  1. Okay, do sit down and turn to Micah chapter 3.

    Micah 3 chapter mention

  2. Micah chapter 3.

    Micah 3 chapter mention

  3. And I want to preach it in a slightly different way than I'd normally preach it.

  4. ! I think you read chapter 3, it's pretty depressing.

  5. Pretty discouraging.

  6. Very often it's preached, this is what the leaders were like in Micah's day,

  7. this is what the leaders are like today, this is where the state we're in.

  8. But I don't think you need that tonight, I certainly don't.

  9. And so I'm going to start with a quote from the Westminster Confession of Faith.

  10. You should have had this little sheet, which has the same thing on both sides.

  11. Yeah, you'll see that, alright, just to help you.

  12. Alright, here we go.

  13. So, Westminster Confession of Faith, which is a summary of what we believe it's our doctrinal basis,

  14. let me read it to you.

  15. In his eternal purpose, it pleased God to choose and ordain the Lord Jesus Christ.

  16. His only begotten Son, to be the mediator between God and man.

  17. Jesus is the prophet, priest and king, the head and saviour of his church,

  18. the heir of all things and the judge of the world.

  19. Judge of the world.

  20. From all eternity, God gave him, that's the Lord Jesus, a people to be his seed and to be in time redeemed,

  21. called, justified, sanctified and glorified by him.

  22. So, in eternity, God the Father appointed God the Son, the Lord Jesus Christ, to this threefold office.

  23. And then as we read the Old Testament, we'll see that that threefold office, prophet, priest and king,

  24. unfolded and revealed.

  25. So, Adam, do you remember him?

  26. He was the first man, wasn't he?

  27. He is prophet, priest and king.

  28. He's the only person in history to hold all three offices.

  29. But we know, don't we, Adam failed.

  30. He failed in the garden.

  31. And Adam lost his God-given role and lost his calling.

  32. And so, after the fall, as you go through the Old Testament,

  33. no one person held all three offices.

  34. There was a number of faithful saints that held some of them.

  35. So, Moses, he's a king of sorts, isn't he?

  36. As you read the story of Exodus, which you know,

  37. Moses did lots of kingly things.

  38. Lots of things a king would perform.

  39. But he functioned more as a prophet.

  40. He spoke God's words to Pharaoh.

  41. He was a mouthpiece for the people.

  42. Aaron, Moses' brother-in-law, well, he was a priest, wasn't he?

  43. He was a priest for the people of God.

  44. He was the people's representative with God.

  45. He spoke to God on behalf of the people.

  46. And so he held the office of priests.

  47. King David.

  48. He was chiefly a king, wasn't he?

  49. He ruled over Israel.

  50. But we also know David was a bit of a prophet, wasn't he?

  51. The Psalms.

  52. He spoke God's word, proclaimed it.

  53. But there was no one person that was prophet, priest, and king until the Lord Jesus Christ.

  54. In Israel's history, you can see some faithful sketches of what this prophet and priest and king was to be like.

  55. But in Micah chapter 3, as we read it, did you notice?

    Micah 3 chapter mention

  56. The leaders, the family, the leaders of the families, the rulers, the elders who exercised God's rule,

  57. that kingly function,

  58. instead of pointing forward to the Lord Jesus Christ,

  59. these rulers, these kings,

  60. were engrossed in the worst kind of selfishness.

  61. The rulers in Micah chapter 3,

    Micah 3 chapter mention

  62. they engaged in

  63. the kind of

  64. abusing and feeding off

  65. the people.

  66. Instead of

  67. sacrificially loving the people,

  68. they abused them to serve their own wicked

  69. ends and schemes.

  70. And so, what I want us to look at

  71. is really

  72. the prophet, priest, and kingly

  73. aspects of Micah chapter 3.

    Micah 3 chapter mention

  74. And so, I'm starting to think of an illustration.

  75. And the only illustration I can come up with,

  76. you can come up with a better one,

  77. is a photo negative.

  78. Do you remember photo negatives?

  79. You young people and you kids,

  80. you'll have to Google it.

  81. Maybe they can explain it.

  82. But it used to be,

  83. you'd take a photo,

  84. and

  85. you'd have to wind it on,

  86. and then you would take the film out,

  87. and you would go to the chemist,

  88. and you would hand it over to the chemist,

  89. and about a week later,

  90. you would go back to the chemist,

  91. and they would hand you

  92. a packet of photos.

  93. And in the,

  94. and that little packet,

  95. there would be all your photographs,

  96. but they'd also be negatives.

  97. And the negatives were like the opposite,

  98. weren't they?

  99. So you'd hold them up to the light,

  100. and you could see your photo,

  101. but everything was the wrong way around.

  102. It was like inverse.

  103. And so,

  104. if you had somebody with black hair,

  105. in the negative,

  106. it was white hair.

  107. And all the time,

  108. it's kind of the wrong way around.

  109. And there was negatives.

  110. You'd get your pictures,

  111. but you'd get the inverse of the pictures.

  112. Light was dark,

  113. and dark was light.

  114. Light.

  115. And so when they developed those photographs

  116. from that little bit of film,

  117. you would get the positive of the negative.

  118. Okay.

  119. If you're under 30,

  120. you don't understand that illustration,

  121. that's all right, okay?

  122. And if you're under 30,

  123. you're probably bored by it.

  124. Over 30.

  125. But what Micah 3 is,

  126. is it's the negative image

  127. of the person and work of Christ.

  128. I don't know whether you picked it up,

  129. but when you read Micah 3,

  130. everything is evil.

  131. Everything you see is sinful.

  132. But what wonderfully happens

  133. is when you come to the Lord Jesus Christ,

  134. you see the opposite.

  135. You see their sin,

  136. but you see his holiness.

  137. You see their lack of judgment,

  138. but you see his righteousness.

  139. You see their pride,

  140. but you see his humble submission.

  141. So first of all, kings.

  142. The kings.

  143. Remember last week,

  144. we saw the prophet's words of judgment.

  145. He spoke judgment, didn't he, Micah,

  146. so harshly to those who stole

  147. the possession of the land from his people.

  148. They were greedy.

  149. They idolatrously pursued wealth at any cost.

  150. And Micah continues,

  151. but in verse 1 of chapter 3,

  152. can you see it?

  153. He speaks to the heads of Jacob,

  154. to the rulers of the house of Israel.

  155. And he's got them in his sights,

  156. in his crosshairs.

  157. He's dealing with Israel's leaders,

  158. Israel's kingly figures.

  159. And so what were Israel's leaders to be like?

  160. Leaders in the people of God

  161. were to judge with equity.

  162. They were to be righteous and upright.

  163. They were to be fair.

  164. And so in Exodus 18,

  165. you read about Moses' instruction to the people

  166. about how rulers were to conduct themselves.

  167. You are a chosen race,

  168. one Peter tells us.

  169. A royal priesthood.

  170. Holy nation.

  171. A people for his possession.

  172. That's the fulfillment of what Israel's leaders were to be.

  173. They were meant to be upright.

  174. They were supposed to fear God

  175. and hate corruption

  176. and look negatively upon bribes.

  177. But Micah condemned Israel's rulers

  178. because, verse 2,

  179. ultimately they abused their authority.

  180. Look at verse 2.

  181. You who hate the good

  182. and love the evil.

  183. Can you see it?

  184. The rulers were acting, weren't they?

  185. In exactly the opposite way

  186. they were supposed to act.

  187. And the prophet describes them.

  188. I don't know whether he picked it up

  189. in the most gruesome of terms.

  190. He essentially likens them to cannibals.

  191. Look at the second half of verse 2.

  192. You tear the skin from off my people.

  193. It's a horrible image, isn't it?

  194. And their flesh from off their bones.

  195. You eat the flesh of my people

  196. and you flay the skin from them.

  197. That's metaphoric language, I think.

  198. But it's written in such a way

  199. that you notice the brutality

  200. and the wickedness of these rulers.

  201. In other words,

  202. what you have in chapter 2

  203. is wicked developers

  204. stealing the land of the inheritance.

  205. Stealing their possessions.

  206. And so in chapter 2

  207. the people are being badly treated.

  208. They're being ripped off.

  209. And so I suspect what you have is

  210. these people would go to their leaders.

  211. They'd go to court.

  212. And they would say,

  213. this man has wickedly stolen

  214. my inheritance in the land.

  215. And rather than ruling

  216. in accordance with justice

  217. and fairness and truth,

  218. the wicked rulers

  219. would consume the people.

  220. And they would find that

  221. when they went to court,

  222. they would find that the judges

  223. were in cahoots

  224. with the wicked land thieves.

  225. And they would take bribes.

  226. The kind of language,

  227. you give me a cut of the land

  228. and I will rule in your favor.

  229. And so the leaders,

  230. rather than showing love

  231. and care for the people,

  232. instead of presenting them

  233. with a living reflection

  234. of the upright God,

  235. they became essentially

  236. the incarnation of evil.

  237. So think for example

  238. about King Ahab and Jezebel.

  239. Do you remember them?

  240. And when Ahab wanted to buy

  241. Amnaboth's vineyard,

  242. Amnaboth wouldn't sell it.

  243. Do you remember King Ahab?

  244. He sulked.

  245. He became depressed and mourned.

  246. And Jezebel, his wife,

  247. comes to him and says,

  248. well, why is your face downcast?

  249. He tells her.

  250. She says, well,

  251. just leave it to me.

  252. She takes things

  253. into her own hands.

  254. She has two wicked men

  255. accuse Naboth

  256. of blaspheming God.

  257. And because of this,

  258. Naboth is stoned to death

  259. because of these false allegations.

  260. The narrative says

  261. in 1 Kings 2,

    1 Kings 2:11

  262. verse 11,

  263. No, that's not the right verse.

  264. That tells you,

  265. if you want to know

  266. what that is,

  267. that's about the death of David.

  268. That's not right.

  269. But what we find is that

  270. Jezebel,

  271. she contacted the leaders

  272. and she says,

  273. I want you to set up Naboth.

  274. I want you to get the men to lie

  275. so that he can be stoned to death

  276. and can be executed.

  277. I think that's exactly

  278. what's happening

  279. in Micah chapter 3.

    Micah 3 chapter mention

  280. It's the exact kind of conduct

  281. that Micah is condemning.

  282. They conspired together,

  283. didn't they,

  284. Jezebel and the leaders

  285. to consume Naboth

  286. so they could steal his land.

  287. And so Israel's leaders

  288. would face God's judgment

  289. for their sin

  290. as Micah prophesies

  291. in verse 4.

  292. God will carry them away

  293. into exile.

  294. He will not let them

  295. get away with it.

  296. He says,

  297. I mean,

  298. you will cry out to God

  299. but God will not hear you.

  300. But of course,

  301. this judgment

  302. against Israel's leaders

  303. and Israel's kings

  304. must ultimately

  305. cause us to look forward

  306. to the Lord Jesus Christ

  307. who is the Lord of Lords

  308. and the King of Kings.

  309. Because as you think about it,

  310. rather than inflicting

  311. suffering on others,

  312. it was the Lord Jesus

  313. who was afflicted

  314. and suffered.

  315. so that we don't have to

  316. face God's judgment.

  317. Think of this,

  318. it's a world of irony,

  319. isn't it,

  320. that Christ,

  321. the Lord of Lords

  322. and King of Kings

  323. suffered for us

  324. so that we

  325. do not have to suffer

  326. the curses of the law.

  327. When God has got

  328. every right to judge us

  329. alongside Israel's leaders,

  330. instead,

  331. he sends his only begotten son,

  332. Jesus,

  333. to suffer for us.

  334. And here,

  335. these wicked leaders,

  336. do you see what it says?

  337. They were flaying

  338. the skin

  339. of the people of Israel.

  340. Perhaps,

  341. in some cases,

  342. literally so.

  343. People were unjustly

  344. suffering under the rule

  345. of these wicked leaders.

  346. But we know,

  347. don't we,

  348. it was the Lord Jesus

  349. who was flayed

  350. when the Roman authorities

  351. whipped him.

  352. He was brutally beaten.

  353. A crown of thorns

  354. was thrust upon his head

  355. and they mocked him.

  356. Compare him

  357. with these wicked leaders.

  358. One 19th century preacher

  359. said,

  360. Christ took your cup

  361. of grief.

  362. Christ took your cup

  363. of grief,

  364. your cup of curse,

  365. and pressed it

  366. to his lips

  367. and drank it

  368. to its drags.

  369. And then he filled it

  370. with his sweet

  371. pardoning.

  372. Sympathizing love.

  373. And he gives it

  374. back to you

  375. so that you might

  376. drink it forever.

  377. Christ drank

  378. the cup

  379. of the curse

  380. of God's wrath

  381. to its very dregs.

  382. That even though

  383. he was the King of Kings

  384. and Lord of Lords.

  385. What a world

  386. of difference.

  387. And I think what's important

  388. to know here

  389. is that Micah's judgment

  390. against the rulers,

  391. against the kings,

  392. if you will,

  393. ends with Christ.

  394. And we could stop that.

  395. And if we did stop there,

  396. we would see

  397. a beautiful scene

  398. of Christ's suffering

  399. on your behalf.

  400. And yet one of the

  401. great truths

  402. of the Bible

  403. that has been recovered

  404. is this priesthood

  405. of all believers.

  406. So stick with me here.

  407. The fact that

  408. we are united

  409. to Christ,

  410. we share

  411. in everything

  412. that Christ has.

  413. And so,

  414. thus,

  415. as Christ is

  416. prophet,

  417. priest,

  418. and king,

  419. so we who have been

  420. united to Christ

  421. by faith

  422. and have his

  423. indwelling presence

  424. within us,

  425. we too,

  426. as his people,

  427. we share

  428. in that

  429. threefold office.

  430. That threefold office

  431. of prophet,

  432. priest,

  433. and king.

  434. And so that means

  435. all of us have,

  436. as Christians,

  437. have that responsibility

  438. to exercise

  439. that role,

  440. that office.

  441. And so in the light

  442. of this wicked

  443. use of authority

  444. and Christ's

  445. wonderful use

  446. and loving use

  447. of his kingly authority,

  448. we have been

  449. united with Christ.

  450. We're joined to him.

  451. We share

  452. in his kingly office.

  453. We are kings

  454. in Christ.

  455. We're the royal family

  456. tonight.

  457. And so do you see

  458. the authority

  459. that God has

  460. given us

  461. in our lives?

  462. In our positions

  463. of authority

  464. at work

  465. or the home

  466. or in church

  467. or within school?

  468. And so do we

  469. take advantage

  470. of others?

  471. Do we turn

  472. a blind eye

  473. to sin?

  474. Or do we

  475. seek

  476. to show

  477. the curse-bearing

  478. love of Christ

  479. to others?

  480. when the Lord

  481. Jesus tells us

  482. that when we're

  483. struck on the

  484. cheek,

  485. we're not to

  486. retaliate,

  487. but we're to

  488. turn the other

  489. cheek.

  490. And that is

  491. ultimately,

  492. isn't it,

  493. embodying the

  494. loving

  495. but also the

  496. suffering

  497. of Christ.

  498. The love

  499. that Christ

  500. gives to others.

  501. And rather than

  502. seeking justice

  503. and wanting

  504. to strike

  505. that person

  506. and exact

  507. justice

  508. or maybe

  509. even vengeance,

  510. Christ's point

  511. is that we are

  512. willing to turn

  513. the other

  514. cheek

  515. and bear the

  516. penalty

  517. as he bore

  518. the penalty.

  519. I'm not saying

  520. we bear the

  521. penalty in exactly

  522. the same way

  523. Christ did.

  524. Christ bears

  525. the penalty of

  526. a broken law

  527. on our behalf

  528. as an atonement

  529. for sin.

  530. But in our

  531. case,

  532. we turn the

  533. other cheek.

  534. And when we

  535. bear the

  536. penalty,

  537. it's an

  538. expression of

  539. love as

  540. Christ our

  541. King has

  542. condescended

  543. to love us.

  544. And so we

  545. absorb that

  546. pain.

  547. We absorb

  548. the penalty

  549. when we

  550. rightly bring

  551. it to bear

  552. against someone

  553. else when we

  554. turn the

  555. other cheek.

  556. When we

  557. show love

  558. to those who

  559. deserve to be

  560. punished.

  561. When we

  562. show others

  563. the forgiveness

  564. that we

  565. ourselves have

  566. received from

  567. Christ.

  568. That is the

  569. loving nature

  570. of our

  571. King.

  572. That is the

  573. nature of our

  574. King's love

  575. for us.

  576. And so

  577. should we not

  578. extend the

  579. same love

  580. to others

  581. that we've

  582. received from

  583. Christ?

  584. Or will we

  585. look like

  586. Israel's leaders

  587. who flayed

  588. the people,

  589. chopped them

  590. into bits,

  591. threw them

  592. into the pot

  593. so that they

  594. could take

  595. advantage of

  596. them?

  597. That brings

  598. us to our

  599. second point.

  600. prophets.

  601. In Israel,

  602. part of the

  603. duty of the

  604. prophets was

  605. to hold the

  606. kings in

  607. check.

  608. As I think,

  609. for example,

  610. of the

  611. prophet Elijah,

  612. the prophet

  613. Elijah again

  614. and again,

  615. he goes to

  616. Ahab and

  617. Jezebel,

  618. he holds

  619. them accountable

  620. for their

  621. sin.

  622. So much so

  623. that Ahab

  624. and Jezebel,

  625. they hated

  626. him because

  627. he was

  628. continually

  629. calling them

  630. to account

  631. for their

  632. wickedness.

  633. And the

  634. prophets

  635. should have

  636. held the

  637. kings to

  638. account.

  639. They should

  640. have held

  641. the kings

  642. in check.

  643. But can you

  644. see what the

  645. prophets of

  646. Micah's day,

  647. instead of

  648. holding them

  649. in check,

  650. instead of

  651. bringing them

  652. to account,

  653. instead of

  654. bringing the

  655. law of God

  656. to bear on

  657. their ruling,

  658. do you see

  659. what they did?

  660. They joined

  661. in the

  662. feeding frenzy.

  663. The prophets

  664. preach a false

  665. message and

  666. they say,

  667. there's peace

  668. so long as

  669. their mouths

  670. were filled.

  671. Do you see

  672. that in verse

  673. five?

  674. But if their

  675. mouths weren't

  676. filled,

  677. they would

  678. complain.

  679. they would

  680. use their

  681. office against

  682. those who

  683. they were

  684. supposed to

  685. protect and

  686. love.

  687. And so for

  688. this, God

  689. will judge

  690. them.

  691. Look at

  692. verse six.

  693. Therefore

  694. it should be

  695. night to

  696. you without

  697. vision and

  698. darkness to

  699. you without

  700. divination.

  701. The sun

  702. shall go down

  703. on the

  704. prophets and

  705. the day

  706. shall be

  707. black over

  708. them.

  709. The seers

  710. shall be

  711. disgraced and

  712. the diviners

  713. put to

  714. shame.

  715. And they

  716. shall all

  717. cover their

  718. lips.

  719. The tool

  720. of their

  721. trades for

  722. there is

  723. no answer

  724. from God.

  725. God

  726. essentially

  727. says,

  728. you want

  729. lies?

  730. You want

  731. to claim

  732. to speak

  733. in my

  734. name?

  735. Well, I've

  736. not given

  737. you this

  738. message, the

  739. message of

  740. falsehood.

  741. And so I'll

  742. cover you in

  743. darkness.

  744. I won't give

  745. you any

  746. revelations.

  747. I'm not

  748. going to give

  749. you any

  750. messages.

  751. You'll cry

  752. out to me, but

  753. I will not

  754. respond.

  755. And I will

  756. put you into

  757. darkness.

  758. And once

  759. again, I

  760. think we can

  761. see, can't

  762. we, that the

  763. negative in

  764. the false

  765. prophets, in

  766. the Lord

  767. Jesus, we

  768. see the

  769. positive.

  770. The exact

  771. opposite.

  772. What was the

  773. Lord Jesus

  774. Christ?

  775. He was the

  776. truth incarnate.

  777. He always

  778. spoke the

  779. truth, no

  780. matter what

  781. the cost.

  782. Christ.

  783. And I

  784. think we

  785. can see a

  786. positive

  787. picture of

  788. the Lord

  789. Jesus

  790. Christ.

  791. Look at

  792. verse 8.

  793. I love

  794. verse 8.

  795. But as

  796. for me, I

  797. am filled

  798. with power,

  799. with the

  800. Spirit of

  801. the Lord,

  802. and with

  803. justice and

  804. might, to

  805. declare to

  806. Jacob his

  807. transgression,

  808. and to

  809. Israel his

  810. sin.

  811. God's

  812. sin.

  813. I cannot

  814. imagine the

  815. courage that

  816. it would have

  817. taken for

  818. Micah to

  819. speak against

  820. the status

  821. quo.

  822. To level his

  823. words of God's

  824. truth against

  825. the power.

  826. To speak truth to

  827. power is very,

  828. very, to speak

  829. truth to your

  830. friend is not

  831. enough, but to

  832. speak truth to

  833. power like

  834. this.

  835. To level his

  836. words of God's

  837. truth against the

  838. power that they

  839. held.

  840. They held all of

  841. this power, and

  842. yet he speaks

  843. boldly to them.

  844. And I think we

  845. see, don't we,

  846. here, just a

  847. faint positive

  848. picture of the

  849. Lord Jesus

  850. Christ, who was

  851. himself willing

  852. to stand up to

  853. authority of his

  854. day, to speak the

  855. truth to them

  856. regardless of the

  857. consequences, even

  858. when it led him to

  859. death, to the

  860. crucifixion.

  861. Do you see, the

  862. Father poured out

  863. his Spirit on

  864. Christ, for him

  865. to be able to

  866. carry out his

  867. prophetic ministry?

  868. And so, join

  869. with me in

  870. question 31.

  871. Can you see the

  872. Heidelberg Catechism?

  873. It's another one of

  874. the summaries of

  875. our faith.

  876. And let me ask

  877. you the question,

  878. verse 31, you'll

  879. respond with the

  880. answer, why is he

  881. called Christ that

  882. is anointed?

  883. So why is he

  884. called Christ that

  885. is anointed?

  886. Let's say it

  887. together.

  888. because he has

  889. been ordained by

  890. God the Father

  891. and anointed with

  892. the Holy Spirit

  893. to be our chief

  894. prophet and

  895. teacher, who has

  896. fully revealed to

  897. us the secret

  898. counsel and will

  899. of God concerning

  900. our redemption,

  901. our only high

  902. priest, who by the

  903. one sacrifice of

  904. his body has

  905. redeemed us and

  906. who continually

  907. intercedes for us

  908. before the Father

  909. and our eternal

  910. King, who governs

  911. us by his word

  912. and spirit and

  913. who defends and

  914. preserves us in

  915. the redemption

  916. obtained for us.

  917. And so far from

  918. kind of aiding and

  919. abetting the

  920. cannibalistic

  921. frenzy of

  922. Israel's rulers,

  923. Jesus speaks and

  924. he continues to

  925. speak to us,

  926. truth as he

  927. feeds us from

  928. heaven.

  929. In fact, the

  930. Bible says Jesus

  931. is the manna from

  932. heaven.

  933. The Bible tells us

  934. that he feeds

  935. us.

  936. That's what Jesus

  937. meant in the

  938. Sermon on the

  939. Mount.

  940. Blessed are those

  941. who hunger and

  942. thirst for

  943. righteousness, for

  944. they shall be

  945. satisfied.

  946. And so here, in

  947. Micah's day, the

  948. prophets are aiding

  949. and abetting the

  950. feeding upon the

  951. people.

  952. And in the Lord

  953. Jesus, he says,

  954. I will not feed

  955. upon you, I

  956. will feed you.

  957. My word will be

  958. food to you and

  959. you will be

  960. satisfied.

  961. But remember,

  962. that is fulfilled

  963. in Christ.

  964. But as we

  965. looked at with

  966. the kingly

  967. office of

  968. Christ, how

  969. does this

  970. apply to us?

  971. Given our

  972. union with

  973. Christ, how do

  974. we exercise our

  975. part in this

  976. prophetic office?

  977. Well, do we

  978. speak truth to

  979. those around us

  980. in love?

  981. If you're

  982. anything like

  983. me, you

  984. often cower

  985. from speaking

  986. the truth.

  987. Whether that's

  988. being too

  989. afraid of

  990. speaking the

  991. truth of the

  992. gospel to an

  993. unbeliever.

  994. Perhaps when we

  995. hear things being

  996. said that ought

  997. not to be said,

  998. it's really easy,

  999. isn't it, to

  1000. speak with a

  1001. child and say,

  1002. don't say that.

  1003. But when it's a

  1004. friend, when it's

  1005. a peer,

  1006. we can often

  1007. be terrified of

  1008. speaking the

  1009. truth.

  1010. It's one of the

  1011. things we need to

  1012. drum into our

  1013. children, isn't

  1014. it?

  1015. So children,

  1016. teenagers, just

  1017. listen for a

  1018. minute.

  1019. Do not, do

1020. not, do not be a

  1021. people pleaser.

  1022. That's one of the

  1023. things the Bible

  1024. drums into you.

1025. All of us want to

  1026. be liked, don't we?

  1027. Desperate to be

  1028. liked.

  1029. None of us wants

1030. to be a pariah to

  1031. stick out.

  1032. And yet, for

  1033. every one of us,

  1034. for your parents,

  1035. for each one of

  1036. us, it requires

  1037. us to speak the

  1038. truth.

  1039. To earn some of

  1040. the disrespect of

  1041. the people around

  1042. us.

  1043. Even if it means

  1044. we lose a friend,

  1045. to be willing to

  1046. speak the truth.

  1047. It's my great

  1048. prayer for you as

  1049. children, I mean

  1050. young people, that

  1051. you'll be willing to

  1052. speak the truth.

  1053. To earn that

  1054. disrespect.

  1055. Because that is

  1056. part of the

  1057. prophetic office

  1058. we've been given.

  1059. That we're willing

  1060. to speak the

  1061. truth to power.

  1062. Willing to

  1063. suffer for the

  1064. sake of the

  1065. truth, for the

  1066. sake of the

  1067. gospel.

  1068. You might say

  1069. to me, those

  1070. adults who are

  1071. here, well I

  1072. wouldn't want to

  1073. risk losing my

  1074. job, losing my

  1075. income.

  1076. So we're quiet.

  1077. And we're

  1078. silent.

  1079. Or we shade and

  1080. darken the truth

  1081. just like the

  1082. devil in the

  1083. garden of Eden.

  1084. He shaded the

  1085. truth to me.

  1086. And Satan did

  1087. that in tempting

  1088. Christ.

  1089. Shaded the

  1090. truth.

  1091. And this

  1092. office of being

  1093. a prophet, do

  1094. we speak words of

  1095. truth and life to

  1096. our spouses, to

  1097. our friends?

  1098. When I get to

  1099. heaven, I want to

  1100. ask the apostle

  1101. Paul about when

  1102. he speaks in

  1103. Galatians, about

  1104. the church in

  1105. Galatia biting

  1106. one another so

  1107. that they devour

  1108. one another.

  1109. I think he's

  1110. got Micah 3 in

  1111. his mind.

  1112. I think he's

  1113. pulling that

  1114. language from

  1115. Micah 3.

  1116. And so it's

  1117. terribly sad,

  1118. isn't it?

  1119. In church life,

  1120. we can devour

  1121. one another.

  1122. And it

  1123. shouldn't be so.

  1124. We speak the

  1125. truth, but we

  1126. do so in

  1127. love and

  1128. kindness and

  1129. humility.

  1130. And as we

  1131. do that, we

  1132. share in

  1133. Christ's prophetic

  1134. office.

  1135. Lastly, the

  1136. priests.

  1137. Micah returns

  1138. and he brings

  1139. more words of

  1140. judgment against

  1141. Israel's leader.

  1142. Look at

  1143. verse 11.

  1144. He rebukes

  1145. them for their

  1146. willingness to

  1147. have bloodshed

  1148. and to take

  1149. bribes.

  1150. Verse 11.

  1151. Its heads

  1152. give judgment

  1153. for a bribe.

  1154. Its priests

  1155. teach for a

  1156. price.

  1157. Its prophets

  1158. practice divination

  1159. for money.

  1160. Yet they

  1161. lean on the

  1162. Lord and

  1163. say, it's

  1164. not the

  1165. Lord in

  1166. the midst

  1167. of us.

  1168. No disaster

  1169. shall come

  1170. upon us.

  1171. They're hired

  1172. guns.

  1173. They're

  1174. mercenaries.

  1175. Conference

  1176. speakers.

  1177. What do you

  1178. need me to

  1179. prophesy to you

  1180. about?

  1181. And I'll do

  1182. so for a

  1183. price.

  1184. What do you

  1185. need me to

  1186. preach on?

  1187. And I'll

  1188. preach on it.

  1189. You want to

  1190. hear a comforting

  1191. message of

  1192. salvation even

  1193. though you're

  1194. wicked, even

  1195. though you're

  1196. crooked?

  1197. Well, for

  1198. the right

  1199. place, I

  1200. can do

  1201. it.

  1202. I'll

  1203. preach to

  1204. you the

  1205. message that

  1206. you want

  1207. me to

  1208. hear.

  1209. And rather

  1210. than relying on

  1211. the sacrifices

  1212. for their

  1213. income in

  1214. accordance with

  1215. the God's

  1216. law, they

  1217. were essentially

  1218. saying, I'm

  1219. going to take

  1220. everything from

  1221. you.

  1222. Think of

  1223. Eli's sons

  1224. regularly ripping

  1225. off the people,

  1226. so much so that

  1227. they become obese.

  1228. Instead of

  1229. serving as the

  1230. representatives of

  1231. the people to

  1232. bring sacrifice to

  1233. God for their

  1234. sins,

  1235. they milk the

  1236. people for

  1237. profit.

  1238. And what is

  1239. terribly sad is

  1240. I think ultimately

  1241. these people

  1242. thought that their

  1243. actions, it would

  1244. only affect

  1245. themselves.

  1246. I'm just

  1247. getting some

  1248. money for

  1249. myself, I'm

  1250. just looking out

  1251. for me, but

  1252. what happened in

  1253. Old Testament

  1254. Israel is when

  1255. the priests

  1256. stop serving

  1257. their God-given

  1258. function, it

  1259. means that the

  1260. sacrifices aren't

  1261. offered, which

  1262. means that the

  1263. sins of the

  1264. people pile up,

  1265. which means that

  1266. God will

  1267. eventually have

  1268. to kick

  1269. them out of

  1270. the land

  1271. into exile.

  1272. Their

  1273. wickedness would

  1274. boil over into

  1275. the land and

  1276. essentially be one

  1277. of the chief

  1278. reasons for their

  1279. exile from the

  1280. land.

  1281. And once again,

  1282. we see again,

  1283. don't we, Jesus is

  1284. the exact opposite.

  1285. Look at that

  1286. question 31 that

  1287. you read out for

  1288. me, just look how

  1289. brilliant it is.

  1290. Look what it says.

  1291. He's been anointed

  1292. with the Holy Spirit

  1293. to be our chief

  1294. prophet and

  1295. teacher who has

  1296. fully revealed to

  1297. us the secret

  1298. counsel and will

  1299. of God concerning

  1300. our redemption and

  1301. our only high

  1302. priest who by the

  1303. one sacrifice of

  1304. his body has

  1305. redeemed us and

  1306. continually intercedes

  1307. for us before the

  1308. Father.

  1309. He who was rich

  1310. became poor for

  1311. our sake.

  1312. He stepped away

  1313. from his throne and

  1314. entered into this

  1315. veil of tears and

  1316. was obedient even

  1317. to the point of

  1318. death.

  1319. And so far from

  1320. trying to milk you

  1321. for financial gain,

  1322. he laid aside

  1323. everything that was

  1324. rightly his so that

  1325. you might rightly

  1326. have everything that

  1327. was his.

  1328. And so who

  1329. delivered up Judas

  1330. to die, Spurgeon

  1331. asks.

  1332. Not Judas for money,

  1333. not Pilate for fear,

  1334. not Jews for envy,

  1335. but the triune God

  1336. for love.

  1337. And Christ laid

  1338. down his life as

  1339. priest out of love

  1340. for you.

  1341. What manner of love

  1342. is this, that we

  1343. should be called

  1344. children of God?

  1345. When we were by

  1346. nature children of

  1347. wrath, Christ

  1348. loved us.

  1349. When we were his

  1350. enemies, Christ

  1351. died for us.

  1352. So how do we,

  1353. as those who are

  1354. united to Christ

1355. in him, how do we

  1356. exercise our

  1357. priestly duties?

1358. Do we rest in the

  1359. power of the

  1360. gospel which enables

  1361. us to pray and

  1362. intercede for others

  1363. as Christ intercedes

  1364. for us?

  1365. I think all too

1366. often if I look at

  1367. myself, I'm so

  1368. concerned with my

  1369. own needs, instead

  1370. of looking to the

  1371. needs of others.

  1372. And we need to

  1373. recognize, don't we,

  1374. our priestly office

  1375. gives us the

  1376. privilege of

  1377. interceding for

  1378. others, and it's

  1379. not a part-time

  1380. job, it's not

  1381. something that we're

  1382. called to do from

  1383. time to time.

  1384. No, Christ's

  1385. priestly office is

  1386. meant to characterize

  1387. all our lives.

  1388. It's not a part-time

  1389. job to be a

  1390. priest, it's a

  1391. full-time calling.

  1392. So Romans 12

    Romans 12:1

  1393. verse 1,

  1394. I appeal to you

  1395. brothers by the

  1396. mercies of God,

  1397. here's the priestly

  1398. language, to present

  1399. your bodies as a

  1400. living sacrifice,

  1401. holy and acceptable

  1402. to God, which is

  1403. your spiritual

  1404. worship.

  1405. Our priestly

  1406. identity in

  1407. Christ, our

  1408. union with him

  1409. should mark the

  1410. entirety of our

  1411. lives.

  1412. Jesus describes

  1413. your life as

  1414. what?

  1415. Take up your

  1416. cross and follow

  1417. me.

  1418. And our lives

  1419. throughout every

  1420. element should be

  1421. marked by a

  1422. sacrificial love for

  1423. others.

  1424. Christ.

  1425. And so as I

  1426. understand how the

  1427. priests in

  1428. Micah failed and

  1429. how Christ

  1430. wonderfully is the

  1431. perfect priest and

  1432. how I am a

  1433. priest in Christ,

1434. I need to pray that

  1435. the triune God

  1436. would break the

  1437. fortress of my

  1438. heart.

  1439. And that I would

  1440. lay down my

  1441. selfishness.

  1442. and I'd be willing

  1443. to even lay down

  1444. those things which I

  1445. have a legitimate

  1446. right.

  1447. And that I and

  1448. we as a church

  1449. family would be

  1450. enabled to pour out

  1451. our lives as a

  1452. drink offering,

  1453. all for his glory

  1454. and the benefit and

  1455. love of our

  1456. neighbours and our

  1457. families.

  1458. For the benefit and

  1459. blessing of our

  1460. church members.

1461. I hope that as you

  1462. read Micah chapter

  1463. three, maybe before

1464. you go to bed or

1465. maybe as you get up

  1466. tomorrow morning,

1467. and as you reflect on

  1468. Micah's harsh words of

  1469. judgment, I hope that

1470. you will be able to

  1471. see against the

  1472. wicked backdrop of

  1473. sin and darkness how

  1474. brilliant and how

  1475. beautifully the

  1476. person and work of

  1477. Christ shine.

  1478. And that this week

  1479. you would meditate on

  1480. Christ's faithful work as

  1481. your true prophet and

  1482. your true priest and

  1483. your true king and

  1484. you would give thanks

1485. for his work on your

  1486. behalf.

  1487. That you'd give thanks

1488. for him as a faithful

  1489. prophet who has always

1490. spoken the truth to us.

  1491. That truth which has

  1492. brought us salvation and

1493. you'd give thanks to him

1494. as a loving priest that he

1495. has laid down his life as

1496. a sacrifice so that you

1497. would not have to suffer

1498. the curse of God's law.

1499. And that you would give

1500. thanks to him as a king

1501. who laid down his rule

  1502. to rule in humility.

1503. To give us a rule that

  1504. we don't deserve.

1505. But I also hope that you

1506. will pray this week that

  1507. Christ's threefold work

1508. would sink deep down into

1509. the depths of your heart.

1510. That God would rain his

  1511. spirit down upon this

1512. truth and it would produce

1513. great fruit in your lives.

1514. And so I want to close

  1515. with the words of

  1516. Heidelberg Catechism

  1517. chapter 30, question 32.

  1518. It's a beautiful question

  1519. on, that follows Christ's

  1520. threefold work.

1521. And it asks this question,

  1522. it asks the question,

1523. why are you called a

  1524. Christian?

1525. And you need to understand

  1526. that the word Christian

  1527. doesn't just mean a

  1528. follower of Christ.

1529. That's how we often say,

  1530. isn't it?

  1531. What is a Christian?

  1532. It's somebody who

  1533. follows Christ.

1534. But what does Christ mean?

  1535. It means anointed one.

1536. And so would you respond

  1537. with the answer,

1538. why are you called a

  1539. Christian?

  1540. Because I am a member

  1541. of Christ by faith

1542. and thus share in his

1543. anointing so that I may

1544. as a prophet confess his

1545. name, as a priest present

  1546. myself, a living sacrifice

  1547. of thankfulness to him

1548. and as king fight with a

  1549. free and good conscience

1550. against sin and the devil

  1551. in this life.

1552. And hereafter reign with him

  1553. eternally of all creatures.

  1554. Let's pray.

  1555. Amen.

  1556. Amen.
