  1. I'll turn to you at Micah 4 and 5.

  2. I should have said next Saturday is the big church clean.

  3. !

  4. Doesn't it?

  5. That God is about to turn the lights out.

  6. He's about to shut the door.

  7. Here it is pretty bleak.

  8. Israel's kind of lowest point.

  9. And into that context you get this remarkable promise.

  10. This remarkable prophecy in chapter 5.

  11. Into this bleak scenario of judgment.

  12. Down on the nation.

  13. God gives a promise.

  14. Sennacherib is going to come right up to the door of Jerusalem.

  15. Jerusalem is besieged.

  16. And in that very bleak and blackness.

  17. God gives this promise of a royal ruler.

  18. A royal ruler who will bring in God's righteous rule.

  19. And not just in Israel and in Judah.

  20. But it will spread throughout the whole of the world.

  21. We get the leaders we deserve don't we?

  22. That's been our experience as a country the last kind of 10 years.

  23. We get the leaders we deserve when we turn away from God.

  24. But what Micah 4 and 5 tell us is that God is going to send a leader in his grace that we don't deserve.

  25. We know don't we?

  26. Standing this side of the New Testament.

  27. That person is Jesus.

  28. And I want to call him God's once and future king.

  29. God's once and future king.

  30. Who is going to bring in God's now and not yet kingdom.

  31. Are the two things I want us to think about.

  32. He is God's once and future king.

  33. Who will bring in God's now and not yet kingdom.

  34. He is the royal ruler.

  35. Who will bring in God's judgment throughout the whole world.

  36. And he is God's once and future king.

  37. Who is going to bring in God's now and not yet kingdom.

  38. Look what it says in verse 2 of chapter 5.

  39. You know this because you'll have heard it in Christmas carol service readings.

  40. But you, O Bethlehem, Ephrathah, who are too little to be among the clans of Judah.

  41. From you shall come forth for me one who is to be a ruler in Israel.

  42. Whose coming forth is from of old, from ancient days.

  43. See that mention of Bethlehem?

  44. That little town that's hardly on the map.

  45. There are two Bethlehems.

  46. That's why it differentiates.

  47. That's why it says there is Bethlehem Ephrathah.

  48. He's saying make sure you get the right Bethlehem.

  49. Make sure you go to the right place.

  50. It's a tiny little township.

  51. Five or six miles outside of Jerusalem.

  52. And the mention of Bethlehem has a kind of ominous ring to it.

  53. Because the birth of the Messiah takes place in Bethlehem.

  54. A suburb outside of Jerusalem.

  55. Not in the heart of the city of David where you'd expect.

  56. It supposes, doesn't it?

  57. It gives you and I a hint.

  58. Why is he born outside the city?

  59. Not right in the center of the city.

  60. It's supposing to us that the family of David, they'll no longer be in the position of power.

  61. They'll no longer be on the throne in Jerusalem.

  62. They'll have fallen into poverty.

  63. It's as if the quest for the coming king which the world needs has got to go all the way back to the stump of Jesse.

  64. It's no longer a great oak.

  65. It's no longer a great tree.

  66. It's just a stump.

  67. And so this little township of Bethlehem.

  68. There'll be no royal starter kit still available in Jerusalem.

  69. The Davidic dynasty will have been cut off.

  70. But out of Bethlehem, this little place outside Jerusalem will come God's once and future king.

  71. Who will bring in God's now and not yet kingdom.

  72. And so let's look at the now and not yet kingdom first.

  73. That's the order in which these verses come in chapter 4.

  74. There are no chapters and verses in the original which make it a little bit difficult to kind of divide up.

  75. And we're meant to see the contrast between the end of chapter 3 and the start of chapter 4.

  76. And so look at the end of chapter 3.

  77. Jerusalem, well Zion, God's city.

  78. The kind of apple of God's eye is going to be ploughed like a field.

  79. Jerusalem will become a heap of ruins.

  80. And the mountain of the house, it'll become like a wooded height.

  81. Just think of that.

  82. The temple mound, it's overgrown with weeds.

  83. There's moss growing on the rubble.

  84. But in the last days, verse 4,

  85. it shall come to pass in the latter days,

  86. that the mountain of the Lord will be established.

  87. The mountain of the house of the Lord shall be established as the highest of the mountains.

  88. It's picture language, isn't it?

  89. It's saying to you, this mountain is going to grow.

  90. It's going to grow to the highest mountain there is.

  91. And so one minute, he says at the end of chapter 3,

  92. it'll be overgrown with brambles.

  93. It'll be a complete mess.

  94. It'll be a heap of ruins.

  95. But the next minute, it's going to be raised.

  96. And so that not only the peoples of Israel,

  97. but all the nations of the world will stream to it.

  98. And what is this all about?

  99. Well, notice that little phrase.

  100. Can you see it in verse 1 of chapter 4?

  101. It's in the latter days.

  102. This kingdom that is going to come, Micah is saying,

  103. it's not for now,

  104. it's for the future.

  105. It sounds too good to be true.

  106. Out of the ruins,

  107. out of the ruins,

  108. God is actually going to build

  109. an international,

  110. universal,

  111. supernatural kingdom.

  112. I mean it.

  113. Just look at what it sounds like.

  114. Look what it says, isn't it?

  115. It tells us, isn't it,

  116. in Micah 4,

  117. that swords will be beaten into plowshares.

  118. Spears into pruning hooks.

  119. They're not going to study war no more.

  120. Their famous verses,

  121. politicians often quote it without realizing.

  122. Martin Luther King put them in a famous speech,

  123. didn't he?

  124. He used this imagery.

  125. Swords and spears.

  126. Farming imagery.

  127. And so tanks will be turned into tractors,

  128. Micah's saying.

  129. Bombs will be turned into bailers.

  130. Missiles will be turned into milking parlors.

  131. He's saying there's a beautiful picture coming of a new world.

  132. If you've seen Lord of the Rings, isn't it?

  133. The great battles.

  134. And the battles of Middle Earth.

  135. And the end of the film,

  136. it ends with them in the shire

  137. and everything's beautiful.

  138. That's the picture.

  139. That's why Tolkien got it from him anyways.

  140. There'll be no more military academies,

  141. no more terrorist training camps.

  142. All will be shut down

  143. because it will be a world

  144. that we will all want to see.

  145. It's universal.

  146. It's international.

  147. But it's also individual.

  148. Can you look at verse 4?

  149. In verse 4,

  150. Because they shall sit every man

  151. under his vine and under his fig tree.

  152. And no one shall make them afraid.

  153. It's a picture of security

  154. where people will be unafraid.

  155. You'll leave the locks unlocked.

  156. The doors unlocked at night.

  157. And all the nations will be there

  158. and every man will sit under his own fig tree.

  159. Not only that,

  160. but the peoples will come streaming up to this.

  161. You ever seen a river going up the mountain?

  162. Streams don't usually go up mountains, do they?

  163. They don't.

  164. But here's a picture, isn't it?

  165. The mic is giving you

  166. of a temple mountain of Jerusalem.

  167. And the temple mountain is being raised

  168. higher than all the mountains of the earth.

  169. And the nations are streaming towards it.

  170. And so you can go to central London.

  171. You can go to New York.

  172. You can go to Sydney.

  173. You can go to Beijing.

  174. And you see this beginning to happen.

  175. You see it now, today, on the Lord's Day.

  176. There's a not yet about it,

  177. but it's not happening, isn't it?

  178. This morning, during the hymns,

  179. I tried to count how many nationalities

  180. are in the church.

  181. I got to about 40 this morning.

  182. I think, when you include the people

  183. that aren't here,

  184. it's about 45 nationalities now.

  185. In this little congregation in West London.

  186. This is what God is doing.

  187. Now, there's a not yet about it,

  188. but there is a now too, isn't there?

  189. You see it in the beginnings of John chapter 12.

    John 12 chapter mention

  190. And this kingdom, there were some Greeks

  191. that came to Jesus,

  192. and they came with a request.

  193. They came to Philip of Bethsaida.

  194. They were up in Jerusalem for a visit,

  195. these Greeks.

  196. And they come to Philip,

  197. and they say,

  198. Sir, we wish to see Jesus.

  199. We would like to see Jesus.

  200. It's a great message for preachers, isn't it?

  201. John Stott, when he was given that

  202. weird lectern at all souls,

  203. engraved on it,

  204. is saying,

  205. Sir, we wish to see Jesus.

  206. It should be the message of every serpent.

  207. And Philip goes to Andrew.

  208. Andrew then goes to Jesus.

  209. And it's interesting how Jesus responds

  210. to this request,

  211. Sir, we wish to see Jesus.

  212. And Jesus replies to this,

  213. to these Greeks.

  214. He says,

  215. The hour has come for the Son of Man

  216. to be glorified.

  217. Truly, truly, I say to you,

  218. unless a grain of wheat

  219. falls into the earth and dies,

  220. it remains alone.

  221. But if it dies,

  222. it bears much fruit.

  223. And then Jesus goes on

  224. to speak about his death,

  225. and he says this.

  226. He says,

  227. Now is the judgment of this world.

  228. Now will the rule of this world

  229. be cast out.

  230. And I, when I'm lifted up from the earth,

  231. will draw all men to myself.

  232. And he said this,

  233. John says,

  234. to show what kind of death

  235. he was going to die.

  236. Do you see the point?

  237. It's the beginning of it.

  238. This is the beginning of the now

  239. and the not yet kingdom.

  240. That is the basis

  241. on which the kingdom of God

  242. is going to be established.

  243. The death on the cross

  244. of the Lord Jesus Christ.

  245. And I am lifted up,

  246. he says,

  247. with arms outstretched

  248. on the cross,

  249. and I will draw all men to myself.

  250. He's talking about people

  251. from every tribe and tongue

  252. and nation, isn't he?

  253. All peoples to him.

  254. And so,

  255. even as we sit in church

  256. this evening,

  257. we sit here tonight

  258. and the nations,

  259. they are streaming up the mountain.

  260. All around the world,

  261. hundreds of thousands of people

  262. are becoming Christians

  263. in places like Africa,

  264. in Southern America,

  265. in China,

  266. places like that.

  267. It's not happening very much

  268. in the UK,

  269. but it is happening.

  270. And who would have thought

  271. that from that little obscure

  272. little place

  273. that isn't even really

  274. on the map,

  275. Bethlehem of Ephrathah,

  276. and this son

  277. of a carpenter

  278. who grew up in Nazareth,

  279. can anything good

  280. come out of Nazareth?

  281. But out of Nazareth

  282. has come God's ruler,

  283. this once and future king.

  284. And the nations

  285. are streaming to him.

  286. It's now

  287. and it's not yet.

  288. Let me just give you

  289. another example of that

  290. in the Old Testament,

  291. Matthew 24.

  292. Listen to what Jesus says there

  293. when he talks very much

  294. about the kind of thing

  295. that you see

  296. in Micah in Matthew 24.

  297. Jesus says to him,

  298. he's warning his disciples

  299. and he says,

  300. see to it that no one

  301. leads you astray,

  302. no one takes you captive,

  303. for many will come in my name

  304. and they'll say,

  305. I am the Christ

  306. and they'll lead many people astray

  307. and you'll hear of wars

  308. and rumors of wars.

  309. That's the not yet,

  310. isn't it?

  311. That is still the studying of war.

  312. That is nation rising

  313. against nation,

  314. Jesus says.

  315. Such things must happen

  316. before the end comes.

  317. And then he says,

  318. this gospel of the kingdom

  319. will be preached

  320. to all nations.

  321. It'll be proclaimed

  322. throughout the whole world

  323. as a testimony

  324. to all nations.

  325. And then he says,

  326. the end will come.

  327. You see,

  328. they haven't beaten

  329. their swords

  330. into plowshares yet.

  331. There's still,

  332. isn't there,

  333. today,

  334. nation rising up

  335. against nation.

  336. There are wars

  337. and there are rumors

  338. of wars.

  339. That is the world

  340. we live in

  341. on a micro

  342. and a macro level.

  343. But in this world

  344. right now,

  345. in the ruins

  346. of the fall,

  347. God is building

  348. his kingdom.

  349. And God is bringing

  350. in his kingdom

  351. through Jesus.

  352. And that good news

  353. of the kingdom of God

  354. is to be preached

  355. throughout the world

  356. and it is preached

  357. as it is preached,

  358. as Jesus is lifted up,

  359. the nations gather

  360. to Jesus.

  361. And it is happening.

  362. It's not a fairy story.

  363. The kingdom of God

  364. is now

  365. that it is not yet.

  366. See what I'm trying

  367. to say.

  368. But there's another

  369. side to this now

  370. and not yet kingdom.

  371. You see it in the second

  372. half of chapter 4

  373. and chapter 5.

  374. Let me read you

  375. from verse 10

  376. of chapter 5.

  377. In that day,

  378. looking forward,

  379. declares the Lord,

  380. I will cut off

  381. your horses

  382. from among you

  383. and I will destroy

  384. your chariots.

  385. I'll cut off

  386. the cities of your land,

  387. I'll throw down

  388. all your strongholds

  389. and I will cut off

  390. sorceries from your hand

  391. and you shall have

  392. no more tellers

  393. of fortunes

  394. and I will cut off,

  395. do you see the cut off,

  396. cut off, cut off

  397. your carved images

  398. and your pillars

  399. from among you

  400. and you shall bow down

  401. no more to the work

  402. of your hands

  403. and I will root out

  404. your Asherah images

  405. from among you.

  406. Destroy your cities

  407. and in anger

  408. and in wrath

  409. I will execute

  410. vengeance on the nations

  411. that did not obey.

  412. Why is that?

  413. What is that?

  414. It's the other side

  415. of this kingdom.

  416. The utter destruction

  417. of God's enemies,

  418. everything that opposes him.

  419. And so you better make sure

  420. that that's not you.

  421. Every entity,

  422. every ology,

  423. every institution,

  424. every individual

  425. that stands in opposition

  426. to God

  427. will ultimately be destroyed.

  428. Look at verses 11 to 13

  429. of chapter 4.

  430. Now many nations

  431. are assembled against you.

  432. Sing,

  433. let her be defiled

  434. and let our eyes gaze

  435. upon Zion

  436. but they do not know

  437. the thoughts of the Lord.

  438. They do not understand

  439. his plan

  440. that he has gathered them

  441. as sheaves

  442. to the threshing floor.

  443. Arise and thrash

  444. your daughter of Zion.

  445. For I will make

  446. your horn iron

  447. and I will make

  448. your hooves bronze

  449. and you shall beat

  450. in pieces many peoples

  451. and should devote

  452. their gain to the Lord,

  453. their wealth to the Lord

  454. of the whole earth.

  455. It's difficult,

  456. I found it difficult

  457. this week to get inside

  458. the language of

  459. Micah 4 and 5

  460. and probably you're

  461. finding that

  462. like I am.

  463. But what it's saying

  464. to you is this,

  465. it's saying to you

  466. every pocket of resistance

  467. against the Lord

  468. will be removed.

  469. That chap wasn't there,

  470. he died in the late 90s

  471. and he lived

  472. in the jungle

  473. of Guam.

  474. He couldn't accept

  475. that the battle

  476. had been lost,

  477. he couldn't accept

  478. that the war

  479. had been lost

  480. so he stayed

  481. in the jungle of Guam.

  482. He refused to accept it,

  483. eventually he was discovered

  484. and brought out.

  485. It wasn't just that

  486. he didn't know

  487. that the war was over,

  488. he did know

  489. that the war was over,

  490. he just wouldn't accept

  491. that the war was over.

  492. He wouldn't accept

  493. that it was over,

  494. that it was game over.

  495. It's game over

  496. if you're opposed to Christ.

  497. And you say,

  498. well that's so Old Testament

  499. again, isn't it?

  500. That's all very,

  501. very Old Testament

  502. but listen to Jesus,

  503. Jesus in Matthew 13,

  504. the parable of the weeds.

  505. Just as the weeds

  506. are gathered

  507. and burned with fire,

  508. so will it be

  509. at the end of the age.

  510. The Son of Man

  511. will send his angels

  512. and they will gather

  513. out of his kingdom

  514. all causes of sin

  515. and all lawbreakers

  516. and throw them

  517. into the fiery furnace

  518. and in that place

  519. there will be weeping

  520. and gnashing of teeth

  521. and then the righteous

  522. will shine like the sun

  523. in the kingdom

  524. of their father.

  525. He who is ears,

  526. let him hear.

  527. And so can you see

  528. God's righteous rule

  529. will not be established

  530. until everything

  531. that opposes him

  532. is rooted out

  533. and destroyed.

  534. When God puts out

  535. the rubbish,

  536. make sure you're not

  537. in the bin.

  538. Paul tells us,

  539. doesn't it,

  540. in Romans chapter 8

    Romans 8 chapter mention

  541. that the carnal heart,

  542. the sinful mind

  543. is enmity against God.

  544. Enmity,

  545. it is war against God.

  546. That is natural human nature.

  547. It is hostile to God.

  548. And you don't go around

  549. dealing with a placard

  550. saying,

  551. I hate God.

  552. I hate God.

  553. You wouldn't do that,

  554. would you?

  555. You're far,

  556. you're far too civilized

  557. to do that.

  558. But you can live,

  559. can't you?

  560. Like I can live

  561. in God's world

  562. like a sullen teenager

  563. under the roof

  564. of his parents

  565. taking everything

  566. for granted,

  567. living my own

  568. selfish little life

  569. pleasing myself.

  570. I'm totally oblivious

  571. to the God

  572. who's created you

  573. and provided for you

  574. and given you a purpose.

  575. You're an enemy of his.

  576. And you might come to church

  577. but if you've got

  578. an unconverted heart

  579. and an unregenerate heart,

  580. you are at war with God.

  581. And the day will come

  582. when it will be game over

  583. for you.

  584. Now how do we know

  585. that this is going to happen?

  586. Because of this great promise.

  587. Because of something

  588. in these chapters

  589. we just can't ignore.

  590. Something that we can't overlook,

  591. this marvelous prophecy

  592. about Jesus

  593. that God is going to

  594. actually send

  595. from Bethlehem

  596. out of Bethlehem,

  597. he's going to send

  598. his once and future king.

  599. Look at how he's described

  600. in verse 2 of chapter 5.

  601. But you, O Bethlehem of Fratha,

  602. who are too little

  603. to be among the clans of Judah,

  604. from you shall come forth

  605. from me,

  606. one who is to be ruler

  607. in Israel,

  608. whose coming forth

  609. is from of old,

  610. from ancient days,

  611. whose origins

  612. are from of old,

  613. from ancient times.

  614. That is God's

  615. once and future king.

  616. It's the stuff, isn't it,

  617. that fairy tales

  618. are made of.

  619. Those are the words,

  620. aren't they,

  621. at the end of verse 21,

  622. that according to the legend

  623. are written on the tomb

  624. of King Arthur,

  625. the ancient king.

  626. The legend is that

  627. he will come back,

  628. won't he?

  629. He'll come back

  630. and he'll free the Welsh

  631. from the English.

  632. That's another story.

  633. But on his tomb,

  634. supposedly lies,

  635. here lies Arthur,

  636. the once and future king.

  637. It's really interesting

  638. with fairy stories,

  639. isn't it?

  640. Fairy stories don't go

  641. out of fashion.

  642. You would think they would.

  643. Fairy stories,

  644. they kind of make

  645. a comeback,

  646. don't they?

  647. They go through

  648. different generations.

  649. Now you've got beauty

  650. and the geek.

  651. But fairy stories

  652. don't die out.

  653. Why don't fairy stories

  654. die out?

  655. Why do fairy stories

  656. have such a powerful

  657. resonance with us?

  658. Why have they got

  659. a hold on us?

  660. C.S. Lewis

  661. and J.R. Tolkien,

  662. the guy who wrote

  663. Lord of the Rings,

  664. they had a famous

  665. discussion on this

  666. before Lewis

  667. became a Christian.

  668. Lewis believed

  669. very much in the myths

  670. and of legends,

  671. but there's a kind of

  672. famous conversation

  673. before he was converted

  674. where he explains

  675. to Tolkien

  676. that he felt

  677. the power of myths

  678. but ultimately

  679. they were untrue.

  680. That's how he put it.

  681. Myths are lies

  682. even though they are

  683. lies breathed

  684. through silver.

  685. Tolkien said,

  686. no, you're wrong.

  687. You're wrong,

  688. they're not.

  689. Tolkien argued

  690. that far from being lies,

  691. these myths and legends,

  692. they pointed to a deeper truth.

  693. That's right.

  694. The fairy stories

  695. that we were taught,

  696. they point to an

  697. underlying reality.

  698. They've got something

  699. in common,

  700. isn't it?

  701. I think Glenn Scrivener

  702. did some work on this

  703. a few years ago.

  704. You can look at it

  705. on YouTube.

  706. The fairy stories,

  707. they point to an

  708. underlying reality

  709. that this world

  710. is under the sway

  711. of the devil.

  712. The prince of this world,

  713. he keeps the minds

  714. of those who don't

  715. believe in Jesus.

  716. He keeps them in darkness.

  717. The whole world

  718. lies in darkness.

  719. That's the reality.

  720. And then along comes

  721. the dragon slayer

  722. to usher in the golden age.

  723. That's the reality.

  724. And this is who the ruler is.

  725. And the myths

  726. are just shadows of that

  727. pointing forward

  728. to the greater story.

  729. Fairy stories

  730. point us to the true story.

  731. The underlying reality,

  732. which is

  733. in our passage this morning,

  734. this evening,

  735. that he who is from of old,

  736. he who was in eternity,

  737. the one who was with God

  738. and the one who was God,

  739. the one who walked with Adam

  740. in the cool of the day,

  741. the one who spoke with Abraham,

  742. the one who wrestled with Jacob,

  743. the one who appeared to Moses

  744. in the burning bush,

  745. the one who led the people

  746. through the wilderness

  747. into the promised land.

  748. That one who is from of old,

  749. from ancient days,

  750. is God's once and future king.

  751. Out of you,

  752. Bethlehem of Fratha,

  753. will come a ruler

  754. who is going to usher in

  755. this incredible kingdom,

  756. this universal kingdom,

  757. this international kingdom.

  758. God's righteous reign.

  759. Look at verse 4.

  760. What's he going to be like?

  761. He shall stand and shepherd his flock

  762. in the strength of the Lord.

  763. In the majesty of the name

  764. of the Lord his God,

  765. and they shall dwell secure.

  766. For now he shall be great

  767. to the ends of the earth.

  768. No more wolves.

  769. No more wars.

  770. No more predators,

  771. because God is going to raise up

  772. a shepherd king

  773. that is promised at the end

  774. of chapter 2.

  775. The shepherd king

  776. who will gather his people

  777. and protect them

  778. and usher in God's righteous rule.

  779. Let me try and round this up.

  780. Let's go back to the slap.

  781. Let's go back to the slap

  782. of chapter 5 in verse 1.

  783. Can you hear the slap?

  784. Must be your troops.

  785. O daughter of troops,

  786. the siege is laid against us.

  787. With a rod they strike.

  788. The judge of Israel on the cheek.

  789. Will they?

  790. Well actually it never happened.

  791. Never happened.

  792. It didn't happen in Micah's time.

  793. It did in Jesus' time,

  794. but never to Hezekiah,

  795. the king during Micah's reign,

  796. Micah's time.

  797. They did slap Jesus across the face,

  798. didn't they?

  799. But they never slapped King Hezekiah.

  800. And Jeremiah tells us why.

  801. I showed you this a few weeks ago,

  802. but in Jeremiah 26,

  803. it's about 100 years after the event,

  804. and Jeremiah is telling what happened

  805. in the time of Micah.

  806. This is what he says in Jeremiah 26,

  807. and verse 18,

  808. he says,

  809. tells us that this prophet,

  810. this preacher, Micah,

  811. he turned up.

  812. A spirit anointed preacher.

  813. And he told all the people of Judah.

  814. He says,

  815. did Hezekiah king of Judah,

  816. and all Judah put him to death?

  817. Did they kill Micah?

  818. Did he not fear the Lord,

  819. and entreat the favor of the Lord,

  820. and did not the Lord relent of the disaster

  821. that he pronounced against them?

  822. That's what happened.

  823. It wasn't actually king,

  824. it wasn't Sennacherib,

  825. who ransacked Jerusalem to disaster.

  826. It didn't happen at the time of Micah.

  827. It was Nebuchadnezzar who came hundreds of years ago,

  828. and wrecked Jerusalem.

  829. It wasn't the Assyrians,

  830. it was the Babylonians.

  831. Because when Micah preached,

  832. when Micah prophesied,

  833. Hezekiah,

  834. the king,

  835. heard the message of God.

  836. He heard about God's once and future king.

  837. He heard about this now and not yet kingdom,

  838. and he broke his heart,

  839. and he repented.

  840. Micah chapter 3, verse 8.

    Micah 3:8

  841. I've not been able to escape this verse this week.

  842. Micah chapter 3, verse 8.

    Micah 3:8

  843. I love this verse,

  844. but as for me,

  845. there's a picture there of the loneliness

  846. of the Old Testament preacher

  847. in an apostate nation.

  848. He could have joined others,

  849. he could have preached a popular message,

  850. he could have gone on the conference circuit in America,

  851. but he says,

  852. as for me,

  853. as for me,

  854. listen to what he says.

  855. He says,

  856. I'm filled with power,

  857. with the Spirit of the Lord,

  858. with justice and might,

  859. to declare to Jacob his transgression,

  860. and to Israel his sin.

  861. He says,

  862. as for me,

  863. I can't preach what you want me to preach.

  864. I can't give you what you want to hear.

  865. I'm not free to do that.

  866. And so here is a man,

  867. the prophet Micah,

  868. who's controlled by the Spirit of God,

  869. by the Spirit of Jesus.

  870. The Spirit that proceeds from the Father and the Son.

  871. Do you remember what Jesus said?

  872. He said,

  873. when the Spirit comes,

  874. what will the Spirit do when the Spirit is poured out?

  875. What will he do?

  876. He'll convict the world of sin and judgment and righteousness.

  877. That's what these chapters are about in Micah,

  878. aren't they?

  879. As Micah stood up,

  880. he must have been one of the most unpopular men of his day.

  881. And when Micah stood up,

  882. as for me,

  883. and the Spirit of God took hold of him,

  884. and the Spirit of Jesus,

  885. God's righteous ruler,

  886. the Spirit of Jesus comes into King Hezekiah's court.

  887. Because Hezekiah was one of those corrupt rulers

  888. that we heard about last week in chapter 3.

  889. And the Spirit of Jesus comes through the preaching of Micah

  890. into the very throne room of God,

  891. and Hezekiah repents.

  892. He's convicted of sin.

  893. And the Holy Spirit,

  894. through this preacher,

  895. Micah,

  896. paints this beautiful picture

  897. of what God's righteous and loving rule looks like.

  898. And he says,

  899. the kingdom that all humanity longs for

  900. is found in God's once and forever King.

  901. And we think it'll never happen,

  902. but Micah gives us a vision of God's righteousness.

  903. And through the Spirit-anointed preaching of Micah,

  904. Hezekiah gets a taste of judgment to come.

  905. And he's warned, isn't he,

  906. that if God's King is going to come,

  907. every kingdom opposed to it will be crushed.

  908. And so Hezekiah repents.

  909. He repents.

  910. And revival.

  911. Revival comes to Judah.

  912. You can read about it in the historical books.

  913. Same thing that happened in Nineveh, isn't it?

  914. Jonah's a much more popular,

  915. much more well-known story.

  916. And Jonah comes to Nineveh,

  917. and he calls on them to repent.

  918. And they did, and there was repentance.

  919. Right from the king's palace,

  920. down to the streets of Nineveh.

  921. And God relented,

  922. and God saved a pagan nation.

  923. And I think that's what London needs, isn't it?

  924. God needs Spirit-anointed preaching

  925. about Jesus to convict the world of sin.

  926. To give a vision of this now and not yet king.

  927. To warn people that if you do not get into this kingdom

  928. through faith in Jesus Christ,

  929. you will be utterly devastated.

  930. And so let me ask you,

  931. who's your ruler?

  932. Who's your ruler?

  933. We get the rulers we deserve.

  934. But God is promising through Micah 4 and 5,

  935. a ruler that you don't deserve.

  936. Is he your ruler?

  937. I read a lovely little story about Martin Luther.

  938. Martin Luther had a friend called Philip Malanthon.

  939. They were both reformers.

  940. Luther was just full, boisterous,

  941. not particularly sensitive.

  942. Melanthon was gentle,

  943. timid.

  944. Luther didn't suffer from anxiety.

  945. He probably could have done with suffering

  946. from a bit more anxiety.

  947. But Melanthon really suffered from anxiety,

  948. worried.

  949. He used to have panic attacks.

  950. Not that they were called that back then.

  951. He worried about everything.

  952. And the story goes that Luther came,

  953. and he would put his hands on Philip's shoulders

  954. and he would say to him,

  955. let Philip cease to rule the world.

  956. Let Philip cease to rule the world.

  957. That's all I want to say to you tonight.

  958. Some of us are chronic worriers, aren't they?

  959. I am a worrier.

  960. I think I know how the universe has got to work.

  961. I think I know how history is going to play out.

  962. I think I know how life has got to happen

  963. for me and for us.

  964. No, I don't.

  965. Stop pretending that I rule the world

  966. and hand it over to the Lord Jesus

  967. and let him rule.

  968. Let him rule the universe.

  969. Let him rule your world.

  970. Let him rock your world.

  971. Because he will bring in his now and not yet kingdom.

  972. Who's going to make the nations study war no more?

  973. Who's going to make the nations

  974. to beat their swords into plowshares?

  975. As politicians,

  976. we know that's not going to happen.

  977. Only Jesus can do that.

  978. And he will only do it

  979. through his spirit-empowered preaching

  980. of the gospel.

  981. Let's pray.

  982. Let's pray.

  983. Let's pray.

  984. pray.
