  1. What a joy it is to be with you this morning.

  2. I bring with me the greetings, the love and the prayers of the congregation at London City Presbyterian Church.

  3. It's been great to get to know your minister, Paul, as I've settled into life in London.

  4. As I was thinking about coming here this morning, I was thinking, what would be good for a congregation I've not met?

  5. And what would be good for all of our souls together?

  6. And so I thought, what about the Apostle Paul's prayer for the Christians in Ephesus?

  7. You know, Paul planted a church in Ephesus.

  8. We don't believe that this is the congregation he's writing to here in Ephesians chapter 1.

    Ephesians 1 chapter mention

  9. This is most likely a circular letter for the presbytery, the churches in the area of Ephesus.

  10. And if you know anything about the letter of Ephesians, you'll know Paul is writing to tell them about the glorious gospel of grace.

  11. The first three chapters unpack the theology of grace.

  12. And the final three chapters apply it to our lives as individuals, as families, as workers.

  13. It's an amazing letter that unpacks the amazing theology of the gospel.

  14. And as we come to this section in chapter 1, there's that breathtaking beginning where Paul says in verse 3,

  15. Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly realms.

  16. Have you ever wondered, what are the spiritual blessings that are yours in Christ, who trusts the Lord Jesus Christ?

  17. Well, Paul unpacks them.

  18. Verse 4,

  19. You are chosen before He laid the foundation of the earth to be holy and blameless.

  20. In love, He predestined you to be adopted as His sons and daughters in His Son.

  21. You have redemption, the forgiveness of sins by the blood of Jesus.

  22. You have been lavished with the riches of God's grace.

  23. And in verses 13 and 14, He says, He has filled us with His Spirit, the deposit and the guarantee of our inheritance.

  24. Now, it's in light of this amazing beginning that Paul the pastor says, let's pray.

  25. And he prays that the eyes of the heart of these Christians in Ephesus would be wide open to what they have in Jesus.

  26. And so, brothers and sisters, this morning, that's what I want us to focus our attention on.

  27. Paul's prayer for the Christians in Ephesus.

  28. Before we begin, let's just bow our heads and let's just pray and ask for God's help.

  29. Lord, may the words of my mouth, may the meditation of all of our hearts,

  30. be pleasing and acceptable in your presence.

  31. And we pray this in the name of our rock and our redeemer, the Lord Jesus Christ.

  32. Amen.

  33. Have you ever heard the name William Randolph Hearst?

  34. He was the Rupert Murdoch of the early 20th century.

  35. He was a media mogul.

  36. He actually, his company put into way the way that newspapers are published.

  37. And as a result, he became a multi-millionaire.

  38. And one of his favorite pastimes was collecting antiques.

  39. He loved to come to Europe and collect 14th, 15th, 16th century paintings.

  40. He loved to come to Britain for grandfather clocks.

  41. He would visit Syria for rugs, China for vases.

  42. You name it, he had it.

  43. He had many mansions.

  44. He had acquired so many antiques that he literally had to build storehouses to keep all that he had.

  45. One occasion, he was sitting in his mansion and he was reading a sort of art dealer's magazine.

  46. And it mentioned a painting that everyone was searching for.

  47. And he thought, I want that.

  48. So he picked up his phone and he phoned one of his agents and he said,

  49. Listen, I'll give you all the money, all the time it takes, but you're going to get me this painting.

  50. I want it for my collection.

  51. So offset his agent.

  52. Days turned into weeks.

  53. Weeks turned into months.

  54. And then finally, there was a knock at the door of Mr. Hearst.

  55. It was his agent.

  56. And he was beaming with a smile.

  57. So Mr. Hearst said to him, Did you manage to get this piece of art for me?

  58. His agent said, Yes.

  59. And Mr. Hearst, as he was bringing them into the home, said,

  60. Now tell me, where did you find it?

  61. His agent said, Well, sir, you are never going to believe this.

  62. I've spent a lot of your money.

  63. I've taken up a lot of your time.

  64. When all along, that piece of art was in one of your storehouses.

  65. That true story is a modern parable of what you and I are like as Christians.

  66. You see, in our union to Jesus Christ, we possess every spiritual blessing in the heavenly realm.

  67. But like Mr. Hearst, we sometimes fail to take the time to enjoy and appreciate what we have in the Lord Jesus Christ.

  68. And why is Pastor Paul so conscious that believers, the eyes of our heart often get filled with the worries of life and the anxieties of life,

  69. praise for these Christians, that the eyes of their heart would be wide open to three things.

  70. Look down at verse 16.

  71. I do not cease to give thanks for you, remembering you in my prayers,

  72. that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory,

  73. may give you the spirit of wisdom and of revelation in the knowledge of Him,

  74. having the eyes of your hearts enlightened, that is opened, that you may know,

  75. number one, what is the hope to which He has called you?

  76. Number two, what are the riches of His glorious inheritance in the saints?

  77. And then number three, and what is the immeasurable greatness of His power toward us who believe?

  78. So three points this morning, that the eyes of our hearts may be wide open to our hope in Christ,

  79. to our riches in Christ, and to the power that is ours in Christ.

  80. So first of all, hope.

  81. And let me begin by asking you this question.

  82. Those of you who are Christians, do you live as a person of hope?

  83. Do the eyes of your heart see the hope to which you have been called?

  84. Or have you taken this amazing blessing, this amazing treasure that is yours in Christ,

  85. and have you stored it away in the storehouse of your heart and head,

  86. never to consider it afresh again?

  87. Well, Pastor Paul prays here,

  88. I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened,

  89. in order that you may know the hope to which you have been called.

  90. Do you know what biblical hope is?

  91. It's different from worldly hope, if I can put it like that,

  92. which is wishful thinking, I hope it's not going to rain today,

  93. I hope it's going to be gloriously sunny.

  94. Biblical hope is a confident expectation of a guaranteed result.

  95. Biblical hope is a confident expectation of a guaranteed result.

  96. Christ means what He says.

  97. He says what He means.

  98. He makes promises and keeps promises.

  99. We've just been celebrating Easter.

  100. Easter is where we see our hope in all of its glory.

  101. The resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead.

  102. He said He would come, live for us, die for us, and be raised for our justification.

  103. Because He has finished the work, because He's been victorious over death,

  104. all who trust in Him have that future hope.

  105. We will never die but live forevermore.

  106. Our hope as Christians is rooted in the past work of Christ's life, death, and resurrection.

  107. And it impacts our future, because we know where we're going.

  108. But Paul would also, and Peter, in his writings say,

  109. our hope in Christ ought to impact us also in the here and now.

  110. So the apostle Peter speaks about our living hope.

  111. A hope that is alive, that animates us, that energizes us,

  112. because we trust in a living Savior.

  113. When I think about illustrating what hope is,

  114. biblical hope versus worldly hope, if I can put it like that,

  115. I think of when I was 18 years old.

  116. I used to work in a pharmacy.

  117. It puts the chemist on a Saturday.

  118. And across the road from the chemist I worked in,

  119. my late grandfather was a resident in a nursing home.

  120. And so on my lunch break, I'd go across to the nursing home.

  121. And I'm sure you've all been in old folks' home.

  122. When you walk into the lounge, it's always sweltering hot.

  123. And you've got all these old buddies,

  124. and they're sitting around tables playing dominoes,

  125. or doing crosswords, or watching the TV.

  126. And I'd often find my grandfather nestled in among some of the old ladies.

  127. So I'd pull up a chair, and they would see that I worked in the chemist,

  128. and so they would engage me in conversation.

  129. Oh, you work in the chemist?

  130. Well, do you know, when I was a little girl,

  131. that chemist used to be a flower shop?

  132. And it turned out that they'd grown up in this village,

  133. and so they would then go on and tell me,

  134. I went to school along the road,

  135. and they would just begin telling me their life story.

  136. And I married John, and John was an engineer,

  137. and we've had five children.

  138. John passed away many years ago.

  139. And our five children, only one of them lives nearby.

  140. The rest are all across the world.

  141. We've many grandchildren, some that we've never met,

  142. because my children don't come and visit anymore.

  143. I've been in here for many years, Andy.

  144. In fact, Andy, as I think of you working in the chemist,

  145. I keep boots in business because I'm in so much medication.

  146. And you know, when I was speaking to them,

  147. you know, the feeling that I felt inside,

  148. as they walked me through their life story,

  149. and they even brought it right up to the present,

  150. was a feeling of hopelessness.

  151. They could never speak about the future.

  152. Contrast that with those moments

  153. where a carer would clock

  154. that I had come to see my grandfather,

  155. who was a retired minister,

  156. and they would come over,

  157. they would say,

  158. listen, you should spend some time with your grandfather.

  159. So they would wheel him into his room.

  160. He was an old man in his mid-80s,

  161. frail and fragile.

  162. And every time I visited him,

  163. he would never let me leave

  164. without reading the Bible and praying.

  165. He could barely lift his head,

  166. but every time he did lift his head

  167. to look at me in the eye,

  168. he had this glint of excitement,

  169. and he loved to say,

  170. now, Andrew,

  171. I cannot wait to see my Savior.

  172. I cannot wait to get to glory.

  173. That, my friends,

  174. is a picture of hope.

  175. That is a confident expectation

  176. of a guaranteed result.

  177. And if you are united to Christ,

  178. that is what you possess in Christ.

  179. A living hope.

  180. Based on the past work of Jesus

  181. that has secured your future,

  182. but should impact you in the here and now.

  183. We have a hope,

  184. says the Apostle Paul in Romans chapter 5,

    Romans 5 chapter mention

  185. that does not,

  186. that will not put us to shame.

  187. Have you ever put your hope

  188. in a person,

  189. a loved one,

  190. maybe a parent,

  191. maybe a sibling,

  192. maybe a child,

  193. maybe a colleague,

  194. a boss,

  195. a pastor,

  196. and they've let you down?

  197. Have you ever put your hope

  198. in circumstances,

  199. wishing,

  200. hoping,

  201. they'll all work out for the best,

  202. and it's let you down?

  203. Here's the thing,

  204. if you place your hope firmly

  205. and securely

  206. in the Lord Jesus Christ,

  207. He will never,

  208. ever let you down.

  209. He means what He says,

  210. He says what He means,

  211. and you can trust Him

  212. for all that He has done for you.

  213. I wonder,

  214. do you take this blessing

  215. that you have in Christ,

  216. have you stored it away

  217. in the storehouse of your heart?

  218. Well,

  219. it's Pastor Paul's prayer

  220. that the eyes of our hearts

  221. would be wide open

  222. to the hope

  223. that we have

  224. in Jesus Christ.

  225. You know,

  226. right now in 2023,

  227. nationally,

  228. globally,

  229. there is a lot of hopelessness.

  230. Locally,

  231. I suspect,

  232. Ealing is just like

  233. the neighborhood

  234. I now live in.

  235. There's a lot of people

  236. without hope.

  237. And as Christians,

  238. we have a deep

  239. and unshakable hope

  240. because of what Christ has done.

  241. And so,

  242. brothers and sisters,

  243. we've got every reason

  244. to make known

  245. that hope.

  246. Those of you in this church

  247. who've got children

  248. and you're raising them

  249. in the fear and admonition

  250. of the Lord,

  251. your confidence

  252. is not in what you do.

  253. Your confidence

  254. ought to be

  255. in the God

  256. of hope.

  257. The God

  258. who has made promises

  259. to His people

  260. and loves to make good

  261. on His promises

  262. to His people.

  263. We have

  264. an incredible God

  265. who wants

  266. the eyes of our hearts

  267. to be wide open

  268. to that which is ours

  269. in Jesus Christ.

  270. second thing Paul

  271. prays for

  272. is that the eyes

  273. of our hearts

  274. would see the riches

  275. that we have

  276. in Jesus Christ.

  277. Just look at what

  278. he goes on to say.

  279. What are the riches

  280. of His glorious inheritance

  281. in the saints?

  282. And that begs the question,

  283. what does Paul mean

  284. when he says riches?

  285. Well,

  286. he's just made mention

  287. of them back in verse 7.

  288. He says,

  289. we have been lavished

  290. with the riches

  291. of God's grace.

  292. That's God's undeserved

  293. love and favor.

  294. And He's lavished it

  295. on us

  296. with all wisdom

  297. and insight.

  298. My professor

  299. at seminary

  300. used to speak about,

  301. you know the verse

  302. in Corinthians

  303. where Paul says

  304. that God's grace

  305. is sufficient for us?

  306. He used to say

  307. that God's grace

  308. is tailor-made for us,

  309. like a tailor-made suit.

  310. When God bestows grace

  311. on His people,

  312. it's done with wisdom

  313. and insight.

  314. He knows how broken,

  315. He knows how flawed,

  316. He knows how sinful we are,

  317. and He gives grace

  318. upon grace

  319. perfectly for us.

  320. Now,

  321. the grace of God

  322. is most clearly seen

  323. in the gift

  324. that is His Son,

  325. the Lord Jesus Christ.

  326. And brothers and sisters,

  327. whether we realize it or not,

  328. we are rich

  329. beyond anything

  330. we can imagine

  331. because we have been given

  332. the most incredible gift

  333. in the Lord Jesus Christ.

  334. I know that many of us

  335. as Christians

  336. know how spiritually

  337. bankrupt we are.

  338. We look in

  339. and we see this in.

  340. But I think that many

  341. of us as Christians

  342. don't realize

  343. that when you trust

  344. in Christ,

  345. when you're united

  346. with Christ,

  347. your bank account,

  348. spiritually speaking,

  349. is filled with

  350. the infinite wealth

  351. of the undeserved,

  352. unmerited love of God.

  353. such is the grace

  354. and the mercy of God

  355. that we wake up

  356. every morning

  357. and we receive

  358. daily grace

  359. and mercy

  360. for each day

  361. because great

  362. is His faithfulness.

  363. You know,

  364. in the run-up

  365. to this coronation,

  366. I've been reading

  367. a little bit

  368. about the royal family

  369. again,

  370. and it was quite

  371. striking to note

  372. that King Charles,

  373. on the passing

  374. of his mother's death,

  375. inherited all of our estates

  376. and all the assets

  377. are worth billions.

  378. And into his bank accounts

  379. has come hundreds of millions.

  380. And upon him coming king,

  381. he will receive gifts

  382. from other royal families,

  383. relations,

  384. as he takes up this role.

  385. And as I was reading

  386. these articles

  387. and learning more of this,

  388. I had the thought

  389. cross my mind,

  390. why in the world

  391. was I not born

  392. into that family?

  393. And then,

  394. I had to remind myself

  395. that I have been born again

  396. into the family

  397. where I have

  398. a glorious inheritance

  399. that cannot perish,

  400. spoil,

  401. or fade

  402. because it's kept

  403. in heaven for me

  404. and it is shielded

  405. by God's power.

  406. And I am written

  407. into the will

  408. of Almighty God.

  409. and I am an heir

  410. of Christ.

  411. And all that is Christ's

  412. is mine.

  413. He is mine.

  414. And that is the most

  415. incredible inheritance.

  416. And I am His.

  417. And so are you

  418. if you're a believer

  419. in the Lord Jesus Christ.

  420. And Paul here prays

  421. that these Ephesian Christians,

  422. that all Christians,

  423. we would have

  424. the eyes of our hearts

  425. wide open

  426. to the riches

  427. and the inheritance

  428. we have in Christ.

  429. What would the church

  430. of Jesus Christ

  431. look like

  432. if we stopped

  433. pretending

  434. that we were poor

  435. because we're not poor?

  436. We're rich

  437. in the love of God.

  438. And we started

  439. living as we are.

  440. Maybe you're

  441. in a difficult marriage.

  442. Maybe you've got

  443. difficult children.

  444. Maybe you've got

  445. difficult neighbors.

  446. Maybe you've got

  447. a difficult

  448. boss or colleague.

  449. Do you know

  450. that God

  451. is so gracious

  452. to you?

  453. He lavishes you

  454. each and every day

  455. with love

  456. that you don't deserve

  457. in order

  458. that you who realize

  459. that you need grace

  460. can show grace

  461. to those that you

  462. live with,

  463. work with,

  464. serve with.

  465. In the economy

  466. of grace,

  467. God makes us

  468. trophies of grace

  469. that we might be

  470. those who are so rich

  471. and overflowing

  472. with our riches

  473. that we want to

  474. share it with everyone.

  475. The most glorious

  476. privilege of standing

  477. here today is that

  478. I have the privilege

  479. of preaching

  480. the unsearchable riches

  481. that are ours

  482. in Jesus Christ.

  483. And the most glorious

  484. privilege we all have

  485. as Christians

  486. is that we get

  487. to share that

  488. as we live our lives.

  489. What would the church

  490. of Jesus Christ

  491. be like if we started

  492. to realize

  493. what we have in Christ?

  494. How rich we are

  495. in Christ?

  496. You know,

  497. you will inherit the earth

  498. if you're a believer.

  499. It's your inheritance.

  500. Blessed are the pure

  501. spirit for they

  502. shall inherit the earth.

  503. The glory of the gospel

  504. is that Christ's

  505. inheritances are

  506. inherited.

  507. So,

  508. are you like Mr.

  509. Hearst?

  510. You take the treasure,

  511. the blessing you have,

  512. you store it away,

  513. you forget you've got it.

  514. Paul prays here

  515. that the eyes of your

  516. hearts would be

  517. wide open to see

  518. the riches

  519. that are yours

  520. in Christ.

  521. Now,

  522. I would say that

  523. hope in some ways

  524. is enough.

  525. I'd say that

  526. the riches

  527. and inheritance

  528. is enough.

  529. Paul doesn't stop.

  530. He says,

  531. there's one more thing

  532. I pray that these

  533. Christians would have

  534. the eyes of their

  535. hearts wide open to

  536. and it says

  537. power.

  538. Look at verse 19,

  539. and what is the

  540. immeasurable greatness

  541. of his power

  542. towards us

  543. who believe?

  544. And do you see how

  545. he layers word upon

  546. word there?

  547. He says,

  548. immeasurable greatness

  549. of his power.

  550. Every single person

  551. who is in Christ

  552. has immeasurably

  553. great power

  554. at work within them.

  555. This is the most

  556. mind-boggling truth

  557. that we'll ever

  558. try and understand

  559. that if you're a believer,

  560. if you're united to Christ

  561. this morning,

  562. the third person

  563. of the Trinity

  564. has taken residence

  565. in your life.

  566. In chapter 1,

  567. verse 13 and 14,

  568. he says that the deposit

  569. and the guarantee

  570. of our inheritance

  571. is the indwelling

  572. of the Holy Spirit.

  573. In chapter 3,

  574. verse 20,

  575. in his benediction,

  576. now to him

  577. who is able

  578. to do immeasurably

  579. more than all

  580. we can ask

  581. or imagine

  582. and according

  583. to the power

  584. that is at work

  585. within us.

  586. So try and get

  587. your minds

  588. around this, right?

  589. God,

  590. the third person

  591. of the Trinity,

  592. is within you

  593. and is powerfully

  594. at work within you.

  595. So I know

  596. that as a Christian,

  597. we face temptation

  598. day in,

  599. day out,

  600. and we find ourselves

  601. succumbing

  602. time and time again.

  603. And I know

  604. that we can feel

  605. in a sinful world

  606. powerless,

  607. incredibly weak.

  608. And Satan

  609. would definitely

  610. want us to believe

  611. that that is true

  612. of us

  613. and there is a true

  614. sense that that

  615. is true of us.

  616. But,

  617. brother,

  618. sister,

  619. the Scriptures

  620. tell us

  621. we are indwell

  622. with the Holy Spirit,

  623. the same power

  624. that raised Jesus

  625. Christ from the dead

  626. and we are empowered

  627. to live the Christian life.

  628. So look at verse 19,

  629. what he says,

  630. and what is the

  631. immeasurable greatness

  632. his power towards us

  633. who believe

  634. according to the

  635. working of his

  636. great might

  637. that he worked

  638. in Christ

  639. when he raised him

  640. from the dead

  641. and seated him

  642. at his right hand

  643. in the heavenly places

  644. far above all rule,

  645. authority,

  646. power,

  647. and dominion

  648. above every name

  649. that is named

  650. not only in this age

  651. but also in the one to come.

  652. Here,

  653. Paul illustrates

  654. this is the power of God

  655. that is at work within you.

  656. It's the same power

  657. that raised Jesus

  658. from the dead.

  659. It's resurrection power.

  660. It's the power

  661. of the new life

  662. in Christ.

  663. And those who are united

  664. to Christ,

  665. the living,

  666. risen Christ

  667. who is seated

  668. above all powers

  669. and dominion

  670. and authority

  671. is him

  672. who we live

  673. in relationship with.

  674. This is the blessing

  675. that is ours in him.

  676. And it is truly

  677. mind-bending

  678. and astonishing

  679. because when I look

  680. at my Christian life,

  681. I don't sometimes feel

  682. as if almighty God

  683. is living within me

  684. and is powerfully

  685. at work in me.

  686. But here's the thing,

  687. it's not about my feelings,

  688. it's about the facts

  689. of the gospel.

  690. When I was a minister

  691. in Cumbernauld,

  692. one of the great privileges

  693. I had was

  694. shepherding the old,

  695. preparing them for glory.

  696. I sat next to many

  697. a hospital bed

  698. and many

  699. next to an old saint

  700. on their deathbed

  701. and they were weak

  702. and they were fragile

  703. and they were fading away,

  704. outwardly wasting away.

  705. You know what was glorious?

  706. I learned more from them

  707. than they ever learned

  708. from me

  709. because inwardly

  710. they were being renewed

  711. day by day

  712. and they had something

  713. that money can't buy,

  714. they had something

  715. that you can't have

  716. unless God gives you

  717. and that is

  718. they had the power

  719. and the love

  720. and the grace

  721. to share with me

  722. to say that Christ is king

  723. and we're going to be with him.

  724. Paul prays here

  725. that the eyes of our hearts

  726. would be wide open

  727. to the blessing

  728. of God's power

  729. that is in us.

  730. Now,

  731. as we bring this

  732. to a conclusion,

  733. let me give you

  734. an illustration

  735. that might tie

  736. all this together.

  737. I grew up

  738. just south of Glasgow

  739. but about 100 years ago,

  740. north of Glasgow,

  741. there was a little boy

  742. called John.

  743. When John was a little boy,

  744. he stumbled into a field

  745. and he heard

  746. a field preacher

  747. and he became a Christian.

  748. And John grew up

  749. and he became

  750. a Baptist minister.

  751. He married

  752. and him and his wife

  753. had a little girl

  754. and then sadly

  755. his wife passed away.

  756. And so John's sister

  757. moved in

  758. to his man

  759. so she could help him

  760. pastor.

  761. And John was a very

  762. gifted preacher,

  763. so much so

  764. that he got an invitation

  765. to go and preach

  766. in America

  767. at Moody Church

  768. in Chicago.

  769. And so John

  770. bought three tickets,

  771. one for him,

  772. one for his sister,

  773. one for his daughter,

  774. for the maiden voyage

  775. of the Titanic.

  776. You know the story

  777. better than I do.

  778. It crashed

  779. into the iceberg

  780. and the unsinkable ship

  781. would be sunk.

  782. But it is recorded

  783. for us

  784. what happened

  785. when the alarm

  786. was raised.

  787. Pastor John Harper

  788. was heard saying this,

  789. all women,

  790. children,

  791. and unconverted men

  792. aboard the lifeboats

  793. now.

  794. All Christian men

  795. stand back.

  796. This ship

  797. is going down.

  798. Brothers,

  799. we are going up.

  800. Do you know

  801. what that is?

  802. That is a man

  803. whose eyes

  804. of his heart

  805. were wide open

  806. to the hope

  807. he had in Christ.

  808. Pastor John Harper,

  809. as the Titanic

  810. was beginning

  811. to plummet

  812. into the icicle

  813. trees in the Atlantic Ocean,

  814. was heard shouting

  815. to the orchestra

  816. aboard the ship,

  817. play nearer,

  818. my God,

  819. to thee.

  820. That is hope.

  821. That is a confident

  822. expectation

  823. of a guaranteed result.

  824. He jumped

  825. overboard,

  826. landed into

  827. the water,

  828. and he had

  829. his life jacket on

  830. and so he managed

  831. to grab a piece

  832. of debris

  833. and whilst he was

  834. in the water,

  835. the man who had

  836. been converted

  837. by a field preacher

  838. became a sea preacher

  839. because he started

  840. to proclaim

  841. the unsearchable

  842. riches of Christ

  843. there in the

  844. freezing cold

  845. water.

  846. How so?

  847. By the power

  848. of the Holy Spirit.

  849. This was his

  850. deathbed moment

  851. and yet he felt

  852. enabled to proclaim

  853. the unsearchable

  854. riches that were

  855. in Christ.

  856. There was a man

  857. who jumped overboard,

  858. he didn't have

  859. a life jacket,

  860. he sunk for a moment,

  861. came to the top

  862. and Pastor John Harper

  863. was able to grab him,

  864. bring him onto

  865. the piece of debris,

  866. he took off his

  867. life jacket

  868. and put it on him

  869. and in that sense

  870. he saved this man's life

  871. and he turned to the man

  872. and he said,

  873. have you believed

  874. upon the Lord Jesus Christ?

  875. And I can't believe this

  876. but there

  877. around the night

  878. they had a gospel

  879. conversation

  880. and that man said

  881. no and Pastor John Harper

  882. said,

  883. you must believe

  884. in the Lord Jesus Christ

  885. and be saved.

  886. Pastor John Harper

  887. went to glory

  888. that night.

  889. Six years later

  890. there was a reunion

  891. of all of the survivors

  892. of the Titanic

  893. in Ontario,

  894. Canada

  895. and a man stood up

  896. and he said,

  897. I am the last convert,

  898. Pastor John Harper.

  899. That night

  900. in the freezing

  901. ice cold water

  902. he proclaimed

  903. the unsearchable

  904. riches of Christ

  905. to me

  906. and I was saved.

  907. That friends

  908. is because

  909. John Harper

  910. lived with his eyes

  911. wide open

  912. to the hope,

  913. to the riches

  914. and he lived his life

  915. in dependence

  916. upon the power

  917. of Almighty God.

  918. And as believers today

  919. Paul's prayer

  920. for us

  921. is that you and I

  922. would not take

  923. the blessings

  924. that we have

  925. in our union

  926. with Christ

  927. and store them away

  928. in the storehouse

  929. of our heart

  930. but instead

  931. that the eyes

  932. of our heart

  933. would be wide open

  934. to that which is ours.

  935. If you've never

  936. trusted in Christ

  937. believe upon

  938. the Lord Jesus Christ

  939. and you shall be saved.

  940. You'll experience

  941. a love that you don't deserve,

  942. a love that you'd never merit.

  943. You'll be given

  944. an inheritance

  945. that's so glorious.

  946. You'll be written

  947. in the will of God.

  948. If you are a believer

  949. in Christ

  950. as you step into

  951. this week

  952. you've got grace

  953. for your marriage,

  954. grace for your children,

  955. grace for those

  956. you work with.

  957. Grace to share

  958. in the gospel.

  959. You've got hope.

  960. Live as a person

  961. of hope

  962. in a world

  963. filled with hopelessness

  964. and do so

  965. all independent

  966. confidence

  967. on the power

  968. of almighty God.

  969. Let's pray.

  970. Okay.
