  1. Hello, good morning.

  2. Good morning.

  3. It's good to be back with you.

  4. In the UK, wet the accent.

  5. It's got to be a bit of an American scream.

  6. It's flying, so it's time to come back and wet the accent for a few weeks.

  7. So nice to be with you again this week.

  8. And thanks to Paul and the elders again for the invitation to share God's word with you.

  9. If you have a Bible, please turn with me back to the passage that we read this morning and to Genesis chapter 3.

    Genesis 3 chapter mention

  10. And we're going to focus this morning on Genesis chapter 3, verse 15.

    Genesis 3:15

  11. Genesis 3 and verse 15.

  12. And as we come to think about God's word, let me pray for us again.

  13. Father, in your light, we see light.

  14. And so we pray that you would come now and by your Holy Spirit, illuminate the reading and the preaching of your words so that we might see Jesus more clearly,

  15. love him more dearly, and follow him more dearly.

  16. We ask this in his name, who lives and reigns with you, and the Holy Spirit, one God, forever prays.

  17. Amen.

  18. Genesis 3, verse 15.

    Genesis 3:15

  19. Family trees.

  20. Family trees.

  21. Family trees.

  22. We all have a family tree.

  23. Everyone here belongs to a family, to a line of descendants, to a family tree.

  24. I don't know if you're interested much in your family tree, but I've become interested in mine in recent years.

  25. On my father's side, there's a long line of Ulster farmers from the north of Ireland.

  26. And a Scottish faith mission pilgrim, my great-grandmother Christina, came from Scotland, was a travelling evangelist to the north of Ireland,

  27. and then clearly distracted my great-grandpa James, an Ulster farmer who himself was an open-air preacher,

  28. and perhaps she thought she could teach him a bit about preaching.

  29. My father's side reveals a long line of Christians over generations.

  30. On my mother's side, my great-grandpa George Roberts originated from Halkin in north Wales,

  31. before he moved to the Werrell near Liverpool.

  32. There were no signs of any Christian influence on his side of the family until later in his life.

  33. He had two sons with his first wife, Sarah, who then died in her late 20s.

  34. And then he married a young Scottish woman called Margaret Ann Houston, a young Presbyterian lady.

  35. And together they had eight children, six boys and two girls.

  36. My grandfather, Arthur, was one of those six boys.

  37. His mother, Margaret Ann Houston, this Scottish Presbyterian lady, was a divine Christian.

  38. Each night she would read the Bible with her kids and pray for them after dinner.

  39. And as I've traced the lines of these eight children that she had,

  40. there are two or three lines from Margaret Ann Houston that reveal strong Christian families.

  41. I like to think of my great-grandmother's prayers still having effect down from certain family trees all these years later.

  42. Looking at your family tree can be a really useful exercise because it can help you understand how you came to exist,

  43. how it is that you came to belong in your particular family.

  44. It can also reveal some sadnesses and conflicts and fallouts in your family history,

  45. as well as graces and providences in the family line.

  46. That's what I've seen in the family trees on both my father and mother's sides.

  47. I've seen graces and providences on the one hand,

  48. sadnesses and conflicts and fallouts on the other hand.

  49. Which brings us to our passage this morning, and in particular Genesis 3, verse 15.

    Genesis 3:15

  50. What we have here is the first mention of family trees in the Bible.

  51. We have the whole human race reduced down to two genealogies.

  52. Two family trees, stated in the most general of terms.

  53. There is the offspring of the serpent and the offspring of the woman.

  54. And what we see in these two family trees is conflict and grace.

  55. Conflict and grace.

  56. We see the conflict at the heart of the human race.

  57. We also see God's grace to the human race.

  58. The great conflict at the heart of the human race is obvious enough.

  59. It's stated in verse 15, right at the beginning.

  60. I will put enmity between you and the woman.

  61. The word enmity here is emphatic in the Hebrew.

  62. And its presence is felt all the way through the verse.

  63. The enmity begins with the serpent and the woman.

  64. Then it continues between the offspring of the serpent and the offspring of the woman.

  65. And then it comes to a climax in the fight between the individual offspring of the woman

  66. and the serpent himself.

  67. So we have two family trees.

  68. Two lines of descendants in conflict with each other.

  69. As I said earlier, looking at family trees can reveal sadnesses and conflicts.

  70. And here in these two family lines of the human race,

  71. we have the great conflict at the heart of the human race.

  72. What Cornelius Van Til called the antithesis.

  73. The great antithesis.

  74. But there's something else present in this verse.

  75. There's not just conflict.

  76. There's also grace.

  77. God's great grace.

  78. A grace that relates to you and me here this morning.

  79. Because if you're a Christian here this morning,

  80. then you belong to this family tree of the offspring of the woman.

  81. And you belong to it because of God's grace.

  82. You belong to the family of God because of the grace of God.

  83. And this verse reveals that to us in three ways.

  84. Number one, we belong to God's family because of his electing grace.

  85. We belong to God's family because of his electing grace.

  86. Look at the beginning of verse 15.

  87. I will put enmity between you and the woman.

  88. At first sight, it's hard to see where we get electing grace here from.

  89. But just think about what has happened.

  90. God had made Adam and Eve as his own special covenant people.

  91. But instead of responding in faith and obedience to God, their father,

  92. they rebelled against him.

  93. They chose to form an alliance with the serpent.

  94. The serpent tempted them to eat the forbidden fruit.

  95. And because they ate the forbidden fruit,

  96. they formed an alliance with the serpent.

  97. They stood against God now with the serpent.

  98. Instead of living for God and fighting the serpent,

  99. they changed sides and began to live against God.

  100. Boys and girls, you know what this is like.

  101. When you're playing a sports game in the park or at school,

  102. and the player on your team changes sides to go and play for the other team.

  103. They're no longer playing with you.

  104. They're now playing against you.

  105. Well, that's what Adam and Eve did.

  106. They changed sides.

  107. They started playing for the other team, the wrong team.

  108. They started living for the serpent.

  109. They joined with team devil.

  110. Instead of staying on team God.

  111. And when God came looking for them in the garden,

  112. after they had sinned, after they had switched sides,

  113. they didn't come out of the trees confessing their sins.

  114. They came out excusing themselves and pointing the finger at others.

  115. Adam blamed his wife.

  116. She gave me the fruit.

  117. The woman blamed the serpent.

  118. The serpent deceived me and gave me the fruit.

  119. And with this gleaming game, one thing became clear.

  120. There was no repentance from them.

  121. They were still on the side of the serpent.

  122. The serpent still had control of them.

  123. But then look what God said to the serpent in verse 15.

  124. He said it to the serpent directly and to the first human pair indirectly.

  125. I will put enmity between you and a woman.

  126. You see that?

  127. God promises to put conflict between the serpent and the woman.

  128. Now think about it.

  129. She's on his side.

  130. So what's God doing?

  131. He's bringing her back onto his side.

  132. He's bringing her back onto God's side and against the serpent.

  133. Eve, we might say, is the first elect member of the Christian church.

  134. God elects her by putting enmity between the serpent and her.

  135. This is God's electing grace.

  136. Because just think about what God's doing.

  137. He's rescuing Eve from the serpent.

  138. He's rescuing Eve from herself in her sin.

  139. Here was a woman whose attitude only moments or days earlier was hostile to God.

  140. Her affections had shifted from God, from loving God to hating God.

  141. Yet here is God now putting enmity between her and the serpent.

  142. Which means that he must be changing her attitude towards God.

  143. He must be renewing her affections for God.

  144. In short, God must be giving her a new heart, a new mind.

  145. And God does it not because she asks him to.

  146. God does it because of his grace.

  147. She's been making excuses when he confronted her with her sin.

  148. Even in her opportunities to repent, she's still hiding behind her sin.

  149. Yet here is God giving her something she doesn't deserve.

  150. The only thing this woman deserves is to be judged alongside the serpent.

  151. But God acts in grace.

  152. He elects her back into his family.

  153. He gives her what she does not deserve.

  154. A new beginning.

  155. A new heart.

  156. A new mind.

  157. That's what grace is.

  158. Receiving a gift you do not deserve.

  159. Boys and girls, this is a really helpful definition of grace.

  160. You hear that big Bible word used all the time.

  161. What is it?

  162. What is it?

  163. It is receiving a gift you do not deserve.

  164. Mercy is not receiving a punishment you deserve.

  165. Not receiving a punishment you deserve.

  166. But grace is receiving a gift you do not deserve.

  167. And Eve does not deserve to be brought back onto team God.

  168. She deserves to be judged on team devil.

  169. But here is God electing her back onto his team.

  170. It's the same for us.

  171. If we are in God's family this morning.

  172. If we are on God's side.

  173. Then we need to realize that the only reason we belong to God's family.

  174. Is because of his electing grace.

  175. Is the only reason we have a positive attitude towards God this morning.

  176. The only reason we have any desire for God this morning.

  177. The only reason we can sing some of the songs we've sung this morning.

  178. Is because God has chosen to put enmity between us and the devil.

  179. Because God chose to renew our affections to him.

  180. Because God chose to elect us onto his team.

  181. And why did he do that?

  182. Well just like with Eve.

  183. Not because of who we are.

  184. Or what we have done.

  185. But because of who he is.

  186. God of grace.

  187. We were children of wrath.

  188. Haters of God.

  189. Lovers of self.

  190. Jesus even spoke about people being offspring of the devil.

  191. You are like your father the devil.

  192. He said to the Pharisees.

  193. He was referring back to Genesis 3.15.

  194. We were like that.

  195. Yet God chose us.

  196. I think in Christian circles God's grace can become so ordinary.

  197. So common.

  198. So expected.

  199. We hear about God's love and grace every week in our home groups.

  200. On the Lord's Day.

  201. And so we just expect God to be gracious to us.

  202. Isn't that the business that he's in?

  203. He has to be gracious to us.

  204. Well no.

  205. He doesn't have to be gracious to us.

  206. He chooses to be gracious to us.

  207. To give us something we do not deserve.

  208. And if you're here this morning and you're a Christian.

  209. Then you have received his electing grace.

  210. And that is extraordinary.

  211. Not ordinary.

  212. That is uncommon.

  213. Not common.

  214. That is surprising.

  215. That is surprising.

  216. It's unexpected.

  217. We're going to sing at the end of this service.

  218. A lovely hymn by Robert Murray.

  219. He puts it like this.

  220. Chosen not for good in me.

  221. Waken up from wrath to flee.

  222. Teach me Lord on earth to show by my love how much I owe.

  223. Chosen not for good in me.

  224. If we're Christians here this morning.

  225. Then we belong to God's family because of his electing grace.

  226. Second, we belong to God's family because of his preserving grace.

  227. His preserving grace.

  228. Look at the second part of verse 15.

  229. I will put enmity between you and the woman and between your offspring and her offspring.

  230. Now there is some question as to what the offspring of the serpent are.

  231. Who they are.

  232. Some people say that since the offspring of the women are real descendants.

  233. From her family line.

  234. So the offspring of the serpent must be some kind of real descendant from the serpent.

  235. Some scholars say that they're real snakes.

  236. Think about in the wilderness.

  237. Snakes came and attacked God's people in the wilderness.

  238. Others say that it must just be evil spirits.

  239. I think the offspring of the serpent certainly includes evil spirits.

  240. But the fact is that later in the Bible certain people are associated with the devil.

  241. Like Cain is likened to the devil.

  242. Or Saul or Judas.

  243. Or even as I mentioned Jesus says to the Pharisees.

  244. You are like your father the devil.

  245. In other words you're the offspring of the serpent.

  246. So the Bible speaks not just of evil spirits being the offspring of the serpent.

  247. But actually people being the offspring of the serpent.

  248. Who take on his image.

  249. Who act like him in their lives.

  250. And God promises that the enmity will continue between the offspring of the serpent and the offspring of the woman.

  251. Now what does that continued enmity between the two offsprings reveal?

  252. It reveals preserving grace.

  253. Preserving grace.

  254. Just like the enmity that God sovereignly put between the serpent and the woman reveals electing grace.

  255. So the continued enmity between their respective offsprings reveals God's preserving grace.

  256. Because just think about it.

  257. If the enmity is going to continue between the offspring of the serpent and the offspring of the woman.

  258. Then that means God must continue to preserve and elect offspring of the woman.

  259. He must continue to put enmity between the offspring of the woman and the offspring of the serpent.

  260. What we have here in this second part of the judgment of the serpent is God's preserving grace.

  261. He promises to preserve a people for himself.

  262. Down through the centuries.

  263. Down through the generations.

  264. Who will fight against the offspring of the serpent.

  265. Who will have affections for God.

  266. Who will be on his team.

  267. Not the devil's team.

  268. And as you read the Bible, isn't that what you see?

  269. You boys and girls, you'll know some of these stories.

  270. Just think of Israel and Egypt.

  271. When Pharaoh tried to kill all the newborn sons.

  272. Had Pharaoh been successful, he would have wiped out the offspring of the woman.

  273. The offspring of the serpent would have crushed the offspring of the woman.

  274. Or just think about when Assyria and Babylon came and attacked Israel and Judah.

  275. Had they been successful and wiped out both nations, then the offspring of the serpent would have crushed the offspring of the woman.

  276. Would have annihilated them.

  277. Or think about King Ahasuerus and Haman's plot to wipe out the Jews in the book of Esther.

  278. Had they been successful, the Jews dispersed across the Persian Empire would have been extinguished.

  279. The offspring of the serpent would have triumphed over the offspring of the woman.

  280. Yet at every attempt by the offspring of the serpent to wipe out the offspring of the woman, what did God do?

  281. He intervened and preserved a people for himself.

  282. He continued to choose people.

  283. He continued to ensure that there was enmity between them and the offspring of the serpent down through the centuries.

  284. He raised up Moses from within Pharaoh's own house to fight against Pharaoh and rescue Israel from the Egyptians.

  285. He preserved a remnant of people in the exile to ensure that King Jehoiachin was released from prison and et at the king's table in Babylon.

  286. Later he stirred up the heart of Cyrus, king of Persia, to send his people back home from exile.

  287. God raised up Esther to save the Jews from Haman's plot to wipe them out.

  288. God's preserving grace runs like a golden thread through the pages of biblical history all the way down to us here today.

  289. If we are Christians this morning, then we belong to God's family by his preserving grace.

  290. As I mentioned at the beginning, I've become interested in researching my family history.

  291. And as I've done so, I find sadnesses and conflicts and fallouts.

  292. But I also find God's electing, preserving grace running like a golden thread through my family.

  293. On my father's side, I come from four plus generations of faithful Christians.

  294. On my mother's side, in my ancestral line, there is a child born out of wedlock.

  295. It is called an extra-marital affair between a married man and a young single lady called Nellie Wallace from the Shefflin Islands.

  296. Nellie became pregnant in the early 1900s.

  297. She later gave birth to a little baby girl called Frances Maud.

  298. And she took her to Glasgow and gave her up into a foster home.

  299. home. Frances Maud was taken in by a foster family in Carlisle who very sadly had an abusive

  300. alcoholic mother who was very unkind to Frances Maud. Frances Maud grew up in very difficult

  301. circumstances, lots of conflict, lots of fallout, and it wasn't until her late 20s that she met

  302. a young man called Arthur Roberts, the son of Margaret Ann Houston, that Scottish Presbyterian

  303. woman I told you about earlier. They married in 1935. In their first two years of marriage,

  304. Arthur and Frances had two premature boys. Neil was born at six months, he lived 55 minutes.

  305. A year later, Arthur John was born. At six months, he lived nine hours. Year after year,

  306. Frances would have miscarriages, never able to hold a child beyond six months. But eight

  307. years into their marriage, they had a boy called Alan Houston Roberts. You can see what Arthur

  308. was doing, naming his son after this woman, Margaret Ann Houston, after his mother. After

  309. Alan, they had many more years of infertility and more miscarriages, until at 44 years of age,

  310. Frances fell pregnant with a little girl. Evelyn Margaret Roberts. Again, notice her middle name,

  311. Margaret, after this grandmother, Margaret Ann Houston, the woman of faith in Arthur's family.

  312. Evelyn grew up in a non-Christian home. Arthur and Frances were not Christians. But one day,

  313. when she was reading her school Bible, her prayer book at the World Grammar School for Girls, she

  314. was converted on a sports field. And then started taking her mother, Frances Maud, to church with her,

  315. who was later converted. Evelyn grew up, married a man from Ulster, and together they had three sons. And when

  316. Evelyn had her third son, her mother said to her, you have the three boys I've always wanted. Remember Neil, who died

  317. six months, Arthur John died at six months, and then she had Alan, who lived into his 40s. That's my family history on my

  318. mother's side. I am one of those three boys that Evelyn and Margaret had. That's my mother, Evelyn and Margaret. My family history on my

  319. mother's side is full of sadness and conflict and fallout. But it's also full of grief. There's sadness with the

  320. deaths of Neil and Arthur John, these little boys who lived for six months, sorry, four and six months lived just a

  321. matter of minutes and hours. There's conflict between my grandmother and her abusive foster mother. But there's also grace. The grace of the

  322. Margaret Ann Huston and her prayers that were heard for my mother and her mother. Yes, there are sadnesses and

  323. conflicts and crises, but there's also grace woven into my family like a golden thread. And I'm here today as a

  324. Christian because of God's grace. Think about it. You read that family history, how did you become a

  325. Christian? How did it happen? That God would step in and convert a young girl on a sports field. And I would encourage you to think about your family history. If you take time to think through where you've come from, you'll see sadness and

  326. conflicts. You'll see sadness and conflicts. But if you're a Christian, you'll see grace running through your family like a golden thread. Or you'll see grace interrupting your family history and bringing you to faith perhaps as the first Christian in your family line of unbelievers. I mean, just think about why you are here today as a Christian. It's all because of God's electing and preserving grace.

  327. God's grace. We belong to God's grace. We belong to God's family because of His saving grace. That's the last part of verse 15. Cast your eye down there. He shall bruise your head and you shall bruise his heel. The enmity between the offspring of the serpent and the offspring of the woman comes to a climax in a final battle. Between an individual offspring of the woman. Notice it's a he, not a they.

  328. The offspring of the offspring of the woman gets narrowed down to an individual person. He will bruise your head. And notice he doesn't fight the offspring of the serpent. He fights the serpent himself.

  329. And notice how the order flips around. So far it's the, I will put enmity between you the serpent and the woman. Between your offspring and her offspring. And he shall bruise your head and you shall bruise his heel. Notice the last part flips around.

  330. I think to show us that in the end of the serpent.

  331. The serpent.

  332. The serpent.

  333. Now there are a number of things we could learn about this representative individual in the line of the woman. But I just want to point out three this morning. Notice he will descend from a woman. Now that's so obvious, right? Offspring of the woman.

  334. Well that's so obvious, right?

  335. Well that's actually surprising. Because it's the man who holds the power of begetting descendants.

  336. The seed required for descendants belongs to the man, not the woman. But notice how this son, this individual will descend from a woman without any reference to a man. There's no mention of Adam here.

  337. This individual will descend from a woman without any reference to a man. Now in order for the woman to have any offspring, Adam would obviously need to be involved. But notice there's no mention of him. The focus is on this representative individual coming from the woman. What we have here I think is the faintest echoes of the virgin birth. The person will descend from a woman with no reference to a woman.

  338. The second, he will be a son. The very fact that this person is a he who descends from a woman tells us that he will be a son. A son is going to come and fight the serpent. And all the way through the Bible, that's the controlling category for this person who is coming.

  339. It's not prophet, it's not prophet, it's not priest, it's not king, it's not Messiah. The controlling category for the coming individual from the offspring of the woman is a son. A son is coming. Adam was called God's son. But he forfeited the right. So God promised another son.

  340. Abraham was promised a son. Abraham was promised a son. Abraham was promised a son through whom he would be made into a great nation. David was promised a son through whom his kingdom would be established forever. All the way through the Bible we are waiting for a son to come.

  341. a son who will come and fight the serpent

  342. on behalf of his people

  343. the offspring of the woman

  344. will be a son

  345. he will come from the offspring of the woman

  346. without any reference to his father

  347. he will be a son

  348. and third

  349. he will be a victorious but suffering son

  350. the offspring will bruise the serpent's head

  351. but the serpent will bruise his heel

  352. precisely because the serpent has been cursed

  353. to crawl on his belly all the days of his life

  354. it can only bite at the person's heel

  355. the curse in verse 14 ensures the victory

  356. in verse 15

  357. the serpent from its humiliated position can only injure

  358. it cannot kill

  359. but for this upright man

  360. who is standing

  361. he has the immediate advantage

  362. and so he can stand on the serpent's head and crush him

  363. and since he will crush him

  364. the point is that he saves

  365. the offspring of the woman

  366. from the power of the serpent

  367. the offspring of the woman saves those people

  368. even though he himself becomes injured in the fight

  369. it's as if as he goes to crush the serpent in the head

  370. the serpent bites him in the heel

  371. here is God's saving grace

  372. God provides a representative son

  373. who will descend from over him

  374. to fight and triumph over the serpent

  375. even though he himself is injured in the fight

  376. he will be a victorious but suffering son

  377. what's interesting

  378. is to trace the development of this verse

  379. through the whole bible

  380. Sinclair Ferguson put it well

  381. Genesis 3.15

  382. is like the whole bible

  383. with the rest of the old testament

  384. as a footnote

  385. so boys and girls

  386. if you ever want to summarize the whole bible

  387. just quote Genesis 3.15

  388. and just say to your parents

  389. the rest of the bible

  390. is a footnote

  391. Genesis 3.15

  392. because what's interesting

  393. is you trace this promise

  394. through the bible

  395. what you see is that God

  396. gets victory over his enemies

  397. often with a blow to the head

  398. Joshua captures the five Aborite kings

  399. and gets his commanders to lie on the ground

  400. and then they stand on their necks

  401. before he hangs them on the trees

  402. Deborah and Barak fight for Israel

  403. against Sisera

  404. the representative of the king of Hazor

  405. who eventually gets a tent peg

  406. where?

  407. in the head

  408. also in Judges of Emelech

  409. gets a millstone to the head

  410. think about David

  411. boys and girls

  412. where did David throw the stone

  413. that killed Goliath?

  414. did it hit him in the knee?

  415. no

  416. it hit him in the head

  417. it was a blow to the head

  418. David was a mini Messiah

  419. the son of God

  420. fighting

  421. the representative

  422. arch enemy

  423. of his people Goliath

  424. and he killed him

  425. with a blow to the head

  426. in other words

  427. as the Old Testament develops

  428. you see that God

  429. saves his people

  430. through a chosen representative

  431. who defeats their enemies

  432. often by inflicting

  433. a deadly blow

  434. to the head

  435. all of these fights

  436. are miniature dramas

  437. of Genesis 3.15

  438. each of them pointing forward

  439. to that ultimate fight

  440. between the representative

  441. of offspring of the woman

  442. and the serpent

  443. these were only little skirmishes

  444. in biblical history

  445. waiting for the great battle

  446. between this son

  447. and the serpent

  448. and it's in the Gospels

  449. that this fight

  450. comes to its fulfillment

  451. in the life

  452. death

  453. resurrection

  454. of Jesus Christ

  455. just think about

  456. when Jesus was born

  457. what did King Herod

  458. try to do to him

  459. try to kill him

  460. during his temptations

  461. what did Satan

  462. try to do

  463. he came to fight him

  464. in the wilderness

  465. and tempt him

  466. just think about

  467. during his ministry

  468. the Pharisees

  469. and the scribes

  470. opposed him

  471. and tried to plot

  472. to kill him

  473. later on

  474. Satan entered

  475. Judas Iscariot

  476. who then betrayed Jesus

  477. which led to his

  478. trial

  479. and crucifixion

  480. Satan

  481. the serpent

  482. went to war

  483. against Jesus

  484. the son

  485. he tried to strike him

  486. in the heel

  487. he tried to bite him

  488. and at first sight

  489. the strike looked

  490. like it was a deadly one

  491. Jesus hangs on a cross

  492. dead

  493. he lies

  494. in a tomb

  495. dead

  496. it seems like

  497. the serpent

  498. has triumphed

  499. over the offspring

  500. of the woman

  501. but when Jesus dies

  502. notice

  503. who is standing

  504. near the cross

  505. watching

  506. you know how

  507. the gospel writers

  508. talk about

  509. there were women

  510. standing by

  511. and it names them

  512. two women

  513. called Mary

  514. one of her

  515. was his mother

  516. and we Protestants

  517. get all very nervous

  518. at this point

  519. Mary's

  520. getting too close

  521. to the cross

  522. you know

  523. get her away

  524. from the cross

  525. so Jesus is our

  526. savior

  527. Mary's got nothing

  528. to do with it

  529. and that's true

  530. Mary doesn't save us

  531. in any way whatsoever

  532. but why is Mary

  533. mentioned

  534. as standing

  535. by the cross

  536. because on the cross

  537. is the offspring

  538. of the woman

  539. on the cross

  540. is the offspring

  541. of the woman

  542. it's interesting

  543. that in his

  544. first miracle

  545. miracle

  546. Jesus refers

  547. to his mother

  548. as woman

  549. woman

  550. my time

  551. has not yet come

  552. he was alluding

  553. back to

  554. Genesis 3.15

  555. and do you remember

  556. the place name

  557. where Jesus dies

  558. Golgotha

  559. the place of the

  560. skull

  561. and he

  562. shall crush

  563. your head

  564. first Adam

  565. failed to crush

  566. the serpent

  567. by a tree

  568. and lost

  569. his bride

  570. Jesus

  571. crushes

  572. the serpent

  573. on a tree

  574. and saves

  575. his bride

  576. he kneels

  577. the serpent

  578. to the tree

  579. puts it

  580. in a grave

  581. and he did

  582. it for all

  583. of us

  584. if we trust

  585. in the Lord

  586. Jesus

  587. this is the

  588. gospel

  589. of grace

  590. Jesus

  591. the representative

  592. son

  593. fought

  594. on our

  595. behalf

  596. crushed

  597. the devil

  598. it cost

  599. him his

  600. life

  601. he has

  602. the scars

  603. to prove

  604. it

  605. just like

  606. any man

  607. who's ever

  608. bitten by a snake

  609. has scars

  610. to prove it

  611. Jesus

  612. has the scars

  613. to prove

  614. that he went

  615. into battle

  616. with the devil

  617. he did it

  618. to save us

  619. this is God's

  620. saving grace

  621. this is the

  622. third reason

  623. why we belong

  624. to God's family

  625. because of his

  626. saving grace

  627. while we were

  628. still sinners

  629. while we were

  630. still enemies

  631. Jesus died

  632. for us

  633. while we were

  634. on Satan's

  635. team

  636. Jesus died

  637. for us

  638. to bring us

  639. back onto

  640. God's team

  641. God sent

  642. his son

  643. to fight

  644. the devil

  645. and bring us

  646. back onto

  647. his team

  648. this is the

  649. great good news

  650. of God's

  651. great grace

  652. grace

  653. the question

  654. we each need

  655. to ask ourselves

  656. this morning

  657. is

  658. have we

  659. experienced

  660. this electing

  661. preserving

  662. saving

  663. grace

  664. so let me

  665. ask you

  666. which family

  667. tree

  668. do you belong

  669. to

  670. which family

  671. are you in

  672. the offspring

  673. of the serpent

  674. or the offspring

  675. of the woman

  676. you may say

  677. well I don't

  678. belong to either

  679. family tree

  680. whose are

  681. viable family

  682. trees

  683. that's all

  684. very interesting

  685. do you know

  686. what I mean

  687. but not that

  688. interested myself

  689. well

  690. listen to Jesus

  691. if you are not

  692. for me

  693. you are against

  694. me

  695. if we're not

  696. on God's side

  697. this morning

  698. then we need

  699. to know

  700. that we are

  701. on the side

  702. of the serpent

  703. whether we like

  704. it or not

  705. whether we agree

  706. with it or not

  707. whether we believe

  708. it or not

  709. it doesn't

  710. change reality

  711. the reality

  712. is

  713. we are in

  714. one of these

  715. two family

  716. trees

  717. and Jesus

  718. says if you're

  719. against me

  720. you're in

  721. the serpent

  722. the serpent's

  723. family tree

  724. you're in the

  725. offspring of the

  726. serpent

  727. but if you

  728. are for me

  729. then you have

  730. received

  731. my electing

  732. preserving

  733. and saving

  734. grace

  735. if we are

  736. Christians here

  737. this morning

  738. if we've

  739. repented of

  740. our sin

  741. put our faith

  742. in the Lord

  743. Jesus

  744. then we are

  745. united by

  746. faith to

  747. that son

  748. the son

  749. of the woman

  750. the victorious

  751. but suffering

  752. son who

  753. crushed

  754. the serpent

  755. and if we

  756. belong to him

  757. then it is

  758. all by

  759. God's grace

  760. we've sung it

  761. this morning

  762. already

  763. what a mystery

  764. I see

  765. what a miracle

  766. has joined me

  767. to this life

  768. that never

  769. ends

  770. let us pray

  771. a dream
