  1. Hebrews chapter 2.

    Hebrews 2 chapter mention

  2. I want to spend the next two Sunday mornings

  3. !

  4. The writer to the Hebrews is quoting the Old Testament, Psalm 8,

  5. and he asks the question, doesn't he,

  6. what is man?

  7. What is man?

  8. What is woman?

  9. And then in verse 9, he really gives us the answer to that in a very profound way,

  10. where he tells us we see Jesus.

  11. That's really the answer to the question in verse 5.

  12. What is man?

  13. See Jesus.

  14. Jesus.

  15. If you hear this, isn't it?

  16. I hid it in a supermarket not long ago.

  17. I love the human race.

  18. All of my family belong to it.

  19. And some of my husband's family too.

  20. And I don't know if you realize you're part of the human race.

  21. There is only one race.

  22. I think we've got to keep saying that.

  23. There's one race.

  24. And that's the human race.

  25. The Apostle Paul, when he's speaking at the Areopagus in Athens,

  26. he's debating there with the intelligentsia of the day.

  27. And he told them and he tells us that from one man, God has created every nation to inhabit the whole earth.

  28. So that means there is only one race.

  29. It's the human race.

  30. We're part of the same race.

  31. This morning, it doesn't matter where you come from.

  32. It doesn't matter what the color of your skin is.

  33. It doesn't matter what language you speak.

  34. There's one race, one human race, and we are human beings.

  35. And so the question, I think that Psalm 8 is asking and verse 5 is asking,

  36. what does it mean to belong to the human race?

  37. What does it mean to be a human being?

  38. There's a lovely story told about the 19th century philosopher Schopenhauer.

  39. Schopenhauer, as you can tell, I've not done much reading of him.

  40. But Schopenhauer was like many, many academics,

  41. and he wasn't very interested in his personal appearance.

  42. He wasn't too worried what he looked like.

  43. He was sitting on a park bench in a park,

  44. apparently looking more like a tramp than a professor.

  45. He was very disheveled.

  46. And he was approached by a policeman who said,

  47. Jim, who do you think you are?

  48. And he said, I wish to God I knew.

  49. What does it mean for you?

  50. What does it mean to be a human being?

  51. To belong to the human race?

  52. And the answer to that question is found in the incarnation of Jesus.

  53. The God who became man.

  54. And that is why it could be argued that Christianity is properly understood,

  55. actually really is true humanism.

  56. As opposed to the mysticism and other worldliness of other religions.

  57. So someone has said, I would rather be found in Christ than lost in God.

  58. I'd rather be found in Christ than lost in God.

  59. And so don't think that Christianity is losing yourself in God.

  60. That's mysticism.

  61. Christianity is being found in Jesus Christ.

  62. Christianity is, as you come and put yourself under the rule of King Jesus,

  63. you discover who you really are.

  64. Who you were created to be.

  65. You find your true identity as a human being in Christ.

  66. And so there's two huge ideas in this passage and I want to draw it out.

  67. Let me put it like this.

  68. There is the man who would be God.

  69. That's you.

  70. That's me.

  71. That's Adam, the first man.

  72. The man who would be God.

  73. And then there is the God who became man.

  74. So those two things.

  75. The man who would be God, verses 6 to 8.

  76. He's quoting from Psalm 8.

  77. And the question that Psalm raises is, what is man?

  78. There's many answers to that question.

  79. What is a human being?

  80. Some of them are profound.

  81. Some of them are ridiculous, aren't they?

  82. Plato once defined man as a featherless bipod.

  83. One day one of his students brought a plucked chicken into the lecture hall.

  84. Much to his embarrassment said, is this all we are?

  85. Is that all a human being is?

  86. A plucked chicken?

  87. A naked ape?

  88. Is that what we are?

  89. Someone with far too much time on their hands has worked out that the average human being,

  90. that's you, has got enough fat for seven bars of soap.

  91. Iron enough for one medium-sized nail.

  92. Phosphorous enough to tip 2,200 matches.

  93. Potash enough to explode a toy crane.

  94. Sulfur enough to rid one dog of fleas.

  95. That's what you are, chemically.

  96. Is that all you are as a human being?

  97. It's interesting, isn't it?

  98. Even the most convinced atheist faced with the choice of having to run over a child or a dog

  99. would choose the child.

  100. Even the most hardened atheist you know, if they were faced with that dilemma,

  101. what's the difference between a dog and a child?

  102. What is a human being?

  103. Isn't it surely just a highly developed animal?

  104. Is he an undeveloped child, as Darwin thought?

  105. Freud taught.

  106. Is a human being a cog in a machine?

  107. An economic unit, like Marx believed?

  108. There's loads of different answers, aren't there, to this question.

  109. Mark Twain apologized for man by saying that God made man at the end of a very busy week.

  110. Because he was tired.

  111. What is man?

  112. Well, the answer is, if you look at these verses in verses 6 to 8,

  113. and he's quoting from the Old Testament,

  114. and he's telling us the Bible's answer to this question.

  115. What is man?

  116. That you're mindful of him.

  117. You are mindful of him.

  118. Or the son of man that you care for him.

  119. You made him a little lower,

  120. a little while lower than the angels.

  121. You've crowned him with glory and honor.

  122. You see, God created human beings.

  123. And he made us a little lower than the angels.

  124. And when he created this world in which we live,

  125. he gave us this world to cultivate and care for.

  126. To nurture it.

  127. And that means it's our responsibility to seek peace,

  128. to work and act justly,

  129. to care for the environment that God has put us in.

  130. That's how God created us, to rule over his world.

  131. But at present, look what it says.

  132. You've made man a little lower than the angels.

  133. You've crowned him with glory and with honor.

  134. And then verse 8,

  135. you've put everything in subjection under his feet.

  136. That's problematic, isn't it?

  137. Because not everything is under human beings' feet.

  138. The world is not under our feet.

  139. The world is not under our control.

  140. Everybody wants to rule the world,

  141. according to Tears for Fears.

  142. Frank Sinatra's favorite song was,

  143. If I Rule the World.

  144. I'm really up to date, aren't I?

  145. You'll have a George Formby illustration in a minute.

  146. But we want to thank God.

  147. We don't rule the world, don't we?

  148. Thank God I don't rule the world.

  149. I can't even organize my diary.

  150. Imagine everything was under my control.

  151. It would be a disaster.

  152. And it's not just me, is it?

  153. When you look around us at human beings,

  154. what do we see?

  155. We don't see everything in control, in its place.

  156. That's not how the world is, is it?

  157. Martin Luther King famously said,

  158. we have guided missiles and unguided men.

  159. So we've got the technology, haven't we,

  160. in your pockets to do astonishing things.

  161. Man can walk on the moon,

  162. but we can't live together.

  163. We've got the scientific know-how

  164. to feed the world millions,

  165. many times over,

  166. but still a quarter of the world's population

  167. are starving.

  168. And the long history of the human race

  169. shows that human beings,

  170. men and women,

  171. often behave more like slaves

  172. than sovereigns.

  173. What is man?

  174. God made man a little lower

  175. than the angels to rule,

  176. to put everything under his feet,

  177. and we're meant to be sovereigns,

  178. ruling under the authority of God,

  179. the world that he's given us.

  180. A world that is perfectly suited

  181. to our needs,

  182. but we can't live like that.

  183. So back in the Old Testament,

  184. one of the great observers of life,

  185. Solomon,

  186. in Ecclesiastes chapter 10, verse 7,

    Ecclesiastes 10:7

  187. he says this,

  188. I've seen slaves on horseback

  189. while princes go on foot like slaves.

  190. If he was talking nowadays,

  191. he'd talk about chauffeur-driven limousines

  192. or something like that.

  193. But who is in the driving seat?

  194. He says,

  195. as I look around the world,

  196. I've seen slaves on horseback

  197. while princes go on foot.

  198. Paul talks in Philippians 3

  199. about those who are the enemies

  200. of the cross of Christ

  201. and their God is their belly.

  202. What does that mean?

  203. It's exactly the same point he's making,

  204. that the appetites and the desires

  205. that God has created us for,

  206. you know, things like

  207. the enjoyment of food

  208. and the ability to form relationships,

  209. the gift of sex,

  210. the context of marriage,

  211. all those things which are good gifts

  212. from God's hand.

  213. They are good servants in this life

  214. and yet they become masters

  215. which dominate us.

  216. Things that control us.

  217. And so the servants are on horseback

  218. and we are coming along behind

  219. sort of cap in hand to our own lusts.

  220. And instead of being in control,

  221. we find ourselves out of control

  222. in so many levels.

  223. Do you see,

  224. this is man,

  225. man who would be God,

  226. this is the man who would be

  227. the captain of his own fate

  228. and the master of his own destiny,

  229. but we're not.

  230. So what is the answer to that?

  231. Here is man made by God

  232. to be ruler over everything,

  233. himself and this world

  234. for the good and blessing of others,

  235. but it's not the way things are.

  236. And so here's where the great message

  237. of Christmas is,

  238. comes in.

  239. He says,

  240. what is man?

  241. See Jesus.

  242. Not the man who would be God,

  243. but God who actually became a man.

  244. We see him

  245. who was made a little lower

  246. than the angels.

  247. That's what the incarnation is.

  248. It is God become flesh,

  249. the creator entering into his creation.

  250. The king of the angels,

  251. the one who was seated

  252. below the cherubim,

  253. the one whom the angels worshipped,

  254. the king of the angels,

  255. now made a little bit lower

  256. than the angels.

  257. He takes on frail flesh.

  258. And there's three things here.

  259. We see him as our brother

  260. and as our captain

  261. and as our king.

  262. He's the king who is crowned.

  263. He's the king who is crowned,

  264. verse 7,

  265. with glory and honor.

  266. Can you see that in verse 9?

  267. We see Jesus made a little lower

  268. than the angels,

  269. namely Jesus crowned

  270. with glory and honor.

  271. He's not the man who would be God,

  272. but he is the God who became man.

  273. It's not robbery,

  274. Paul says,

  275. for him in Philippians chapter 2.

    Philippians 2 chapter mention

  276. It's not robbery for him

  277. to claim to be equal with God.

  278. He is equal with God

  279. and yet he humbled himself

  280. and made himself of no reputation

  281. and took upon himself

  282. the form of a servant,

  283. a slave,

  284. and he was obedient unto death,

  285. even death on a cross.

  286. He did not reach out

  287. to grasp something

  288. that belonged to him.

  289. He didn't covet.

  290. That's what Adam did,

  291. isn't it?

  292. Which is why we're in the mess.

  293. We're in.

  294. Adam coveted him.

  295. He reached out for what was not his.

  296. He humbled himself

  297. and Jesus is not a

  298. Greco-Roman God

  299. who lives on Mount Olympus,

  300. drinking wine

  301. surrounded by festal virgins,

  302. who occasionally

  303. looks down

  304. when he's bored.

  305. He's the God

  306. who actually came down.

  307. Tim Caller,

  308. in one of his books,

  309. retells the gruesome story

  310. of a murder

  311. that took place

  312. in 1964

  313. in New York.

  314. I was a 28-year-old

  315. by the name of

  316. Catherine Genovese.

  317. She was brutally murdered

  318. in a place called

  319. Kew Gardens,

  320. but in New York.

  321. It was a grisly killing

  322. and what particularly

  323. hit the headlines

  324. was not so much

  325. the killing,

  326. because that happens

  327. in all big cities,

  328. doesn't it,

  329. all the time.

  330. It was the response

  331. of the neighbors

  332. as she screamed for help.

  333. 38 witnesses

  334. did nothing to help.

  335. People opened their windows.

  336. They looked out,

  337. but nobody bothered

  338. to call the police.

  339. One witness later

  340. explained himself

  341. with a phrase

  342. that passed in infamy,

  343. I didn't want

  344. to get involved.

  345. According to the reports,

  346. the people opened

  347. their windows

  348. and looked down.

  349. Some called down

  350. and the murderer

  351. went away,

  352. but came back

  353. to finish her off.

  354. Jesus,

  355. Jesus didn't open

  356. the window

  357. and look down.

  358. Jesus heard

  359. our screams

  360. and came down.

  361. He's not some

  362. Greek or Roman God

  363. who lives in his own world

  364. and is not really

  365. interested in us.

  366. Jesus,

  367. here's the one

  368. who appeared

  369. to Moses

  370. in the burning bush.

  371. The angel of the Lord

  372. who appeared

  373. in the burning bush

  374. and he says,

  375. I've seen the misery

  376. of my people,

  377. I've heard their cries

  378. and I'm concerned

  379. about their suffering.

  380. and I've come down

  381. to deliver

  382. and this is the one

  383. who appeared

  384. in that manger

  385. in Bethlehem.

  386. There's a great little

  387. picture of a manger

  388. and the caption

  389. in the cartoon

  390. above the manger

  391. says,

  392. king-sized bed.

  393. It's great,

  394. isn't it?

  395. That's what happened

  396. to the king,

  397. the king of the angels,

  398. the Lord of lords

  399. didn't just look down,

  400. he didn't just hear

  401. our screams,

  402. he's come down

  403. to do something about it,

  404. to deliver us

  405. and we look around

  406. the world

  407. and we don't see

  408. the world as it was

  409. meant to be

  410. and our lives are not

  411. as they were meant to be

  412. but we see Jesus

  413. this Christmas

  414. and we want our friends

  415. and our neighbours

  416. to see Jesus

  417. because Jesus is

  418. the hope of the world.

  419. We see Jesus

  420. in that manger

  421. and it is a king-sized bed

  422. because the king

  423. has come down

  424. to do something

  425. about the mess

  426. we've got ourselves into.

  427. He's our king,

  428. he's the captain

  429. of our salvation.

  430. Look at verse 10

  431. with me.

  432. It says,

  433. for it was fitting

  434. that he

  435. for whom

  436. and by whom

  437. all things exist

  438. in bringing

  439. many sons

  440. to glory

  441. should make

  442. the founder

  443. of their salvation,

  444. the captain

  445. of their salvation

  446. perfect through suffering.

  447. And so verse 10

  448. is saying

  449. he's not the one

  450. who's appeared

  451. in the burning bush

  452. as an angel

  453. of the Lord.

  454. He is that one

  455. who appeared

  456. in the burning bush.

  457. He is the one

  458. who appeared

  459. to Joshua

  460. at Jericho

  461. as the captain

  462. of the Lord's army.

  463. He is the captain

  464. of our salvation

  465. and now he comes

  466. to champion

  467. our cause.

  468. The burning bush

  469. in Joshua

  470. it's just an appearance,

  471. it's fleeting,

  472. it's temporary.

  473. It's foreshadowing

  474. something,

  475. it's pointing you

  476. to something,

  477. it's a tantalizing

  478. glimpse.

  479. But now

  480. here is the reality

  481. the writer

  482. of the Hebrews says.

  483. Here is

  484. the founder,

  485. here is the captain,

  486. here is the champion

  487. of our salvation

  488. who's actually come.

  489. And you notice

  490. in verse 10

  491. do you see

  492. what he brings?

  493. He's bringing

  494. many sons

  495. to glory.

  496. Many sons

  497. to glory.

  498. Literally

  499. he's the arch leader.

  500. Literally

  501. he's the founder,

  502. he's the trailblazer,

  503. he's the pioneer.

  504. And it was fitting

  505. that

  506. God should make him

  507. perfect.

  508. In other words,

  509. Jesus is perfectly

  510. suited to this job

  511. of saving.

  512. Perfectly

  513. suited

  514. to this job

  515. of saving

  516. through suffering.

  517. suffering.

  518. So it's not

  519. enough for him

  520. to come

  521. and for him

  522. to appear.

  523. He has to

  524. become one

  525. of us.

  526. He has to

  527. take frail

  528. human flesh

  529. in order to

  530. bleed and die.

  531. It was

  532. fitting

  533. that God

  534. should make

  535. the captain

  536. of our salvation

  537. perfectly

  538. suited

  539. through suffering.

  540. So imagine

  541. someone is trapped

  542. in a burning

  543. building.

  544. you don't

  545. send someone

  546. just in a pair

  547. of Speedos

  548. into that burning

  549. building,

  550. do you?

  551. You don't do that

  552. because that would

  553. not be fitting.

  554. But if somebody

  555. was drowning

  556. in the sea,

  557. you wouldn't

  558. send someone

  559. in full

  560. fireman's gear,

  561. would you?

  562. That wouldn't

  563. be fitting either

  564. because

  565. the type

  566. of rescue

  567. defines

  568. the kind

  569. of rescuer

  570. you need.

  571. Can you see that?

  572. And Jesus

  573. is exactly

  574. the kind

  575. of rescuer

  576. that you need.

  577. There's an

  578. old acronym.

  579. Jesus,

  580. you take

  581. the letters,

  582. Jesus

  583. exactly

  584. suits

  585. us

  586. sinners.

  587. Jesus,

  588. Jesus

  589. exactly

  590. suits

  591. us

  592. sinners.

  593. sinners.

  594. He's the

  595. God who

  596. became man

  597. in order to

  598. suffer and

  599. bleed and

  600. die for

  601. our sins.

  602. He's put

  603. on the

  604. uniform of

  605. our humanity,

  606. if I can put

  607. it like that.

  608. He's become

  609. an authentic

  610. human being

  611. in every sense

  612. of the word,

  613. psychologically,

  614. emotionally,

  615. spiritually.

  616. He's become

  617. one of us

  618. in order to

  619. rescue us.

  620. Jesus

  621. exactly

  622. suits us

  623. as sinners.

  624. He's not only

  625. the king

  626. and the

  627. captain,

  628. but notice

  629. also he's

  630. our brother.

  631. Verse 11

  632. and 12.

  633. For he

  634. who

  635. sanctifies

  636. these,

  637. he who

  638. sets us

  639. apart,

  640. and those

  641. who are

  642. sanctified,

  643. all of

  644. one source,

  645. that is

  646. why he

  647. is not

  648. ashamed to

  649. call them

  650. brothers.

  651. Saying,

  652. I will

  653. tell of

  654. your name,

  655. God,

  656. to my

  657. brothers,

  658. and in

  659. the midst

  660. of the

  661. congregation,

  662. I will

  663. sing your

  664. praise.

  665. And again,

  666. I will

  667. put my

  668. trust in

  669. him,

  670. and again,

  671. behold,

  672. I,

  673. look,

  674. I and

  675. the

  676. children

  677. God has

  678. given

  679. me.

  680. That's

  681. what

  682. Christmas

  683. means.

  684. It means

  685. that the

  686. God who

  687. created us

  688. has now

  689. actually come

  690. amongst us

  691. and has

  692. brought us

  693. into his

  694. family.

  695. And it

  696. says,

  697. doesn't it,

  698. Jesus is

  699. not ashamed

  700. to call us

  701. brothers.

  702. brothers.

  703. Our

  704. Western

  705. individualistic

  706. society is

  707. quite different

  708. to Jesus.

  709. In the

  710. world of the

  711. New Testament,

  712. family matters

  713. much more

  714. than it does

  715. even in our

  716. culture.

  717. And so if

  718. you go for a

  719. job today,

  720. you come up

  721. with a CV

  722. and you come

  723. up with

  724. references,

  725. you list

  726. your achievements

  727. and your

  728. accomplishments

  729. and that is

  730. what will

  731. get you the

  732. job.

  733. But in the

  734. ancient world,

  735. in the New

  736. Testament world,

  737. it wasn't

  738. like that

  739. at all.

  740. And in

  741. lots of

  742. cultures today,

  743. maybe some

  744. of the

  745. cultures you

  746. come from,

  747. it's not

  748. like that.

  749. That you're

  750. not so much

  751. a product of

  752. your own

  753. choices and

  754. your own

  755. decisions,

  756. you are

  757. actually a

  758. product of

  759. your family.

  760. And so

  761. what they

  762. want is,

  763. if you are

  764. going to

  765. commend

  766. yourself to

  767. an employer

  768. or someone

  769. in the

  770. ancient world,

  771. what they

  772. want is not

  773. so much a

  774. CV, a

  775. list of

  776. all your

  777. accomplishments

  778. and all your

  779. achievements,

  780. but what

  781. they want

  782. is your

  783. family tree.

  784. What family

  785. are you from?

  786. Can I

  787. trust you?

  788. And so

  789. it's

  790. interesting,

  791. isn't it,

  792. that the

  793. Gospels,

  794. what do they

  795. begin with,

  796. Matthew and

  797. Luke?

  798. They begin,

  799. don't they,

  800. with a

  801. genealogy.

  802. they begin

  803. with a

  804. family tree.

  805. And Matthew

  806. and Luke

  807. are writing

  808. the Gospels

  809. to commend

  810. Jesus to

  811. the world

  812. and he

  813. starts not

  814. with a

  815. CV and

  816. not with a

  817. record of

  818. achievement,

  819. but with a

  820. family tree.

  821. And who

  822. do you find

  823. in that

  824. family tree,

  825. Matthew chapter

  826. one?

  827. There's all

  828. sorts of

  829. different names,

  830. aren't there?

  831. it's not an

  832. exhaustive list

  833. of kind of

  834. every generation,

  835. but there's

  836. four or five

  837. women in there

  838. for a start,

  839. which is

  840. unheard of

  841. in Jesus'

  842. day.

  843. Because the

  844. status of

  845. women is

  846. something that

  847. the Gospel

  848. of Jesus

  849. Christ actually

  850. brought in.

  851. In the

  852. ancient world,

  853. women had

  854. no status,

  855. and you

  856. wouldn't put

  857. them in

  858. your CV,

  859. but in

  860. Jesus'

  861. CV,

  862. there are

  863. four or

  864. five women

  865. in the

  866. family tree.

  867. There's

  868. Tamar,

  869. sordid

  870. story of

  871. incest.

  872. Bathsheba,

  873. and the

  874. story of

  875. her adultery

  876. with David,

  877. there's

  878. Rahab,

  879. the prostitute,

  880. in the

  881. genealogy of

  882. Jesus,

  883. and there's

  884. Mary,

  885. a single

  886. mom,

  887. an unmarried

  888. mom.

  889. And by

  890. the moral

  891. standards of

  892. the day,

  893. they would

  894. be seen as

  895. the black

  896. sheep.

  897. And if you

  898. wanted to

  899. commend

  900. yourself and

  901. put yourself

  902. forward,

  903. you wouldn't

  904. put those

  905. people in

  906. your family

  907. tree.

  908. You'd put

  909. the high

  910. achievers

  911. in the

  912. family tree

  913. and all

  914. the famous

  915. people.

  916. You wouldn't

  917. put the

  918. black sheep

  919. in at all.

  920. The people

  921. you're ashamed

  922. of.

  923. But Jesus

  924. is not ashamed

  925. of you.

  926. He's not ashamed

  927. of me.

  928. to call us

  929. his family.

  930. He's not

  931. ashamed to

  932. call us

  933. his brothers

  934. and sisters.

  935. So it

  936. doesn't matter

  937. what you've

  938. done.

  939. It doesn't

  940. matter how

  941. many skeletons

  942. are in your

  943. cupboard.

  944. In his

  945. incarnation,

  946. in his

  947. becoming a

  948. man,

  949. and by his

  950. sacrifice for

  951. our sins on

  952. the cross,

  953. Jesus is not

  954. ashamed to

  955. call his

  956. people his

  957. brothers and

  958. sisters.

  959. So does it

  960. matter what

  961. they think of

  962. you in

  963. school?

  964. Does it?

  965. Does it

  966. matter what

  967. they think of

  968. you in

  969. work?

  970. Does it

  971. matter what

  972. people say

  973. about you

  974. when Jesus

  975. is not ashamed

  976. to call you

  977. his brother?

  978. He is our

  979. king.

  980. king.

  981. And he

  982. is our

  983. captain.

  984. And he

  985. is our

  986. brother.

  987. Let me

  988. try and

  989. apply this

  990. to you.

  991. What are

  992. you afraid

  993. of this

  994. morning?

  995. What are

  996. you afraid

  997. of?

  998. Are you afraid

  999. of the

  1000. future?

  1001. Lots of

  1002. people are

  1003. very afraid,

  1004. aren't they?

  1005. I was at a

  1006. party last

  1007. night where

  1008. people didn't

  1009. know what to

  1010. talk about,

  1011. so everybody

  1012. talked about

  1013. the cost of

  1014. living

  1015. crisis?

  1016. Are you

  1017. afraid of

  1018. the future?

  1019. Look what it

  1020. says in

  1021. verse 5,

  1022. can you see

  1023. that?

  1024. For it was

  1025. not to

  1026. angels that

  1027. God subjected

  1028. the world

  1029. to come.

  1030. That's the

  1031. future way to

  1032. talk about.

  1033. That is the

  1034. world as it

  1035. will be,

  1036. the world as

  1037. it should be,

  1038. and Jesus

  1039. has been

  1040. there.

  1041. And if

  1042. you belong

  1043. to the

  1044. Lord Jesus,

  1045. that is

  1046. your future.

  1047. You belong

  1048. to Jesus

  1049. in the

  1050. world to

  1051. come,

  1052. where

  1053. everything

  1054. is going

  1055. to be

  1056. in its

  1057. place,

  1058. a world

  1059. where

  1060. everything

  1061. sad has

  1062. become

  1063. untrue,

  1064. a world

  1065. where

  1066. everything

  1067. will be

  1068. as it

  1069. was meant

  1070. to be.

  1071. No

  1072. sickness,

  1073. no sadness,

  1074. no sorrow,

  1075. no death,

  1076. no difficult

  1077. Christmas.

  1078. And so

  1079. what hope

  1080. is there

  1081. of that

  1082. in the

  1083. world?

  1084. Is Rishi

  1085. Sunak

  1086. going to

  1087. bring that

  1088. in?

  1089. We know

  1090. he won't,

  1091. don't we?

  1092. But we

  1093. do see

  1094. Jesus.

  1095. And that's

  1096. why Christmas

  1097. matters so,

  1098. so much,

  1099. doesn't it?

  1100. The message

  1101. of the

  1102. incarnation

  1103. is so

  1104. relevant

  1105. to our

  1106. world.

  1107. We do

  1108. see Jesus,

  1109. the one

  1110. who will

  1111. rule the

  1112. world to

  1113. come,

  1114. and he

  1115. is the

  1116. man

  1117. who

  1118. Psalm 8

  1119. is all

  1120. about,

  1121. and through

  1122. him it

  1123. will be

  1124. true for

  1125. us.

  1126. So are

  1127. you afraid

  1128. of the

  1129. future?

  1130. your

  1131. captain

  1132. has secured

  1133. your future.

  1134. Everything

  1135. will be

  1136. under his

  1137. feet.

  1138. Are you afraid

  1139. of the

  1140. past?

  1141. Are there

  1142. things in

  1143. your life

  1144. that you

  1145. wouldn't be

  1146. able to

  1147. live down

  1148. if it all

  1149. came out?

  1150. skeletons.

  1151. We've all

  1152. got skeletons

  1153. in the

  1154. cupboard,

  1155. haven't we?

  1156. But some

  1157. are bigger

  1158. than others.

  1159. Some are

  1160. more scary

  1161. than others.

  1162. All of us

  1163. have got

  1164. a history.

  1165. We have

  1166. all got

  1167. things that

  1168. we are

  1169. terribly

  1170. ashamed

  1171. of,

  1172. and we

  1173. wouldn't

  1174. want anyone

  1175. else to

  1176. know.

  1177. We've all

  1178. got that,

  1179. haven't we?

  1180. But Jesus

  1181. does know

  1182. about that.

  1183. Jesus knows

  1184. about those

  1185. things,

  1186. and he is

  1187. not ashamed

  1188. to call you

  1189. his brothers.

  1190. There's an

  1191. old hymn,

  1192. how willing

  1193. was Jesus

  1194. to die

  1195. that we

  1196. fellow sinners

  1197. might live.

  1198. The life

  1199. they could

  1200. not take

  1201. away,

  1202. how willing

  1203. was Jesus

  1204. to give.

  1205. That we

  1206. fellow sinners

  1207. that Jesus

  1208. should be

  1209. made sin

  1210. for us,

  1211. that he

  1212. should be

  1213. made the

  1214. representative

  1215. sinner,

  1216. that he

  1217. should not

  1218. be ashamed

  1219. to identify

  1220. with the

  1221. likes of

  1222. you and

  1223. me.

  1224. With all the

  1225. skeletons in my

  1226. cupboard,

  1227. how willing

  1228. was Jesus

  1229. to die

  1230. that we

  1231. fellow sinners

  1232. might live?

  1233. not just

  1234. fellow sinners

  1235. with one

  1236. another,

  1237. but fellow

  1238. sinners with

  1239. him.

  1240. He was no

  1241. sinner,

  1242. but he who

  1243. knew no

  1244. sin,

  1245. the Bible

  1246. tells us,

  1247. he who knew

  1248. no sin

  1249. was made

  1250. sin,

  1251. that we

  1252. might be put

  1253. right with

  1254. God.

  1255. God.

  1256. So maybe

  1257. this morning

  1258. it's all

  1259. the past

  1260. and it's

  1261. not the

  1262. future,

  1263. you are

  1264. really

  1265. struggling

  1266. with

  1267. temptation.

  1268. You're

  1269. really

  1270. struggling

  1271. with sin,

  1272. and it

  1273. kind of

  1274. seems like

  1275. it's trapped

  1276. you.

  1277. This morning

  1278. the Bible

  1279. tells you

  1280. you have

  1281. a captain

  1282. and you

  1283. have a

  1284. champion

  1285. and you

  1286. have a

  1287. brother.

  1288. you have

  1289. one who

  1290. will put

  1291. his arms

  1292. around you

  1293. and you

  1294. have a

  1295. king who

  1296. will deal

  1297. with that

  1298. problem in

  1299. your life.

  1300. Maybe you're

  1301. just struggling

  1302. with life

  1303. generally this

  1304. Christmas.

  1305. It's often a

  1306. time when life

  1307. unravels,

  1308. it's often a

  1309. time when

  1310. real problems

  1311. and real

  1312. difficulties

  1313. that people

  1314. have come

  1315. to the

  1316. surface.

  1317. Perhaps it's

  1318. because you've

  1319. got more time

  1320. to think about

  1321. it or perhaps

  1322. you're thrust

  1323. into the

  1324. company of

  1325. others and

  1326. we're not

  1327. distracted by

  1328. work and

  1329. other things

  1330. and things

  1331. that we're

  1332. struggling with

  1333. and we're

  1334. afraid of

  1335. our troubles.

  1336. Advice is

  1337. often given

  1338. to young

  1339. ministers and

  1340. that is to

  1341. be with your

  1342. people in

  1343. their troubles

  1344. because they'll

  1345. remember that

  1346. long after

  1347. they've forgotten

  1348. your sermons.

  1349. It's good

  1350. advice, isn't

  1351. it?

  1352. To be with

  1353. your people

  1354. in their

  1355. troubles.

  1356. Jesus is

  1357. here with

  1358. us in

  1359. our

  1360. troubles.

  1361. What's

  1362. his name?

  1363. His name

  1364. is Emmanuel.

  1365. What does

  1366. that mean?

  1367. It means

  1368. God with

  1369. us.

  1370. It's not

  1371. God up

  1372. there looking

  1373. down,

  1374. not God

  1375. on the

  1376. sidelines

  1377. giving you

  1378. some advice

  1379. like some

  1380. coach,

  1381. but he is

  1382. the one

  1383. with us.

  1384. He is

  1385. God with

  1386. us.

  1387. In our

  1388. trials and

  1389. difficulties

  1390. and troubles,

  1391. in our

  1392. temptations,

  1393. and our

  1394. struggles with

  1395. sin.

  1396. Temptation is

  1397. powerful,

  1398. isn't it?

  1399. And sin

  1400. can ruin

  1401. lives.

  1402. Christianity

  1403. is not

  1404. simply a

  1405. matter of

  1406. believing in

  1407. Jesus or

  1408. believing Jesus.

  1409. We need

  1410. more than

  1411. that.

  1412. We need to

  1413. have Jesus

  1414. with us in

  1415. our struggles.

  1416. as we

  1417. face those

  1418. temptations,

  1419. those monsters,

  1420. and that is

  1421. exactly what

  1422. Jesus promises

  1423. to do.

  1424. He is

  1425. with us.

  1426. He says,

  1427. I've seen

  1428. the misery

  1429. of my

  1430. people.

  1431. I've heard

  1432. their screams.

  1433. I know

  1434. about their

  1435. suffering,

  1436. and I've

  1437. come down

  1438. to deliver

  1439. them.

  1440. Jesus,

  1441. your brother,

  1442. your captain,

  1443. your king.

  1444. Apparently,

  1445. it was said

  1446. of the Roman

  1447. emperor,

  1448. Trajan,

  1449. that he

  1450. was not

  1451. just a

  1452. king,

  1453. but a

  1454. captain and

  1455. a brother.

  1456. That not

  1457. only did he

  1458. lead his

  1459. soldiers into

  1460. battle and

  1461. fight alongside

  1462. them and

  1463. for them,

  1464. but apparently

  1465. he tore his

  1466. royal robes to

  1467. bind their

  1468. wounds.

  1469. Jesus has

  1470. done that for

  1471. us,

  1472. hasn't he,

  1473. and more.

  1474. Tonight,

  1475. we will come

  1476. to the Lord's

  1477. table where

  1478. Jesus will

  1479. say,

  1480. this is my

  1481. body broken

  1482. for you.

  1483. This is my

  1484. blood shed

  1485. for you.

  1486. Lord of the

  1487. Rings.

  1488. I hope you

  1489. watched the

  1490. Lord of the

  1491. Rings at

  1492. Christmas.

  1493. I heard of a

  1494. church last

  1495. year in

  1496. America,

  1497. but on

  1498. one day

  1499. after Christmas,

  1500. they showed

  1501. the three

  1502. Hobbit films

  1503. in church,

  1504. morning,

  1505. noon,

  1506. and night,

  1507. and then the

  1508. following day,

  1509. they showed

  1510. the three

  1511. Lord of the

  1512. Rings films.

  1513. Great,

  1514. wouldn't

  1515. it?

  1516. We'll watch

  1517. Lord of the

  1518. Rings at

  1519. Christmas.

  1520. I love it.

  1521. Anyway,

  1522. you know

  1523. the story

  1524. of the

  1525. Lord of

  1526. the Rings.

  1527. Boromir.

  1528. Boromir,

  1529. he was

  1530. destined,

  1531. he thought

  1532. that he

  1533. was going

  1534. to lead

  1535. the great

  1536. city of

  1537. Gondor,

  1538. but then

  1539. he runs

  1540. into Aragon.

  1541. Aragon is

  1542. the true heir

  1543. to the city.

  1544. He's the

  1545. real king,

  1546. and Boromir

  1547. really struggles

  1548. with that.

  1549. He struggles

  1550. because if

  1551. Aragon wasn't

  1552. around,

  1553. Boromir would

  1554. be the

  1555. true ruler

  1556. of Gondor.

  1557. But Aragon

  1558. is there.

  1559. Boromir really

  1560. struggles with

  1561. that,

  1562. and towards

  1563. the end

  1564. of the

  1565. movie,

  1566. he repents,

  1567. and he

  1568. looks up

  1569. at Aragon,

  1570. and he

  1571. says,

  1572. I would

  1573. have followed

  1574. you,

  1575. my brother,

  1576. my captain,

  1577. my king.

  1578. And then

  1579. he dies.

  1580. Is that

  1581. the challenge

  1582. of Christmas?

  1583. The challenge

  1584. of the

  1585. incarnation is

  1586. Jesus,

  1587. he is the

  1588. man of

  1589. Psalm 8.

  1590. Jesus is

  1591. the proper

  1592. man,

  1593. he is the

  1594. true,

  1595. authentic

  1596. human being,

  1597. he's the

  1598. man who's

  1599. crowned with

  1600. glory and

  1601. honor,

  1602. he is the

  1603. man to

  1604. him in

  1605. all belongs,

  1606. he is the

  1607. true heir to

  1608. the throne

  1609. of your

  1610. life and

  1611. the throne

  1612. of this

  1613. world.

  1614. And if

  1615. that is

  1616. true,

  1617. that is

  1618. who he

  1619. is,

  1620. well that

  1621. means you

  1622. cannot be

  1623. king.

  1624. And maybe

  1625. you don't

  1626. like that,

  1627. maybe you

  1628. struggle with

  1629. that.

  1630. You can't

  1631. rule,

  1632. you can't

  1633. run your

  1634. own life.

  1635. Because

  1636. Jesus is

  1637. Lord and

  1638. Jesus is

  1639. king.

  1640. And you

  1641. have to

  1642. renounce all

  1643. claims to

  1644. be the

  1645. captain of

  1646. your fate

  1647. and the

  1648. master of

  1649. your own

  1650. destiny.

  1651. And will

  1652. you say to

  1653. Jesus this

  1654. morning,

  1655. I will

  1656. follow you,

  1657. my brother,

  1658. my captain,

  1659. my king.

  1660. me.

  1661. Why wouldn't

  1662. you follow

  1663. it?

  1664. How is

  1665. it going

  1666. with you

  1667. as the

  1668. master of

  1669. your life?

  1670. Are you

  1671. making yourself

  1672. happy?

  1673. You're not.

  1674. Certainly not

  1675. making others

  1676. happy around

  1677. you.

  1678. Why wouldn't

  1679. you come under

  1680. his lordship

  1681. so that

  1682. you can be

  1683. the man

  1684. or the

  1685. woman,

  1686. the boy

  1687. or the

  1688. girl that

  1689. God created

  1690. you to be?

  1691. I will

  1692. follow you

  1693. anywhere,

  1694. my brother,

  1695. my captain,

  1696. my king.

  1697. Let's pray.

  1698. Let's pray.
