  1. Do turn me to John chapter 1.

    John 1 chapter mention

  2. John 1.

  3. So it's on page 886.

  4. !

  5. What's the identity of the baby?

  6. That's the core and the heart of the Christmas message.

  7. And John in his gospel focuses not on the events surrounding the birth of Jesus Christ.

  8. There are no shepherds.

  9. There are no angels.

  10. But John identifies for you why the baby was born.

  11. At the carol, who is he on yonder stall?

  12. And our worship depends at this Christmas on our being able to grasp who is this baby that lies in the manger.

  13. And so I've got three answers that I want to give you from John 1.

  14. The first answer is this.

  15. The baby in the manger is God.

  16. Secondly, the baby in the manger is God made man.

  17. And thirdly, the baby in the manger is God made man for our salvation.

  18. And if you take those three statements, in lots of ways they encompass the whole of the message of Christmas.

  19. The baby in the manger is God.

  20. The baby in the manger is God made man.

  21. And the baby in the manger is God made man for our salvation.

  22. The first points are much longer than the other two.

  23. So first of all, the baby in the manger is God.

  24. John, in his gospel, gives us the larger backlog in how Christmas is to be seen and to be understood.

  25. Matthew and Luke, they tell you the story.

  26. They give you the immediate context.

  27. They tell you of Herod and the wise men and the angels and the shepherds.

  28. But John doesn't do that.

  29. John gives you the larger context for the coming of Jesus Christ.

  30. It's here that our minds and our understanding are enlarged so that we see the real meaning of Christmas.

  31. And we see the real sheer glory of Christmas.

  32. So, verse 1, can you hear the echo?

  33. If you know your Bible, surely you hear the echo, don't you?

  34. In the beginning.

  35. In the beginning, God.

  36. The Bible begins, Genesis chapter 1.

    Genesis 1 chapter mention

  37. But in John chapter 1, it's in the beginning was the word.

    John 1 chapter mention

  38. In Genesis, the first book of the Bible, God the creator is at work, isn't he, to form the heavens and the earth and to form human beings in his own image.

  39. He's the creator.

  40. But in John 1, we have the same creator, God, revealing himself again in power and glory and grace.

  41. And here he is coming to make a new beginning, a new creation.

  42. And so Genesis 1, creation.

  43. John 1, a new creation.

  44. He's saying in John 1, the only parallel for what I'm about to tell you is the creation of the universe.

  45. And that is the backlog that John wants us to see in the coming of this baby lying in a manger.

  46. Echoing the creation of the universe at the beginning of time.

  47. Here is the creator God at work in his fallen world to recreate man.

  48. And four men and women are fresh in his image.

  49. And that new humanity that God here in Christ is setting about creating consists in verse 13 of those who are born not of blood, nor of the will of flesh, nor of the will of man, but born of God.

  50. Now that is the point of the description of Christ as the word.

  51. We often look at verse 1, let me read to you verse 1.

  52. In the beginning was the word, and the word was with God, and the word was God.

  53. And what preachers often do is they often want to say, well, John is talking about here a means of communication.

  54. A means of self-expression.

  55. A means of revelation.

  56. So in the same way that my words this morning reveal what I'm thinking, and what I'm speaking to you reveals what's going on inside,

  57. they communicate a message to you.

  58. And that is true.

  59. That is what John is saying in one way about the Lord Jesus.

  60. That Jesus is the word.

  61. Jesus is the one who reveals.

  62. He manifests what God wants to say to human beings.

  63. It's the revelation of God in all his glory.

  64. But the word in John 1 is much, much more than that.

  65. Because do you remember in Genesis chapter 1, how did God create?

    Genesis 1 chapter mention

  66. Do you remember that?

  67. How did God create?

  68. He spoke, didn't he?

  69. Catechism says God spoke all things into being by the word of his power in the space of six days and all very good.

  70. He speaks and says, let there be light.

  71. And there was light.

  72. And so we discover that the word of God is God acting in creation.

  73. And now here in the new creation, God is acting again, isn't he?

  74. That is the significance of Jesus being called the word.

  75. The word is God in action.

  76. God bringing the world into being by his word.

  77. And here in Christ, God is bringing in a new world.

  78. A new age.

  79. God is bringing a new humanity into being.

  80. As he sends his son forth from the heavens.

  81. And so John is preparing you and I for the fact that in Christ's coming,

  82. God is beginning to do something of majestic proportions.

  83. And that is what we need to grasp.

  84. That the baby in the manger is the living God acting in his world.

  85. There's the same dynamic in that little baby.

  86. As when God called out into the darkness.

  87. And commanded light to come forth.

  88. That when he spoke and created the universe.

  89. That same authority.

  90. That same creation power.

  91. Is there in this tiny little baby.

  92. That's what John is saying to us.

  93. It's a very remarkable thing.

  94. That as the only begotten son was the agent of creation.

  95. Verse 3.

  96. All things were made through him.

  97. And without him was not anything made that was made.

  98. So the only begotten son.

  99. Is the agent of the creation.

  100. But of the new creation too.

  101. It is he who invades this fallen world.

  102. And gives life and light and hope.

  103. And this Jesus is the baby in the manger.

  104. Now do you notice how John describes Christ as the word.

  105. There's kind of four areas that he does that.

  106. He describes him.

  107. First of all in relation to time.

  108. And then in relation to God.

  109. And then in relation to the universe.

  110. And then in relation to humanity.

  111. So can you see first of all.

  112. He describes the word in relation to time.

  113. In the beginning.

  114. Was the word.

  115. He is eternal.

  116. That's the significance of this phrase.

  117. John is saying.

  118. That he had no beginning.

  119. While other forms and other things had a beginning.

  120. The son of God was eternal.

  121. The word was eternal.

  122. When time began.

  123. Christ was there.

  124. For all eternity.

  125. And John is emphasizing.

  126. That the baby born in Bethlehem.

  127. Had existed with the father.

  128. Through all eternity.

  129. So this beginning of days.

  130. In Bethlehem.

  131. Was not the beginning of days for him.

  132. He was.

  133. When the beginning came.

  134. And from all eternity.

  135. He had existed.

  136. With the father.

  137. So his relationship to time.

  138. Is he is eternal.

  139. And that's really important.

  140. Because only God is eternal.

  141. Do you remember the catechism again?

  142. What is God?

  143. God is infinite.

  144. Eternal.

  145. This baby in Bethlehem.

  146. Has the very characteristic.

  147. Has the very attributes.

  148. Of the Godhead.

  149. Here is the eternal son.

  150. The eternal word.

  151. But secondly.

  152. He describes the word in relationship to the Godhead.

  153. So can you see verse one again?

  154. In the beginning was the word.

  155. And the word was with God.

  156. And the word was God.

  157. God.

  158. Notice.

  159. The two things he says there.

  160. It's not only that he was in the beginning.

  161. And the word was God.

  162. But the word was with God.

  163. And that demonstrates to us.

  164. That the word.

  165. The son.

  166. The Christ.

  167. He has a separate entity.

  168. A separate personality.

  169. Within the Godhead.

  170. He was with God.

  171. God.

  172. But you must understand that.

  173. He was a kind of percentage of God.

  174. Or part of God.

  175. He is a separate personality.

  176. Within the Godhead.

  177. He is distinct from the Father.

  178. And yet he is one with the Father.

  179. So God the Son is a distinct person.

  180. A distinct being.

  181. Yet he has all the attributes.

  182. And all the essence of the Godhead.

  183. The word was God.

  184. What does that do to our worship this Christmas?

  185. Well it means we won't patronize him.

  186. It means we won't lullabies him.

  187. That it is God in the manger.

  188. And so we will bow down before him.

  189. And that is the significance of Christmas.

  190. Here in the manger.

  191. It is the eternal God himself.

  192. Co-equal with the Father.

  193. Having come down to be man.

  194. Third way he describes.

  195. The word is he talks about him in relation to the universe.

  196. Doesn't he?

  197. Look at verse 3.

  198. All things were made through him.

  199. And without him was not anything made that was made.

  200. Again.

  201. You've got the language.

  202. All the way through.

  203. In verse 3, 4 and 5.

  204. The language of Genesis 1.

  205. The language of God.

  206. The language of God.

  207. The language of God.

  208. The language of beginning.

  209. The language of made.

  210. The language of life.

  211. And light.

  212. And darkness.

  213. And so on.

  214. And so now he who was the creator of the universe.

  215. Has come.

  216. To be creator again.

  217. In his own world.

  218. To recreate.

  219. And reform.

  220. Men and women.

  221. Into the image of God.

  222. Who have turned from him.

  223. In.

  224. Rebellion.

  225. and so in relationship to the universe

  226. he is its creator

  227. do you grasp that?

  228. Lo within a manger lies

  229. he who built the starry skies

  230. must lead us to worship

  231. in ecstasy isn't it?

  232. that God the creator of the ends of the earth

  233. is a babe in a manger

  234. fourthly in relation to men

  235. look he is the life giver

  236. look at verse 4

  237. in him was life

  238. and the life was the light of men

  239. so John is telling us something here

  240. which is mind bending

  241. he's telling us that Christ is not only the creator

  242. the agent of creation at the beginning

  243. but he's the animator

  244. he's the way that life came through to us

  245. that where there was life

  246. life came through Christ

  247. and so God called didn't he

  248. inanimate creation

  249. into being

  250. God formed mountains

  251. and seas

  252. and dry land

  253. but then he brought life

  254. and where did that life come from?

  255. that life came from the Lord Jesus

  256. it came from Christ

  257. in him was life

  258. the simple fact is this

  259. there is no life outside of Jesus Christ

  260. that applies to physical life as well as spiritual life

  261. it may well be that John's concentration in his gospel

  262. is on spiritual life

  263. but physical life is exactly the same

  264. it is in Christ

  265. and so if you have life this morning

  266. if you are alive this morning

  267. some of you don't look like you're alive

  268. but you have life this morning

  269. because it has come through the Lord Jesus

  270. he is the animator of creation

  271. that's not a very good way of putting it

  272. the glorious truth is that John is

  273. undoubtedly using a double meaning

  274. that not only is life kind of vested in Christ

  275. in its general form

  276. but the basic meaning of life in John's gospel

  277. is spiritual life

  278. and that is found in Christ

  279. so in the deepest sense

  280. the fullest sense

  281. the life that is in him

  282. is eternal life

  283. and in giving himself to us

  284. he gives us life

  285. and that life illumines the hearts of men

  286. in him was life

  287. and the life was the light of men

  288. the light shines in the darkness

  289. and the darkness has not overcome it

  290. you see what John is saying

  291. just in his opening words

  292. he's saying whichever direction you look at

  293. the baby in the manger is God

  294. the eternal creating animating Lord of life

  295. the baby in the manger is God

  296. but then he goes on to tell us

  297. that the baby in the manger is God made man

  298. the climax is in verse 14

  299. the word became flesh

  300. the word that was in the beginning

  301. the word that was God

  302. who was with God

  303. the word who created all things

  304. became flesh

  305. and he dwelt among us

  306. full of grace

  307. and full of truth

  308. in 9 to 11

  309. it's kind of trailed there

  310. we're told that

  311. the true light

  312. which gives light to everyone

  313. was coming into the world

  314. that's the world of Bethlehem

  315. in verse 10

  316. we're told that he was

  317. in the world

  318. and the world was made through him

  319. yet the world did not know him

  320. verse 11

  321. he came to his own

  322. and his people did not receive him

  323. but the baby in the manger

  324. is God made man

  325. is taught in verse 14

  326. most clearly

  327. and this is the mystery

  328. of the new creation

  329. that is in Christ

  330. and so in the first creation

  331. in Genesis 1

  332. God made man

  333. to bear his image

  334. in the second creation

  335. God became man

  336. to bear our sin

  337. in the first creation

  338. God made man

  339. to bear his image

  340. in the second creation

  341. God became man

  342. to bear our sin

  343. when he says

  344. that the word became flesh

  345. he was no less God

  346. when he became flesh

  347. our Lord Jesus Christ

  348. didn't lessen his godness

  349. he was not therefore

  350. God minus something

  351. he was God

  352. together with what

  353. he had made

  354. taking on our humanity

  355. so that he who

  356. had made man

  357. now came to experience

  358. what it was like

  359. to be a man

  360. that's what the incarnation

  361. means

  362. it means that

  363. the Lord Jesus

  364. took on our flesh

  365. it means that

  366. he entered

  367. into fully

  368. what it means

  369. to be human

  370. he experienced

  371. our frailty

  372. he understood

  373. our weakness

  374. he wept

  375. with our tears

  376. he was exhausted

  377. with our tiredness

  378. he came under pressure

  379. like you and I do

  380. he experienced

  381. temptation

  382. from Satan

  383. like we do

  384. he was tested

  385. and tempted

  386. in every point

  387. as we are

  388. he was a baby boy

  389. and then

  390. an adolescent

  391. and then a full grown

  392. man

  393. and at every stage

  394. he became

  395. what he was

  396. for our sakes

  397. so that he might

  398. enter into our

  399. humanity

  400. and this is what

  401. the incarnation

  402. means

  403. it means that

  404. the Lord of glory

  405. has taken on

  406. human flesh

  407. there's not an

  408. iota

  409. of your

  410. experience

  411. which the Lord

  412. Jesus has not

  413. entered into

  414. personally

  415. and that's what

  416. constitutes him

  417. as a saviour

  418. who understands

  419. the needs

  420. of his people

  421. the Lord Jesus

  422. has entered

  423. into every

  424. possible area

  425. of your flesh

  426. in order that

  427. he might be

  428. your saviour

  429. literally

  430. what John

  431. says there

  432. it says that

  433. he tabernacled

  434. amongst us

  435. can you see that

  436. he dwelt

  437. amongst us

  438. he was made

  439. flesh

  440. and dwelt

  441. among us

  442. verse 14

  443. and there's no

  444. doubt a reference

  445. there isn't there

  446. to the end of

  447. Exodus

  448. where the

  449. tabernacle is

  450. set up

  451. right at the

  452. heart of the

  453. camp of Israel

  454. in the midst

  455. of God's

  456. people

  457. and in Exodus

  458. 40

  459. when the

  460. tabernacle

  461. is established

  462. we're told

  463. that the glory

  464. of God

  465. it so filled

  466. the tabernacle

  467. that Moses

  468. couldn't enter it

  469. he couldn't get

  470. near it

  471. because the

  472. glory of God

  473. filled the

  474. tabernacle

  475. God came

  476. down and

  477. filled his

  478. tabernacle

  479. with glory

  480. and it

  481. burned out

  482. from the

  483. tabernacle

  484. now do you

  485. see what Jesus

  486. is doing here

  487. he is coming

  488. amongst us

  489. making

  490. his flesh

  491. his tabernacle

  492. in order that

  493. out of his

  494. flesh

  495. something of

  496. the glory

  497. of God

  498. would burn

  499. and shine

  500. and that is

  501. ultimately the

  502. end of his

  503. saving ministry

  504. the Lord

  505. Jesus

  506. enters into

  507. our flesh

  508. in order that

  509. our manhood

  510. and our

  511. womanhood

  512. would be a

  513. tabernacle

  514. for his

  515. glory to

  516. shine

  517. we beheld

  518. his glory

  519. we've seen

  520. his glory

  521. glory as

  522. of the

  523. only

  524. son

  525. from the

  526. father

  527. full of

  528. grace

  529. and truth

  530. you might

  531. remember the

  532. transfiguration

  533. where his

  534. glory

  535. bursts forth

  536. on that

  537. mountain

  538. and suddenly

  539. the veil of

  540. the Lord

  541. Jesus

  542. is torn

  543. and suddenly

  544. the glory

  545. of who he

  546. is is seen

  547. on that

  548. mountain

  549. it couldn't

  550. be contained

  551. and Peter

  552. speaking about

  553. it years

  554. later

  555. he says

  556. we beheld

  557. his glory

  558. and Jesus

  559. says this

  560. the night

  561. before he

  562. dies

  563. he says

  564. to his

  565. father

  566. the glory

  567. you have

  568. given me

  569. I have

  570. given them

  571. the glory

  572. that you

  573. have given

  574. me

  575. I have

  576. given

  577. them

  578. and that

  579. glory

  580. he came

  581. to bear

  582. in order

  583. that

  584. we might

  585. know the

  586. very glory

  587. of God

  588. shining through

  589. our human

  590. flesh

  591. it's what the

  592. purpose of his

  593. grace and salvation

  594. ultimately is

  595. it's the glory

  596. ultimately of what

  597. the angels sing

  598. the Lord Jesus

  599. through human

  600. flesh that he

  601. has redeemed

  602. and sanctified

  603. the glory

  604. of Christmas

  605. is it is

  606. possible that

  607. through your

  608. flesh

  609. the glory

  610. of Christ

  611. might shine

  612. and God

  613. became man

  614. for that

  615. that leads me

  616. to the last

  617. of the three

  618. areas

  619. the baby

  620. in the manger

  621. is God

  622. the baby

  623. in the manger

  624. is God

  625. made man

  626. and the baby

  627. in the manger

  628. is God

  629. made man

  630. for our

  631. salvation

  632. here's

  633. here's the

  634. real issue

  635. did God

  636. the son

  637. the second

  638. person

  639. of the

  640. trinity

  641. why did

  642. he become

  643. come down

  644. to be made

  645. flesh for man

  646. well it was

  647. certainly to reveal

  648. the glory of God

  649. to reveal his

  650. grace and his

  651. truth in the

  652. world

  653. but it was to

  654. deal with

  655. wasn't it

  656. two specific

  657. areas

  658. where his

  659. glory had been

  660. obscured

  661. and challenged

  662. first of all

  663. in the area

  664. of death

  665. in the world

  666. and then the

  667. area of darkness

  668. in the world

  669. so think again

  670. of Genesis 1

  671. think of that

  672. first creation

  673. account

  674. when God

  675. spoke into

  676. the first

  677. creation

  678. do you remember

  679. what it says

  680. there was

  681. darkness

  682. over the face

  683. of the earth

  684. and that

  685. darkness

  686. there was

  687. evidence

  688. wasn't it

  689. evidence

  690. of the need

  691. for light

  692. and life

  693. and God

  694. spoke into

  695. that darkness

  696. and there

  697. was light

  698. it was waiting

  699. for God

  700. to say

  701. let there be

  702. light

  703. but here

  704. the darkness

  705. in John 1

  706. is sinister

  707. it is an

  708. evil darkness

  709. the new

  710. element in

  711. that darkness

  712. is death

  713. and men

  714. loved darkness

  715. rather than

  716. light we're told

  717. because their

  718. deeds were evil

  719. and that is why

  720. Christ has come

  721. into the world

  722. he came to

  723. give life

  724. in him

  725. was life

  726. says John

  727. and that life

  728. is eternal life

  729. spiritual life

  730. because there

  731. was spiritual

  732. death in man

  733. and the

  734. fallen world

  735. is the shadow

  736. of death

  737. over it

  738. and Christ

  739. came in our

  740. flesh

  741. in order

  742. that he might

  743. deal with the

  744. ultimate darkness

  745. it's what John

  746. means when he

  747. says in verse 9

  748. he says the true

  749. light which gives

  750. light to everyone

  751. who's coming to

  752. the world

  753. he was in the

  754. world and the

  755. world was made

  756. through him

  757. yet the world

  758. did not know

  759. him

  760. he came to

  761. his own

  762. and his own

  763. people did not

  764. receive him

  765. so in John 1

  766. you've got the

  767. first mystery

  768. which is the

  769. incarnation

  770. haven't you

  771. this mind

  772. bending truth

  773. that God

  774. has become man

  775. but the second

  776. mystery of John 1

  777. is the rejection

  778. of Christ

  779. the mystery of

  780. the rejection

  781. of the son

  782. of God

  783. because he

  784. came for those

  785. who were in

  786. darkness

  787. and he came

  788. to bring light

  789. but they didn't

  790. want it

  791. they were blinded

  792. to him

  793. he came to

  794. his home

  795. he came to

  796. his own

  797. people

  798. but his own

  799. people would

  800. not receive

  801. him

  802. he was

  803. despised

  804. and rejected

  805. by those

  806. he came

  807. for

  808. what did

  809. he come to

  810. do

  811. John tells

  812. us in

  813. verses 12

  814. and 13

  815. but to

  816. all who

  817. did receive

  818. him

  819. who believed

  820. in his name

  821. he gave the

  822. right to

  823. become children

  824. of God

  825. who were

  826. born not

  827. of blood

  828. nor of the

  829. will of the

  830. flesh

  831. nor of the

  832. will of God

  833. of man

  834. but of God

  835. he came

  836. to bring

  837. life

  838. to raise

  839. from spiritual

  840. death

  841. those without

  842. God and

  843. without hope

  844. but the

  845. Christ who

  846. became man

  847. who was in

  848. a tiny

  849. crib

  850. grew up to

  851. be the son

  852. of God

  853. crucified

  854. on a

  855. cross

  856. in order

  857. that by

  858. his death

  859. he might

  860. put an

  861. end to

  862. our

  863. spiritual

  864. death

  865. and raise

  866. us

  867. to spiritual

  868. life

  869. that's what's

  870. behind John's

  871. words to all

  872. who received

  873. him who

  874. believed in

  875. his name

  876. he gave

  877. power to

  878. become

  879. children of

  880. God

  881. how does

  882. he do

  883. that

  884. well he

  885. does that

  886. by offering

  887. himself

  888. death

  889. and that's

  890. what Christmas

  891. is about

  892. really isn't

  893. it

  894. he offers

  895. us his

  896. son

  897. to all

  898. who received

  899. him

  900. and it is in

  901. Christ that

  902. there is

  903. life

  904. and so dead

  905. sinners who

  906. sit in

  907. darkness

  908. need

  909. Christ

  910. and if

  911. Christmas

  912. for you

  913. is just

  914. some kind

  915. of nice

  916. warm

  917. fairy story

  918. you need

  919. Christ

  920. and to

  921. all who

  922. received

  923. him he

  924. gave

  925. the right

  926. to become

  927. children of

  928. God

  929. and so

  930. can I ask

  931. if you

  932. grasped that

  933. this Christmas

  934. that the

  935. eternal son

  936. of God

  937. the creator

  938. of the

  939. ends of

  940. the earth

  941. who has

  942. formed you

  943. who has

  944. made you

  945. offers himself

  946. to you

  947. he offers

  948. himself to

  949. you to

  950. come into

  951. your life

  952. and to

  953. recreate

  954. you

  955. what you

  956. need

  957. have you

  958. received

  959. him

  960. it's not

  961. enough to

  962. be religious

  963. it's not

  964. enough to

  965. align yourself

  966. with God's

  967. people

  968. it's not

  969. enough to

  970. have a

  971. reputation

  972. as a

  973. Christian

  974. it is

  975. have you

  976. received

  977. Jesus

  978. Christ

  979. because

  980. to as

  981. many as

  982. received

  983. him

  984. he gave

  985. the right

  986. to be

  987. children

  988. of God

  989. that you

  990. might be

  991. brought to

  992. him

  993. that you

  994. might discover

  995. the mystery

  996. and glory

  997. of having

  998. the creator

  999. of the

  1000. universe

  1001. inhabiting

  1002. your life

  1003. and making

  1004. it his

  1005. tabernacle

  1006. that was

  1007. true

  1008. you would

  1009. go out

  1010. of this

  1011. church

  1012. wouldn't

  1013. you

  1014. walking

  1015. on air

  1016. you would

  1017. rejoice

  1018. that the

  1019. word became

  1020. flesh

  1021. and dwelt

  1022. among us

  1023. let's pray

  1024. let's종

  1025. of

  1026. a
