  1. Let me pray and then we'll look at this together.

  2. Thank you so much, Heavenly Father, for your kindness to us,

  3. the ways you speak to us, to tell us of your Son and your grace to us in him.

  4. Please, by your Spirit now, open our hearts, open our minds.

  5. Help us to see Jesus, to trust him, to follow him.

  6. We ask in his name. Amen.

  7. Amen. Well, there may be some chapters in the book of Genesis

  8. that are not very well known, some bits of Abraham's life

  9. that aren't terribly familiar to us.

  10. But as Paul mentioned just earlier,

  11. I doubt that's going to be a problem for us this evening, is it?

  12. This famous, some might say infamous, account that we have before us here.

  13. What is the Lord doing?

  14. How could he ever put someone through something like this?

  15. So let's not miss a round.

  16. There's no long introduction this evening.

  17. That takes us straight into the first thing for us to see.

  18. A huge thing in this passage, isn't it?

  19. The puzzle, just the sheer puzzle of God's ways.

  20. How so often they leave his people, they leave you and me sometimes,

  21. thinking, what on earth is he doing?

  22. Just one, after these things, God tested Abraham.

  23. So immediately, as is sometimes the case in the Bible,

  24. we know more than Abraham does about what's going on in this incident here.

  25. God is testing him. He's testing his faith.

  26. His fear of God, we find out later.

  27. Not testing in the sense that the Lord doesn't really know

  28. whether or not Abraham has faith,

  29. or what kind of faith it might be if he does,

  30. so he's got to run a test to try to work it out.

  31. Of course the Lord knows.

  32. He's God. He knows everything.

  33. But testing in the sense of proving it,

  34. of demonstrating it for other people.

  35. So you think of engineers, perhaps,

  36. piling huge loads onto a brand new, unlikely-looking bridge.

  37. Not because they don't know if it's going to work,

  38. at least you hope not.

  39. They've run the calculations.

  40. But to try to show people like us,

  41. it works, it's safe, you can walk on it.

  42. Well, sort of like that here, really.

  43. The Lord showing Abraham and us what real faith looks like.

  44. We'll come back to that thought in a few moments' time.

  45. Verse 2.

  46. He said, the Lord said,

  47. Take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love,

  48. and go to the land of Moriah,

  49. and offer him there as a burnt offering

  50. on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you.

  51. And there's such a danger we gloss over those words,

  52. especially if we're very, very familiar with the story.

  53. Just let them land on you for a moment.

  54. Imagine being Abraham, hearing God say this to you.

  55. Take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love,

  56. and go to the land of Moriah and offer him.

  57. You notice every phrase kind of deepening the pain

  58. of what Abraham realizes he's being asked to do.

  59. Your son, your only son, now that Ishmael's gone,

  60. whom you love.

  61. Take him, go to the land of Moriah,

  62. which we're about to realize is three days' journey away.

  63. That is a lot of time to think about

  64. what you've just been asked to do.

  65. And when you get there, sacrifice him.

  66. Most parents, including Christian parents,

  67. we're super sensitive about our children, aren't we?

  68. We really are.

  69. You think very, very carefully, don't you,

  70. before you say something critical

  71. about someone else's child to their parents,

  72. or ask the parent to do something

  73. you know their child isn't going to like.

  74. Teachers, if you're any teachers here,

  75. you must know this more than any of us, don't you?

  76. You must brace yourselves

  77. for some of those conversations you have to have.

  78. Probably one of the main forms of idolatry

  79. in the Western Church today.

  80. I'll do anything for you, Lord.

  81. I'll give up anything for you,

  82. so long as it doesn't affect my children.

  83. And God just goes straight there.

  84. Offer him, he says.

  85. Of course, by this stage in the book of Genesis,

  86. it's not just the pain of losing his son

  87. and being the one through whom that son will die

  88. that is so hard for Abraham.

  89. There's a real theological problem here as well,

  90. isn't there?

  91. Because who is Isaac?

  92. He's not just a dearly loved only child.

  93. He's the child of the promise.

  94. So God's great promise to undo the curse of sin

  95. by bringing blessing into the world

  96. through Abraham's family

  97. after Abraham,

  98. it all hangs on Isaac.

  99. It rests on him.

  100. You lose Isaac at this stage, it's over.

  101. And now God's saying,

  102. he must die.

  103. And you can imagine Abraham wrestling with that,

  104. can't you?

  105. You've promised this, Lord,

  106. but now you're commanding this.

  107. I wonder whether you've ever found yourself

  108. thinking you just haven't got a clue

  109. what God is doing.

  110. Can't even begin to make sense

  111. of something he's commanding

  112. or asking you to do

  113. or something he's allowing to happen,

  114. something you seem to be leading you towards,

  115. perhaps.

  116. Maybe showering with blessing

  117. and then suddenly he snatches it away.

  118. And in our heads, of course,

  119. we know moments like that shouldn't be a surprise,

  120. should they?

  121. After all, he's God and we're not.

  122. So, you know,

  123. just as you wouldn't expect a child

  124. in a reception class at school

  125. to understand everything

  126. their head teacher's doing,

  127. it would be ridiculous, wouldn't it?

  128. Can you imagine a four-year-old

  129. marching into a head teacher's office,

  130. demanding an explanation

  131. for every decision the head teacher makes?

  132. And of course,

  133. the gap between a four-year-old

  134. and a head teacher,

  135. that is nothing compared to the gap

  136. between you and me and the Lord.

  137. Of course we shouldn't expect

  138. to get our heads around his ways.

  139. But here's a helpful reminder

  140. of how painful that can sometimes be.

  141. Not just an intellectual puzzle,

  142. agony emotionally sometimes.

  143. The puzzle of God's ways.

  144. Then the second thing for us to see,

  145. the faith God seeks.

  146. The faith he seeks.

  147. It's the faith he shows

  148. that Abraham has.

  149. You see,

  150. what is Christian faith, really?

  151. What does it look like

  152. when we really trust in him?

  153. What kind of response

  154. does the Lord long to see

  155. from people like you and me?

  156. And you notice a couple of things

  157. that we see about it here

  158. in this passage.

  159. First,

  160. real faith

  161. is obedient.

  162. It does what God says.

  163. So verse three,

  164. and don't worry,

  165. we are going to speed up considerably

  166. in just a moment.

  167. But verse three,

  168. so Abraham rose early in the morning,

  169. saddled his donkey

  170. and took two of his young men with him

  171. and his son Isaac

  172. and he cut the wood

  173. for the burnt offering

  174. and arose

  175. and went to the place

  176. of which God had told him.

  177. It's very different, isn't it,

  178. to how we'd write that today.

  179. There's nothing in there

  180. about how Abraham's feeling.

  181. We'd be full of that,

  182. wouldn't we?

  183. Although,

  184. I wonder whether we get

  185. just a little glimpse.

  186. He's up early.

  187. You sense

  188. he's probably not slept.

  189. That night,

  190. thinking through

  191. what he's been told to do.

  192. He collects Isaac,

  193. the other things he needs

  194. and he heads off

  195. just as God has told him to do.

  196. Because that's the point.

  197. Real faith

  198. does what God says.

  199. Martin Luther put it so well,

  200. didn't he?

  201. We're saved by faith alone.

  202. But the faith that saves

  203. is never alone.

  204. So just as Abraham

  205. was saved by faith,

  206. Genesis 15 told us,

  207. Abraham believed the Lord

  208. and he counted it to him

  209. as righteousness.

  210. But that belief he had

  211. that saved him

  212. didn't stand alone.

  213. He didn't just say

  214. he was trusting God.

  215. I thought anyone

  216. could do that,

  217. can't they?

  218. All you need is a voice

  219. and you can say

  220. you're trusting God.

  221. Anyone can say the grief

  222. we said together earlier.

  223. But he shows it

  224. by doing what God says

  225. and obeying his commands.

  226. Even the things

  227. that we wish God

  228. hadn't said perhaps.

  229. The commands

  230. that we can't understand.

  231. The ones that we know

  232. will be really painful

  233. to obey.

  234. Faith God seeks

  235. obeys him

  236. and that's a very relevant

  237. thought isn't it

  238. at the moment

  239. as just increasingly

  240. doing what God says

  241. is less and less popular

  242. in our society now.

  243. And then notice

  244. the other remarkable thing

  245. about true faith.

  246. It trusts the Lord

  247. to keep his promises

  248. beyond the grave.

  249. You see how does Abraham

  250. reconcile those two things

  251. he's heard from God?

  252. So Isaac is the child

  253. of the promise.

  254. He must live

  255. if that promise

  256. is going to come true.

  257. But here's God

  258. asking Abraham

  259. to put him to death.

  260. God says Isaac must die.

  261. Which is it?

  262. How can they both be true?

  263. And I think there is a clue

  264. to how Abraham is thinking

  265. in verse 5.

  266. We'll pick it up

  267. verse 4.

  268. On the third day

  269. Abraham lifted up his eyes

  270. and saw the place

  271. from afar.

  272. Then Abraham said

  273. to his young men

  274. stay here with the donkey

  275. I and the boy

  276. will go over there

  277. and worship

  278. and come again to you.

  279. You notice those

  280. last few words?

  281. Not just

  282. and I will come

  283. back to you

  284. but I and the boy

  285. will.

  286. Me and Isaac.

  287. Isaac who

  288. so far as I know

  289. I will put to death

  290. on that mountain

  291. over there.

  292. He will come back

  293. with me

  294. to see you again.

  295. You see what is that?

  296. Is that wishful thinking?

  297. Is that

  298. refusing to face

  299. the facts?

  300. It wouldn't be the last time

  301. would it

  302. in the face of death?

  303. Or could it be

  304. a deep confidence

  305. in God's ability

  306. to keep his promises

  307. and that not being

  308. limited by death

  309. but ultimately

  310. demonstrated

  311. and proven

  312. in resurrection life

  313. beyond.

  314. But more simply

  315. even if Isaac

  316. must die

  317. on that mountain

  318. Abraham

  319. trusts God

  320. to bring him

  321. back to life

  322. as well.

  323. God has to do that

  324. he knows

  325. if this promise

  326. of blessing

  327. is going to come true

  328. and that's certainly

  329. what the book of Hebrews

  330. says when it reflects

  331. on Abraham's life

  332. and that great gallery

  333. of heroes of the faith

  334. that we get

  335. in Hebrews chapter 11.

    Hebrews 11 chapter mention

  336. By faith Abraham

  337. when he was tested

  338. offered up Isaac

  339. and he who had received

  340. the promises

  341. was in the act

  342. of offering up

  343. his only son

  344. of whom it was said

  345. through Isaac

  346. shall your offspring

  347. be named.

  348. He Abraham

  349. considered that God

  350. was able

  351. even to raise him

  352. from the dead.

  353. deep confidence

  354. death won't be

  355. the end of the story.

  356. It can't be.

  357. There must be more

  358. if what God has promised

  359. is going to come true

  360. and so it is of course

  361. with you and me

  362. and Christian brothers

  363. and sisters

  364. right back through history

  365. and right across

  366. the world today

  367. God's promises

  368. to us

  369. in the Lord Jesus

  370. just so phenomenal

  371. aren't they?

  372. Every spiritual blessing

  373. ours in him

  374. he says

  375. and yet our experience

  376. of that at the moment

  377. so much less

  378. in this life

  379. suffering

  380. and opposition

  381. and disappointment

  382. and maybe even

  383. persecution too

  384. and even if we don't

  385. personally experience

  386. too many of those things

  387. even so

  388. our experience

  389. nowhere near

  390. the full

  391. expanse

  392. of what God

  393. has promised.

  394. We get into so much

  395. trouble don't we?

  396. We mess ourselves up

  397. when we try

  398. and convince ourselves

  399. no this is it

  400. this is as good

  401. as it gets now

  402. this is everything

  403. but it's okay

  404. isn't it

  405. because this life

  406. is not all

  407. after death

  408. when Jesus returns

  409. that's when so many

  410. of those things

  411. that the Lord

  412. has promised

  413. really will

  414. be felt to be true.

  415. The faith of God

  416. speaks

  417. obeying him

  418. hoping beyond the grave

  419. so verses 7 and 8

  420. even when Isaac

  421. suddenly realises

  422. hang on

  423. something's missing

  424. and asks that question

  425. can you imagine

  426. how this must have

  427. just cut Abraham

  428. to the heart?

  429. Dad

  430. where's the lamb?

  431. Even then

  432. Abraham still carries

  433. on treading that

  434. path of obedience

  435. up the mountain

  436. when he gets there

  437. verse 9

  438. builds the altar

  439. and prepares to

  440. slay his son

  441. which brings us

  442. third to the

  443. salvation God

  444. provides

  445. the salvation

  446. that God provides

  447. Abraham

  448. Abraham

  449. this voice

  450. from heaven

  451. cries

  452. and we get

  453. the sense

  454. don't we

  455. it's right

  456. at the last

  457. minute

  458. just as the

  459. knife

  460. is about

  461. to come down

  462. really urgent

  463. don't do it

  464. God says

  465. now your faith

  466. is clear

  467. because you have

  468. not withheld

  469. your son

  470. and nearby

  471. there's a ram

  472. for Abraham

  473. to offer

  474. instead

  475. to die

  476. in Isaac's

  477. place

  478. which is what

  479. happens

  480. so verse 14

  481. Abraham called

  482. the name of

  483. that place

  484. the Lord

  485. will provide

  486. as it is said

  487. to this day

  488. on the mount

  489. of the Lord

  490. it shall be

  491. provided

  492. God provides

  493. a substitute

  494. something to

  495. come and die

  496. in Isaac's

  497. place

  498. and it's a

  499. pattern we see

  500. so often

  501. isn't it

  502. right across

  503. the Old Testament

  504. most clearly

  505. in that sacrificial

  506. system in the

  507. tabernacle

  508. in the temple

  509. at this stage

  510. still yet to come

  511. the temple

  512. you know from

  513. later

  514. built

  515. guess where

  516. I love this

  517. detail

  518. right here

  519. on Mount

  520. Moriah

  521. where all

  522. this happens

  523. the place

  524. where every

  525. day for

  526. centuries

  527. animals would

  528. die

  529. just as

  530. God commanded

  531. in the place

  532. of his

  533. people

  534. when they

  535. sinned

  536. each of

  537. them

  538. pointing

  539. forward

  540. to the

  541. sacrifice

  542. that this

  543. moment is

  544. pointing forward

  545. to as well

  546. Isaac's

  547. haunting

  548. question

  549. there in

  550. verse 7

  551. where is

  552. the land

  553. for the

  554. burnt

  555. offering

  556. one person

  557. has said

  558. it's as if

  559. that question

  560. it kind of

  561. hangs over

  562. the whole

  563. of the rest

  564. of the Old

  565. Testament

  566. it's a question

  567. the whole

  568. of the rest

  569. of the Old

  570. Testament

  571. can't quite

  572. answer

  573. where is

  574. the one

  575. who is going

  576. to come

  577. and really

  578. take away

  579. people's sins

  580. in a way

  581. that of course

  582. no animal

  583. ever could

  584. and so even

  585. at the end

  586. of the Old

  587. Testament

  588. where is

  589. he

  590. still to

  591. come

  592. until that

  593. magic moment

  594. John's

  595. Gospel

  596. John 1

  597. from the

  598. Baptist

  599. chatting

  600. with some

  601. of his

  602. disciples

  603. suddenly

  604. sees

  605. Jesus

  606. coming

  607. his

  608. way

  609. look

  610. he says

  611. the Lamb

  612. of God

  613. who takes

  614. away the

  615. sin of the

  616. world

  617. the one

  618. who really

  619. does take

  620. it away

  621. there he

  622. is

  623. the one

  624. we've been

  625. waiting

  626. for

  627. the one

  628. Isaac

  629. was asking

  630. about

  631. Jesus

  632. Christ

  633. God's

  634. great

  635. salvation

  636. look to

  637. him

  638. and then

  639. fourth

  640. the frailty

  641. of God's

  642. ways

  643. the frailty

  644. of his

  645. ways

  646. it's not a

  647. great heading

  648. this one

  649. but I hope

  650. you'll get

  651. the sense

  652. of what

  653. it means

  654. it's an

  655. odd little

  656. postscript

  657. to the

  658. chapter

  659. isn't it

  660. verses 20

  661. to 24

  662. don't you

  663. think

  664. Abraham

  665. and Isaac

  666. back in

  667. Beersheba

  668. now

  669. Genesis

  670. 12

  671. what was

  672. one of

  673. the things

  674. God

  675. promised

  676. to

  677. Abraham

  678. I'll

  679. make of

  680. you a

  681. great

  682. nation

  683. he said

  684. it's a

  685. promise

  686. actually

  687. it's

  688. reiterated

  689. it's

  690. underlined

  691. in our

  692. passage

  693. today

  694. verse 17

  695. I'll

  696. surely

  697. bless

  698. you

  699. and I'll

  700. surely

  701. multiply

  702. your

  703. offspring

  704. as the

  705. stars

  706. of heaven

  707. and as

  708. the

  709. sand

  710. that is

  711. on the

  712. seashore

  713. so lots

  714. of people

  715. due to

  716. come from

  717. Abraham's

  718. line

  719. so end

  720. of the

  721. chapter

  722. how's it

  723. going

  724. oh not

  725. brilliant

  726. is it

  727. Abraham

  728. Sarah

  729. and now

  730. Ishmael's

  731. gone

  732. just Isaac

  733. rattling

  734. around

  735. in the

  736. tents

  737. at home

  738. with the

  739. servants

  740. meanwhile

  741. birth

  742. announcement

  743. after birth

  744. announcement

  745. coming from

  746. Nahor's

  747. line

  748. do you

  749. notice

  750. 12 of

  751. them

  752. which even

  753. taking into

  754. account some

  755. help from a

  756. concubine is a

  757. lot of

  758. offspring

  759. you imagine

  760. Sarah

  761. I assume

  762. it fell to

  763. Sarah

  764. trying to

  765. keep track

  766. of all

  767. those

  768. birthdays

  769. birthdays

  770. all those

  771. cousins

  772. birthdays

  773. not a

  774. problem in

  775. our own

  776. household

  777. though

  778. just

  779. Isaac

  780. imagine the

  781. family get

  782. togethers at

  783. Christmas

  784. the piles

  785. of presents

  786. for Nahor's

  787. clan

  788. just the

  789. one in the

  790. corner

  791. Isaac that's

  792. yours

  793. as if to

  794. really rub

  795. in

  796. the great

  797. nation

  798. part of

  799. God's

  800. promise

  801. hasn't yet

  802. come true

  803. come on

  804. Lord you can

  805. imagine Abraham

  806. thinking can't

  807. you

  808. well

  809. the Lord's

  810. people looking

  811. so few

  812. so often

  813. so weak

  814. so frail

  815. compared to

  816. the rest of

  817. the world

  818. and it's a

  819. feeling some

  820. of us know

  821. really well

  822. isn't it

  823. think what it

  824. will be like

  825. tomorrow when

  826. you're back at

  827. school or

  828. dropping off in

  829. the playground

  830. perhaps with

  831. other parents

  832. or at work

  833. or in our

  834. public life at

  835. the moment

  836. or in the

  837. media

  838. it's that

  839. sense of

  840. God's

  841. people seeming

  842. so few

  843. looking so

  844. weak

  845. numerically

  846. I know

  847. this says

  848. but don't

  849. panic

  850. that is

  851. often God's

  852. way

  853. often how

  854. he works

  855. through what

  856. looks small

  857. and frail

  858. so there we

  859. are Genesis

  860. 22 it is an

  861. extraordinary

  862. chapter isn't

  863. it how could

  864. God do this

  865. how could he

  866. put Abraham

  867. through something

  868. like this

  869. how can that

  870. be right

  871. how can that

  872. be fair

  873. it's kind of

  874. hard not to

  875. ask that

  876. question I

  877. vividly remember

  878. the first time

  879. I preached

  880. this passage

  881. for two reasons

  882. actually the

  883. first was it

  884. was a Sunday

  885. evening almost

  886. exactly three

  887. years ago

  888. the last Sunday

  889. evening before

  890. Boris told us

  891. do you remember

  892. you must stay

  893. at home

  894. so in hindsight

  895. such a precious

  896. time that last

  897. Sunday evening

  898. service before

  899. we didn't meet

  900. for a little bit

  901. as a church

  902. and you must

  903. remember that

  904. some of you

  905. even you guys

  906. didn't meet for

  907. a couple of

  908. weeks at least

  909. did you before

  910. things got back

  911. together again

  912. but the second

  913. reason I remember

  914. it so clearly is

  915. because there sat

  916. almost at the

  917. front of church

  918. was a friend of

  919. mine a member

  920. of our church

  921. family who

  922. just a couple of

  923. years earlier

  924. had lost his

  925. own son

  926. completely out

  927. of the blue

  928. 17 years old

  929. started to feel

  930. a bit ill one

  931. evening and a

  932. couple of days

  933. later was dead

  934. and you think

  935. how do you help

  936. a parent who

  937. knows that kind

  938. of pain

  939. in a way that

  940. most of us

  941. don't

  942. how do you

  943. encourage them

  944. to keep trusting

  945. this God

  946. I mentioned

  947. Martin Luther

  948. earlier this

  949. great 16th

  950. century church

  951. leader in

  952. Germany one of

  953. the towering

  954. figures in

  955. church history

  956. and there's

  957. another lovely

  958. story about

  959. Luther in

  960. family devotions

  961. with his

  962. family he

  963. reads Genesis

  964. 22 to them

  965. gets to the

  966. end I do

  967. not believe it

  968. his wife Katie

  969. said perhaps

  970. feeling what

  971. some of us

  972. have been

  973. feeling a bit

  974. this evening

  975. the impression

  976. family devotions

  977. in the Luther

  978. household like

  979. most things in

  980. the Luther

  981. household were

  982. probably quite

  983. plain speaking

  984. affairs most

  985. of the time

  986. I do not

  987. believe it

  988. she said

  989. God would

  990. not have

  991. treated his

  992. son like

  993. that

  994. but Katie

  995. Martin replied

  996. he did

  997. and of course

  998. he did

  999. John 3

  1000. God so

  1001. loved the

  1002. world

  1003. God

  1004. gave his

  1005. only son

  1006. God the

  1007. son sent

  1008. into the

  1009. world by

  1010. God the

  1011. father and

  1012. gladly obeying

  1013. as he came

  1014. to be offered

  1015. in place of

  1016. people like

  1017. you and me

  1018. not to be

  1019. saved from

  1020. death at the

  1021. last moment

  1022. kind of whipped

  1023. away in the

  1024. nick of time

  1025. but given

  1026. completely to

  1027. death

  1028. there at the

  1029. cross the one

  1030. God provided to

  1031. take all the

  1032. judgment people

  1033. like us deserve

  1034. for our sins

  1035. so that that

  1036. blessing that

  1037. God had

  1038. promised and

  1039. promises again in

  1040. this passage

  1041. Genesis 22

  1042. really can come

  1043. flowing into our

  1044. world to turn

  1045. back that curse

  1046. of sin

  1047. how can you

  1048. trust a God

  1049. like this

  1050. his ways are

  1051. so puzzling

  1052. how can I

  1053. trust him

  1054. when his

  1055. commands

  1056. and the

  1057. things he

  1058. allows to

  1059. happen

  1060. sometimes

  1061. seem so

  1062. so hard

  1063. how can

  1064. you when

  1065. his ways

  1066. feel like

  1067. agony as

  1068. well

  1069. because as

  1070. we remember

  1071. again in just

  1072. a moment as

  1073. we share the

  1074. Lord's

  1075. supper

  1076. he gave

  1077. his son

  1078. for you

  1079. and for

  1080. me

  1081. and that

  1082. is why we

  1083. can trust

  1084. him

  1085. let's be

  1086. quiet together

  1087. for a moment

  1088. and then I'll

  1089. pray
