  1. We are in Luke 4 tonight. Paul read for us from verses 1 all the way down to verse 13 of the temptation of Jesus Christ.

  2. ! I'm probably going to pull off a nifty trick because I'll eventually preach on the whole Luke 4 just now, but I had Paul think that I'm only going to preach in the first 12 verses.

  3. And you've got to be warned, I've had a nap this afternoon, and so it means it's going to be a long sermon. I hope you're strapped in quite comfortably.

  4. And so, yeah, that's all good.

  5. Luke 4, it follows, of course, what's happened at the beginning of the Gospel.

  6. And we've all enjoyed Christmas, I hope, and we have reminded ourselves of the birth of Jesus Christ.

  7. And we've most likely looked at various texts in the Gospels describing the birth of Jesus Christ.

  8. And so we're at the beginning of the Gospel, and you can trace the story of God's Son, Jesus Christ, who is born.

  9. And then as he is born, he is also eventually baptized, circumcised first, and then baptized later as an adult.

  10. And he is then tempted in the desert.

  11. That's what we've just read of.

  12. Now, I want to help you do a number of things.

  13. The first thing is a little bit harder to do, and that is to take your Christian faith out of the Victorian myth category.

  14. And hopefully we are not there, but where you somehow treat your Christian faith as a great heartwarming story

  15. that you pay attention to on a Sunday morning, a Sunday evening, and perhaps when you read the Bible at various stages.

  16. But where you carry on with your visceral, physical, flesh-and-blood life, well, there it's doggy-dog.

  17. There it is, a different set of rules that apply.

  18. And it's there that, well, decisions that I make there, well, what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas.

  19. But in church, well, that world is apart.

  20. So I live with a sort of dualism between the heavenly spiritual things and the earthly fleshy things.

  21. There's a dichotomy there.

  22. There's a separation there.

  23. And I want to show you that the way to straddle this gap, to not live in this dualism, is the Word of God.

  24. It is God's Word that straddles this gap between the reality of heaven and God and angels and Satan and demons

  25. and the reality of this world and work and play and school and everything else.

  26. What straddles the gap is the Word of God.

  27. In other words, if you want to live a really rich life,

  28. where you're not just moving superficially through this created world, through the city, on the train, on your bicycle, at home,

  29. just dealing with immediate emotions, a desire for food, you're tired, you want to sleep,

  30. just dealing with physical, fleshy things,

  31. if you want to pursue, if you're not a Christian, you want to pursue a much richer, deeper experience of reality,

  32. the way to do that is to pay attention to the Word.

  33. It is the Word that can open up a world of richness to you with depth and with texture and with imagination

  34. and with exhilarating truths and fantastic stories and just opens up a much richer reality to you.

  35. If you want to straddle that gap, it's the Word of God that does it.

  36. And this shouldn't be unfamiliar to you, that you can live in two realities.

  37. Just yesterday, I was driving to the co-op down the road, and I was going to buy some milk,

  38. and I could see a couple just standing.

  39. It's raining.

  40. I don't want to be outside.

  41. That's why I'm driving to the store.

  42. It's raining.

  43. And there they stand with their raincoats on, just looking at their phones.

  44. I had to think as I'm driving.

  45. They are living in two worlds at that very moment.

  46. I want to get out of the rain.

  47. I want to move.

  48. I want to get some, but they're completely sucked into whatever is on their phone.

  49. So it's possible for you to be physically present in a certain circumstance whilst mentally in another place.

  50. And I'm not talking about Facebook's metaverse just yet, but that's what they're selling.

  51. It's sort of grabbing us and our attention out of this world, out of the physical realm,

  52. and pushing it into another realm, one that they've made and created.

  53. How do I straddle the gap between heaven and earth?

  54. The Word of God.

  55. The Word of God.

  56. Where do I get it in this passage?

  57. Well, that is for me also the million-dollar question.

  58. Let's look at the passage, and I hope I can show you how it fits together.

  59. Now, it is the temptation of Jesus Christ.

  60. And right from the off, we learn that Jesus had just finished his time in the wilderness that lasted for 40 days.

  61. 40 days.

  62. And after this time in the desert of 40 days, something strange happens.

  63. Verse 3 tells us that the devil came and tempted him, asking,

  64. if you are the Son of God, command these stones to become bread.

  65. Now, this is where it gets weird.

  66. And if you're not a Christian, you think, hang on, the devil?

  67. Are we, are you sure?

  68. I mean, it feels like I've slipped down a rabbit hole, and it's a fantasy novel.

  69. I'm expecting magicians on broomsticks to fly by any moment.

  70. It feels like you've taken me from a very visceral story.

  71. This whole story is based in history.

  72. We're getting mentions of Tiberius Caesar and Pontius Pilate and Herod the Tetrarch.

  73. You can date the things that's happened.

  74. It happened in real time, in real history.

  75. And whoa, all of a sudden, we're dealing with the devil.

  76. We're dealing with temptation and this strange business where Jesus goes from the wilderness

  77. to a mountaintop and then to the pinnacle of the temple.

  78. It feels like everything has just gone off track a little bit.

  79. And it's just suddenly spiritual, metaphysical, different reality all of a sudden.

  80. Please don't shut off.

  81. Don't take this passage that doesn't fit your neat, perhaps conservative, evangelical, rational world

  82. where you can look at historical facts and evidence for Jesus and fit it all together.

  83. It doesn't fit that neat world because it speaks of demons and devils and angels in a spiritual way

  84. that you find a little bit uncomfortable.

  85. Don't shut it down.

  86. No, do the hard work of bringing the spiritual and the physical together through the Word of God.

  87. It's Jesus that straddles this gap.

  88. And the clue is in the 40 days.

  89. You see, the 40 days mimics something or at least recapitulates something that happens in the Old Testament

  90. in a very real sense.

  91. It's the 40 years that God's first son, Israel, was in the wilderness.

  92. And you'll soon see that everything that happens with Jesus in this temptation

  93. is essentially a smaller, shorter, compacted version of everything that happened

  94. in flesh and blood history to Israel in the whole Old Testament.

  95. Yes, Israel was in the wilderness 40 years.

  96. Yes, Jesus in the wilderness 40 days.

  97. And then Israel, well, God met Moses on Mount Zion and there he gave him his Word.

  98. And whilst God was meeting with his church, with his people, with his first son Israel

  99. and making covenant with them from the mountaintop, well, the people were making a golden calf

  100. and worshiping it.

  101. But there's a mountaintop experience in Israel's history.

  102. They go from the wilderness to the mountain and from the mountain they eventually end up

  103. in the promised land and the temple.

  104. And that's where Jesus' temptation takes him next, to the temple, to the pinnacle of the temple.

  105. And so this is a clue that helps you to see that far from being simply spiritual, metaphysical,

  106. this whole thing that happened to Jesus when he's being tempted,

  107. it's actually something that's happened in flesh and blood real time

  108. to God's first son Israel in the whole Old Testament.

  109. And you've got to start seeing that there is a congruence between what happens in the physical realm

  110. to that which happens in the spiritual realm.

  111. There is a connection between these two things.

  112. Strange.

  113. It shouldn't surprise us, should it?

  114. Ephesians 6 says, put on the full armor of God

  115. so that you can take your stand against the devil's schemes.

  116. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers,

  117. against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world,

  118. and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.

  119. There is supposed to be a connection between the heavenly realms

  120. and this physical experience that we live in this world.

  121. And if you want to straddle the gap, you can finish that sentence by now.

  122. You need the word of God.

  123. That's exactly what Jesus came to do.

  124. He is the word in the flesh.

  125. And he's here to straddle that gap.

  126. To show us that he is the way, the truth, and the life.

  127. And if we want to have a fuller understanding of reality,

  128. we need him to lead us in this way.

  129. So the devil tempts Jesus.

  130. And he tempts him on these three occasions.

  131. In the wilderness, on the mountaintop, and in the temple.

  132. He tempts Jesus.

  133. But why is he tempting Jesus?

  134. It's Hermann Barfing that said,

  135. The essence of the Christian religion consists in this,

  136. that the creation of the Father, ruined by sin,

  137. is restored in the death of the Son of God,

  138. is restored in the death of the Son of God,

  139. and recreated by the grace of the Holy Spirit

  140. into a kingdom of God.

  141. It's this mission that the devil was trying to stop.

  142. First in the first son, Israel.

  143. Before that, in Adam and Eve.

  144. And now in Jesus.

  145. And then in the New Testament church,

  146. the church that we live in now.

  147. He wants to stop this mission where God's creation,

  148. ruined by sin,

  149. that has been restored in the death of the Son of God.

  150. If Jesus did not die,

  151. the restoration would not have been possible.

  152. So the devil wants to stop this mission,

  153. this project.

  154. It would not have been possible,

  155. so that it can then not just be restored,

  156. but recreated by the grace of the Holy Spirit,

  157. as we build the kingdom of God.

  158. So the devil schemes as to interrupt this plan.

  159. And he tempts Jesus after 40 days in the desert,

  160. then on a mountaintop,

  161. and then on the top of the temple.

  162. And the heart of his temptation is a single question,

  163. if you are the Son of God.

  164. He asks this basic question about Jesus' identity.

  165. If you are the Son of God, do this.

  166. If you're not the Son of God, don't do this.

  167. If you are the Son of God, do this.

  168. But it's the Son of God,

  169. the identity of him as Son of God,

  170. that is where the real battle line lies.

  171. If you continue to read Luke 4,

  172. you'll see that Jesus then follows up this temptation

  173. with miracles that proves that he is the Son of God.

  174. He drives out demons,

  175. he heals the ill, the unwell,

  176. and he speaks with such authority

  177. that people start to say,

  178. hang on,

  179. this man is the Son of God.

  180. So the people start to recognize

  181. what the devil wanted to suppress,

  182. that which Jesus knew.

  183. So God's Word,

  184. God's Word,

  185. is that which helps us to straddle the gap

  186. between the spiritual and the physical,

  187. the heavenly and the earthly.

  188. But how does he do that?

  189. We read Luke 4,

  190. and the following thing happens.

  191. Jesus is in the temple,

  192. in the synagogue.

  193. And it's on the Sabbath day

  194. that he preaches.

  195. And in verse 17 we read,

  196. and the scroll of the prophet Isaiah

  197. was given to him.

  198. He unrolled the scroll,

  199. he found the place where it's written.

  200. And this is what's written.

  201. But before I read what's written,

  202. Jesus stands up,

  203. he reads this.

  204. When he's done reading this,

  205. he will say this.

  206. He will say,

  207. everything you've just heard,

  208. the prophet said,

  209. is about me.

  210. Everything I've just read

  211. from the prophet,

  212. it's me.

  213. So let me read what he reads on Isaiah.

  214. He reads in verse 18,

  215. It's me.

  216. That's what Jesus is saying.

  217. He's reading this prophecy from Isaiah,

  218. and he says,

  219. I am the anointed one.

  220. I am the son of God.

  221. And can you imagine the scene

  222. in that synagogue?

  223. It's a bit silent.

  224. Jesus has just read it.

  225. He's received the scroll

  226. from the synagogue assistant.

  227. If I had one of my sons,

  228. they would have brought me

  229. the scroll.

  230. I would unfurl it

  231. and stand here,

  232. then read,

  233. and then with drama

  234. and suspense,

  235. slowly roll it up

  236. and hand it,

  237. and they take it,

  238. and they put it away.

  239. And then everyone

  240. with suspense

  241. wait to hear what Jesus

  242. has to say about

  243. what he's just read.

  244. This is what he says.

  245. He rolled up the scroll,

  246. gave it back to the attendant,

  247. and sat down.

  248. And the eyes of all

  249. in the synagogue

  250. were fixed on him.

  251. And he began to say,

  252. Today,

  253. this scripture

  254. has been fulfilled

  255. in your hearing.

  256. Today.

  257. So everyone sitting there

  258. looking at Jesus

  259. starts to make

  260. the calculation

  261. in their minds.

  262. The anointed one,

  263. today this has been fulfilled.

  264. They know the reports

  265. of Jesus healing people

  266. and setting captives free.

  267. They're starting to think,

  268. well,

  269. perhaps,

  270. perhaps,

  271. who knows,

  272. but look what happens.

  273. And all spoke well

  274. of him

  275. and marveled

  276. at the gracious words

  277. that were coming

  278. from his mouth.

  279. You see what happened?

  280. Jesus said,

  281. I am the one,

  282. and people started

  283. to calculate it,

  284. and then as they sat there,

  285. they said,

  286. mind blown,

  287. this is him.

  288. This is the anointed one.

  289. This is Jesus.

  290. Now we said,

  291. if we want to straddle the gap

  292. between the spiritual

  293. and the real,

  294. we need the word of God.

  295. And what Jesus was doing

  296. at the very point,

  297. he was saying to them,

  298. I am the word of God.

  299. Not,

  300. here is the word of God

  301. in a scroll

  302. written up for you

  303. to go and read,

  304. but the word of God

  305. is physically

  306. in front of you

  307. in three dimensions

  308. right here in front of you.

  309. If you want to straddle the gap,

  310. don't just listen

  311. to the teaching,

  312. but eat me

  313. through faith.

  314. I'll explain that later,

  315. but eat me through faith.

  316. I want to say that

  317. in a slightly jarring way

  318. so that you don't

  319. make the mistake

  320. that the audience

  321. made in the synagogue

  322. at the time,

  323. they were listening

  324. to Jesus

  325. as he was reading,

  326. much like you might

  327. listen to a sermon

  328. when someone is preaching.

  329. I agree with that.

  330. That's fine.

  331. Okay,

  332. that makes sense to me.

  333. But yet,

  334. and this has happened

  335. in our church,

  336. yet your job is

  337. you work for a gambling firm

  338. and so tomorrow

  339. you go back

  340. and you write algorithms

  341. for a firm

  342. that essentially

  343. makes the poor poorer

  344. by stealing their money

  345. through little phone apps

  346. and you don't think

  347. twice about that

  348. because, you know,

  349. I've been able

  350. to separate two things.

  351. I can think about Jesus

  352. and about how interesting

  353. the Bible

  354. and the gospel

  355. and all of these things,

  356. but flesh and blood stuff

  357. doesn't matter.

  358. I can live it

  359. the way I want to live.

  360. These two things

  361. don't need to come together.

  362. But Jesus won't leave you there

  363. and what you do

  364. with Jesus,

  365. what you do with Jesus

  366. will reveal

  367. how you view him.

  368. Perhaps you've not read this,

  369. but we've read it

  370. in Canada Water Church

  371. in Luke 2

  372. where Simeon

  373. picks up the baby

  374. and says to Mary,

  375. the sun is destined

  376. for the fall

  377. and rise of many

  378. and essentially

  379. he will provoke

  380. a response

  381. from everybody.

  382. Well, Jesus provoked

  383. a response here

  384. in Luke 4.

  385. The response was

  386. that people listened

  387. to him and loved him.

  388. That was the first thing

  389. they did.

  390. The second thing

  391. they did

  392. is they said,

  393. but hang on,

  394. you're the son of Joseph.

  395. You're one of the kids

  396. of our town,

  397. of our village.

  398. And we've heard

  399. you've done some great stuff

  400. in other little villages.

  401. Put us on the map.

  402. Put us on the map.

  403. You're one of us.

  404. Come do some stuff

  405. for us as well.

  406. Why don't you come

  407. and do a lot of miracles

  408. over here

  409. so people will flock in

  410. and come to our little town

  411. and we'll become famous

  412. for having Jesus,

  413. the miracle worker

  414. around here.

  415. They wanted to co-opt Jesus.

  416. And listen to what they've done.

  417. They've heard the word,

  418. but instead of doing

  419. the only thing

  420. that you could do

  421. when Jesus reveals himself

  422. as the word of God,

  423. that is to fall down

  424. and worship him,

  425. they wanted to co-opt him.

  426. They wanted to get him

  427. under their thumb.

  428. They wanted to get him

  429. as one of them.

  430. They refused,

  431. in other words,

  432. to accept that Jesus

  433. is speaking of

  434. a different reality

  435. that will require them

  436. to relinquish the way

  437. that they viewed

  438. the world

  439. until the very moment

  440. and say,

  441. here is the one

  442. and we are to worship him.

  443. It's not surprising

  444. what they do next.

  445. Continue reading Luke 4.

  446. You see that

  447. when Jesus finally says,

  448. look,

  449. you want me to perform

  450. miracles for you.

  451. Be your performing

  452. miracle worker.

  453. But God's prophets

  454. like Elijah and Elisha

  455. is beholden to no one.

  456. We are in no one's pocket.

  457. We work for God

  458. and for God alone.

  459. Elisha and Elijah

  460. did it the same.

  461. They yield foreigners

  462. instead of Israelites.

  463. Don't expect me

  464. to work for you.

  465. I'm not in your pocket.

  466. I am from God

  467. and I'm for God

  468. and I will exist

  469. to proclaim his gospel

  470. fully and completely.

  471. That is what he's saying.

  472. And when he said that,

  473. they rose up.

  474. Well, first,

  475. when they heard these things,

  476. all in the synagogue

  477. were filled with wrath

  478. and they rose up

  479. and drove him

  480. out of the town

  481. and brought him

  482. to the brow of the hill

  483. on which their town

  484. was built

  485. so that they could

  486. throw him down the cliff.

  487. But passing through

  488. their midst,

  489. he went away.

  490. This is the same group

  491. of people

  492. that marveled

  493. at him speaking

  494. and then quietly resented

  495. that he didn't want

  496. to be co-opted by them

  497. and then raged

  498. with anger enough

  499. to want to kill him

  500. when he didn't fit

  501. their agenda.

  502. Is this so dissimilar

  503. to what happens

  504. in Jesus' temptation?

  505. Just think about that

  506. for a moment.

  507. The devil comes three times

  508. to tempt Jesus.

  509. He tempts Jesus

  510. in the wilderness,

  511. make bread for yourself

  512. out of these words.

  513. Jesus rebukes him

  514. with scripture.

  515. He tries a second time.

  516. He refuses to fall down

  517. and worship Jesus.

  518. He tries a second time.

  519. He takes him

  520. to the high top.

  521. He says,

  522. if you fall down

  523. and worship me,

  524. you'll get all the authority

  525. with me

  526. over all of these towns

  527. and kingdoms.

  528. And Jesus again

  529. rebuts him

  530. with scripture.

  531. And then he ups

  532. the ante a little bit

  533. and he takes him

  534. to the top

  535. of the temple.

  536. And there he quotes

  537. scripture back at him

  538. and he says,

  539. if you throw yourself

  540. off this high pinnacle,

  541. he will command

  542. these angels

  543. that will scoop you

  544. up in their hands

  545. and you will not

  546. strike your feet.

  547. He warps scripture

  548. and Jesus responds

  549. with scripture.

  550. And these three temptations

  551. in my understanding

  552. of this text

  553. gets reenacted

  554. in some way

  555. in the way

  556. that the Jews

  557. in the synagogue

  558. respond to Jesus.

  559. and the reason

  560. I want to put

  561. these two next

  562. to each other

  563. and I'm pretty sure

  564. my New Testament professor

  565. isn't listening

  566. to this at the moment.

  567. He said,

  568. once you've seen

  569. three points

  570. that make neat sense

  571. and you want to fit

  572. the rest of the passage

  573. into your little model,

  574. you're most likely

  575. on the wrong path.

  576. Could be.

  577. But hear me on this

  578. and see if you

  579. see the correlation.

  580. Is that

  581. this

  582. almost fantasy

  583. novel-like

  584. experience of Jesus

  585. on being tempted

  586. by the devil?

  587. Wilderness,

  588. mountaintop,

  589. temple.

  590. Is reenacted

  591. in the physical realm

  592. through

  593. the people

  594. in the synagogue

  595. that refuses

  596. to believe

  597. that Jesus

  598. is the word of God.

  599. That refuses

  600. to believe

  601. that Jesus

  602. is to be worshipped.

  603. They want to

  604. co-opt him.

  605. And refuses

  606. to believe

  607. that Jesus

  608. will not allow

  609. scripture

  610. to be warped

  611. for nonsensical

  612. purposes.

  613. No,

  614. he exists

  615. only

  616. to glorify God

  617. and he will not

  618. throw himself

  619. down a cliff

  620. or jump

  621. off the tip

  622. of a temple.

  623. Jesus

  624. straddles

  625. this gap

  626. between the spiritual

  627. and the real

  628. because he is

  629. the word

  630. of God.

  631. Let's make this

  632. practical for a minute.

  633. if your faith

  634. as a Christian

  635. is currently

  636. sustained

  637. on fridge

  638. magnets,

  639. on tweets,

  640. or on

  641. Facebook posts,

  642. you will use

  643. the scriptures

  644. in the same way

  645. as Satan

  646. used the scriptures

  647. against the Lord Jesus.

  648. If you sustain

  649. your spiritual faith

  650. with tidbits,

  651. you will warp it

  652. and misunderstand

  653. that Jesus

  654. came

  655. as the

  656. son of God

  657. in the flesh

  658. to straddle

  659. the gap

  660. between heaven

  661. and earth

  662. so that he

  663. will one day

  664. bring heaven

  665. and earth

  666. together

  667. in the new

  668. heavens

  669. and new

  670. earth.

  671. And you

  672. will have

  673. such a low

  674. view of what

  675. Jesus came

  676. to accomplish

  677. that you'd

  678. be likely

  679. to do

  680. not just

  681. what the devil

  682. did with Jesus

  683. but do

  684. what the synagogue

  685. rulers

  686. and those

  687. listening to him

  688. did the first

  689. time.

  690. You might as

  691. well stop

  692. with that

  693. because where

  694. that ends

  695. is you

  696. want to join

  697. in the crowd

  698. by throwing

  699. Jesus off a

  700. cliff because

  701. he will not

  702. be beholden

  703. to a fridge

  704. magnet or a

  705. tweet or to

  706. whatever your

  707. particular agenda

  708. is at the

  709. moment.

  710. He will reveal

  711. through his

  712. actions and

  713. through his

  714. words that

  715. he is the

  716. Lord of the

  717. universe and

  718. there's only

  719. one right

  720. response to

  721. him and

  722. that's to

  723. fall down

  724. and worship

  725. him.

  726. And so

  727. if you

  728. sustain your

  729. spiritual walk

  730. at the

  731. moment with

  732. tidbits,

  733. be very

  734. careful.

  735. It's the

  736. word of God

  737. that straddles

  738. the gap and

  739. here we are

  740. at the

  741. beginning of

  742. the year.

  743. Would you

  744. take up the

  745. word and

  746. read it this

  747. year?

  748. If you are

  749. here tonight

  750. and you

  751. don't have

  752. a regular

  753. Bible reading

  754. plan where

  755. you immerse

  756. yourself in

  757. the scriptures,

  758. where you

  759. allow the

  760. scriptures to

  761. come at

  762. you,

  763. not just

  764. this short

  765. sayings,

  766. not just

  767. this little

  768. teachings.

  769. If you're

  770. reading a

  771. Bible devotional

  772. at the

  773. moment that

  774. just has

  775. two verses

  776. at the

  777. top and

  778. a lot of

  779. human speech

  780. below it and

  781. a little

  782. summary prayer

  783. at the

  784. bottom,

  785. you can't

  786. sustain your

  787. faith with

  788. that.

  789. You've got

  790. to come

  791. into the

  792. Bible which

  793. is a world.

  794. The Bible

  795. comes to you

  796. not just as

  797. little tidbits,

  798. as little

  799. sayings.

  800. Of course

  801. there's

  802. sayings in

  803. there.

  804. There's

  805. wisdom literature,

  806. there's

  807. psalms,

  808. there's

  809. songs,

  810. there's

  811. narrative

  812. there's

  813. history,

  814. there's

  815. prophecy,

  816. there's

  817. a whole

  818. world in

  819. the Bible.

  820. And here

  821. at the

  822. beginning of

  823. the year,

  824. God is

  825. enticing you

  826. to come

  827. into this

  828. world so

  829. that you

  830. get to

  831. know him

  832. not just

  833. as words

  834. on a

  835. page,

  836. but you

  837. get to

  838. know him

  839. as the

  840. person that

  841. can stand

  842. up in the

  843. midst of the

  844. synagogue

  845. and say,

  846. man shall

  847. not live

  848. by bread

  849. alone,

  850. but by

  851. every word

  852. that proceeds

  853. from my

  854. mouth.

  855. Hang on,

  856. he didn't

  857. say that.

  858. Huh?

  859. Did he?

  860. Kids,

  861. I'll do a

  862. trick quickly.

  863. What's

  864. noticeable

  865. about me

  866. at the

  867. moment?

  868. What's

  869. about me

  870. moment?

  871. what's

  872. drawing your

  873. attention

  874. at the

  875. moment?

  876. Except for

  877. my striking

  878. good looks

  879. and the

  880. fact that

  881. I wear

  882. a jean.

  883. I've

  884. never

  885. worn a

  886. jean

  887. in church,

  888. but here

  889. we go.

  890. There's

  891. something

  892. missing,

  893. isn't

  894. there?

  895. That's

  896. what's

  897. drawing

  898. your

  899. attention.

  900. Now,

  901. when Jesus

  902. spoke to

  903. the devil

  904. the first

  905. time,

  906. and he

  907. said to

  908. the devil,

  909. man cannot

  910. live

  911. by

  912. bread

  913. alone.

  914. You know

  915. a Jewish

  916. reader,

  917. when they

  918. read Luke

  919. and they

  920. hear that

  921. first

  922. phrase,

  923. they want

  924. to finish

  925. it.

  926. Can anyone

  927. finish it?

  928. Let me

  929. first ask

  930. children,

  931. can you

  932. finish,

  933. how does

  934. that sentence

  935. go?

  936. Man cannot

  937. live by

  938. bread

  939. alone,

  940. but

  941. by every

  942. word that

  943. proceeds from

  944. my mouth.

  945. That is a

  946. quote from

  947. Deuteronomy

  948. 8.

  949. And when

  950. Jesus said

  951. to Satan,

  952. man cannot

  953. live by

  954. bread

  955. alone,

  956. and the

  957. reader of

  958. Luke's

  959. gospel read

  960. that passage,

  961. he wanted

  962. to fill in

  963. the dot

  964. where it

  965. says,

  966. but by

  967. the word

  968. that proceeds

  969. from God's

  970. mouth.

  971. That is how

  972. we live.

  973. And so

  974. Jesus was

  975. drawing attention

  976. to that

  977. which was

  978. missing,

  979. and that

  980. he is

  981. the word

  982. of God

  983. in the

  984. flesh,

  985. and that

  986. you will

  987. live,

  988. not just

  989. when you

  990. tickle your

  991. ears with

  992. the gospel

  993. where you

  994. hear God's

  995. word and

  996. say,

  997. that's good,

  998. but you

  999. live the

  1000. way that

  1001. you want

  1002. to live.

  1003. He is

  1004. the word

  1005. that proceeds

  1006. from God's

  1007. mouth.

  1008. He is

  1009. God's

  1010. word.

  1011. He is

  1012. the one

  1013. that as

  1014. we hear

  1015. him,

  1016. we shouldn't

  1017. just hear

  1018. him,

  1019. we should

  1020. eat him.

  1021. He should

  1022. become our

  1023. bread of

  1024. heaven.

  1025. In the

  1026. same way

  1027. as Israel

  1028. in Deuteronomy

  1029. are panting

  1030. for food

  1031. and God

  1032. gives them

  1033. food out

  1034. of heaven.

  1035. He is

  1036. the one

  1037. that we

  1038. are to

  1039. eat if

  1040. we want

  1041. to live.

  1042. He is

  1043. the rock

  1044. on whom

  1045. we should

  1046. build our

  1047. lives if

  1048. we want

  1049. to straddle

  1050. the gap

  1051. between

  1052. the heavenly

  1053. and the

  1054. earthly.

  1055. And so

  1056. the invitation

  1057. of this

  1058. passage is

  1059. that you

  1060. will come

  1061. and eat

  1062. the Lord

  1063. Jesus

  1064. through

  1065. faith.

  1066. Israel

  1067. failed in

  1068. the temptations

  1069. against

  1070. Satan.

  1071. Jesus

  1072. succeeded

  1073. fully.

  1074. You are

  1075. now the

  1076. new

  1077. Israel

  1078. as

  1079. God's

  1080. church.

  1081. You are

  1082. now the

  1083. new

  1084. Israel.

  1085. And so

  1086. these

  1087. temptations

  1088. will take

  1089. different

  1090. forms in

  1091. our lives

  1092. where the

  1093. question

  1094. will come

  1095. is Jesus

  1096. the son

  1097. of God

  1098. that is

  1099. to be

  1100. worshipped?

  1101. And the

  1102. scripture

  1103. says yes

  1104. he is.

  1105. And you

  1106. follow that

  1107. up with a

  1108. life of

  1109. conviction

  1110. as you

  1111. live in

  1112. that light.

  1113. And I

  1114. want to

  1115. close with

  1116. this.

  1117. If we

  1118. are the

  1119. new

  1120. Israel

  1121. and we

  1122. are,

  1123. then we

  1124. can go

  1125. back to

  1126. the word

  1127. of God

  1128. not just

  1129. the New

  1130. Testament

  1131. bits that

  1132. we enjoy

  1133. reading but

  1134. we can

  1135. read the

  1136. Old Testament

  1137. with a

  1138. new

  1139. understanding

  1140. to say

  1141. we are

  1142. the new

  1143. Israel.

  1144. The promises

  1145. of God

  1146. to his

  1147. people of

  1148. old has

  1149. been fulfilled

  1150. in Jesus

  1151. Christ and

  1152. we can

  1153. therefore stand

  1154. in confidence

  1155. and boldness

  1156. in the broken

  1157. world that we

  1158. live in that

  1159. God will do

  1160. what he has

  1161. promised to

  1162. do and

  1163. that is that

  1164. he will

  1165. fix this

  1166. world.

  1167. He will

  1168. come and

  1169. he will

  1170. redeem it all

  1171. and he will

  1172. finish his

  1173. mission for

  1174. which he

  1175. has come.

  1176. So let

  1177. me read

  1178. these words

  1179. in closing

  1180. from Zephaniah

    Zephaniah 3:14

  1181. 3 verse 14

  1182. and it's

  1183. Old Testament

  1184. written to

  1185. Israel at

  1186. the restoration

  1187. of Jerusalem.

  1188. Will you

  1189. believe that

  1190. this is true

  1191. of God's

  1192. church today?

  1193. Will you

  1194. believe that

  1195. this is true

  1196. of you

  1197. today?

  1198. And will

  1199. you start

  1200. to live

  1201. with a

  1202. richness

  1203. of experience

  1204. as you know

  1205. that the

  1206. world is not

  1207. just flesh

  1208. and blood

  1209. stuff in

  1210. front of us.

  1211. It's rich

  1212. with God's

  1213. promises and

  1214. he will

  1215. fulfill them.

  1216. Sing aloud

  1217. O daughter

  1218. of Zion

  1219. shout O

  1220. Israel

  1221. rejoice and

  1222. exult with

  1223. all your

  1224. heart.

  1225. O daughter

  1226. of Jerusalem

  1227. the Lord

  1228. has taken

  1229. away the

  1230. judgments

  1231. against you.

  1232. He has

  1233. cleared away

  1234. your enemies.

  1235. The King

  1236. of Israel

  1237. the Lord

  1238. is in your

  1239. midst.

  1240. You shall

  1241. never again

  1242. fear evil.

  1243. On that

  1244. day it

  1245. shall be

  1246. said to

  1247. Jerusalem

  1248. fear not

  1249. O

  1250. Zion

  1251. let not

  1252. your hands

  1253. grow weak.

  1254. The Lord

  1255. your God

  1256. is in your

  1257. midst.

  1258. The mighty

  1259. one who

  1260. will save.

  1261. He will

  1262. rejoice over

  1263. you with

  1264. gladness.

  1265. He will

  1266. quiet you

  1267. by his

  1268. love.

  1269. He will

  1270. exult over

  1271. you with

  1272. loud singing.

  1273. I will

  1274. gather those

  1275. of you who

  1276. mourn for

  1277. the festival

  1278. so that you

  1279. will no longer

  1280. suffer reproach.

  1281. Behold at

  1282. that time I

  1283. will deal

  1284. with all

  1285. your oppressors
