  1. Well, it'd be great if you could have your Bibles open at Isaiah chapter 6.

    Isaiah 6 chapter mention

  2. And as you're turning there, let me just say thank you for having me today.

  3. It's been a real joy to be with you and to be able to preach and see your faces.

  4. And we will be praying for you in London City Presbyterian Church.

  5. We are so thankful for our partnership in the gospel,

  6. for the connections that we have with this congregation.

  7. And we're so glad that we are in this together.

  8. And it's been a real joy just to worship with brothers and sisters in Christ in London.

  9. Especially for me.

  10. So thank you for today.

  11. Well, I want to get going this evening with a question.

  12. And the question is this.

  13. Can you remember the last time you were awestruck at something in life?

  14. When was the last time something caused your jaw to drop, your eyes to pop out your head?

  15. When was the last time you gasped in amazement?

  16. Or you were stunned into silence at something you beheld?

  17. The last time I was left awestruck happened just last year.

  18. It was a Sunday evening.

  19. I had just finished preaching in London City Pres.

  20. And along with three other friends from the congregation,

  21. we decided that we would go and join the really, really, really long queue

  22. to see the Queen lying in state at Westminster Hall.

  23. We rushed out of church, sprinted across Tower Bridge,

  24. and we managed to find the back of the queue.

  25. And we were among the last to join before the queue closed.

  26. It was 7 p.m.

  27. And we queued for nine and a half long hours.

  28. And then at 4.30 a.m. on Monday morning,

  29. we wearily wandered in to Westminster Hall.

  30. And I suspect some of you may have done the same.

  31. But as for as long as I live,

  32. and I'm no diehard royalist in that sense,

  33. but as for as long as I live,

  34. I will never forget the scene that greeted us that morning.

  35. We walked into this room,

  36. pregnant with ancient history.

  37. And there in the middle of it

  38. was the longest reigning monarch

  39. of Great Britain and the Commonwealth.

  40. A coffin just seven foot.

  41. But there was something that left me awestruck.

  42. When you had to fall past it,

  43. you had to look up.

  44. She was raised in a plinth,

  45. and there was the royal standard.

  46. There was the imperial crown

  47. with its 3,000 diamonds,

  48. with its 300 perils,

  49. with its emeralds and rubies

  50. just glistening, dazzling, mesmerizing.

  51. There was a scepter and the orb

  52. propped up on top of the coffin.

  53. I just can't put it into words,

  54. but it will be for me

  55. one of the most memorable experiences

  56. I've ever had.

  57. And I had to remind myself,

  58. Andy, this is just a dead monarch.

  59. But even still,

  60. as I stood in front of a coffin

  61. with the remains of our late queen,

  62. I couldn't but stand in awe and respect.

  63. We'll contrast that

  64. with the prophet Isaiah's experience

  65. when he wandered into the temple,

  66. and he was given a glimpse,

  67. not of a dead monarch,

  68. but of a living,

  69. the living and glorious king of glory.

  70. Tonight, I want us,

  71. my prayer for us

  72. is that we would be left awestruck

  73. at the sight of the glory of God.

  74. That tonight we would be stunned

  75. into silence at the grace of God.

  76. That we would gasp in amazement

  77. as our glorious king

  78. invites us into service of Him.

  79. Let's just pray and ask for God's help

  80. as we come to this passage.

  81. God, we pray that you would open up our eyes

  82. as we've opened up your word.

  83. We pray that you would turn up the volume

  84. of the Holy Spirit speaking tonight.

  85. We pray that as we come

  86. to behold you afresh in your word,

  87. that we would see you for who you are.

  88. And that as we leave here this evening,

  89. we would leave transformed

  90. as a result of this life-changing vision.

  91. We pray this in your son's glorious

  92. and precious name.

  93. Amen.

  94. What we have in Isaiah chapter 6

    Isaiah 6 chapter mention

  95. is the occasion when Israel's young,

  96. pious prophet went up to the temple

  97. to worship God,

  98. but he did not come back out

  99. the same way he went in.

  100. There in the temple,

  101. Isaiah had a life-transforming vision

  102. of who God is.

  103. And we've got four points

  104. we're going to consider this text with.

  105. God, because Isaiah receives

  106. a vision of who God is.

  107. Guilt, because in light of who God is

  108. he becomes overcome

  109. with his sinfulness and guilt.

  110. Grace, because there in the presence of God

  111. he experiences the amazing forgiveness

  112. that God offers.

  113. And finally, gratitude,

  114. because Isaiah responds

  115. with a heart filled with thankfulness.

  116. God, guilt, grace, gratitude.

  117. Verse 1.

  118. In the year that King Uzziah died,

  119. I saw the Lord.

  120. Isaiah's opening statement

  121. dates this experience to 740 BC.

  122. It also informs us that he had this vision

  123. at a timely moment in his own personal life

  124. as a prophet

  125. and for the nation as a whole.

  126. 2022 will go down in the history books

  127. as the end of the second Elizabethan age.

  128. It will go down in the history books

  129. as the end of an era.

  130. It will go down in the history books

  131. because it will probably be

  132. the last time there will be

  133. such widespread mourning

  134. in our nation over one individual.

  135. You can well imagine

  136. that the day when Isaiah

  137. walked up to the temple,

  138. that sad situation

  139. that had overcome the nation of Israel,

  140. the passing of King Uzziah,

  141. overwhelmed him and burdened him.

  142. He was God's prophet for the people.

  143. King Uzziah,

  144. just like our late queen,

  145. had been one of the longest reigning

  146. monarchs of Israel.

  147. 52 years.

  148. For most of his reign,

  149. it was a time of peace

  150. and prosperity.

  151. It was the end of an age.

  152. And so picture Isaiah walking up

  153. to the temple with a heavy heart,

  154. but don't you just love God's timing

  155. when Israel's throne was vacant,

  156. God gave Isaiah a vision

  157. of heaven's throne occupied.

  158. When everything fell out of control

  159. in the nation,

  160. God gave Isaiah a vision

  161. of the one who was in complete control.

  162. The one who was gloriously

  163. working his purposes out

  164. for his people.

  165. I don't know what's going on

  166. in your personal life.

  167. I don't know what's going on

  168. in this congregation's life.

  169. I do know what's going on

  170. in the world

  171. from what we read in the headlines,

  172. but our world feels out of control.

  173. And so maybe it's a timely vision for us,

  174. it's a timely moment for us

  175. to get a fresh vision

  176. of who God is.

  177. The first thing that Isaiah saw,

  178. we read in the year

  179. that King Uzziah died,

  180. I saw the Lord

  181. sitting upon a throne,

  182. high and lifted up.

  183. Note God's position

  184. to reflect the fact

  185. that He is the preeminent one,

  186. the supreme one,

  187. the most high one,

  188. the exalted one.

  189. When you went to see

  190. the queen lying in state,

  191. our coffin,

  192. they had really raised her up

  193. in a plinth,

  194. so you really had to look up.

  195. It was befitting.

  196. She was worthy of honor.

  197. She was worthy of our respect.

  198. But here,

  199. we can only wonder

  200. how high Isaiah had to lift his head.

  201. because he saw the one

  202. who sits enthroned

  203. above the circle of the earth,

  204. the most high,

  205. the one above all powers,

  206. all authorities,

  207. all dominions.

  208. I don't know about you,

  209. but for myself,

  210. one of the problems I suffer from

  211. is spiritual amnesia.

  212. Constantly forgetting

  213. how glorious God is.

  214. I suffer from this problem

  215. that when I forget who He is,

  216. I'm tempted to reduce Him

  217. down to a size

  218. where I'm comfortable with Him,

  219. where I try and fit Him

  220. into my life

  221. instead of realizing

  222. that my life fits

  223. into His purposes.

  224. I need to be reminded

  225. of just how great

  226. and glorious God is,

  227. and that is where

  228. this vision begins.

  229. Isaiah saw the Lord

  230. sitting on His throne

  231. high and lifted up.

  232. And then he goes on

  233. and he says

  234. he saw the train of His robe

  235. and it filled the temple.

  236. For the young ones,

  237. you might be studying history

  238. at school,

  239. you might remember

  240. that in history

  241. that we're taught

  242. about the ancient kings,

  243. whether it's in Babylon,

  244. Mesopotamia,

  245. that the greatness of a king

  246. would be reflected,

  247. demonstrated,

  248. showcased in the length

  249. of the train of His robe.

  250. The greater a king,

  251. the longer the robe.

  252. The more victories he had

  253. over his opposing kingdoms,

  254. the more they would increase

  255. the size of his robe.

  256. Well, here's Isaiah.

  257. He catches a glimpse of God

  258. and we read

  259. that he saw

  260. that the train of His robe

  261. filled the temple.

  262. In the Hebrew,

  263. the idea is he saw

  264. the hem of His garment,

  265. just the outer edge.

  266. And it filled the temple.

  267. And the point is

  268. how overwhelming

  269. God is in His greatness.

  270. How much more there was

  271. to God that Isaiah couldn't see.

  272. He just saw the very edge,

  273. but it filled the temple.

  274. God's far more glorious

  275. and greater than you and I

  276. have ever dared to imagine.

  277. vision.

  278. We need our eyes open

  279. to this sheer overwhelming

  280. vision of who God is.

  281. Again, I don't know about you,

  282. but in my spiritual life,

  283. whether it's I wake up in the morning

  284. and I check the headlines

  285. on my phone,

  286. or whether I just wake up

  287. with all the worries

  288. of the day or the week ahead,

  289. I can find that they fill

  290. the vision of my mind and heart.

  291. And the one who should loom

  292. the largest in my mind and heart

  293. doesn't.

  294. Well, here Isaiah's vision

  295. of who God is

  296. calls us afresh

  297. to see that God

  298. ought to loom large

  299. in our minds,

  300. hearts, and souls

  301. because He truly is

  302. far greater than we've ever dared

  303. to imagine.

  304. Now, Isaiah's vision

  305. of who God is

  306. deepens with what happens next

  307. because He gets a glimpse

  308. of these creatures

  309. called seraphim.

  310. The only time we ever read

  311. about these creatures

  312. is here.

  313. In the Hebrew,

  314. the word seraphim

  315. at its root

  316. literally means to burn.

  317. These are burning,

  318. fiery creatures

  319. created by God

  320. to dwell in the

  321. holy presence of God.

  322. We're told about

  323. these seraphim

  324. they've got six wings.

  325. With two,

  326. they covered their feet.

  327. With two,

  328. they flew.

  329. And with two,

  330. they covered their face.

  331. Think about this.

  332. These creatures

  333. created by God

  334. holy and sinless

  335. to live in His presence

  336. have to cover their face.

  337. Such is the dazzling intensity

  338. of the beauty

  339. of God's holiness.

  340. With two,

  341. they cover their feet.

  342. Such is their awareness

  343. that in the presence of God,

  344. they are on holy ground

  345. and they are unworthy

  346. to be in His presence.

  347. With two,

  348. they flew.

  349. Such is their awareness

  350. that they were created

  351. by God

  352. to do His bidding

  353. at any moment

  354. to be His heavenly messengers,

  355. to carry out His will.

  356. You know,

  357. when you're young,

  358. your parents tell you,

  359. don't look at the sun.

  360. You can't look at the sun.

  361. These holy creatures

  362. made to live

  363. in God's presence,

  364. made to do God's bidding,

  365. could not look

  366. in the face

  367. of their maker

  368. and king.

  369. strange,

  370. but when I was

  371. looking at the Queen's Coughing

  372. with the Imperial Crown,

  373. it was mesmerizing,

  374. but you know

  375. when something's overwhelming

  376. in its beauty

  377. and its power,

  378. it's dazzling,

  379. you can't

  380. linger long.

  381. You have to look away.

  382. The posture of these seraphim

  383. is significant

  384. because

  385. in just a moment

  386. we're going to see

  387. their posture reflected

  388. in Isaiah.

  389. So get this,

  390. as we think of the Lord

  391. high and lifted up,

  392. the train of His robe

  393. filling the temple,

  394. we've got these seraphim

  395. who surround them,

  396. who shield their faces,

  397. who are ready to serve,

  398. but then notice

  399. that we are told

  400. that in verse 3,

  401. one called to another

  402. and said,

  403. Holy,

  404. Holy,

  405. Holy

  406. is the Lord of hosts,

  407. the Lord of angel armies,

  408. the whole earth

  409. is full

  410. of

  411. His

  412. glory.

  413. These angels

  414. sing to one another

  415. about the

  416. extraordinary

  417. nature of God.

  418. And they sing

  419. in antiphonal praise.

  420. One says,

  421. Holy,

  422. another one says,

  423. Holy back,

  424. another one says,

  425. Holy back,

  426. the Lord

  427. of hosts.

  428. The whole earth

  429. is full

  430. of His

  431. glory.

  432. It's the only time

  433. in the Bible,

  434. here in Isaiah

  435. and then in Revelation,

  436. that we read

  437. of any of God's attributes

  438. repeated three times

  439. and it's

  440. His holiness.

  441. It is a

  442. supersuperlative.

  443. In Hebrew,

  444. you want to make a point,

  445. you'll say something

  446. is the best

  447. of the best,

  448. you'll say

  449. King of kings

  450. or Lord of lords

  451. or songs of songs.

  452. You repeat something

  453. three times

  454. and it's in a category

  455. altogether

  456. of its own.

  457. It is set apart,

  458. it is separate,

  459. it is the purpose

  460. of saying that God

  461. is holy,

  462. He is in a class

  463. all of

  464. His

  465. own.

  466. I don't know

  467. what you think of

  468. when you think of

  469. the holiness of God

  470. but listen to

  471. A.W. Tozer.

  472. We cannot grasp

  473. the true meaning

  474. of the divine holiness

  475. by thinking of someone

  476. or something

  477. very pure

  478. and then raising

  479. the concept

  480. to the highest degree

  481. we're capable of.

  482. God's holiness

  483. is not simply

  484. the best we know

  485. infinitely bettered,

  486. it stands apart,

  487. unique,

  488. unapproached,

  489. incomprehensible

  490. and unattainable.

  491. The natural man

  492. is blind to it.

  493. He may fear

  494. God's power,

  495. admire God's wisdom

  496. but His holiness

  497. he cannot

  498. even

  499. begin

  500. to imagine.

  501. God's holiness

  502. is truly

  503. extraordinary.

  504. You know what else

  505. it is?

  506. It's also

  507. truly thrilling.

  508. these fiery creatures

  509. burned to the very

  510. bottom of their being

  511. in delightful praise

  512. of God

  513. in all of His holiness.

  514. We sing about

  515. what we delight in.

  516. We sing love songs

  517. because we love

  518. love and lovers.

  519. We sing about

  520. our favorite football teams.

  521. Here these angels

  522. sing about

  523. their glorious God

  524. because they delight

  525. in Him.

  526. I want you to notice

  527. that in response

  528. to the singing

  529. of God's holiness

  530. we read in verse 4

  531. and the foundations

  532. of the thresholds

  533. shook at the voice

  534. of Him

  535. who called

  536. and the house

  537. was filled

  538. with smoke.

  539. Anytime you read

  540. about God

  541. being worshipped

  542. in the splendor

  543. of His holiness

  544. like in Psalm 96

  545. you'll read

  546. that the nations

  547. tremble,

  548. the earth shakes.

  549. Brothers and sisters

  550. as we catch

  551. a glimpse

  552. of God

  553. and His holiness

  554. in this vision

  555. we should be shaken

  556. to the core

  557. of our being.

  558. Let me be really honest

  559. with you.

  560. My life

  561. is marked

  562. by callous worship

  563. careless living

  564. compromised godliness

  565. and casualness

  566. in my Christianity

  567. and passivity

  568. in my service

  569. when I have lost sight

  570. of God

  571. and His holiness.

  572. Amen.

  573. And so as we

  574. enter the temple

  575. as it were

  576. and see this vision

  577. we're being called

  578. back to who God is.

  579. Now our first point

  580. is the longest point.

  581. Isaiah gets this vision

  582. of who God is.

  583. Well now we come

  584. to our second point.

  585. After seeing God

  586. for who He is

  587. Isaiah comes

  588. to see himself

  589. for who He is.

  590. There's no

  591. coincidence

  592. that John Calvin's

  593. Institutes of the Christian Religion

  594. is split into two books.

  595. knowledge of God

  596. and knowledge of self.

  597. When you get a knowledge

  598. of who God is

  599. you will come to a true discovery

  600. of who you are.

  601. I don't know if any of you

  602. like watching

  603. crime scene

  604. crime dramas

  605. you know

  606. CSI

  607. NCIS

  608. you know

  609. you know those moments

  610. when you're watching them

  611. and there's a crime scene

  612. but they go into

  613. it's a home

  614. or it's a

  615. it's a bit of a car

  616. and they open it up

  617. and it just looks

  618. pristine clean

  619. perfect

  620. and then they turn off

  621. the lights

  622. and then they put up

  623. their UV lights

  624. their ultraviolet lights

  625. and they turn them on

  626. and this room

  627. that you thought

  628. was perfectly clean

  629. is revealed

  630. under the ultraviolet lights

  631. to be filthy

  632. and dirty

  633. there's blood everywhere

  634. there's bodily fluids

  635. here there and everywhere

  636. there's fingerprints

  637. it's a crime scene.

  638. Well here's Isaiah

  639. this young pious prophet

  640. he comes into

  641. the presence of God

  642. and under the x-ray

  643. gaze of God

  644. he has exposed

  645. to him

  646. his sinfulness

  647. you know

  648. one of the things

  649. that can happen

  650. we come to church

  651. right

  652. and some of us

  653. dress up

  654. we put on our

  655. Sunday bed

  656. we give the impression

  657. to those around us

  658. that we're good

  659. we're doing well

  660. and yet

  661. if you want to be

  662. exposed for who

  663. you truly are

  664. just come into

  665. the presence of God

  666. it's here we discover

  667. our true sinfulness

  668. remember

  669. what was Isaiah's

  670. calling as a prophet

  671. he was given

  672. the task

  673. to speak the word

  674. of God

  675. to the people

  676. of God

  677. what is it

  678. he becomes

  679. overcome with

  680. verse 5

  681. woe is me

  682. for I am lost

  683. for I am a man

  684. of unclean lips

  685. this is a man

  686. whose calling

  687. is to preach

  688. the word of God

  689. and he realizes

  690. that under the x-ray

  691. gaze of God

  692. his mouth

  693. is filthy

  694. he is disgusting

  695. he's dirty

  696. he's guilty

  697. he dwells

  698. in the midst

  699. of a people

  700. of unclean lips

  701. maybe there's

  702. that connection

  703. that out of the

  704. overflow

  705. of our hearts

  706. what's truly

  707. in our hearts

  708. it manifests

  709. in our mouths

  710. as Jesus said

  711. notice why

  712. he is so

  713. overcome with his

  714. guilt

  715. for my eyes

  716. have seen

  717. the king

  718. the lord of hosts

  719. you know

  720. one thing

  721. that I think

  722. contributed

  723. to my

  724. me being awestruck

  725. in the presence

  726. of the

  727. of the queen

  728. in Westminster Hall

  729. is I probably

  730. had never been

  731. that close

  732. to someone

  733. in human terms

  734. was that great

  735. I realized

  736. that there was

  737. a distinction

  738. between me

  739. and her

  740. everything

  741. she had guards

  742. protecting her coffin

  743. the flag

  744. the crown

  745. the scepter

  746. the orb

  747. all of it

  748. she's in a

  749. different category

  750. in that sense

  751. and that is

  752. what overcomes

  753. Isaiah

  754. this sense

  755. that he's

  756. in the presence

  757. of his king

  758. he is the

  759. created

  760. and this

  761. one is

  762. his creator

  763. and what

  764. he becomes

  765. most conscious

  766. of that he

  767. confesses in

  768. God's presence

  769. is his

  770. filthiness

  771. his uncleanness

  772. he feels so

  773. utterly

  774. exposed

  775. before the

  776. blazing holiness

  777. of the Lord

  778. but here's the

  779. wonderful thing

  780. our God

  781. reveals himself

  782. and reveals

  783. Isaiah

  784. to himself

  785. not because

  786. he wants to

  787. condemn him

  788. or destroy him

  789. but because he

  790. wants

  791. to

  792. redeem him

  793. God

  794. guilt

  795. grace

  796. then one

  797. of the

  798. seraphs

  799. seraphim

  800. flew to me

  801. having in his

  802. hand a burning

  803. coal that he

  804. had taken with

  805. tongs from the

  806. altar

  807. and he touched

  808. my mouth

  809. and said

  810. behold

  811. this has

  812. touched your

  813. lips

  814. your guilt

  815. is taken

  816. away

  817. your sin

  818. atoned for

  819. here we see

  820. the gospel

  821. of grace

  822. in this passage

  823. and you need

  824. to see it

  825. this is a

  826. case of

  827. open heart

  828. surgery

  829. and you need

  830. to see it's

  831. God who takes

  832. his initiative

  833. the medicine

  834. is taken from

  835. the altar

  836. the place of

  837. sacrifice

  838. without the

  839. without a

  840. sacrifice

  841. without the

  842. shedding of

  843. blood

  844. we know from

  845. the Old

  846. Testament

  847. there can be

  848. no forgiveness

  849. of sin

  850. it comes from

  851. an altar

  852. that's on fire

  853. that's got

  854. burning coals

  855. on it

  856. which is a

  857. picture of

  858. God's holy

  859. wrath

  860. against sin

  861. and this

  862. seraphim

  863. flies to

  864. Isaiah

  865. and he

  866. touches his

  867. lips with

  868. his burning

  869. coal

  870. and instead

  871. of him

  872. being destroyed

  873. he's cleansed

  874. you want to

  875. hear a better

  876. gospel verse

  877. in all the

  878. Bible than

  879. what the

  880. angel said

  881. behold

  882. this has

  883. touched

  884. your lips

  885. your guilt

  886. is taken

  887. away

  888. your sin

  889. is atoned

  890. for

  891. this is the

  892. gospel in

  893. high definition

  894. salvation

  895. God in

  896. salvation

  897. comes to

  898. take away

  899. our guilt

  900. and to

  901. atone for

  902. our sin

  903. and the

  904. altar

  905. is the

  906. cross

  907. but do

  908. you want

  909. to know

  910. the thing

  911. that should

  912. stun you

  913. and I

  914. into silence

  915. the vision

  916. that Isaiah

  917. has of God

  918. sitting on

  919. his throne

  920. high and

  921. lifted up

  922. the train

  923. of his

  924. robe

  925. filling the

  926. temple

  927. the seraphim

  928. singing

  929. holy

  930. holy

  931. holy

  932. holy

  933. is the

  934. Lord God

  935. of hosts

  936. the whole

  937. earth is

  938. full of

  939. his glory

  940. do you

  941. know that

  942. that vision

  943. is the

  944. vision

  945. of the

  946. pre-incarnate

  947. glory

  948. of Jesus

  949. Christ

  950. for in

  951. John's

  952. gospel

  953. John says

  954. Isaiah said

  955. these things

  956. when he

  957. spoke of

  958. Christ's

  959. glory

  960. the one

  961. who sat

  962. on the

  963. throne

  964. who was

  965. worshipped

  966. and adored

  967. by the

  968. angels

  969. is the

  970. same one

  971. who came

  972. into the

  973. sin sick

  974. world

  975. and hung

  976. on the

  977. cross

  978. the altar

  979. of sacrifice

  980. shed his

  981. blood

  982. so that

  983. sinners

  984. like you

  985. and me

  986. could be

  987. cleansed

  988. our guilt

  989. taken away

  990. our sin

  991. atoned for

  992. the thing

  993. that should

  994. stun us

  995. into silence

  996. is this is

  997. all for

  998. you and me

  999. our king

  1000. coming to

  1001. save and

  1002. rescue us

  1003. there were

  1004. many stories

  1005. after the

  1006. queen's

  1007. passing

  1008. of how

  1009. she

  1010. there were

  1011. moments in

  1012. her life

  1013. where she

  1014. kind of

  1015. stepped out

  1016. of her role

  1017. and did

  1018. some incredible

  1019. things for

  1020. some people

  1021. none of

  1022. them come

  1023. close to

  1024. this

  1025. none of

  1026. them

  1027. our

  1028. glorious

  1029. king

  1030. the king

  1031. of angel

  1032. armies

  1033. the creator

  1034. of this

  1035. universe

  1036. stepped off

  1037. his throne

  1038. and came

  1039. to die

  1040. in our

  1041. place

  1042. to shed

  1043. his blood

  1044. so that we

  1045. could be

  1046. forgiven

  1047. the birth

  1048. place of

  1049. hope is

  1050. the self

  1051. sacrificial

  1052. love of

  1053. God

  1054. and now

  1055. we come

  1056. to the

  1057. final

  1058. point

  1059. what is

  1060. the

  1061. response

  1062. and it's

  1063. nothing but

  1064. gratitude on

  1065. Isaiah's

  1066. part but I

  1067. don't want you

  1068. to miss

  1069. this

  1070. the first

  1071. time when

  1072. God speaks

  1073. is in

  1074. verse 8

  1075. the first

  1076. time that

  1077. Isaiah hears

  1078. his king

  1079. is in

  1080. verse 8

  1081. and I

  1082. heard the

  1083. voice of

  1084. the Lord

  1085. saying

  1086. whom

  1087. shall I

  1088. send

  1089. and who

  1090. will go

  1091. for us

  1092. the same

  1093. God who's

  1094. in the

  1095. business

  1096. of

  1097. cleansing

  1098. unclean

  1099. filthy

  1100. sinners

  1101. redeeming

  1102. them by

  1103. amazing

  1104. grace

  1105. is the

  1106. same

  1107. God who

  1108. seeks to

  1109. enlist

  1110. them

  1111. in his

  1112. glorious

  1113. service

  1114. you know

  1115. it's such

  1116. a thought

  1117. that should

  1118. cause us

  1119. to gasp

  1120. in amazement

  1121. God has

  1122. angels

  1123. that are

  1124. perfect

  1125. that can

  1126. do his

  1127. bidding

  1128. and yet

  1129. he chooses

  1130. to use

  1131. unclean

  1132. sinners

  1133. saved by

  1134. grace

  1135. to be

  1136. his

  1137. servants

  1138. he chooses

  1139. to use

  1140. people like

  1141. you and

  1142. I to

  1143. be his

  1144. envoy

  1145. his

  1146. ambassadors

  1147. to make

  1148. him known

  1149. in this

  1150. world

  1151. and it

  1152. is because

  1153. of gratitude

  1154. in Isaiah's

  1155. mind and

  1156. heart

  1157. that he

  1158. responds

  1159. with those

  1160. glorious

  1161. words

  1162. here

  1163. I am

  1164. send me

  1165. John Calvin

  1166. says

  1167. disregarding

  1168. Isaiah's

  1169. response

  1170. this shows

  1171. how great

  1172. is the

  1173. cheerfulness

  1174. that

  1175. springs

  1176. from

  1177. faith

  1178. it's

  1179. interesting

  1180. Isaiah

  1181. didn't need

  1182. to be

  1183. coerced

  1184. into

  1185. service

  1186. Isaiah

  1187. was just

  1188. overwhelmed

  1189. that his

  1190. king who

  1191. loved him

  1192. who showed

  1193. him such

  1194. grace

  1195. who cleansed

  1196. him

  1197. would

  1198. want to

  1199. use

  1200. him

  1201. and here

  1202. am I

  1203. send

  1204. me

  1205. use

  1206. me

  1207. and

  1208. brothers

  1209. and sisters

  1210. our

  1211. response

  1212. to

  1213. understanding

  1214. to

  1215. catching a

  1216. glimpse

  1217. tonight

  1218. and understanding

  1219. something of the

  1220. grace of God

  1221. tonight

  1222. should be to

  1223. want to go

  1224. and serve him

  1225. as he calls

  1226. us

  1227. you know

  1228. I said

  1229. there's

  1230. something of

  1231. the angels

  1232. posture

  1233. in

  1234. Isaiah

  1235. they

  1236. covered

  1237. their feet

  1238. because they

  1239. realized

  1240. they were

  1241. unworthy

  1242. they had

  1243. wings that

  1244. could fly

  1245. because they

  1246. realized

  1247. they would

  1248. go at

  1249. God's

  1250. bidding

  1251. whenever

  1252. he called

  1253. they

  1254. covered

  1255. their

  1256. face

  1257. because

  1258. they

  1259. knew

  1260. they

  1261. couldn't

  1262. behold

  1263. the

  1264. dazzling

  1265. intensity

  1266. of the

  1267. beauty

  1268. of

  1269. holiness

  1270. well here's

  1271. something

  1272. that is

  1273. completely

  1274. different

  1275. when he

  1276. comes again

  1277. when we

  1278. lay down

  1279. our crowns

  1280. at his

  1281. feet

  1282. at the

  1283. last

  1284. we

  1285. will see

  1286. him

  1287. as he

  1288. is

  1289. and in

  1290. the twinkling

  1291. of an

  1292. eye

  1293. we will

  1294. be made

  1295. just

  1296. like

  1297. him

  1298. such

  1299. is the

  1300. amazing

  1301. grace

  1302. of God

  1303. that he

  1304. has made

  1305. us

  1306. saved

  1307. us

  1308. uses

  1309. us

  1310. in his

  1311. service

  1312. and then

  1313. will give

  1314. us the

  1315. incredible

  1316. privilege

  1317. of beholding

  1318. him

  1319. face

  1320. to face

  1321. that my

  1322. friends

  1323. is grace

  1324. upon grace

  1325. this story

  1326. as I

  1327. close

  1328. wasn't told

  1329. of Queen

  1330. Elizabeth

  1331. it was told

  1332. of Queen

  1333. Victoria

  1334. it appeared

  1335. in a

  1336. London

  1337. newspaper

  1338. many years

  1339. ago

  1340. the conclusion

  1341. of a sermon

  1342. that she

  1343. heard

  1344. she approached

  1345. the preacher

  1346. and said

  1347. oh how

  1348. I wish

  1349. the Lord

  1350. might come

  1351. during my

  1352. lifetime

  1353. when the

  1354. preacher

  1355. asked her

  1356. what her

  1357. desire

  1358. was based

  1359. on

  1360. she

  1361. replied

  1362. I

  1363. should

  1364. like

  1365. to lay

  1366. my

  1367. crown

  1368. at his

  1369. feet

  1370. and when

  1371. at the

  1372. end

  1373. he

  1374. comes

  1375. brothers

  1376. and

  1377. sisters

  1378. we

  1379. will

  1380. be

  1381. given

  1382. a

  1383. crown

  1384. of

  1385. glory

  1386. and I

  1387. should

  1388. like

  1389. to lay

  1390. mine

  1391. down

  1392. at his

  1393. feet

  1394. the

  1395. King
