  1. Turn to Hebrews chapter 12 and verses 1-2. I suppose I wanted to preach a New Year sermon.

    Hebrews 12 chapter mention

  2. ! These verses would be great verses to learn, wouldn't they, for you and I. Hebrews 12 and verses 1-2.

  3. ! I'm going to begin a series next week in the book of Philippians, and so maybe you want to read that this week.

  4. But today, Philippians chapter 12 and verses 1-2. Some of you are very young, aren't you? Some of you are very old, aren't you?

  5. Some of you are very old. And I expect children, you look around you, and some of you will look around and you'll think,

  6. these people are ancient, aren't they? These people are ancient.

  7. I want to speak, really, this morning on how do you keep going? How do you keep going as a Christian when you're very young and when you're very old?

  8. The theme, the big word is perseverance. That's the big word. How do you persevere? How can I keep on going?

  9. I expect some of you are sitting here this morning, you've got through Christmas, you're exhausted,

  10. and the thought of a new year doesn't actually fill you with great joy. You think, how can I keep on going?

  11. Maybe you've got many worries, anxieties about life on this coming year.

  12. And there are many things that are needed to live and to serve God in our world,

  13. but it seems to me that none of them are more vital

  14. or more neglected by the church than this big theme of perseverance.

  15. In a way, it's the theme of the whole of the letter of Hebrews.

  16. The letter of the Hebrews is written to a group of Christians

  17. who are living in days which were pretty dangerous for them spiritually.

  18. And the danger of drifting,

  19. spiritually drifting, was an ever-present danger. In fact, there's two dangers.

  20. One of the dangers is drifting away,

  21. and the other danger is shrinking back.

  22. Let me show you that.

  23. If you come with me to Hebrews chapter 2 and verse 1,

    Hebrews 2 chapter mention

  24. the apostle makes it really clear.

  25. He says this in Hebrews chapter 2 verse 1,

    Hebrews 2:1

  26. Therefore you must pay, we must pay close attention

  27. to what we've heard lest we drift away from it.

  28. And that seems to be a drifting,

  29. which is just careless or neglect.

  30. Maybe they weren't applying themselves to the truth of what God had said.

  31. And so in chapter 2 and verse 3,

  32. you get this question where it says,

  33. and this is written to the church, to Christians,

  34. how shall we escape if we neglect such a great salvation?

  35. And it was this drifting that caused neglect.

  36. You know what that is.

  37. When you go on holiday in the summer,

  38. and you go away for a week or two,

  39. and you leave your garden,

  40. when your garden,

  41. when you come back after a week or two away in the summertime,

  42. your garden isn't exactly like how you left it, is it?

  43. Because it's been neglected.

  44. You didn't do anything with it,

  45. and yet it has grown.

  46. It is overgrown.

  47. Drifting.

  48. Drifting.

  49. And neglect.

  50. The other danger is in chapter 10 and verse 32.

  51. Can you see that?

  52. He says to them,

  53. recall the former days when after you were enlightened,

  54. you endured,

  55. and here it is,

  56. a hard struggle with sufferings.

  57. Sometimes you were publicly exposed to reproach and affliction,

  58. sometimes being partners with those so treated.

  59. For you had compassion on those in prison,

  60. and you joyfully accepted the plundering of your property,

  61. since you knew that you yourselves had a better possession and an abiding one.

  62. Therefore,

  63. do not throw away your confidence,

  64. which is a great reward.

  65. For you have need of endurance,

  66. perseverance,

  67. so that when you've done the will of God,

  68. you may receive what is promised for yet a little while.

  69. And the coming one will come and will not delay,

  70. but my righteous one shall live by faith,

  71. and if he shrinks back,

  72. my soul has no pleasure in him.

  73. But we are not those who shrink back and are destroyed,

  74. but of those who have faith and preserve their souls.

  75. So the appeal is keep on going.

  76. Now can you imagine at the end of chapter 10,

  77. these Hebrew Christians,

  78. they've been weakened by suffering.

  79. They've lived in pretty discouraging times,

  80. pretty desperate situations.

  81. And they're saying,

  82. is this perseverance really possible?

  83. Can I really keep going?

  84. Is it really feasible for somebody who is ordinary and weak and frail like me,

  85. to go on believing and trusting in the Lord?

  86. My circumstances are dark and difficult and troubling.

  87. Is it practical for me?

  88. And the writer says,

  89. well,

  90. it's certainly historical,

  91. and so chapter 11 is the story of people who lived by faith in God.

  92. Look what it says in chapter 8,

  93. by faith,

  94. Abraham obeyed when he was called out to go to a place that he was to receive as an inheritance,

  95. and he went out not knowing where he was going.

  96. He believed God.

  97. He took his only son,

  98. and he laid him on an altar by faith,

  99. and he offered him up.

  100. By faith,

  101. Moses,

  102. can you see him?

  103. Verse 23,

  104. when he was born,

  105. was hidden for three months by his parents.

  106. And when he was grown up,

  107. verse 24,

  108. he refused to be called the son of Pharaoh's daughter,

  109. choosing rather to be mistreated with the people of God,

  110. than to enjoy the fleeting pleasures of sin.

  111. He considered the reproach of Israel of greater wealth than the treasures of Egypt.

  112. And we're given this catalogue of men and women,

  113. who in circumstances of appalling difficulty,

  114. believed God and kept going.

  115. I haven't got time to go through the chapter.

  116. But it's a catalogue of one person after another,

  117. who kept on going.

  118. And that's what the apostle calls us to.

  119. He imagines life as a race.

  120. And he says,

  121. you're on the track in the Christian life,

  122. not for a sprint,

  123. not for 400 meters,

  124. but for the marathon.

  125. And he says,

  126. persevere,

  127. keep going.

  128. There's nothing more urgent than this.

  129. And maybe our world finds this kind of perseverance strange.

  130. But we need to cry to God at the start of this year,

  131. that he would form in us,

  132. and make in our Christian character,

  133. such that we would persevere.

  134. You find it all through the Bible.

  135. You find it in the teaching of Jesus.

  136. You find it in the teaching of John.

  137. You find it in the teaching of the apostle Paul.

  138. So Jesus said this,

  139. John 8, 31.

  140. He said,

  141. if you continue in my word,

  142. then you are my disciples.

  143. Colossians 1, 22 and 23,

  144. the apostle speaks about presenting us before the throne of God,

  145. provided that you continue in the faith,

  146. stable and steadfast,

  147. not shifting from the hope of the gospel.

  148. The apostle John speaks of some who've left us.

  149. If they'd been with us,

  150. they would have continued with us.

  151. And so there's this constant plea in the New Testament.

  152. The apostle Paul in Acts 13,

  153. he persuaded them to continue in the grace of God.

  154. 2 Timothy 3, verse 14,

    2 Timothy 3:14

  155. he says to his apprentice Timothy,

  156. continue in the things you've heard.

  157. Now these two verses of Hebrews 12 are full of that.

  158. So let's look at them under four headings.

  159. First of all,

  160. the need for perseverance.

  161. The need for perseverance.

  162. Why is it such a vital quality

  163. that God calls us to seek from him?

  164. It derives from the very nature of the Christian life.

  165. And the word persevere gives us a clue.

  166. It's often set against the background

  167. of a military metaphor.

  168. So it's used to continue the fight,

  169. the battle,

  170. until the very end.

  171. Not to desert the field.

  172. Not to run away.

  173. Because the enemy seems so great.

  174. Don't give up your post.

  175. But go on battling

  176. until victory.

  177. That's one picture.

  178. The military picture.

  179. The second picture is

  180. that of an athletic one.

  181. It's of a race of staying the course.

  182. Of not dropping out.

  183. Of not falling behind,

  184. but staying the course.

  185. And the apostles are using

  186. that particular picture here.

  187. But you also find the military one

  188. in chapter 11,

  189. where the apostle speaks

  190. about the kind of perseverance.

  191. He says in chapter 11

  192. and verses 33 to 34,

  193. he speaks for all these different people

  194. who through faith,

  195. chapter 11 verse 33,

  196. conquered kingdoms,

  197. enforced justice,

  198. obtained promises,

  199. stopped the mouths of lions,

  200. quenched the power of fire,

  201. escaped the edge of the sword,

  202. were made strong out of weakness,

  203. became mighty in war,

  204. put foreign armies to flight.

  205. That's the military context,

  206. isn't it?

  207. And so in both of these,

  208. Paul finds himself,

  209. or the apostle,

  210. the epistle finds himself

  211. talking of the Christian life

  212. as a race and as a battle.

  213. He puts them together,

  214. doesn't he?

  215. So think about 2 Timothy,

  216. when he speaks about

  217. the end of the Christian life,

  218. what does he say?

  219. He says,

  220. I fought the good fight,

  221. I finished the race.

  222. And so what I'm trying to say to you

  223. is this,

  224. the Christian life,

  225. as it's painted in the New Testament,

  226. is painted as a race

  227. and a fight.

  228. It is nowhere depicted as a holiday

  229. or a journey

  230. through this world

  231. that is free from danger

  232. and free from disaster.

  233. The Christian life is nowhere depicted

  234. as floating to heaven

  235. on kind of fluffy clouds

  236. and beds of ease.

  237. The Christian life is described

  238. as a war

  239. and as a race.

  240. And a Christian has to give everything

  241. and to discipline herself

  242. and to prepare himself.

  243. And the Christian has to spend

  244. all her energies

  245. in this business

  246. because it's hard,

  247. isn't it?

  248. It's hard to fight

  249. the good fight

  250. and run the race.

  251. The endurance of hardship

  252. and of trial.

  253. The pressures

  254. which the apostle speaks

  255. of a thousand different kinds.

  256. Now, none of us

  257. would want to hide

  258. from any young Christian

  259. what it's like to be a Christian.

  260. None of us would want to hide

  261. the sheer, indescribable joy

  262. there is in serving God.

  263. None of us would want

  264. to dial down

  265. the sheer, indescribable glory

  266. of what it means

  267. to belong to the Lord Jesus Christ.

  268. To know God as your Father.

  269. To have the Lord Jesus Christ

  270. as your elder brother.

  271. To have the Holy Spirit

  272. within you.

  273. We wouldn't want to downplay that.

  274. We wouldn't want to downplay

  275. the sheer, indescribable joy

  276. of knowing forgiveness of sins,

  277. your conscience cleansed,

  278. your past dealt with,

  279. your future secure.

  280. of knowing that you are

  281. an inheritor

  282. of the riches of his grace.

  283. But we also don't want

  284. to hide the fact

  285. that the Christian life

  286. is a deadly conflict

  287. with the most bitter of enemies.

  288. That we're engaged

  289. in a marathon.

  290. That we're not in a little sprint

  291. that takes a little bit

  292. of energy

  293. but we have to go on

  294. and on

  295. and on

  296. and on

  297. and on.

  298. And there are occasions

  299. aren't there

  300. when the Church of Jesus Christ

  301. most needs people

  302. who are just willing

  303. to keep on

  304. keeping on.

  305. Think of Christopher Columbus.

  306. You know the guy

  307. who discovered America?

  308. He talks about his diary

  309. doesn't he?

  310. Where he's just sailing

  311. and sailing

  312. and sailing

  313. and sailing

  314. and sailing.

  315. Sailing on.

  316. That was his diary.

  317. Day after day

  318. after day.

  319. Sailing on,

  320. sailing on,

  321. sailing on.

  322. But there was a moment

  323. wasn't there

  324. where he caught sight of land.

  325. There was a moment

  326. when he discovered

  327. a whole new world.

  328. And for those

  329. in the Christian life

  330. who keep on

  331. and keep on

  332. and keep on

  333. and keep on

  334. and keep on

  335. there will be a day.

  336. There will be a day

  337. when you will discover

  338. a whole new world.

  339. To your joy

  340. you will discover

  341. the God

  342. who will bring you

  343. into a new world.

  344. The truth is though

  345. until that time

  346. you will discover

  347. also an enemy

  348. who will use

  349. every means

  350. to harass you

  351. in the Christian life

  352. and to divert you

  353. from the great business

  354. of running the Christian life.

  355. And so

  356. to some

  357. the apostle says

  358. doesn't he

  359. you ran well

  360. but what has hindered you?

  361. What has diverted you?

  362. WP Nicholson said

  363. if Satan cannot

  364. keep you

  365. from being converted

  366. he will do

  367. all he can

  368. to get you

  369. diverted.

  370. Quite good isn't it?

  371. And the devil

  372. will divert you

  373. by all sorts of means.

  374. Taking your eye

  375. away from

  376. the finishing post.

  377. Getting you involved

  378. in a whole lot

  379. of things

  380. that will actually

  381. just slow you down

  382. and drag you back

  383. and blow you

  384. off course.

  385. So there is this

  386. need for perseverance.

  387. But secondly

  388. there's the encouragement

  389. to perseverance.

  390. Can you see the

  391. beautiful balance

  392. in the verse?

  393. There's this really

  394. severe need

  395. isn't there

  396. for perseverance.

  397. and yet there's

  398. glorious encouragement.

  399. Therefore since we

  400. are surrounded

  401. by so great

  402. a cloud of witnesses

  403. let us lay aside

  404. every weight

  405. and sin

  406. which clings so closely

  407. and let us run

  408. with perseverance

  409. endurance

  410. the race that is set

  411. before us.

  412. So can you see

  413. the picture?

  414. The difficulty

  415. of perseverance

  416. the encouragement

  417. of the witnesses.

  418. The picture is

  419. think of one of those

  420. great amphitheaters

  421. think of a great stadium.

  422. rising ranks

  423. of people

  424. watching the runners.

  425. Tier advantage points.

  426. And those tiers

  427. are full of spectators

  428. who are bearing

  429. witness to something.

  430. That's the important thing.

  431. They are bearing

  432. witness to someone.

  433. They bear witness.

  434. The real point

  435. of verse 1

  436. therefore since we

  437. are surrounded by

  438. so great

  439. a cloud of witnesses

  440. is not that the believers

  441. are in heaven this morning

  442. cheering us on.

  443. That isn't the point.

  444. They're not sadly.

  445. And they're not

  446. standing around

  447. watching us

  448. admiring what we're doing.

  449. Isn't Paul Levy

  450. doing so well this week?

  451. That's not the main point.

  452. That's not the big point.

  453. But the big point

  454. Paul the apostle

  455. who we don't know

  456. who wrote Hebrews

  457. is that the big point

  458. is

  459. is we need to listen

  460. to what these witnesses

  461. are testifying.

  462. What are these witnesses

  463. in Hebrews chapter 11

    Hebrews 11 chapter mention

  464. that he's just named?

  465. What are they saying

  466. to us

  467. in the crowd?

  468. Well think about it.

  469. How did they manage

  470. to go on?

  471. How did Abraham

  472. keep on course?

  473. How did Moses

  474. go through

  475. all those trials

  476. and pressures

  477. that he experienced

  478. in leading

  479. those difficult people

  480. Israel

  481. out of Egypt?

  482. Was it because

  483. they had some

  484. great personal qualities?

  485. Was it because

  486. Sarah had some

  487. wonderful characteristics?

  488. No it wasn't was it?

  489. It was because

  490. of the faithfulness

  491. of God.

  492. We're told that

  493. he endured

  494. Moses

  495. he endured

  496. as seeing him

  497. who is invisible.

  498. And that is what

  499. all these great clouds

  500. of witnesses

  501. bear witness to.

  502. That is the great

  503. encouragement

  504. to persevere.

  505. And incidentally

  506. that is why

  507. we should be people

  508. who are interested

  509. in history.

  510. It should be the

  511. history of Christ's

  512. church.

  513. The biblical use

  514. of history

  515. is not to point

  516. us to the past

  517. and say

  518. oh they were

  519. great days

  520. weren't they?

  521. They were great

  522. days in the

  523. 16th, 17th

  524. and 18th century.

  525. That's not the

  526. biblical use of

  527. history.

  528. It's not wishing

  529. that you were

  530. living in the past

  531. oh that we were

  532. living in those

  533. days.

  534. No the biblical

  535. use of history

  536. is to say

  537. look what the

  538. living God

  539. did in those

  540. days and that

  541. God is the

  542. same God as

  543. today.

  544. And so where

  545. is the Lord

  546. God of Elijah?

  547. The answer is

  548. he is precisely

  549. here with us.

  550. He is the

  551. same God.

  552. God has not

  553. changed one

  554. iota.

  555. And there's

  556. not one thing

  557. that he did

  558. for those men

  559. and women in

  560. Hebrews chapter

    Hebrews 11 chapter mention

  561. 11 that he's

  562. unable to do

  563. for you.

  564. And you might

  565. be thinking

  566. well not me

  567. not for me

  568. other people

  569. here maybe

  570. but not for

  571. me.

  572. but the

  573. living God

  574. who took

  575. that geriatric

  576. Sarah

  577. and gave her

  578. a child

  579. the living

  580. God who

  581. took Abraham

  582. who brought

  583. the name of

  584. his God

  585. into disgrace

  586. when he went

  587. down into

  588. the land of

  589. Egypt.

  590. That God

  591. is able to

  592. take you

  593. and make

  594. you the

  595. kind of man

  596. or woman

  597. or boy

  598. or girl

  599. who will

  600. go on

  601. and on

  602. and on

  603. and on

  604. to the end.

  605. Encouragement

  606. to persevere.

  607. And so

  608. think about

  609. how does

  610. God introduce

  611. himself in

  612. the Bible

  613. often.

  614. He says

  615. I am the

  616. God of

  617. Abraham

  618. and I am

  619. the God

  620. of Isaac

  621. and I am

  622. the God

  623. of Jacob

  624. and I am

  625. the God

  626. who brought

  627. your fathers

  628. out of

  629. Egypt.

  630. He isn't

  631. simply giving

  632. them a history

  633. lesson is he?

  634. He is telling

  635. them this is

  636. my character.

  637. These are

  638. the qualities

  639. at the start

  640. of 2023

  641. that you

  642. ought to

  643. put your

  644. confidence in.

  645. This is

  646. the God

  647. you are

  648. to rest

  649. in

  650. and rest

  651. upon.

  652. Thirdly

  653. what about

  654. the preparation

  655. for perseverance?

  656. The preparation

  657. for perseverance

  658. there is a

  659. preparation

  660. so look at

  661. verse 1

  662. therefore

  663. since we

  664. are surrounded

  665. by so

  666. great a

  667. cloud of

  668. witnesses

  669. let us

  670. lay aside

  671. every weight

  672. and sin

  673. which clings

  674. so closely

  675. and let

  676. us run

  677. with endurance

  678. the race

  679. that is

  680. set before

  681. us.

  682. In your

  683. vision

  684. it will

  685. say throw

  686. off everything

  687. that hinders.

  688. The writer

  689. of the Hebrews

  690. is urging

  691. us

  692. and urging

  693. the readers

  694. to be serious

  695. about the race

  696. and he is

  697. only addressing

  698. those who are

  699. serious to

  700. throw off

  701. everything

  702. that would

  703. be an

  704. impediment

  705. in running

  706. it.

  707. And so

  708. one of the

  709. ways that

  710. people are

  711. hindered

  712. and prevented

  713. from persevering

  714. is just

  715. because they

  716. are weighed

  717. down with

  718. various kind

  719. of impediments.

  720. So can you

  721. see what the

  722. race is like?

  723. It's not like

  724. the school

  725. parents race

  726. at the

  727. school

  728. sports day.

  729. You know

  730. what that race

  731. is like isn't

  732. it?

  733. And people

  734. get there

  735. they've done

  736. no warming

  737. up

  738. and yet

  739. they really

  740. go for it

  741. don't they

  742. and there's

  743. hamstrings

  744. pulled

  745. and all

  746. sorts of

  747. things

  748. and people

  749. joking

  750. and laughing.

  751. It's not

  752. a fun run.

  753. The Christian

  754. race is not

  755. a fun run.

  756. It is what

  757. life is all

  758. about.

  759. And it's

  760. why we're

  761. here.

  762. The question

  763. is how

  764. serious

  765. am I?

  766. Think of

  767. the professional

  768. sportsman

  769. get up in

  770. the morning

  771. and they

  772. weigh themselves.

  773. They fill in

  774. a sleep

  775. chart of how

  776. they slept.

  777. They watch

  778. what they eat

  779. for breakfast.

  780. They train

  781. until they can

  782. train no more.

  783. They manage

  784. their load.

  785. They live

  786. don't they

  787. a really

  788. strange kind

  789. of life.

  790. And you say

  791. to them

  792. why on earth

  793. are you doing

  794. that?

  795. Why are you

  796. living like

  797. that?

  798. What's the

  799. point in

  800. doing that?

  801. And they

  802. would say

  803. to us

  804. it all

  805. depends how

  806. seriously

  807. you take

  808. the sport.

  809. Lots of

  810. people in

  811. churches ask

  812. the question

  813. is there

  814. any harm

  815. in dot

  816. dot?

  817. There's

  818. probably not

  819. any harm

  820. in that but

  821. it's not

  822. the right

  823. question.

  824. The question

  825. is this

  826. is how

  827. serious are

  828. we about

  829. the race?

  830. And in

  831. our culture

  832. we would

  833. say well

  834. you don't

  835. want to be

  836. too serious

  837. do you?

  838. I don't

  839. know about

  840. you but

  841. I have

  842. found that

  843. the man

  844. or woman

  845. who is

  846. most serious

  847. about God

  848. is often

  849. the most

  850. gentle

  851. and the

  852. most humorous

  853. and the

  854. kindest of

  855. people.

  856. And I've

  857. tragically found

  858. that the

  859. person who

  860. is a

  861. Christian but

  862. is not

  863. really serious

  864. about God

  865. often is

  866. the most

  867. unhappy

  868. most

  869. discontented.

  870. And that's

  871. because they've

  872. got the

  873. worst of

  874. both worlds.

  875. And so

  876. just look

  877. with me at

  878. chapter 12

  879. verse 1

  880. because it

  881. is a

  882. flabbergasting

  883. verse isn't

  884. it?

  885. Lay aside

  886. every weight.

  887. And let's

  888. go to the

  889. Olympic final

  890. 100 metres

  891. and you

  892. know they

  893. go along

  894. the thing

  895. and they

  896. I don't

  897. know

  898. who

  899. is

  900. runners

  901. now

  902. and they

  903. kind of

  904. interact

  905. one

  906. is

  907. dot dot dot

  908. and there

  909. you go

  910. the person

  911. waves at

  912. their crowd

  913. and they're

  914. from

  915. Dominican

  916. Republic

  917. you've

  918. got someone

  919. from Jamaica

  920. and then

  921. you come

  922. to somebody

  923. who's

  924. wearing

  925. a duffel

  926. coat

  927. and carrying

  928. two

  929. suitcases

  930. on the

  931. front

  932. on the

  933. start line

  934. of the

  935. 100 metres

  936. it would

  937. be ridiculous

  938. wouldn't it

  939. be so

  940. stupid

  941. a figure

  942. of

  943. stupidity

  944. is there

  945. anything

  946. stupid

  947. about

  948. an

  949. overcoat

  950. it's not

  951. is there

  952. there's nothing

  953. stupid

  954. about carrying

  955. suitcases

  956. that's

  957. really fine

  958. it's good

  959. to have

  960. a coat

  961. it's good

  962. to have

  963. suitcases

  964. but

  965. it's what

  966. he's professing

  967. to do

  968. makes it

  969. ridiculous

  970. and here's

  971. the point

  972. the apostle

  973. says

  974. the weights

  975. and the

  976. hindrances

  977. get rid

  978. of them

  979. and just

  980. notice

  981. can you see

  982. this

  983. I'm not

  984. sure I've

  985. seen this

  986. before

  987. but in

  988. verse 1

  989. there's a

  990. distinction

  991. between

  992. every weight

  993. and sin

  994. the weights

  995. are distinguished

  996. from

  997. sin

  998. there are

  999. things in

  1000. your life

  1001. and my life

  1002. that are

  1003. not sinful

  1004. and yet

  1005. they may be

  1006. a weight

  1007. that is

  1008. stopping us

  1009. from the

  1010. Christian

  1011. life

  1012. and yet

  1013. there are

  1014. things

  1015. which are

  1016. harmful

  1017. for all

  1018. people

  1019. all the

  1020. time

  1021. these things

  1022. cling about

  1023. us

  1024. and the

  1025. apostle Paul

  1026. says to you

  1027. think about

  1028. your life

  1029. this morning

  1030. at the

  1031. start of

  1032. 2023

  1033. and

  1034. disentangle

  1035. yourself

  1036. from the

  1037. things

  1038. that are

  1039. hindering

  1040. you

  1041. and drop

  1042. the sin

  1043. that is

  1044. stopping you

  1045. running

  1046. maybe a

  1047. phone

  1048. maybe an

  1049. app

  1050. maybe the

  1051. TV

  1052. maybe money

  1053. it may be

  1054. possessions

  1055. maybe a

  1056. relationship

  1057. that is

  1058. stopping you

  1059. from running

  1060. all out

  1061. maybe the

  1062. trap of

  1063. pornography

  1064. and Paul

  1065. speaks about

  1066. cutting

  1067. cutting away

  1068. in Romans

  1069. Paul speaks

  1070. about putting

  1071. things to death

  1072. he speaks

  1073. about being

  1074. radical

  1075. with certain

  1076. things in our

  1077. lives

  1078. being radical

  1079. with things

  1080. that will

  1081. stop us

  1082. running the

  1083. race

  1084. and keeping

  1085. on looking

  1086. at the

  1087. finished

  1088. post

  1089. don't

  1090. drift

  1091. preparation

  1092. for

  1093. perseverance

  1094. let us lay

  1095. aside every

  1096. weight and

  1097. the sin

  1098. that so

  1099. easily

  1100. entangles

  1101. and then

  1102. finally

  1103. let's

  1104. just see

  1105. the manner

  1106. in which

  1107. way to

  1108. persevere

  1109. look at

  1110. verse 2

  1111. why is it

  1112. worth it

  1113. looking to

  1114. Jesus

  1115. the founder

  1116. and perfecter

  1117. of our faith

  1118. who for the

  1119. joy that was

  1120. set before him

  1121. endured the

  1122. cross

  1123. despising

  1124. the shame

  1125. and is

  1126. seated

  1127. right now

  1128. at the

  1129. right hand

  1130. of the

  1131. throne

  1132. of God

  1133. and so

  1134. can you

  1135. notice

  1136. where our

  1137. eyes are

  1138. in the

  1139. race

  1140. our eyes

  1141. are not

  1142. primarily

  1143. on the

  1144. cloud of

  1145. witnesses

  1146. our eyes

  1147. are on

  1148. Jesus

  1149. and he

  1150. is the

  1151. author

  1152. he is the

  1153. founder

  1154. and the

  1155. finisher

  1156. of our

  1157. faith

  1158. and of

  1159. course

  1160. Jesus

  1161. is the

  1162. great

  1163. example

  1164. of

  1165. perseverance

  1166. isn't he

  1167. he is the

  1168. prototype

  1169. of perseverance

  1170. look what

  1171. he did

  1172. he endured

  1173. the cross

  1174. he despised

  1175. the shame

  1176. and is seated

  1177. at the right

  1178. hand of God

  1179. and so

  1180. if you think

  1181. of Jesus

  1182. life

  1183. they came

  1184. to him

  1185. again and

  1186. again and

  1187. again and

  1188. the devil

  1189. came to him

  1190. again and

  1191. again to

  1192. divert him

  1193. to try and

  1194. distract him

  1195. to try and

  1196. entangle him

  1197. and so

  1198. when Peter

  1199. says you are

  1200. the Christ

  1201. the son of the

  1202. living God

  1203. and then

  1204. immediately

  1205. Simon Peter

  1206. says this

  1207. way of

  1208. suffering that

  1209. you're talking

  1210. about Jesus

  1211. that isn't the

  1212. way of the

  1213. Messiah

  1214. that isn't

  1215. the way of

  1216. the Lord

  1217. and what

  1218. does Jesus

  1219. say to Peter

  1220. Jesus says

  1221. get behind

  1222. me Satan

  1223. because he

  1224. saw behind

  1225. Peter's

  1226. diversion

  1227. was the

  1228. devil

  1229. diverting his

  1230. eyes from

  1231. the glory of

  1232. the father

  1233. and as he

  1234. hung on the

  1235. cross you

  1236. remember what

  1237. they said to

  1238. him they

  1239. said come

  1240. down from

  1241. the cross

  1242. if you are

  1243. the Christ

  1244. but he

  1245. didn't listen

  1246. because he

  1247. persevered and

  1248. he endured

  1249. the cross

  1250. but of course

  1251. we don't look

  1252. to Jesus

  1253. primarily as

  1254. our example

  1255. we look to

  1256. him primarily

  1257. as our

  1258. eternal

  1259. sufficient

  1260. saviour

  1261. that he

  1262. is the

  1263. author and

  1264. the finisher

  1265. of the faith

  1266. what that

  1267. means is this

  1268. this is a

  1269. wonderful truth

  1270. the only reason

  1271. if you are

  1272. running the

  1273. Christian life

  1274. this morning

  1275. the only reason

  1276. if you are

  1277. in the race

  1278. this morning

  1279. is because

  1280. he's put

  1281. you there

  1282. it's only

  1283. by his

  1284. grace and

  1285. by his

  1286. mercy

  1287. that the

  1288. Lord Jesus

  1289. Christ has

  1290. made you

  1291. who were

  1292. dead in

  1293. your trespasses

  1294. and sins

  1295. and made

  1296. you alive

  1297. in Christ

  1298. so that

  1299. you can

  1300. run

  1301. and he's

  1302. given you

  1303. newness of

  1304. life and

  1305. he's put a

  1306. new heart

  1307. and a new

  1308. spirit within

  1309. you and a

  1310. new desire

  1311. for heaven

  1312. and the glory

  1313. of God

  1314. and he's put

  1315. you in that

  1316. race and he

  1317. is the author

  1318. of that race

  1319. he is the

  1320. alpha the

  1321. beginning of

  1322. that race

  1323. but notice

  1324. it also

  1325. says he

  1326. is the

  1327. finisher

  1328. because he

  1329. who began

  1330. a good

  1331. work in

  1332. you will

  1333. bring it

  1334. to completion

  1335. at the

  1336. day of

  1337. Jesus

  1338. Christ

  1339. and that

  1340. wonderfully

  1341. means that

  1342. if God

  1343. has begun

  1344. a work

  1345. in you

  1346. he will

  1347. complete it

  1348. and he

  1349. will finish

  1350. it

  1351. and so

  1352. the secret

  1353. to running

  1354. this race

  1355. is not

  1356. that I

  1357. have this

  1358. particular

  1359. quality in

  1360. my Christian

  1361. character

  1362. it is

  1363. primarily

  1364. that God

  1365. will

  1366. persevere

  1367. with me

  1368. he will

  1369. persevere

  1370. with me

  1371. to the

  1372. end

  1373. and he

  1374. calls you

  1375. and I

  1376. to persevere

  1377. because he

  1378. persevered

  1379. with us

  1380. to be the

  1381. author and

  1382. finisher of

  1383. our faith

  1384. and that is

  1385. the ground

  1386. on which we

  1387. rest

  1388. as we set

  1389. our eyes

  1390. on the

  1391. Lord Jesus

  1392. and we are

  1393. able to say

  1394. at the start

  1395. of this year

  1396. Lord take

  1397. me on

  1398. let nothing

  1399. divert me

  1400. and so

  1401. the great

  1402. business of

  1403. your life

  1404. and my

  1405. life

  1406. this year

  1407. is to go

  1408. on with the

  1409. Lord Jesus

  1410. Christ

  1411. and to keep

  1412. going on

  1413. and so

  1414. we say to

  1415. him today

  1416. don't we

  1417. let not

  1418. the sins

  1419. which cling

  1420. around me

  1421. help me

  1422. Lord to

  1423. put them

  1424. to death

  1425. give me

  1426. a new

  1427. heart

  1428. give me

  1429. a great

  1430. hope that

  1431. will delight

  1432. in you

  1433. that God

  1434. will go

  1435. on in

  1436. his work

  1437. with you

  1438. what he

  1439. has begun

  1440. he will

  1441. continue

  1442. he is

  1443. the author

  1444. and the

  1445. finisher

  1446. so we

  1447. know the

  1448. hymn

  1449. don't we

  1450. a debtor

  1451. to mercy

  1452. alone

  1453. the work

  1454. which his

  1455. goodness

  1456. began

  1457. the arm

  1458. of his

  1459. strength

  1460. will complete

  1461. his promise

  1462. is yea

  1463. Amen!

  1464. and never

  1465. was forfeited

  1466. yet

  1467. and so

  1468. that is

  1469. the hope

  1470. of the

  1471. child of

  1472. God

  1473. this

  1474. morning

  1475. as we

  1476. look to

  1477. the future

  1478. of this

  1479. year

  1480. and that

  1481. is why

  1482. when we

  1483. say keep

  1484. on

  1485. keeping

  1486. on

  1487. we are

  1488. assured

  1489. that there

  1490. is a

  1491. new world

  1492. that is

  1493. coming

  1494. and in

  1495. that world

  1496. this morning

  1497. there is a

  1498. forerunner

  1499. who has

  1500. entered

  1501. into it

  1502. before us

  1503. you think

  1504. of the

  1505. image

  1506. he has

  1507. put an

  1508. anchor

  1509. down

  1510. for our

  1511. souls

  1512. and it is

  1513. as it

  1514. were

  1515. he is

  1516. drawing

  1517. you in

  1518. and the

  1519. Christian life

  1520. is letting

  1521. him draw

  1522. you

  1523. and let

  1524. nothing

  1525. in earth

  1526. or in

  1527. hell

  1528. divert you

  1529. from it

  1530. and may

  1531. God make

  1532. us a

  1533. people

  1534. who will

  1535. persevere

  1536. to the end

  1537. let's pray

  1538. together
