  1. To be seated and turn, if you will, to Ruth chapter 2.

    Ruth 2 chapter mention

  2. ! Ruth chapter 2.

    Ruth 2 chapter mention

  3. Which, if you've got a Bible, I think it's 222.

  4. What a difference a day can make in a person's life.

  5. What a difference a day can make in a person's life.

  6. One April day in 1945, Harry Truman wrote to his mother,

  7. I'd better hurry to the White House to see the President.

  8. When I got there, I found out that I was the President.

  9. Moses, do you remember that story from the book of Exodus?

  10. One day he's out in the back of beyond, out in the bush, tending his sheep.

  11. It was one day like any other day, and yet that day, God spoke to him out of a burning bush,

  12. and he became the Savior of Israel.

  13. He became the one to carry his people out of Egypt.

  14. Elisha, do you remember him?

  15. He was plowing a field when suddenly, out of the blue, Elijah turns up and recruits him to be his successor.

  16. Andrew, Peter, James, and John, they were fishermen, mending their nets on the side of the shore.

  17. And Jesus comes along, and he recruits them to be fishers of men.

  18. Matthew was in the office, a tax collector.

  19. Just an ordinary day like any other day.

  20. And Jesus came and called him, and his life was changed.

  21. What a difference a day can make.

  22. And what a difference this day makes in the life of Ruth.

  23. It's a very important day.

  24. It's arguably one of the most important days in her life.

  25. Because this was the day she meets her husband-to-be.

  26. Bachelor boy, Boaz of Bethlehem.

  27. He's introduced to us in a very interesting way, isn't he?

  28. You can almost hear the violins playing in Ruth chapter 2.

    Ruth 2 chapter mention

  29. It's a spring day.

  30. We're told that at the end of chapter 1.

  31. It's the beginning of the barley harvest.

  32. It's about late April.

  33. And Ruth has gone out into the fields, and look what happens.

  34. Look what it says.

  35. In verse 3, it says,

  36. Fancy that.

  37. What a stroke of luck.

  38. The writer wants you to see that right at the start of the chapter.

  39. He seems to be emphasizing it.

  40. Look at verse 3 again.

  41. So she set out and went and gleaned in the field after the reapers,

  42. and she happened to come to the part of the field belonging to Boaz,

  43. who was the clan of Elimelech.

  44. Ruth's father-in-law.

  45. Now notice how he goes on.

  46. Behold.

  47. Behold.

  48. What are the chances of that?

  49. Behold, Boaz turns up from Bethlehem.

  50. It so happened.

  51. But you and the writer to this story,

  52. we know that things don't just happen, don't we?

  53. That God is working out his purposes here as well.

  54. And so that's the first point.

  55. I want us to see the first point is God's hand at work.

  56. Look at verses 1 to 7.

  57. It's a kind of spoiler alert.

  58. Look what it says.

  59. Now Naomi had a relative of her husband's,

  60. a worthy man of the clan of Elimelech,

  61. whose name was Boaz.

  62. And so the storyteller drops you a hint.

  63. He's telling us something that Ruth doesn't know at this point.

  64. He's kind of flagging it.

  65. It's very, very good storytelling.

  66. He's giving us a heads up.

  67. Watch out.

  68. What is going to happen?

  69. Here is a bloke coming.

  70. And keep your eyes on this guy.

  71. And Ruth, the Moabite, said to Naomi,

  72. let me go to the field

  73. and glean among the ears of grain after him,

  74. in whose sight I shall found favor.

  75. And she said to her, go, my daughter.

  76. So she set out and went and gleaned in the field after the reapers.

  77. And she happened to come to the part of the field belonging to Boaz

  78. from the clan of Elimelech.

  79. He's a wealthy man, this guy, Boaz.

  80. He's a good guy.

  81. He treated people fairly and well.

  82. Perhaps most important of all, though,

  83. he was a relative, a close relative,

  84. of Naomi's dead husband, Elimelech.

  85. It's a bit like a Charles Dickens story.

  86. Set in the grinding poverty of Victorian England,

  87. there's always, isn't there, a rich relative that turns up.

  88. And here's the rich relative.

  89. Two poverty-stricken widows, destitute widows.

  90. They're on the edge of desperation and despair.

  91. And behold, what are the chances?

  92. Here's a rich relative.

  93. Here is someone who's able to help them, Uncle Boaz.

  94. And not only is he a good bloke, he's a godly man.

  95. And so can you see the hand of God

  96. in the way this story is developing?

  97. It's a Charlie Brown cartoon.

  98. And Charlie Brown is sitting in a room

  99. and he's reading a book.

  100. And he's holding the book right in front of his eyes.

  101. And Lucy comes into the room and she says,

  102. Charlie Brown, what are you doing?

  103. And Charlie Brown says,

  104. I'm reading between the lines.

  105. And the writer of this story wants you to do that.

  106. He wants you to understand that God is at work here.

  107. Beneath this everyday story of country folk,

  108. there's a much bigger story.

  109. And that is true of your story and my story.

  110. Behind all the random things that have happened to you this week

  111. and all the frustrations that you're facing in life

  112. and all the disappointments and all the rest of it,

  113. there's a bigger thing happening.

  114. The sovereign hand of God is at work.

  115. And he is working out his purposes

  116. and he is working all things to gather for the good

  117. of those who loved him

  118. and are called according to his purposes.

  119. And it's almost as if, isn't it,

  120. the writer of Ruth is putting this up on a split screen.

  121. Because you see the action in the story,

  122. but we also see behind the scenes.

  123. And God is at work.

  124. Look at verse two.

  125. Let me go to the field, Ruth says to Naomi,

  126. and glean among the ears of grain after him,

  127. in whose sight I shall find favor.

  128. And she said to her, go, my daughter.

  129. So she set out and went and gleaned in the field

  130. after the reapers.

  131. And she happened to come to the part of the field

  132. belonging to Boaz,

  133. who was the clan from the clan of Elimelech.

  134. John Flavel was one of the Puritan writers.

  135. He's got a little book called The Mystery of Providence.

  136. And he says, the providence of God,

  137. which is God's plan and purpose,

  138. the providence of God is like the Hebrew language.

  139. It can only be understood backwards.

  140. And so if you've got a Hebrew Bible here this morning,

  141. you've got to read it from the back to the front.

  142. It's a back to front language.

  143. And the providence of God is like that.

  144. The hymn writer says this,

  145. with mercy and with judgment,

  146. my web of time he wove.

  147. And ere the dews of sorrow were lusted with his love,

  148. I'll bless the hand that guided,

  149. I'll bless the heart that planned,

  150. when throned where glory dwelleth,

  151. in Emmanuel's land.

  152. Because it's not until we get there.

  153. It's not until the end of the story.

  154. It's not until you're in Emmanuel's land

  155. that you can look back at all the things

  156. that have happened to you

  157. and see that God's hand was guiding you.

  158. But it's more than God's hand guiding you.

  159. Do you know what it's like

  160. when you're in a big city

  161. and you want directions?

  162. It's a bit different now, isn't it?

  163. We've all got phones.

  164. But you go to a city

  165. and you've got no idea where you are

  166. and somehow you're sat there

  167. or your phone isn't working.

  168. And so you go to pull over

  169. and you ask,

  170. you wind down the window

  171. and you ask someone on the pavement

  172. and you ask,

  173. can you tell me how to get to such and such a place?

  174. And if you're like me,

  175. you listen, don't you?

  176. But it's just a complete overload of information.

  177. And you wind up the window

  178. after he's finally finished

  179. and you've immediately forgotten

  180. what he's just told you.

  181. And you pretend you nod at him

  182. and thank him,

  183. but you go to the next street,

  184. pull over,

  185. and do exactly the same thing.

  186. But what a relief it is, isn't it?

  187. When somebody reads the situation,

  188. when they see that expression in your eyes

  189. and they read that look of utter bewilderment

  190. and they have pity on you

  191. and they say,

  192. well, I'll get in the car next to you

  193. and I'll take you there if you want.

  194. What a relief that is, isn't it?

  195. You see, there's something better than guidance.

  196. God hasn't just given you a map of directions.

  197. He hasn't just given you Google Earth

  198. to show you the way through life.

  199. God hasn't given you a computer readout

  200. so that you can follow those instructions.

  201. What has God done?

  202. God has actually gone into the car next to you.

  203. That's what the good news of the Lord Jesus is all about.

  204. God has already said that.

  205. God has already said that.

  206. God has already said that.

  207. That's who the Holy Spirit is.

  208. He is a comforter.

  209. He is a comforter.

  210. And that is what is happening here.

  211. He is our guide.

  212. He is God himself

  213. who's gone into the car with us.

  214. And he's taking you to your destination.

  215. And Ruth doesn't necessarily see

  216. how all these things are happening

  217. on this particular day.

  218. Ruth doesn't see how these things

  219. are going to fit together

  220. any more than you or I do

  221. in the things that happen in our lives.

  222. But God's hand was upon her.

  223. So that's the first point of seeing God's hand.

  224. But secondly,

  225. she knows God's protection.

  226. Verses 8 to 12.

  227. She knows God's protection.

  228. It's an old story, isn't it?

  229. It's about 3,000 years old.

  230. The social context

  231. and the customs of Ruth 1 and 2

  232. are very different than our society.

  233. But there's some powerful lessons here.

  234. It's things for us to learn as a church.

  235. For us to learn as a country.

  236. I love what it says in verse 12.

  237. It's in many ways the key verse

  238. in the book of Ruth.

  239. when Boaz first sets his eyes on her

  240. and says,

  241. Who is that woman?

  242. Where does that woman come from?

  243. And they explain to him,

  244. This is Ruth the Moabitess

  245. who's come back with Naomi from Moab.

  246. And he says,

  247. Yeah, I've heard about her.

  248. I've heard her talk about

  249. this woman Ruth.

  250. He says to her,

  251. You are the one who has come to shelter

  252. under the wings of the Almighty.

  253. Isn't that a lovely description?

  254. What a testimony Ruth must have had

  255. in that community.

  256. That she'd not just come out of loyalty

  257. to her mother-in-law.

  258. She didn't just come out of love

  259. and loyalty to Naomi.

  260. She'd seen something

  261. in Naomi's kindness to her.

  262. She'd seen something

  263. of the covenant kindness

  264. of God to his people.

  265. She'd seen in Naomi

  266. a brokenness.

  267. Her tears of repentance.

  268. She saw something

  269. of the heart of God

  270. to forgive sinners.

  271. And so Ruth is drawn

  272. to come and shelter

  273. under the wings

  274. of this God.

  275. It's beautiful, isn't it?

  276. And she finds protection there.

  277. And I want to tell you three things

  278. and suggest to you three things

  279. she finds protection

  280. three different ways.

  281. She finds protection

  282. through the state provision.

  283. It's quite interesting, isn't it?

  284. She finds protection

  285. through the state provision

  286. that were in place

  287. in Israel.

  288. Ruth is doing

  289. the equivalent

  290. of signing on

  291. in the Old Testament.

  292. She's signing on

  293. in Old Testament terms.

  294. You see,

  295. God in his law

  296. had made provision

  297. for people like Ruth

  298. and Naomi.

  299. It was the gleaning laws

  300. in the Old Testament.

  301. You can read about them

  302. in a number of places

  303. in Leviticus and Deuteronomy.

  304. Let me read to you

  305. from Leviticus 19.

  306. When you reap the harvest

  307. of your land,

  308. the farmer is told,

  309. you shall not reap

  310. your field right up

  311. to the edge.

  312. Neither shall you

  313. gather the gleanings

  314. after your harvest

  315. and you shall not

  316. strip your vineyard bare.

  317. Neither shall you

  318. gather the fallen grapes

  319. of your vineyard.

  320. You shall leave them.

  321. Why shall you leave them?

  322. For the poor

  323. and the sojourner,

  324. the refugee.

  325. The sojourner is the poor

  326. and the poor

  327. and the refugee

  328. is the foreigner.

  329. There's the reason given.

  330. And it's not some

  331. arbitrary piece of legislation

  332. where told,

  333. why should we do this?

  334. God says,

  335. for I am the Lord your God.

  336. God.

  337. That is why,

  338. in other words,

  339. that law was enshrined

  340. in the law of Israel

  341. as a reflection

  342. of the character of God.

  343. And so the people of God,

  344. Israel,

  345. was to be a caring society

  346. because our God

  347. is a God who cares.

  348. He cares about refugees.

  349. He cares about aliens.

  350. He cares about foreigners.

  351. He cares about widows.

  352. He cares about orphans.

  353. He cares about the marginalized

  354. in society.

  355. And he makes provision

  356. for them

  357. in the law of Israel.

  358. So do you remember

  359. what the psalmist says?

  360. He says,

  361. I am poor and needy

  362. and the Lord ignores me.

  363. And the Lord doesn't

  364. give me a second chance.

  365. And the Lord just

  366. walks past me.

  367. Is that what it says?

  368. No,

  369. it says this,

  370. I am poor and needy

  371. and the Lord despises me.

  372. He looks down his nose at me.

  373. The Lord thinks,

  374. what a pathetic creature I am.

  375. Why doesn't that person

  376. get their act together?

  377. No,

  378. the psalmist says,

  379. I am poor and needy.

  380. And guess what?

  381. The Lord who made

  382. the heavens and earth,

  383. the God who keeps

  384. this incredibly massive

  385. universe ticking,

  386. thinks about me.

  387. He thinks about me.

  388. And in his sovereign providence,

  389. he has enshrined

  390. that his kindness

  391. and his care

  392. should be put into

  393. the law of his people Israel.

  394. And in his sovereign providence,

  395. he has brought

  396. these two widows,

  397. these two Moabitists,

  398. these despised foreigners

  399. to Israel

  400. at the beginning

  401. of the barley harvest

  402. at just the right time.

  403. For her to avail herself

  404. of this particular provision,

  405. it's beautiful,

  406. isn't it?

  407. So we read in verse 2,

  408. let me go to the field

  409. and glean

  410. among the ears of grain

  411. after him

  412. in whose sight

  413. I shall find favor.

  414. Let's do this,

  415. she says.

  416. The law says

  417. there's a provision

  418. and so let me go

  419. and glean.

  420. And so you ask yourself,

  421. how did Ruth know this?

  422. Well, the only way

  423. she could have known that

  424. was Naomi must have

  425. told her.

  426. It's interesting,

  427. isn't it?

  428. She says,

  429. let's go,

  430. let's go,

  431. she says,

  432. to the field

  433. and glean

  434. among the ears

  435. of grain

  436. after him

  437. in whose sight

  438. I shall find favor.

  439. The law was there,

  440. the provision was there,

  441. but not everyone

  442. took it seriously.

  443. It's a sad comment,

  444. isn't it?

  445. On how things were

  446. spiritually in Israel.

  447. How poorly

  448. they treated.

  449. Sad comment

  450. on what goes on

  451. in many churches.

  452. how poorly

  453. we represent

  454. the heart of God.

  455. To people

  456. who come in amongst us,

  457. let me go and do

  458. what God has told me

  459. I can do

  460. if I can find someone

  461. who will show me mercy

  462. and favor.

  463. Some maybe

  464. would have refused

  465. her point blank

  466. to glean in her field,

  467. in their field.

  468. Others may have

  469. begrudgingly

  470. let her do it

  471. but made her feel

  472. a bit of a basket case.

  473. If you've ever

  474. had a sign

  475. on the dole,

  476. you might perhaps

  477. begin to know

  478. how she feels.

  479. It can be

  480. a humiliating

  481. and an undignified

  482. experience,

  483. can't it?

  484. Sometimes

  485. because of the

  486. attitudes of people

  487. that you know,

  488. we should know better.

  489. Sometimes

  490. the cold-hearted

  491. bureaucracy

  492. of filling in

  493. the forms

  494. and being treated

  495. like a number

  496. or a statistic,

  497. it can be

  498. a humiliating

  499. and undignified

  500. experiences.

  501. If your circumstances

  502. are such that

  503. you need

  504. some kind

  505. of provision,

  506. there's no

  507. disgrace in that

  508. at all.

  509. You can do that

  510. with a good conscience,

  511. without shame

  512. and with full

  513. Christian dignity.

  514. And there may

  515. well be people

  516. who abuse

  517. the system

  518. but that's

  519. not the point.

  520. If you genuinely

  521. need that

  522. kind of assistance,

  523. it's not an

  524. ungodly thing

  525. to take advantage

  526. of it.

  527. Now it is

  528. interesting

  529. that in the

  530. Bible,

  531. there is never

  532. just a handout.

  533. There's never

  534. just goods

  535. or money,

  536. cash given.

  537. There is

  538. always

  539. a kind of

  540. working for

  541. what you're

  542. given,

  543. a showing

  544. that there is

  545. a value in it.

  546. And so it's

  547. never

  548. just a kind

  549. of handout.

  550. That's for

  551. another sermon.

  552. It is part

  553. of the way

  554. that God

  555. brings his

  556. kindness to

  557. people.

  558. I think it's

  559. interesting in

  560. Israel that

  561. there's never

  562. a handout.

  563. You never

  564. see that folks

  565. were kind of

  566. given things

  567. or money

  568. and just

  569. sent away.

  570. There was a

  571. need for

  572. working them.

  573. Now,

  574. she found

  575. protection

  576. through the

  577. provision of

  578. God's law,

  579. but she found

  580. protection in

  581. this man,

  582. Boaz,

  583. too,

  584. didn't she?

  585. Despite

  586. this beautiful

  587. law,

  588. the gleaning

  589. law didn't

  590. always turn

  591. out very

  592. well.

  593. For

  594. vulnerable

  595. and

  596. marginalized

  597. people like

  598. Ruth,

  599. some of

  600. those people,

  601. when they

  602. went to work

  603. in the fields,

  604. no doubt

  605. they were

  606. taken advantage

  607. of and

  608. abused.

  609. A young

  610. woman like

  611. Ruth,

  612. who's obviously

  613. very attractive,

  614. she's probably

  615. about 10 or

  616. 20 years younger

  617. than Boaz,

  618. in her 20s,

  619. and she's

  620. wandering around

  621. the fields

  622. of Israel

  623. during the

  624. time of the

  625. judges.

  626. She's in

  627. danger of

  628. being attacked,

  629. assaulted,

  630. raped,

  631. left for

  632. dead.

  633. You've only

  634. got to read

  635. the book of

  636. Judges to

  637. realize that's

  638. the kind

  639. of time

  640. they were

  641. living in.

  642. They were

  643. dangerous

  644. days.

  645. And that

  646. is why

  647. Boaz is

  648. so concerned

  649. for welfare.

  650. So Boaz

  651. said to

  652. Ruth in

  653. verse 8,

  654. now listen

  655. my daughter,

  656. do not go to

  657. glean in another

  658. field or leave

  659. this one,

  660. but keep

  661. close to my

  662. young women.

  663. And then he

  664. adds in

  665. verse 9,

  666. let your eyes

  667. be on the

  668. field that

  669. they are

  670. reaping and

  671. go after

  672. them.

  673. Have I

  674. not charged

  675. the young

  676. men not

  677. to touch

  678. you?

  679. Don't let

  680. them lay

  681. a hand

  682. on you.

  683. I've

  684. told them

  685. that.

  686. And in

  687. verse 15,

  688. he says to

  689. the men

  690. who work

  691. in the

  692. field,

  693. don't

  694. reproach

  695. her,

  696. don't

  697. mock

  698. her,

  699. don't

  700. embarrass

  701. her,

  702. don't

  703. humiliate

  704. her.

  705. The word

  706. there has

  707. got sexual

  708. overtones.

  709. Treat her

  710. with proper

  711. respect,

  712. no coarse

  713. joking,

  714. no wolf

  715. whistling,

  716. no improper

  717. behaviour.

  718. Do you see

  719. what God

  720. has done?

  721. God has

  722. brought this

  723. girl to

  724. Israel into

  725. this system

  726. which characterises

  727. and displays

  728. the character

  729. of God.

  730. So that she

  731. can take hold

  732. on the provision

  733. that God

  734. has made.

  735. But not

  736. only has

  737. God made

  738. provision for

  739. her,

  740. he's raised

  741. up a

  742. champion

  743. for her.

  744. And we'll

  745. see more

  746. than a

  747. champion

  748. because Boaz

  749. is a good

  750. and a godly

  751. man who's

  752. willing to

  753. help,

  754. who's full

  755. of God's

  756. kindness,

  757. and who's

  758. wanting to

  759. show that

  760. kindness.

  761. Those who

  762. know mercy

  763. show mercy.

  764. And so

  765. there is a

  766. sense,

  767. isn't there,

  768. where we

  769. shouldn't have

  770. to legislate

  771. for a kind

  772. of diaconal

  773. ministry in

  774. the church.

  775. like IPC,

  776. it should be

  777. happening

  778. naturally,

  779. and praise

  780. God,

  781. it often

  782. does.

  783. As it

  784. did in

  785. the Acts

  786. of the

  787. Apostles,

  788. where they

  789. had all

  790. things in

  791. common,

  792. they shared

  793. their goods,

  794. they were

  795. generous with

  796. one another,

  797. they'd

  798. experienced

  799. the mercy

  800. of God,

  801. and they

  802. couldn't but

  803. help share

  804. the mercy

  805. of God

  806. with others.

  807. And so

  808. here's a

  809. godly man

  810. called

  811. Boaz,

  812. who knows

  813. God's

  814. kindness in

  815. his own

  816. life.

  817. And now

  818. he shows

  819. that kindness

  820. to others.

  821. How sweet

  822. the name

  823. of Boaz

  824. sounds in

  825. her poor

  826. gleaner's

  827. ears.

  828. It soothes

  829. her sorrows,

  830. heals her

  831. wounds,

  832. and drives

  833. away her

  834. fears.

  835. She finds

  836. protection in

  837. the law,

  838. she finds

  839. protection in

  840. Boaz,

  841. and most

  842. beautifully

  843. of all,

  844. she finds

  845. protection in

  846. the Lord.

  847. She's come

  848. to shelter

  849. under his

  850. wings.

  851. It's a

  852. beautiful image.

  853. Some of you

  854. will remember

  855. Deuteronomy

  856. 32,

  857. and Moses

  858. sings there.

  859. And Moses

  860. celebrates

  861. God's

  862. kindness

  863. to his

  864. people,

  865. and he

  866. does so

  867. in terms

  868. of this

  869. image.

  870. In a

  871. desert

  872. land,

  873. he found

  874. him.

  875. In a

  876. barren and

  877. howling

  878. wilderness,

  879. he shielded

  880. him and

  881. cared for

  882. him like

  883. an eagle

  884. that spreads

  885. out its

  886. wings.

  887. It's a

  888. beautiful

  889. picture.

  890. That is

  891. what God

  892. was to

  893. Israel.

  894. that God

  895. had found

  896. Egypt in

  897. slavery.

  898. He spread

  899. his wings.

  900. He stirred

  901. up the

  902. nest as

  903. in his

  904. wings.

  905. And he

  906. carried them

  907. into the

  908. promised land.

  909. It's a

  910. beautiful

  911. picture.

  912. You see it

  913. in the

  914. words of

  915. Jesus.

  916. As he

  917. approaches

  918. Jerusalem,

  919. he says,

  920. Oh

  921. Jerusalem,

  922. Jerusalem,

  923. the city

  924. that killed

  925. the prophets

  926. and stoned

  927. those who

  928. are sent

  929. to it.

  930. How often

  931. would I

  932. have gathered

  933. your children

  934. together like

  935. a hen

  936. gathers her

  937. brood under

  938. her wings,

  939. but you

  940. were not

  941. willing.

  942. Jesus

  943. shows the

  944. instincts of

  945. a mother.

  946. And that

  947. is the

  948. heart of

  949. God.

  950. That is the

  951. character of

  952. God displayed

  953. supremely,

  954. of course,

  955. in Jesus.

  956. And so

  957. now here

  958. is this

  959. foreigner,

  960. this

  961. Moabitess.

  962. And let me

  963. remind you,

  964. according to

  965. the New

  966. Testament,

  967. apart from

  968. maybe one

  969. or two

  970. of us,

  971. we're all

  972. foreigners.

  973. We're all

  974. aliens.

  975. We're all

  976. strangers to

  977. the covenant

  978. and its

  979. promises to

  980. the common

  981. wealth of

  982. the people

  983. of God.

  984. But God,

  985. through the

  986. Lord Jesus

  987. and his

  988. blood shed

  989. on the cross

  990. has brought

  991. us in.

  992. That's what

  993. he's done

  994. with Moses.

  995. He's brought

  996. him in

  997. amongst his

  998. people.

  999. He's placed

  1000. his arms

  1001. around him

  1002. and sheltered

  1003. him under

  1004. his wings.

  1005. Is that

  1006. where you

  1007. are spiritually?

  1008. Have you

  1009. come to

  1010. shelter under

  1011. the wings

  1012. of the

  1013. God who

  1014. has revealed

  1015. himself in

  1016. the face

  1017. of Jesus?

  1018. Where else

  1019. would you

  1020. like to be

  1021. in a world

  1022. like ours

  1023. today?

  1024. Than amongst

  1025. God's people

  1026. sheltering under

  1027. the wings of

  1028. the Almighty?

  1029. God's

  1030. God's

  1031. protection.

  1032. God's

  1033. protection.

  1034. And thirdly,

  1035. experiencing

  1036. God's

  1037. protection.

  1038. Verse 13

  1039. to the end.

  1040. There's not

  1041. a lot of

  1042. kindness in

  1043. our world,

  1044. is there?

  1045. There's a

  1046. philosopher of

  1047. the name,

  1048. I would

  1049. normally

  1050. pronounce it

  1051. Alan Bottom,

  1052. but I'm

  1053. pretty certain

  1054. that that

  1055. is not

  1056. the way

  1057. to pronounce

  1058. it,

  1059. is it?

  1060. Alan

  1061. Dubuaton?

  1062. Is that right?

  1063. Yeah, yeah, yeah.

  1064. I think he's an

  1065. agnostic rather

  1066. than atheist.

  1067. He's a philosopher,

  1068. he's written a

  1069. number of books,

  1070. and one of the

  1071. books he's

  1072. written is

  1073. Religion for

  1074. Atheists.

  1075. And in that

  1076. book he

  1077. suggests that

  1078. atheists,

  1079. instead of

  1080. mocking

  1081. religion,

  1082. that agnostics

  1083. and atheists

  1084. could learn a

  1085. lot from

  1086. religion.

  1087. religion.

  1088. He says

  1089. they are

  1090. packed with

  1091. ideas on

  1092. how to

  1093. live and

  1094. how to

  1095. arrange our

  1096. societies.

  1097. And in

  1098. that book

  1099. Dubuaton

  1100. has got a

  1101. whole chapter

  1102. on kindness.

  1103. He's very

  1104. concerned,

  1105. this agnostic

  1106. man,

  1107. about the

  1108. lack of

  1109. kindness in

  1110. our society.

  1111. And we

  1112. see it,

  1113. don't we,

  1114. in the

  1115. ironic

  1116. nastiness

  1117. of so

  1118. much so-called

  1119. comedy.

  1120. The comedy

  1121. of cruelty

  1122. where the

  1123. disabled and

  1124. the vulnerable

  1125. are made

  1126. the butt

  1127. of cheap

  1128. jokes.

  1129. You see

  1130. it in

  1131. the humiliation

  1132. of real

  1133. life people

  1134. in what

  1135. they call

  1136. reality TV.

  1137. You see

  1138. it online

  1139. on social

  1140. media.

  1141. You hear

  1142. of it,

  1143. don't you,

  1144. in reports

  1145. of elder

  1146. abuse in

  1147. nursing homes

  1148. and hospitals.

  1149. And he

  1150. says something

  1151. really interesting

  1152. for an

  1153. agnostic to

  1154. say.

  1155. He says,

  1156. our deepest

  1157. wish is

  1158. that someone

  1159. would come

  1160. along and

  1161. save us

  1162. from ourselves.

  1163. Isn't that

  1164. interesting?

  1165. It's very

  1166. interesting for

  1167. an agnostic

  1168. to say.

  1169. Our deepest

  1170. wish is that

  1171. someone would

  1172. come along

  1173. and save

  1174. us from

  1175. ourselves.

  1176. And that's

  1177. what the

  1178. book of

  1179. Ruth is

  1180. about.

  1181. Do you

  1182. see what

  1183. Naomi says

  1184. in verse

  1185. 20 when

  1186. she hears

  1187. about Boaz's

  1188. kindness to

  1189. Ruth?

  1190. Ruth is

  1191. coming home

  1192. now.

  1193. No doubt

  1194. she's been

  1195. out in the

  1196. morning.

  1197. She didn't

  1198. know whether

  1199. she'd be able

  1200. to scrape

  1201. together enough

  1202. grain for

  1203. them to live

  1204. through another

  1205. day.

  1206. There'd

  1207. been a

  1208. famine in

  1209. the land.

  1210. There was

  1211. no one

  1212. to help

  1213. them.

  1214. She didn't

  1215. know whether

  1216. she'd have

  1217. enough food

  1218. and then

  1219. here she

  1220. comes.

  1221. She comes

  1222. home late

  1223. at night

  1224. and she

  1225. is staggering

  1226. under the

  1227. weight of

  1228. the bag

  1229. of grain

  1230. that she's

  1231. carrying.

  1232. And Boaz

  1233. has not

  1234. only been

  1235. kind in

  1236. allowing her

  1237. to sort

  1238. of glean in

  1239. her field

  1240. but he

  1241. said to

  1242. his men

  1243. just drop

  1244. some corn.

  1245. Pick a few

  1246. stalks out.

  1247. Leave them

  1248. behind for

  1249. her.

  1250. And she's

  1251. allowed to

  1252. follow the

  1253. reapers.

  1254. She's not

  1255. sent to

  1256. the margins.

  1257. She's allowed

  1258. to go behind

  1259. the reapers

  1260. and pick up

  1261. the leftovers

  1262. and there's

  1263. much more

  1264. than leftovers

  1265. than there

  1266. would be

  1267. normally

  1268. because Boaz

  1269. has said

  1270. leave them.

  1271. And she

  1272. comes home

  1273. staggering

  1274. under this

  1275. massive sack

  1276. of grain.

  1277. We're not

  1278. told exactly

  1279. how much

  1280. but it's

  1281. a huge

  1282. amount

  1283. and Naomi

  1284. can't believe

  1285. it.

  1286. Where did

  1287. you get all

  1288. that from

  1289. she says?

  1290. And Ruth

  1291. begins to

  1292. tell her

  1293. and you

  1294. can almost

  1295. hear the

  1296. cogs

  1297. turning over

  1298. in Naomi's

  1299. mind.

  1300. As soon

  1301. as the

  1302. name Boaz

  1303. is mentioned

  1304. she says

  1305. verse 20

  1306. the Lord

  1307. bless him.

  1308. He's not

  1309. stopped showing

  1310. his kindness

  1311. to the living

  1312. and the dead.

  1313. I think

  1314. verse 20

  1315. in the ESV

  1316. they've tried

  1317. to tidy it up

  1318. a little bit

  1319. the version

  1320. that you've

  1321. got in front

  1322. of you.

  1323. But it's

  1324. a little bit

  1325. more ambiguous

  1326. than it

  1327. reads in

  1328. the ESV.

  1329. Because in

  1330. verse 20

  1331. we're not

  1332. absolutely

  1333. certain

  1334. is she

  1335. talking

  1336. about

  1337. Boaz?

  1338. Now Boaz

  1339. has shown

  1340. kindness

  1341. to the

  1342. living

  1343. he's shown

  1344. kindness

  1345. to Ruth

  1346. but it

  1347. seems

  1348. that there's

  1349. something

  1350. more going

  1351. on in

  1352. verse 20.

  1353. I think

  1354. the penny

  1355. is beginning

  1356. to drop

  1357. for her.

  1358. In verse 20

  1359. it's this

  1360. and Naomi

  1361. said to her

  1362. daughter-in-law

  1363. may you be

  1364. blessed by

  1365. the Lord

  1366. whose

  1367. kindness

  1368. has not

  1369. forsaken

  1370. the living

  1371. or the

  1372. dead.

  1373. Whose

  1374. kindness?

  1375. Do you

  1376. know who that

  1377. man is

  1378. Ruth?

  1379. He's our

  1380. kinsman

  1381. redeemer.

  1382. He is a

  1383. close

  1384. relative.

  1385. Go to the

  1386. hospital

  1387. you have to

  1388. fill out a

  1389. form before

  1390. you have an

  1391. operation and

  1392. it talks about

  1393. the next of

  1394. kin.

  1395. And you have

  1396. to put a

  1397. phone number

  1398. down.

  1399. And then you

  1400. stop to think

  1401. don't you?

  1402. Well if I'm

  1403. in a spot

  1404. of trouble

  1405. will that

  1406. person be

  1407. actually able

  1408. to help

  1409. me?

  1410. If you

  1411. find yourself

  1412. in an

  1413. American

  1414. hospital

  1415. somebody's

  1416. going to

  1417. have to

  1418. pay the

  1419. bills.

  1420. Or you

  1421. find yourself

  1422. in a

  1423. spot of

  1424. trouble

  1425. your next

  1426. of kin

  1427. is who

  1428. you would

  1429. turn to

  1430. and they've

  1431. got to be

  1432. able to

  1433. help you.

  1434. And there's

  1435. a kind of

  1436. provision

  1437. in that.

  1438. But it's

  1439. codified in

  1440. the law of

  1441. Israel as

  1442. we'll see

  1443. next week.

  1444. It turns

  1445. out that this

  1446. guy Boaz

  1447. is not just

  1448. a good

  1449. bloke

  1450. not just

  1451. a wealthy

  1452. guy

  1453. but he's

  1454. their next

  1455. of kin.

  1456. He's their

  1457. closest relative

  1458. or one of

  1459. their closest

  1460. relatives.

  1461. And as

  1462. such under

  1463. the law

  1464. he's got a

  1465. privilege to

  1466. help them

  1467. and he's

  1468. able to

  1469. do that.

  1470. He's got

  1471. the wherewithal

  1472. to do it.

  1473. He's wealthy

  1474. and he's

  1475. willing.

  1476. In fact

  1477. we'll see

  1478. next week

  1479. he's more

  1480. than willing.

  1481. He goes

  1482. out of his

  1483. way and

  1484. most important

  1485. of all

  1486. he is godly.

  1487. And they

  1488. can entrust

  1489. themselves

  1490. to him.

  1491. What a

  1492. friend we

  1493. have in

  1494. Boaz.

  1495. All our

  1496. sins and

  1497. griefs to

  1498. bear.

  1499. What a

  1500. privilege to

  1501. carry.

  1502. Everything to

  1503. Boaz.

  1504. What a

  1505. difference a

  1506. day can

  1507. make in

  1508. someone's

  1509. life.

  1510. I don't

  1511. know what

  1512. you came

  1513. here today

  1514. expecting to

  1515. find.

  1516. you are

  1517. here aren't

  1518. you?

  1519. At least

  1520. in body.

  1521. And I

  1522. don't know

  1523. what you're

  1524. struggling

  1525. with.

  1526. It is

  1527. true that

  1528. most of

  1529. the major

  1530. events of

  1531. life happen

  1532. when you're

  1533. doing something

  1534. else.

  1535. And the

  1536. biggest things

  1537. that happen

  1538. to us in

  1539. life don't

  1540. normally give

  1541. you an

  1542. announcement

  1543. before.

  1544. And I

  1545. don't know

  1546. what Naomi

  1547. and Ruth

  1548. expected that

  1549. morning when

  1550. Ruth said

  1551. goodbye to

  1552. Naomi.

  1553. When she

  1554. went out into

  1555. the fields to

  1556. glean.

  1557. But guess

  1558. what?

  1559. She found

  1560. a redeemer.

  1561. There is a

  1562. redeemer.

  1563. If you forget

  1564. everything that

  1565. I've said this

  1566. morning remember

  1567. that.

  1568. There is a

  1569. redeemer that

  1570. God in his

  1571. kindness has

  1572. given us a

  1573. kinsman redeemer.

  1574. And the

  1575. writer to the

  1576. Hebrews tells

  1577. us about him.

  1578. He tells us

  1579. that he has

  1580. voluntarily and

  1581. deliberately

  1582. related to

  1583. himself.

  1584. That's what's

  1585. going on in

  1586. the incarnation.

  1587. The second

  1588. person of the

  1589. blessed trinity

  1590. who made the

  1591. world.

  1592. The world was

  1593. made through

  1594. him came

  1595. into the

  1596. world and

  1597. the world

  1598. didn't

  1599. recognize him.

  1600. And he

  1601. came to

  1602. his own,

  1603. his very

  1604. own, but

  1605. his own

  1606. didn't

  1607. recognize him.

  1608. The creator

  1609. stepped into

  1610. his creation

  1611. and he took

  1612. to himself a

  1613. human psyche,

  1614. a human body.

  1615. He entered

  1616. into our

  1617. humanity.

  1618. He deliberately

  1619. and voluntarily

  1620. became one of

  1621. us so that he's

  1622. not ashamed to

  1623. call us brothers

  1624. and sisters.

  1625. And that's

  1626. what the

  1627. writer to

  1628. the Hebrews

  1629. says.

  1630. The writer to

  1631. the Hebrews

  1632. says he came

  1633. to pay our

  1634. debts.

  1635. He came to

  1636. pay the debts

  1637. that separate

  1638. you from a

  1639. loving God and

  1640. he came to

  1641. defeat our

  1642. enemy, the

  1643. one who

  1644. holds us in

  1645. our lifetime

  1646. in fear of

  1647. death.

  1648. The one who

  1649. has the power

  1650. to do that.

  1651. And there

  1652. is a

  1653. redeemer who

  1654. is able to

  1655. fix all that

  1656. is broken in

  1657. your life and

  1658. to put it all

  1659. back together

  1660. again.

  1661. To give you

  1662. the future and

  1663. the hope that

  1664. you thought you

  1665. would never

  1666. have in a

  1667. land flowing

  1668. with milk and

  1669. honey.

  1670. There is a

  1671. redeemer,

  1672. Jesus, God's

  1673. own son.

  1674. And you can

  1675. trust yourself to

  1676. him, can't

  1677. you?

  1678. Won't you?

  1679. Won't you?

  1680. Let's pray.
