  1. And if you'll turn to Hebrews chapter 2.

    Hebrews 2 chapter mention

  2. And let me just say again,

  3. we'd love you to come to the carol service tonight.

  4. ! It's the easiest invite to invite other people.

  5. ! So do pop around to neighbours

  6. or send messages to different people this afternoon.

  7. Drag them along.

  8. And if you're a regular,

  9. when you come in,

  10. sit down straight away.

  11. And if the stewards tell you to move,

  12. do it.

  13. Alright?

  14. Okay.

  15. I'm speaking from an iPad for the first time.

  16. So this,

  17. yeah, we'll see how this goes.

  18. Alright?

  19. I suppose verse 16 is my text.

  20. Verse 16.

  21. Hebrews chapter 2.

    Hebrews 2 chapter mention

  22. Where the writer of the Hebrews says,

  23. For surely it is not angels that he helps,

  24. but he helps the offspring of Abraham.

  25. That's quite weak really.

  26. It should be.

  27. For surely it's not angels that he takes hold of,

  28. but he takes hold of the offspring of Abraham.

  29. When I was first thinking about becoming a minister,

  30. my minister back in Cardiff,

  31. I'm an animal, Andrew Bowden,

  32. he used to take me on visits with him to visit old people.

  33. And we used to go and visit a man called John Lawley Thomas.

  34. He was a real character.

  35. The house was a tip.

  36. And he lived in this little cottage in the middle of nowhere.

  37. And he had an open fire on.

  38. And there was a kettle continuously on top.

  39. And tea stewed in that kettle for days on end.

  40. As I think about it,

  41. you're reminded of that kind of verse at the end of Mark 16,

  42. that you'll pick up snakes and you will drink deadly poison,

  43. and it will not harm them.

  44. It was tea that had been there.

  45. Each day, just more tea bags were put in it.

  46. And his wife would pour out this fowl liquid

  47. that had been stewing for days.

  48. And she'd pour it into a cup,

  49. which you were not sure was clean.

  50. And then she'd hand it to you and she'd say,

  51. catch hold, Levy, catch hold.

  52. And it's an amazing memory, really.

  53. You're in this kind of strange little cottage.

  54. Catch hold, Levy, catch hold.

  55. She was telling you, hold on to it.

  56. It's going to be boiling hot.

  57. It had been stewing for days.

  58. And this verse is really, that's what it's saying.

  59. It's saying, catch hold of it.

  60. It's not actually help, it's catching hold.

  61. It's telling us that God doesn't catch hold of angels.

  62. He catches hold of the descendants of Abraham.

  63. And Abraham is the father of all who believe.

  64. So if you believe in the Lord Jesus Christ,

  65. if you're a believer in God,

  66. you're a descendant of Abraham.

  67. And what this verse is telling us wonderfully is that

  68. in Jesus, God has got hold of you.

  69. The whole message, in many ways of Christmas,

  70. is wrapped up in that word.

  71. You see, God is not an arm's length God.

  72. He's actually caught hold of us in Christ.

  73. He's laid hold of our humanity to rescue us.

  74. Think about that for a moment.

  75. What would it be like for God to grab hold of you today?

  76. What would that be like?

  77. Most people prefer God, don't they, at arm's length?

  78. So that famous poem,

  79. when I was going up the stairs,

  80. I met a man who wasn't there.

  81. He wasn't there again today.

  82. Oh, how I wish he'd go away.

  83. And that sums up, doesn't it,

  84. most people's,

  85. what they feel when it comes to God.

  86. Half the time we want God to be there,

  87. but the other half we wish he'd just go away.

  88. Like John Paul Sartre,

  89. the French philosopher and atheist,

  90. he said that God does not exist,

  91. I cannot deny,

  92. but that my whole being cries out for him,

  93. I cannot forget.

  94. He's saying,

  95. oh, I wish he'd go away.

  96. Most people, aren't they,

  97. are ambivalent about God.

  98. Still, most people would believe in God,

  99. but they certainly want to keep him at arm's length.

  100. And Christmas means that God wants to get up close

  101. and personal with you.

  102. How does that make you feel?

  103. He wants not just to draw near,

  104. God wants to grab hold of you,

  105. lay hold of you.

  106. Human beings,

  107. the descendants of Abraham,

  108. that he reaches out to help,

  109. but it's stronger than help,

  110. the message of Christmas is that God has laid hold of us.

  111. There's the word help, isn't there,

  112. in verse 16 and in verse 18.

  113. They're two very different words.

  114. In verse 18, the word for help is to lend a helping hand

  115. as a merciful high priest who suffered

  116. and has been tempted.

  117. And because he's been tempted,

  118. he's able to give us a helping hand.

  119. He's able to help you in temptation.

  120. But in verse 16, it's a very different word.

  121. Let me give you an illustration.

  122. If you're a cat lover,

  123. you will know if you've got a cat at home,

  124. you can't command a cat, can you?

  125. You can command a dog.

  126. You can tell a dog to sit,

  127. to heal,

  128. and the dog will do it.

  129. But you don't command a cat,

  130. but you don't command a cat, do you?

  131. Cats have got a minor will of their own.

  132. When you want to get your cat out of the house,

  133. out of the flat,

  134. what do you do?

  135. You don't just say to the cat,

  136. off you go,

  137. get out.

  138. You take hold of the cat,

  139. don't you?

  140. You've got to manhandle the cat.

  141. You've got to gather him up in your arms

  142. and grab hold of him

  143. and throw him out the door.

  144. That's the only way to get the cat out of the house.

  145. And that's the word that's used in verse 16.

  146. It's a very strong word.

  147. And that's what Jesus has done for you.

  148. He's laid hold of you.

  149. Jesus is not actually giving you some help from a distance,

  150. some kind of advice.

  151. He's come to deliver you.

  152. He's come to grab hold of you.

  153. He's come to put you into a new realm altogether,

  154. to move you from one place to another.

  155. And look how he does that.

  156. It's beautiful in the context.

  157. He does that, if you look at verse 11,

  158. as our older brother.

  159. I think it's one of the themes

  160. that we don't often explore.

  161. That we don't often think about Jesus

  162. as our older brother.

  163. I've got two older brothers.

  164. One's eight years older than me.

  165. The other one's 12 years older than me.

  166. I don't know if you've ever thought of Jesus

  167. as an older brother.

  168. There's a film, wasn't there?

  169. A River Runs Through It.

  170. Two brothers.

  171. Both sons of the manse.

  172. Both sons of a minister in Montana.

  173. It's a sad film in lots of ways.

  174. Two brothers growing up in the Montana countryside.

  175. And the older one is hardworking,

  176. studious fella.

  177. He's got a good job.

  178. He's a respected man in the community.

  179. But the younger brother's a tearaway.

  180. He's great fun,

  181. but always getting himself into trouble.

  182. Always getting himself into scraps.

  183. Pushing the boundaries of what's acceptable.

  184. And he ends up associating with people

  185. who lead him deeper and deeper into trouble.

  186. And finally, the younger brother

  187. is killed in a pub brawl.

  188. And his older brother couldn't get to him.

  189. They'd grown too far apart.

  190. It's a moving and quite tragic story.

  191. And the tragedy is the older brother

  192. saw it happening to his younger brother.

  193. He could see what was happening

  194. in his younger brother's life,

  195. but there was nothing he could do about it.

  196. He tried and he tried,

  197. and the whole film is about this.

  198. He could see what was going on,

  199. but he couldn't reach him.

  200. He couldn't get through to him.

  201. He couldn't come to where the younger brother was

  202. and rescue him.

  203. But this verse is telling us

  204. that Jesus has seen our plight from heaven,

  205. and he's come down to earth

  206. in order to grab hold of us,

  207. in order to rescue us.

  208. He is the elder brother

  209. who protects us in the playground from the bully.

  210. He's the one who comes to where we are

  211. when our life has been made a misery by the bully,

  212. and he comes right to where we are

  213. in order to rescue us.

  214. Not in a patronizing way.

  215. Older brothers can be very, very patronizing,

  216. can't they?

  217. You can be maybe a little bit resentful

  218. of your older brother.

  219. Maybe he's always done the right thing.

  220. It's a bit like the story of two brothers

  221. that Jesus tells, isn't it?

  222. The stay-at-home son who does the right thing,

  223. and the one who ruins his life.

  224. It's that sort of story,

  225. and we're told here in verse 11,

  226. can you see it, of Hebrews chapter 2,

    Hebrews 2 chapter mention

  227. that Jesus is not ashamed to call us brothers.

  228. That our older brother has come into the playground

  229. as if it were to rescue us from the bully.

  230. He lays hold of us in our sin and misery.

  231. So how does he do that?

  232. How does he rescue us?

  233. Our older brother has come because we are flesh and blood.

  234. He has become flesh and blood.

  235. In order to bleed and die,

  236. that's why he became flesh and blood.

  237. And so don't coo over the little baby

  238. and say, well, isn't he lovely?

  239. The reason that he became a little baby

  240. was so that he could go to the cross and die for us.

  241. Do you see how the passage runs

  242. from Christmas through to Easter?

  243. Look at verse 14.

  244. Since therefore the children

  245. share in flesh and blood,

  246. he himself,

  247. likewise partook in the same things,

  248. he became like us,

  249. that through death,

  250. he might destroy the one who has the power of death.

  251. That is the devil.

  252. The big brother

  253. has come to beat the bully

  254. who has made life a misery.

  255. And how is he going to do that?

  256. Verse 17.

  257. Therefore he had to be made like his brothers

  258. in every respect

  259. so that he might become a merciful

  260. and faithful high priest.

  261. That is how big brother took our human condition.

  262. He came into a broken, fallen world.

  263. He became like us,

  264. but was without sin.

  265. For this reason,

  266. he had to become a merciful

  267. and faithful high priest

  268. in the service of God

  269. to make propitiation

  270. for the sins of the people.

  271. Do you see?

  272. It's Christmas,

  273. therefore Easter.

  274. He came in order to become

  275. a priest,

  276. a sacrifice

  277. in the temple.

  278. And by the eternal spirit,

  279. we're told that he offered himself to God.

  280. We're told in chapter 9,

  281. in verse 14 of Hebrews,

  282. that he is the priest

  283. and the sacrifice.

  284. He comes and he offers himself to God

  285. as an atonement for sins

  286. so that,

  287. what?

  288. We might come into the presence of God.

  289. So that we might meet with God

  290. in his temple.

  291. One writer has said that

  292. from the road from Bethlehem

  293. leads to Golgotha.

  294. The crib and the cross

  295. are cut from the same wood.

  296. Just think about that.

  297. Here's a little poem.

  298. God in a manger,

  299. defenseless,

  300. enfleshed,

  301. Emmanuel crying

  302. and fighting for breath.

  303. God in a manger,

  304. wriggling and raw,

  305. laid out on the wood,

  306. enthroned on the straw.

  307. God at Golgotha,

  308. pierced in his flesh,

  309. Emmanuel crying

  310. and fighting for breath.

  311. God at Golgotha,

  312. forsaken and lost,

  313. stretched out on the wood,

  314. enthroned on the cross.

  315. He took flesh

  316. in order to bleed and die for us.

  317. Why does he have to do that?

  318. Well, because of what we're told

  319. in these verses,

  320. that there is a bully

  321. who has made life a misery,

  322. hasn't there?

  323. You might remember,

  324. it's not a completely

  325. unfamiliar story,

  326. isn't it?

  327. A 10-year-old girl

  328. who is snatched

  329. from the street

  330. in the suburbs of Vienna.

  331. For eight years,

  332. she's kept beneath

  333. this man's house

  334. behind a steel door

  335. in a tiny windowless cell

  336. until mercifully

  337. and wonderfully

  338. she seizes the opportunity

  339. to escape.

  340. You might remember the story.

  341. Just imagine that.

  342. A 10-year-old girl

  343. snatched off the street,

  344. kidnapped,

  345. locked in a windowless cell

  346. behind a steel door.

  347. The Bible says

  348. that's the human condition.

  349. That is why

  350. the big brother

  351. has got to come.

  352. That's what's happened to us.

  353. Look at verses 14 and 15.

  354. Since therefore

  355. the children share

  356. in the flesh and blood,

  357. he himself likewise

  358. partake of the same things

  359. that through death

  360. he might destroy

  361. the one who has

  362. the power of death.

  363. That is the devil.

  364. and deliver

  365. all those

  366. who through fear of death

  367. were subject

  368. to lifelong slavery.

  369. That is why

  370. big brother Jesus

  371. needed to come

  372. and rescue us.

  373. Because we've been enslaved,

  374. we've been kidnapped,

  375. the devil has a hold of us.

  376. The devil has the power

  377. of death.

  378. And he holds us

  379. in slavery to it.

  380. That's why people

  381. are so afraid of death.

  382. They're so fearful of it.

  383. It's the devil's trump card,

  384. the fear of death.

  385. Tolstoy wrote about it

  386. in his confessions.

  387. He says this,

  388. he said,

  389. something strange

  390. began to happen to me

  391. at the age of 50.

  392. At the age of 50,

  393. I had a wife

  394. who loved me

  395. and whom I loved.

  396. I had a large estate

  397. which without much effort

  398. on my part increased.

  399. My name was respected.

  400. I enjoyed physical strength

  401. and yet I could not live

  402. because I was afraid to die.

  403. The question

  404. which brought me

  405. to the verge of suicide

  406. sought an answer

  407. without which

  408. one cannot live.

  409. Is there any meaning

  410. in my life

  411. that my inevitable death

  412. does not destroy

  413. today or tomorrow?

  414. Death will come

  415. to those I love

  416. and then to me.

  417. Soon will not only

  418. I not exist,

  419. but eventually

  420. no one will exist

  421. who will remember

  422. anything I've written

  423. or done.

  424. Why then go on

  425. with the short effort?

  426. What is it all for?

  427. What does it all lead to?

  428. What difference

  429. does it make

  430. whether I do this thing

  431. or that thing

  432. or nothing at all?

  433. So Tolstice says,

  434. I could give no rational meaning

  435. to any single action

  436. or even to my whole life,

  437. but what was so surprising

  438. was how we can fail

  439. to see this.

  440. For a time,

  441. it's possible to live

  442. intoxicated with life,

  443. but as soon as

  444. when it's sober,

  445. it is impossible

  446. not to see that life

  447. in the face of death

  448. is a fraud

  449. and a stupid fraud.

  450. How often I've been told

  451. you cannot understand

  452. the meaning of life,

  453. so don't think about it,

  454. just live.

  455. I can no longer do that.

  456. That's a stark reality,

  457. isn't it?

  458. That's universal.

  459. What is the point

  460. of it all?

  461. If we live

  462. for a moment

  463. and then we die

  464. and there's nothing else

  465. or worse than that,

  466. worse than that,

  467. the Bible says,

  468. it is appointed for man

  469. to die

  470. and then to face

  471. the judgment.

  472. And so Paul talks

  473. about this,

  474. the Bible talks about this,

  475. the apostle

  476. in 1 Corinthians 15

  477. in those really famous words

  478. that you hear

  479. at the graveside

  480. of a Christian.

  481. And this is what Paul says,

  482. he says,

  483. death is swallowed up

  484. in victory.

  485. Oh death,

  486. where is your sting?

  487. Oh death,

  488. where is your victory?

  489. Oh death,

  490. where is your sting?

  491. The sting of death

  492. is sin

  493. and the power of sin

  494. is the law

  495. but thanks be to God

  496. who gives us the victory

  497. through our Lord Jesus Christ.

  498. Paul is saying

  499. there is hope.

  500. There is hope.

  501. I think I've told you

  502. the story before,

  503. there's a family

  504. driving along in a car

  505. and the window is down

  506. and there's a bee

  507. that flies into the car

  508. and that is annoying,

  509. isn't it?

  510. And scary.

  511. But there was a child

  512. in this car

  513. who was allergic

  514. to bee stings.

  515. And so it's not only

  516. scary and annoying,

  517. it's life threatening.

  518. The dad swerves the car

  519. to the side of the road,

  520. the little child

  521. in the back

  522. is panicking

  523. and what the dad does

  524. is he manages

  525. to grab hold

  526. of the bee

  527. and he presses it

  528. against the windscreen

  529. and he holds it there

  530. in his hand.

  531. And then eventually

  532. the dad shouts out

  533. in pain

  534. and he releases his grip

  535. and the bee flies out again.

  536. And the little child

  537. is panicking.

  538. But the dad

  539. is able to say,

  540. isn't it,

  541. look here,

  542. look at my hand.

  543. Look at my hand,

  544. see the sting.

  545. Its sting is in my hand,

  546. it can't harm you.

  547. I have taken the sting.

  548. The bee can still buzz around

  549. but it can't sting you anymore

  550. and that's what

  551. our big brother has done.

  552. He's taken the sting

  553. out of death

  554. and that is the hold

  555. that the devil has

  556. and so you and I,

  557. the truth is,

  558. isn't it,

  559. you and I are going to die

  560. and you and I

  561. are sinners

  562. and so in death

  563. we will encounter

  564. God in judgment.

  565. We will meet him

  566. and the sting of death

  567. is sin

  568. and the strength

  569. of that sting

  570. is the power of the law

  571. and we deserve

  572. God's judgment

  573. and we deserve

  574. God's anger

  575. against us forever

  576. because we are sinners

  577. and that is the devil's trump card.

  578. And that's why you and I

  579. are afraid of death

  580. when we're willing

  581. to think about it.

  582. That is why death

  583. haunts us

  584. as a culture

  585. every waking hour.

  586. But Jesus comes to us

  587. as our big brother

  588. and he says,

  589. look at my hands.

  590. Look at my hands,

  591. they've been nailed

  592. to the cross.

  593. See, there's the sting.

  594. The sting is gone.

  595. He has absorbed it.

  596. Look at what it says

  597. in Hebrews 2

  598. in verse 9.

  599. Can you see what it says

  600. at the end of verse 9?

  601. It says,

  602. he has tasted death.

  603. The Lord Jesus,

  604. the baby in the manger,

  605. experienced death

  606. with the sting in it.

  607. He was made sin

  608. who knew no sin

  609. that you and I

  610. can be made right

  611. with God.

  612. And so that's why

  613. the Christian would say,

  614. oh death,

  615. where is your sting?

  616. Oh grave,

  617. where is your victory?

  618. Because thanks be to God

  619. who gives us the victory

  620. through Jesus Christ,

  621. our Lord,

  622. and our big brother.

  623. There's a lovely story

  624. of a man going

  625. into an art gallery.

  626. It's the famous painting

  627. of Faust

  628. playing chess

  629. with the devil.

  630. And the devil

  631. is leering

  632. across the table

  633. at a despairing Faust

  634. whom he's checkmated.

  635. Apparently the story goes,

  636. a famous chess player

  637. used to come into that gallery

  638. and he used to come in

  639. time and time again

  640. and he would sit

  641. and he would stare

  642. at that picture.

  643. One day he found himself

  644. staring at that painting

  645. yet again

  646. of the devil

  647. leering across

  648. the chess board

  649. at Faust

  650. with the devil

  651. saying checkmate.

  652. this chess player

  653. looked at all the different

  654. positions of the chess board

  655. and one day

  656. there's a great cry

  657. he rings out

  658. apparently in the gallery.

  659. As he cries out,

  660. no, there's another move.

  661. It's not checkmate.

  662. There's another move.

  663. And so the message

  664. of Christmas is this,

  665. the devil thinks

  666. he's got us.

  667. The devil thinks

  668. he's got a hold of us.

  669. It is checkmate.

  670. He holds us

  671. in slavery

  672. through fear of death

  673. and Jesus comes,

  674. our big brother,

  675. and he says,

  676. no, no,

  677. it's not checkmate.

  678. There's another move.

  679. And he moves

  680. from the cradle

  681. to the cross

  682. and he makes

  683. atonement

  684. by his eternal spirit.

  685. He offers himself

  686. to God.

  687. That's the move.

  688. His death

  689. frees us.

  690. It beats the bully.

  691. It beats the hell

  692. out of it.

  693. It takes the sting

  694. out of death.

  695. His death

  696. is for us.

  697. It is vicarious.

  698. It is victorious

  699. because in his death

  700. he beats the bully

  701. who's made our life

  702. a misery.

  703. It robs him

  704. of his hold

  705. of us.

  706. It takes away

  707. the ground

  708. from under his feet,

  709. doesn't it?

  710. He comes

  711. and he accuses you

  712. and he says,

  713. you are a sinner.

  714. And we say,

  715. well,

  716. yeah,

  717. I know I'm a sinner.

  718. He says,

  719. you deserve

  720. God's anger.

  721. I know I do.

  722. You deserve hell.

  723. I know I do,

  724. but the Lord Jesus

  725. has taken that

  726. for me.

  727. He has taken

  728. that anger,

  729. that justice,

  730. that hell.

  731. And look at verse 13.

  732. I love this.

  733. Look at verse 13.

  734. And again,

  735. I will put my trust

  736. in him.

  737. And again,

  738. behold,

  739. I and the children

  740. God has

  741. given me.

  742. what I'm trying

  743. to say to you

  744. is this Christmas,

  745. if you will put

  746. your trust

  747. in the Lord Jesus,

  748. if Jesus catches

  749. hold of you,

  750. the devil

  751. loses his grip

  752. on you.

  753. Look at verse 13.

  754. behold,

  755. behold,

  756. I and the children

  757. God has

  758. given me.

  759. He's not going

  760. to lose any of them.

  761. Not after what

  762. he's been through

  763. to rescue us.

  764. Here I am,

  765. he says,

  766. and the children

  767. that you have

  768. given me.

  769. And so let me

  770. ask you as I finish,

  771. who has got

  772. hold of you

  773. this Christmas?

  774. What is it

  775. that is driving you?

  776. You've got to

  777. serve somebody,

  778. haven't you?

  779. Let me read to you

  780. like I've done

  781. before the Bob Dylan song.

  782. You may be

  783. an ambassador

  784. to England or France.

  785. You may like to gamble

  786. or you might like

  787. to dance.

  788. You may be

  789. the heavyweight champion

  790. of the world.

  791. You may be a socialite

  792. with a long string

  793. of pearls,

  794. but you're going to

  795. have to serve somebody.

  796. Might be a rock

  797. and roll addict

  798. prancing on the stage.

  799. Might have money

  800. and drugs

  801. at your commands.

  802. Women in a cage.

  803. You may be a businessman

  804. or some high degree thief.

  805. They may call you doctor

  806. or they may call you chief,

  807. but you're going to

  808. have to serve somebody.

  809. You may be a state trooper.

  810. You might be a young Turk.

  811. You may be the head

  812. of some big TV network.

  813. You may be rich or poor.

  814. You may be blind or lame.

  815. You may be living

  816. in another country

  817. under another name,

  818. but you're going to

  819. have to serve somebody.

  820. You may be a construction worker

  821. working on a home.

  822. You may be living

  823. in a mansion.

  824. Or you might live

  825. in a dome.

  826. You might own guns

  827. and you might even own tanks.

  828. You might be somebody's landlords.

  829. You might even own banks,

  830. but you're going to

  831. have to serve somebody.

  832. You may be a preacher

  833. with your spiritual pride.

  834. You may be a city councilman

  835. taking bribes on the side.

  836. You may be working

  837. in a barber shop.

  838. You may know

  839. how to cut hair.

  840. You may be somebody's mistress.

  841. You may be somebody's heir,

  842. but you're going to

  843. have to serve somebody.

  844. Might like to wear cotton.

  845. Might like to wear silk.

  846. Might like to drink whiskey.

  847. Might like to drink milk.

  848. You might like to eat caviar.

  849. You might like to eat bread.

  850. You may be sleeping on the floor,

  851. sleeping in a king-sized bed,

  852. but you're going to have

  853. to serve somebody.

  854. Yes, indeed.

  855. You're going to have

  856. to serve somebody.

  857. It may be the devil

  858. or it may be the Lord,

  859. but you're going to have

  860. to serve somebody.

  861. So who's it going to be?

  862. Who holds the reins of your life?

  863. What's driving you?

  864. Listen to what the Apostle Paul says

  865. in Philippians chapter 3.

    Philippians 3 chapter mention

  866. One of the things I love

  867. about the Apostle Paul

  868. is he's always telling his story.

  869. He's been a Christian

  870. at this point for about 30 years

  871. and he writes this.

  872. He says,

  873. not that I've already

  874. obtained all this

  875. or have already arrived

  876. at my goal,

  877. but I press on

  878. to take hold of that

  879. for which Christ Jesus

  880. took hold of me.

  881. It's the very same word

  882. that's in Hebrews 2.

  883. It means to seize

  884. or to arrest

  885. or to be taken

  886. into protective custody.

  887. And Paul says,

  888. that's what Jesus did for me.

  889. I was walking along

  890. the Damascus Road

  891. and I was going the wrong way

  892. and Jesus took hold of me.

  893. I was going the wrong direction

  894. and along came

  895. the great shepherd

  896. who came for his sheep

  897. and he took me

  898. into his protective custody.

  899. Has he done that for you?

  900. Do you know this morning

  901. that if he's done that for you,

  902. you are safe?

  903. That's where our safety is.

  904. It is to lay hold on Jesus.

  905. It is to be taken

  906. into his custody.

  907. Maybe you're here this morning

  908. and you think

  909. that would be great

  910. because my life

  911. is out of control

  912. and you're carried away

  913. by your lust

  914. to places you don't want to go.

  915. Maybe this morning

  916. you're stuck in a rut

  917. and you can't get out of it

  918. and you long for someone

  919. to come and take hold of you

  920. and to transform you

  921. into a different realm

  922. and that's why Jesus came.

  923. And he can do that for you

  924. this Christmas.

  925. He can do that for you

  926. before you leave this room.

  927. I press on,

  928. Paul says,

  929. to take hold

  930. of that.

  931. This isn't just

  932. turning up to church

  933. once on a Sunday.

  934. This is saying,

  935. I'm going to catch hold

  936. of Jesus Christ

  937. who has caught hold of me.

  938. Christmas gives us

  939. God in the flesh

  940. who catches hold of us.

  941. Let's come back

  942. to the verses we close.

  943. Verse 16.

  944. It's not angels

  945. he took hold of.

  946. It's the descendants

  947. of Abraham.

  948. It's believers.

  949. Abraham is the father

  950. of the faithful

  951. for all who will believe.

  952. It is not just

  953. humanity blankly.

  954. It is those

  955. who believe in him

  956. are safe in his grip.

  957. Men will not live

  958. forevermore

  959. because of Christmas Day

  960. despite what

  961. Boney M say.

  962. You will only live

  963. in

  964. forevermore

  965. if you're in the grip

  966. of the Lord Jesus Christ.

  967. If Christ has caught

  968. hold of you.

  969. If you're in the grip

  970. he has manhandled us

  971. in order that we

  972. might become

  973. sons of God.

  974. Tells us he's become

  975. a high priest.

  976. What does a high priest do?

  977. A high priest brings you

  978. into the presence

  979. of God

  980. and he gets the presence

  981. of God into us

  982. and Jesus wants you

  983. to do that

  984. and he wants to do that

  985. for you this Christmas.

  986. Let's pray.
