  1. If you could turn to page 7 in the sheet that you were given, I'm going to speak from Matthew 2 and verses 1-12.

  2. ! And there's an abundance of sermon title puns from this chapter.

  3. So, Stars, Schemes and Dreams.

  4. Or you might have heard Wise Men Worship Jesus Still.

  5. Star Trek, to name a few.

  6. But I think there's no story of Jesus' birth that's been more distorted over the years.

  7. Let me try and prove my point with a quiz.

  8. You're not going to shout out. You can whisper your answers to the person next to you.

  9. But let me ask you some questions.

  10. How many wise men were there?

  11. What were their names?

  12. How did they get to Jerusalem? No shouting out.

  13. When did they arrive?

  14. What country were they from?

  15. And if you know the answers to those questions,

  16. you're probably more familiar with sentimental carols and tradition

  17. than with what the Bible says about them.

  18. Let me give you the answers to the quiz.

  19. We don't know how many wise men there were.

  20. There could have been three.

  21. There could have been ten. I'd quite like to think there were 500.

  22. We don't know that Casper, Melchior, Balthazar were their names.

  23. We don't know their names.

  24. We don't know how they got there.

  25. There's no mention of camels.

  26. I think we can safely rule out one on a bus, one on a car, one on a scooter.

  27. The belongings to two.

  28. They didn't arrive at Christmas night.

  29. They went to a house.

  30. And not a stable.

  31. And all we know about them is that they're from the east.

  32. And so Matthew, who wrote this gospel, is very short on Christmas trimmings.

  33. There's no stable.

  34. There's no shepherds.

  35. It's a very plain account.

  36. But he's very, very clear on who and why we're celebrating tonight.

  37. In the last verse of Matthew chapter 1, we're told Jesus was born.

    Matthew 1 chapter mention

  38. And in verse 2 of chapter 2, it tells us that we celebrate the birth of God's king.

  39. Jesus, and not the wise men, however many there were, is the hero of the story.

  40. Two points for you tonight.

  41. First of all, the contrast of the kings, and then the contrast of the responses.

  42. So look at verses 1 and 2 on page 7.

  43. Can you do that?

  44. Look down with me.

  45. After Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea, during the time of King Herod,

  46. Magi from the east came to Jerusalem and asked,

  47. Where is the one who has been born king of the Jews?

  48. We saw his star in the east, and we've come to worship him.

  49. When you put them together, you don't have to be very astute, do you,

  50. to realise that there's two kings.

  51. There's King Herod, verse 1, and then there's the king of the Jews.

  52. That's not an editorial coincidence.

  53. It is a deliberate statement.

  54. Herod was the man-made king.

  55. Jesus is the God-born king.

  56. Let's look at that contrast.

  57. Herod, he's half Jew, he's half Edomite.

  58. But Herod, the man-made king, he was appointed king by the Roman Senate about 40 BC.

  59. You can look him up in history.

  60. King Herod was an outsider.

  61. In fact, he was a vicious outsider.

  62. He killed his mother.

  63. He killed his favourite wife.

  64. And so you wonder what happened to the least favourite.

  65. He killed at least three of his sons.

  66. His reign is characterised by paranoia.

  67. He was always vulnerable to a king rising up, to a true Israelite.

  68. King Herod had sleepless nights about a king from the true Davidic dynasty.

  69. That somebody would come from King David's line.

  70. Think of that situation today, where there's a royal line.

  71. But now there's someone else on the throne.

  72. And of course, that someone else would be vulnerable.

  73. Herod hears the news he's been dreading for decades.

  74. There's another king.

  75. A king of the Jews.

  76. Jesus, well, he's got the credentials.

  77. If you go back to right at the start of Matthew's Gospel,

  78. the very first verse says,

  79. Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham.

  80. It's telling you right from the start,

  81. Jesus is definitely in the royal line.

  82. And so you see Herod, the man appointed king,

  83. is terrified.

  84. Can you see in verse 2,

  85. this baby has been born king.

  86. He's not born to be king.

  87. He's in the royal line.

  88. And he's born in the right place.

  89. He's born in the little town of Bethlehem.

  90. And that quote that we're given there in verse 6,

  91. is from the Old Testament.

  92. It's from the Old Testament prophet Micah.

  93. This king has been born in the right place.

  94. He's geographically authentic.

  95. So what we're being told in Matthew 2,

  96. is in the words of the carol,

  97. the hopes and fears of all the years

  98. are met indeed tonight.

  99. The promised one of the Old Testament,

  100. God's long promised king, has arrived.

  101. And incredibly, Herod gets that.

  102. There's more contrast.

  103. What kind of king will Jesus be?

  104. Will he be like King Herod, the tyrant?

  105. And the contrast is not only in their origin,

  106. but in the nature of their kingship.

  107. I think tragically,

  108. sometimes people can look at Christianity

  109. and think that Jesus is a tyrant

  110. telling you what you can and can't do.

  111. That Jesus makes demands on your time,

  112. your money.

  113. He tells you who you can sleep with

  114. and who you can't sleep with.

  115. But if you look at verse 6,

  116. just over the page, on page 8,

  117. look what it says about this king.

  118. For out of you will come a ruler

  119. who will be a shepherd of my people.

  120. And that idea of a king who's also a shepherd

  121. is throughout the Old Testament.

  122. I think Matthew is drawing here

  123. from when King David was crowned king of Israel.

  124. And we're told in 1 Samuel 5 verse 2,

    1 Samuel 5:2

  125. you shall shepherd my people Israel

  126. and you shall become their ruler.

  127. Here is the king in David's line,

  128. but he's the king in fulfillment to David.

  129. He is the king, but he's also a shepherd.

  130. He rules.

  131. But how does he rule?

  132. He rules as a caring shepherd.

  133. What does a good shepherd do?

  134. A good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.

  135. Do you remember Herod?

  136. He is the one who will kill to keep his throne.

  137. But Jesus is the one who will die

  138. because he's on the throne.

  139. You see, Herod was troubled

  140. when he heard the news of the king of the Jews

  141. and all Jews slim with them.

  142. They sensed a threat.

  143. They knew of Herod's paranoia.

  144. He'd killed his mother, his wife,

  145. at least two of his sons.

  146. They had good reason to fear.

  147. But in chapter 2 in verse...

  148. Chapter 2, we're told that he will be a shepherd.

  149. There's a joke at the time

  150. when this was written,

  151. which spoke that it was a rhyme in the original,

  152. that it was safer to be Herod's pig

  153. than Herod's son.

  154. This man killed for his throne.

  155. But the one the wise men wanted to see

  156. will die,

  157. not because he is forced off his throne,

  158. but he will die for his people.

  159. He will give his life

  160. for the sheep.

  161. Matthew tells us that at his birth

  162. and at his death,

  163. he's given a title, isn't he?

  164. The king of the Jews.

  165. And so there's a choice for the wise men.

  166. As there is a choice for each one of us tonight.

  167. There's the pomp and the rank

  168. and the visible power

  169. of the Herods of this world.

  170. Or there's the seeming weakness

  171. and vulnerability

  172. and near invisibility

  173. of God's king.

  174. And the Magi, they chose wisely.

  175. Well, we know, don't we,

  176. from 2,000 years,

  177. Herod is dead and gone, isn't he?

  178. Herod was an important man,

  179. a very important man,

  180. but his kingdom was small.

  181. And even in his time,

  182. Herod was not the most important person

  183. in the world.

  184. As far as I'm aware,

  185. there is nobody

  186. who is worshipping Herod tonight.

  187. As far as I'm aware,

  188. there is nobody

  189. that will celebrate Herod's birthday.

  190. Nobody says,

  191. I follow Herod's rule.

  192. But the king of the Jews

  193. born that night

  194. is a universal

  195. and everlasting king.

  196. There's a clue to that.

  197. Where are the Magi from?

  198. The Magi are from the east,

  199. aren't they?

  200. They are not Jewish.

  201. If you go back to the Old Testament,

  202. you will see that

  203. there's this promise

  204. again and again and again

  205. that God's king

  206. will be a universal king

  207. for all people

  208. and for all time.

  209. Psalm 72 says this,

  210. it was like the national anthem

  211. for the people of Israel.

  212. May he,

  213. that's God's king,

  214. have dominion from sea to sea,

  215. from rivers

  216. to the ends of the earth.

  217. May the kings of Tarshish

  218. and of the coastlands

  219. render him tribute.

  220. May the kings of Sheba

  221. and Sheba bring him gifts.

  222. May all kings

  223. fall down before him

  224. and all nations serve him.

  225. Blessed be his glorious name forever.

  226. May the whole earth

  227. be filled with his glory.

  228. What Matthew is telling you,

  229. that what Israel looked for

  230. and prayed for

  231. is beginning to happen.

  232. We are seeing in miniature

  233. in Matthew chapter 2

    Matthew 2 chapter mention

  234. that the king of the Jews

  235. is actually the king of the nations.

  236. The promise is given

  237. in the Old Testament

  238. that God is going to bless

  239. all the nations

  240. is here being fulfilled.

  241. The nations are coming

  242. to Jesus.

  243. An international mighty king

  244. who will rule over his people

  245. forever.

  246. And so here in Matthew 2

  247. is the beginning of many nations

  248. coming to Jesus.

  249. Millions upon millions

  250. upon millions

  251. have since done that.

  252. People like me

  253. who are not Jewish

  254. who have been cut

  255. into the story.

  256. And Matthew

  257. at the end of his book

  258. says exactly the same thing.

  259. He says,

  260. go into all the world

  261. and tell people

  262. about this universal

  263. and everlasting king.

  264. You see,

  265. Matthew 2

  266. is telling you

  267. that the baby

  268. or the toddler

  269. as he is in Matthew 2

  270. is God's king

  271. and so get on your knees

  272. and worship him.

  273. And if this is the start

  274. of God's plan

  275. what will it be like

  276. when Jesus comes back?

  277. We're told,

  278. do you know what will happen then?

  279. The Bible says

  280. when Jesus comes back

  281. every knee will bow

  282. whether you've bowed

  283. the knee before or not.

  284. Mohammed's knee will bow.

  285. Piers Morgan's knee will bow.

  286. The Dalai Lama will bow his knee.

  287. Rishi Sunak,

  288. Joe Biden,

  289. Donald Trump,

  290. they will bow their knee

  291. before King Jesus.

  292. You

  293. will bow your knee.

  294. And will you bow your knee now

  295. or will you bow your knee then?

  296. And if I was you

  297. I would make sure

  298. I bow my knee now

  299. and worship the universal king.

  300. The contrast of the kings.

  301. But secondly

  302. the contrast of responses.

  303. He's the universal king

  304. but that doesn't mean

  305. that he's universally acclaimed

  306. and welcomed.

  307. There are different responses

  308. aren't there?

  309. I think there are three.

  310. Firstly there's the Magi.

  311. We don't know anything about them

  312. apart from this passage.

  313. What did they know?

  314. But it seems they must have known

  315. some of the Jewish scriptures

  316. to be looking for the king of the Jews.

  317. It's absolutely remarkable isn't it?

  318. They see the star

  319. and they trek.

  320. They trek to Jerusalem

  321. where they expected the child to be born.

  322. That's where you'd expect the child to be born

  323. in the capital city.

  324. And then they go on to Bethlehem

  325. where they're told to.

  326. And they give Jesus gifts.

  327. Some have put special emphasis on the gifts.

  328. Some have said it's gold for a king,

  329. frankincense for a prophet,

  330. myrrh for a priest.

  331. I'm not completely sure about that.

  332. But the gifts that they gave

  333. were of great value.

  334. And you have to wonder

  335. that they went so far

  336. with so little to go on.

  337. They eagerly arrive at Jerusalem.

  338. And they talk with Herod.

  339. And Herod is troubled.

  340. He is so troubled

  341. that he gets the theologians in.

  342. The religious guys.

  343. And they know

  344. where the king of the Jews

  345. is going to be born.

  346. They know that Bethlehem

  347. is the birthplace

  348. of the promised king.

  349. But they can't be bothered

  350. to go there themselves.

  351. The wise men,

  352. they have so little

  353. to go on.

  354. But the chief priests

  355. and the teachers of the law,

  356. they have so much,

  357. but they're not going to stir.

  358. And Matthew again

  359. is deliberately contrasting

  360. for you.

  361. He is showing you

  362. the eagerness of the Magi

  363. to worship Jesus.

  364. Despite their limited knowledge.

  365. And he contrasts it

  366. with the apathy

  367. of the Jewish leaders.

  368. Apathy isn't new.

  369. What does apathy mean?

  370. I don't care, you say.

  371. It means, isn't it?

  372. You can't be bothered.

  373. It's really frightening, isn't it?

  374. That some of us

  375. can know our Bibles

  376. and you can be really familiar

  377. with the story of Christmas

  378. like many of us are.

  379. But that doesn't necessarily

  380. lead to knowing

  381. and loving Jesus.

  382. If the chief priests

  383. and the teachers of the law

  384. were around today,

  385. they'd be church leaders.

  386. Incredibly well read,

  387. incredibly sophisticated.

  388. They'd be the religious

  389. establishment.

  390. But they still

  391. wouldn't know

  392. and love Jesus.

  393. You see, for the Magi,

  394. no trouble is too great

  395. for them.

  396. For the Pharisees

  397. and the religious leaders,

  398. they cannot be bothered.

  399. And their apathy

  400. in the end

  401. led to opposition.

  402. Herod's devious plan

  403. shows he's against Jesus

  404. right from the off, isn't it?

  405. He's threatened by him.

  406. And so even at his birth,

  407. can you see,

  408. Jesus is dividing people

  409. into two camps

  410. just like he's dividing

  411. us into two camps.

  412. Those who are for him

  413. and those who are against him.

  414. What's the result

  415. of these three responses?

  416. Well, verse 10,

  417. for the Magi,

  418. they saw the star

  419. and they're overjoyed.

  420. And they come to the house,

  421. they see the child

  422. with his mother Mary,

  423. they bow down

  424. and they worship him.

  425. They open up their treasures,

  426. they present him

  427. with gifts of gold

  428. and frankincense

  429. and myrrh.

  430. Can you just see

  431. the response?

  432. They came

  433. and they worshipped Jesus.

  434. What did they experience?

  435. They experienced

  436. great joy.

  437. Exceedingly

  438. great

  439. joy.

  440. I wonder

  441. whether you know

  442. anything of that.

  443. That is

  444. real

  445. Christianity.

  446. That is

  447. the reason

  448. we as a church exist.

  449. That is

  450. what we're inviting you

  451. into tonight.

  452. Real

  453. exceeding

  454. joy.

  455. How will you

  456. react

  457. to King Jesus?

  458. Will you

  459. search for him?

  460. Will you

  461. look for him?

  462. Will you

  463. read about him?

  464. Come back

  465. on a Sunday

  466. and find out

  467. more about him.

  468. It's really

  469. why we're so excited

  470. about this course

  471. Hope Explored.

  472. It's going to run

  473. on three Wednesdays

  474. in January.

  475. Wednesday the 10th

  476. and the 17th

  477. and the 24th.

  478. And it's an opportunity

  479. for you to hear

  480. more about Jesus

  481. and hear

  482. more about what

  483. he claims

  484. and to hear more

  485. about that

  486. exceedingly great

  487. joy that he

  488. offers you.

  489. Come with your

  490. questions.

  491. Come with your

  492. concerns.

  493. Come with your

  494. doubts.

  495. You'd be really

  496. really welcome.

  497. Three Wednesdays

  498. in January.

  499. will you

  500. be a fool

  501. and not

  502. bother

  503. ignore him

  504. maybe

  505. think he's

  506. unimportant

  507. maybe

  508. box him up

  509. with the other

  510. Christmas decorations

  511. get him out again

  512. next year.

  513. That is a tragic

  514. mistake.

  515. I beg you

  516. don't do it.

  517. Or will you

  518. recognise

  519. that the baby

  520. born in

  521. Bethlehem

  522. is God's

  523. King

  524. whom God

  525. has sent

  526. into this

  527. world

  528. to bring you

  529. exceedingly

  530. great

  531. joy.

  532. Let's bow

  533. before him

  534. now and let's

  535. pray.

  536. pray.
