  1. Turn with me to Ruth chapter 4.

    Ruth 4 chapter mention

  2. Ruth chapter 4, it's on page 224 if you've got a church Bible.

    Ruth 4 chapter mention

  3. And there's a really famous photograph from 1972.

  4. ! It's a Pulitzer Prize winning photograph.

  5. And many believe that that photograph put an end to the Vietnam War.

  6. Some of you will have seen it, most of you will have.

  7. It's of a little girl running down the street naked in pain.

  8. Her eyes are squeezed tight with terror.

  9. It was one of the most disturbing pictures,

  10. one of the most poignant snapshots of the Vietnam War.

  11. 24 years later, that same young lady was standing at the podium

  12. in the Vietnam Veteran Memorial in Washington.

  13. It was Veterans Day.

  14. And as a child, Kim Yook brought home to Americans the horror of war.

  15. But 24 years later, she's a grown woman at that ceremony.

  16. And she brings a very different lesson.

  17. It's the lesson of the Book of Ruth.

  18. The healing power of forgiveness.

  19. As she laid a wreath against the wall.

  20. And Kim told the assembled crowd of war veterans,

  21. these are her words,

  22. As you know, I am the little girl in that photograph.

  23. I'm the little girl who was running down the road,

  24. running to escape from the napalm fire.

  25. I've suffered a lot from both physical and emotional pain.

  26. There were times when I thought I couldn't live.

  27. But God saved my life.

  28. And gave me faith and hope.

  29. How did that happen?

  30. Well, soon after the infamous photo was taken,

  31. Kim was rushed to hospital

  32. by the Associated Press photographer who'd taken the picture.

  33. And years of painful therapy followed.

  34. After the war, she'd enrolled in Saigon University,

  35. hoping to study medicine.

  36. But she was far too valuable,

  37. a propaganda tool for the communist government.

  38. She was put to work in a government office.

  39. And eventually, she was sent on a goodwill visit to Cuba in 1996.

  40. And while she was in Cuba,

  41. she fell in love with a man.

  42. They got married.

  43. He became a Christian.

  44. And she became a Christian.

  45. And eventually, both of them managed to defect.

  46. And this is what she said more recently on national radio.

  47. She told of her plans to go to Bible college

  48. that she and her husband had

  49. so that they could go and spread the good news

  50. amongst the Vietnamese people.

  51. As she shared the message of forgiveness

  52. to thousands of toughened soldiers

  53. on that Veterans Day ceremony,

  54. she publicly forgave the pilot

  55. whose load had scarred her skin

  56. and killed her two younger brothers.

  57. It's reported that at that moment,

  58. many hardened war veterans began to weep.

  59. Now, why do I tell you that story?

  60. What is the moral of that story?

  61. And this is it.

  62. It's that there is no limit

  63. to the reach of God's forgiveness.

  64. There's no limit to the kindness of God.

  65. This book, this 3,000-year-old story

  66. set in the days of the judges,

  67. in days just like ours,

  68. days of overwhelming spiritual apostasy,

  69. moral anarchy.

  70. This little story,

  71. the key word in the story

  72. is that word kindness.

  73. It's God's loving kindness,

  74. God's steadfast love,

  75. his covenant love.

  76. It is the heart of God

  77. that we see in this lovely little story.

  78. And so for many,

  79. for many,

  80. what they would have considered

  81. to be a hopeless situation,

  82. an insignificant, nameless girl

  83. running down a road in Vietnam,

  84. God began to restore the nation.

  85. And on that bleak day

  86. when Kim lost her family

  87. and was herself engulfed in flames,

  88. she would not have been able to predict,

  89. would she?

  90. Not in a million years,

  91. the unlikely outcome of her ordeal.

  92. She would never have guessed

  93. that through a series

  94. of seemingly chance events,

  95. she would somehow

  96. come to know God's love herself.

  97. And she would be able to shelter

  98. under the wings of the God of Israel.

  99. She would never have guessed

  100. that she herself

  101. would become a messenger of God's grace

  102. to share God's love with others,

  103. which he's still doing to this day.

  104. And through her testimony,

  105. many have discovered for themselves

  106. what it is to take refuge in Jesus

  107. as their redeemer.

  108. That's the story of Ruth, really.

  109. If you had asked an Israelite then,

  110. back in the days of the judges,

  111. where is your God?

  112. What has happened to the promise

  113. that he made to Abraham?

  114. That you people would be a blessing

  115. to the whole earth?

  116. What's happened to that?

  117. Where is your God?

  118. What's happening to your covenant promises?

  119. I very much doubt they would have pointed

  120. to a little Moabite girl called Ruth.

  121. But that is where God

  122. was working out his purposes.

  123. Somebody has called the book of Ruth

  124. the love story that changed the world.

  125. And that's no exaggeration.

  126. If you were making a film out of it,

  127. you'd call it Three Weddings and a Funeral.

  128. Chapter 1, there are three funerals.

  129. Elimelech and his two sons,

  130. Marlon and Cilion.

  131. There's three graves in Moab.

  132. But it ends with a wedding.

  133. And Boaz marries Ruth.

  134. And out of this marriage comes King David,

  135. who was the great grandson of Ruth and Boaz.

  136. And from David, of course, comes Jesus.

  137. David's greatest son.

  138. And of course, he is the reason

  139. why you're here this morning.

  140. Who would have thought that a story

  141. 3,000 years old,

  142. a tiny little volume that you can miss,

  143. can't you, as you skip through the Bible,

  144. it's just four or five pages.

  145. That's the reason why you're here.

  146. It's a story about the Lord Jesus.

  147. It's a story of redemption.

  148. Like every story in the Bible,

  149. it points to Jesus as our kinsman and regimen.

  150. So I've got three things to say to you.

  151. And the story is, first of all,

  152. a story of costly redemption.

  153. It's a story of costly redemption.

  154. So, do you remember?

  155. Ruth, at Naomi's instigation,

  156. Naomi, the interfering mother in all,

  157. but not really.

  158. She's a godly lady.

  159. She's got Ruth's best interest at heart.

  160. Ruth, at Naomi's instigation,

  161. has proposed to Boaz

  162. in a cornfield in the middle of the night.

  163. And in asking Boaz to marry her,

  164. according to the laws of Israel,

  165. she's invoking the principle

  166. of a kinsman redeemer.

  167. She's asking him,

  168. not only to be her husband,

  169. but be the one who will redeem

  170. and rescue my family.

  171. Who will give me a future

  172. and a hope in Israel.

  173. And as we've seen,

  174. Boaz is more than willing to do this.

  175. In fact, he's determined to do it properly

  176. or not to do it at all.

  177. So do you notice, in verse 1,

  178. he goes up to the gate, doesn't he?

  179. He goes to the town hall,

  180. the hub of that community.

  181. That's where the town councillors

  182. met to transact their business.

  183. The finance matters.

  184. All sorts of issues

  185. were settled at the town gate.

  186. It's not a matter, Boaz is saying,

  187. to be settled in the middle of a cornfield

  188. in the middle of night.

  189. It should be done publicly

  190. in accordance with God's law

  191. in Deuteronomy and Leviticus.

  192. And the law provided

  193. that a close relative

  194. could marry a widow.

  195. There's no welfare payments,

  196. no social security,

  197. or anything like that.

  198. 3,000 years ago in Israel,

  199. but there was a very rich

  200. and generous provision.

  201. in the law of God

  202. for people who were destitute,

  203. for people who were marginalised,

  204. people who'd lost everything,

  205. the law allowed a close relative

  206. to marry into the family,

  207. to marry the widow,

  208. to produce offspring,

  209. to whom the property rights

  210. would be transferred,

  211. the debts would be taken on.

  212. And so up to this point in the story,

  213. everybody's hoping it's going to be Boaz.

  214. But the path of true love

  215. is seldom smooth.

  216. We find out, didn't we,

  217. in chapter 3 last week,

  218. there's been a complication.

  219. It's complicated.

  220. In fact, there is a closer relative

  221. than Boaz.

  222. There's somebody higher up the queue.

  223. And so verse 1,

  224. can you see it?

  225. Of chapter 4,

  226. now Boaz had gone up to the gate

  227. and sat down there,

  228. and behold,

  229. it just so happened.

  230. We've seen that many times

  231. in the book of Ruth.

  232. Behold, the Redeemer

  233. of whom Boaz had spoken

  234. came by.

  235. Boaz grabs hold of him

  236. and challenges him

  237. before witnesses

  238. to fulfill his duty.

  239. So he says,

  240. verse 3,

  241. he said to the Redeemer,

  242. Naomi,

  243. who's come back

  244. from the country of Moab,

  245. is selling the parcel of land

  246. that belonged

  247. to our relative Elimelech.

  248. So I thought

  249. I would tell you about it.

  250. I'd say,

  251. buy it in the presence

  252. of those sitting here.

  253. There's witnesses

  254. in the presence

  255. of the elders of my people.

  256. If you will redeem it,

  257. redeem it.

  258. But if you will not,

  259. tell me that I may know.

  260. For there's no one

  261. besides you to redeem it

  262. and I come after you.

  263. What's he going to say?

  264. Well, the man says,

  265. I'll redeem it.

  266. I'm in.

  267. But do you notice

  268. who Boaz hasn't mentioned yet?

  269. He's not mentioned Ruth yet,

  270. has he?

  271. He's just spoken

  272. in terms of

  273. the parcel of land

  274. of prophets.

  275. And obviously,

  276. this nameless Redeemer,

  277. he's a guy

  278. with an eye for a bargain.

  279. This could be

  280. a nice little earner.

  281. Naomi is an old lady.

  282. She's not going to have

  283. any children.

  284. If I marry Naomi,

  285. well,

  286. the land will become

  287. mine automatically.

  288. When Naomi dies,

  289. she's not going to have a son.

  290. She's not going to have

  291. somebody who will be able

  292. to reclaim their inheritance.

  293. And the land would become

  294. automatically mine.

  295. It's a nice little earner.

  296. It sounds like a good investment,

  297. a good option.

  298. But then Boaz plays

  299. his trump card.

  300. Look what he says.

  301. He says,

  302. did I mention Ruth?

  303. Did I mention Ruth,

  304. the Moabitess?

  305. And I think the writer

  306. of the story

  307. is emphasizing something there.

  308. Did I mention Ruth,

  309. the foreigner?

  310. Ruth,

  311. the Moabitess,

  312. who's come to Israel.

  313. She comes as part

  314. of the deal.

  315. She comes as part

  316. of the property.

  317. So,

  318. verse 5.

  319. And the day you buy

  320. the field from the hand

  321. of Naomi,

  322. you also acquire

  323. Ruth,

  324. the Moabite,

  325. the widow of the dead,

  326. in order to perpetuate

  327. the name of the dead

  328. in his inheritance.

  329. Now it's not looking

  330. such a good deal.

  331. Ruth,

  332. by all accounts,

  333. is a very attractive

  334. young woman.

  335. She's likely to have

  336. children of her own.

  337. And he doesn't mind

  338. buying the land.

  339. But there's no

  340. commercial advantage

  341. to marrying Ruth.

  342. And so he backs out.

  343. He says the deal is off.

  344. And he takes off his sandal.

  345. It's a bit strange to us.

  346. He hands it to Boaz.

  347. But that is the legal way

  348. of transferring property

  349. in Israel.

  350. It's the equivalent

  351. of signing a contract,

  352. of shaking on the deal.

  353. He's relinquishing

  354. his rights to the land.

  355. And then we're told,

  356. verse 9.

  357. Then Boaz said to the elders

  358. and all the people,

  359. you are witnesses this day

  360. that I've bought

  361. from the hand of Naomi

  362. all that belonged to Emelach,

  363. all that belonged to

  364. Kilian and Malon,

  365. and Ruth the Moabite,

  366. the widow of Malon.

  367. I bought to be my wife.

  368. There's such a contrast,

  369. isn't there,

  370. between the two redeemers.

  371. Boaz was not

  372. the closest relative.

  373. He had no obligation

  374. to buy the land.

  375. He had no obligation

  376. to marry Ruth.

  377. He didn't have to do that.

  378. There was another relative

  379. who was more closely connected

  380. with the family.

  381. He could have walked away.

  382. But he freely chose

  383. to do this.

  384. He freely chose

  385. to bear the cost,

  386. to take on the responsibility.

  387. And of course,

  388. that's the real difference,

  389. isn't it,

  390. between a real redeemer

  391. and a false redeemer.

  392. So, remember the Lord Jesus

  393. in the Gospels,

  394. he talked about himself

  395. as the good shepherd.

  396. The good shepherd,

  397. the great shepherd

  398. who comes

  399. and lays down his life

  400. for the sheep.

  401. And he contrasts that

  402. in the Gospels

  403. with the hirelings

  404. who were only in it

  405. for what they could get out of it.

  406. They don't care about the sheep.

  407. They're only in it

  408. for the money.

  409. And that's the contrast

  410. between Boaz

  411. and this other man.

  412. This other man

  413. is only in it

  414. for what he can squeeze out

  415. for himself.

  416. He's not concerned

  417. with the plight

  418. of these two

  419. widowed women.

  420. He's not concerned

  421. with their future

  422. in Israel.

  423. It didn't enter

  424. into his thinking at all,

  425. but not so with Boaz.

  426. He acts out of

  427. unselfish,

  428. sacrificial love.

  429. It's not usually

  430. what we mean

  431. by love.

  432. But the key word here

  433. is the word hesed.

  434. That's covenant love.

  435. It's hard

  436. to put it

  437. into English.

  438. Somebody has called it

  439. love with Velcro,

  440. which is quite a good way

  441. of putting it.

  442. Covenant love

  443. is not lust.

  444. It's not infatuation.

  445. It's not hormones

  446. raging

  447. through the body

  448. in testosterone.

  449. Alec Mateer

  450. puts it like this.

  451. He says,

  452. covenant love,

  453. it is the wonderful love

  454. that combines

  455. the warmth

  456. of God's fellowship

  457. with the security

  458. of God's faithfulness.

  459. And that's a lovely

  460. unpacking of that word.

  461. It's like the wonderful love

  462. that combines

  463. the warmth

  464. of God's fellowship

  465. fellowship

  466. with the secret

  467. of God's faithfulness,

  468. the security

  469. of God's faithfulness.

  470. And that's what Ruth

  471. has come to expect

  472. by sheltering

  473. under the wings

  474. of God.

  475. And that's what Boaz

  476. knew

  477. and experienced

  478. in his life.

  479. He knew what it was

  480. to trust

  481. in the God of Israel.

  482. And you see

  483. that covenant love

  484. and covenant faithfulness

  485. supremely in Jesus.

  486. And Boaz

  487. is a prototype

  488. of Jesus.

  489. You know what a prototype is?

  490. It's not the real thing.

  491. But it points

  492. to the real thing.

  493. It points

  494. to what the real thing

  495. is

  496. and how it will function.

  497. And Boaz

  498. is not Jesus.

  499. He points

  500. to Jesus.

  501. And so Spurgeon

  502. calls Jesus

  503. our glorious Boaz.

  504. Do you remember

  505. what Jesus said

  506. in the gospel?

  507. The Son of Man

  508. has come into the world.

  509. This broken,

  510. fallen, damaged world.

  511. The Son of Man

  512. has come into this world

  513. not to be served

  514. but to serve.

  515. That's the difference

  516. between Jesus

  517. and all these

  518. other redeemers.

  519. Difference between Jesus

  520. and all these

  521. other gods out there.

  522. The Son of Man

  523. came not to be served

  524. but to serve

  525. and to give his life

  526. as a ransom

  527. for many.

  528. To pay the price.

  529. The ultimate price

  530. that would redeem us

  531. and sell us free

  532. from our sin

  533. and give us a future.

  534. Our glorious Boaz

  535. the Son of Man

  536. he looked down

  537. the corridors

  538. of eternity

  539. and he saw you

  540. and me in our plight.

  541. Just like Boaz

  542. saw Ruth

  543. in her plight

  544. and his heart

  545. was moved for us

  546. willingly and freely.

  547. And it wasn't robbery

  548. for him to claim

  549. equality with God.

  550. He could have stayed

  551. in the glory

  552. couldn't he

  553. but he willingly

  554. and he freely

  555. took the form

  556. of a servant

  557. and became obedient

  558. unto death

  559. even death on a cross.

  560. He paid the ultimate price.

  561. From heaven

  562. he came

  563. and sought her

  564. to be his holy bride.

  565. with his own blood

  566. he bought her

  567. and for her sake

  568. he died.

  569. Because as we

  570. see at the Lord's table

  571. redemption is costly.

  572. There's a price

  573. to pay

  574. and when the moment

  575. comes

  576. and the price

  577. for our rescue

  578. has to be paid

  579. we're told Jesus

  580. sell his face

  581. like a flint

  582. to Jerusalem.

  583. He didn't back out.

  584. He didn't hesitate.

  585. He didn't linger.

  586. He didn't withhold

  587. anything

  588. he gave of himself

  589. freely and willingly.

  590. He went to the cross.

  591. How willing

  592. was Jesus to die

  593. that we fellow sinners

  594. might live?

  595. The life

  596. they could not take away.

  597. How willing

  598. was Jesus to give?

  599. And freely

  600. and willingly

  601. he dies

  602. on the cross

  603. and with his last breath

  604. he cries out

  605. doesn't he?

  606. Tatalestai

  607. it is finished.

  608. Not I am finished.

  609. It's a business term

  610. at the cross.

  611. He's not saying

  612. I am finished.

  613. He cried out

  614. with a loud voice

  615. it is paid for.

  616. Campbell Morgan

  617. he was a minister

  618. in London

  619. in the kind of

  620. early part

  621. of the 20th century

  622. and he was preaching

  623. in South Wales

  624. in a coal mining village.

  625. And he spoke

  626. of the salvation

  627. that is offered

  628. to us

  629. in the Lord Jesus Christ.

  630. He spoke to this man

  631. and he said

  632. there is nothing

  633. that you have to do.

  634. There is nothing

  635. you can do

  636. but receive it.

  637. That's all you've got to do.

  638. I think it's one

  639. of the many things

  640. that keeps people

  641. from becoming a Christian.

  642. The person said

  643. but surely

  644. that's just too easy

  645. isn't it?

  646. It's too good

  647. to be true.

  648. Surely

  649. I've got to do something.

  650. Surely

  651. I've got to make

  652. some contribution.

  653. Surely

  654. I'll have to pay something.

  655. Campbell Morgan

  656. said to him

  657. tell me

  658. how did you go down

  659. into the mine

  660. underground this morning?

  661. Man said

  662. I went down

  663. on the lift.

  664. He said

  665. well

  666. that must have

  667. cost you something

  668. wasn't it?

  669. Man said

  670. well no

  671. it didn't cost me

  672. a thing.

  673. Well isn't that

  674. too easy?

  675. Didn't you have

  676. to pay

  677. to go down

  678. in the lift?

  679. Wasn't there

  680. a cost to pay?

  681. The man said

  682. well no

  683. it didn't cost me

  684. a thing.

  685. The man said

  686. it cost the company

  687. to have that lift

  688. installed.

  689. It cost the company

  690. an awful lot

  691. to have that lift

  692. installed

  693. but it didn't

  694. cost me a thing.

  695. It's precisely.

  696. And salvation

  697. is free.

  698. It is not cheap.

  699. But it is free.

  700. It cost me

  701. nothing.

  702. It cost him

  703. everything.

  704. It cost God

  705. his own

  706. beloved son.

  707. We have

  708. redemption

  709. through his

  710. blood.

  711. And so that's

  712. the first thing.

  713. It's a story

  714. of costly

  715. redemption

  716. but secondly

  717. it's a story

  718. of surprising

  719. grace.

  720. Surprising

  721. grace.

  722. Look at

  723. verses

  724. 11 and 12.

  725. There's a prayer

  726. in there.

  727. In fact I'm not

  728. really sure

  729. whether it's a

  730. prayer or testimony

  731. meeting

  732. in verses

  733. 11 and 12.

  734. But after the

  735. ceremony

  736. the witnesses

  737. who've witnessed

  738. the transaction

  739. they pray

  740. in verses

  741. 11 and 12.

  742. And you might

  743. have noticed

  744. that Ruth

  745. actually is

  746. laced with

  747. all these

  748. little prayers

  749. all the way

  750. through it.

  751. And here

  752. are the

  753. witnesses

  754. the town

  755. counsellors

  756. and they're

  757. praying

  758. and they pray

  759. for Ruth

  760. you notice

  761. in verses

  762. 11 and 12.

  763. And they pray

  764. don't they

  765. that she might

  766. become like

  767. Rachel and Leah

  768. the founding

  769. mothers of

  770. Israel

  771. who produced

  772. enormous amounts

  773. of children.

  774. And then

  775. Ruth the Moabitess

  776. this pagan

  777. girl

  778. who comes

  779. from a place

  780. where they

  781. used to

  782. sacrifice

  783. their children

  784. to Chemosh

  785. this girl

  786. who used

  787. to worship

  788. other gods

  789. and now

  790. these elders

  791. are praying

  792. for Ruth

  793. the Moabitess

  794. that she

  795. would become

  796. like Rachel

  797. and Leah

  798. the founding

  799. mothers of

  800. Israel.

  801. And they

  802. pray for

  803. Boaz

  804. for his

  805. name

  806. to be

  807. honoured

  808. where

  809. in

  810. Bethlehem

  811. Ephrathah.

  812. And they

  813. pray for

  814. this little

  815. family

  816. may your

  817. family be

  818. like that

  819. of Perez

  820. who

  821. Terah

  822. brought

  823. to Judah.

  824. And Perez

  825. was the

  826. result of

  827. the same

  828. kind of

  829. marriage

  830. that Ruth

  831. and Boaz

  832. would have

  833. a Leverite

  834. marriage

  835. marrying

  836. the brothers

  837. widow.

  838. And he

  839. was one

  840. of Boaz

  841. ancestors.

  842. It's

  843. easy for

  844. us to

  845. forget

  846. with all

  847. these

  848. wonderful

  849. sentiments

  850. being

  851. expressed

  852. in this

  853. little

  854. prayer

  855. meeting

  856. that

  857. this

  858. is

  859. Ruth

  860. the

  861. Moabitess

  862. a

  863. childless

  864. widow

  865. from a

  866. despised

  867. foreign

  868. tribe

  869. and now

  870. her name

  871. is up

  872. there in

  873. lights

  874. with Rachel

  875. and Leah.

  876. But not

  877. only that

  878. look at

  879. verse 15

  880. there's

  881. something

  882. shocking

  883. about that.

  884. In chapter

  885. one

  886. when they

  887. turned up

  888. the people

  889. were whispering

  890. behind their

  891. hands about

  892. Ruth and

  893. Naomi.

  894. But now

  895. look what

  896. they say

  897. in verse

  898. 15.

  899. He shall

  900. be to

  901. you a

  902. restorer

  903. of life

  904. and nourisher

  905. of your

  906. old age

  907. for your

  908. daughters-in-law

  909. who loves

  910. you

  911. who is

  912. more to

  913. you

  914. who is

  915. more

  916. valuable

  917. than

  918. seven

  919. sons.

  920. That is

  921. a really

  922. radical

  923. thing

  924. to say

  925. in the

  926. patriarchal

  927. culture

  928. of

  929. Ruth.

  930. When

  931. having

  932. lots

  933. of

  934. sons

  935. was

  936. seen

  937. to be

  938. a

  939. great

  940. blessing

  941. from

  942. the

  943. Lord

  944. and

  945. seven

  946. is

  947. the

  948. perfect

  949. number.

  950. And so

  951. do you

  952. see what

  953. they're

  954. saying

  955. to

  956. Naomi?

  957. Ruth

  958. is

  959. better

  960. to

  961. you

  962. than

  963. an

  964. infinite

  965. number

  966. of

  967. men.

  968. That's

  969. a radical

  970. thing

  971. to say

  972. 3,000

  973. years

  974. ago.

  975. In

  976. Israel.

  977. Isn't

  978. that

  979. surprising?

  980. You

  981. didn't

  982. see

  983. that

  984. one

  985. coming.

  986. In

  987. a

  988. day

  989. when

  990. women

  991. were

  992. nobodies,

  993. do you

  994. see what

  995. God does

  996. here?

  997. God

  998. recruits

  999. the

  1000. women.

  1001. And

  1002. he

  1003. recruits

  1004. a

  1005. widow

  1006. and

  1007. a

  1008. foreigner

  1009. from

  1010. a

  1011. despised

  1012. race.

  1013. And

  1014. he

  1015. recruits

  1016. her

  1017. for

  1018. a

  1019. leading

  1020. role

  1021. in

  1022. the

  1023. unfolding

  1024. of

  1025. his

  1026. eternal

  1027. purposes.

  1028. She

  1029. is,

  1030. as it

  1031. were,

  1032. spliced

  1033. into

  1034. the

  1035. line

  1036. of

  1037. David,

  1038. the

  1039. great

  1040. king,

  1041. and

  1042. ultimately

  1043. into

  1044. the

  1045. line

  1046. of

  1047. Jesus.

  1048. Because

  1049. when you

  1050. come to

  1051. the

  1052. New

  1053. Testament,

  1054. Ruth

  1055. turns

  1056. up on

  1057. the

  1058. first

  1059. page.

  1060. The

  1061. racial

  1062. outsider,

  1063. the

  1064. poor

  1065. widow,

  1066. the

  1067. outcast,

  1068. she's

  1069. identified

  1070. with the

  1071. name that

  1072. is above

  1073. every

  1074. name.

  1075. And

  1076. isn't

  1077. that

  1078. God's

  1079. grace?

  1080. It's

  1081. outrageous,

  1082. it's

  1083. surprising,

  1084. it's no

  1085. wonder we

  1086. sing

  1087. amazing

  1088. grace.

  1089. Ruth

  1090. the

  1091. Moabitess

  1092. becomes

  1093. one of

  1094. the

  1095. mothers

  1096. of

  1097. Jesus.

  1098. And so

  1099. family

  1100. trees in

  1101. Jesus'

  1102. day

  1103. normally

  1104. only

  1105. included

  1106. the

  1107. names

  1108. of

  1109. men,

  1110. but

  1111. Jesus'

  1112. genealogy

  1113. has

  1114. got

  1115. four

  1116. women

  1117. in it.

  1118. Bathsheba,

  1119. Tamar,

  1120. Rahab,

  1121. and Ruth.

  1122. Ruth

  1123. the

  1124. Moabitess,

  1125. four shady

  1126. ladies,

  1127. as one

  1128. commented

  1129. it

  1130. calls

  1131. them.

  1132. It's

  1133. probably

  1134. a bit

  1135. unfair.

  1136. And

  1137. yet they've

  1138. got a

  1139. history.

  1140. And

  1141. grace

  1142. has

  1143. put

  1144. them

  1145. in

  1146. the

  1147. Saviour's

  1148. family.

  1149. And

  1150. grace

  1151. can do

  1152. that

  1153. for you

  1154. today,

  1155. whatever

  1156. your

  1157. background.

  1158. Whatever

  1159. skeletons

  1160. are

  1161. rattling

  1162. around

  1163. in your

  1164. cupboard,

  1165. God's

  1166. kindness

  1167. is so

  1168. wonderful

  1169. that it

  1170. can put

  1171. you in

  1172. the

  1173. Saviour's

  1174. family.

  1175. So

  1176. listen to

  1177. what Paul

  1178. says,

  1179. the

  1180. mercy

  1181. of God

  1182. extends

  1183. beyond the

  1184. boundaries

  1185. of race

  1186. or class

  1187. or gender

  1188. or culture

  1189. or ethnicity.

  1190. It

  1191. isn't

  1192. restricted

  1193. to the

  1194. rich

  1195. and

  1196. powerful.

  1197. No,

  1198. it's a

  1199. kingdom

  1200. of

  1201. grace

  1202. is what

  1203. Paul

  1204. says in

  1205. 1 Corinthians.

  1206. Think of

  1207. what you

  1208. were,

  1209. he says

  1210. to the

  1211. church.

  1212. He says,

  1213. when you

  1214. were called,

  1215. not many

  1216. of you

  1217. were wise

  1218. according to

  1219. the worldly

  1220. standards.

  1221. There's not

  1222. many PhDs

  1223. in the

  1224. Corinthian

  1225. church,

  1226. not many

  1227. influential

  1228. politicians,

  1229. not many

  1230. of noble

  1231. birth,

  1232. but God

  1233. chose the

  1234. foolish

  1235. things of

  1236. the world

  1237. to shame

  1238. the wise.

  1239. God chose

  1240. the weak

  1241. things to

  1242. shame

  1243. the strong.

  1244. God chose

  1245. the lowly

  1246. things of

  1247. the world

  1248. and the

  1249. despised

  1250. things and

  1251. the things

  1252. that are

  1253. not to

  1254. nullify the

  1255. things that

  1256. are,

  1257. so that

  1258. no one

  1259. may boast

  1260. before him.

  1261. God

  1262. is God's

  1263. grace,

  1264. that is

  1265. what he

  1266. does.

  1267. Sometimes

  1268. I think

  1269. we are

  1270. tempted to

  1271. think that

  1272. God could

  1273. never really

  1274. use me.

  1275. God

  1276. couldn't

  1277. use us

  1278. because we

  1279. don't meet

  1280. the kind

  1281. of index

  1282. of worldly

  1283. success.

  1284. And we

  1285. look around

  1286. this room

  1287. and we

  1288. just think,

  1289. well,

  1290. I'm just

  1291. a nobody.

  1292. We're just

  1293. nothings.

  1294. sometimes we

  1295. think God

  1296. could never

  1297. use a

  1298. person like

  1299. me because

  1300. we don't

  1301. match up

  1302. to our

  1303. own

  1304. expectations,

  1305. let alone

  1306. the expectations

  1307. of others.

  1308. And we

  1309. feel God

  1310. couldn't

  1311. possibly

  1312. use a

  1313. person

  1314. like

  1315. me.

  1316. But we

  1317. mustn't

  1318. forget God's

  1319. surprising

  1320. grace.

  1321. Jacob was

  1322. a cheater.

  1323. Peter had

  1324. a temper.

  1325. David had

  1326. an affair.

  1327. Noah got

  1328. drunk.

  1329. Jonah ran

  1330. from God.

  1331. Paul was

  1332. a murderer.

  1333. Gideon was

  1334. insecure.

  1335. Miriam was

  1336. a gossip.

  1337. Martha was

  1338. a worrier.

  1339. Thomas was

  1340. a doubter.

  1341. Sarah was

  1342. impatient.

  1343. Elijah was

  1344. depressed.

  1345. Moses

  1346. stuttered.

  1347. Zacchaeus

  1348. was short.

  1349. Abraham was

  1350. old.

  1351. And Lazarus

  1352. was dead.

  1353. That's how

  1354. God works.

  1355. God doesn't

  1356. call the

  1357. qualified.

  1358. He qualifies

  1359. the called.

  1360. God's

  1361. God's

  1362. God.

  1363. And that's

  1364. what he

  1365. does.

  1366. It's all of

  1367. grace so that

  1368. no one would

  1369. boast.

  1370. And so

  1371. whoever you

  1372. are this

  1373. morning,

  1374. and wherever

  1375. you're from,

  1376. and whatever

  1377. your background,

  1378. and whatever

  1379. your baggage,

  1380. and whatever

  1381. your story,

  1382. your life

  1383. becomes

  1384. significant

  1385. as it is

  1386. taken up

  1387. into the

  1388. greater story

  1389. of the

  1390. Lord Jesus

  1391. himself.

  1392. And that's

  1393. the story of

  1394. Ruth.

  1395. It's a

  1396. story of

  1397. costly

  1398. redemption.

  1399. It's a

  1400. story of

  1401. surprising

  1402. grace.

  1403. And then

  1404. lastly,

  1405. it's a

  1406. story of

  1407. joyful

  1408. restoration.

  1409. Some

  1410. people read

  1411. the end of

  1412. Ruth and

  1413. they think

  1414. it's a

  1415. little bit

  1416. Disney-esque.

  1417. The girl

  1418. gets the

  1419. guy,

  1420. they have

  1421. a baby,

  1422. they all

  1423. live happily

  1424. ever after.

  1425. That only

  1426. ever happens

  1427. in fairy

  1428. tales,

  1429. doesn't it?

  1430. So if you

  1431. write a

  1432. modern play

  1433. and you

  1434. give it a

  1435. happy ending,

  1436. the critics

  1437. laugh at

  1438. you.

  1439. They say

  1440. it's

  1441. superficial and

  1442. unrealistic.

  1443. Real life

  1444. isn't like

  1445. that.

  1446. It's only

  1447. like that in

  1448. fairy tales that

  1449. people live

  1450. happily ever

  1451. after, or

  1452. is it?

  1453. Why is it

  1454. that fairy

  1455. tales end

  1456. that way?

  1457. Why do you

  1458. think fairy

  1459. tales reflect

  1460. that?

  1461. What do you

  1462. think fairy

  1463. tales are

  1464. trying to

  1465. tell us?

  1466. There is an

  1467. echo of

  1468. something there,

  1469. isn't there?

  1470. There is an

  1471. echo of what

  1472. this book is

  1473. telling us,

  1474. of what the

  1475. Bible is

  1476. telling us,

  1477. that in the

  1478. end,

  1479. that in the

  1480. end,

  1481. God's people

  1482. can look

  1483. forward to

  1484. the restoration

  1485. of all

  1486. things in

  1487. Jesus Christ.

  1488. And that

  1489. is how the

  1490. story ends.

  1491. And it

  1492. comes back

  1493. full circle to

  1494. show how God

  1495. restores.

  1496. The years that

  1497. the locusts have

  1498. eaten,

  1499. God can

  1500. restore.

  1501. And when God

  1502. renews his

  1503. people, when they

  1504. put their trust in

  1505. him, let me just

  1506. point that out

  1507. for you, he

  1508. restores Ruth

  1509. and Naomi from

  1510. emptiness to

  1511. fullness.

  1512. Do you remember

  1513. chapter 1?

  1514. Ruth and Naomi,

  1515. they came back to

  1516. Bethlehem and

  1517. Naomi says,

  1518. don't call me

  1519. Naomi, I

  1520. went away full,

  1521. but the Lord has

  1522. brought me back

  1523. empty, call me

  1524. bitter.

  1525. But now chapter

  1526. 14, can you see

  1527. what she says?

  1528. The women say to

  1529. Naomi, blessed be

  1530. the Lord who has

  1531. not left you this

  1532. day without a

  1533. redeemer, and may

  1534. his name be

  1535. renowned for

  1536. by all in

  1537. Israel.

  1538. He shall be to

  1539. you a restorer

  1540. of life, a

  1541. nourisher of

  1542. your old age,

  1543. for your

  1544. daughter-in-law

  1545. who loves you,

  1546. who's more to

  1547. you than seven

  1548. sons has given

  1549. birth to him.

  1550. She's renewed,

  1551. there's a sparkle

  1552. in her eyes

  1553. again, she's

  1554. restored.

  1555. She's returned

  1556. to Bethlehem

  1557. empty, but now

  1558. she's come full

  1559. in chapter 4.

  1560. God has

  1561. answered her

  1562. prayers.

  1563. The woman who

  1564. despaired of

  1565. ever having

  1566. grandchildren has

  1567. got a little

  1568. baby on her

  1569. lap.

  1570. He's filling

  1571. Naomi's

  1572. emptiness, and

  1573. you can see the

  1574. sparkle in her

  1575. eyes.

  1576. As she gazes

  1577. down at this

  1578. little bundle on

  1579. her knee, she's

  1580. no longer bitter

  1581. anymore, the old

  1582. Naomi is back

  1583. again.

  1584. It's embarrassing

  1585. at the end of

  1586. chapter 1 when

  1587. they go back

  1588. from Moab.

  1589. They can't even

  1590. recognize it.

  1591. They say, is

  1592. this really

  1593. Naomi?

  1594. Ten years have

  1595. taken their

  1596. toll.

  1597. But now the

  1598. years that the

  1599. locusts have

  1600. eaten have been

  1601. restored from

  1602. emptiness to

  1603. fullness, from

  1604. prayer to

  1605. praise, because

  1606. what you have

  1607. here in verse

  1608. 13 is answered

  1609. prayer, isn't

  1610. it?

  1611. So Boaz took

  1612. Ruth and she

  1613. became his

  1614. wife and he

  1615. went into her

  1616. and the Lord

  1617. gave her

  1618. conception.

  1619. And she

  1620. bore a

  1621. child.

  1622. I think in

  1623. verse 13 there

  1624. is a clue that

  1625. Ruth had

  1626. struggled to

  1627. conceive.

  1628. I think that's

  1629. the most obvious

  1630. reading of

  1631. verse 13.

  1632. For ten years

  1633. she'd known the

  1634. pain of not

  1635. being able to

  1636. conceive with

  1637. Malon.

  1638. And so Naomi

  1639. in chapter 1

  1640. verse 8 urges

  1641. her daughter's

  1642. in-law to go

  1643. back to Moab.

  1644. That's part of

  1645. her prayer.

  1646. And it's a

  1647. mixture of

  1648. good and

  1649. bad, that

  1650. desire.

  1651. It's mixed, but

  1652. she prays and

  1653. she urges them

  1654. to go back to

  1655. Moab, which is

  1656. not a good

  1657. thing, but she

  1658. wants them to

  1659. find rest and

  1660. security in her

  1661. husband and in

  1662. her family and

  1663. she prays for

  1664. them and God

  1665. has answered

  1666. that prayer now.

  1667. There's a

  1668. high priest at

  1669. God's right

  1670. hand.

  1671. We've got a

  1672. friend in high

  1673. places.

  1674. What a friend we

  1675. have in Jesus.

  1676. All our sins and

  1677. griefs to pay.

  1678. What a privilege

  1679. to carry everything

  1680. to him in

  1681. prayer.

  1682. He cleans up

  1683. our prayers, if

  1684. I can put it

  1685. like that.

  1686. He can make

  1687. sense of our

  1688. confusion, like

  1689. Naomi's confusion

  1690. in chapter 1.

  1691. He can improve

  1692. what we bring to

  1693. God in prayer.

  1694. He's given us

  1695. the spirit of

  1696. adoption who

  1697. groans with us

  1698. in our pain and

  1699. our suffering, who

  1700. makes sense of

  1701. our intercession.

  1702. And that's what's

  1703. happening here.

  1704. He takes our

  1705. poor and

  1706. misguided prayers

  1707. and he improves

  1708. them and he

  1709. answers them in

  1710. ways we never

  1711. thought possible.

  1712. And that's what

  1713. he does for

  1714. Ruth.

  1715. The Lord

  1716. enabled her to

  1717. conceive.

  1718. Verse 13, the

  1719. Lord gave her

  1720. conception and she

  1721. bore a son.

  1722. And so the line

  1723. of Elimelech,

  1724. which everybody

  1725. thought had dried

  1726. up and died

  1727. out, is now

  1728. restored.

  1729. And Ruth and

  1730. Boaz are not so

  1731. much starting a

  1732. family as they're

  1733. rescuing a family.

  1734. It's a story of

  1735. redemption and

  1736. restoration from

  1737. full, from

  1738. empty to full,

  1739. from prayer to

  1740. praise.

  1741. And then

  1742. lastly, from

  1743. chaos to

  1744. Christ.

  1745. Because as I've

  1746. kept reminding you,

  1747. this happened in the

  1748. days of the

  1749. judges.

  1750. A day when

  1751. Israel had no

  1752. king and

  1753. everyone did

  1754. what was right

  1755. in their own

  1756. eyes.

  1757. And it was an

  1758. individualistic,

  1759. hedonistic

  1760. society.

  1761. It was a

  1762. society that

  1763. had made peace

  1764. with sexual

  1765. brutality and

  1766. criminal violence.

  1767. Where might was

  1768. right, where the

  1769. law of the

  1770. jungle prevailed.

  1771. That is how it

  1772. was in the days

  1773. of the judges.

  1774. If you don't

  1775. believe me, just

  1776. read it.

  1777. It's an X-rated

  1778. book.

  1779. And that's how it

  1780. was in the days

  1781. of judges, how it

  1782. is in our society

  1783. today.

  1784. Where everyone

  1785. does what is

  1786. right in their

  1787. own eyes, and

  1788. we will have no

  1789. king in Israel.

  1790. We will not have

  1791. this king to rule

  1792. over us.

  1793. We will not

  1794. have God telling

  1795. us how to run

  1796. our lives.

  1797. And God says,

  1798. you shall not.

  1799. And we say, I

  1800. don't care, God,

  1801. what you're saying,

  1802. I'm going to do

  1803. it anyway.

  1804. That's what sin

  1805. is.

  1806. It is rebellion

  1807. against the God

  1808. who created us.

  1809. And he gave us

  1810. such a wonderful

  1811. environment to

  1812. flourish in.

  1813. And he set the

  1814. parameters for

  1815. human flourishing,

  1816. and we just take

  1817. our puny little

  1818. fist and we shake

  1819. it in his face.

  1820. Elimelech,

  1821. what does that

  1822. mean?

  1823. It means my

  1824. God is king.

  1825. What did Elimelech

  1826. do?

  1827. He wandered

  1828. into Moab.

  1829. He rejected

  1830. God as the

  1831. rightful ruler

  1832. of his life.

  1833. And isn't that

  1834. what you have

  1835. done?

  1836. What?

  1837. Haven't you done

  1838. that?

  1839. Isn't that what

  1840. the world has

  1841. done?

  1842. Because the world

  1843. is made up of

  1844. people like you

  1845. and I?

  1846. And we've

  1847. brought upon

  1848. ourselves to

  1849. the brink of

  1850. eternal ruin.

  1851. And we can no

  1852. more rescue

  1853. ourselves this

  1854. morning than

  1855. Naomi could.

  1856. And we need

  1857. help from

  1858. outside.

  1859. Outside of the

  1860. human race.

  1861. We need a

  1862. redeemer who

  1863. will come and

  1864. restore us and

  1865. rescue us and

  1866. save us.

  1867. that's precisely

  1868. what these

  1869. verses promise

  1870. us.

  1871. Because it's

  1872. almost as if

  1873. isn't it in

  1874. verse 18

  1875. somebody has

  1876. pressed fast

  1877. forward on

  1878. the DVD.

  1879. And suddenly

  1880. we're nine

  1881. months on and

  1882. Naomi is

  1883. cradling a

  1884. grandchild and

  1885. before you know

  1886. it somebody's

  1887. pressed the

  1888. fast forward

  1889. button again

  1890. and you're

  1891. three generations

  1892. down the track

  1893. and there's a

  1894. king in

  1895. Israel,

  1896. King David.

  1897. Israel's

  1898. greatest king.

  1899. And if you

  1900. keep your finger

  1901. on the fast

  1902. forward button

  1903. do you know

  1904. where you find

  1905. yourself?

  1906. in the fields

  1907. of this little

  1908. town of

  1909. Bethlehem,

  1910. Ephrathah.

  1911. And you hear

  1912. the sound of

  1913. angels saying

  1914. today is

  1915. born unto

  1916. you this day

  1917. in the city

  1918. of David a

  1919. saviour who

  1920. is Christ the

  1921. Lord.

  1922. And that's

  1923. where this story

  1924. is pointing

  1925. us from

  1926. emptiness to

  1927. fullness,

  1928. from prayer

  1929. to praise,

  1930. from chaos

  1931. to Christ.

  1932. Christ.

  1933. And we are

  1934. living in a

  1935. society and

  1936. in a time

  1937. that is

  1938. struggling to

  1939. find a new

  1940. morality that

  1941. will allow

  1942. almost anything

  1943. to happen.

  1944. And this

  1945. story points

  1946. you away from

  1947. the chaos of

  1948. our world to

  1949. Christ.

  1950. And ultimately

  1951. of course to the

  1952. restoration of all

  1953. things when Christ

  1954. returns.

  1955. and the

  1956. universe will be

  1957. restored to its

  1958. original settings.

  1959. And then

  1960. indeed we will

  1961. all live

  1962. happily ever

  1963. after in the

  1964. new heavens

  1965. and the new

  1966. earth.

  1967. Thank you.
