  1. And let's turn in our Bibles to Matthew chapter 13 and verse 44 to 48.

    Matthew 13 chapter mention

  2. It reads,

  3. And he is so worth it.

  4. And there was this poor year-and-a-half-year-old, probably thinking, you know, what is wrong with Dad?

  5. He's gone mad.

  6. But it's true.

  7. Sometimes when we make costly decisions, we can wonder, was that worth it?

  8. And nowhere is that more true than in the Christian life.

  9. The devil and the world and the flesh, all of them will be saying, this is a waste of time.

  10. This is stupid.

  11. This is nuts.

  12. But Jesus has told this parable to teach us that simple truth.

  13. The truth that we need to hear, whether it's for the first time or the thousandth time.

  14. That knowing Jesus will cost you everything.

  15. That he is worth more than anything in the world.

  16. Those are my two points for this evening, and we'll work through them one by one.

  17. Firstly, knowing Jesus will cost you everything.

  18. It's one of the most obvious common features of these parables.

  19. Verse 44, it says,

  20. Then again in verse 46,

  21. Who, on finding one pearl of great value, went and sold all that he had.

  22. And the point is, if you want to know the one true God and Jesus Christ whom he has sent,

  23. they are the pearl, the treasure.

  24. There is a sense in which you must sell all too.

  25. Now that would be very obvious to us if we lived in somewhere like North Korea or Afghanistan.

  26. Where to put your faith in the Lord Jesus so very clearly might cost you.

  27. But here it might not be so obvious.

  28. After all, many people live in this country and call themselves Christians,

  29. and it costs them very little indeed.

  30. No, I have done that.

  31. We know many people, I imagine.

  32. Many people who say to Jesus,

  33. You can have my Sunday morning.

  34. Maybe even I'd give you a Wednesday evening.

  35. I would try and be a nice person too.

  36. But how I use my money,

  37. who I date,

  38. how I bring up my children,

  39. what job I do,

  40. is for me to decide.

  41. Many people in this country take the name of Christian

  42. and effectively treat Jesus like a good mate

  43. whose advice they can take or leave,

  44. or a genie in the sky

  45. to grant their wishes

  46. and forgive their sin.

  47. But Jesus is not a good mate.

  48. He is not a genie in the sky.

  49. He is the king of heaven.

  50. These parables begin,

  51. The kingdom of heaven is like,

  52. The kingdom of heaven is like a merchant in search of pearls.

  53. How does one enter the kingdom of heaven?

  54. Well, it's not so much that we go to a geographical place.

  55. It's that we submit our lives to the king of heaven,

  56. and that costs everything.

  57. There are some people whom to know it costs.

  58. An obvious example of that would be your boss,

  59. if you have a boss.

  60. When you enter the boss-worker relationship,

  61. you are sucking eggs really,

  62. but you promise to do X number of hours,

  63. to do Y duties,

  64. perhaps even be a certain sort of person,

  65. and that costs.

  66. Another example would be your spouse.

  67. Maybe this doesn't need explaining,

  68. but to have a spouse,

  69. you have to promise.

  70. I will honor you,

  71. love you,

  72. protect you,

  73. and be faithful to you

  74. until death do us part.

  75. No matter what,

  76. all that I am,

  77. I give to you,

  78. and all that I have,

  79. I share with you.

  80. And in my case,

  81. when I made that promise,

  82. it wasn't very much at all,

  83. but you know,

  84. you get the point.

  85. It costs to know your boss,

  86. it costs to be married to your spouse,

  87. and it costs to know Jesus.

  88. And it costs us everything,

  89. because the relationship we have with him

  90. is not simply that of a worker with a boss,

  91. or even simply as a bride of a bridegroom,

  92. though he is that to us,

  93. but as our king,

  94. who demands our life,

  95. our souls,

  96. our all,

  97. everything we have,

  98. everything we do,

  99. everything we love,

  100. he demands rule over.

  101. He demands to rule over our work,

  102. our school lives,

  103. our investments,

  104. our money,

  105. our relationships to friends,

  106. and parents,

  107. and children,

  108. and spouses.

  109. He says,

  110. whoever would be my disciple

  111. must deny themselves,

  112. take up their cross,

  113. and follow me.

  114. And he tells these stories

  115. about men who sold everything

  116. to teach us

  117. that we must surrender all to him.

  118. It may not mean

  119. that we literally sell

  120. all that we have,

  121. but it certainly means

  122. that we ask,

  123. what would Jesus have me do

  124. with all that I have.

  125. He even demands of us

  126. whatever the equivalent is

  127. of the favorite fez

  128. with a feather.

  129. And I don't know

  130. what that might be for you.

  131. It might be a collection

  132. of cash,

  133. would be a common one.

  134. Maybe an ambition,

  135. a career,

  136. a relation,

  137. a grudge.

  138. I remember very clearly

  139. when I discovered

  140. that Jesus had to be

  141. my king.

  142. I'd just gone to university,

  143. I had two great loves

  144. in my life.

  145. One was my girlfriend

  146. and one was badminton.

  147. The Lord very kindly

  148. sorted out my badminton for me.

  149. I didn't make the university team,

  150. I didn't even get close,

  151. so that was very simple.

  152. But I remember

  153. as I came under

  154. the preaching of God's word,

  155. and what I wanted to say

  156. to God was like,

  157. look God,

  158. you can have

  159. all these bits of my life,

  160. but you can't have her.

  161. I wanted to ring fence her.

  162. You can have this,

  163. but not her.

  164. But of course,

  165. Jesus did not

  166. accept those terms.

  167. And maybe that is

  168. you right now.

  169. At the start of a new year,

  170. you know that there is

  171. an area of your life

  172. you are trying to say

  173. to Jesus,

  174. I don't want you

  175. to have this.

  176. But we can only know

  177. Jesus on his terms.

  178. And his terms

  179. are the terms

  180. of a sovereign Lord.

  181. He demands everything.

  182. Knowing Jesus

  183. costs everything.

  184. And when you give him

  185. everything,

  186. that can look crazy.

  187. It can look

  188. absolutely mad.

  189. It's one of the reasons

  190. I really love

  191. the story.

  192. It just brings it out

  193. so well.

  194. You know,

  195. I remember

  196. as a child seeing it,

  197. you know,

  198. there's a man

  199. kicking his legs together

  200. with a pearl

  201. and nothing but his boxes.

  202. And you're like,

  203. what do you want

  204. a pearl for?

  205. Why did you get rid of,

  206. I mean,

  207. the freezer's full of food.

  208. He's got sausages

  209. and chips.

  210. Why would you do that?

  211. You can imagine,

  212. you know,

  213. there he is

  214. selling his stuff.

  215. Imagine he had a wife.

  216. Dear wife,

  217. why are you getting rid

  218. of the furniture?

  219. What do you mean

  220. you're selling the house?

  221. Are you,

  222. to buy a pearl?

  223. Are you nuts?

  224. And you can imagine

  225. her leaving.

  226. And I probably don't need

  227. to tell many of you this.

  228. You already know

  229. the cost

  230. and the crazy looks.

  231. Maybe you come to church

  232. every week,

  233. read your Bible

  234. and pray

  235. and your family

  236. wonder if you've been

  237. brainwashed by a cult.

  238. Maybe your colleagues

  239. think you are daft

  240. for living the lifestyle

  241. you do.

  242. Maybe you have

  243. a very high-powered job

  244. but you don't live

  245. a high-powered lifestyle.

  246. You give so much away

  247. and you're kind

  248. to guys at work

  249. you know one else's

  250. and they think

  251. you're a little bit nuts.

  252. You wonder if you have

  253. a screw loose somewhere.

  254. Or maybe your friends

  255. think you're crazy

  256. because you gave up

  257. your promising career

  258. to be at home

  259. with the children

  260. and you submit

  261. to your husband.

  262. What a thing.

  263. I beg your pardon.

  264. Or maybe it just might be

  265. whether it's at school

  266. you don't join in

  267. the gossiping.

  268. You don't join in

  269. the drinking.

  270. Or you're ready to say

  271. you're pro-life

  272. or something like that.

  273. And there are people

  274. like what?

  275. What is up with you?

  276. Are you mad?

  277. Are you insane?

  278. Jesus,

  279. is he really that precious?

  280. I don't think he's

  281. precious at all.

  282. And sometimes

  283. that can get to us.

  284. Sometimes we can think

  285. maybe I am mad.

  286. Maybe this is nuts

  287. coming out here

  288. on a New Year's Day

  289. through the rain

  290. to come and listen

  291. to a guy

  292. you've never met before.

  293. What is that about?

  294. I mean,

  295. Paul didn't tell you that.

  296. No,

  297. you didn't know that.

  298. But this is silly.

  299. But the whole point

  300. of the story is

  301. that in the end,

  302. if all your family

  303. called you mad

  304. and all your friends

  305. left you

  306. and you lost

  307. all your wealth,

  308. your career,

  309. your home

  310. and ended up

  311. persecuted

  312. and beaten

  313. and imprisoned

  314. and so all you had

  315. left in this world

  316. was your boxes

  317. and the Lord Jesus Christ

  318. and then you lost

  319. your life,

  320. you would still

  321. have everything.

  322. At the end of the story

  323. both men have nothing

  324. but a field

  325. and a pole

  326. that cost them all

  327. and they are

  328. over the moon

  329. because though

  330. knowing Jesus

  331. will cost you everything,

  332. he is worth more

  333. than anything

  334. in the world.

  335. And that is the main thing

  336. that this parable

  337. wants to teach us.

  338. Verse 44,

  339. the kingdom of heaven

  340. is like treasure

  341. hidden in a field

  342. which a man found

  343. and covered up

  344. then in his joy

  345. goes and sells

  346. all that he has

  347. and buys that field.

  348. Again,

  349. the kingdom of heaven

  350. is like a merchant

  351. in search of fine pearls

  352. and finding one pearl

  353. of great value

  354. went and sold

  355. all that he had

  356. and bought it.

  357. It's funny,

  358. you know,

  359. joking about,

  360. it was a joke

  361. in my head,

  362. but joking about

  363. it costing

  364. to know your spouse.

  365. It's a strange thing.

  366. Having a spouse

  367. is very costly.

  368. Even a wedding

  369. is very costly.

  370. It's very expensive.

  371. And it costs a lot

  372. as you go on.

  373. I mean,

  374. when you have kids,

  375. boy,

  376. that's a costly thing.

  377. But have you noticed

  378. that weddings

  379. are very rarely

  380. mournful occasions?

  381. Here they are

  382. making all these costs,

  383. paying all this money,

  384. saying all these

  385. hard promises

  386. and people aren't

  387. miserable.

  388. They're rejoicing.

  389. This is good news.

  390. Same when you have

  391. a child.

  392. People don't say,

  393. ah,

  394. people didn't say

  395. to my mom,

  396. I'm so sorry,

  397. Pauline.

  398. Ed is going to be

  399. so hard work,

  400. which mom likes

  401. to remind me of

  402. regularly.

  403. Even with me,

  404. they didn't say that.

  405. I'm sure they didn't

  406. say it to your parents.

  407. They would say,

  408. congratulations.

  409. Because some things

  410. are worth the cost.

  411. And knowing Jesus,

  412. well,

  413. what does Paul say?

  414. I consider all things

  415. lost compared to

  416. the surpassing greatness

  417. of knowing Jesus Christ,

  418. my Lord.

  419. With a wedding,

  420. we celebrate something

  421. that's so good

  422. that all the costs

  423. are worth it.

  424. Indeed,

  425. sometimes the costs

  426. themselves aren't bad

  427. for us,

  428. but really good.

  429. you think about

  430. what does it really

  431. cost you to know Jesus?

  432. For one thing,

  433. it costs you your sin.

  434. Your sin that was

  435. ruining your life.

  436. We can think

  437. that obedience

  438. to Jesus Christ

  439. is going to weigh us down.

  440. But what we tend to find

  441. is that when we start

  442. to obey,

  443. it's similar to what

  444. it must be like

  445. for a whale

  446. who spent all its life

  447. on the beach

  448. finally making its way back.

  449. to the ocean.

  450. It is true,

  451. obedience requires us

  452. to deny ourselves.

  453. But in a sense,

  454. in denying ourselves,

  455. we find ourselves.

  456. At the heart of self-denial

  457. is love.

  458. And by loving,

  459. God restores us

  460. in his image.

  461. Submission to the king

  462. of heaven,

  463. it fits us for heaven.

  464. And it makes us

  465. heavenly.

  466. my wife,

  467. if you asked my wife,

  468. Hannah,

  469. who is the person

  470. who has the most influence

  471. you in your life,

  472. she would say,

  473. without even thinking about it,

  474. she would say,

  475. my grandma.

  476. That's her mother's mother.

  477. She was called Rosemary.

  478. She went to India

  479. to be a missionary doctor.

  480. She spent about 18 years

  481. out there.

  482. While they were there,

  483. they saw absolutely

  484. no one converted.

  485. Zilcho.

  486. It cost them

  487. a huge amount to go.

  488. It cost them a lot

  489. to come back again.

  490. I only met her

  491. a couple of times.

  492. She was one of the most

  493. patient

  494. and lovely people

  495. I've ever met.

  496. One of the things

  497. that particularly

  498. I remember before

  499. is always offering you

  500. a biscuit.

  501. If you were around

  502. at her house,

  503. you were not allowed

  504. to be there

  505. if you did not have

  506. a biscuit in your hand.

  507. That was very memorable.

  508. But I never saw her angry.

  509. I always saw her grateful

  510. even though she was

  511. in a lot of pain

  512. at the time.

  513. And wonderfully,

  514. the Lord eventually

  515. used their work

  516. and brought many to Christ.

  517. But obedience to Christ

  518. is no loss for you.

  519. Becoming like Jesus

  520. is a great gain.

  521. It costs you your sin.

  522. It costs you your ease.

  523. But you were not made

  524. to live an easy life.

  525. And to come to Jesus

  526. sometimes costs you

  527. good things.

  528. Good things.

  529. But the reality

  530. is that these things

  531. can never satisfy.

  532. And these things

  533. we will lose anyway.

  534. It's a great irony

  535. that the very things

  536. we try and ring fence

  537. from the Lord Jesus

  538. are things that will be

  539. lost to us anywhere.

  540. I remember another story.

  541. Another guy I knew,

  542. he, well,

  543. at university,

  544. he fell in love

  545. with a man.

  546. He was a Christian.

  547. He walked away

  548. from Christianity

  549. to go and be with this guy.

  550. After one month,

  551. they broke up.

  552. I was so gutted.

  553. And even then,

  554. he didn't wake up.

  555. But even if they'd had

  556. a long and happy,

  557. I don't know,

  558. relationship together,

  559. they just all lost

  560. each other in the end.

  561. Everything we try

  562. and ring fence,

  563. we will lose in the end.

  564. But he is no fool

  565. who gives

  566. what he cannot keep

  567. to gain

  568. what he cannot lose.

  569. and you will never,

  570. ever lose Jesus.

  571. And I don't know

  572. what you guys love.

  573. I don't know you guys

  574. very well at all.

  575. And I don't know

  576. what you've had

  577. to give up for Jesus.

  578. There may be

  579. all sorts of people here

  580. who've given up

  581. all sorts of things

  582. for the Lord Jesus Christ.

  583. There may be reputations

  584. or careers

  585. or countries

  586. or family members.

  587. Think about the thing

  588. that Jesus Christ

  589. has cost you most.

  590. And if it's a person,

  591. because people

  592. are the most precious,

  593. think they are lovely

  594. and beautiful

  595. and funny

  596. and you have memories

  597. of joy together.

  598. If you ask the question,

  599. from where did they get

  600. their beauty,

  601. their loveliness,

  602. their joy from?

  603. The answer is

  604. always

  605. from the Lord Jesus Christ.

  606. If you sacrifice

  607. anything for him,

  608. you have in him

  609. the source

  610. of whatever it is

  611. that you sacrificed.

  612. You have the one

  613. who painted

  614. their beauty.

  615. You have the one

  616. who imagined

  617. their humor.

  618. You have the one

  619. who gave them

  620. their personality.

  621. From where does

  622. their loveliness,

  623. their goodness,

  624. their truth come from?

  625. If not from him

  626. who is eternal

  627. and infinite love,

  628. truth and goodness.

  629. How lovely must he be

  630. who is the source

  631. of all goodness,

  632. truth and beauty.

  633. If you have

  634. the Lord Jesus Christ,

  635. you do not simply

  636. have something

  637. in this creation

  638. but the creator himself

  639. who now mediates

  640. his goodness to us

  641. in a million of ways

  642. if we could only

  643. have eyes to see them.

  644. But one day

  645. we will see him.

  646. and that one look

  647. will make up

  648. for all the sorrows

  649. that we face

  650. in this life.

  651. My friends,

  652. if we had our heads

  653. screwed on,

  654. we would not ask

  655. is following Jesus

  656. worth it?

  657. Of course it's worth it.

  658. Of course he is

  659. the pearl of great price.

  660. Of course we want him.

  661. He is the life

  662. of our lives.

  663. He is the light,

  664. life of our lives,

  665. the light of our eyes,

  666. the treasure of our souls.

  667. The question we would ask

  668. is why on earth

  669. would he,

  670. the king of heaven,

  671. want anything

  672. to do with me?

  673. A sinner

  674. who has done

  675. wretched things,

  676. who has ignored

  677. and disobeyed him,

  678. who has continued

  679. to treasure things

  680. more than him,

  681. who deserves nothing

  682. but the fire of hell.

  683. But the wonderful thing

  684. is there's another way

  685. of reading this parable.

  686. The main way

  687. is so obviously

  688. to give up all

  689. to take Christ

  690. the treasure.

  691. But in another sense,

  692. Christ is the one

  693. who sold all for us

  694. to make us his treasure,

  695. us of no worth.

  696. Not ceasing to be

  697. what he was,

  698. he became what he was not.

  699. The eternal made in time,

  700. the infinite made finite,

  701. God become man.

  702. And his family

  703. did call him mad.

  704. And all his friends

  705. left him.

  706. He had no wealth,

  707. no place to lay his head.

  708. He was persecuted

  709. and beaten.

  710. He was mocked

  711. and slandered.

  712. His clothes

  713. were stripped from him

  714. and his career

  715. led to a cross.

  716. But there he died

  717. for our sin

  718. to make us

  719. his treasure.

  720. He died to bring us

  721. who deserve hell

  722. to the loving arms

  723. of the Father

  724. and save us forevermore.

  725. He died

  726. that all who believed

  727. shall be his

  728. and he

  729. shall be ours.

  730. And so, my friends,

  731. there is no greater treasure

  732. than the Lord Jesus Christ.

  733. this year,

  734. let us put our trust

  735. in him.

  736. No matter who we are,

  737. no matter what we have done,

  738. let us come to him

  739. as our Lord

  740. and our God.

  741. Let us follow him,

  742. submit our lives to him,

  743. no matter what it costs,

  744. because he is worth

  745. everything.

  746. And if we find ourselves

  747. disheartened

  748. and discouraged

  749. at the loss,

  750. let us remind ourselves

  751. we have

  752. the Lord Jesus Christ,

  753. the Lord Jesus Christ.

  754. He is ours.

  755. And we are his

  756. and in him God,

  757. Father, Son,

  758. and Holy Spirit

  759. who is worth more

  760. than anything

  761. in the world.

  762. Let's pray.
