  1. Do you be seated?

  2. We're taking a break from our series in Romans.

  3. I hope there'll be a number of baptisms this year,

  4. !

  5. Let me read it to you.

  6. Proverbs 22 and verse 6.

  7. Train up a child in the way he or she should go,

  8. and even when he or she is old,

  9. he or she will not depart from it.

  10. Train up a child in the way that he should go,

  11. and even when he's old,

  12. he will not depart from it.

  13. Aaron and Bexy, like any parents, like all parents,

  14. want the best for their child.

  15. Every one of us wants that.

  16. We want to give our children a good start in life.

  17. We want children to have a good start in life.

  18. And that is a natural concern, isn't it, that parents have.

  19. That children should be put on the right road.

  20. But what is the right road?

  21. There's another proverb, and it says this.

  22. It says this.

  23. There is a way that seems right to man and woman, men and women,

  24. but it ends in death.

  25. And I don't know about you,

  26. but I don't want that for my child.

  27. And you don't want that for your children or the children in your family.

  28. So how can we avoid that?

  29. How can we know what is the right way to bring up our children?

  30. And for those of us who don't have children,

  31. you're part of this congregation,

  32. is there a right way to bring up children?

  33. Is it even possible,

  34. some people would ask that, wouldn't they?

  35. We can't talk about there being a right way

  36. and a wrong way.

  37. One way is as good as another.

  38. You've got to kind of work it out for yourself.

  39. Is it even possible to speak about

  40. a correct way of bringing up children?

  41. There's lots of different ways out there.

  42. Many different philosophies.

  43. Lots of ideas around.

  44. It's a bit like Spaghetti Junction.

  45. You know that?

  46. I don't think I've ever been on it,

  47. but you know Spaghetti Junction, don't you?

  48. You've seen photos of it.

  49. If you haven't seen it,

  50. it's like a bowl of spaghetti.

  51. And you go in one way,

  52. and you think you've taken the right way,

  53. only to come out completely in the wrong direction.

  54. And life can be like that, can't it?

  55. And so Aaron and Bexy,

  56. this morning,

  57. you are at Spaghetti Junction

  58. with the birth of your first child.

  59. Because you have to steer

  60. this little one,

  61. this little precious boy,

  62. onto the right path.

  63. And you are concerned,

  64. you want him to go in the right direction,

  65. you want him to arrive at the right destination.

  66. And so what a relief it is, isn't it,

  67. to read this morning

  68. that the Bible tells you

  69. with a message from God

  70. that there is a way that he should go.

  71. That's what the Bible says, isn't it?

  72. It says, can you see it?

  73. Train up a child in the way that he should go.

  74. And even when he's old,

  75. he will not depart from it.

  76. Two things in the verse

  77. that I want you to see,

  78. really simple,

  79. both begin with P.

  80. First of all,

  81. a pathway and a promise.

  82. Let's look at the pathway.

  83. Train up a child

  84. in the way that he should go.

  85. So let me ask you this question.

  86. Do you know what Christians were called

  87. before they were first called Christians?

  88. Anybody?

  89. Anybody?

  90. What were Christians called

  91. before they were called Christians?

  92. Followers of the way.

  93. Followers of the way.

  94. Followers of the way.

  95. That's very good, isn't it?

  96. Who said that?

  97. Followers of the way.

  98. That's right.

  99. Followers of the way.

  100. I think that's a really brilliant description,

  101. isn't it,

  102. of those first Christians.

  103. And what I want to do,

  104. just for a little bit,

  105. is I want to kind of walk you through that

  106. and show you how they were called that.

  107. Hopefully,

  108. it will come up on the screen behind me.

  109. Is that going to work?

  110. I hope.

  111. There you go.

  112. So there's six references

  113. in the Acts of the Apostles.

  114. And it's probably one of the most neglected themes

  115. in all of the Bible.

  116. So if those churches,

  117. early churches,

  118. had notice boards,

  119. they didn't have church buildings,

  120. but if they did notice boards,

  121. it would have not said

  122. International Presbyterian

  123. or First Baptist

  124. or Church of England

  125. or any of those things.

  126. It would have said

  127. Followers of the Way.

  128. It's not just a denominational label, is it?

  129. It's a message.

  130. I think it communicates something

  131. to the outside world.

  132. It's very good marketing.

  133. This is how the world thought of them.

  134. So first of all,

  135. in Acts chapter 9,

    Acts 9 chapter mention

  136. in verses 1 and 2,

  137. I'm hoping that's behind me,

  138. Saul,

  139. before he was converted,

  140. he said this,

  141. but Saul,

  142. still breathing threats

  143. and murder

  144. against the disciples of the Lord,

  145. he went to the high priest,

  146. and he asked him for letters

  147. to the synagogue at Damascus

  148. so that if he found

  149. any belonging to the

  150. way,

  151. men or women,

  152. he might bring them

  153. bound to Jerusalem.

  154. Next up is

  155. Acts 19,

  156. 8 and 9,

  157. where we're told

  158. Paul went to the synagogue

  159. at Ephesus

  160. and he spoke boldly.

  161. And he entered the synagogue

  162. and for three months

  163. he spoke boldly,

  164. reasoning and persuading people

  165. about the kingdom of God.

  166. But when some people

  167. became stubborn

  168. and continued in unbelief,

  169. speaking evil of

  170. the way,

  171. before the congregation

  172. he withdrew,

  173. took his disciples

  174. with him.

  175. And he reasoned daily

  176. in the hall of Tyrannus.

  177. So you go back

  178. right to the start

  179. of the Christian church

  180. and they're not called

  181. Anglicans,

  182. they're not called Baptists,

  183. they're not called Brethren,

  184. they're not called

  185. Presbyterians,

  186. they were called

  187. followers of the way.

  188. And that is how

  189. they were known

  190. to the outside world.

  191. That's how they thought

  192. of themselves.

  193. Let me take you

  194. to the end of chapter 19.

  195. Chapter 19 verse 21.

  196. Now after these events

  197. Paul resolved

  198. in the spirit

  199. to pass through Macedonia

  200. and Achaia

  201. and to go to Jerusalem

  202. saying after I've been there

  203. I must also see Rome.

  204. And having sent into Macedonia

  205. goes on to verse 23

  206. saying about that time

  207. there arose no little disturbance

  208. concerning the way.

  209. Chapter 22 verse 1

  210. Paul is defending himself

  211. against the mob in Jerusalem.

  212. He's been arrested.

  213. He says brothers and fathers

  214. hear the defense

  215. that I now make before you.

  216. I'm a Jew

  217. born in Tarsus in Cilicia

  218. but I've been brought up

  219. to this city.

  220. I was educated

  221. at the feet of Gamaliel

  222. this famous Jewish teacher.

  223. According to the strict manner

  224. of the law of our fathers

  225. I was zealous for God

  226. as you all are today.

  227. I persecuted this way

  228. to the death.

  229. I hated Christians.

  230. Binding them

  231. and delivering them

  232. to prison both men and women.

  233. chapter 24

  234. and verse 14

  235. I confess to you

  236. that according to the way

  237. which they call a sect

  238. I worship the God

  239. of our fathers.

  240. Believing everything

  241. laid down in the law

  242. and the prophets.

  243. It's not some Christian sect

  244. he's saying.

  245. This isn't some kind of

  246. John E.

  247. come lately group

  248. that have arrived

  249. that's appeared on the scene.

  250. It's rooted in the Old Testament.

  251. And then later on

  252. in that same chapter

  253. Felix says this

  254. having a rather accurate

  255. knowledge of the way

  256. put them off.

  257. So can you see

  258. just in that little brief

  259. thing that I've shown you

  260. this is how the early Christians

  261. described themselves.

  262. That's how they were known

  263. to the world

  264. as followers

  265. of the way.

  266. Everyone can relate to that.

  267. It's not just a denominational label.

  268. It's a message

  269. isn't it?

  270. It's a message

  271. that communicates

  272. to a world

  273. that has lost its way.

  274. So one Russian writer

  275. has described

  276. our world

  277. as a country

  278. in which there are

  279. no signposts

  280. because there's nowhere to go.

  281. It's like the council road man

  282. who was asked

  283. why are you digging that ditch?

  284. And he says

  285. I'm digging the ditch

  286. to get the money

  287. to buy the food

  288. to get the strength

  289. to dig the ditch.

  290. And that's what life

  291. might be like for you.

  292. It may be that you

  293. get up in the morning

  294. and you go to work

  295. and then you come home

  296. and you eat your supper

  297. and you watch the telly

  298. and you go to bed

  299. and you get up in the morning

  300. you go to work

  301. you come home

  302. you eat your tea

  303. you watch your telly

  304. and then you go to bed

  305. and you get up

  306. in the morning

  307. and you go to work

  308. like a hamster on a wheel.

  309. Really busy

  310. but going nowhere.

  311. Doesn't life feel

  312. like that sometimes?

  313. Like a desert.

  314. It's a really dangerous place

  315. to live.

  316. A desert, isn't it?

  317. Because the wind blows

  318. in the desert

  319. and the landscape changes

  320. and you lose

  321. your bearings

  322. and you don't know

  323. where you are.

  324. Is that what it feels like

  325. for you this morning?

  326. Maybe you look back

  327. and you thought

  328. there was a time

  329. where I thought

  330. I knew where I was going.

  331. I had my bearings

  332. in life

  333. and I thought

  334. I really knew

  335. what life was all about

  336. where life was taking me

  337. but then the winds of time

  338. blew across

  339. the landscape

  340. of my life

  341. and now I'm afraid

  342. to admit that I'm lost.

  343. And you don't know

  344. what it's all about.

  345. And so here are

  346. a group of people

  347. that claim to know

  348. where they're going.

  349. A group of people

  350. who claim to know

  351. what it's about.

  352. And Ruben has been born

  353. into this company

  354. of people.

  355. Followers of the way.

  356. Here are people

  357. that know

  358. where they are going.

  359. Here are people

  360. who realize

  361. that life

  362. is not an end

  363. in and of itself.

  364. but it's a preparation

  365. for life to come.

  366. They're followers

  367. of the way.

  368. But what is this way

  369. that we're talking about?

  370. It's not some kind

  371. of secret.

  372. It's not some kind

  373. of mystical knowledge

  374. that we've discovered.

  375. What is this way

  376. that the Bible

  377. is talking about?

  378. It's a person,

  379. isn't it?

  380. Did you pick it up

  381. when Kephas read it?

  382. What did Jesus say?

  383. Jesus said,

  384. what did he say?

  385. He said,

  386. I am the way,

  387. the truth,

  388. and the life.

  389. And no one comes

  390. to the Father

  391. except through me.

  392. And sometimes

  393. Christians want to say,

  394. well, that's a triple claim.

  395. That he's the way,

  396. he's the truth,

  397. and he's the life.

  398. I don't really think

  399. it is that.

  400. It's a single claim.

  401. In other words,

  402. Jesus is saying,

  403. I am the way,

  404. and I am the true way,

  405. and I'm the living way.

  406. And I'm the only way.

  407. I'm not a cul-de-sac,

  408. I'm not a detour,

  409. I'm not a diversion.

  410. There's loads of people

  411. that think,

  412. don't they,

  413. that Christianity,

  414. that's what it is.

  415. It's a bit like a cul-de-sac.

  416. It's a little bit

  417. like a diversion.

  418. If it helps you,

  419. that's great.

  420. Great for you.

  421. If it helps you

  422. get through life

  423. and the bumps of life,

  424. well, that's all right with us.

  425. It's a diversion

  426. from the real business of living.

  427. That's what people think.

  428. It's nothing of the sort.

  429. Jesus doesn't offer himself

  430. as a diversion.

  431. He says,

  432. I'm the way.

  433. I'm not a detour.

  434. I'm not a diversion.

  435. I'm the true,

  436. and I'm the living way.

  437. So that if a man

  438. or a woman

  439. or a boy

  440. or a girl

  441. believes in the Lord Jesus,

  442. he's going places.

  443. Because he who believes in me,

  444. Jesus says,

  445. has eternal life.

  446. He has it.

  447. And so the moment

  448. that you put your trust

  449. in the Lord Jesus Christ,

  450. you believe in the Lord Jesus Christ,

  451. you are there.

  452. You have eternal life

  453. as a gift.

  454. So what is eternal life?

  455. It's not endless existence.

  456. No one wants that,

  457. do they?

  458. No one wants to go on

  459. forever and ever

  460. living like chewing gum.

  461. You know how chewing gum

  462. we just,

  463. it loses all flavor,

  464. doesn't it?

  465. And you keep on chewing it,

  466. but you don't know

  467. why you're chewing it.

  468. It's lost its flavor.

  469. Who wants life like that?

  470. Who wants endless existence?

  471. That's not heaven.

  472. That's hell.

  473. Eternal life

  474. is not endless existence.

  475. This is eternal life,

  476. the Bible says.

  477. It is to know God

  478. and Jesus Christ

  479. in whom he has sent.

  480. And so eternal life

  481. is a relationship

  482. with the living God.

  483. So time is a really funny thing

  484. when you're trying

  485. to think about it.

  486. When you're first in love

  487. with someone,

  488. if you are in love

  489. with someone

  490. and if you have a relationship

  491. with someone,

  492. then time seems to pass,

  493. doesn't it?

  494. And you're not aware

  495. of it passing.

  496. That first date

  497. where you went out

  498. and you met

  499. at 10.30 for brunch

  500. and you said goodbye

  501. to each other

  502. at half eleven at night

  503. and you don't know

  504. where the time went

  505. because you were so

  506. caught up in each other.

  507. And that's what eternity

  508. is like for the Christian.

  509. It's not endless existence.

  510. It's not boredom.

  511. It is to know God,

  512. the most exciting person

  513. in the universe.

  514. And Jesus says,

  515. I am the way to that.

  516. I am the true way

  517. and I am the living way

  518. and I am the only way.

  519. And no one else

  520. can do this for you.

  521. The Haman writer says,

  522. there was no other good enough

  523. to pay the price of sin.

  524. He only could unlock

  525. the gate of heaven

  526. and another sin.

  527. There's no one else

  528. in the history of the universe

  529. who's claimed

  530. to be able to do it,

  531. to even pay the price of sin,

  532. to put himself

  533. between a God

  534. who is holy

  535. and other,

  536. who cannot even

  537. look at sin,

  538. to put himself

  539. between that God

  540. and a sinful people.

  541. To take the punishment

  542. that is due to us.

  543. No one else even claims that

  544. but Jesus.

  545. I am the true

  546. and the living

  547. and the only way

  548. into the Father's presence.

  549. Without me,

  550. he's saying,

  551. you're lost.

  552. It's very offensive,

  553. isn't it?

  554. I'm the way.

  555. I'm not just the Western way.

  556. I'm not just the British way.

  557. I'm not even the Christian way.

  558. As if there was some other

  559. kind of way you could choose.

  560. I am the way,

  561. the only way.

  562. Do you notice he says,

  563. he's not saying,

  564. I know the way.

  565. He's not saying,

  566. I can point you

  567. in the right direction.

  568. He's not even saying,

  569. I have the way.

  570. I have the way.

  571. Follow my teaching

  572. and you'll be alright.

  573. He's not even saying that.

  574. He is saying

  575. something far more personal,

  576. isn't he?

  577. He is saying,

  578. I am the way.

  579. And he draws attention

  580. to himself,

  581. to his own person.

  582. And that is what

  583. Christianity is all about.

  584. It's to do with

  585. a relationship

  586. with the Lord Jesus Christ.

  587. It's not about religion.

  588. It is about having

  589. a relationship

  590. with the living God.

  591. That's what the Bible

  592. talks about

  593. when it says

  594. that we're lost.

  595. So we're not lost

  596. in terms of our surroundings,

  597. are we?

  598. That is not the nature

  599. of human lostness.

  600. We live at a time

  601. when our world

  602. has never been more aware

  603. of its surroundings.

  604. Scientists can tell us,

  605. can't they,

  606. the most amazing things

  607. about the universe

  608. in which we live.

  609. We're not lost.

  610. We're not lost so much

  611. in terms of our surroundings.

  612. We're like,

  613. aren't we,

  614. the little boy

  615. or the little girl

  616. who's lost in London.

  617. They've lost sight

  618. of their parents.

  619. They've become cut off

  620. from their parents.

  621. And the police

  622. find this little boy

  623. on Oxford Street

  624. and they say,

  625. what is your name?

  626. And the little boy

  627. can tell them his name.

  628. They say,

  629. do you know your address?

  630. And the little boy

  631. can tell the police

  632. his address.

  633. And he can even

  634. tell the police

  635. what bus he should

  636. catch home.

  637. He's not lost

  638. in terms of his surroundings,

  639. is he?

  640. But he's lost

  641. in terms of his relationship.

  642. he's lost sight

  643. of his parents.

  644. And he's cold

  645. and he's miserable

  646. and he's disorientated

  647. because he's lost

  648. sight of his mother.

  649. And that's what the Bible

  650. means when it talks

  651. about lostness.

  652. You're not lost

  653. in terms of your surroundings.

  654. You're lost in terms

  655. of your relationship

  656. with the God

  657. who made you.

  658. And what the Bible

  659. teaches is that sin,

  660. our rebellion,

  661. has broken

  662. that relationship.

  663. And sin has alienated

  664. us from the God

  665. who has made us.

  666. But Jesus Christ says,

  667. I'm the way back.

  668. I'm the true

  669. and I'm the living way.

  670. And I'm the only way

  671. that you can come

  672. into a relationship

  673. with the living God.

  674. And that's what we want

  675. for little Reuben.

  676. Not religion.

  677. It is a religious ceremony

  678. that we performed

  679. this morning.

  680. But we're not wanting

  681. religion for him.

  682. I once heard somebody

  683. describe religion

  684. as a grumbling appendix.

  685. I think that's

  686. a really good likeness.

  687. And maybe that's

  688. what your Christianity is.

  689. You're not really

  690. quite sure

  691. why it's there.

  692. And you're not

  693. quite sure

  694. what religion

  695. is all about.

  696. But it grumbles.

  697. And it's there.

  698. And so every so often

  699. you give attention

  700. to it

  701. and you get it

  702. checked out.

  703. And sometimes

  704. it flares up

  705. and it gets infected

  706. and it causes you

  707. a bit of discomfort.

  708. You see,

  709. if you are religious

  710. this morning

  711. and nothing else,

  712. the best thing

  713. you can do

  714. is have your religion

  715. removed.

  716. To get rid of it

  717. altogether.

  718. It's not a bit

  719. of good to you.

  720. In fact,

  721. what it will do

  722. in the end

  723. is it will poison you.

  724. It can destroy you

  725. in the end.

  726. We don't want to make

  727. Reuben religious.

  728. God forbid

  729. that he should

  730. become religious.

  731. We want to see

  732. him have a relationship

  733. with the living God.

  734. And faith

  735. in Jesus Christ

  736. is what this

  737. baptism is

  738. all about.

  739. It's what Christianity

  740. is all about.

  741. It's a people

  742. who know God

  743. through faith

  744. in Jesus Christ.

  745. Let me read

  746. to you this

  747. little passage

  748. I read this week

  749. talking about

  750. the Lord Jesus

  751. as the only way

  752. to God.

  753. It says this,

  754. In the early days

  755. of the railway

  756. in Britain,

  757. some towns

  758. refused to have

  759. the railways

  760. go through them

  761. because they feared

  762. that the sparks

  763. from the engine

  764. would set their

  765. properties alight.

  766. Instead,

  767. the stations

  768. were set

  769. on the outskirts

  770. of the town

  771. to the immense

  772. inconvenience

  773. of later generations

  774. of townsmen.

  775. Explains an awful lot

  776. doesn't it?

  777. Why in Cambridge

  778. the station

  779. is miles

  780. from the centre.

  781. It loads them.

  782. So it says

  783. they are to construct

  784. a branch line

  785. to the main line

  786. but not so this way

  787. with Christ.

  788. He runs right

  789. through the slums

  790. of Sin Town

  791. wherever the child

  792. of God

  793. can sometimes get.

  794. He is available

  795. to us as we are.

  796. Where we are

  797. prayerless,

  798. cold and defeated

  799. we only have to

  800. acknowledge our

  801. true condition

  802. and repent of the sin

  803. that has caused it.

  804. And the grace of God

  805. reaches us

  806. in the very place

  807. where we are.

  808. We are cleansed

  809. and restored.

  810. And there and then

  811. we have stepped

  812. onto the way.

  813. What is the way

  814. to God?

  815. What is the way

  816. that you are

  817. to set Reuben on?

  818. Jesus says

  819. I am the way

  820. to God

  821. and there is

  822. no one else.

  823. And that is

  824. very, very embarrassing

  825. today, isn't it?

  826. And we are supposed

  827. to respect all religion.

  828. We do respect

  829. all religions

  830. but we are supposed

  831. to treat all religions

  832. the same

  833. around and about

  834. but Jesus will have

  835. none of it.

  836. He says

  837. I am the way

  838. and there is

  839. no other way.

  840. I am the true

  841. and the living

  842. and the only way

  843. and for anyone

  844. anywhere in the world

  845. to come to know God

  846. what's the way

  847. to God?

  848. Jesus is the way

  849. to God.

  850. What's the way

  851. to Jesus?

  852. There is no way

  853. to Jesus.

  854. He is the way

  855. and so

  856. this morning

  857. as the word

  858. of God

  859. is explained

  860. and proclaimed

  861. and tried to be

  862. applied to your

  863. conscience

  864. Jesus is here

  865. this morning.

  866. Don't think

  867. that you've got

  868. to find some way

  869. to him.

  870. He's come to you.

  871. So maybe you're thinking

  872. maybe I need to read

  873. the Bible a bit more.

  874. Maybe if I start

  875. to pray

  876. maybe I should attend

  877. church a bit more.

  878. Then I may come

  879. to Jesus.

  880. No, Jesus is the way

  881. to those things.

  882. You've got it

  883. the wrong way around.

  884. You'll never understand

  885. the Bible

  886. until you come

  887. to Jesus.

  888. You'll never want

  889. to come to church

  890. until you come

  891. to Jesus.

  892. You'll find it

  893. an enormous bore

  894. unless you know Jesus.

  895. No, Jesus is the way

  896. to those things.

  897. Those things

  898. are not the way

  899. to Jesus.

  900. And so Jesus

  901. is here this morning

  902. and he offers himself

  903. to you

  904. wherever you are

  905. in your life.

  906. Whatever problems

  907. you've got

  908. whatever condition

  909. you're in

  910. whatever the things

  911. you've gone through

  912. Jesus offers himself

  913. to you and he says

  914. I am the way.

  915. And all you've got

  916. to do is acknowledge

  917. your need.

  918. All you've got to do

  919. is cry out to me

  920. in your heart of hearts

  921. and you're on the way.

  922. You're on the way

  923. to your father's house.

  924. You're on the way

  925. to the place

  926. that he is preparing

  927. for you.

  928. That's all you need.

  929. And Jesus says

  930. I'll bring you home.

  931. Just acknowledge

  932. your need.

  933. Just admit

  934. that you're lost

  935. and step

  936. my way

  937. by faith

  938. and you are home.

  939. You do not need

  940. religion

  941. to get you home.

  942. Jesus says

  943. come to me.

  944. And so that's

  945. what we want

  946. for our children.

  947. We want them

  948. to grow up

  949. trusting in the Lord

  950. Jesus

  951. knowing him

  952. as their Lord

  953. and Savior.

  954. That is the significance

  955. of what's gone on

  956. this morning.

  957. That we are setting

  958. Reuben apart

  959. to be a Christian.

  960. We've not made him

  961. a Christian this morning

  962. by sprinkling water

  963. on him.

  964. We're not into magic.

  965. Water doesn't make

  966. anyone a Christian.

  967. Not even baptismal water.

  968. Not even baptismal water

  969. that needs to be

  970. cooled down.

  971. It's a sign

  972. and a seal.

  973. It doesn't make

  974. people Christians.

  975. We've not made

  976. Reuben a Christian

  977. this morning.

  978. But what we've done

  979. is we have set him

  980. apart

  981. that he might be Christ.

  982. We've put him

  983. on the way.

  984. That isn't going

  985. to happen automatically.

  986. Being born

  987. into a Christian home

  988. doesn't make him

  989. a Christian.

  990. So what guarantee

  991. do we have

  992. that this child

  993. will grow to know

  994. the Lord Jesus

  995. for himself?

  996. And secondly

  997. it's the promise.

  998. Can you see

  999. the promise

  1000. in the verse?

  1001. Train up a child

  1002. in the way

  1003. that he should go

1004. and even when he's old

  1005. he will not depart

  1006. from it.

  1007. And baptism

  1008. is the sign

  1009. and the seal

  1010. of that promise.

  1011. God is saying

  1012. to Aaron and Bexie

  1013. this morning

  1014. train him up

  1015. in the way

  1016. that he should go.

  1017. And I promise you

1018. that when he is old

  1019. he won't depart

  1020. from it.

  1021. And we need

  1022. that promise.

  1023. We need the strength

  1024. of that promise.

  1025. We need

  1026. the means

  1027. of grace.

  1028. We need baptism

  1029. to remind us

  1030. of that promise.

  1031. As we go

  1032. through life

  1033. for a number

  1034. of reasons.

  1035. For one thing

  1036. the way

  1037. that he should

  1038. go

  1039. is not the way

  1040. he would go.

  1041. Left to himself.

  1042. If you go to

  1043. chapter 15

  1044. in Proverbs

  1045. verse 15

  1046. of chapter 2

  1047. sorry

1048. just a little bit down

  1049. we're told

  1050. that folly

  1051. is bound up

  1052. in the heart

  1053. of a child.

  1054. But the rod

  1055. of discipline

  1056. drives it far

  1057. from him.

  1058. Foolishness

  1059. is bound up

  1060. in the heart

  1061. of a child.

  1062. We sometimes

  1063. underestimate

  1064. children

  1065. don't we?

  1066. Children

  1067. know a great deal.

  1068. Solomon

  1069. who wrote Proverbs

  1070. he doesn't mean

  1071. when he says

  1072. foolishness

  1073. is bound up

  1074. in the heart

  1075. of a child

  1076. that children

  1077. are unintelligent.

  1078. No it's talking

  1079. about the way

  1080. that we would

  1081. go left

  1082. to ourselves.

  1083. And so even

  1084. in a small

  1085. child

  1086. there is

  1087. something twisted

  1088. something not

  1089. right.

  1090. And we don't

  1091. like to think

  1092. like that

  1093. but that is

  1094. what the Bible

  1095. says.

  1096. We're born

  1097. with perversity

  1098. in our hearts.

  1099. This is something

  1100. we pick up

  1101. on the way.

1102. We didn't pick it up

  1103. when we went

  1104. to junior school

  1105. or when we went

  1106. to secondary school.

  1107. Some of you

  1108. know David

  1109. in the Old Testament

  1110. he wrote most

  1111. of the Psalms

1112. he was the great king

  1113. and when he was

  1114. in his middle age

  1115. his late middle age

  1116. disaster came

  1117. he had a moral

  1118. collapse.

  1119. He stole

  1120. another man's

  1121. wife.

  1122. He got found

  1123. out to try

  1124. and cover up

  1125. his tracks.

  1126. He had

  1127. the husband

  1128. killed.

  1129. And when David

  1130. actually sat

  1131. back and he

  1132. reflected on

  1133. his life

  1134. and he confessed

  1135. his sin to God

  1136. he traced it

  1137. back and he

  1138. said my sin

  1139. it began

  1140. when did it

  1141. begin?

  1142. Right at the

  1143. very beginning.

  1144. Psalm 51

  1145. says I was

  1146. brought forth

  1147. in iniquity

  1148. and in sin

  1149. did my mother

  1150. conceive me.

  1151. Why did David

  1152. go at the age

  1153. of 50

  1154. and car crash

  1155. his life?

  1156. Why did he

  1157. wreck another

  1158. family for his

  1159. own convenience?

  1160. Why did he

  1161. do such a

  1162. terrible thing?

  1163. And David

  1164. says do you

  1165. know what I

  1166. can trace it

  1167. back to my

  1168. mother's womb?

  1169. The moment I

  1170. began

  1171. is the moment

  1172. I was a

  1173. sinner.

  1174. Before I ever

  1175. did a sinful

  1176. thing before I

  1177. ever behaved in

  1178. a selfish way

  1179. I was already

  1180. a sinner by

  1181. nature.

  1182. And that's

  1183. true of me.

  1184. That's true of

  1185. Reuben as

  1186. adorable as he

  1187. is.

  1188. he should

  1189. go.

  1190. The way he

  1191. should go is

  1192. not the way

  1193. that he would

  1194. go left to

  1195. himself.

  1196. And I

  1197. remember you

  1198. will need to

  1199. remind him

  1200. as you bring

  1201. him up, as

  1202. you train him

  1203. and discipline

  1204. him and you

  1205. correct foolishness,

  1206. that perversity.

  1207. The last thing

  1208. that Christian

  1209. parents should do

  1210. to their

  1211. children is let

  1212. them just

  1213. express themselves.

  1214. because what

  1215. we are by

  1216. nature is not

  1217. what we

  1218. should be.

  1219. Left to

  1220. ourselves is a

  1221. disaster.

  1222. Foolishness is

  1223. bound in the

  1224. heart of all

  1225. children so

  1226. parents are to

  1227. correct that in

  1228. the ways of

  1229. Christ.

  1230. And so we

  1231. need this

  1232. reminder of

  1233. baptism.

  1234. This promise

  1235. brought home to

  1236. us that God

  1237. can cleanse our

  1238. hearts from sin

  1239. like the water

  1240. can wash away

  1241. the dirt.

  1242. when he

  1243. believes on the

  1244. Lord Jesus

  1245. Christ.

  1246. And so you

  1247. are to teach

  1248. him that and

  1249. to tell him

  1250. that and to

  1251. model that and

  1252. to pray for him

  1253. for that.

  1254. But the way he

  1255. should go is not

  1256. the way he

  1257. would go.

  1258. You cannot

  1259. leave him to

  1260. himself.

  1261. We all like

  1262. sheep have gone

  1263. astray.

  1264. We've all turned

  1265. everyone to his

  1266. own way but the

  1267. Lord has laid on

  1268. him the iniquity

  1269. of us all.

  1270. Left to

  1271. ourselves we do

  1272. our own thing but

  1273. the truth of the

  1274. Bible is that God

  1275. has provided a

  1276. saviour.

  1277. And God

  1278. himself has come

  1279. in the person

  1280. of his own

  1281. son to

  1282. Calvary to

  1283. take our

  1284. sin upon

  1285. himself.

  1286. And so we've

  1287. got to say to

  1288. little Reuben and

  1289. to our children

  1290. you and I we

  1291. are sinners by

  1292. nature and if

  1293. you carry on in

  1294. your sin you

  1295. will perish.

  1296. You will end

  1297. up in eternity

  1298. without God but

  1299. God has provided

  1300. a way of

  1301. salvation.

  1302. And God

  1303. himself has

  1304. come to take

  1305. that sin upon

  1306. himself at the

  1307. cross and so

  1308. believe in the

  1309. Lord Jesus

  1310. Christ and you

  1311. will be saved.

  1312. You've got

  1313. every encouragement

  1314. to believe.

  1315. So did God

  1316. put you into

  1317. this family by

  1318. accident?

  1319. And God has

  1320. promised that if

  1321. you repent and

  1322. if you believe in

  1323. Jesus Christ he

  1324. will wash away

  1325. your sin.

  1326. That's what

  1327. baptism means.

  1328. And so we

  1329. bring up our

  1330. children on that

  1331. promise God

  1332. made at our

  1333. baptism.

  1334. We pray that

  1335. promise every

  1336. day that God

  1337. will do this for

  1338. you.

  1339. And that's one

  1340. reason why we

  1341. need this

  1342. promise.

  1343. Another

  1344. reason.

  1345. The way that

  1346. he should go

  1347. and the way

  1348. that we

  1349. would go is

  1350. radically

  1351. different from

  1352. any other

  1353. way.

  1354. Christianity

  1355. is not

  1356. respectable.

  1357. If you at

  1358. the time you

  1359. could go

  1360. through those

  1361. passages that I

  1362. quoted to you

  1363. from Acts and

  1364. you'd see in

  1365. every context

  1366. there was

  1367. persecution.

  1368. And we

  1369. don't like

  1370. what's

  1371. different.

  1372. And so

  1373. Paul says

  1374. the apostle

  1375. he says

  1376. all who

  1377. would live

  1378. godly in

  1379. Christ Jesus

  1380. will suffer

  1381. persecution.

  1382. The world

  1383. won't persecute

  1384. you if you're

  1385. good.

  1386. It'll pat

  1387. you on the

  1388. back.

  1389. The world

  1390. won't persecute

  1391. you if you're

  1392. noble.

  1393. It'll give

  1394. you an MBE.

  1395. It can

  1396. appreciate that

  1397. but godliness

  1398. is something

  1399. different.

  1400. And we're

  1401. not talking

  1402. about Reuben

  1403. growing up

  1404. with good

  1405. morals or

  1406. about kind

  1407. living,

  1408. about being

  1409. decent.

  1410. But godliness

  1411. is so

  1412. radically

  1413. different that

  1414. the world

  1415. will not

  1416. tolerate it.

  1417. And when

  1418. they saw

  1419. it in the

  1420. Lord Jesus

  1421. they smashed

  1422. it on the

  1423. cross.

  1424. And Jesus

  1425. says if they

  1426. crucify me

  1427. they will

  1428. crucify you.

  1429. And so at

  1430. baptism there

  1431. is something

  1432. isn't it?

  1433. It's funny when

  1434. the baby gets

  1435. covered in

  1436. water.

  1437. It's a

  1438. beautiful thing

  1439. but it's also

  1440. a really

  1441. really serious

  1442. thing.

  1443. baptism is

  1444. a putting

  1445. off of

  1446. one way

  1447. of life

  1448. and bringing

  1449. him into

  1450. a new

  1451. way of

  1452. life.

  1453. And so

  1454. Aaron and

  1455. Bexley you

  1456. will need

  1457. to train

  1458. up Reuben.

  1459. You can

  1460. teach without

  1461. training

  1462. but training

  1463. must involve

  1464. teaching.

  1465. You will

  1466. show him

  1467. and model

  1468. it and

  1469. live it

  1470. out a

  1471. radically

  1472. different

  1473. Christian

  1474. way.

  1475. And so

  1476. don't be

  1477. afraid to

  1478. be different

  1479. little

  1480. man.

  1481. Don't

  1482. allow your

  1483. family life

  1484. to be

  1485. dictated

  1486. by the

  1487. world

  1488. so that

  1489. you become

  1490. like everyone

  1491. else.

  1492. Live it

  1493. out as a

  1494. Christian.

  1495. Train the

  1496. child in

  1497. the way

  1498. that he

  1499. should go.

  1500. Model it

  1501. and pattern

  1502. it and

  1503. live it

  1504. out.

  1505. And God

  1506. says I

  1507. promise you

  1508. that when

  1509. he's old

  1510. despite all

  1511. the opposition

  1512. despite

  1513. everything that

  1514. is against

  1515. him and

  1516. telling him

  1517. otherwise

  1518. and all

  1519. the

  1520. pressures

  1521. God

  1522. says my

  1523. grace is

  1524. stronger than

  1525. all that.

  1526. I promise

  1527. you.

  1528. I promise

  1529. you.

  1530. Martin

  1531. Luther the

  1532. German

  1533. reformer

  1534. as I

  1535. finish.

  1536. He's a

  1537. man who

  1538. kind of

  1539. suffered

  1540. incredibly.

  1541. He's in

  1542. his room

  1543. working once

  1544. and he

  1545. said it

  1546. was as if

  1547. the devil

  1548. was in

  1549. the room

  1550. with me.

  1551. And he

  1552. was accusing

  1553. me and

  1554. tempting me

  1555. of all

  1556. sorts of

  1557. things.

  1558. He felt

  1559. he was

  1560. going out

  1561. of his

  1562. mind.

  1563. And Luther

  1564. picked up

  1565. the inkwell

  1566. and he

  1567. threw it

  1568. across the

  1569. room.

  1570. And he

  1571. shouted at

  1572. the devil.

  1573. He says

  1574. this.

  1575. He says

  1576. I'm a

  1577. baptized

  1578. man.

  1579. I am

  1580. baptized.

  1581. I'm

  1582. baptized.

  1583. God has

  1584. made promises

  1585. to me

  1586. in my

  1587. baptism.

  1588. I say I

  1589. go to the

  1590. pub tomorrow

  1591. night.

  1592. I've got a

  1593. meeting tomorrow

  1594. night.

  1595. So I won't.

  1596. But I'm

  1597. there and

  1598. these very

  1599. attractive girls

  1600. come and

  1601. talk to me.

  1602. You probably

  1603. think oh

  1604. it's very

  1605. unusual.

  1606. I'm

  1607. standing at

  1608. the bar.

  1609. What do

  1610. you do at

  1611. that point?

  1612. I don't

  1613. know what

  1614. you do at

  1615. that point.

  1616. But what

  1617. do you

  1618. do?

  1619. I go

  1620. like this.

  1621. I'm a

  1622. married man.

  1623. You hold up

  1624. your wedding

  1625. ring.

  1626. If you're

  1627. ever in a

  1628. pub and

  1629. you see

  1630. somebody

  1631. taking off

  1632. their

  1633. wedding ring,

  1634. don't go

  1635. near that

  1636. person.

  1637. Because this

  1638. ring is a

  1639. sign of

  1640. God's

  1641. promises.

  1642. I'm a

  1643. baptized

  1644. man.

  1645. God's

  1646. love.

  1647. God's

  1648. love.

  1649. So I

  1650. hope some

  1651. of you are

  1652. thinking about

  1653. becoming

  1654. Christians but

  1655. I need to

  1656. tell you that

  1657. sometimes it's

  1658. pretty hostile to

  1659. be a Christian

  1660. like it was

  1661. for Martin

  1662. Luther.

  1663. And you

  1664. remind yourself

  1665. remind yourself

  1666. Reuben in years

  1667. to come I'm

  1668. baptized.

  1669. I'm engaged

  1670. to be Christ.

  1671. I've been put

  1672. in Christ's

  1673. way.

  1674. I'm not going

  1675. to go any

  1676. other way.

  1677. I renounce

  1678. the world,

  1679. the flesh,

  1680. and the

  1681. devil.

  1682. I'm Christ.

  1683. I'm a

  1684. baptized man.

  1685. Let's pray.
