testament.

  12. Some are described in the Bible in very positive terms.

  13. But many of the marriages we read about in the Old Testament are downright terrible.

  14. And yet even in the midst of husbands and wives hurting each other and acting wickedly,

  15. God is working out his gracious promises and purposes for his people.

  16. In particular in the Old Testament, he works out his purposes through children.

  17. He promises to Abraham and to David, depend utterly on the future generations.

  18. And likewise, God's promise of a Messiah will be fulfilled, won't it, through a significant birth.

  19. So from the perspective of the Old Testament, God's blessings for the world largely come through families who procreate.

  20. And in that context, being childless or unmarried is usually seen in the Old Testament in a largely negative light.

  21. To be unable to procreate in the New Testament was a source of great grief and shame.

  22. And so there is little or no evidence in the Old Testament of anyone voluntarily choosing singleness.

  23. There is, however, mention a number of times of those who are involuntarily single.

  24. They didn't choose it.

  25. The Old Testament speaks of eunuchs.

  26. Men who are either born without the ability to reproduce or have had their genitalia removed by some kind of overload.

  27. And of course, eunuchs did not have much status in society.

  28. They were generally used rather than loved.

  29. But not so with God.

  30. There's a really famous chapter of Isaiah, chapter 56.

    Isaiah 56 chapter mention

  31. And God promises that in the days to come, even eunuchs who obey his word will be welcomed and they'll be included.

  32. In God's house, Isaiah says, and they will be given a name that is better than sons and daughters.

  33. A name that will endure forever.

  34. Probably the other thing to say about the years since the beginning from Genesis 2 to Matthew 19

  35. is that they included the giving of the law.

  36. And the law of Moses addressed issues which might arise in the course of a marriage.

  37. Even in the circumstances of how divorce was to happen.

  38. And how remarriage should be seen and handled.

  39. And so all of that is the setting into which Jesus comes and speaks.

  40. But of course, another key factor of the context and the setting in which Jesus speaks is this conflict.

  41. That he's in with the Jewish establishment.

  42. You don't have to read just more than a few verses in the Gospels to pick that up.

  43. The Jewish religious leaders, they are jealous of Jesus right from the start.

  44. They see Jesus undermining what they stand for.

  45. And in many ways, I guess he is, isn't he?

  46. But as a result, the Pharisees and the chief priests, the scribes,

  47. they are always on the lookout for ways to discredit him.

  48. And so once again, you see in Matthew 19 that.

  49. Ultimately, they're looking to get rid of him.

  50. The Jewish leaders in Matthew 19 are trying to trip Jesus up.

  51. And Matthew makes it very clear to us in verse 4

  52. that the questions about divorce do not flow from a genuine or a humble inquiry.

  53. They come from a desire to test Jesus and to embarrass him.

  54. And so whilst the Jewish leaders were seeking to undo Jesus,

  55. many of the other people couldn't get enough of him.

  56. Crowds followed Jesus wherever he went.

  57. They may not have all been disciples.

  58. They weren't.

  59. But they were certainly fascinated by him.

  60. In our day, I wonder, it's a little bit like when people follow a celebrity online, on Twitter.

  61. Do you remember when all those millions followed Donald Trump?

  62. They didn't follow Donald Trump.

  63. Maybe you followed Donald Trump.

  64. You didn't follow Donald Trump because he was supportive of all his tweets.

  65. But you just couldn't wait to find out, well, what's he going to say next?

  66. And so it is with Jesus here.

  67. Jesus has just finished teaching the people in parables.

  68. And we come to chapter 19, verses 1 and 2.

  69. Now when Jesus finished these things, the parables, he went away from Galilee.

  70. He entered into the region of Judea, beyond the Jordan.

  71. And large crowds followed him.

  72. And he healed them there.

  73. They're thinking, what will Jesus say next?

  74. What will he do next?

  75. Well, let's think carefully about how Matthew answers that question.

  76. Point 2 on your outlines is out of an exposition.

  77. So it begins in verse 3 with a question from the Pharisees.

  78. Is it lawful to divorce one's wife for any cause?

  79. Now that question is as silly as it sounds, isn't it?

  80. Any cause is a lot of causes.

  81. Anything from she killed my mother to she burnt the toast.

  82. And they must have known that it was unlikely that Jesus would say yes.

  83. But of course they could only hope.

  84. Because this was the set-up question, wasn't it?

  85. They were planning to sting him with their follow-up question.

  86. But even though it wasn't a very serious question,

  87. Jesus responds with a very serious answer.

  88. Look at verse 4.

  89. Have you not read that he who created them from the beginning

  90. made them male and female and said,

  91. therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife.

  92. And the two shall become one flesh.

  93. So they are no longer two, but one flesh.

  94. And what therefore God has joined together, let not man separate.

  95. Oh, there's a little barb, isn't there?

  96. Look at the start of verse 4.

  97. Haven't you read?

  98. No, he's saying the answer to your question

  99. is there in black and white on the pages of the Bible.

  100. Genesis chapter 2, actually.

    Genesis 2 chapter mention

  101. And not only is this the best of ancient wisdom,

  102. these are the words of your creator.

  103. Effectively, Jesus answers their question

  104. with a very strong and emphatic no.

  105. It is not lawful for a man to divorce his wife for any and every reason.

  106. So God created marriages to be a profound and sacred union

  107. between a man and a woman.

  108. So profound, in fact, that God describes them as being one flesh.

  109. And what is more, Jesus says they are one flesh

  110. because they are joined by God,

  111. joined for a lifetime,

  112. not to be separate.

  113. And Jesus is basically saying

  114. divorce is never good.

  115. If God has joined two people together,

  116. then divorce is man

  117. undoing the work of God.

  118. Therefore, what God has joined together,

  119. let no one separate.

  120. Well, you see the Pharisees,

  121. they think they've caught Jesus.

  122. They're happy with his answer

  123. because they think Jesus has just contradicted Moses.

  124. Is Jesus saying that Moses got it wrong?

  125. So in verse 7,

  126. they refer Jesus back to Deuteronomy,

    Deuteronomy 4 chapter mention

  127. chapter 4,

  128. and this is their second question.

  129. Why then did Moses command one

  130. to give a certificate of divorce

  131. and send her away?

  132. And Jesus responds to them, doesn't he,

  133. in verse 8,

  134. and the first thing he does

  135. is correct the Pharisees'

  136. understanding of the law.

  137. He tells them Moses didn't command

  138. divorce.

  139. Very carefully,

  140. Jesus uses the word permitted

  141. or allowed.

  142. Verse 8,

  143. because of your hardness of heart,

  144. Moses allowed you

  145. to divorce your wives,

  146. but from the beginning,

  147. it was not so.

  148. And Jesus' explanation

  149. is that the law of God

  150. permitted divorce for sin.

  151. I think that means

  152. for hardness of heart.

  153. But the law wasn't turning its back

  154. on Genesis 2.

  155. The law was making provision

  156. for human sinfulness.

  157. Since marriages were ending

  158. and men were sending away their wives,

  159. there needed to be legislation.

  160. There needed to be protection

  161. for the defenseless

  162. to regulate how those

  163. sort of tragic circumstances

  164. be handled.

  165. But Jesus says,

  166. it wasn't like that

  167. in the beginning.

  168. He's reminding them again

  169. of Genesis chapter 2.

    Genesis 2 chapter mention

  170. And I don't think Jesus' argument

  171. is very difficult for us at all.

  172. If somebody breaks into your house

  173. to steal your computer

  174. and you happen to catch them red-handed,

  175. the law may allow you, I think,

  176. to detain that person,

  177. but it prevents you

  178. from using excessive force.

  179. There are laws like this today

  180. that describe how people

  181. should react in unfortunate

  182. or difficult circumstances.

  183. So just because there's a law

  184. about how to treat a burglar,

  185. it doesn't mean that the law

  186. thinks burglary is okay, does it?

  187. In the same way,

  188. just because the Old Testament law

  189. described how to respond

  190. to the ending of a marriage,

  191. it doesn't mean that the ending

  192. of a marriage is fine.

  193. In fact, Jesus says

  194. the ending of a marriage

  195. is not fine.

  196. It is not what God wants.

  197. It is not how God designed us.

  198. And he underlines that again

  199. in verse 9.

  200. Look what he says.

  201. He says,

  202. He's saying that in the eyes of God,

  203. there's no difference between a man

  204. having sex with another woman

  205. behind his wife's back

  206. and formally divorcing her

  207. and then going to have sex

  208. with another woman,

  209. even if the other woman

  210. becomes his wife.

  211. Now, of course,

  212. Jesus' position on this matter

  213. isn't actually

  214. that black and white.

  215. Because as you'll notice

  216. in verse 9,

  217. he allows an exception.

  218. The verdict that he's just given

  219. doesn't apply universally,

  220. he says.

  221. He's not saying

  222. remarriage after divorce

  223. is adulterous in every case.

  224. He seems to be saying

  225. in the case of sexual immorality,

  226. divorce is not a sin.

  227. And by extension,

  228. remarriage after divorce

  229. on those grounds

  230. is not adulterous before God.

  231. Now, what are these grounds

  232. that he's talking about?

  233. What does sexual immorality mean

  234. in this passage?

  235. Sexual immorality

  236. is any sexual conduct

  237. which exists outside

  238. the boundaries of moral sex

  239. between a married man

  240. and a woman.

  241. So it certainly refers

  242. to adultery.

  243. But it also refers,

  244. I think,

  245. to a wider category

  246. of sexual unfaithfulness

  247. as well.

  248. So Jesus is saying,

  249. if your marriage

  250. comes to an end

  251. because your spouse

  252. betrays you sexually,

  253. then there is something

  254. about that act

  255. which unravels

  256. what God has done

  257. in a unique way.

  258. And under those circumstances,

  259. God permits divorce

  260. and does not consider

  261. adultery,

  262. remarriage adultery,

  263. adulterous.

  264. Now, notice he's not

  265. commanding divorce

  266. in those terrible circumstances.

  267. No doubt,

  268. God would be delighted

  269. to find that two followers

  270. of Jesus

  271. that suffered

  272. the worst kind

  273. of betrayal

  274. could still show

  275. each other repentance

  276. and real forgiveness

  277. so that the marriage

  278. could be saved.

  279. I'm aware

  280. that would be

  281. very,

  282. very hard.

  283. But it would also

  284. be very wonderful.

  285. But it's not always

  286. possible,

  287. is it?

  288. And Jesus is acknowledging

  289. that where that is

  290. not possible,

  291. this exception

  292. can apply.

  293. I just want to

  294. take a step back

  295. here for a moment.

  296. And I want to acknowledge

  297. how hard

  298. Jesus' words are

  299. here.

  300. And for many of us

  301. who are here tonight

  302. and maybe you are watching,

  303. how painful.

  304. There'll be some people

  305. here tonight

  306. who've lived through

  307. the aching sorrow

  308. of a broken marriage.

  309. Others of you

  310. will have experienced it

  311. as a child

  312. in a broken home.

  313. others of you

  314. have supported people

  315. that they love

  316. as they go through

  317. divorce.

  318. I'd be really surprised

  319. if the vast majority

  320. of us have not been

  321. affected

  322. by the pain

  323. of divorce

  324. in some way or another.

  325. And for some here

  326. tonight,

  327. the very mention

  328. of the word

  329. brings a sick feeling

  330. to your stomach.

  331. Tears to the back

  332. of your eyes.

  333. And I'm conscious

  334. of those

  335. in our church family

  336. who will be listening

  337. to this

  338. and finding it

  339. very difficult.

  340. I don't find

  341. any joy

  342. in stirring up

  343. those emotions.

  344. But we must hear

  345. what Jesus says

  346. to us.

  347. The sheep need

  348. to hear the voice

  349. of the Good Shepherd.

  350. And this is what

  351. the Good Shepherd

  352. says to us.

  353. On the one hand,

  354. he says something

  355. very black and white

  356. which is his

  357. major point.

  358. Marriage

  359. is for life.

  360. All divorce

  361. is a terrible

  362. departure

  363. from God's

  364. intention.

  365. And for the record,

  366. I think those

  367. who've maybe

  368. experienced divorce

  369. first hand

  370. would probably

  371. be the first

  372. to agree with that.

  373. They know

  374. all too

  375. painfully

  376. that that is not

  377. how things were

  378. meant to be.

  379. But Jesus

  380. also says something

  381. that is less

  382. black and white

  383. and more great.

  384. Here is his

  385. minor point.

  386. He says in the

  387. case of a marriage

  388. being torn apart

  389. by sexual

  390. immorality,

  391. there is an

  392. exception to

  393. this principle.

  394. Let's move on

  395. to verses 10

  396. to 12.

  397. Because there

  398. we hear from

  399. Jesus' disciples.

  400. They are listening

  401. to Jesus

  402. and they answer

  403. the Pharisees'

  404. question.

  405. They've got a

  406. question of their

  407. own.

  408. Look at verse

  409. 10.

  410. They say if this

  411. is the situation

  412. between a husband

  413. and wife,

  414. it's better not

  415. to marry.

  416. It's not

  417. entirely clear

  418. what the

  419. disciples are

  420. referring to,

  421. reacting to.

  422. But they seem

  423. to be saying

  424. if this is the

  425. kind of commitment

  426. that God

  427. expects,

  428. that if God

  429. is really serious

  430. about this

  431. lifelong faithfulness

  432. thing,

  433. then wouldn't

  434. it be better

  435. just to stay

  436. single?

  437. In verse 11,

  438. Jesus seems

  439. to allow that

  440. there's a strong

  441. logic in what

  442. the disciples

  443. say.

  444. Jesus says

  445. in verse 11,

  446. some can't

  447. accept that

  448. logic that

  449. is.

  450. There are

  451. those who

  452. won't choose

  453. singleness

  454. because God

  455. hasn't given

  456. them a life

  457. of singleness.

  458. But there are

  459. others who've

  460. been given a

  461. single life,

  462. verse 12,

  463. and Jesus

  464. says there in

  465. that verse,

  466. there are some

  467. also who are

  468. born incapable

  469. of a sexual

  470. relationship.

  471. There are some

  472. who've been

  473. cruelly made

  474. that way at

  475. the hands of

  476. other men,

  477. and there are

  478. still others

  479. who willingly

  480. choose a

  481. life of

  482. singleness

  483. so they

  484. might serve

  485. the kingdom.

  486. And in

  487. any of those

  488. situations,

  489. God has

  490. given them

  491. singleness.

  492. And so

  493. Jesus says

  494. to the one

  495. to whom

  496. has been

  497. given,

  498. the one

  499. who can

  500. accept it

  501. should accept

  502. it.

  503. The culture

  504. that we live

  505. in today hates

  506. celibacy.

  507. Can't understand

  508. it.

  509. But once

  510. again,

  511. we find

  512. the Lord

  513. Jesus

  514. butting

  515. heads

  516. with our

  517. culture.

  518. He describes

  519. people who've

  520. been given

  521. a life of

  522. celibacy

  523. by God,

  524. some by

  525. virtue of

  526. their birth,

  527. some by

  528. virtue of

  529. the circumstances

  530. by which

  531. they live.

  532. And there

  533. are some,

  534. Jesus says,

  535. who voluntarily

  536. choose singleness

  537. for a time,

  538. either for a

  539. time or

  540. permanently,

  541. in order to

  542. devote themselves

  543. to God's

  544. work.

  545. Jesus

  546. himself would

  547. be an

  548. example of

  549. that last

  550. category,

  551. wouldn't he?

  552. Jesus

  553. lives like

  554. a eunuch,

  555. to use his

  556. phrase,

  557. for the sake

  558. of the king.

  559. And so

  560. by the words

  561. he speaks

  562. here,

  563. and his

  564. own

  565. celibate

  566. singleness,

  567. Jesus affirms

  568. what we saw

  569. in Genesis 2

  570. last week,

  571. that marriage

  572. is not the

  573. ultimate thing,

  574. sex is not

  575. the ultimate

  576. thing.

  577. sexual

  578. intimacy is

  579. not ultimate.

  580. For some,

  581. marriage is a

  582. precious and

  583. wonderful gift

  584. from God,

  585. but for

  586. others,

  587. the unmarried

  588. life is

  589. God's gift.

  590. Now,

  591. let's take

  592. some time to

  593. kind of pause

  594. and think

  595. through the

  596. implications of

  597. this.

  598. What is

  599. Jesus saying

  600. for both

  601. marriage and

  602. for singleness?

  603. So,

  604. two things

  605. about marriage.

  606. number one,

  607. Jesus teaches

  608. that marriage

  609. is a

  610. joining

  611. by God.

  612. I think

  613. Jesus is

  614. taking something

  615. that's

  616. implicit in

  617. Genesis 2

  618. and making

  619. it explicit

  620. in Matthew

  621. 19.

  622. Jesus

  623. thinks it's

  624. really crucial

  625. that you

  626. don't miss

  627. this tonight.

  628. marriage.

  629. And I

  630. think this

  631. conclusion is

  632. central to

  633. the whole

  634. way that

  635. Jesus thinks

  636. about marriage

  637. and everything

  638. else he's

  639. saying in

  640. these verses.

  641. I don't

  642. think it's

  643. saying,

  644. I don't

  645. think it's

  646. overstating to

  647. say that the

  648. crucial five

  649. words of this

  650. passage are

  651. there in

  652. verse 6.

  653. What God

  654. has joined

  655. together.

  656. together.

  657. What God

  658. has joined

  659. together.

  660. It's really

  661. struck me this

  662. week as I've

  663. studied this,

  664. that when a

  665. man and a

  666. woman get

  667. married,

  668. they are not

  669. just joined by

  670. their mutual

  671. consent and

  672. promise.

  673. They are

  674. certainly not

  675. just joined by

  676. the words that

  677. a minister

  678. pronounces.

  679. when a man

  680. and a woman

  681. get married,

  682. they are

  683. joined by

  684. God.

  685. When you go

  686. to a wedding,

  687. what do you

  688. see?

  689. You see,

  690. you witness a

  691. couple making

  692. vows to each

  693. other,

  694. joining hands,

  695. exchanging

  696. rings,

  697. kissing each

  698. other,

  699. being given

  700. away by

  701. parents,

  702. being pronounced

  703. man and

  704. wife by the

  705. person who

  706. officiates.

  707. But the most

  708. significant thing

  709. that happens at

  710. a wedding,

  711. you can't

  712. see.

  713. there is a

  714. somber,

  715. really serious,

  716. quite terrifying

  717. moment that

  718. is invisible at

  719. every wedding,

  720. which is the

  721. thing that

  722. matters most.

  723. The God who

  724. imagined marriage

  725. and who

  726. created it to

  727. be a profound

  728. and intimate

  729. union,

  730. the God who

  731. is the author

  732. of love,

  733. that God

  734. joins people

  735. together.

  736. And so,

  737. if you're

  738. married tonight,

  739. God has

  740. done something

  741. to you.

  742. He has

  743. glued you

  744. together with

  745. your husband

  746. or wife.

  747. And it's

  748. on that

  749. basis that

  750. you must

  751. think of

  752. your marriage

  753. as lifelong,

  754. not to be

  755. unjoined.

  756. It is because

  757. your lives

  758. have been

  759. merged by

  760. God himself

  761. that you

  762. must not

  763. unmerge

  764. them.

  765. God has

  766. joined

  767. together.

  768. Let no

  769. man

  770. separate.

  771. Now,

  772. as we've

  773. seen,

  774. that's a

  775. really

  776. black and

  777. white

  778. statement.

  779. But there's

  780. also some

  781. gray,

  782. isn't there?

  783. And the

  784. gray we see

  785. here is

  786. because of

  787. sin.

  788. And Jesus

  789. speaks

  790. specifically

  791. about sin

  792. on two

  793. occasions here,

  794. I think.

  795. Verse 8,

  796. where he

  797. says that the

  798. relevant Old

  799. Testament laws

  800. have been

  801. given because

  802. of hard-heartedness.

  803. And then

  804. secondly in

  805. verse 9,

  806. where he

  807. acknowledges that

  808. marriages are

  809. shipwrecked by

  810. the sin of

  811. sexual immorality.

  812. Yes,

  813. there is

  814. sin.

  815. And sin

  816. brings with

  817. it all sorts

  818. of brokenness

  819. and complexity.

  820. And so

  821. life is not

  822. always to be

  823. lived with

  824. just the

  825. black and

  826. the white

  827. in view.

  828. And sometimes

  829. we need

  830. God's help

  831. to find

  832. the best

  833. thing to

  834. do in

  835. a terribly

  836. broken

  837. situation.

  838. And the

  839. scriptures give

  840. us guidance

  841. here in

  842. verse 9,

  843. as we're

  844. going to

  845. see in

  846. 1 Corinthians

  847. 7 next

  848. week.

  849. But I

  850. want to

  851. focus

  852. tonight on

  853. the black

  854. and white

  855. because that

  856. is Jesus'

  857. major point.

  858. And I

  859. want to

  860. tease out the

  861. implications of

  862. Jesus'

  863. major point.

  864. Whether we're

  865. divorced or

  866. married or

  867. single or

  868. looking to

  869. marry,

  870. and I

  871. want to

  872. speak to

  873. each of

  874. those groups

  875. in turn.

  876. Firstly,

  877. to the

  878. divorced.

  879. because life

  880. is messy

  881. and broken

  882. as a result

  883. of sin,

  884. some of

  885. us may

  886. have lived

  887. through the

  888. tragedy of

  889. a broken

  890. marriage.

  891. I want to

  892. point out to

  893. you tonight

  894. that Jesus

  895. did not

  896. speak these

  897. words to

  898. make divorced

  899. people feel

  900. guilty.

  901. Jesus

  902. knows the

  903. circumstances

  904. of every

  905. divorce.

  906. And Jesus

  907. is able,

  908. well able,

  909. to look

  910. compassionately

  911. on his

  912. people who

  913. have lived

  914. through that

  915. pain.

  916. As you

  917. know,

  918. God has

  919. made a

  920. way for

  921. people to

  922. be forgiven

  923. for every

  924. sin.

  925. And

  926. depending on

  927. the reasons

  928. for your

  929. divorce,

  930. it may be

  931. that you

  932. need to

  933. repent of

  934. having gone

  935. down that

  936. road.

  937. may not

  938. be the

  939. case,

  940. but some

  941. may have

  942. divorced for

  943. reasons that

  944. Jesus does

  945. not permit.

  946. And if

  947. that is true

  948. for you,

  949. your divorce

  950. was not

  951. right.

  952. And you

  953. ought to

  954. confess it

  955. to God.

  956. If there's

  957. any way to

  958. be reconciled

  959. to your

  960. former spouse,

  961. then you

  962. should consider

  963. that seriously

  964. too.

  965. Now,

  966. of course,

  967. in many

  968. cases,

  969. that is not

  970. possible.

  971. And it

  972. may not be

  973. possible,

  974. maybe because

  975. you've

  976. married

  977. again.

  978. And if

  979. that is

  980. the case,

  981. God certainly

  982. wants you

  983. to be

  984. faithful to

  985. your new

  986. spouse.

  987. The Bible

  988. never advocates

  989. a repentance

  990. for divorce

  991. that involves

  992. divorcing

  993. someone else.

  994. There may

  995. be other

  996. reasons why

  997. reconciliation

  998. isn't

  999. possible.

  1000. Whether it

  1001. is or not,

  1002. a Christian

  1003. who is

  1004. divorced when

  1005. they should

  1006. not have

  1007. divorced needs

  1008. to trust

  1009. God for

  1010. his forgiveness

  1011. and for

  1012. his cleansing.

  1013. unforgiveness

  1014. may not

  1015. mean that

  1016. you're free

  1017. to marry

  1018. again.

  1019. It may

  1020. not mean

  1021. that you

  1022. can avoid

  1023. some of

  1024. the painful

  1025. consequences

  1026. of your

  1027. decisions.

  1028. But it

  1029. certainly does

  1030. mean this,

  1031. that you

  1032. can rest

  1033. in the arms

  1034. of the

  1035. unqualified

  1036. love of

  1037. God.

  1038. The blood

  1039. of Jesus

  1040. spilt on

  1041. the cross

  1042. means there

  1043. is grace

  1044. without

  1045. exception.

  1046. And we

  1047. are clean

  1048. in his

  1049. sight.

  1050. And so

  1051. God does

  1052. not hold

  1053. your past

  1054. against you.

  1055. And nothing

  1056. can change

  1057. that.

  1058. And

  1059. secondly,

  1060. to the

  1061. married.

  1062. Because the

  1063. primary application

  1064. of Matthew

  1065. 19 is towards

  1066. those who are

  1067. married,

  1068. and to us

  1069. he says

  1070. this,

  1071. he says,

  1072. what God

  1073. has joined

  1074. don't

  1075. unjoin.

  1076. and what

  1077. God has

  1078. knitted

  1079. together

  1080. don't

  1081. unravel.

  1082. And he

  1083. wants us

  1084. to work

  1085. tirelessly

  1086. at an

  1087. extreme

  1088. cost,

  1089. if necessary,

  1090. to protect

  1091. our marriages

  1092. from harm.

  1093. And so

  1094. tonight,

  1095. I want to

  1096. ask you

  1097. if you're

  1098. doing that,

  1099. that's not

  1100. a light

  1101. thing,

  1102. it's not

  1103. a little

  1104. thing.

  1105. You've

  1106. been joined

  1107. together,

  1108. not just

  1109. by a

  1110. minister,

  1111. or your

  1112. shared

  1113. consent,

  1114. but by

  1115. God

  1116. himself.

  1117. A

  1118. one

  1119. flesh

  1120. relationship

  1121. like this

  1122. is to

  1123. be

  1124. treasured,

  1125. it's a

  1126. very

  1127. precious

  1128. gift.

  1129. But if

  1130. it's

  1131. something

  1132. to be

  1133. treasured,

  1134. it's

  1135. also

  1136. something

  1137. to be

  1138. protected,

  1139. isn't

  1140. it?

  1141. Will

  1142. you do

  1143. whatever

  1144. it takes

  1145. so that

  1146. your

  1147. marriage

  1148. will

  1149. last

  1150. a

  1151. lifetime?

  1152. That

  1153. might

  1154. mean

  1155. as

  1156. you've

  1157. listened

  1158. to

  1159. this

  1160. sermon,

  1161. you

  1162. realize

  1163. that

  1164. you need

  1165. to

  1166. meet

  1167. with

  1168. someone

  1169. to

  1170. work

  1171. through

  1172. some

  1173. issues.

  1174. It

  1175. might

  1176. mean

  1177. getting

  1178. some

  1179. help

  1180. to

  1181. tackle

  1182. an

  1183. addiction.

  1184. It

  1185. might

  1186. mean

  1187. dropping

  1188. a

  1189. friendship

  1190. if

  1191. that

  1192. friendship

  1193. is an

  1194. impediment

  1195. to your

  1196. marriage

  1197. in some

  1198. way.

  1199. It

  1200. might

  1201. mean

  1202. a

  1203. complete

  1204. reorientation

  1205. of your

  1206. life's

  1207. priorities.

  1208. It

  1209. might

  1210. even

  1211. mean

  1212. a

  1213. new

  1214. job.

  1215. Whatever

  1216. else it

  1217. means,

  1218. it

  1219. certainly

  1220. means

  1221. this,

  1222. daily

  1223. hard

  1224. work,

  1225. daily

  1226. thoughtfulness,

  1227. daily

  1228. repentance

  1229. of sin,

  1230. daily

  1231. prayer,

  1232. daily

  1233. grace

  1234. towards

  1235. your

  1236. spouse,

  1237. and

  1238. daily

  1239. forbearance,

  1240. and

  1241. daily

  1242. attentiveness

  1243. to this

  1244. relationship.

  1245. Anything

  1246. less than

  1247. this kind

  1248. of commitment

  1249. will make

  1250. it very

  1251. hard for

  1252. you to

  1253. do what

  1254. Jesus

  1255. asks of

  1256. you here.

  1257. and

  1258. anything

  1259. less than

  1260. that kind

  1261. of commitment

  1262. leads

  1263. you to

  1264. become

  1265. another

  1266. statistic.

  1267. And so

  1268. you probably

  1269. know that

  1270. the statistics

  1271. on divorce

  1272. amongst

  1273. Christians

  1274. are horrifying.

  1275. I read

  1276. one writer

  1277. this week

  1278. who said

  1279. Jesus would

  1280. be appalled

  1281. at the

  1282. ease and

  1283. frequency

  1284. with which

  1285. divorce takes

  1286. place today.

  1287. And I

  1288. suspect he's

  1289. right.

  1290. In fact,

  1291. I wonder

  1292. whether future

  1293. generations

  1294. will look

  1295. back at

  1296. this kind

  1297. of period

  1298. of church

  1299. history,

  1300. and what

  1301. will they

  1302. say when

  1303. it comes

  1304. to the

  1305. issue of

  1306. marriage

  1307. and divorce?

  1308. You know,

  1309. we look

  1310. back,

  1311. don't we,

  1312. on slavery,

  1313. and we

  1314. think to

  1315. ourselves,

  1316. how was it

  1317. that so

  1318. many Christians

  1319. did not

  1320. have a

  1321. problem

  1322. with

  1323. Christians

  1324. owning

  1325. slaves?

  1326. How was

  1327. it that

  1328. so many

  1329. Christians

  1330. helped

  1331. perpetuate

  1332. slavery

  1333. as an

  1334. institution?

  1335. How blind

  1336. were they?

  1337. And I

  1338. wonder whether

  1339. future

  1340. generations

  1341. might look

  1342. at ours

  1343. and say

  1344. the same

  1345. about

  1346. marriage.

  1347. How did

  1348. so many

  1349. Christians

  1350. not have

  1351. a problem

  1352. with getting

  1353. divorced and

  1354. marrying again?

  1355. How is it

  1356. that so many

  1357. Christians

  1358. helped

  1359. perpetuate

  1360. a kind

  1361. of casual

  1362. attitude

  1363. to lifelong

  1364. enduring

  1365. marriage?

  1366. Is the

  1367. Bible not

  1368. clear?

  1369. Yeah?

  1370. How Christians

  1371. in our day

  1372. come to see

  1373. Matthew 19

    Matthew 19:6

  1374. verse 6

  1375. if you just

  1376. look at it?

  1377. Do we

  1378. see that

  1379. maybe more

  1380. as an

  1381. ideal

  1382. to aim

  1383. for

  1384. but

  1385. something

  1386. that's

  1387. regrettably

  1388. beyond

  1389. us?

  1390. But many

  1391. of you

  1392. wonderfully

  1393. thankfully

  1394. are living

  1395. faithfully

  1396. in your

  1397. marriages.

  1398. And so

  1399. I don't

  1400. want to

  1401. just offer

  1402. a challenge

  1403. to the

  1404. casualness

  1405. that might

  1406. be in

  1407. our view

  1408. of marriage.

  1409. I also

  1410. want to

  1411. remind you

  1412. of the

  1413. beauty

  1414. and the

  1415. wisdom

  1416. of living

  1417. God's

  1418. way.

  1419. And so

  1420. I wish

  1421. I had

  1422. ours.

  1423. I could

  1424. tell you

  1425. stories

  1426. about this.

  1427. I don't

  1428. have

  1429. ours but

  1430. if I

  1431. did I

  1432. tell you

  1433. of Mark

  1434. whose

  1435. wife came

  1436. home

  1437. and told

  1438. him of

  1439. the

  1440. colleague

  1441. that she

  1442. betrayed

  1443. him with.

  1444. And I

  1445. tell you

  1446. how he

  1447. still lives

  1448. with the

  1449. hurt

  1450. and

  1451. struggles

  1452. with

  1453. trust

  1454. but how

  1455. he stood

  1456. by her

  1457. from then

  1458. on till

  1459. now.

  1460. I could

  1461. tell you

  1462. of Jennifer

  1463. whose husband

  1464. is an

  1465. alcoholic

  1466. who hid

  1467. it from

  1468. her for

  1469. years

  1470. and still

  1471. often

  1472. lies about

  1473. it now

  1474. who keeps

  1475. forgiving

  1476. him and

  1477. supporting

  1478. him and

  1479. loving him

  1480. as he

  1481. battles

  1482. his addiction.

  1483. I tell

  1484. you about

  1485. a man

  1486. called

  1487. Sam

  1488. a lady

  1489. called

  1490. Sam

  1491. whose

  1492. husband

  1493. is a

  1494. shell

  1495. of the

  1496. man she

  1497. married

  1498. because

  1499. of the

  1500. grip

  1501. of

  1502. mental

  1503. illness

  1504. on his

  1505. life.

  1506. I tell

  1507. you about

  1508. how much

  1509. her life

  1510. has changed

  1511. in order

  1512. to care

  1513. for him.

  1514. How few

  1515. of her

  1516. emotional

  1517. needs

  1518. are met

  1519. by him.

  1520. How she

  1521. faithfully

  1522. walks her

  1523. lonely

  1524. road

  1525. alongside

  1526. him.

  1527. I could

  1528. tell you

  1529. about

  1530. Tom

  1531. whose

  1532. wife has

  1533. dementia

  1534. and who

  1535. now often

  1536. doesn't

  1537. recognise

  1538. him

  1539. and

  1540. forgets

  1541. his name

  1542. and regularly

  1543. shouts

  1544. abuse at

  1545. him and

  1546. even

  1547. throws

  1548. things

  1549. at

  1550. him.

  1551. But I

  1552. tell you

  1553. about how

  1554. he tenderly

  1555. brushes her

  1556. hair and

  1557. how he

  1558. patiently

  1559. prays for

  1560. her and

  1561. reads the

  1562. Bible to

  1563. her with

  1564. her in

  1565. her calmer

  1566. moments.

  1567. I tell

  1568. you about

  1569. Jan who

  1570. comes to

  1571. terms with

  1572. the confusion

  1573. that she

  1574. feels about

  1575. her husband's

  1576. repeated visits

  1577. to a

  1578. prostitute.

  1579. I could

  1580. tell you

  1581. what it

  1582. looks like

  1583. to be

  1584. faithful to

  1585. her husband

  1586. even though

  1587. she feels

  1588. sick to

  1589. look at

  1590. him lots

  1591. of times.

  1592. I've

  1593. changed

  1594. the

  1595. names

  1596. but the

  1597. stories are

  1598. all true.

  1599. Stories of

  1600. happy marriages

  1601. no

  1602. but stories

  1603. of Christian

  1604. brothers and

  1605. sisters who

  1606. are as

  1607. serious about

  1608. marriage as

  1609. Jesus is.

  1610. Beautiful

  1611. stories of

  1612. Christians who

  1613. treat Matthew

    Matthew 19:6

  1614. 19 verse 6

  1615. as if it's a

  1616. non-negotiable.

  1617. stories of

  1618. wise people

  1619. who are

  1620. deeply

  1621. convinced

  1622. that God's

  1623. way is

  1624. best.

  1625. So finally

  1626. on this

  1627. point let

  1628. me speak

  1629. to those

  1630. of you

  1631. who are

  1632. single and

  1633. would like

  1634. to be

  1635. married.

  1636. To those

  1637. who hope

  1638. for a

  1639. husband and

  1640. wife.

  1641. If you

  1642. don't think

  1643. that you

  1644. could stay

  1645. married to

  1646. someone who

  1647. developed a

  1648. serious mental

  1649. illness and

  1650. was no longer

  1651. meeting your

  1652. needs then

  1653. marriage isn't

  1654. for you.

  1655. If you

  1656. don't think

  1657. you could stay

  1658. married to

  1659. somebody who

  1660. broke their

  1661. wedding vows then

  1662. marriage isn't

  1663. for you.

  1664. If you

  1665. don't think

  1666. you could stay

  1667. married to

  1668. someone whose

  1669. personality really

  1670. changed and

  1671. became unkind and

  1672. unresponsive marriage

  1673. isn't for you.

  1674. If you don't

  1675. think you could

  1676. stay married to

  1677. somebody who

  1678. started taking

  1679. illicit drugs then

  1680. marriage isn't

  1681. for you.

  1682. The thing about

  1683. getting married is

  1684. you don't know

  1685. what the future

  1686. holds.

  1687. but you

  1688. nevertheless make

  1689. binding promises

  1690. that bind you to

  1691. be a certain

  1692. kind of person.

  1693. And so unless

  1694. you're really up

  1695. for richer or

  1696. poorer in

  1697. sickness or in

  1698. health for better

  1699. or for worse

  1700. then don't walk

  1701. down the aisle.

  1702. Don't make a

  1703. liar out of

  1704. yourself before

  1705. your family and

  1706. friends and before

  1707. God.

  1708. you'd be better

  1709. off like the

  1710. disciples

  1711. not get married

  1712. at all.

  1713. Which brings me

  1714. to point four

  1715. about singleness.

  1716. What do the

  1717. words of Jesus

  1718. mean for those

  1719. who are single?

  1720. And again two

  1721. things.

  1722. I think they

  1723. mirror what I

  1724. said last week

  1725. from Genesis 2.

  1726. The first is to

  1727. acknowledge that

  1728. singleness in one

  1729. sense is a

  1730. deprivation.

  1731. What I mean by

  1732. that is that the

  1733. single person really

  1734. is experiencing the

  1735. absence of something

  1736. good.

  1737. Just like Genesis 2

  1738. taught us.

  1739. Jesus affirms

  1740. doesn't he the

  1741. essential goodness

  1742. of marriage.

  1743. A profound unity

  1744. of two people

  1745. becoming one

  1746. flesh.

  1747. The rich blessing

1748. of what it is to

  1749. be bound to

  1750. another person

  1751. by God.

  1752. And so to not

  1753. be married is to

  1754. be deprived of

  1755. one of God's

  1756. blessings.

  1757. So it's not a

  1758. surprise to find

  1759. Jesus talking about

  1760. singleness by

  1761. discussing the

  1762. life of eunuchs.

  1763. Because eunuchs

  1764. by definition

  1765. live life with

  1766. deprivation against

  1767. their own will.

  1768. Although Jesus

  1769. acknowledges doesn't

  1770. he that some

  1771. eunuchs live

  1772. voluntarily like

  1773. that for the

  1774. sake of the

  1775. kingdom.

  1776. But even if

  1777. somebody does

  1778. choose to live

  1779. this life they

  1780. choose to go

  1781. without something

  1782. good.

  1783. And by doing so

  1784. they testify that

  1785. God himself is

  1786. more precious

  1787. than his

  1788. gifts.

  1789. They testify that

  1790. God can be

  1791. trusted utterly

  1792. even in the

  1793. face of

  1794. deprivation.

  1795. deprivation.

  1796. So Jesus'

  1797. language affirms

  1798. here at one

  1799. level singleness

  1800. is a deprivation

  1801. like Genesis 2

  1802. does.

  1803. Jesus dignifies

  1804. the grief that

  1805. many single

  1806. people feel in

  1807. not being

  1808. married.

  1809. And he affirms

  1810. the goodness of

  1811. the desire to be

  1812. married.

  1813. But at the

  1814. same time

  1815. Jesus is able

  1816. to speak about

  1817. how in another

  1818. way singleness

  1819. is better than

  1820. marriage.

  1821. You notice

  1822. that better is

  1823. the word that

  1824. the disciples

  1825. use in verse

  1826. 10.

  1827. It's interesting

  1828. isn't it?

  1829. Jesus doesn't

  1830. contradict them.

  1831. What is in the

  1832. disciples'

  1833. mind is that

  1834. singleness might

  1835. be better than

  1836. the extremely

  1837. high commitment

  1838. that Jesus

  1839. expects of

  1840. those who

  1841. marry?

  1842. And it

  1843. seems to me

  1844. that if the

  1845. question that

  1846. the disciples

  1847. ask in verse

  1848. 10 has never

  1849. found its way

  1850. into your

  1851. heart and

  1852. to your lips

  1853. then you

  1854. haven't really

  1855. understood what

  1856. Jesus is saying

  1857. about marriage.

  1858. Because if you

  1859. haven't grasped

  1860. all the

  1861. implications of

  1862. being joined

  1863. to someone

  1864. by God

  1865. then the

  1866. disciples'

  1867. question of

  1868. verse 10

  1869. is an

  1870. obvious question

  1871. to ask.

  1872. Of course

  1873. Jesus doesn't

  1874. challenge the

  1875. disciples for

  1876. thinking that

  1877. singleness might

  1878. be better than

  1879. marriage.

  1880. He also

  1881. suggests a

  1882. reason of

  1883. his own.

  1884. He says in

  1885. verse 12

  1886. that singleness

  1887. might be

  1888. better if you

  1889. want to serve

  1890. the kingdom

  1891. of heaven.

  1892. Now singleness

  1893. is the first

  1894. normal state

  1895. for every

  1896. Christian.

  1897. Everyone is

  1898. single at some

  1899. point in their

  1900. life.

  1901. Many are

  1902. single to begin

  1903. with, then

  1904. they're married,

  1905. and then they're

  1906. single again.

  1907. But we often

  1908. think of, don't

  1909. we, singleness

  1910. as a kind of

  1911. precursor to

  1912. marriage.

  1913. One writer

  1914. calls it a

  1915. calling in

  1916. incubation.

  1917. We think

  1918. singleness, well

  1919. it has some

  1920. value, but only

  1921. some value on

  1922. the way to

  1923. something else.

  1924. It's alright as

  1925. far as it goes,

  1926. but it might be

  1927. better when we

  1928. graduate to

  1929. marriage, but

  1930. that's not how

  1931. Jesus thinks.

  1932. In fact, if we

  1933. had time, we

  1934. could jump to

  1935. Matthew 22,

  1936. and read the

  1937. passage where

  1938. Jesus says

  1939. there'll be no

  1940. marriage at the

  1941. resurrection.

  1942. We'd see how

  1943. it is that Jesus

  1944. argues the

  1945. opposite.

  1946. He tells us

  1947. that marriage is

  1948. temporary.

  1949. In the end,

  1950. singleness is

  1951. permanent.

  1952. Marriage might be

  1953. lifelong, but it's

  1954. not eternal.

  1955. And that reminds us

  1956. again of what we

  1957. saw last week.

  1958. Marriage is not

  1959. ultimate.

  1960. Sex is not

  1961. ultimate.

  1962. intimate.

  1963. There's a

  1964. greater intimacy

  1965. in the universe

  1966. than anything that

  1967. is possible for

  1968. two human beings

  1969. to enjoy.

  1970. And Jesus

  1971. seems to suggest

  1972. in Matthew 22

  1973. that a day is

  1974. coming when the

  1975. intimacy of Jesus'

  1976. relationship with

  1977. his people will

  1978. utterly dwarf any

  1979. kind of intimacy

  1980. we've ever known.

1981. on that day, if a

  1982. husband enjoys an

  1983. ongoing relationship

  1984. with their spouse,

  1985. it won't be based

  1986. on marriage.

1987. It will be based on

  1988. their shared

  1989. membership of

  1990. Christ's church in

  1991. eternity.

  1992. Singleness will be

  1993. universal.

  1994. And it's because

  1995. Jesus believes that

  1996. the kingdom of

  1997. heaven, that that

  1998. is the ultimate

  1999. thing, he can

  2000. suggest even in the

  2001. here and the now,

  2002. singleness might be

  2003. better than marriage.

  2004. Because serving the

  2005. kingdom of God will

  2006. last forever.

  2007. the marriage won't.

  2008. That's really

  2009. consistent with what

  2010. Jesus says in the

  2011. Gospels, isn't it?

  2012. How he speaks about

  2013. family, Mark chapter

  2014. three.

2015. He tells us that his

  2016. family aren't mother

  2017. and brothers standing

  2018. outside the house

  2019. trying to see him,

2020. but his family are all

  2021. who do God's will.

2022. This is Jesus who in

  2023. Matthew chapter 10

    Matthew 10 chapter mention

2024. says he's come to turn

  2025. a son against his

  2026. father and a daughter

  2027. against his mother.

  2028. And that anyone who

  2029. loves their father or

  2030. mother more than him

2031. is not worthy of him.

  2032. This is Jesus when

  2033. Luke chapter 9 told a

    Luke 9 chapter mention

  2034. would-be disciple if he

2035. wanted to go and say

  2036. goodbye to his family,

  2037. he wasn't fit for

  2038. service in God's

  2039. kingdom.

  2040. And Jesus constantly

  2041. subverted the ideals

  2042. about family in his

  2043. day.

2044. And if that was true

  2045. then, how much more

  2046. is that true now?

2047. In our society and in

  2048. church life, which

  2049. often idolizes family,

  2050. Jesus drives a bull

  2051. dozer through our

  2052. cultural values.

  2053. time after time,

  2054. Jesus insisted that

  2055. the kingdom mattered

  2056. more than the family.

  2057. And the kingdom must

  2058. come first.

  2059. That's the same

  2060. imperative we find in

  2061. verse 12.

2062. So he says to those

  2063. who can accept

  2064. singleness, they

  2065. should accept it.

  2066. He's not saying it's

  2067. an option you should

  2068. consider.

  2069. Jesus is saying if

  2070. you can accept

  2071. depriving yourself of

  2072. marriage to serve

  2073. Jesus, then you

  2074. should.

  2075. So it makes perfect

  2076. sense that some

  2077. will choose singleness

2078. for the sake of the

  2079. kingdom over marriage.

  2080. It's not far-fetched,

  2081. I don't think, to say

2082. that when it comes to

  2083. being devoted to the

  2084. kingdom, singleness is

  2085. better.

  2086. So let me summarize

  2087. everything I've been

  2088. saying at my fifth

  2089. point, the kingdom of

  2090. God.

  2091. What does Matthew 19

  2092. tell us about living

  2093. life in Christ's

  2094. kingdom?

  2095. About following Christ

  2096. Christ as king?

  2097. So firstly, the

  2098. kingdom gives you a

  2099. reason to stay

  2100. married.

  2101. Who was it that

  2102. made them male and

  2103. female in the

  2104. beginning?

  2105. It was God the

  2106. king.

  2107. Who decreed in the

  2108. beginning that a man

  2109. will leave his father

2110. and his mother and be

2111. united to his wife and

2112. the two will become one

  2113. flesh?

  2114. God the king.

2115. Who is it that really

  2116. joins two people together

  2117. when they get married?

  2118. It's God the king.

2119. Who was it that said

  2120. what God has joined

  2121. together, let no one

  2122. separate?

  2123. It was Jesus Christ,

  2124. God's king.

  2125. It's hard to think of a

2126. passage in the Bible that

  2127. makes the lifelong nature

  2128. of marriage so clear.

2129. So to the marriage, can I

  2130. say this?

2131. Even if you can't think of

2132. any other good reason to

2133. stay married to your spouse,

2134. here is one very compelling

  2135. reason.

2136. Do not unjoin what God

  2137. has joined.

  2138. And that's a matter of

2139. submission to God the king.

2140. But to those who are

2141. currently single, I say to

2142. you, here is a compelling

  2143. reason to stay single.

  2144. There are two reasons,

  2145. actually.

  2146. The reason that the

  2147. disciples gave because the

  2148. commitment of marriage is

  2149. so great.

2150. But there's also the reason

2151. that Jesus gave that living

2152. life as a eunuch may be the

2153. best way for you to serve

  2154. heaven's kingdom.

2155. And of course, no one will

  2156. voluntarily choose singleness

2157. for this reason unless they

  2158. are powerfully convinced that

2159. the kingdom is the ultimate

  2160. thing.

2161. No one will make this choice

2162. unless they are persuaded that

2163. marriage and sex are part of a

2164. fading world and not part of the

  2165. eternal one.

2166. No one will choose singleness

2167. for life unless they've come to

2168. believe that deep in their soul

2169. Jesus offers to all who follow

2170. him a far greater joy than

  2171. marriage can provide.

2172. Did you hear that sentence?

2173. No one will choose singleness

2174. for life unless they've come to

2175. believe deep in their soul that

2176. Jesus offers to all who follow

2177. him a far greater joy than

  2178. marriage can provide.

2179. We don't really have many models

2180. of people who've chosen singleness

2181. for the sake of the kingdom.

2182. And I wonder whether that is

2183. because we've just not thought

  2184. seriously enough about these

  2185. parts of the Bible.

  2186. I certainly know I didn't before I

  2187. got married.

2188. And I wonder if we really do

2189. struggle to believe that the

2190. kingdom of God is ultimate.

2191. Ultimate in a way that marriage

2192. is not and could never be.

2193. And I wonder if future

  2194. generations of Christians will

2195. not only ask us why were there so

  2196. many divorces amongst Christians

2197. but why there were so few that

  2198. chose intentional singleness for

  2199. Jesus.

2200. Jesus' own intentional singleness for

2201. the kingdom took him to the cross.

2202. He spent his single life in order

2203. that the kingdom of God might

2204. welcome people like you and me.

2205. Jesus does not ask anything of us

2206. that he has not already done for us.

2207. Jesus does not ask anything of us

2208. that he has not already done for us.

2209. And so if you are single here

2210. tonight this evening, Jesus looks

  2211. you in the eye.

2212. Jesus looks you in the eye

2213. and he asks whether you would be

2214. willing to follow in his single

2215. footsteps for the sake of the

  2216. kingdom.

2217. As I wrap up, finally, fidelity to

  2218. the king's words.

2219. It's ultimately the core issue in the

  2220. kingdom of God.

2221. In a very significant way,

2222. God's kingship is exercised through

  2223. his words.

2224. He rules us by speaking to us.

2225. And to live in the kingdom of God is

2226. to hear his words and obey.

2227. It is to hear words from Genesis 2

2228. like the ones we heard last week

2229. that Jesus quotes here and to think

2230. very deeply how our lives conform to

  2231. those words.

2232. It's to hear the words that come from

2233. the lips of King Jesus himself and

2234. reorient our thinking and our feeling

2235. and our living around those words.

2236. And so tonight we've heard these

2237. words from Jesus that marriage is an

  2238. act of God.

2239. That for better, for worse, we're

2240. never to unjoin what God has joined.

2241. And we've heard a word of invitation

2242. from Jesus to consider singleness for

2243. the sake of the kingdom.

2244. And that invitation comes with a very

2245. provoking challenge in verse 12,

  2246. isn't it?

2247. He says the one who can accept this

  2248. should.

2249. So the question I finish tonight with

  2250. is will you listen?

2251. Will you be faithful to the king's

  2252. words?

2253. Of course, because of the road Christ

2254. walked for us, we know forgiveness.

2255. Forgiveness for all our failures.

2256. And we have the strength of his Holy

2257. Spirit to help us in our obedience.

2258. But the key challenge remains.

2259. Will your life be marked by fidelity

  2260. to his words?

2261. If you were to flip back to Matthew 17,

2262. you would come to the Transfiguration.

2263. You'd read the story where Jesus is

2264. seen at the top of the mountain with

  2265. Moses and Elijah.

2266. And God's voice thunders down from

  2267. heaven.

2268. This is my son, whom I love.

2269. With him, I'm well pleased.

  2270. Listen to him.

2271. And in that moment, God calls on us to

2272. recognize Jesus as the greatest voice of

  2273. human history.

2274. He is the one to listen to, even if we

2275. listen to no one else.

2276. He is the one who tells us what God

  2277. says.

2278. He is the one who tells us what we

  2279. desperately need to hear.

2280. There is nothing more sensible in the

  2281. world than doing that.

2282. He knows you better than you know

  2283. yourself.

2284. Hearing and obeying him is a great act

  2285. of trust.

2286. And so I'm not pretending for a

2287. moment tonight that it's easy.

  2288. But he loves us.

2289. And everything he tells you, he tells

  2290. you for your good.

2291. He's the most trustworthy person there

  2292. is.

2293. He is the good shepherd.

2294. And so let me ask you, amidst all the

2295. voices you're hearing in your life, are

2296. you hearing Jesus more loudly and more

  2297. clearly than any other?

2298. And does your life reflect that his

2299. voice is the greatest voice in human

  2300. history?

2301. And so I want to urge you tonight to

  2302. listen to him.

2303. And then with humble honesty before God,

2304. accept his word and be faithful to it.

2305. God says, this is my son whom I love,

2306. with whom I'm well pleased.

  2307. Listen to him.

  2308. Let's pray.

  2309. Let's pray.

  2310. Thank you.
