  1. Well, nice to see everybody again.

  2. And Paul, I don't think, explained that I'm actually retired.

  3. ! I'm not a minister at the moment.

  4. Probably will never be again.

  5. I'm retired.

  6. I retired back in 2013.

  7. And I'm still an elder at the church there in Kendall.

  8. But we've got a slightly, well, a very younger, faster than I am,

  9. which is a great thing.

  10. So I want to carry on from where we left off this morning.

  11. Let's just pray before we do that.

  12. Heavenly Father, we thank you for this parable, this parable of the sower.

  13. We thank you for what we learned this morning about the different kinds of responses to your word,

  14. the hard response, the shallow response, and the overcrowded response,

  15. none of which bear fruit.

  16. And we pray now that as we come to the good soil, the good ground,

  17. the ground that bears fruit, the fertile soil,

  18. we pray, Lord, that you'd help us to understand your word.

  19. Speak to us by your spirit, we pray.

  20. In Jesus' name. Amen.

  21. So I want to speak tonight about two very important words.

  22. These two words should always go together.

  23. They're like hinges on the door, two hinges on the door.

  24. They're like the wings of a bird or an airplane.

  25. You need both.

  26. And you should never think of the one without thinking of the other.

  27. And they're very important words because Jesus used them at the very outset of his ministry.

  28. He began to preach in Galilee after the imprisonment of John the Baptist.

  29. And Matthew summarizes his message and Mark summarizes his message and so does Luke.

  30. And they all agree that the message of Jesus right at the beginning of his ministry,

  31. the words that sum up in some ways his ministry were these.

  32. Repent and believe the good news.

  33. Repent and believe.

  34. The time has come, he said.

  35. That means the decisive, long-promised moment

  36. that God has been preparing his people for throughout the Old Testament period for centuries.

  37. People had been, the Jewish people had been looking forward to the coming of God's kingdom.

  38. And Jesus arrived in Galilee and he said, it's here.

  39. It's come.

  40. The king has come.

  41. And the time that God's people have been waiting for has come.

  42. The kingdom of God has come near.

  43. And therefore, repent and believe the good news.

  44. In those days, kings were really important.

  45. And they had a lot of power.

  46. Royalty in those days wasn't like royalty today.

  47. Kings and queens these days don't have much power.

  48. They're just tourist attractions.

  49. And they don't have much power.

  50. But a king in New Testament times had the power of life and death.

  51. His word was law.

  52. And Jesus said, the king has come.

  53. I'm here.

  54. The Messiah, the Christ.

  55. God's anointed one.

  56. The king has come.

  57. The kingdom is here.

  58. And you prepare for the arrival of a king.

  59. My wife was telling me how when she was a little girl in Salford, which is, well, it was quite a grimy northwestern Lancashire town.

  60. I'm sure you'll forgive me for saying that, Jim.

  61. But it was.

  62. And she was telling me that when the queen visited Salford, they were actually cleaning the pavements on which she was going to walk.

  63. You prepare.

  64. And you prepare well for the coming of royalty.

  65. And Jesus is saying here, royalty is here.

  66. God's king has come.

  67. The kingdom is here.

  68. You'd better get ready.

  69. You'd better prepare.

  70. And how do you prepare for the coming of the king?

  71. You prepare for the arrival of the king by repenting and believing.

  72. You don't just shrug your shoulders when you hear these words and say, well, that's nothing to do with me.

  73. We're talking about a king with the power of life and death.

  74. And this king says to you tonight and says to me, repent and believe the good news.

  75. There are a wide range of phrases which Christians use nowadays to describe how to respond to Jesus.

  76. We talk sometimes about becoming a Christian.

  77. The New Testament, as far as I know, doesn't use that language.

  78. The New Testament never tells us to become a Christian.

  79. In fact, the word Christian only occurs three times in the New Testament.

  80. And in each case, it's clear that it was used as a nickname for believers in Jesus by pagans, by non-Christians.

  81. There's nothing wrong with talking about becoming a Christian, but that is not how the New Testament describes it.

  82. We talk sometimes, I remember I was taught as a little child in a Christian home, to ask Jesus into my heart.

  83. Well, the Apostle Paul writes to the Ephesians and prays that the Spirit would cause the Lord Jesus Christ to dwell in their hearts,

  84. as the owner-occupier of their heart, and to fill them with the knowledge of God's love.

  85. But that was written to a church.

  86. I don't think there's anything terribly wrong with telling people to ask Jesus into their hearts,

  87. but it's not the language that the New Testament uses it.

  88. We talk about making a commitment.

  89. We talk about making a decision for Christ.

  90. The New Testament doesn't use these expressions.

  91. What does the New Testament say we should do in response to Jesus?

  92. It says we should repent and we should believe.

  93. So that's what we should do.

  94. We should repent and we should believe.

  95. That's how we become a Christian.

  96. I've just used that expression myself.

  97. That's how we respond to Jesus initially.

  98. And that's how we go on responding to Jesus.

  99. We go on repenting and we go on believing.

  100. That is the response to Jesus Christ.

  101. Repent and believe.

  102. Those are the two words I want to talk about tonight.

  103. I want to talk first of all about repenting.

  104. John the Baptist prepared for the arrival of Jesus by preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sin.

  105. Jesus said unless you repent, you will perish.

  106. After his resurrection, Jesus sent out the church to the world.

  107. And he said repentance and forgiveness of sins will be preached to all nations.

  108. On the day of Pentecost, Simon Peter, after the very first ever Christian sermon, was asked by the hearers what they should do.

  109. And his response was to say repent and be baptized every one of you for the forgiveness of sins.

  110. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.

  111. The apostle Paul preaching to the philosophers at Athens.

  112. He said God now commands all people everywhere to repent.

  113. So it's pretty clear, isn't it?

  114. The response to Jesus, first of all, is to repent.

  115. So what does it mean to repent?

  116. Well, the Old Testament word means just to turn.

  117. To turn, that's it.

  118. To turn.

  119. To turn around.

  120. The New Testament word means to have a different mind altogether.

  121. A complete reorientation of your thinking.

  122. Let's just focus on that word to turn.

  123. You've got to realize that you're going in completely the wrong direction.

  124. And if you carry on going in that direction, it will end in disaster.

  125. And therefore, you turn around.

  126. I remember some years ago now, preaching at Ingleton Evangelical Church, which is 18 miles east of Kendall.

  127. I live in a lovely place.

  128. We've got the Lake District to the west and north of us.

  129. And to the east of us, we've got the Yorkshire Dales.

  130. And we're right there in the middle between the two.

  131. And I was preaching one Sunday at Ingleton Evangelical Church.

  132. So I needed to travel 18 miles east.

  133. And there's Kendall.

  134. There's Ingleton, okay?

  135. On a map of England, which I'm asking you to imagine.

  136. And between the two is the M6 motorway.

  137. And if you go north, you go to Carlisle.

  138. If you go south, you go to Lancaster and Preston and places like that.

  139. And I was worrying about a children's talk I had to give at Ingleton Evangelical Church.

  140. If only people realized the stress that they caused preachers when they asked for children's talks in their meetings.

  141. And I was stressing about this children's talk.

  142. I was going through it in my mind.

  143. And I sort of woke up and found myself driving south down the M6 towards Lancaster and Preston and eventually London and places like that.

  144. And I thought, why am I doing this?

  145. I'd just done it without thinking.

  146. It was just automatic.

  147. That's normally what I did at that particular roundabout.

  148. And I hadn't been concentrating properly.

  149. And, well, what did I do?

  150. Well, you're not actually allowed to do a U-turn on a motorway, as you probably know.

  151. And you're not allowed to reverse down the motorway either, just in case you thought that was a possible way out of the problem.

  152. I had to go, oh, maybe 10 miles further north.

  153. And then turn around at the next roundabout.

  154. Go all the way 10 miles further back.

  155. And then get on the right way to Ingleton.

  156. And I arrived during the first hymn.

  157. And the lady on the door looked extremely pleased to see me.

  158. A bit like the father in the parable of the prodigal son.

  159. She ran and fell on my neck.

  160. Well, no, she didn't, actually.

  161. I was going to say she kissed me.

  162. She didn't do that.

  163. But we had a real handshake.

  164. And she was very pleased to see me.

  165. I turned around.

  166. That's what you do when you repent.

  167. You turn around.

  168. So repentance means turning from everything that displeases Jesus.

  169. He's the king.

  170. So you turn from everything that isn't his will.

  171. Everything that he doesn't want.

  172. You stop distancing yourself from Jesus.

  173. Instead of running away from him, you run to him.

  174. You stop ignoring him.

  175. You stop disobeying him.

  176. You're sorry and ashamed at the way you behave and the way you think and the way you speak.

  177. You come to see that you're disobeying God in thought and word and deed.

  178. We're doing those things that we ought not to do.

  179. And we're not doing those things that we ought to do.

  180. And we come to see this and it burdens us.

  181. It deeply concerns us.

  182. We've not loved God with all our heart and soul and mind and strength.

  183. We've not loved our neighbor as ourself.

  184. We don't love our neighbors as we love ourselves, as God tells us to.

  185. We love ourselves.

  186. Everything we do is tainted by self-love, by pride, even the good things we do.

  187. We feel proud when we do them.

  188. We love ourselves when we do them.

  189. We even self-righteously condemn others for the sins we know we commit ourselves.

  190. And it makes us feel better about our own sins when we condemn them in other people.

  191. We're sinner.

  192. King Jesus has given his manifesto.

  193. We call it the Sermon on the Mount.

  194. It's the manifesto for the kingdom of God.

  195. I'll just take you briefly through the Sermon on the Mount.

  196. Very, very briefly through the Sermon on the Mount.

  197. I think you should read the Sermon on the Mount two or three times this week.

  198. Read it carefully.

  199. Read it prayerfully.

  200. And ask yourself what you should be repenting of.

  201. We're not poor in spirit.

  202. We're not meek and humble.

  203. We do not hunger and thirst after righteousness.

  204. We're not starving.

  205. We're not ravenous for righteousness.

  206. We're not merciful.

  207. We're much harder on other sinners than we are on ourselves.

  208. We're not forgiving.

  209. We're not pure in heart.

  210. We're not peacemakers.

  211. We don't go around trying to reconcile ourselves to people who we may have wronged or who we think have wronged us.

  212. We don't try and reconcile other people to each other.

  213. We don't seek peace and pursue it like a hound pursues a fox.

  214. We're not persecuted for Jesus' sake.

  215. I'm just going through the Beatitudes here.

  216. We're not persecuted for Jesus' sake.

  217. We're afraid to openly confess our Savior.

  218. We harbor anger and resentment in our hearts.

  219. We belittle other people with our words.

  220. We refuse to seriously seek reconciliation.

  221. Jesus told us if we go to church,

  222. He actually said if you were about to offer a sacrifice,

  223. but in New Testament times it would be if you're going to church

  224. and you realize your brother has got something against you,

  225. there's something not right between you and somebody else there,

  226. you should go.

  227. You don't wait until they come to you.

  228. You should go and be reconciled to them

  229. and then come and worship God.

  230. We don't do that.

  231. We play around with lust.

  232. We don't even behave rightly towards our spouses.

  233. We're not totally honest and truthful,

  234. so that our yes means yes and our no means no.

  235. We repay evil with evil in all kinds of different ways.

  236. We don't love our enemies.

  237. We don't pray for them.

  238. We don't pray as we should have done,

  239. and when we do pray,

  240. it's mainly about ourselves and our families

  241. and our physical needs.

  242. We don't pray with God at the center.

  243. We don't give generously to the poor.

  244. We pretend to be more godly than we really are.

  245. We're friendly to those who are friendly to us,

  246. but not particularly friendly to those who aren't friendly to us.

  247. We set our hearts on earthly success.

  248. We lay up treasure on earth instead of laying it up in heaven.

  249. Earthly success, earthly treasure occupies our thoughts all the time.

  250. It's what we get anxious about.

  251. It's what we get worried about.

  252. We condemn others.

  253. We're far more concerned about the faults and the sins of other people

  254. rather than our own sins

  255. as a way of feeling good about ourselves or better about ourselves.

  256. We're always judging others and criticizing others

  257. and gossiping about others.

  258. We don't gossip about ourselves.

  259. No, we gossip about others.

  260. We imagine that we're more righteous than they are.

  261. We do not do to others what they would like them to do to us.

  262. I've just taken you quickly through the Sermon on the Mount.

  263. Read it two or three times this week

  264. and honestly examine yourself in the light of it

  265. and repent and grieve that you are not like this.

  266. You haven't even started.

  267. And more than anything else,

  268. you want to be forgiven

  269. of all the rottenness in your heart.

  270. So you see, repentance isn't just praying the prayer

  271. or making some kind of superficial decision.

  272. it is a deep, life-changing realization

  273. that you are going completely in the wrong direction.

  274. You're not as Jesus wants you to be

  275. and you're appalled at your state of heart

  276. and you're far more concerned about the sins of others

  277. than about your own sins.

  278. Sorry, you're far more concerned about your own sins

  279. than you are about the sins of others

  280. when you've repented.

  281. What you want more than anything else

  282. is God's mercy,

  283. God's forgiveness.

  284. The best picture, of course,

  285. that I know of,

  286. of repentance in the New Testament

  287. is that lost son,

  288. so-called,

  289. that lost son

  290. who forsook his father and his father's house,

  291. left home,

  292. spent his father's inheritance,

  293. wished his father was dead,

  294. and actually told his father so.

  295. He actually said,

  296. give me my inheritance now.

  297. I can't wait for you to die.

  298. And he then took that inheritance off

  299. into a far country,

  300. spent it all in no time,

  301. according to his brother on prostitutes,

  302. amongst other things,

  303. ending up in a time of famine,

  304. longing to feed himself

  305. with the pig's food.

  306. And then he came to his senses

  307. and he turned around

  308. and he went all the way home.

  309. Father, I have sinned.

  310. His elder brother

  311. thought he didn't have much to repent of.

  312. And he resented

  313. his brother coming home

  314. and he resented even more

  315. his father throwing this party for him.

  316. And he refused to go in.

  317. And it was him

  318. who was outside the father's house,

  319. not the so-called lost son.

  320. It was the elder brother

  321. who thought he had nothing

  322. to repent of very much,

  323. who turned out to be

  324. the lost son

  325. in that parable.

  326. So that's what it means to repent.

  327. It means to turn around.

  328. But Jesus

  329. comes to this other word,

  330. believe.

  331. Believe the good news.

  332. Or it says in the version

  333. that you have,

  334. believe the gospel,

  335. which means great news,

  336. fantastic news.

  337. So he summons us

  338. to repent

  339. and then he tells us

  340. to believe the good news.

  341. Well, what's the good news?

  342. Not good news so far.

  343. So far,

  344. all we've heard is

  345. that we're just

  346. sinners who need mercy.

  347. What's the good news?

  348. Well,

  349. the good news

  350. is that God's kingdom

  351. is for the repentant.

  352. It is for

  353. repentant

  354. rebels.

  355. It is for people

  356. who repent.

  357. That's the good news.

  358. This king,

  359. and he is a king,

  360. never forget that.

  361. He is also called

  362. the friend of sinners.

  363. He is the friend

  364. of sinners.

  365. He is on the side

  366. of sinners.

  367. He came into this world

  368. to save,

  369. rescue

  370. sinners.

  371. He calls sinners

  372. to repentance.

  373. He didn't come

  374. to call the righteous.

  375. That's good news,

  376. isn't it?

  377. Because I'm not righteous.

  378. He didn't come

  379. to call the righteous.

  380. He came

  381. to call

  382. the sinners.

  383. He's like a doctor.

  384. Doctors aren't here

  385. for the healthy.

  386. Doctors are here

  387. for the sick.

  388. And Jesus says,

  389. it's the sick

  390. who need a doctor.

  391. And I'm a doctor

  392. and I've come

  393. for the sick.

  394. I've come for the sinners.

  395. sinners.

  396. That's the good news.

  397. He came

  398. to save

  399. his people

  400. from their sins.

  401. He died the death

  402. that sinners

  403. deserve to die.

  404. He rose again

  405. on their behalf

  406. as their

  407. in union

  408. with them.

  409. And therefore,

  410. all those who believe

  411. in Jesus,

  412. his death

  413. is their death.

  414. and his resurrection

  415. is and will be

  416. their resurrection.

  417. Jesus is the friend

  418. of sinners.

  419. And he calls sinners

  420. to himself

  421. for salvation.

  422. So you've got to

  423. believe that.

  424. You've got to believe

  425. the good news.

  426. The New Testament

  427. is absolutely

  428. packed with this.

  429. Believe on the

  430. Lord Jesus Christ,

  431. said the Apostle Paul

  432. to the Philippian jailer.

  433. Believe on the

  434. Lord Jesus Christ

  435. and you

  436. will be

  437. saved.

  438. John is full of it.

  439. John's gospel.

  440. God so loved

  441. the world

  442. that he gave

  443. his only son

  444. that whoever

  445. believes in him

  446. should not perish

  447. but have everlasting life.

  448. And at the end

  449. of his gospel

  450. he says,

  451. I've written all this

  452. so that you might

  453. believe

  454. that Jesus

  455. is the Christ

  456. and by believing

  457. you might have

  458. life

  459. in his name.

  460. And Thomas,

  461. he says to Thomas,

  462. Thomas you've only

  463. believed because

  464. you've seen me.

  465. Blessed are those

  466. who have not seen

  467. and yet have believed.

  468. The New Testament

  469. is full of it.

  470. The Apostle Paul

  471. is full of it.

  472. We are justified.

  473. We are freed

  474. from condemnation

  475. in God's sight

  476. by faith,

  477. by believing

  478. in the Lord Jesus Christ.

  479. So what does it mean

  480. to believe in Jesus?

  481. Well,

  482. yes,

  483. it includes

  484. believing the facts

  485. about Jesus.

  486. It means,

  487. it includes

  488. believing

  489. that the New Testament

  490. is

  491. an historical

  492. record

  493. of his life

  494. and death

  495. and resurrection.

  496. Believing the facts

  497. about Jesus.

  498. You've got to do that

  499. obviously

  500. in order to believe

  501. in Jesus.

  502. And sometimes

  503. we use the word

  504. just like that.

  505. We use it

  506. in the same sense

  507. as we might say

  508. I believe

  509. in the Loch Ness Monster

  510. or I don't believe

  511. in the Loch Ness Monster.

  512. Some people do,

  513. some people don't.

  514. I don't.

  515. My wife and I

  516. went for our honeymoon

  517. to Durham

  518. where the Loch Ness Monster

  519. is supposed

  520. to appear regularly

  521. and we didn't see a thing.

  522. So we are not believers

  523. in the Loch Ness Monster.

  524. It includes

  525. believing

  526. that the story

  527. of Jesus

  528. is true

  529. and may I

  530. assure you

  531. if there's any

  532. doubters here

  533. that there's loads

  534. of evidence

  535. for this one.

  536. Far more evidence

  537. than there is

  538. for the Loch Ness Monster.

  539. There's loads

  540. of evidence

  541. for the death,

  542. for the life

  543. and the death

  544. and the resurrection

  545. of the Lord Jesus Christ.

  546. There's absolutely

  547. no shortage

  548. of evidence

  549. and if anyone

  550. tells you

  551. there's no evidence

  552. they just haven't

  553. looked at it,

  554. that's all.

  555. They haven't really

  556. looked at the evidence.

  557. So if there's

  558. anybody here

  559. who's got a problem

  560. about that

  561. talk to me afterwards

  562. and I'll take you

  563. through some

  564. of the evidence.

  565. So yeah,

  566. it means believing

  567. the facts

  568. about Jesus

  569. but it means

  570. much more than that.

  571. The word believe

  572. in the New Testament

  573. means

  574. to trust,

  575. to rely on

  576. personally,

  577. to depend on

  578. personally,

  579. to trust

  580. the person,

  581. the words,

  582. the death,

  583. the resurrection

  584. of the Lord Jesus Christ.

  585. To trust ourselves

  586. completely to Him

  587. and just to say to Him,

  588. I can't do it.

  589. You know what I'm like.

  590. I can't do it

  591. but you can do it

  592. for me

  593. and I trust you

  594. to do it.

  595. trusting

  596. the Lord Jesus Christ,

  597. relying on

  598. His death

  599. for our sins,

  600. believing

  601. that His sacrifice

  602. on the cross

  603. is sufficient

  604. to cover all our sins

  605. no matter how wicked

  606. we may have been,

  607. no matter how long

  608. we may have rebelled

  609. against Him

  610. and closed our hearts

  611. to Him.

  612. He calls us now

  613. to believe in Him

  614. and

  615. He will

  616. save us

  617. if we do.

  618. It is to rely

  619. and trust,

  620. rely upon

  621. and to trust

  622. in His grace

  623. and His love

  624. and His mercy

  625. which is greater

  626. than all

  627. our sins.

  628. It is to rely

  629. on His resurrection

  630. from the dead

  631. as our hope

  632. for the future

  633. and it's to stop

  634. relying on anything else.

  635. That's what it means

  636. to believe in Jesus.

  637. There are some

  638. other words

  639. that the New Testament

  640. sometimes uses

  641. instead of faith,

  642. coming

  643. to Jesus.

  644. Remember what I said

  645. about turning round?

  646. Coming,

  647. instead of

  648. distancing ourselves

  649. from Him,

  650. coming

  651. to Jesus.

  652. Come

  653. to Jesus.

  654. Lepers

  655. came to Jesus.

  656. They couldn't do anything

  657. at all themselves

  658. about their leprosy

  659. but they came

  660. to Jesus

  661. for cleansing.

  662. All sorts

  663. of people

  664. came to Jesus

  665. and He never

  666. turned

  667. any of them

  668. away

  669. ever

  670. and if you

  671. come to Him

  672. He won't turn you

  673. away either.

  674. He invites

  675. people to come

  676. to Him.

  677. Come unto Me

  678. all you

  679. who are weary

  680. and burdened

  681. and I will give you

  682. rest.

  683. He invites

  684. you

  685. to come

  686. to Him

  687. this evening.

  688. The New Testament

  689. also talks about

  690. receiving Jesus.

  691. Receiving

  692. Jesus.

  693. It actually

  694. says

  695. that we've got

  696. to receive

  697. Jesus

  698. like little

  699. children.

  700. Little

  701. children

  702. love

  703. receiving

  704. things.

  705. Have you

  706. noticed that?

  707. I've got

  708. some grandchildren

  709. and I've had

  710. two children

  711. of my own

  712. and

  713. every Christmas

  714. we used to

  715. give them

  716. gifts like

  717. parents do

  718. and not

  719. once did

  720. either of my

  721. two children

  722. come to me

  723. and say

  724. Dad

  725. you've just

  726. been too

  727. generous this

  728. year

  729. can't accept

  730. all this

  731. and if I do

  732. accept all

  733. of it

  734. I'll at least

  735. have to pay

  736. for some

  737. of it.

  738. No chance

  739. absolutely

  740. no chance

  741. at all.

  742. They never

  743. ever spoke

  744. to me

  745. in those

  746. terms.

  747. They just

  748. said

  749. they didn't

  750. even say

  751. thank you

  752. they just

  753. said let's

  754. bring it

  755. on more

  756. and more.

  757. They love

  758. receiving

  759. things.

  760. Children

  761. love

  762. receiving

  763. things.

  764. That's how

  765. you've got to

  766. come to

  767. Jesus.

  768. You've come

  769. to receive

  770. what he's

  771. done.

  772. New Testament

  773. talks about

  774. following him

  775. following him

  776. and that's

  777. important.

  778. If you

  779. really come

  780. to Jesus

  781. if you

  782. really turn

  783. from yourself

  784. to Jesus

  785. you will

  786. follow him

  787. you want

  788. to please

  789. him

  790. you want

  791. to be

  792. led by

  793. him

  794. your whole

  795. life.

  796. Near where

  797. I live

  798. is Morecambe

  799. Bay

  800. and Morecambe

  801. Bay

  802. is

  803. quite a

  804. dangerous

  805. area

  806. there are

  807. lots of

  808. quicksand

  809. but there

  810. is a way

  811. across

  812. Morecambe

  813. Bay

  814. and there's

  815. a man

  816. who's just

  817. retired

  818. he was

  819. called

  820. Cedric

  821. and he

  822. used to

  823. lead walks

  824. across

  825. Morecambe

  826. Bay

  827. he used

  828. to go

  829. in a

  830. tractor

  831. actually

  832. and

  833. maybe

  834. 200

  835. people

  836. would

  837. follow

  838. the

  839. tractor

  840. and he

  841. would

  842. take

  843. them

  844. from

  845. Arnside

  846. to the

  847. other

  848. side

  849. of the

  850. bay

  851. to

  852. Grange

  853. over

  854. Sand

  855. but the

  856. point is

  857. you had

  858. to follow

  859. him

  860. if you

  861. trusted

  862. Cedric

  863. you

  864. followed

  865. him

  866. you

  867. didn't

  868. say

  869. oh I

  870. know

  871. better

  872. than

  873. Cedric

  874. you

  875. didn't

  876. wander

  877. off

  878. if you

  879. did

  880. you'd

  881. end up

  882. being

  883. swallowed

  884. up

  885. by

  886. quicksand

  887. honestly

  888. you

  889. followed

  890. Cedric

  891. he was

  892. the

  893. guide

  894. and he

  895. knew

  896. the way

  897. and because

  898. you

  899. believed

  900. in him

  901. because

  902. you

  903. trusted

  904. him

  905. you

  906. followed

  907. him

  908. and

  909. that's

  910. what

  911. you

  912. will

  913. do

  914. if

  915. you

  916. trusted

  917. Jesus

  918. New

  919. Testament

  920. also

  921. talks

  922. about

  923. feeding

  924. on

  925. Jesus

  926. and

  927. drinking

  928. of

  929. Jesus

  930. and that's

  931. a lovely

  932. picture

  933. particularly in the light of the Lord's Supper which is coming up

  934. soon

  935. it is a lovely picture

  936. of

  937. trusting

  938. in Jesus

  939. my wife makes lovely apple pie

  940. so does

  941. Paul's wife

  942. actually

  943. because we had a bit

  944. at lunchtime

  945. they both make lovely apple pie

  946. I'm telling you that

  947. you can believe that

  948. with your head

  949. ask my wife

  950. and she might even give you a recipe

  951. you can believe the recipe

  952. you can understand the recipe

  953. you can even

  954. make an apple pie

  955. but if you don't eat it

  956. you'll never taste

  957. how good it is

  958. you've got to

  959. take

  960. the Lord Jesus

  961. as it were

  962. to yourself

  963. by faith

  964. eat

  965. and drink

  966. anyone

  967. who

  968. comes to me

  969. will never

  970. thirst

  971. again

  972. there's a man called Alfred Wainwright

  973. who

  974. before he died

  975. lived in Kendall

  976. he was the

  977. treasurer of the council

  978. and

  979. he was absolutely mad

  980. on the Lake District

  981. and he went up every

  982. Lake District peak

  983. and he

  984. wrote a guidebook

  985. both with pen and ink

  986. on every

  987. Lake District mountain

  988. and his books sell like

  989. hot potatoes

  990. now

  991. and you

  992. could become an expert

  993. on the Lake District

  994. just by reading Wainwright's

  995. guidebook

  996. you could spend your

  997. winter evenings

  998. by the fire

  999. reading up about

  1000. the different paths

  1001. of Skidda

  1002. and Scorfell

  1003. and Helvellyn

  1004. and so on

1005. you could know all about it

  1006. by reading Wainwright's

  1007. guidebook

1008. but unless you get up

  1009. and get out

  1010. onto those fowls

  1011. you'll never

  1012. experience

  1013. what it

  1014. like

  1015. to look out

  1016. from the top

  1017. of Helvellyn

  1018. and see

  1019. all those peaks

  1020. and all those lakes

  1021. below you

  1022. that's what it means

  1023. to believe

  1024. not just

  1025. head knowledge

  1026. but

  1027. acting

  1028. on what

  1029. you know

  1030. so

  1031. repent

  1032. and believe

  1033. I want to say

  1034. just two things

  1035. before I

  1036. I'm really finished

  1037. but I want

  1038. before I sit down

  1039. I want to say

  1040. two very important things

  1041. the first of these

  1042. two very important things

  1043. is that repenting

  1044. and believing

  1045. in Jesus

  1046. are ongoing

  1047. those who

  1048. repent

  1049. and believe

  1050. in Jesus

  1051. continue

  1052. to repent

  1053. and believe

  1054. in Jesus

  1055. in fact

  1056. their repentance

  1057. and their faith

  1058. deepens

  1059. as the longer

  1060. they are following

  1061. Jesus

  1062. the longer

  1063. they're Christians

  1064. the more

  1065. their repentance

  1066. and their faith

  1067. deepens

  1068. and

  1069. Hebrews chapter 11

    Hebrews 11 chapter mention

  1070. is quite clear

  1071. about this

  1072. believers

  1073. continue

  1074. to believe

  1075. they believe

  1076. until they die

  1077. they die

  1078. in faith

  1079. Hebrews chapter 11

    Hebrews 11 chapter mention

  1080. and

  1081. that is the mark

  1082. of true faith

  1083. and true repentance

  1084. that it continue

  1085. as we were thinking

  1086. this morning

  1087. it doesn't fizzle out

  1088. it doesn't get choked

  1089. by thorns and thistles

  1090. if it's true faith

  1091. those who repent

  1092. and believe

  1093. continue

  1094. to repent

  1095. and believe

  1096. and I come now

  1097. to the second

  1098. of the two

  1099. final

  1100. important points

  1101. and it

  1102. follows really

  1103. from what I've

  1104. just said

  1105. that repentance

  1106. and faith

  1107. are not just

  1108. the way we

  1109. start the

  1110. Christian life

  1111. they are

  1112. how we

  1113. continue

  1114. the Christian

  1115. life

  1116. when I was

  1117. a young

  1118. Christian

  1119. when I was

  1120. a teenager

  1121. and

  1122. maybe in my

  1123. early 20s

  1124. there used

  1125. to be all

  1126. kinds of

  1127. theories

  1128. and formula

  1129. how to live

  1130. what was called

  1131. a victorious

  1132. Christian life

  1133. and

  1134. there were

  1135. different groups

  1136. and different

  1137. speakers

  1138. and different

  1139. conventions

  1140. and different

  1141. books

  1142. and they all

  1143. had their

  1144. particular

  1145. catchphrases

  1146. or even

  1147. the word

  1148. secret

  1149. was used

  1150. the secret

  1151. of living

  1152. a victorious

  1153. Christian life

  1154. and I used

  1155. to go from

  1156. one to the

  1157. other

  1158. because I was

  1159. aware that I

  1160. wasn't doing

  1161. particularly well

  1162. living the

  1163. Christian life

  1164. I used to

  1165. go from

  1166. one to the

  1167. other

  1168. seeking this

  1169. secret

  1170. of how to

  1171. live a

  1172. victorious

  1173. Christian life

  1174. which is

  1175. not an

  1176. expression I

  1177. really approve

  1178. of

  1179. because a

  1180. victorious

  1181. Christian life

  1182. would be a

  1183. sinless life

  1184. if you sin

  1185. and you do

  1186. every day

  1187. you would

  1188. fail

  1189. you of not

  1190. being victorious

  1191. so this

  1192. victorious

  1193. Christian life

  1194. that I was

  1195. seeking

  1196. and this

  1197. secret

  1198. that I

  1199. was

  1200. seeking

  1201. I wish

  1202. I hadn't

  1203. bothered

  1204. to be

  1205. honest

  1206. with you

  1207. I wish

  1208. that I

  1209. hadn't gone

  1210. through that

  1211. stage

  1212. in my life

  1213. because

  1214. there is no

  1215. quick fix

  1216. there is

  1217. no secret

  1218. it's not a

  1219. secret at all

  1220. the way you

  1221. respond to

  1222. Jesus and

  1223. the way you

  1224. continue to

  1225. respond to

  1226. Jesus

  1227. is repentance

  1228. and faith

  1229. you carry

  1230. on as

  1231. you began

  1232. repentance

  1233. and faith

  1234. that's all

  1235. go on

  1236. repenting

  1237. go on

  1238. believing

  1239. go on

  1240. preaching the

  1241. same gospel

  1242. to yourself

  1243. every day

  1244. you need it

  1245. every day

  1246. because you'll

  1247. sin

  1248. sadly

  1249. every day

  1250. in thought

  1251. or word

  1252. or deed

  1253. go on

  1254. repenting

  1255. go on

  1256. trusting in

  1257. the promises

  1258. of Jesus

  1259. examine

  1260. yourself

  1261. search your

  1262. heart

  1263. every day

  1264. ask God
