    Luke 2 chapter mention

  3. And then there are those parents who think that their children are out of this world.

  4. And they think that their children can sing better than Beyonce.

  5. They think that their children can play better than Messi.

  6. And I guess for some parents, maybe for all of us, to some degree we live out our hopes and dreams through our children.

  7. You couldn't do it, but you think maybe with a bit of encouragement they can.

  8. But let's push it.

  9. When push comes to shove, there is only one set of parents who could actually say without a shadow of doubt that their child, their kid was out of this world, literally.

  10. At Jesus Christ, who came from heaven itself.

  11. And at the birth of any child, there's usually a huge amount of fuss, isn't there?

  12. Camera, presence, videos, phone calls.

  13. But at the birth of Jesus, the angel of the Lord turns up and makes this massive announcement to shepherds.

  14. As he'd already done to Elizabeth and Mary.

  15. Look at chapter 2 and verse 10.

  16. The angel says this.

  17. Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people.

  18. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a saviour who is Christ the Lord.

  19. God wants the shepherds to know.

  20. He wants you to know this Christmas day that this child born in Bethlehem is good news.

  21. It's always good news, isn't it, when a child is born.

  22. We've had a number of babies born this year in church life.

  23. It's always a joy to get that text message, to get that phone call.

  24. But this is uniquely good news.

  25. The kind of good news that the word literally was only used at the birth of an emperor.

  26. It's good news because the waiting is over.

  27. Some of you children, you've been waiting, haven't you, for Christmas to come.

  28. There's been a countdown.

  29. But Israel had been waiting.

  30. Today, finally.

  31. Today, on that first Christmas day.

  32. Today, today in the town of David, a saviour has been born to you.

  33. And at that moment in history, 2,000 years ago for us,

  34. the long-awaited saviour had finally arrived.

  35. He'd been a long time coming.

  36. The Bible is 66 books.

  37. It's not a collection of proverbs and myths and nice sayings.

  38. It's an unfolding story that starts with creation and finishes with the new creation.

  39. The message of the Bible is basically God made this world.

  40. We broke it.

  41. Jesus fixes it.

  42. And that's the storyline of the Bible.

  43. But scattered right through the Bible are promises.

  44. And so, for example, 2,000 years ago, before the Christmas day, the first Christmas day,

  45. God had said to Abraham,

  46. Through you a son will come,

  47. and your seed will bless the whole of the world.

  48. That was 2,000 years before the first Christmas.

  49. 1,000 years before the first Christmas,

  50. God had said to King David in 2 Samuel 7,

  51. That from you will come a king,

  52. and his kingdom will never end,

  53. and he'll be on the throne forever.

  54. And death will be no more.

  55. Then 500 years before the first Christmas,

  56. the prophet Micah

  57. said when that king comes,

  58. he's going to be born in one place,

  59. and one place only,

  60. and that place will be a place called Bethlehem.

  61. The waiting has been long.

  62. Some of us have got long journeys ahead of us this week

  63. to visit family,

  64. and you will hear little cries from the back,

  65. won't you?

  66. Are we there yet?

  67. When are we going to get there?

  68. And that's the cry of the Old Testament.

  69. Are we there yet?

  70. When are we going to get there?

  71. They knew that God's king would come.

  72. He would come,

  73. and he would fix this world.

  74. This world that has gone wrong.

  75. He would deal with my problems,

  76. and forgive my sins.

  77. They just didn't know when.

  78. And then we're told,

  79. Can you see it?

  80. Luke chapter 2, verse 11.

    Luke 2:11

  81. And to you this day,

  82. in the town of David,

  83. a saviour has been born to you.

  84. And I know it's old news for us, isn't it?

  85. That's not new news for you this morning.

  86. It's not old news.

  87. It's old news for us,

  88. but it's still good news.

  89. Let me tell you why it's good news.

  90. Let me break it up.

  91. It's good news because he is a saviour.

  92. And I tell you,

  93. we need to be saved as much today

  94. as we ever have.

  95. We need to be forgiven today

  96. as much as we ever have.

  97. You've got to know this.

  98. You've got to know this today,

  99. that there is nothing that you have done

  100. that cannot be forgiven by Jesus Christ.

  101. Let me say that again.

  102. There is nothing that you have done

  103. that cannot be forgiven you this morning

  104. if you receive Jesus Christ.

  105. Because today

  106. is born this day in the city of David

  107. a saviour.

  108. And it's good news,

  109. not only that he's a saviour,

  110. but he is God's king.

  111. Somebody who is in charge of this crazy world.

  112. Do you remember last Christmas?

  113. Last Christmas,

  114. we just survived, didn't we?

  115. This kind of

  116. next flood of COVID

  117. that they thought was going to come through.

  118. And we thought, didn't we,

  119. we'd come out of the pandemic

  120. and it would be happy times again.

  121. Life returning back to normal.

  122. But this year,

  123. we've seen an international crisis.

  124. War in Ukraine.

  125. Global fallout.

  126. Three prime ministers.

  127. Political instability.

  128. The death of the queen.

  129. And England yet again

  130. losing the France

  131. in the World Cup.

  132. A cost of living crisis.

  133. Climate anxiety

  134. after record heat waves.

  135. Do you remember them?

  136. But the message of Christmas Day

  137. is that this world

  138. is not going to stay as it is.

  139. So much grief,

  140. and yet that grief will be dealt with.

  141. And you need to know

  142. that God is coming back

  143. to take charge of this world.

  144. A world that has thumbed its nose

  145. at him.

  146. And it begins

  147. on this day in Bethlehem

  148. with the birth of his son.

  149. The son of the most high God.

  150. God has come to make himself known.

  151. And he's come

  152. with the express purpose

  153. that you would have

  154. a relationship with him,

  155. but on his terms.

  156. But notice how God

  157. fulfills his promise.

  158. Every Bible

  159. believing Israelite

  160. knew that God's

  161. appointed king

  162. had to be born in Bethlehem.

  163. But how does it happen?

  164. A couple

  165. called Mary and Joseph

  166. who are betrothed to be married

  167. are living in Nazareth.

  168. But they end up giving birth

  169. 80 miles away

  170. in Bethlehem.

  171. Remember there's

  172. no public transport

  173. much like today.

  174. There are no cars,

  175. no motorbikes,

  176. no scooters,

  177. just a donkey

  178. and walking.

  179. And it's not as if

  180. Joseph is reading

  181. Micah one day

  182. and thinks,

  183. flip Mary,

  184. we better get to

  185. Bethlehem.

  186. You need to have

  187. the baby there.

  188. That's not how it happened.

  189. Look at chapter 2

  190. and verse 1.

  191. Look at the larger canvas.

  192. In those days

  193. the decree went out

  194. from Caesar Augustus

  195. the emperor

  196. that all the world

  197. should be registered.

  198. That there should be

  199. a census.

  200. So first of all

  201. God says

  202. 500 years before

  203. Jesus is born

  204. when God's king comes

  205. he will be born

  206. in Bethlehem.

  207. The month before

  208. he's born

  209. or six months

  210. before he's born

  211. God works in the heart

  212. of the emperor

  213. Caesar Augustus

  214. in Rome.

  215. 2,000 kilometers

  216. away from

  217. Bethlehem

  218. and gets him

  219. to do a census.

  220. It affects the whole

  221. of the Roman Empire

  222. and on the edge

  223. of that Roman Empire

  224. a young couple

  225. Joseph and Mary

  226. who are originally

  227. from Bethlehem

  228. have got to go back

  229. to their hometown

  230. and register.

  231. Also this amazing

  232. prophecy could be

  233. fulfilled.

  234. So God promised

  235. 500 years before

  236. God works in the heart

  237. of an emperor

  238. to organize a census

  239. and God brings

  240. a teenage couple

  241. from Nazareth

  242. so that in her

  243. final trimester

  244. she is there

  245. and she gives birth

  246. to fulfill

  247. God's prophecy.

  248. So God is a God

  249. who makes promises

  250. and keeps them.

  251. The Bible is not

  252. a story of myths.

  253. We're not in the realm

  254. of Star Trek

  255. a long, long time

  256. ago in Bethlehem

  257. in a Bethlehem

  258. far, far away.

  259. No, you're dealing

  260. with fact.

  261. You're dealing

  262. with promises

  263. made by God

  264. in one period

  265. of history

  266. and fulfilled

  267. in another.

  268. You can be assured.

  269. And so let's not

  270. miss the phrase.

  271. Look with me

  272. at chapter 2

  273. verse 11 again.

  274. For unto you

  275. Isn't that a funny phrase?

  276. Unto you

  277. Born to you

  278. Is born this day

  279. in the city of David

  280. a saviour

  281. who is Christ the Lord.

  282. Born to do you good.

  283. Martin Luther

  284. the German reformer

  285. he said this

  286. he said

  287. why is it

  288. when I go into the garden

  289. all the birds

  290. fly away from me

  291. as if I mean

  292. to do them harm.

  293. Why do they do that?

  294. He said

  295. I've not come

  296. to do them harm

  297. but I go into the garden

  298. and the birds

  299. fly away from me.

  300. You know what that's like.

  301. If you've got

  302. an air rifle

  303. it's fair enough

  304. isn't it?

  305. The birds scatter.

  306. But this one

  307. born on Christmas day

  308. who came to save

  309. not condemn you

  310. why is it

  311. when I go into the garden

  312. all the birds fly away

  313. do I mean to do them harm?

  314. Why do they do that?

  315. Why is it

  316. that when I mention

  317. Jesus

  318. the name of Jesus

  319. my friends

  320. they want to change

  321. the subject

  322. as if Jesus

  323. means them harm.

  324. Could it be right now

  325. as I begin to speak to you

  326. about the Lord Jesus

  327. you find yourself

  328. intentionally distracted.

  329. I'm not going to think

  330. about that you say.

  331. I'm not going to allow

  332. myself to go there.

  333. Maybe you're thinking

  334. I'm too ashamed.

  335. I don't think

  336. I can be safe

  337. with him.

  338. Maybe you think

  339. as I talk about

  340. the Lord Jesus

  341. to you

  342. you think

  343. I know

  344. that I can't

  345. be forgiven

  346. you don't know

  347. what I've done.

  348. Could it be

  349. that you're so upset

  350. with God

  351. that there's

  352. an empty space

  353. at the family table

  354. and you're angry

  355. with him

  356. and you're blaming God?

  357. Could it be

  358. that you're kind of afraid

  359. that if you put your trust

  360. in this wonderful saviour

  361. that he'll ask

  362. to be lord of your life

  363. and to be in charge

  364. and you will lose rights

  365. over your life?

  366. Or maybe you're thinking

  367. I just don't want

  368. to be disappointed again

  369. because it really is

  370. a broken world

  371. and there's so much

  372. over promising

  373. in our world

  374. and under delivering.

  375. I quite like the film

  376. The Incredibles

  377. do you know the film

  378. The Incredibles?

  379. It's a good film

  380. as that.

  381. And at the beginning

  382. of the film

  383. the main character

  384. who's imaginatively

  385. called Mr. Incredible

  386. he's going from

  387. one scene

  388. to another

  389. saving and rescuing people.

  390. He's saving

  391. this person

  392. and that person.

  393. And this is what

  394. Mr. Incredible says

  395. right at the start

  396. of the film

  397. he says

  398. you just rescue one

  399. and then there's another

  400. it's never ending.

  401. No matter how many times

  402. you've saved the world

  403. it always manages

  404. to get back

  405. in jeopardy again.

  406. Sometimes I just

  407. want it to stay

  408. saved.

  409. You know just

  410. for a little bit

  411. I feel like the maid

  412. I just cleaned up

  413. this mess

  414. can you not keep it

  415. clean for ten minutes?

  416. And I think he captures

  417. what we want

  418. this world to be

  419. we want this world

  420. just to be saved

  421. for ten minutes

  422. or so

  423. just to be alright.

  424. and you don't have

  425. to think about

  426. the whole world

  427. you just have to

  428. think about

  429. your world

  430. for a minute.

  431. That everything

  432. just seems so right

  433. doesn't it?

  434. And then it goes wrong.

  435. I don't know what

  436. your Christmas morning

  437. has been like

  438. maybe it's been

  439. the picture perfect

  440. Christmas morning

  441. but I promise you

  442. it won't stay like that.

  443. And God's word

  444. comes to you

  445. this morning

  446. and God says

  447. I've not simply

  448. come to save you

  449. but to save this universe.

  450. He's come to put

  451. right

  452. the beginning

  453. of the story

  454. is little you

  455. but the end

  456. of the story

  457. is the beginning

  458. of a whole new world.

  459. A new creation

  460. where there's no more

  461. pain or crying

  462. or grief

  463. and that's God's agenda

  464. with you in it

  465. if only you would

  466. take his hand.

  467. And because it's

  468. good news

  469. it always comes

  470. with great joy.

  471. Whenever you meet

  472. the angels

  473. meet the shepherds

  474. the angels

  475. scare the living

  476. daylights

  477. out of the shepherds.

  478. And the first thing

  479. the angel says

  480. is do not be afraid

  481. and then

  482. he talks to them

  483. about the Lord Jesus

  484. and the response

  485. is always great joy.

  486. I don't know

  487. when you were born

  488. when you were born

  489. there was probably

  490. a great deal

  491. of fuss made

  492. about you

  493. loads of photographs.

  494. Particularly

  495. if you're child number one

  496. many child number one

  497. if you're child number one

  498. there's loads of photographs

  499. aren't there?

  500. I was child number four.

  501. You're lucky

  502. if you can find

  503. four, ten baby photos.

  504. But when you were born

  505. I can tell you

  506. what didn't happen.

  507. Verse 13

  508. didn't happen.

  509. In my house

  510. especially

  511. mum and dad

  512. think you are.

  513. And suddenly

  514. there was an angel

  515. and a multitude

  516. of the heavenly hosts

  517. praising God

  518. and saying glory

  519. to God in the highest

  520. and on earth

  521. peace among those

  522. with whom he is pleased.

  523. A whole army

  524. of angels

  525. burst onto the scene.

  526. And what I love

  527. is this

  528. what is good for us

  529. peace on earth

  530. is good for God

  531. glory to God.

  532. One is

  533. not at the expense

  534. of the other

  535. our God

  536. is a very pro-human God

  537. and to glorify him

  538. is to do good to people.

  539. And to do good to people

  540. is to glorify him.

  541. And when

  542. you were born

  543. the angels

  544. didn't cry out

  545. about that.

  546. I'm sorry.

  547. There's no

  548. recording

  549. in the Bible

  550. of angels

  551. rejoicing

  552. at my birth

  553. or yours.

  554. But what the Bible

  555. says is this

  556. when you are born again

  557. then the angels

  558. kick into gear.

  559. Jesus says that

  560. in Luke 15

  561. he says

  562. I tell you

  563. there is joy

  564. before the angels

  565. of God

  566. over one sinner

  567. who repents.

  568. And since Jesus

  569. who was born

  570. on that first Christmas day

  571. is the saviour of the world

  572. we need to trust him

  573. that's the call.

  574. And since Jesus

  575. who was born

  576. on the first Christmas day

  577. is Lord and King

  578. we need to obey him.

  579. And when you do that

  580. as many of you have

  581. as Jesus becomes

  582. your Lord

  583. and your saviour

  584. the Bible deems you

  585. to be born again.

  586. Because nothing more

  587. than a fresh start

  588. has happened.

  589. And when that happens

  590. the angels in heaven

  591. rejoice

  592. and your heart

  593. is filled with joy.

  594. And Peter says

  595. 1 Peter 1.8

  596. we are filled

  597. with an inexpressible

  598. and glorious joy.

  599. A joy so wonderful

  600. we can't put it into words.

  601. I think one of the dangers

  602. on a day like this

  603. is that you confuse

  604. happiness and joy.

  605. If you've not been born again

  606. by God's Spirit

  607. you've not known this joy.

  608. If you've not accepted

  609. Jesus as your Lord

  610. and saviour

  611. you will know of happiness.

  612. Yes.

  613. That's a human experience

  614. but you will not yet know

  615. of joy.

  616. Because joy is

  617. the single

  618. unique

  619. Christian emotion.

  620. Let me give you

  621. a definition

  622. as I round up.

  623. A deep

  624. profound

  625. experience

  626. of thankfulness

  627. at the certainty

  628. of being saved

  629. by Jesus

  630. from hell.

  631. That's where joy

  632. springs from.

  633. a deep

  634. and profound

  635. experience

  636. of thankfulness

  637. at the certainty

  638. of being rescued

  639. by Jesus

  640. from hell.

  641. And unless

  642. you have

  643. the Lord Jesus

  644. you can't have

  645. that joy.

  646. In fact

  647. you can't get it

  648. any other way.

  649. So that means

  650. you can be depressed

  651. this morning

  652. but you can have

  653. that joy.

  654. Members of this church

  655. struggle

  656. with anxiety

  657. and depression

  658. like everyone else.

  659. People in this church

  660. go up

  661. and down.

  662. Sometimes it feels

  663. like an up and down

  664. club.

  665. And I need to be

  666. really careful

  667. this morning

  668. that I don't

  669. over promise.

  670. I'm not promising you

  671. in the gospel

  672. permanent

  673. 24-7 happiness.

  674. But what I am

  675. saying to you

  676. is that in the highs

  677. and lows

  678. of life

  679. there is

  680. this joy.

  681. this deep

  682. profound

  683. experience

  684. of thankfulness

  685. at being

  686. rescued

  687. by Jesus

  688. from hell.

  689. And there is

  690. no greater joy

  691. than that.

  692. When the

  693. saviour comes

  694. praise

  695. and thankfulness

  696. follow

  697. verse 20

  698. the shepherds

  699. turn up

  700. and confirm

  701. everything

  702. the angel

  703. says

  704. when they

  705. meet baby

  706. Jesus

  707. and Mary

  708. and Joseph.

  709. We're told

  710. that the

  711. shepherds

  712. returned

  713. glorifying

  714. and praising

  715. God

  716. for all

  717. they'd

  718. heard

  719. and seen

  720. as it

  721. had been

  722. told

  723. them

  724. back to

  725. our

  726. verse

  727. I bring

  728. you

  729. good

  730. news

  731. of

  732. great

  733. joy

  734. that

  735. will

  736. be

  737. for

  738. all

  739. people

  740. for unto

  741. you

  742. is born

  743. this day

  744. in the

  745. city

  746. of David

  747. a saviour

  748. for all

  749. people.

  750. In this

  751. church

  752. there are

  753. about

  754. 40 nationalities

  755. and people

  756. have come

  757. to Jesus

  758. from very

  759. different

  760. backgrounds

  761. at very

  762. different

  763. stages

  764. of life.

  765. People

  766. who've

  767. been

  768. broken

  769. others

  770. who've

  771. not been

  772. particularly

  773. broken.

  774. they've

  775. just been

  776. persuaded

  777. by the

  778. facts

  779. of

  780. Jesus.

  781. People

  782. have come

  783. when they're

  784. happy

  785. and they've

  786. come when

  787. they're sad.

  788. Some people

  789. have come

  790. when they're

  791. doing really

  792. well in

  793. business

  794. some have

  795. come when

  796. they're

  797. flat broke.

  798. People

  799. have come

  800. when they're

  801. healthy

  802. and fit

  803. and others

  804. when they're

  805. unhealthy

  806. and sick.

  807. And all

  808. have found

  809. themselves

  810. worshipping

  811. this Jesus.

  812. And when

  813. Mary and

  814. Joseph went

  815. to Bethlehem

  816. there was

  817. no room

  818. was there

  819. in that

  820. guest house

  821. for Jesus.

  822. And I

  823. wonder this

  824. morning if

  825. there is

  826. room for

  827. Jesus in

  828. that heart

  829. of yours.

  830. There's a

  831. big difference

  832. isn't there

  833. between singing

  834. about Jesus

  835. as the

  836. saviour of

  837. the world

  838. that would

  839. be just

  840. another

  841. Christmas.

  842. And useless

  843. to you

  844. unless you

  845. understand that

  846. Jesus is

  847. my saviour

  848. and my

  849. Lord.

  850. Galatians

  851. 2.20 is

  852. one of my

  853. favourite

  854. verses.

  855. It says

  856. this.

  857. Let me read

  858. it to you.

  859. The life

  860. I live

  861. I now

  862. live in

  863. the flesh

  864. I live

  865. by faith

  866. in the

  867. son of

  868. God

  869. who

  870. loved

  871. me

  872. and

  873. gave

  874. himself

  875. for

  876. me.

  877. You see

  878. the truth

  879. is

  880. this morning

  881. there is

  882. nothing

  883. that you

  884. have done

  885. that can't

  886. be forgiven.

  887. God so

  888. loved the

  889. world

  890. that's

  891. wonderful

  892. but God

  893. so loved

  894. me

  895. that's

  896. unbelievable.

  897. Have you

  898. done that?

  899. Have you

  900. made Jesus

  901. your saviour

  902. and your

  903. Lord

  904. that you

  905. may know

  906. the joy

  907. of his

  908. forgiveness

  909. that you

  910. may know

  911. the joy

  912. of God

  913. God being

  914. your father

  915. and of heaven

  916. being your

  917. home.

  918. let's

  919. pray.

  920. Let's

  921. pray.

  922. Let's

  923. pray.

  924. Let's

  925. pray.

  926. Let's
