  1. And again, it's boiling, isn't it?

  2. So if you feel you need to get out

  3. accidents, there are tyrants,

  4. there are bullies which force their plans

  5. on the world and crush anyone

  6. who stands in their way.

  7. Maybe there are things that have happened

  8. in your life and the question is,

  9. why does God allow that?

  10. And it's a stumbling block, isn't it, to many people.

  11. It's a challenge to us

  12. as Christians that we need to face

  13. that if Jesus is God's King,

  14. bringing in God's kingdom,

  15. why isn't it here yet?

  16. It's been such a long time

  17. coming. Why is there so much

  18. opposition to Christianity in the world?

  19. And in trying to make sense

  20. of the world in which we live,

  21. I think we can go to two extremes.

  22. We might be over-optimistic as Christians

  23. and we might, things are bound

  24. to get better

  25. and we try to capture the world for Jesus.

  26. Things will just get better and better.

  27. The other hand is,

  28. we can be pessimistic, can't we?

  29. That things are going from bad to worse

  30. and so we just battle down the hatches

  31. and we wait until Jesus comes back.

  32. There's a teaching out there

  33. that is a heresy.

  34. It comes from America,

  35. as most heresies do.

  36. It's a teaching called the rapture.

  37. You might have heard it.

  38. There's many books that have been written

  39. on this theme.

  40. There are very bad films

  41. that have been written.

  42. It's very bad theology

  43. and it's this,

  44. that when Jesus returns,

  45. he will snatch up all the Christians

  46. and he'll rapture them away

  47. and he'll leave the world to unbelievers.

  48. So you wake up one morning

  49. and you go out

  50. and there's people's clothes

  51. lying on the pavement

  52. because all the Christians have disappeared.

  53. You were flying to America

  54. and there was a Christian pilot

  55. and sadly he's just disappeared.

  56. They've been taken away

  57. and unbelievers are now in charge of the world

  58. and that is a scary thought

  59. but let me tell you,

  60. it's not going to happen

  61. and it's not going to happen

  62. because Jesus says

  63. it is not going to happen.

  64. And that's what this parable is about.

  65. Jesus is not going to root out

  66. all the evildoers

  67. or snatch away all the Christians.

  68. Do you see what he says?

  69. They will continue side by side

  70. right to the very end.

  71. The wheat of God

  72. and the weeds of Satan.

  73. The sons of the kingdom,

  74. the sons of the evil one.

  75. Side by side

  76. right to the day of judgment.

  77. Good and evil

  78. will coexist.

  79. And as much as you and I

  80. would love God

  81. to remove all evil from the world,

  82. mercifully,

  83. he will not do that

  84. until judgment day.

  85. And so is this world

  86. going to get better

  87. or is this world

  88. going to get worse

  89. and the answer is

  90. yes.

  91. The world is getting better.

  92. The good seed of the gospel

  93. is growing.

  94. We've seen that

  95. in the first parable,

  96. it's an unstoppable harvest.

  97. It's producing

  98. an abundant harvest.

  99. Grain on the stalk.

  100. It's much,

  101. much more,

  102. isn't it,

  103. than that tiny little seed

  104. that was planted

  105. into the ground.

  106. And it's growing.

  107. But the weeds are growing.

  108. And every week that passes,

  109. they are larger

  110. and more deeply rooted

  111. than before.

  112. And that is the teaching

  113. of Jesus in this parable.

  114. I've just got two things to say.

  115. One,

  116. this parable helps us

  117. to understand

  118. our present reality

  119. and it points

  120. to a future certainty.

  121. Our present reality

  122. and our future certainty.

  123. Let's first of all

  124. look at the present reality.

  125. It helps us to make sense

  126. of the world

  127. in which we live.

  128. When we look at the world,

  129. we see,

  130. don't we,

  131. good and evil

  132. side by side

  133. vying with each other.

  134. And when you look

  135. at world history,

  136. you'll see that

  137. there are times

  138. when evil gets pushed down

  139. and that it rises again

  140. in a different form.

  141. Often in a more sinister form.

  142. And so,

  143. 2,000 years of Christianity,

  144. the world is much

  145. as it always has been.

  146. There are still wars out there

  147. and there are still

  148. rumors of wars.

  149. The wheat and the weed,

  150. they grow together.

  151. And when I move

  152. from looking at the world

  153. to looking into my own heart,

  154. what do I find?

  155. What's my experience?

  156. Well, it's exactly

  157. the same experience

  158. as the Apostle Paul.

  159. The good that I want to do,

  160. I can't do.

  161. And the evil that I don't want to do,

  162. I find myself doing.

  163. There's good and evil

  164. side by side in the world,

  165. but there's good and evil

  166. side by side in my heart.

  167. And that's the present reality

  168. in the church.

  169. We're told,

  170. Jesus told,

  171. we're told that Jesus

  172. chose the 12

  173. in John 6,

  174. but one of them

  175. was a devil.

  176. And so,

  177. if you're looking

  178. for a perfect church,

  179. if you've come here tonight

  180. as a perfect church,

  181. looking for a perfect church,

  182. let me tell you,

  183. this isn't it.

  184. But if you find it,

  185. as someone says,

  186. don't join it

  187. because you'll spoil it.

  188. And let me say,

  189. what I'm telling you,

  190. it's not an excuse

  191. to walk away

  192. from the church either.

  193. Some people say to me,

  194. they say to you,

  195. I don't go to church

  196. because it's full of hypocrites.

  197. And the response to that is,

  198. well,

  199. there's always room

  200. for one more.

  201. Come and join us.

  202. The wheat and the weeds

  203. grow together.

  204. And that fits

  205. with our experience

  206. in the world,

  207. in our lives,

  208. and in the church.

  209. The sons of the kingdom

  210. are cheek by jowl

  211. with the sons

  212. of the evil one.

  213. Isn't that right?

  214. And so just look

  215. in the parable with me.

  216. There's two things

  217. that you wouldn't

  218. necessarily know.

  219. The wheat and the weed

  220. at certain points

  221. are indistinguishable.

  222. There's a very

  223. specific word

  224. that's used here

  225. to describe the weed.

  226. The bearded darnel.

  227. It sounds like something

  228. from Lord of the Rings,

  229. doesn't it,

  230. or Star Wars.

  231. But it's a weed.

  232. That's the word here.

  233. It's being called

  234. wheat's evil twin

  235. because you can't

  236. distinguish it

  237. immediately from the wheat.

  238. It's a poisonous,

  239. extremely toxic weed.

  240. In fact,

  241. in a big enough dose,

  242. this weed will kill you.

  243. And at first,

  244. when it begins to grow,

  245. you can't tell the difference

  246. between the wheat.

  247. Both grow together.

  248. It's why it's so dangerous.

  249. And in this parable,

  250. this weed doesn't just

  251. spring up.

  252. Can you see verse 25?

  253. It's planted by an enemy.

  254. While his men were sleeping,

  255. his enemy came

  256. and sowed weeds

  257. among the wheat

  258. and went away.

  259. What have you got here?

  260. This is germ warfare.

  261. This is bioterrorism.

  262. Agricultural sabotage.

  263. The farmer's got a competitor.

  264. There's a rival

  265. who deliberately sets out

  266. to destroy the crop.

  267. And he does so

  268. by planting poisonous,

  269. toxic weeds

  270. in amongst the wheat.

  271. And doesn't that

  272. accord with our experience?

  273. According to Jesus,

  274. verse 38,

  275. the field is the world.

  276. Don't make the mistake

  277. that some have made

  278. in thinking this parable

  279. is about the church.

  280. It's not.

  281. In the world,

  282. there are two agendas.

  283. There are two peoples.

  284. There are two kingdoms.

  285. There are two forces

  286. side by side.

  287. Vying with each other.

  288. And that's always been the case,

  289. isn't it?

  290. If you go back

  291. to Genesis chapter 3

    Genesis 3 chapter mention

  292. that Johnny preached

  293. so helpfully on last week,

  294. there have always been

  295. these two.

  296. The sons of the kingdom

  297. and the sons of the evil one.

  298. And in that first announcement

  299. of the gospel,

  300. which Johnny preached brilliantly

  301. on the other Sunday morning,

  302. Jesus preaches to Satan.

  303. That's who the first sermon

  304. is addressed to.

  305. And it's not good news.

  306. He says,

  307. I will put hostility,

  308. I will put enmity

  309. between you and the woman

  310. and between your offspring

  311. and her offspring.

  312. And he shall bruise your head

  313. and you shall bruise his heel.

  314. And that's the story

  315. of the human race.

  316. The sons of the kingdom

  317. and the sons of the evil one.

  318. And this struggle begins

  319. to play itself out.

  320. And so Genesis chapter 4,

    Genesis 4 chapter mention

  321. the next chapter,

  322. you have a murderer

  323. and a victim.

  324. And it's played out

  325. all the way to the current time.

  326. There is an enemy

  327. who is opposed

  328. to God's rule on earth

  329. and he is intent

  330. on sabotaging it.

  331. There is a personal,

  332. malevolent being

  333. at work in this world

  334. called Satan

  335. and he sows weed

  336. amongst the wheat.

  337. Verse 25,

  338. an enemy came

  339. and sowed weeds

  340. amongst the wheat

  341. and went away.

  342. So when the plants

  343. came up

  344. and bore grain

  345. then the weeds

  346. appeared.

  347. How does that happen?

  348. I read this week

  349. that King Jong-un,

  350. the Korean dictator,

  351. his great-grandfather

  352. was a Presbyterian minister.

  353. I'm not,

  354. he's certainly influenced

  355. by Presbyterians

  356. but it seems

  357. that he may well

  358. have been a Presbyterian minister.

  359. They came out of China

  360. as a Christian family

  361. and moved to Korea.

  362. How did that happen?

  363. How did he become

  364. what he has become?

  365. An enemy has done this.

  366. While they were sleeping

  367. an enemy came

  368. and planted weeds

  369. amongst the wheat

  370. so that now North Korea

  371. is one of the most

  372. oppressive regimes

  373. in all the world.

  374. And yet in North Korea

  375. tonight there are sons

  376. of the kingdom

  377. in that field.

  378. and there are seeds

  379. of the evil one

  380. in that field.

  381. Together in God's province.

  382. You see we must

  383. wake up to this.

  384. This is spiritual warfare.

  385. Paul says we wrestle

  386. not against flesh and blood

  387. but powers and principalities

  388. in the heavenly realms.

  389. This is the evil one

  390. trying to stop

  391. God's work in the world

  392. seeking to destroy it.

  393. Remember Jesus told them

  394. in Mark's Gospel

  395. it gets that point

  396. in Mark 8

  397. where he says

  398. and we're going to go up

  399. to Jerusalem

  400. and the Son of Man

  401. which is the way

  402. he describes himself

  403. will be betrayed

  404. to the chief priests

  405. the teachers of the law

  406. they'll condemn him

  407. to death

  408. they'll turn him

  409. over to the Gentiles

  410. he'll be flogged

  411. and mocked

  412. and crucified.

  413. And they didn't

  414. want to hear that.

  415. And they say

  416. no way Jose

  417. is that going to

  418. happen to you.

  419. And what did Jesus

  420. say to Peter

  421. when Peter said that?

  422. What did Jesus say?

  423. Did he say thanks Peter

  424. for caring for me so much?

  425. Thanks Peter

  426. I really appreciate

  427. your concern.

  428. No he said

  429. get behind me Satan.

  430. What he's saying is

  431. Peter don't you realise

  432. what is going on?

  433. Wake up to the

  434. spiritual warfare

  435. that the enemy

  436. is trying to stop me

  437. from going to the cross.

  438. But I must go.

  439. Satan is trying

  440. to divert me

  441. from going to the cross

  442. and Satan does

  443. his damnedness

  444. to get rid of him

  445. right from the very beginning.

  446. So you remember

  447. Herod

  448. seeking to put

  449. those babies to death.

  450. And so

  451. wonderfully

  452. with the bruised heel

  453. of his

  454. crucified humanity

  455. Jesus has

  456. stamped

  457. on Satan's head

  458. and destroyed

  459. the works

  460. of the devil.

  461. Do you see

  462. what is happening

  463. is spiritual warfare.

  464. You see in Acts 2

  465. when Peter preaches

  466. the sons of the kingdom

  467. spring up

  468. and there's a great harvest.

  469. Thousands of people

  470. become Christians.

  471. And what happens

  472. is that the enemy

  473. comes persecuting

  474. the church

  475. from the outside

  476. and counterfeiting

  477. Christians

  478. on the inside.

  479. And you remember

  480. Ananias and Sapphira

  481. pretending to be

  482. what they were not.

  483. Pretending to be

  484. sons of God

  485. when they weren't.

  486. What is that?

  487. What's going on

  488. at that point?

  489. It is the enemy

  490. planting weeds

  491. amongst the wheat.

  492. So much harm

  493. is done, isn't it?

  494. So much harm

  495. is done.

  496. And it's been done

  497. in your life

  498. and my life

  499. by people

  500. pretending to be

  501. Christians.

  502. Gandhi

  503. was in South Africa

  504. during the days

  505. of apartheid.

  506. And Gandhi

  507. was very attracted

  508. to the gospel.

  509. Gandhi read

  510. about the Sermon

  511. on the Mount.

  512. He read the life

  513. and the teachings

  514. of Jesus

  515. and was attracted

  516. to Jesus.

  517. He tried one day

  518. to go,

  519. well I think,

  520. into a reformed church

  521. in South Africa

  522. and they refused

  523. him entry

  524. because of the colour

  525. of his skin.

  526. And it turned him

  527. off Christianity

  528. permanently.

  529. He said,

  530. I would become a Christian

  531. if I could find one.

  532. How did that happen?

  533. An enemy did it.

  534. While the church

  535. was sleeping,

  536. an enemy

  537. planted weeds

  538. against the weed.

  539. The other thing

  540. to notice

  541. is not only

  542. the weed

  543. and wheat

  544. are indistinguishable

  545. at first

  546. but they're entwined.

  547. Can you see that?

  548. So you can't

  549. pull up the weed

  550. without uprooting

  551. the wheat.

  552. This is what he says

  553. in verse 28.

  554. An enemy

  555. has done this.

  556. So the servant

  557. said to him,

  558. well then what do you

  559. want us to do

  560. to go and gather them?

  561. But he said,

  562. no,

  563. lest in gathering

  564. the weeds

  565. you root up

  566. the wheat

  567. along with them.

  568. Let them grow together

  569. until the harvest

  570. and at harvest time

  571. I will tell the reapers

  572. gather the weeds first,

  573. bind them in bundles

  574. to be burned.

  575. I hope when you read

  576. those verses

  577. you're glad.

  578. I think we should be glad.

  579. Aren't you glad

  580. that Jesus said that?

  581. Because what if

  582. all the weeds

  583. were ripped out?

  584. Where would that

  585. leave you?

  586. John Chapman,

  587. Australian evangelist

  588. said this.

  589. He said,

  590. if you're going to

  591. call the garbage man

  592. make sure you

  593. climb out of the bin.

  594. It's good,

  595. isn't it?

  596. If you're going to

  597. call the garbage man

  598. climb out of the bin,

  599. if you really want

  600. God to intervene,

  601. if you really want

  602. God to rip out

  603. all the weeds

  604. and root out

  605. all evil,

  606. where does that

  607. leave you?

  608. What a mercy it is,

  609. isn't it,

  610. that God has not

  611. separated the wheat

  612. from the weeds.

  613. He lets both

  614. grow together

  615. until harvest.

  616. That is the kindness

  617. and the patience,

  618. the perfect patience

  619. of God

  620. towards us.

  621. God says

  622. he doesn't wish

  623. that any would

  624. perish.

  625. Peter says,

  626. the Lord isn't

  627. slow to carry out

  628. his promise,

  629. as some count

  630. slowness,

  631. but he is patient

  632. towards you,

  633. not wishing that

  634. any should

  635. perish,

  636. but all come

  637. to repentance.

  638. He doesn't want

  639. anyone lost.

  640. Those who are

  641. weeds today

  642. may be wheat

  643. tomorrow.

  644. that's what

  645. Augustine said.

  646. And that was

  647. Augustine's story.

  648. If you know

  649. anything about him,

  650. Augustine certainly

  651. knew how to

  652. sow wild oats,

  653. and he was a

  654. young man who

  655. lived a very

  656. wild,

  657. desolate life.

  658. But St.

  659. Augustine had a

  660. godly mum,

  661. Monica,

  662. who prayed for him.

  663. And he was

  664. wonderfully converted

  665. in 386 AD.

  666. Converted to

  667. Christ in 386

  668. AD.

  669. But what if

  670. Jesus had come

  671. back in 385

  672. AD?

  673. What would

  674. have become of

  675. him then?

  676. What about you?

  677. How many of you

  678. have become

  679. Christians in

  680. the last 20

  681. or 30 years,

  682. or the last 10

  683. years, or the

  684. last year, or

  685. the last few

  686. months, or the

  687. last few

  688. minutes?

  689. What if Jesus

  690. had come back

  691. before then?

  692. I think that I

  693. became a Christian

  694. in July 1993.

  695. I'm a bit

  696. unsure.

  697. It's a complicated

  698. story.

  699. But I think it

  700. was July 1993.

  701. Not everyone

  702. can give a date,

  703. neither do you

  704. have to give a

  705. date.

  706. But what if

  707. Jesus had come

  708. back in May

  709. 1993?

  710. Or June

  711. 1993?

  712. I would have

  713. been eternally

  714. lost, because I

  715. was weed amongst

  716. the wheat back

  717. then.

  718. I came to

  719. church three

  720. times a Sunday,

  721. but I didn't

  722. love the Lord

  723. Jesus Christ.

  724. And you

  725. must not

  726. assume that

  727. you're a

  728. Christian tonight

  729. just because

  730. you're sitting

  731. in church.

  732. Because the

  733. wheat and

  734. the weeds,

  735. they grow

  736. together.

  737. The sons of

  738. the kingdom

  739. and the sons

  740. of the evil

  741. one can be

  742. sitting side

  743. by side in

  744. the same row

  745. in church,

  746. but don't

  747. despair because

  748. God is kind

  749. and God is

  750. patient.

  751. And he's

  752. slow to anger

  753. and he's

  754. swift to

  755. show mercy.

  756. And those

  757. who are weeds

  758. today may be

  759. wheat tomorrow.

  760. So let both

  761. grow together.

  762. Now let me

  763. apply this.

  764. What he's

  765. saying is

  766. where the wheat

  767. and the weeds

  768. grow together,

  769. your roots as

  770. a believer will

  771. be intertwined

  772. with people

  773. whose roots

  774. will be very

  775. different from

  776. you.

  777. And that

  778. will be true

  779. in your life.

  780. God has

  781. placed you,

  782. it's not a

  783. mistake the

  784. family you were

  785. born into,

  786. it's not a

  787. mistake the

  788. situation that

  789. you find

  790. yourself in.

  791. God has

  792. placed you in

  793. his sovereign

  794. providence into

  795. the family you've

  796. been born into.

  797. He has put you

  798. into the career

  799. that you're

  800. following.

  801. He has placed

  802. you where you

  803. are in his

  804. sovereignty with

  805. people and

  806. your roots are

  807. intertwined with

  808. people.

  809. And what Jesus

  810. is saying is

  811. this, don't

  812. pull up the

  813. roots.

  814. Let both grow

  815. together until

  816. the harvest.

  817. In other words,

  818. he is telling

  819. you and I,

  820. engage where

  821. you are

  822. with who

  823. God has

  824. planted you

  825. with.

  826. He has put

  827. you in your

  828. daily life.

  829. And so don't

  830. rush off to

  831. some monastery

  832. or whatever the

  833. equivalent of

  834. that is,

  835. don't kind of

  836. rush into some

  837. holy huddle

  838. singing praise

  839. songs.

  840. God in his

  841. sovereignty has

  842. put you into

  843. your family and

  844. so stay there,

  845. engage with those

  846. people.

  847. You are probably

  848. the only Christian

  849. in your workplace,

  850. in your school,

  851. and stay there

  852. where God has

  853. placed you.

  854. And your roots are

  855. intertwined with

  856. those people and

  857. not how God

  858. has designed it

  859. to be.

  860. Don't pull up

  861. the roots,

  862. flourish where

  863. God has placed

  864. you.

  865. Remember those

  866. who are weeds

  867. today, maybe

  868. weak tomorrow,

  869. and remember

  870. this, that the

  871. mission of the

  872. church is sowing

  873. seed, not

  874. pulling weeds.

  875. Do you hear

  876. that?

  877. We've got a big

  878. enough challenge,

  879. haven't we?

  880. I've got a big

  881. enough challenge

  882. trying to deal

  883. with the sin in

  884. my own heart,

  885. in my own

  886. family.

  887. It's not in

  888. our power,

  889. it is not in

  890. our calling to

  891. root out in

  892. the world.

  893. Root it out

  894. in the world.

  895. That is the

  896. calling of Christ,

  897. he will do it

  898. in the great

  899. judgment.

  900. You know what

  901. Paul says to

  902. the Corinthians,

  903. in 1 Corinthians

    1 Corinthians 4 chapter mention

  904. chapter 4,

  905. what have I to

  906. do with judging

  907. outsiders?

  908. That's not my

  909. business.

  910. It's those

  911. inside the

  912. church that we

  913. are to judge.

  914. God judges

  915. those outside,

  916. so stop judging

  917. those outside.

  918. There's a lot

  919. of that about,

  920. isn't there?

  921. Don't pull up

  922. the weeds,

  923. sow the seed.

  924. I think it's

  925. an issue,

  926. isn't it,

  927. for churches

  928. like us,

  929. that we can

  930. become really

  931. issues driven.

  932. We have a

  933. voice,

  934. we're entitled

  935. to make that

  936. Christian voice

  937. heard,

  938. to proclaim

  939. Christ publicly,

  940. to stand up

  941. for those

  942. who are most

  943. vulnerable.

  944. We're entitled

  945. to make our

  946. voice heard to

  947. the government,

  948. to make our

  949. views known.

  950. There is a

  951. place for that.

  952. But I find it

  953. far easier to

  954. sign a petition

  955. than a petition

  956. on the throne

  957. of grace.

  958. And our

  959. calling is not

  960. to pull up

  961. weeds,

  962. leave that to

  963. Jesus on

  964. judgment day.

  965. our job,

  966. our calling

  967. is to plant

  968. and sow

  969. the seed

  970. amongst people

  971. who we've

  972. been placed

  973. with.

  974. So this is

  975. the present

  976. reality,

  977. sowing and

  978. growing,

  979. but thank

  980. God there's

  981. no mowing.

  982. Sowing and

  983. growing,

  984. but no

  985. mowing.

  986. The kingdom

  987. is coming,

  988. and it is

  989. coming,

  990. and the seeds

  991. of the sons

  992. of the kingdom

  993. are springing

  994. up through

  995. the preaching

  996. of the gospel.

  997. The kingdom

  998. is coming,

  999. and judgment

  1000. is delaying.

  1001. That brings me

  1002. to my second

  1003. point,

  1004. which is the

  1005. future certainty,

  1006. for judgment

  1007. is certainly

  1008. coming.

  1009. And that's

  1010. why Jesus

  1011. takes us

  1012. in his

  1013. explanation

  1014. of the

  1015. parable

  1016. in verses

  1017. 36 to

  1018. 43,

  1019. to the end

  1020. of the world

  1021. of the day

  1022. of judgment,

  1023. and he sets

  1024. himself up

  1025. as the final

  1026. arbiter of

  1027. human destiny.

  1028. And make

  1029. no mistake,

  1030. this day is

  1031. coming,

  1032. and it is

  1033. only a

  1034. heartbeat

  1035. away.

  1036. C.S.

  1037. Lewis describes

  1038. it in one

  1039. of his broadcast

  1040. talks.

  1041. He says

  1042. this,

  1043. I wonder

  1044. whether people

  1045. who ask

  1046. God to

  1047. interfere

  1048. openly and

  1049. directly in

  1050. our world

  1051. quite realise

  1052. what it

  1053. will be

  1054. like when

  1055. he does.

  1056. When that

  1057. happens,

  1058. it is the

  1059. end of the

  1060. world.

  1061. When the

  1062. author walks

  1063. onto the

  1064. stage,

  1065. the play

  1066. is over,

  1067. and God

  1068. is going

  1069. to invade,

  1070. all right?

  1071. He will

  1072. strike either

  1073. irresistible

  1074. love or

  1075. irresistible

  1076. horror into

  1077. every creature,

  1078. and it will

  1079. be too late

  1080. then to

  1081. choose your

  1082. side.

  1083. That will

  1084. not be the

  1085. time for

  1086. choosing.

  1087. It will

  1088. be the

  1089. time when

  1090. we discover

  1091. which side

  1092. we've really

  1093. chosen,

  1094. whether we

  1095. realised it

  1096. before or

  1097. not.

  1098. Now today,

  1099. this moment,

  1100. is our chance

  1101. to choose the

  1102. right side.

  1103. You see,

  1104. there's an

  1105. urgency about

  1106. this,

  1107. isn't there?

  1108. There's a

  1109. future division

  1110. of the human

  1111. race,

  1112. and Jesus

  1113. is the

  1114. one who

  1115. is going

  1116. to judge.

  1117. You will

  1118. not be

  1119. judging

  1120. Jesus on

  1121. that day.

  1122. people

  1123. people often

  1124. say stupid

  1125. things to

  1126. me.

  1127. They say,

  1128. I've got a

  1129. bone to

  1130. pick with

  1131. your God.

  1132. I've got

  1133. some questions

  1134. I'd like to

  1135. ask him.

  1136. Do you

  1137. think that

  1138. you're going

  1139. to be

  1140. judging

  1141. Jesus?

  1142. No one

  1143. is going

  1144. to be

  1145. judging

  1146. Jesus

  1147. on that

  1148. day.

  1149. The

  1150. Son of

  1151. Man,

  1152. that favourite

  1153. self-designation,

  1154. verses 41

  1155. to 43.

  1156. The

  1157. Son of

  1158. Man will

  1159. send his

  1160. angels,

  1161. they will

  1162. gather out

  1163. of his

  1164. kingdom all

  1165. causes of

  1166. sin and

  1167. lawbreakers and

  1168. throw them

  1169. into the

  1170. fiery furnace.

  1171. In that

  1172. place,

  1173. there will

  1174. be weeping

  1175. and gnashing

  1176. of teeth.

  1177. And then

  1178. the righteous

  1179. will shine

  1180. like the

  1181. sun in

  1182. the kingdom

  1183. of their

  1184. father.

  1185. He who

  1186. has ears,

  1187. let him

  1188. hear.

  1189. It's

  1190. pretty

  1191. graphic,

  1192. isn't

  1193. it?

  1194. Jesus

  1195. doesn't

  1196. mince his

  1197. words.

  1198. It is

  1199. terrifying.

  1200. This is

  1201. gentle

  1202. Jesus,

  1203. meek and

  1204. mild.

  1205. The

  1206. wheat and

  1207. the

  1208. weed will

  1209. be eternally

  1210. separated,

  1211. the harvest

  1212. will come,

  1213. the wheat will

  1214. be gathered

  1215. into God's

  1216. barn,

  1217. and the

  1218. weeds will

  1219. be burnt

  1220. up.

  1221. I know

  1222. it's picture

  1223. language,

  1224. I'm prepared

  1225. to concede

  1226. that.

  1227. It's

  1228. picture

  1229. language,

  1230. but the

  1231. reality is

  1232. more sobering

  1233. than the

  1234. picture.

  1235. And there

  1236. is a

  1237. massive

  1238. warning,

  1239. isn't

  1240. there,

  1241. for you

  1242. and I

  1243. here,

  1244. that hell

  1245. is a

  1246. reality.

  1247. And no

  1248. one had

  1249. more to

  1250. say about

  1251. hell than

  1252. the Lord

  1253. Jesus.

  1254. No one

  1255. spoke more

  1256. frequently about

  1257. hell than

  1258. Jesus.

  1259. And listen

  1260. to what he

  1261. says,

  1262. there will

  1263. be weeping

  1264. and gnashing

  1265. of teeth.

  1266. That is,

  1267. hell is a

  1268. place of

  1269. eternal,

  1270. everlasting

  1271. regret,

  1272. but no

  1273. repentance.

  1274. Eyes

  1275. opened,

  1276. but hearts

  1277. not softened.

  1278. Reaping

  1279. and gnashing

  1280. of teeth,

  1281. permanent

  1282. and unrelenting.

  1283. Anger

  1284. and frustration

  1285. against God,

  1286. that is

  1287. hell.

  1288. And Jesus

  1289. doesn't say

  1290. this tonight

  1291. to frighten

  1292. you.

  1293. He says

  1294. it because

  1295. it is

  1296. true.

  1297. Jesus

  1298. doesn't say

  1299. it to

  1300. frighten

  1301. you.

  1302. He's not

  1303. trying to

  1304. scare people

  1305. into the

  1306. kingdom,

  1307. that is

  1308. not how

  1309. Jesus

  1310. operates

  1311. it.

  1312. He

  1313. doesn't

  1314. say it

  1315. to frighten

  1316. you,

  1317. he says

  1318. it to

  1319. warn

  1320. you.

  1321. And

  1322. he's

  1323. looking

  1324. for a

  1325. response

  1326. for us.

  1327. Verse 43,

  1328. he who

  1329. has ears,

  1330. let him

  1331. hear.

  1332. Heed the

  1333. warning.

  1334. You've

  1335. got a

  1336. pair of

  1337. ears,

  1338. haven't

  1339. you?

  1340. Some

  1341. of you

  1342. are blessed

  1343. with your

  1344. ears.

  1345. Some

  1346. of us

  1347. have

  1348. considerable

  1349. ears.

  1350. There's

  1351. no mystery

  1352. about

  1353. becoming

  1354. a

  1355. Christian.

  1356. You

  1357. don't

  1358. have to

  1359. go to

  1360. a

  1361. secret

  1362. ceremony.

  1363. You

  1364. don't

  1365. have to

  1366. come to

  1367. a

  1368. special

  1369. place.

  1370. You

  1371. have

  1372. to

  1373. listen.

  1374. You

  1375. have to

  1376. listen to

  1377. what Jesus

  1378. is saying

  1379. to you

  1380. tonight.

  1381. If you've

  1382. got ears

  1383. to hear,

  1384. there is a

  1385. way to

  1386. escape hell

  1387. tonight,

  1388. and to

  1389. be bundled

  1390. together with

  1391. those who

  1392. are Christ's

  1393. people.

  1394. And so

  1395. take this

  1396. tonight from

  1397. Jesus as

  1398. a challenge,

  1399. not a

  1400. conclusion.

  1401. Take it as

  1402. an invitation

  1403. to life,

  1404. not a

  1405. sentence of

  1406. death.

  1407. Two of

  1408. the great

  1409. leaders of

  1410. the 19th

  1411. century,

  1412. the Christian

  1413. leaders,

  1414. were John

  1415. Newton.

  1416. He wrote

  1417. Amazing Grace.

  1418. He's a

  1419. converted slave

  1420. trader.

  1421. You can go

  1422. to his

  1423. church at

  1424. Bank,

  1425. right in

  1426. the heart

  1427. of the

  1428. city.

  1429. He was a

  1430. converted slave

  1431. trader, and

  1432. one of his

  1433. friends was

  1434. William Wilberforce,

  1435. a man who

  1436. spearheaded in

  1437. many ways the

  1438. end of

  1439. slavery.

  1440. He was a

  1441. social reformer,

  1442. and Wilberforce

  1443. and Newton

  1444. were great

  1445. friends.

  1446. Wilberforce

  1447. moved in

  1448. high circles.

  1449. He was a

  1450. friend of

  1451. the Prime

  1452. Minister,

  1453. William

  1454. Pitt the

  1455. Younger,

  1456. and he

  1457. invited

  1458. William

  1459. Pitt the

  1460. Younger

  1461. to go

  1462. and hear

  1463. John

  1464. Newton

  1465. preach.

  1466. William

  1467. Pitt the

  1468. Younger

  1469. became

  1470. Prime

  1471. Minister

  1472. at

  1473. 24.

  1474. He

  1475. was a

  1476. brilliant

  1477. man,

  1478. one of

  1479. the most

  1480. famous

  1481. Prime

  1482. Ministers.

  1483. William

  1484. Wilberforce

  1485. invited him

  1486. to church,

  1487. and Pitt

  1488. said,

  1489. after he'd

  1490. been there,

  1491. my dear

  1492. Wilberforce,

  1493. what was he so

  1494. excited about

  1495. today?

  1496. I don't think I

  1497. grasped it.

  1498. Pitt was one of

  1499. the most brilliant

  1500. minds in

  1501. England,

  1502. listening to

  1503. one of the

  1504. most eloquent

  1505. preachers of

  1506. grace,

  1507. the man who

  1508. wrote Amazing

  1509. Grace,

  1510. and yet he

  1511. heard it,

  1512. but he

  1513. didn't hear

  1514. it.

  1515. He didn't

  1516. have ears

  1517. to hear.

  1518. And I

  1519. think tonight

  1520. he's regretting

  1521. that,

  1522. don't you?

  1523. I think he

  1524. will regret

  1525. that to all

  1526. eternity.

  1527. He

  1528. heard the

  1529. gospel,

  1530. but he

  1531. didn't hear

  1532. it.

  1533. Hearing it,

  1534. but didn't

  1535. understand it.

  1536. And what

  1537. about you?

  1538. Do you

  1539. see yourself

  1540. in this

  1541. parable?

  1542. What are

  1543. the

  1544. parables?

  1545. Earthly

  1546. stories of

  1547. the heavenly

  1548. meaning,

  1549. it's not a

  1550. great diagnosis,

  1551. it's not a

  1552. great definition.

  1553. A better

  1554. definition that

  1555. somebody has

  1556. said,

  1557. they are like

  1558. hand grenades,

  1559. they're like

  1560. time bombs,

  1561. that Jesus

  1562. throws and

  1563. then they go

  1564. off and they

  1565. explode at the

  1566. right time,

  1567. and Jesus

  1568. throws these

  1569. stories alongside

  1570. us, which is

  1571. the word

  1572. literally what

  1573. a parable

  1574. means to

  1575. be alongside

  1576. us.

  1577. And he

  1578. gives you

  1579. this parable

  1580. not to

  1581. destroy you,

  1582. but to

  1583. save you.

  1584. And so do

  1585. you see

  1586. yourself in

  1587. the story,

  1588. a simple

  1589. story?

  1590. Can you see

  1591. yourself here?

  1592. Are you a

  1593. member of the

  1594. royal family,

  1595. a son of

  1596. the king,

  1597. or are you a

  1598. son of the

  1599. evil one,

  1600. a member of

  1601. the devil's

  1602. family?

  1603. Which family

  1604. do you belong

  1605. to?

  1606. At harvest

  1607. time, Jesus

  1608. says, I

  1609. will tell

  1610. the reapers,

  1611. gather the

  1612. wheat first,

  1613. gather the

  1614. wheat first.

  1615. Gather the

  1616. wheat first

  1617. together,

  1618. and throw

  1619. the weeds

  1620. into the

  1621. fire.

  1622. They'll be

  1623. bundled up

  1624. together.

  1625. Which bundle

  1626. are you in?

  1627. On that

  1628. great and

  1629. terrifying day,

  1630. will you be

  1631. found in the

  1632. bundle of

  1633. life, bundled

  1634. together with

  1635. those from

  1636. Christ's eyes?

  1637. Will you be

  1638. among the

  1639. righteous who

  1640. will shine

  1641. like the

  1642. sun?

  1643. Do you

  1644. know where

  1645. you'll be

  1646. in that

  1647. day?

  1648. And if

  1649. you're unsure

  1650. tonight,

  1651. please make

  1652. sure tonight.

  1653. Jesus is

  1654. saying to you

  1655. tonight through

  1656. the preaching

  1657. of his word,

  1658. turn to

  1659. me, cry

  1660. to me,

  1661. trust me

  1662. to save

  1663. you and I

  1664. will rescue

  1665. you.

  1666. I will

  1667. rescue you

  1668. from the

  1669. wrath to

  1670. come.

  1671. John

  1672. Wesley was

  1673. the founder

  1674. of Methodism.

  1675. He famously

  1676. said, the

  1677. world is my

  1678. parish.

  1679. He averaged

  1680. 15 sermons a

  1681. week.

  1682. I can just

  1683. about manage

  1684. one decent

  1685. one.

  1686. He reached

  1687. right up into

  1688. his 80s.

  1689. He preached

  1690. 40,000

  1691. sermons.

  1692. He travelled

  1693. more than

  1694. 250,000 miles

  1695. on horseback

  1696. even into

  1697. his 80s.

  1698. During an

  1699. age when

  1700. the roads

  1701. were just

  1702. muddy tracks,

  1703. no tarmac,

  1704. he was an

  1705. incredibly

  1706. organised guy.

  1707. He meticulously

  1708. kept a diary

  1709. and this is

  1710. his entry

  1711. for the

  1712. 28th of

  1713. May 1742.

  1714. We came

  1715. to Newcastle,

  1716. Newcastle-pontine,

  1717. about six o'clock

  1718. and after a

  1719. short refreshment

  1720. walked into

  1721. the town.

  1722. I was surprised.

  1723. So much

  1724. drunkenness,

  1725. cursing and

  1726. swearing,

  1727. even from the

  1728. mouths of

  1729. little children.

  1730. Do I

  1731. never

  1732. remember to

  1733. have seen

  1734. and heard

  1735. before?

  1736. It's a

  1737. small

  1738. compass of

  1739. time.

  1740. Surely

  1741. this place

  1742. is ripe.

  1743. Ripe for

  1744. what?

  1745. What would

  1746. you say?

  1747. How would

  1748. you finish

  1749. that sentence?

  1750. Our

  1751. natural

  1752. reaction

  1753. would be

  1754. to complete

  1755. the sentence

  1756. well with

  1757. something like

  1758. this.

  1759. It's ripe

  1760. for hell.

  1761. Surely

  1762. this place

  1763. is ripe

  1764. for judgment

  1765. but Wesley

  1766. saw things

  1767. differently

  1768. and this

  1769. is what

  1770. he wrote.

  1771. surely

  1772. this place

  1773. is ripe

  1774. for him

  1775. who came

  1776. not to

  1777. call the

  1778. righteous

  1779. but sinners

  1780. to repentance.

  1781. That's it,

  1782. isn't it?

  1783. This is what

  1784. this parable

  1785. teaches us.

  1786. As you look

  1787. at the world

  1788. around us,

  1789. how do you

  1790. see it?

  1791. Do you see it

  1792. being ripe

  1793. for judgment?

  1794. Finger wagging,

  1795. pulling up the

  1796. weeds,

  1797. pharisaical

  1798. Christians,

  1799. ripe for

  1800. judgment,

  1801. almost gloating

  1802. over it.

  1803. All right

  1804. for Jesus.

  1805. Let's pray.

  1806. Lord Jesus,

  1807. when you

  1808. saw the

  1809. crowds

  1810. and the

  1811. multitudes,

  1812. you had

  1813. compassion

  1814. on them.

  1815. You

  1816. wept

  1817. over

  1818. Jerusalem.

  1819. You

  1820. pleaded

  1821. with them

  1822. to repent.

  1823. You

  1824. came

  1825. not to

  1826. condemn

  1827. but to

  1828. save.

  1829. Scripture

  1830. even tells

  1831. us that

  1832. judgment

  1833. is your

  1834. strange

  1835. work.

  1836. And so

  1837. Heavenly

  1838. Father,

  1839. we ask

  1840. that you

  1841. would give

  1842. to us

  1843. the heart

  1844. of the

  1845. Lord Jesus

  1846. for this

  1847. city,

  1848. for this

  1849. area,

  1850. for this

  1851. family.

  1852. We ask

  1853. Heavenly

  1854. Father that

  1855. you would

  1856. be gracious

  1857. to us

  1858. tonight.

  1859. You

  1860. would melt

  1861. our icy

  1862. hearts.

  1863. You

  1864. would soften

  1865. the stony

  1866. heart here.

  1867. and you

  1868. would give

  1869. to us

  1870. the heart

  1871. of flesh

  1872. by your

  1873. Spirit.

  1874. We pray

  1875. in Jesus'

  1876. name.

  1877. Amen.

  1878. Amen.
