  1. Luke 10.

  2. So, who doesn't want to be a good listener?

  3. ! Do you want to be a good listener?

  4. Apart from a few narcissistic individuals,

  5. it seems to me that everyone appreciates the value of good listening.

  6. !

  7. It reflects that.

  8. So, there's articles like the five fundamentals of effective listening,

  9. or seven keys to effective listening.

  10. And the articles cover something like this.

  11. Keeping an open mind.

  12. Responding to non-verbal cues.

  13. Maintaining eye contact.

  14. Asking good questions.

  15. And you read articles like that,

  16. it'll reinforce this key question that people are trying to answer

  17. when it comes to listening.

  18. What is a good listener?

  19. And, of course, that interests us as people of the kingdom of God.

  20. And the Bible has got things to say in answer to that.

  21. But I wonder if what sets the Bible apart in this topic

  22. is that it's less interested in how you listen,

  23. but it's more interested in who you listen to.

  24. And that is, when it comes to the kingdom and the need to listen,

  25. that's our key question.

  26. Who do you listen to?

  27. And particularly, are you listening to the king of the kingdom?

  28. Are you listening to Jesus?

  29. That's our question for this evening.

  30. And as we reflect on these short few verses from the end of Luke 10,

  31. they capture just one little moment in the life of Mary, Martha, and Jesus.

  32. And I want to look at that tonight just by looking at each character in turn.

  33. The sister who does not speak,

  34. and the sister who does speak,

  35. and then Jesus himself,

  36. and what we're left to ponder when he speaks.

  37. So, a moment in the life of Mary and Martha and Jesus.

  38. Let's see, firstly, the sister who does not speak.

  39. And I trust you noticed that about her as I read it.

  40. And no word from Mary is recorded in these five little verses.

  41. Martha speaks,

  42. Jesus speaks,

  43. but Mary is noticeably silent.

  44. And her silence underscores what she's known for,

  45. not for talking,

  46. but for listening.

  47. And when Jesus arrives,

  48. she takes, doesn't he,

  49. up the position, verse 39,

  50. at Jesus' feet.

  51. That is the position of learning for disciples in those days.

  52. It's a position of humble listening.

  53. And by taking her place at Jesus' feet,

  54. she is recognizing Jesus' importance.

  55. And she is, in this moment,

  56. embodying a principle of discipleship

  57. that the Gospel of Luke has already stressed.

  58. I'd not really seen that until I studied this.

  59. So come with me on a little tour of the Gospel of Luke.

  60. Look at chapter 5 and verse 15.

  61. Luke chapter 5 and verse 15.

    Luke 5 chapter mention

  62. But now, even more,

  63. the report about him went abroad,

  64. and great crowds gathered to hear him

  65. and be healed of their infirmities.

  66. Just over the page of chapter 6 and verses 47 and 48.

  67. Everyone who comes to me

  68. and hears my word and does them,

  69. I will show you what he is like.

  70. He is like a man building a house

  71. who dug deep and laid the foundation on the rock.

  72. We'll go to chapter 8 and verse 15.

  73. As for that,

  74. in the good soil,

  75. there are those who,

  76. hearing the word,

  77. hold it fast in an honest and good heart

  78. and bear fruit with patience.

  79. Chapter 8, verse 20 and 21.

  80. And he was told,

  81. your mother and your brothers

  82. are standing outside desiring to see you.

  83. But he answered them,

  84. my mother and my brothers

  85. are those who hear the word of God

  86. and do it.

  87. Chapter 9, verse 35.

  88. Chapter 9, verse 35.

  89. And a voice came out of the cloud saying,

  90. this is my son,

  91. my chosen one,

  92. listen to him.

  93. And as we read a couple of weeks ago,

  94. chapter 10 and verse 16.

  95. The one who hears you,

  96. hears me

  97. and the one who rejects,

  98. you reject me

  99. and the one who rejects him,

  100. who sent me.

  101. Chapter 10, verse 24.

  102. For I tell you that many prophets and kings

  103. decided to see what you see

  104. and did not see it

  105. and to hear what you hear

  106. and did not hear it.

  107. You see,

  108. it's not an obscure little theme

  109. in Luke's gospel.

  110. It's central.

  111. Perhaps we could even say,

  112. actually,

  113. it's paramount.

  114. And noticing that

  115. will help us understand

  116. Jesus' reaction to Martha here.

  117. But for now,

  118. we're noticing Mary.

  119. And she has learned,

  120. doesn't she,

  121. this lady,

  122. she's learned,

  123. it seems,

  124. just how important it is

  125. to listen to Jesus.

  126. But what of her sister?

  127. What about the sister

  128. who does speak?

  129. What about Martha?

  130. Well, Luke tells us

  131. that Jesus arrived at her home

  132. and Martha welcomed him.

  133. It's quite likely,

  134. I guess,

  135. that welcoming Jesus

  136. meant welcoming his 12 disciples

  137. who were on the road with him too.

  138. She opens up her home.

  139. And Martha is almost certainly

  140. committed to cooking a meal

  141. for 13 hungry travelers.

  142. That is hospitable,

  143. isn't it?

  144. And generous.

  145. But I think we're even more impressed

  146. when we remember Jesus' words

  147. from earlier in the chapter.

  148. Do you remember them?

  149. You might recall a few weeks ago

  150. in Luke chapter 10,

    Luke 10 chapter mention

  151. Jesus sent out the 72 followers

  152. of his followers on a mission

  153. and he told them,

  154. in the towns you go to,

  155. when you find somebody

  156. welcoming you,

  157. go on in.

  158. Others will reject you.

  159. And he told them

  160. that you will be able

  161. to recognize

  162. those who are receptive

  163. to my message

  164. by the way they show hospitality.

  165. And so it's got to be significant,

  166. isn't it?

  167. At the end of the same chapter,

  168. Luke is telling us

  169. about a woman,

  170. Martha,

  171. who is extremely hospitable

  172. to Jesus and his disciples.

  173. So this is not just a woman

  174. who's performing a cultural duty.

  175. I think we're meant to conclude

  176. that she is genuinely

  177. interested in Jesus.

  178. like her sister.

  179. She sees how important Jesus is.

  180. And what's more,

  181. we just finished,

  182. didn't we,

  183. last week,

  184. looking at the passage before

  185. about what it means to love.

  186. And we learned from the Samaritan

  187. in Jesus' story

  188. what it looks like

  189. to love generously.

  190. What it looks like

  191. to go out of your way

  192. to love and serve.

  193. And on that score,

  194. Martha scores very highly.

  195. Martha exemplifies

  196. Jesus' teaching

  197. in both these respects.

  198. And what comes immediately

  199. before this passage

  200. predisposes us

  201. as we read this

  202. to be favourable

  203. to Martha

  204. and her hospitality.

  205. And even here

  206. in these verses,

  207. the way that Martha

  208. is described

  209. is very positive,

  210. at least in some respects,

  211. because she's a servant.

  212. Look at verse 40.

  213. She's a sister called Mary,

  214. you sat at the Lord's feet

  215. and listed as a teacher,

  216. but Martha was distracted

  217. with much serving.

  218. She was distracted

  219. by much service.

  220. And then later

  221. in the same verse,

  222. the word translated

  223. as work

  224. has left me alone

  225. to serve alone.

  226. It's the same word.

  227. My sister has left me

  228. to do all the serving myself.

  229. It's the word

  230. the rest of the New Testament

  231. uses for Christian ministry.

  232. And Luke wants us

  233. to know that Martha

  234. is not just twiddling her thumbs.

  235. She's not just outside

  236. playing with the pets

  237. while Mary is in there listening.

  238. She's not sitting on the sofa

  239. reading the paper.

  240. Martha is serving.

  241. Martha is ministering

  242. to the needs of Jesus

  243. and his disciples.

  244. And in that sense too,

  245. Martha is to be commended.

  246. And yet there are,

  247. aren't there,

  248. some significant differences

  249. between Mary and Martha.

  250. Mary is sitting

  251. at Jesus' feet

  252. and Martha is on her feet

  253. working

  254. and then standing

  255. to talk to Jesus.

  256. Mary is attentive

  257. to Jesus.

  258. Martha is distracted.

  259. That's the word

  260. verse 40 uses

  261. or as Jesus puts it

  262. in verse 41.

  263. Martha,

  264. Martha,

  265. you are anxious

  266. and troubled

  267. about many things.

  268. And so while Mary

  269. is quietly listening,

  270. Martha is complaining.

  271. No doubt the frustration

  272. has been simmering

  273. in the kitchen.

  274. We know what that's like,

  275. don't we?

  276. It's not uncommon

  277. in our house

  278. for Clara and I

  279. to have guests over

  280. and for one of us

  281. to be working

  282. in the kitchen

  283. while the other

  284. entertains

  285. and talks to the friends

  286. in the lounge.

  287. and it's not unheard of

  288. in our house

  289. for the one

  290. who is working

  291. in the kitchen,

  292. whoever that may be,

  293. to begin

  294. to feel frustrated

  295. and feel that they're

  296. doing all the work

  297. themselves.

  298. Well, that's what's

  299. going on here, isn't it?

  300. Martha's simmering frustration

  301. leads to an outburst.

  302. And to put it in

  303. today's language,

  304. she's a bit of a meltdown,

  305. doesn't she?

  306. Her sacrificial service

  307. gives way to self-pity

  308. and the emotional

  309. damn bursts

  310. and she finds fault

  311. with both her sister

  312. and with Jesus.

  313. She's cranky

  314. with Mary

  315. for not helping her

  316. and she's cranky

  317. with Jesus

  318. for not doing

  319. anything about it.

  320. Well, the Lord speaks.

  321. How does Jesus respond?

  322. What happens

  323. when people get cranky

  324. with Jesus?

  325. How does he react?

  326. There's a lot of tension

  327. in the air, isn't it,

  328. at this point?

  329. And Martha has exploded,

  330. there's a meltdown

  331. and it falls to Jesus

  332. to respond.

  333. And no doubt

  334. every ear in the room

  335. was trained to hear

  336. what he would say.

  337. So look at verse 41.

  338. But the Lord said,

  339. Martha, Martha,

  340. you're anxious

  341. and troubled

  342. about many things.

  343. But one thing

  344. is necessary.

  345. Mary has chosen

  346. the good portion

  347. which will not be

  348. taken away from her.

  349. And Jesus' response

  350. is rich in compassion

  351. and clarity.

  352. His repetition

  353. of Martha's name

  354. is full of tenderness.

  355. He doesn't tell Martha

  356. what she's been doing wrong.

  357. There is no rebuke

  358. for Martha.

  359. There is only

  360. kind compassion.

  361. And yet Jesus' words

  362. do bring remarkable clarity.

  363. they clarify things

  364. for us too.

  365. Jesus clarifies

  366. that Martha

  367. is worried

  368. about many things

  369. but

  370. Martha is worried

  371. about many things

  372. but Mary has chosen

  373. to focus on the one thing,

  374. the one thing

  375. that Jesus describes

  376. as necessary.

  377. And Jesus clarifies

  378. for us

  379. that whilst Martha

  380. has chosen

  381. to do good things,

  382. what Mary has chosen

  383. is the better thing.

  384. And so his compassion

  385. is mixed with firmness

  386. here, isn't it?

  387. And Jesus is clearly

  388. telling Martha

  389. he is not going

  390. to tell Mary

  391. to get up

  392. and go and help

  393. in the kitchen.

  394. In fact,

  395. he's suggesting,

  396. isn't he,

  397. that Martha

  398. should leave her pots

  399. and pans

  400. and her broom

  401. and her tea towel

  402. and come and sit down too.

  403. Now of course,

  404. Jesus is not saying

  405. that serving

  406. is completely unimportant.

  407. No doubt

  408. at some point

  409. that evening

  410. Jesus wanted to eat

  411. and he wasn't suggesting

  412. that the food

  413. didn't need to be prepared

  414. but he was saying

  415. there is something

  416. more important

  417. to human survival

  418. than food.

  419. And that's something

  420. that the Bible teaches

  421. from beginning to end.

  422. Right back

  423. at the start

  424. of the Old Testament,

  425. God had taught

  426. the Israelites,

  427. man does not live

  428. on bread alone

  429. but on every word

  430. that proceeds

  431. from the mouth of God.

  432. And so let me be clear

  433. with you,

  434. I don't think

  435. Jesus is saying

  436. that Martha was wrong

  437. and Mary was right.

  438. He's simply saying

  439. that Mary grasped

  440. something

  441. that Martha

  442. had not.

  443. After all,

  444. Martha welcomed Jesus

  445. and served Jesus

  446. but Mary could see

  447. that welcoming Jesus

  448. and serving Jesus

  449. find their proper

  450. orientation,

  451. their proper

  452. fulfillment

  453. when you listen

  454. to Jesus.

  455. Mary had realized

  456. that you need

  457. to understand

  458. that all the other

  459. important things

  460. in life

  461. need to be understood

  462. in the context

  463. of the one

  464. essential thing

  465. of paying attention

  466. to the word

  467. that comes

  468. from the mouth

  469. of God,

  470. from the mouth

  471. of his son Jesus.

  472. So this is not

  473. a contrast

  474. between somebody

  475. who knows

  476. how to be a good

  477. host

  478. and someone

  479. knows how

  480. to be a good

  481. listener.

  482. It's not that

  483. these two sisters

  484. have got different

  485. skill sets

  486. or different

  487. spiritual gifts,

  488. it's just that

  489. one of them

  490. understood the moment

  491. they were in

  492. better than the other.

  493. Mary's choice

  494. was wiser.

  495. And what made

  496. Martha's

  497. the poorer choice

  498. was everything

  499. to do,

  500. has everything

  501. to do

  502. with who it

  503. was that had

  504. walked through

  505. the door.

  506. This is not

  507. about how to

  508. listen.

  509. This is all

  510. about who

  511. to listen to.

  512. And Mary

  513. recognizes who

  514. Jesus is

  515. and of all the

  516. things she could

  517. have done

  518. to demonstrate

  519. she knew

  520. how important

  521. he is,

  522. this is the

  523. one thing

  524. she chose

  525. to listen.

  526. And Jesus

  527. says,

  528. doesn't he,

  529. at the end

  530. of verse 42,

  531. it will not

  532. be taken

  533. away from her.

  534. The last line

  535. of the chapter

  536. is beautiful,

  537. isn't it?

  538. It's Jesus'

  539. word of promise

  540. for Mary.

  541. If you seek

  542. me,

  543. you will find

  544. me.

  545. If it's me

  546. you want,

  547. it's me

  548. you'll have.

  549. And many

  550. other things

  551. will be taken

  552. from you

  553. in life.

  554. But if you

  555. choose to

  556. listen to

  557. the word

  558. that comes

  559. from the

  560. mouth of

  561. God,

  562. it will

  563. be never

  564. taken

  565. from you.

  566. I went

  567. to see

  568. Dick Lucas

  569. this week.

  570. He's now

  571. 96,

  572. still living

  573. on his

  574. own.

  575. He's slowed

  576. down considerably.

  577. He doesn't

  578. get out very

  579. much.

  580. He's rarely

  581. in church.

  582. He's the

  583. greatest preacher

  584. I've ever

  585. heard.

  586. He's the

  587. finest man

  588. I've ever

  589. known.

  590. And he's

  591. not able to

  592. preach now.

  593. His voice

  594. is not

  595. strong

  596. enough.

  597. But he

  598. still has

  599. Jesus.

  600. He still

  601. has

  602. Jesus.

  603. What a

  604. stunning

  605. word of

  606. assurance

  607. this is,

  608. isn't it?

  609. What he

  610. has,

  611. what you

  612. have,

  613. will not

  614. be taken

  615. away from

  616. you.

  617. And with

  618. that word,

  619. Luke 10

  620. comes to

  621. an end.

  622. Now,

  623. who am I?

  624. That's my

  625. last point.

  626. Where do

  627. we find

  628. ourselves in

  629. these verses?

  630. What do

  631. they say

  632. to us?

  633. And once

  634. again,

  635. I want to

  636. return to

  637. the same

  638. application that

  639. we've come

  640. for the last

  641. two Sunday

  642. nights as

  643. well.

  644. Who does

  645. Jesus say

  646. that I

  647. am?

  648. What does

  649. this passage

  650. say to

  651. us about

  652. who we

  653. are?

  654. And once

  655. more,

  656. I think this

  657. passage yields

  658. two answers

  659. to that

  660. question.

  661. on the

  662. one hand,

  663. we find

  664. ourselves in

  665. Martha,

  666. and on the

  667. other hand,

  668. we find

  669. ourselves in

  670. Mary.

  671. Let me

  672. explain.

  673. So in

  674. the first

  675. place,

  676. like Martha,

  677. I'm a

  678. servant.

  679. And this

  680. is important

  681. to say,

  682. because it

  683. may seem

  684. less obvious

  685. than what

  686. we'll go

  687. on to say,

  688. but it's

  689. vital here we

  690. see how

  691. Jesus responds

  692. to Martha's

  693. service.

  694. She's

  695. hospitable to

  696. Jesus and

  697. his disciples.

  698. it's a sign

  699. that she is

  700. welcoming God

  701. himself into

  702. her life.

  703. She goes out

  704. of her way

  705. to love like

  706. all good

  707. disciples should.

  708. She's serving,

  709. she's doing

  710. ministry here.

  711. And Jesus

  712. does not tell

  713. her you're

  714. doing the

  715. wrong thing.

  716. And I think

  717. that's

  718. significant for

  719. us to

  720. notice.

  721. There is a

  722. place and

  723. there is a

  724. time for

  725. being a

  726. servant.

  727. Ministry

  728. does matter.

  729. And Jesus

  730. affirmed that

  731. in the first

  732. two sections

  733. of Luke 10.

  734. Do you

  735. remember,

  736. to belong to

  737. the kingdom

  738. is to be

  739. a worker.

  740. To belong to

  741. the kingdom

  742. is to be

  743. a lover.

  744. To belong to

  745. the kingdom

  746. is to be a

  747. server.

  748. There is

  749. ministry to

  750. be undertaken.

  751. Disciples

  752. serve, and

  753. so if you're

  754. a disciple,

  755. you're a

  756. servant.

  757. And yet

  758. what Jesus

  759. is pointing

  760. out here,

  761. isn't it,

  762. which is so

  763. helpful,

  764. is that even

  765. ministry,

  766. serving,

  767. can be a

  768. distraction

  769. from listening.

  770. that being

  771. a servant,

  772. as good

  773. as that

  774. is,

  775. can actually

  776. distract you

  777. from the

  778. one thing

  779. that's more

  780. necessary than

  781. anything else.

  782. And I think

  783. that can come

  784. to us as

  785. quite a

  786. surprise.

  787. In fact,

  788. it's quite

  789. common to

  790. read this

  791. passage and

  792. feel like

  793. Martha gets

  794. a bit of

  795. a raw deal

  796. here from

  797. Jesus.

  798. It's often

  799. the case that

  800. when we read

  801. these verses,

  802. our sympathies

  803. lie really

  804. with Martha.

  805. but it

  806. might not

  807. be that

  808. the reason

  809. why we

  810. really need

  811. to understand

  812. these verses,

  813. why we

  814. really need

  815. to understand

  816. what Jesus

  817. is saying

  818. here,

  819. is because

  820. the point

  821. that I'm

  822. trying to

  823. make to

  824. you is

  825. that

  826. Christianity,

  827. many people

  828. think that

  829. it's all

  830. about

  831. serving.

  832. Many people

  833. think the

  834. heart of

  835. Christianity

  836. is how

  837. we live

  838. our lives

  839. for the

  840. sake of

  841. others.

  842. they think

  843. it's about

  844. doing to

  845. others as

  846. you will

  847. have them

  848. do to

  849. you.

  850. And there

  851. are so

  852. many people

  853. that think

  854. that the

  855. good Samaritan

  856. captures the

  857. whole of what

  858. it means to

  859. be a Christian.

  860. But we

  861. saw last

  862. week the

  863. real point

  864. of that

  865. section in

  866. Luke 10

  867. is that

  868. being

  869. neighbourly

  870. is not

  871. the way

  872. to eternal

  873. life.

  874. That people

  875. cannot justify

  876. themselves.

  877. They need

  878. God to

  879. justify

  880. themselves.

  881. People

  882. cannot get

  883. right with

  884. God on

  885. their own.

  886. They need

  887. God to do

  888. that for

  889. them.

  890. And so

  891. you cannot

  892. love your

  893. way into

  894. heaven.

  895. The only

  896. way to

  897. get into

  898. heaven is

  899. by being

  900. loved.

  901. By Jesus

  902. himself.

  903. And yet so

  904. many people

  905. still think

  906. that being

  907. like the

  908. good Samaritan

  909. or being

  910. like Martha,

  911. well that's

  912. the way to

  913. God's heart.

  914. Which is why

  915. most unbelievers

  916. when they come

  917. to this passage

  918. will naturally

  919. side with

  920. Martha.

  921. other.

  922. But the

  923. surprising thing

  924. that the

  925. Bible says

  926. to us

  927. again and

  928. again and

  929. again is

  930. that loving

  931. or serving

  932. your neighbour

  933. is not at

  934. the centre

  935. of the

  936. Christian

  937. faith.

  938. That's not

  939. the one

  940. thing that's

  941. essential to

  942. being a

  943. follower of

  944. Jesus.

  945. The one

  946. thing that

  947. is essential

  948. is to

  949. what?

  950. It is to

  951. listen to

  952. Jesus.

  953. listen to

  954. Jesus.

  955. That's the

  956. difference

  957. between giving

  958. and receiving.

  959. And that's

  960. the same

  961. distinction we

  962. hear Jesus

  963. making in

  964. chapter 10

  965. and verse

  966. 21.

  967. In the

  968. same hour

  969. he rejoiced

  970. in the Holy

  971. Spirit and

  972. said to

  973. I thank you

  974. Father Lord

  975. of heaven

  976. and earth

  977. that you've

  978. hidden these

  979. things from

  980. the wise

  981. and understanding

  982. and revealed

  983. them to

  984. little children.

  985. Yes Father

  986. for such

  987. is your

  988. gracious

  989. will.

  990. I hope

  991. you understand

  992. this.

  993. That when

  994. we take

  995. when we

  996. serve and

  997. when we

  998. take pride

  999. in our

  1000. service in

  1001. what we

  1002. give to

  1003. Jesus we

  1004. can seek

  1005. to justify

  1006. ourselves.

  1007. But when

  1008. we listen

  1009. we acknowledge

  1010. that we need

  1011. to receive

  1012. from Jesus.

  1013. He alone

  1014. has what

  1015. we need.

  1016. But of

  1017. course it's

  1018. not just

  1019. in the

  1020. world is

  1021. it that

  1022. this

  1023. misunderstanding

  1024. is prevalent

  1025. it's also

  1026. in the

  1027. church.

  1028. It's not

  1029. just

  1030. unbelievers

  1031. who find

  1032. their

  1033. sympathies

  1034. here with

  1035. Martha

  1036. it's many

  1037. believers

  1038. too.

  1039. So we

  1040. need to

  1041. hear Jesus

  1042. reminding

  1043. us whilst

  1044. we are

  1045. servants

  1046. there's

  1047. something

  1048. more

  1049. essential

  1050. to who

  1051. we are.

  1052. Listening.

  1053. I'm a

  1054. servant.

  1055. And the

  1056. tragedy of

  1057. the church

  1058. in the

  1059. UK today

  1060. is they

  1061. want to

  1062. say we're

  1063. serving

  1064. Jesus but

  1065. actually we

  1066. won't listen

  1067. to him.

  1068. Last point

  1069. is this

  1070. I'm a

  1071. listener.

  1072. I'm a

  1073. servant and

  1074. I'm a

  1075. listener.

  1076. Listening to

  1077. Jesus is how

  1078. the Christian

  1079. life begins.

  1080. You cannot

  1081. enter the

  1082. kingdom of

  1083. God by

  1084. working or

  1085. by loving

  1086. or by

  1087. serving.

  1088. You enter

  1089. by listening

  1090. to Jesus

  1091. and receiving

  1092. what he

  1093. reveals to

  1094. you.

  1095. But

  1096. listening is

  1097. also how

  1098. life in

  1099. the kingdom

  1100. continues.

  1101. Listening is

  1102. at the

  1103. heart of

  1104. what it

  1105. means to

  1106. be a

  1107. disciple

  1108. from the

  1109. beginning

  1110. to the

  1111. end.

  1112. But what

  1113. do we

  1114. actually mean

  1115. when I

  1116. talk about

  1117. listening to

  1118. Jesus today?

  1119. After all,

  1120. for Martha it

  1121. wasn't very

  1122. complicated,

  1123. was it?

  1124. Jesus was

  1125. in a

  1126. lounge room

  1127. in the

  1128. flesh and

  1129. he's

  1130. talking.

  1131. But Jesus

  1132. isn't in

  1133. your lounge

  1134. room,

  1135. he's not

  1136. in mine,

  1137. not in

  1138. the flesh

  1139. anyway.

  1140. So how

  1141. do you

  1142. listen to

  1143. him?

  1144. In some

  1145. ways that's

  1146. a whole

  1147. other sermon.

  1148. But at

  1149. the very

  1150. least today I

  1151. need to

  1152. point out

  1153. to you that

  1154. is why

  1155. as Christians

  1156. we take

  1157. the Bible

  1158. so seriously.

  1159. Because in

  1160. the Bible we

  1161. read the

  1162. words that

  1163. Jesus actually

  1164. said when

  1165. he was in

  1166. the flesh in

  1167. people's

  1168. lounge rooms

  1169. like we

  1170. are here

  1171. this evening.

  1172. In the

  1173. Bible we

  1174. read page

  1175. after page

  1176. after page

  1177. of words

  1178. that come

  1179. from the

  1180. mouth of

  1181. the Lord.

  1182. And that's

  1183. why we

  1184. read our

  1185. Bibles in

  1186. our homes

  1187. and on

  1188. our iPhones

  1189. and on

  1190. the way

  1191. to school

  1192. and on

  1193. the way

  1194. to work

  1195. and when

  1196. we meet

  1197. together

  1198. on Sundays

  1199. and during

  1200. the week.

  1201. And that's

  1202. why we

  1203. pray that

  1204. the spirit

  1205. of the

  1206. risen Jesus

  1207. who still

  1208. speaks

  1209. through

  1210. his

  1211. ancient

  1212. words

  1213. will give

  1214. us ears

  1215. to hear

  1216. his voice.

  1217. And this

  1218. is also

  1219. why we

  1220. don't just

  1221. read because

  1222. true listening

  1223. is not just

  1224. about words

  1225. going in our

  1226. ears.

  1227. It's about the

  1228. truth of those

  1229. words penetrating

  1230. our hearts.

  1231. So we meditate

  1232. on God's

  1233. words turning

  1234. them over

  1235. and we pray

  1236. about them.

  1237. And we meet

  1238. with others to

  1239. talk about them.

  1240. And we read

  1241. what other people

  1242. have said about

  1243. what they mean.

  1244. And we hear

  1245. those words

  1246. proclaimed and

  1247. expounded.

  1248. So like

  1249. Mary we're

  1250. attentive to

  1251. Jesus and

  1252. we attend

  1253. to the

  1254. Lord and

  1255. his word.

  1256. And we

  1257. let it

  1258. shape us

  1259. and we

  1260. respond when

  1261. it corrects

  1262. and rebukes

  1263. us.

  1264. We're

  1265. provoked

  1266. by it

  1267. into work

  1268. for Jesus.

  1269. Into the

  1270. love of our

  1271. neighbours.

  1272. Into ministry.

  1273. And we

  1274. relish the

  1275. way that it

  1276. grows in us

  1277. the character

  1278. of Jesus

  1279. and it

  1280. teaches us

  1281. repentance

  1282. and obedience

  1283. because we

  1284. know that

  1285. there's a

  1286. real danger

  1287. of listening

  1288. but not

  1289. putting it

  1290. into practice

  1291. don't we?

  1292. There's a

  1293. danger of

  1294. hearing but

  1295. not also

  1296. doing.

  1297. And we

  1298. know that

  1299. there's another

  1300. danger,

  1301. one that

  1302. Jesus warns

  1303. us about

  1304. here and

  1305. that is the

  1306. danger of

  1307. being distracted

  1308. from hearing

  1309. by doing.

  1310. It's the

  1311. danger of

  1312. being like

  1313. Martha.

  1314. Of being so

  1315. busy trying to

  1316. be a servant

  1317. that we fail

  1318. to be a

  1319. listener.

  1320. And so we

  1321. must hear

  1322. Jesus point

  1323. this evening

  1324. at the

  1325. end of

  1326. Luke 10

  1327. that even

  1328. ministry,

  1329. even serving

  1330. can deflect

  1331. us from

  1332. listening.

  1333. And that

  1334. applies to

  1335. the person

  1336. writing and

  1337. giving this

  1338. sermon on

  1339. a Sunday

  1340. as much to

  1341. the mum and

  1342. dad of a

  1343. busy household.

  1344. Jesus says

  1345. to us through

  1346. these words

  1347. it's better to

  1348. be a listening

  1349. disciple than

  1350. being a busy

  1351. servant.

  1352. It's better to

  1353. be a listening

  1354. disciple than a

  1355. busy servant.

  1356. time.

  1357. And so let

  1358. me ask you

  1359. is there a

  1360. time each

  1361. day when

  1362. you slow

  1363. down and

  1364. listen to

  1365. God's word?

  1366. Or are you

  1367. too busy,

  1368. too distracted

  1369. to make

  1370. time?

  1371. Or do you

  1372. find that your

  1373. Christian identity

  1374. in your service

  1375. of others is

  1376. in what you

  1377. do for the

  1378. Lord is in

  1379. your ministry

  1380. or in

  1381. you as a

  1382. little child

  1383. sitting before

  1384. him, hanging

  1385. on every

  1386. word the

  1387. Father speaks?

  1388. Are you

  1389. comfortable being

  1390. alone with

  1391. Jesus or is

  1392. there just an

  1393. awkward silence?

  1394. Is your mind

  1395. full of worries

  1396. and things you're

  1397. upset about?

  1398. Lord?

  1399. Or are you

  1400. gladly focusing

  1401. on the words

  1402. of Jesus

  1403. your Lord?

  1404. Of course

  1405. there's many

  1406. things, many

  1407. many things

  1408. that are

  1409. important for

  1410. life in

  1411. this world.

  1412. And Jesus

  1413. isn't saying

  1414. that you should

  1415. give up eating

  1416. and drinking,

  1417. that you should

  1418. give up your

  1419. jobs or your

  1420. education,

  1421. you should give

  1422. up social

  1423. education,

  1424. retreat to

  1425. a cave

  1426. somewhere with

  1427. a torch and

  1428. a Bible.

  1429. He's not

  1430. saying that.

  1431. Because we're

  1432. servants, there's

  1433. work to do for

  1434. Jesus.

  1435. There are people

  1436. to love for

  1437. Jesus.

  1438. But Jesus

  1439. does say to

  1440. you there's

  1441. something more

  1442. necessary than

  1443. all those

  1444. things.

  1445. There's

  1446. something more

  1447. essential to

  1448. who we are,

  1449. humbly listening

  1450. to Jesus.

  1451. And the word

  1452. humble is

  1453. important,

  1454. isn't it?

  1455. Because this

  1456. final passage of

  1457. Luke 10

  1458. lands us where

  1459. the previous

  1460. two passages

  1461. have as well.

  1462. The heart

  1463. of being a

  1464. disciple of

  1465. Jesus is

  1466. humility.

  1467. It's the

  1468. humility of being

  1469. a child

  1470. rather than

  1471. a wise

  1472. and learned

  1473. one.

  1474. It's the

  1475. humility of

  1476. knowing that

  1477. you need to

  1478. be loved.

  1479. And you

  1480. need to be

  1481. justified by

  1482. God rather

  1483. than trying to

  1484. justify yourself.

  1485. And it's the

  1486. humility of

  1487. being a

  1488. listening learner

  1489. at the feet

  1490. of Jesus.

  1491. And humility

  1492. is at the

  1493. heart of

  1494. discipleship

  1495. precisely

  1496. because of

  1497. who it is

  1498. that we

  1499. follow.

  1500. Ultimately,

  1501. Mary's response

  1502. was not better

  1503. than Martha's

  1504. because listening

  1505. is better than

  1506. serving, but

  1507. because Jesus

  1508. is better than

  1509. serving.

  1510. Martha was

  1511. in the

  1512. kitchen.

  1513. Mary was

  1514. with Jesus.

  1515. Jesus who

  1516. deals

  1517. compassionately

  1518. with suffering.

  1519. Jesus who

  1520. sees through

  1521. hypocrisy like

  1522. a laser.

  1523. Jesus who

  1524. has no

  1525. intolerance

  1526. for just

  1527. injustice.

  1528. Jesus who

  1529. absorbed the

  1530. terrible way he

  1531. was treated

  1532. with seemingly

  1533. limitless

  1534. patience.

  1535. Jesus who

  1536. heals people,

  1537. who forgives

  1538. people, who

  1539. tenderly restores

  1540. the broken.

  1541. Jesus whose

  1542. life was

  1543. taken from

  1544. him on a

  1545. lonely cross

  1546. outside Jerusalem

  1547. as he

  1548. suffered and

  1549. bled for the

  1550. sake of people

  1551. everywhere who

  1552. have spent so

  1553. much of their

  1554. lives failing to

  1555. listen to him.

  1556. I don't know

  1557. if you noticed,

  1558. but in the

  1559. very first

  1560. verse, verse

  1561. 38, Luke

  1562. tells us, just

  1563. interestingly, that

  1564. Jesus and his

  1565. disciples were on

  1566. their way.

  1567. They were on

  1568. their way.

  1569. Let me take you

  1570. back to where

  1571. they were on

  1572. their way to.

  1573. Look at chapter

  1574. 9 and verse

  1575. 51.

  1576. And when the

  1577. days drew near

  1578. for Jesus to

  1579. be taken up,

  1580. that is to be

  1581. crucified, he

  1582. set his face to

  1583. go to Jerusalem.

  1584. And so Jesus

  1585. stops on this

  1586. journey to

  1587. share with you

  1588. this valuable

  1589. lesson with his

  1590. two friends,

  1591. Mary and

  1592. Martha.

  1593. But this was

  1594. really a detour.

  1595. He was headed

  1596. for his destiny

  1597. in Jerusalem.

  1598. That's why he'd

  1599. come.

  1600. He came because

  1601. he knew that

  1602. the only thing

  1603. more essential

  1604. to our lives

  1605. than us listening

  1606. to him was

  1607. him enduring

  1608. death in place

  1609. for us.

  1610. And that's by

  1611. far the most

  1612. astonishing thing

  1613. that Jesus ever

  1614. did.

  1615. And it's the

  1616. most powerful

  1617. word that Jesus

  1618. ever spoke.

  1619. And I want to

  1620. ask you tonight

  1621. what Luke asks

  1622. each one of us

  1623. in the gospel.

  1624. Is there anyone

  1625. who deserves your

  1626. attention more

  1627. than Jesus?

  1628. Than the man

  1629. who came from

  1630. God, the Lord

  1631. of heaven, who

  1632. surrendered himself

  1633. to death

  1634. that you

  1635. might have

  1636. life?

  1637. So can you

  1638. see why I

  1639. want to say

  1640. to you, it's

  1641. not so much

  1642. an issue of

  1643. how you

  1644. listen, but

  1645. who you

  1646. listen to.

  1647. Because there

  1648. is no one

  1649. more essential

  1650. to listen to

  1651. than him.

  1652. There is no

  1653. one worth

  1654. listening to

  1655. more than

  1656. him.

  1657. And Mary

  1658. had understood

  1659. that.

  1660. Martha had

  1661. yet to

  1662. grasp it.

  1663. You see, at

  1664. the end of

  1665. the day, that's

  1666. why these

  1667. five verses

  1668. are here.

  1669. They're not

  1670. here to tell

  1671. you that Mary

  1672. was better

  1673. than Martha.

  1674. They're not

  1675. even here

  1676. primarily to

  1677. tell you that

  1678. Mary's response

  1679. to Jesus

  1680. was better

  1681. than Martha's.

  1682. They're here

  1683. to tell us

  1684. that Jesus

  1685. is better

  1686. than every

  1687. alternative.

  1688. They're here

  1689. to tell us

  1690. that the man

  1691. who sat in

  1692. Mary and

  1693. Martha's

  1694. lounge that

  1695. day is the

  1696. one every

  1697. faithful Jew

  1698. longed to

  1699. see and

  1700. hear.

  1701. He's the

  1702. one who

  1703. every

  1704. spiritually

  1705. hungry

  1706. person

  1707. in

  1708. their

  1709. day

  1710. longed to

  1711. spend

  1712. time

  1713. with

  1714. and

  1715. listen

  1716. to.

  1717. And he's

  1718. the one

  1719. who every

  1720. wise

  1721. person

  1722. since the

  1723. days of

  1724. Mary and

  1725. Martha

  1726. has paid

  1727. careful

  1728. attention

  1729. to.

  1730. Because all

  1731. the ministry

  1732. in the

  1733. world and

  1734. all the

  1735. voices in

  1736. the world

  1737. and all

  1738. the

  1739. distractions

  1740. in the

  1741. world

  1742. only ever

  1743. last a

  1744. lifetime.

  1745. But you

  1746. can have

  1747. Jesus

  1748. forever.

  1749. one of the

  1750. privileges of

  1751. my job is

  1752. that I'm

  1753. with people

  1754. sometimes at

  1755. the end of

  1756. their lives.

  1757. I'm with

  1758. people when

  1759. they pass

  1760. from this

  1761. life into

  1762. eternal life.

  1763. And

  1764. very often

  1765. with people

  1766. at the end

  1767. of their life

  1768. there's very

  1769. little you can

  1770. say.

  1771. You read

  1772. them the

  1773. Bible and

  1774. you pray

  1775. with them.

  1776. And then

  1777. you read

  1778. them more

  1779. of the

  1780. Bible and

  1781. you pray

  1782. with them.

  1783. And you

  1784. keep reading

  1785. the Bible

  1786. with them

  1787. because there's

  1788. very little

  1789. to say.

  1790. Comes a

  1791. time when

  1792. they're not

  1793. able to

  1794. talk and

  1795. eat.

  1796. When they're

  1797. largely

  1798. non-responsive.

  1799. But what

  1800. you often

  1801. notice is

  1802. that they'll

  1803. nod their

  1804. head when

  1805. you pray.

  1806. Or they'll

  1807. nod their

  1808. head when

  1809. you read

  1810. the

  1811. scriptures.

  1812. Well that's

  1813. what I want

  1814. isn't it?

  1815. That's what I

  1816. want for you.

  1817. I want you

  1818. to listen to

  1819. Jesus in

  1820. your very

  1821. last

  1822. breath.

  1823. To

  1824. recognize

  1825. his voice

  1826. with joy.

  1827. To die

  1828. with his

  1829. words ringing

  1830. in your

  1831. ears.

  1832. To nod

  1833. your head.

  1834. That's what I

  1835. want for my

  1836. children.

  1837. That's what I

  1838. want for those

  1839. I love.

  1840. That's what I

  1841. want for you.

  1842. I want you

  1843. and I want

  1844. myself to be

  1845. a listener.

  1846. And if

  1847. you're a

  1848. disciple of

  1849. Jesus,

  1850. you are

  1851. too.

  1852. You can

  1853. listen to

  1854. other people

  1855. for as long

  1856. as life

  1857. lasts.

  1858. And you

  1859. can be

  1860. distracted

  1861. by a

  1862. great,

  1863. great many

  1864. things.

  1865. Maybe you

  1866. are.

  1867. Many of

  1868. them are

  1869. good.

  1870. And you

  1871. can have

  1872. years and

  1873. years and

  1874. years of

  1875. ministry that

  1876. will bear

  1877. great fruit.

  1878. But one

  1879. day they

  1880. will all

  1881. come to

  1882. an end.

  1883. time for

  1884. you.

  1885. And you

  1886. will

  1887. come to

  1888. time for

  1889. you when

  1890. you'll

  1891. stop nodding

  1892. your head.

  1893. And you'll

  1894. stop

  1895. breathing.

  1896. But if you

  1897. trusted and

  1898. listened to the

  1899. Lord Jesus,

  1900. the next thing

  1901. you will hear

  1902. is the voice

  1903. of Jesus.

  1904. And you'll

  1905. still be

  1906. listening to

  1907. him.

  1908. The Lord

  1909. answered her,

  1910. Martha,

  1911. Martha,

  1912. you are

  1913. anxious and

  1914. troubled about

  1915. many things,

  1916. but one

  1917. thing is

  1918. necessary.

  1919. Mary has

  1920. chosen the

  1921. good portion

  1922. which will

  1923. not be taken

  1924. away from

  1925. her.

  1926. Let's pray.

  1927. Mary has

  1928. Mary has
