  1. Shall we just briefly pray?

  2. Father, we do pray that you would give us receptive hearts, make us good soil.

  3. ! This morning we pray as we hear your word.

  4. ! Help us to respond to your word in the way that Jesus expected people to respond to his words,

  5. with repentance and with faith, with obedience.

  6. We ask this in Jesus' name. Amen.

  7. Well, it's lovely to be here, and thank you for those words of introduction, Paul.

  8. I have to tell you that I haven't really preached to a congregation like this anyway for about 18 months.

  9. So I'm a bit out of practice, so I hope you'll bear that in mind.

  10. And I really feel dependent upon God this morning.

  11. And I hope that you'll pray for me, and I hope that you'll pray for our church in Kendall.

  12. We're actually meeting in the town hall this morning.

  13. Since lockdown, we've been meeting as two congregations in our building, one at 9.30 and one at 11.15.

  14. And both congregations are growing.

  15. And we'd love to continue to meet together as one congregation like we used to before lockdown.

  16. And one possible solution to this is to meet sometimes at least, even every week possibly,

  17. in the town hall in Kendall, which is the only place we can think of that's any bigger than our church building.

  18. So they're meeting there this morning.

  19. So please pray for guidance for the elders that they'll make the right decision about that.

  20. Okay, I want to speak this morning about this really important parable.

  21. It's an important parable because it occurs in all three of the synoptic gospels, Matthew, Mark, and Luke.

  22. And it's one of my favorite parables.

  23. I love these parables about sowing and reaping.

  24. It's a picture that Jesus often used in his ministry.

  25. And it's about a sower.

  26. And we were talking about this in Sunday school this morning.

  27. The boys and girls will remember it.

  28. It's about a sower who sows his seed.

  29. And in those days, they didn't have nice cultivated fields like we do.

  30. Well, maybe you don't in the evening.

  31. I don't know.

  32. But we have nice cultivated fields in the Lake District.

  33. And nearly all the seed that's sown grows well.

  34. But there they would scatter the seed.

  35. And some of the seed would fall on the path.

  36. Some of the seed would fall in shallow soil where there wasn't much depth of soil.

  37. And some of the seed would fall amongst the thistles and the thorns.

  38. And it would get choked.

  39. And it wouldn't bring forth fruit.

  40. And some seed would fall on really good, fertile soil and bring forth fruit.

  41. So, I think that this parable has two ways, two applications, two ways we can think about it.

  42. And the first is that it's an encouragement to preachers.

  43. It's an encouragement to those who proclaim God's kingdom, who preach God's word.

  44. And the second, and the one I want to particularly stress this morning, in a little while,

  45. is there is a warning to those who hear the message of the kingdom, to those who hear the word of God.

  46. So, sowing the seed is a bit like preaching the word, proclaiming God's word.

  47. And Jesus was the great sower.

  48. And he began to preach.

  49. You can read about this in Mark chapter 1.

    Mark 1 chapter mention

  50. And he began to preach.

  51. And his message, right at the beginning, was the time has come.

  52. The time that God's people have been waiting for for so long, all through the Old Testament period.

  53. God's kingdom.

  54. That time has come.

  55. God's kingdom.

  56. The king is here.

  57. So, repent and believe the good news.

  58. And that's the response he wanted.

  59. He wanted people to repent, which means to turn from everything that's wrong,

  60. everything that God doesn't like, everything that isn't like Jesus.

  61. He wants us to repent.

  62. And he wants us to believe the good news.

  63. I'm going to say more about that this evening.

  64. We're going to be looking at that this evening in more detail.

  65. What it means to repent and believe.

  66. So, that was Jesus' message.

  67. That's the response that he wanted from the crowd.

  68. Like this crowd gathered on the beach by the Sea of Galilee when he first preached this parable.

  69. The response he wanted was repentance and faith in himself.

  70. And the parable shows us the different kinds of responses that were in that crowd.

  71. And I've got no doubt at all that in this congregation this morning,

  72. all four of these responses to God's word will be here.

  73. They will be present this morning as I'm preaching.

  74. And you need to ask yourself, what kind of soil am I?

  75. How am I responding to Jesus?

  76. How am I responding to his word?

  77. What kind of soil am I?

  78. So, as I've said, this is an encouragement, first of all, to proclaim,

  79. an encouragement to those who preach the kingdom of God, who preach God's word.

  80. And Jesus wanted this response of repentance and faith.

  81. What response did Jesus, the great sower, get from the crowd?

  82. Well, if you read through Mark, you get to chapter 2.

  83. As early as chapter 2, you find that there's opposition.

  84. There's opposition from the scribes and the Pharisees to Jesus and his message.

  85. By the time you get to chapter 3, they're plotting to kill him.

  86. Chapter 3, beginning of chapter 3, they're plotting to kill him.

  87. By the time you get further on in chapter 3,

  88. they're saying that he's possessed by Beelzebul, who was an evil spirit.

  89. Later on after that, Jesus' own family come and try to stop him preaching.

  90. They're embarrassed by it.

  91. He goes to the synagogue at Nazareth, his hometown, and he preaches there.

  92. And the response is, this is just the carpenter, the carpenter's son.

  93. We know his mother.

  94. We know his brothers.

  95. We know his sister.

  96. And they were offended by it.

  97. So, Jesus preached God's word.

  98. Jesus preached the kingdom.

  99. He wanted repentance.

  100. And he wanted faith.

  101. And what did he get?

  102. He got all kinds of responses.

  103. He got a negative response, as we've just seen.

  104. He got a shallow response from the crowd.

  105. They followed him.

  106. As long as he was performing miracles, the crowd followed him.

  107. But he didn't last for very long.

  108. And then, very, very sadly, he would preach the word.

  109. And some people would claim to have become disciples.

  110. And they would last a few months, a few weeks, a few months, maybe a year or two.

  111. And after that, they would stop following.

  112. I was reading earlier this week in John chapter 6.

    John 6 chapter mention

  113. John chapter 6 starts with 5,000 people being fed by Jesus in the wilderness.

    John 6 chapter mention

  114. He then goes on to the synagogue at Capernaum.

  115. There's a crowd in the synagogue.

  116. He's preaching there.

  117. And after the sermon in the synagogue, in John chapter 6, verse 66, it says that many, many of his disciples, that's the word that's used, many of his disciples no longer followed him.

    John 6:66

  118. Now, Jesus got all those responses that I've just been going through with you.

  119. And if Jesus, and he was the greatest preacher ever, he was by far the greatest ever preacher.

  120. No one ever spoke like Jesus did.

  121. No one ever spoke like this man.

  122. He was the spirit-filled preacher.

  123. And when Jesus preached, those are the responses he got.

  124. He got the hard response.

  125. Some people, no impression at all.

  126. He got the shallow response.

  127. Some people followed him for a bit.

  128. The crowd.

  129. He got the overcrowded response.

  130. They claimed to be disciples, but other things came in and became more important than Jesus.

  131. And Jesus became less and less important.

  132. And they gave it all up.

  133. The word the Bible uses for that is apostasy.

  134. They apostatized.

  135. They gave up the faith that they once professed.

  136. And some seed fell on good soil.

  137. That's the good news.

  138. Not all the seed was lost.

  139. Some of it fell on good soil.

  140. Now, if Jesus got the response like that.

  141. If those were the responses to God's word that Jesus got.

  142. The greatest preacher who ever lived.

  143. Then, it's the kind of response that we should expect as well.

  144. And I just want to encourage preachers this morning to keep on preaching.

  145. And not to think that just because they're getting these different kinds of responses.

  146. They're not preaching properly.

  147. Jesus was the greatest preacher ever.

  148. And this is the kind of response or non-response that he got.

  149. Well, this is how people are going to respond to God's word.

  150. But keep on preaching.

  151. Because there's going to be some seed that falls on good soil.

  152. And there's going to be seed that's fertile.

  153. There's going to be ground that's fertile.

  154. And the seed is going to sprout in that ground.

  155. And there's going to be a harvest.

  156. And it's not just going to be a little harvest.

  157. There's another parable in Mark chapter 4 about the mustard seed.

    Mark 4 chapter mention

  158. Which is a tiny little seed.

  159. And yet, it grows into a big garden shrub.

  160. In which the birds of the air can roost at night time.

  161. Build their nests and so on.

  162. And that's Jesus' picture of the growth of the kingdom.

  163. And it is growing.

  164. It's growing all over the world.

  165. It's wonderful to hear about the work here amongst the Japanese people.

  166. It's wonderful to see people from other countries as well.

  167. It's the same in Kendall.

  168. I mean, nobody comes to Kendall from abroad.

  169. But we're getting more and more Eastern Europeans in our congregation.

  170. We're getting people from Russia.

  171. We're getting people from the Ukraine.

  172. We're getting people from Poland, Romania.

  173. Coming to church on Sunday.

  174. It's wonderful what God is doing in this world.

  175. There is going to be a harvest.

  176. There is a harvest.

  177. It's coming.

  178. It's developing even now as we speak.

  179. Yes, there are terrible, terribly hard places like Britain.

  180. Really, really hard ground.

  181. But some of the seed will always fall on good soil.

  182. So keep preaching.

  183. You're going to get exactly the same kind of response that Jesus got.

  184. There are going to be people who oppose you.

  185. There are going to be people who reject what you say.

  186. We're not going to listen to you.

  187. There are going to be people who you're quite encouraged about.

  188. And then you're terribly disappointed by.

  189. Your heart breaks because they walk out on Jesus.

  190. They walk out on the church.

  191. You don't see them again.

  192. They give it all up.

  193. It's going to happen.

  194. It happened to Jesus, as we've just seen.

  195. And it's going to happen to you.

  196. But don't give up.

  197. Keep on sowing that seed.

  198. It's the only way that God's kingdom will grow.

  199. Through the preaching of God's word.

  200. So if you stop preaching, that kingdom won't grow.

  201. And if you preach it, will.

  202. So keep on preaching.

  203. That's my first message for this morning.

  204. Okay?

  205. Have you got that?

  206. Good, good, great.

  207. So that's the first point.

  208. There's only two points.

  209. Second point, this is an encouragement.

  210. This is a warning to those who hear the message of God's kingdom.

  211. The point of the parable of the sower is there in verse 9.

  212. If you look at verse 9.

  213. Jesus said,

  214. He who has ears to hear, let him hear.

  215. This is a parable about hearing the word of God.

  216. Now, I've just been explaining that when Jesus preached,

  217. he expected repentance and faith,

  218. or he wanted repentance and faith,

  219. leading to a life of obedience.

  220. And yet, he warns us here that there are those who hear his words

  221. who will never understand it.

  222. That's in verse 12.

  223. People who hear and who never understand.

  224. That doesn't mean they don't understand it with their minds.

  225. They understand it with their minds,

  226. but they don't understand it in the sense that they don't stand under it.

  227. That's what the word understand means here.

  228. They don't stand under what they hear.

  229. You can hear the word of Jesus without really hearing it.

  230. And this is the message of this parable.

  231. It's possible to hear the words of Jesus,

  232. and it's possible to hear the words that's preached here every week,

  233. to be here,

  234. and for the sound to impinge upon our eardrums,

  235. and even into our brains,

  236. but never to really hear

  237. what's being said.

  238. Never to stand under it.

  239. Never to understand it.

  240. Never to understand it.

  241. To stand under it.

  242. And these different soils represent different ways

  243. in which we can hear without hearing.

  244. When Jesus preached,

  245. he expected us to hear and to heed,

  246. to listen to what he was saying,

  247. and to act on what we heard.

  248. In the Second World War,

  249. there was a lot of bombing of cities

  250. in this country,

  251. in Germany,

  252. in Japan.

  253. Bombing of cities.

  254. And there were air raid warnings.

  255. The siren would go off.

  256. And people,

  257. when they heard that siren,

  258. they wouldn't just stand there

  259. or sit there.

  260. They'd find the nearest

  261. air raid shelter.

  262. If they were in London,

  263. some of them would go down

  264. into the tube station

  265. for the night.

  266. They didn't just say,

  267. ah, yeah,

  268. an air raid shelter.

  269. They didn't just say,

  270. ah,

  271. an air raid.

  272. They would find a shelter.

  273. That's when they really heard

  274. the warning,

  275. the siren.

  276. They would find a shelter.

  277. They'd do something about it.

  278. They would respond.

  279. And,

  280. there may have been people,

  281. I'm sure there were,

  282. who heard the siren

  283. and they thought,

  284. well,

  285. I've heard that before.

  286. I won't bother to do anything

  287. about that this time.

  288. Nothing much happened last time.

  289. And they don't do anything about it

  290. or they didn't do anything about it.

  291. And the result was disaster for them.

  292. You should listen to Jesus

  293. like people listened to air raid warnings

  294. during the Second World War.

  295. When Jesus speaks,

  296. you should really listen.

  297. You must listen to Jesus.

  298. You know,

  299. there's a verse in Chapter 6

  300. of Mark

  301. about Herod,

  302. King Herod.

  303. And,

  304. he had

  305. John the Baptist

  306. in prison.

  307. And,

  308. he was very reluctant

  309. to execute

  310. John the Baptist.

  311. Why?

  312. Well,

  313. Mark says,

  314. he liked

  315. to listen

  316. to John the Baptist.

  317. King Herod

  318. liked

  319. to listen

  320. to John the Baptist.

  321. He liked

  322. his sermon.

  323. He liked

  324. his preaching.

  325. I don't know

  326. what he liked

  327. about them.

  328. But,

  329. there was something

  330. about John the Baptist's

  331. sermons

  332. that attracted

  333. King Herod.

  334. But,

  335. he never

  336. really

  337. listened.

  338. And,

  339. when he came to it,

  340. when he had to choose

  341. between

  342. his wife,

  343. his wife's will,

  344. and

  345. John the Baptist,

  346. he chose

  347. to obey

  348. his wife.

  349. But,

  350. he liked

  351. to listen

  352. to Jesus.

  353. And,

  354. Jesus

  355. ends his

  356. sermon on the

  357. mount

  358. with a

  359. parable

  360. about two

  361. men,

  362. a foolish

  363. man

  364. and a wise

  365. man.

  366. And,

  367. the wise

  368. man builds

  369. his house

  370. on a rock.

  371. And,

  372. the rain

  373. comes,

  374. and the floods

  375. ascend.

  376. And,

  377. the wind

  378. blows

  379. against the

  380. house he

  381. builds,

  382. but it's

  383. built on a

  384. rock,

  385. so it

  386. stands,

  387. it's secure.

  388. there's a

  389. foolish man,

  390. he builds

  391. his house

  392. on sand,

  393. and the

  394. same winds

  395. blow,

  396. and the

  397. same rain

  398. falls,

  399. and the

  400. same floods

  401. come,

  402. and his

  403. house

  404. falls

  405. down.

  406. Some of you

  407. children probably

  408. know a song

  409. about that.

  410. The wise man

  411. built his

  412. house upon a

  413. rock,

  414. the foolish

  415. man built

  416. his house

  417. upon the

  418. sand,

  419. and the rain

  420. came,

  421. and the floods

  422. came,

  423. and the

  424. house on

  425. the sand

  426. fell flat.

  427. You've heard

  428. that one.

  429. Is it just me?

  430. You do think

  431. it sometimes,

  432. yes.

  433. And,

  434. Jesus said,

  435. the foolish

  436. man is a

  437. man who

  438. listens to

  439. his word,

  440. who hears

  441. his word,

  442. and doesn't

  443. do anything

  444. about it.

  445. It's possible

  446. to hear the

  447. words of

  448. Jesus,

  449. and not do

  450. anything

  451. about it.

  452. James says

  453. in his

  454. letter,

  455. that we

  456. should be

  457. doers of

  458. the word,

  459. not hearers

  460. only,

  461. and if that

  462. isn't true

  463. of us,

  464. if we just

  465. hear the

  466. word,

  467. and don't

  468. do it,

  469. James says

  470. we are

  471. deceiving

  472. ourselves.

  473. We're

  474. actually

  475. deceiving

  476. ourselves.

  477. We may

  478. be good

  479. attenders

  480. of church,

  481. we may

  482. listen to

  483. good

  484. sermon,

  485. but if we

  486. don't actually

  487. do anything,

  488. James says,

  489. we are

  490. deceiving

  491. ourselves.

  492. Jesus took

  493. three of his

  494. disciples onto

  495. a mountain,

  496. and on that

  497. mountain he

  498. was transfigured

  499. before them.

  500. His appearance

  501. changed.

  502. They saw a

  503. glimpse of his

  504. future glory,

  505. and a cloud

  506. came, and he

  507. was joined

  508. by Elijah,

  509. the prophet,

  510. and by Moses,

  511. the lawgiver,

  512. two representatives

  513. of the Old

  514. Testament, the

  515. law and the

  516. prophet.

  517. Moses and

  518. Elijah, the

  519. Old Testament,

  520. the law and

  521. the prophet.

  522. Peter said,

  523. let's build

  524. three huts,

  525. or dens,

  526. you would call

  527. them boys and

  528. girls, let's

  529. build three

  530. dens.

  531. One for

  532. Jesus, one

  533. for Abraham,

  534. and one for

  535. Isaac.

  536. And there

  537. was a voice

  538. from heaven

  539. that Moses

  540. and Elijah

  541. disappeared.

  542. And there

  543. was a voice

  544. from heaven,

  545. and the

  546. voice from

  547. heaven said,

  548. this is my

  549. son whom I

  550. love.

  551. Listen.

  552. Listen to

  553. him.

  554. You must

  555. listen to

  556. Jesus.

  557. And if you

  558. hear sermons

  559. and even read

  560. the gospel and

  561. don't do anything

  562. about it,

  563. you are

  564. deceiving

  565. yourselves.

  566. so you

  567. must listen

  568. to Jesus.

  569. And these

  570. four soils

  571. are different

  572. ways in

  573. which we

  574. can listen

  575. or not

  576. listen to

  577. Jesus.

  578. I'm dealing

  579. particularly with

  580. the first

  581. three.

  582. This morning

  583. and then this

  584. evening I want

  585. to look at the

  586. last one, the

  587. good soil, in

  588. more detail.

  589. Some of the

  590. seed falls on

  591. the footpath,

  592. on the path,

  593. behind the

  594. soil, and

  595. it's trodden

  596. underfoot.

  597. Or it's

  598. gobbled up

  599. immediately by

  600. the birds.

  601. And these

  602. are people who

  603. hear the

  604. word of God

  605. and it

  606. makes no

  607. real impression

  608. on them

  609. at all.

  610. They don't

  611. stand under

  612. it.

  613. They may

  614. reject it.

  615. They may

  616. say they

  617. don't believe

  618. it.

  619. They're

  620. hostile to

  621. it sometimes.

  622. but they

  623. may not be

  624. hostile to

  625. it.

  626. They may

  627. actually, in

  628. a sense,

  629. believe it,

  630. i.e.

  631. believe that

  632. it's true.

  633. But they

  634. don't really

  635. listen.

  636. They're just

  637. sermon

  638. tasters.

  639. It's

  640. possible to

  641. be a

  642. sermon

  643. taster.

  644. It's

  645. possible to

  646. get used

  647. to hearing

  648. sermons.

  649. You may

  650. even like

  651. a good

  652. preacher.

  653. You may

  654. be a

  655. connoisseur

  656. of sermon.

  657. You may

  658. be able to

  659. give preachers

  660. points.

  661. Eight out

  662. of ten for

  663. content.

  664. Seven out

  665. of ten for

  666. presentation.

  667. And go

  668. away and

  669. not do a

  670. thing about

  671. what you've

  672. heard.

  673. You're just

  674. a sermon

  675. taster.

  676. I think

  677. this is a

  678. real danger

  679. in churches

  680. where there's

  681. an emphasis

  682. on the

  683. preaching of

  684. the word

  685. of God

  686. as there

  687. should be

  688. in every

  689. decent

  690. church.

  691. The real

  692. danger is

  693. that people

  694. get used

  695. to hearing

  696. people who

  697. handle the

  698. Bible well

  699. and familiarity

  700. breeds contempt.

  701. And they

  702. just, it's a

  703. habit they get

  704. into of

  705. listening to

  706. good sermons.

  707. And do you

  708. know what they

  709. do when they

  710. go on holiday?

  711. They go to

  712. Kesech for

  713. more sermons.

  714. Or they go

  715. to Word

  716. Alive for

  717. more sermons.

  718. They may

  719. even go to

  720. both if

  721. they're really,

  722. really keen.

  723. Their whole

  724. life is

  725. listening to

  726. sermons.

  727. How many

  728. sermons have

  729. you heard in

  730. your lifetime?

  731. How many

  732. sermons have I

  733. heard?

  734. How many

  735. sermons have I

  736. preached in

  737. my lifetime?

  738. Hundreds and

  739. hundreds, not

  740. just heard, but

  741. preached.

  742. I've actually

  743. probably preached

  744. more than I

  745. heard.

  746. And yet it's

  747. possible to

  748. do that and

  749. never really to

  750. listen to

  751. Jesus.

  752. Never really to

  753. repent.

  754. Never really to

  755. believe.

  756. And James

  757. says that if

  758. that is true of

  759. us, we are

  760. deceived people.

  761. We may be

  762. well-informed

  763. people, but we

  764. are deceived

  765. people.

  766. And I've no

  767. doubt there are

  768. people like that

  769. here this

  770. morning.

  771. This soil would

  772. have been in

  773. that crowd on

  774. the beach at

  775. Galilee, and I've

  776. no doubt that

  777. it's here this

  778. morning.

  779. There are people

  780. who are familiar

  781. with God's

  782. word.

  783. They are familiar

  784. with Jesus.

  785. They're familiar

  786. with the gospel,

  787. but it has never

  788. actually made much

  789. of a difference

  790. to their lives.

  791. They're not

  792. living lives of

  793. repentance,

  794. turning from

  795. everything that

  796. is against what

  797. Jesus is like,

  798. or what Jesus

  799. taught.

  800. And lives of

  801. faith and trust

  802. in him, and

  803. humble obedience

  804. to him, out of

  805. love for what

  806. he's done for

  807. us.

  808. I wonder if

  809. there's anybody

  810. like that here

  811. this morning.

  812. I'm sure there

  813. is people like

  814. that here this

  815. morning.

  816. And it's Satan,

  817. you know, who

  818. snatches the word

  819. away.

  820. it's the

  821. activity of

  822. Satan that

  823. causes us to

  824. hear God's

  825. word and not

  826. do anything

  827. about it.

  828. And then

  829. there's the

  830. shallow soil.

  831. The shallow

  832. soil is soil

  833. that's over

  834. hard rock,

  835. limestone or

  836. something.

  837. And it's

  838. only a thin

  839. layer of

  840. soil.

  841. And so the

  842. shoots emerge

  843. very quickly.

  844. And they

  845. emerge quickly

  846. because there's

  847. no depth of

  848. root underneath.

  849. there's nothing

  850. underneath.

  851. It's all

  852. surface.

  853. Nothing

  854. underneath.

  855. And then

  856. when there's a

  857. dry period,

  858. it shrivels

  859. up.

  860. It shrivels

  861. up as quickly

  862. as it shoots

  863. up.

  864. And Jesus

  865. says these are

  866. the people on

  867. whom God's

  868. word seems to

  869. make initially

  870. some impression.

  871. It says here

  872. that they

  873. receive the

  874. word with

  875. joy.

  876. They receive

  877. the word

  878. with joy.

  879. Now in the

  880. book of Acts,

  881. that word

  882. receiving,

  883. that phrase

  884. receiving the

  885. word means

  886. that they

  887. became Christian.

  888. I don't think

  889. it means that

  890. here.

  891. But in the

  892. book of Acts,

  893. they would have

  894. been welcomed

  895. into the

  896. church,

  897. they would have

  898. been baptized,

  899. they would have

  900. been welcomed

  901. into the

  902. church,

  903. they'd receive

  904. the word.

  905. And Luke

  906. says in Acts

    Acts 2 chapter mention

  907. chapter 2,

  908. those who

  909. received the

  910. word were

  911. baptized and

  912. added to

  913. the church.

  914. So these

  915. people look

  916. like Christians.

  917. They probably

  918. think they're

  919. Christians to

  920. begin with,

  921. and other

  922. people think

  923. they're Christians

  924. to begin with.

  925. And then the

  926. tests come.

  927. Then the

  928. persecution

  929. comes,

  930. that's Jesus.

  931. The difficulties,

  932. the pressures,

  933. persecution on

  934. account of the

  935. word, trouble

  936. on account of

  937. the word.

  938. So these are

  939. professing believers.

  940. But when

  941. they're

  942. persecuted,

  943. the persecution

  944. reveals that

  945. there's no

  946. depth at all.

  947. They're

  948. shallow.

  949. They're

  950. superficial.

  951. And after

  952. that promising

  953. start, they

  954. drop out.

  955. So what is

  956. one of God's

  957. purposes in

  958. persecution?

  959. Why does he

  960. allow Christians

  961. to be persecuted?

  962. We've been

  963. praying for them

  964. this morning,

  965. all over the

  966. world,

  967. increasingly.

  968. Persecution is

  969. a fact for

  970. Christians.

  971. And the

  972. New Testament

  973. says it will

  974. be.

  975. The New

  976. Testament says

  977. it's part of

  978. the package.

  979. unto us it

  980. has been

  981. given on

  982. behalf of

  983. Christ,

  984. not only to

  985. believe in

  986. him,

  987. but also to

  988. be persecuted

  989. for his

  990. sake.

  991. That's just

  992. it.

  993. It's part of

  994. the package.

  995. If you become

  996. a Christian,

  997. you're going to

  998. be persecuted.

  999. We've done

  1000. very well in

  1001. this country.

  1002. We haven't

  1003. been persecuted

  1004. properly for a

  1005. long time.

  1006. That means we

  1007. haven't been

  1008. tested.

  1009. We haven't been

  1010. tested by

  1011. persecution.

  1012. one of the

  1013. reasons that

  1014. God allows

  1015. his church to

  1016. be persecuted

  1017. is to test

  1018. the depth

  1019. of their

  1020. faith in

  1021. Jesus,

  1022. the reality

  1023. of their

  1024. faith in

  1025. Jesus.

  1026. Now, the

  1027. problem with

  1028. becoming a

  1029. Christian in

  1030. Britain is

  1031. that it

  1032. actually starts

  1033. you off,

  1034. gets you

  1035. started on

  1036. quite a nice

  1037. life really,

  1038. doesn't it?

  1039. And church is

  1040. quite a nice

  1041. place, isn't it?

  1042. And you

  1043. quite like

  1044. coming here,

  1045. don't you?

  1046. It's quite a

  1047. nice place to

  1048. come on a

  1049. Sunday morning.

  1050. Nice people.

  1051. Nice people from

  1052. all over the

  1053. world.

  1054. I bet the

  1055. coffee,

  1056. Josh said that.

  1057. I should

  1058. imagine that

  1059. the coffee is

  1060. quite good as

  1061. well.

  1062. I'm not even

  1063. sure that you

  1064. have coffee on

  1065. the Sunday

  1066. morning.

  1067. I'm sure the

  1068. coffee is good

  1069. as well.

  1070. It's a nice

  1071. place to be.

  1072. Nice people.

  1073. And you

  1074. become part of

  1075. a kind of

  1076. evangelical

  1077. subculture

  1078. enjoyable

  1079. meetings,

  1080. somewhere to

  1081. go.

  1082. So our

  1083. life after

  1084. conversion is

  1085. probably in

  1086. some ways

  1087. better than

  1088. it was before.

  1089. Easier than

  1090. it was before.

  1091. And it's

  1092. never been

  1093. tested.

  1094. Will we

  1095. still choose

  1096. Jesus when

  1097. the storm

  1098. comes?

  1099. Will our

  1100. house stand

  1101. when the

  1102. storm comes?

  1103. You know,

  1104. when I was

  1105. a child,

  1106. my dad

  1107. and mum

  1108. used to

  1109. like listening

  1110. to George

  1111. Beverly

  1112. Shea,

  1113. America's

  1114. beloved gospel

  1115. singer.

  1116. He died

  1117. two or three

  1118. years ago,

  1119. aged about

  1120. 103.

  1121. I think he

  1122. was still

  1123. singing.

  1124. And he

  1125. sang a

  1126. hymn

  1127. called,

  1128. I'd

  1129. Rather Have

  1130. Jesus

  1131. Than

  1132. Silver or

  1133. Gold.

  1134. I'd

  1135. rather be

  1136. his than

  1137. have

  1138. riches

  1139. untold.

  1140. I'd

  1141. rather have

  1142. Jesus

  1143. than

  1144. houses

  1145. or

  1146. lands.

  1147. I'd

  1148. rather be

  1149. led by

  1150. his nail

  1151. pierced

  1152. hands

  1153. than to

  1154. be the

  1155. king of

  1156. a vast

  1157. domain

  1158. and be

  1159. held in

  1160. sin's

  1161. dread sway.

  1162. I'd

  1163. rather have

  1164. Jesus

  1165. than

  1166. anything

  1167. this

  1168. world

  1169. affords

  1170. today.

  1171. great.

  1172. Great.

  1173. Great.

  1174. But let

  1175. me ask you

  1176. a question.

  1177. How do

  1178. you know?

  1179. How do

  1180. you know?

  1181. If you've

  1182. got Jesus

  1183. and silver

  1184. and gold,

  1185. if you've

  1186. got Jesus

  1187. and houses

  1188. and land,

  1189. if you've

  1190. got Jesus

  1191. and the

  1192. wolves

  1193. applaud,

  1194. how do

  1195. you actually

  1196. know that

  1197. you'd rather

  1198. have Jesus

  1199. than any

  1200. of those

  1201. other things?

  1202. Unless

  1203. the point

  1204. comes,

  1205. the time

  1206. comes,

  1207. when you

  1208. have to

  1209. choose

  1210. between

  1211. the two.

  1212. And all

  1213. over the

  1214. world today

  1215. there are

  1216. Christians

  1217. who are

  1218. having to

  1219. choose

  1220. between

  1221. the two.

  1222. If you

  1223. become a

  1224. Christian

  1225. in,

  1226. let's say,

  1227. Egypt

  1228. or Pakistan,

  1229. just your

  1230. ordinary big

  1231. Muslim

  1232. country,

  1233. you'll be

  1234. treated as

  1235. a second

  1236. class citizen.

  1237. You will

  1238. almost certainly

  1239. not get a

  1240. decent job.

  1241. You may

  1242. end up

  1243. working on

  1244. the brick

  1245. kilns in

  1246. Pakistan for

  1247. the rest of

  1248. your life.

  1249. And you'll

  1250. never get

  1251. out of them.

  1252. Would you

  1253. be happy

  1254. with that?

  1255. If you

  1256. had to

  1257. choose either

  1258. that or

  1259. Jesus Christ?

  1260. What would

  1261. you choose?

  1262. Your children

  1263. were probably

  1264. not going

  1265. to university.

  1266. You'd never

  1267. have been to

  1268. university

  1269. yourself.

  1270. There are

  1271. increasingly,

  1272. an increasing

  1273. number of

  1274. places in

  1275. the world

  1276. today where

  1277. you have to

  1278. choose between

  1279. Christ and

  1280. prosperity.

  1281. Christ and

  1282. your freedom.

  1283. Christ and

  1284. your popularity.

  1285. And

  1286. increasingly,

  1287. even, as in

  1288. Nigeria, as we've

  1289. been praying this

  1290. morning, Christ

  1291. and life

  1292. itself.

  1293. Will you

  1294. choose

  1295. Jesus?

  1296. One reason

  1297. why God

  1298. allows

  1299. persecution

  1300. like that

  1301. is as a

  1302. test to

  1303. know whether

  1304. you really

  1305. would rather

  1306. have Jesus

  1307. than anything

  1308. this world

  1309. affords

  1310. today.

  1311. That's why

  1312. God allows

  1313. persecution.

  1314. So there's the

  1315. shallow soil.

  1316. Then there's the

  1317. overcrowded soil.

  1318. soil.

  1319. And this

  1320. seems even

  1321. more promising

  1322. than the

  1323. shallow soil.

  1324. It seems to

  1325. take root.

  1326. It lasts

  1327. longer than

  1328. the seed that

  1329. has been

  1330. sown in that

  1331. thin soil.

  1332. It begins to

  1333. grow, seems to

  1334. grow, and

  1335. gradually the

  1336. thorns and the

  1337. thistles that

  1338. share the soil

  1339. take over and

  1340. they choke

  1341. the seed.

  1342. And Jesus

  1343. identifies these

  1344. thorns and

  1345. thistles with

  1346. the worries or

  1347. the anxieties of

  1348. this life and

  1349. he mentions this

  1350. specifically, the

  1351. deceitfulness of

  1352. wealth, the

  1353. deceitfulness of

  1354. riches.

  1355. So it's the

  1356. distractions linked

  1357. with wealth and

  1358. success.

  1359. And the

  1360. anxieties, the

  1361. worries that

  1362. wealth, pursuing

  1363. wealth and

  1364. success bring.

  1365. If you read

  1366. chapter 6 of

  1367. Matthew in the

  1368. Sermon on the

  1369. Mount, there's a

  1370. link between

  1371. wealth and

  1372. worry, wealth

  1373. and anxiety.

  1374. Jesus talks about

  1375. laying treasure up

  1376. in heaven, not

  1377. on earth.

  1378. And then he

  1379. talks about people

  1380. who are crippled

  1381. by anxiety, by

  1382. worry, about what

  1383. to eat and what

  1384. to drink and what

  1385. to wear.

  1386. And the

  1387. pursuit of

  1388. wealth, and

  1389. Jesus calls it

  1390. the deceitfulness,

  1391. the deceitfulness

  1392. of wealth, is

  1393. one of the

  1394. thorns that

  1395. chokes the

  1396. seed.

  1397. Spurgeon is

  1398. supposed to have

  1399. said this.

  1400. I hope he did

  1401. say it.

  1402. I sometimes

  1403. think that

  1404. Spurgeon is a

  1405. bit like

  1406. Churchill.

  1407. he's always

  1408. been quoted

  1409. as having

  1410. said this.

  1411. And I can't

  1412. believe that he

  1413. said all these

  1414. things that he's

  1415. supposed to have

  1416. said.

  1417. But he's

  1418. supposed to have

  1419. said,

  1420. persecution has

  1421. slain its

  1422. thousands.

  1423. Prosperity has

  1424. slain its tens

  1425. of thousands.

  1426. been

  1427. done.

  1428. And I think I

  1429. know more

  1430. people who

  1431. have given

  1432. up the

  1433. Christian faith

  1434. that they

  1435. once professed

  1436. because of

  1437. prosperity

  1438. than because of

  1439. any persecution

  1440. that has

  1441. threatened them.

  1442. Prosperity is

  1443. as big a test

  1444. of the reality

  1445. of your faith

  1446. than

  1447. persecution.

  1448. as persecution.

  1449. We pray for

  1450. the persecuted

  1451. church and

  1452. rightly so.

  1453. Do we pray for

  1454. the prosperous

  1455. church?

  1456. Because I'm

  1457. telling you this,

  1458. there are

  1459. thousands and

  1460. thousands of

  1461. Christians who

  1462. are nowhere

  1463. today who

  1464. once professed

  1465. Christ.

  1466. Well, I'm

  1467. calling them

  1468. Christians because

  1469. they profess to

  1470. be Christians.

  1471. There are

  1472. thousands of

  1473. people today who

  1474. once professed

  1475. Christ and who

  1476. are nowhere

  1477. spiritually today

  1478. because the

  1479. pursuit of

  1480. prosperity and

  1481. success and

  1482. all the other

  1483. things that

  1484. they want in

  1485. their lives have

  1486. choked the

  1487. seed of God's

  1488. word.

  1489. It can be all

  1490. kinds of things.

  1491. The other

  1492. things can be all

  1493. kinds of things.

  1494. It can be a

  1495. relationship with

  1496. somebody.

  1497. It takes over.

  1498. It can be a

  1499. sport, a

  1500. pastime, an

  1501. activity.

  1502. I know a

  1503. number of

  1504. people.

  1505. who used to

  1506. go to

  1507. church.

  1508. I can think

  1509. of one

  1510. person in

  1511. particular in

  1512. Kendall,

  1513. actually, who

  1514. used to go

  1515. to church and

  1516. who stopped

  1517. coming to

  1518. church because

  1519. they did a

  1520. lot of

  1521. mountain running

  1522. and that sort

  1523. of thing.

  1524. And all

  1525. these runs

  1526. were on a

  1527. Sunday.

  1528. So they

  1529. would go

  1530. running instead

  1531. of going to

  1532. church.

  1533. And it

  1534. begins with

  1535. maybe one

  1536. Sunday and

  1537. then maybe

  1538. twice a month

  1539. and gradually

  1540. it takes over.

  1541. all that

  1542. running, which

  1543. is probably

  1544. just ruining

  1545. their knees

  1546. probably.

  1547. All that

  1548. running up

  1549. and down

  1550. mountains,

  1551. wonderful,

  1552. isn't it?

  1553. But it's not

  1554. as good as

  1555. Jesus, I'm

  1556. telling you.

  1557. There are

  1558. people for

  1559. whom something

  1560. is unimportant

  1561. as running,

  1562. although I

  1563. know some

  1564. of you think

  1565. it's really

  1566. important.

  1567. And your

  1568. pastor actually

  1569. did the park

  1570. run yesterday

  1571. with his

  1572. children.

  1573. So I must be

  1574. careful what I

  1575. say.

  1576. Running is

  1577. important, but

  1578. he doesn't do

  1579. it on a

  1580. Sunday.

  1581. At least I

  1582. don't think

  1583. he does.

  1584. And he

  1585. must be

  1586. careful and

  1587. you must be

  1588. careful not to

  1589. allow anything

  1590. to become more

  1591. important than

  1592. Jesus, more

  1593. important than

  1594. church in

  1595. your life.

  1596. Okay, so

  1597. there are

  1598. these people

  1599. who seem to

  1600. be doing well

  1601. and then

  1602. heartbreakingly

  1603. there comes a

  1604. time when you

  1605. don't see them

  1606. anymore.

  1607. And there'll be

  1608. people like that

  1609. in this

  1610. congregation.

  1611. Some of you

  1612. young people in

  1613. particular,

  1614. brought up in

  1615. Christian home.

  1616. You're here

  1617. now.

  1618. Will you be

  1619. here in 20,

  1620. 30 years'

  1621. time?

  1622. I hope so.

  1623. But I'm sure

  1624. that there will

  1625. be people who

  1626. hear God's

  1627. word regularly,

  1628. week by week,

  1629. from Paul here

  1630. and from

  1631. others.

  1632. And 20 or

  1633. 30 years from

  1634. now, you may

  1635. not profess to

  1636. be a Christian.

  1637. Be very, very

  1638. careful.

  1639. Jesus wants us

  1640. to hear God's

  1641. word with

  1642. repentance and

  1643. with faith.

  1644. He wants us

  1645. to be good

  1646. soil.

  1647. And the good

  1648. soil are those

  1649. who hear his

  1650. word with

  1651. repentance and

  1652. with faith.

  1653. They hear

  1654. Jesus'

  1655. words and

  1656. they realize

  1657. that they're

  1658. going in the

  1659. wrong direction

  1660. and they turn

  1661. around.

  1662. They turn

  1663. around really,

  1664. really,

  1665. in their hearts,

  1666. they turn to

  1667. Jesus.

  1668. That's what

  1669. repentance means.

  1670. and they

  1671. believe,

  1672. which means

  1673. they trust,

  1674. they depend

  1675. on,

  1676. they rely

  1677. on totally

  1678. on Jesus.

  1679. They repent

  1680. and they

  1681. believe.

  1682. And that

  1683. gives rise to

  1684. a life of

  1685. obedience to

  1686. Jesus.

  1687. If you don't

  1688. live a life of

  1689. obedience to

  1690. Jesus after

  1691. you've repented

  1692. and believed,

  1693. well, you've

  1694. stopped repenting

  1695. and you've

  1696. stopped believing.

  1697. repentance and

  1698. faith are not

  1699. something you do

  1700. just at the

  1701. beginning of the

  1702. Christian life

  1703. and say,

  1704. yeah, well,

  1705. I've done that.

  1706. That's the

  1707. repentance and

  1708. faith.

  1709. Repentance and

  1710. faith get you

  1711. started on a

  1712. life of

  1713. repentance and

  1714. faith.

  1715. And if you're

  1716. not obeying

  1717. Jesus, you've

  1718. stopped repenting

  1719. and you've

  1720. stopped believing.

  1721. Repentance and

  1722. faith.

  1723. Trusting Jesus.

  1724. Trusting that

  1725. he died for

  1726. your sins.

  1727. Trusting his

  1728. words.

  1729. Trusting his

  1730. wonderful

  1731. invitation.

  1732. Come unto me,

  1733. all you who

  1734. weary and

  1735. heavy laden,

  1736. burdened, and

  1737. I will give

  1738. you rest.

  1739. This is the

  1740. cup of the

  1741. covenant.

  1742. Shed for

  1743. many.

  1744. For the

  1745. forgiveness of

  1746. sins.

  1747. What wonderful

  1748. things Jesus

  1749. said.

  1750. It isn't all

  1751. just moral

  1752. instruction.

  1753. It's gospel.

  1754. It is

  1755. wonderful

  1756. invitation.

  1757. Wonderful

  1758. promises.

  1759. And when we

  1760. believe, we

  1761. believe the

  1762. promises of

  1763. Jesus and we

  1764. accept the

  1765. invitations of

  1766. Jesus.

  1767. And we also

  1768. heed the

  1769. warnings of

  1770. Jesus and we

  1771. follow the

  1772. teachings of

  1773. Jesus.

  1774. That's what it

  1775. means to

  1776. believe in

  1777. Jesus.

  1778. Repent and

  1779. believe.

  1780. Every person in

  1781. this congregation

  1782. fits into one of

  1783. these categories

  1784. this morning.

  1785. Hard,

  1786. shallow,

  1787. overcrowded,

  1788. or fertile.

  1789. Which one are

  1790. you?

  1791. I'll be saying

  1792. more about the

  1793. fourth category

  1794. this evening.

  1795. So I hope you'll

  1796. come along and

  1797. hear more about

  1798. repenting and

  1799. believing.

  1800. God bless you.

  1801. God bless you.

  1802. God bless you.
