  1. Please do grab your Bibles again and turn to Mark chapter 14, starting verse 66.

    Mark 14 chapter mention

  2. We'll be looking at these six verses.

  3. !

  4. Lord God, we pray for Christ to be known this evening.

  5. Would we know his grace and the forgiveness there is in Christ, and would your Spirit work

  6. in us faith to receive that.

  7. And we pray all this in Jesus' name.

  8. Amen.

  9. We are watching a red carpet tonight.

  10. We stand on the sidelines as we watch a red carpet.

  11. So you know when there's a big celebrity event like the Oscars, and they have a red carpet,

  12. and you have all these actors walking down the red carpet toward a fancy building, and

  13. the red carpet tells you about what kind of event they're heading to, doesn't it?

  14. You see the red carpet, and you know that they're heading toward champagne and awards and glamour

  15. and money.

  16. The red carpet tells you about the kind of event coming up.

  17. Well, today, Mark is showing us a red carpet.

  18. It is the red carpet that Jesus walked on toward his death.

  19. We are deep into Jesus' journey to the cross.

  20. It is the night before he dies.

  21. And as we see him walk there, we begin to see exactly what he's heading towards.

  22. The journey there tells you about the main event itself.

  23. This passage, in fact, all these events leading up to Jesus' crucifixion, they all tell us about

  24. what's going to happen at the cross.

  25. And we're going to look at these events, this night before the crucifixion, or the lead up

  26. to the crucifixion.

  27. We're going to look at these over the next few weeks.

  28. And just like a red carpet before the main event, this shows us what's going to happen

  29. on the cross.

  30. But this red carpet, it's not fun.

  31. It's not full of flashing lights.

  32. No, it's dark.

  33. And it's lonely.

  34. And it involves Jesus' closest companion turning his back on Jesus.

  35. So things will be dark this evening.

  36. This red carpet is not leading to anything glamorous, but it is glorious.

  37. Because we're going to see something in particular about the cross tonight.

  38. We're going to see what kind of people Jesus died for.

  39. As Jesus walks this red carpet to the cross, there's a question in the air.

  40. Who is Jesus going to the cross for?

  41. He's already said the Son of Man came to give his life as a ransom for many.

  42. But who are the many?

  43. What are they like?

  44. Who did Jesus die for?

  45. Well, today, as we see the story of Peter, we see exactly who he's dying for.

  46. It is a very vivid and personal glimpse into the kind of person Jesus saves.

  47. So let's watch Jesus walk the red carpet tonight and see who he died for.

  48. And this is the first thing we see.

  49. Jesus died for very bad sinners.

  50. This story, as Paul read it earlier, it leaves you with a bad taste in your mouth, doesn't it?

  51. And it should.

  52. That is the point.

  53. This is meant to be shocking.

  54. And we need to appreciate how shocking it is.

  55. This is the night before the crucifixion.

  56. Jesus is currently arrested.

  57. He's being tried by the Sanhedrin.

  58. That's the Jewish court.

  59. And tensions are high.

  60. It's not a safe thing to be one of Jesus' disciples.

  61. That is why only a few verses before, Mark writes that as soon as Jesus is arrested,

  62. all his disciples left him and fled.

  63. Jesus had no one.

  64. But in verse 66, we see Peter.

  65. He's below in the courtyard.

  66. He's outside while Jesus is inside being condemned by the Jewish leaders.

  67. Peter, he's kind of still following Jesus at this point.

  68. But he's at a distance.

  69. He's not too close, not too open.

  70. He's laying low, trying not to draw attention to himself.

  71. So he just stays outside, warming himself by the fire.

  72. And why Peter?

  73. Of all the disciples, why Peter?

  74. Well, Peter is Jesus' closest companion.

  75. When you read the Gospels, Peter, he's kind of like the go-to disciple.

  76. We get to hear Jesus' conversations, private conversations with Peter.

  77. For example, we don't hear much about Simon the Zealot.

  78. But Peter is different.

  79. Peter is, he's the loud disciple.

  80. He's the one who shouts about how much he loves Jesus.

  81. Back in verse 25, Jesus tells all his disciples,

  82. you will all fall away.

  83. And Peter, he's the only one to respond.

  84. And he blurts out and he says,

  85. even though they all fall away, I will not.

  86. Peter, he's the big, keen disciple.

  87. So just think of, for a moment, who followed Jesus?

  88. Jesus.

  89. So when we read the Gospels, Jesus had crowds following him.

  90. They were kind of just the mass of people that were interested in Jesus.

  91. And those people came and went.

  92. And then within that big crowd, he had a large group of disciples,

  93. people who really followed him.

  94. Luke mentions the 72 disciples.

  95. And within that larger group, you have the 12 disciples.

  96. They're Jesus' closest group.

  97. And within that, Jesus often picked out three.

  98. It was Peter, James, and John.

  99. He would kind of sometimes take them in just to a room to perform a miracle.

  100. But within those three, Peter stands out.

  101. He's the most eager one.

  102. He's the close one.

  103. Peter is Jesus' closest and most loyal companion.

  104. Which makes what happens next all the more tragic.

  105. Verse 66.

  106. And as Peter was below in the courtyard, one of the servant girls of the high priest came.

  107. And seeing Peter warming himself, she looked at him and said,

  108. You also were with the Nazarene Jesus.

  109. A young girl approaches Peter.

  110. And she says, Hey, you're with that Jesus guy, aren't you?

  111. And how does Peter respond?

  112. Verse 68.

  113. But he denied it.

  114. Saying, I neither know nor understand what you mean.

  115. How the mighty have fallen.

  116. He's happy to follow Jesus from a distance.

  117. But as soon as following Jesus means something,

  118. Peter, the eager one,

  119. he gives up Jesus in an instant.

  120. And did you notice what makes Peter abandon the one he so proudly loved?

  121. Look who makes him fold.

  122. It's not a big bouncer coming along.

  123. It's not a guy with a gun threatening him.

  124. It's not a mob like they had for Jesus.

  125. No, it's a little question from a servant girl

  126. that makes Jesus' closest companion crumble.

  127. He realizes what it means to be associated with Jesus.

  128. It means maybe getting arrested.

  129. It means danger.

  130. It means trouble.

  131. And he makes up his mind.

  132. Jesus is not worth that.

  133. And did you see how slippery his response was?

  134. He doesn't say at first,

  135. oh no, I don't know him.

  136. He's not as blatant as that.

  137. Instead he says,

  138. no, I don't know what you mean.

  139. He's cowardly about it.

  140. He's trying to worm his way out.

  141. He does what he can to kind of dodge

  142. and worm his way out of the situation.

  143. But Mark is clear what he's doing.

  144. He denied knowing Jesus.

  145. And this is just the beginning

  146. because from here on in,

  147. we see a shameful downward spiral of sin.

  148. Peter moves away from the fire

  149. and it says he goes into the gateway.

  150. So away from the fire,

  151. into the shadows.

  152. And that says a lot about the nature of sin.

  153. Sin is shameful.

  154. It doesn't want to be seen.

  155. Sin loves darkness.

  156. Sin loves to stay secret and hide.

  157. Sin loves to stay secret.

  158. Peter heads into the darkness of sin.

  159. But things get more public from here.

  160. In verse 69,

  161. the servant girl saw him

  162. and began saying to the bystanders around,

  163. this man is one of them.

  164. But again,

  165. he denied it.

  166. Now,

  167. Peter doesn't just deny Christ to one girl,

  168. but he denies Christ to a crowd nearby.

  169. His sin is clearer,

  170. more public.

  171. It's sharper.

  172. And then comes the final nail in the coffin.

  173. Maybe Peter was being slippery or vague about Christ before,

  174. but now look in verse 70.

  175. And after a little while,

  176. the bystanders again said to Peter,

  177. certainly you are one of them,

  178. for you are a Galilean.

  179. But he began to invoke a curse on himself

  180. and to swear,

  181. I do not know this man of whom you speak.

  182. Remember who this is.

  183. This is Peter.

  184. This is the keenest of the disciples.

  185. Only a few verses back in verse 31,

  186. Peter said to Jesus,

  187. even if it means dying with you,

  188. I will not deny you.

  189. Now listen again.

  190. I do not know this man.

  191. Peter's sin is on display here.

  192. And it's ugly.

  193. It's really ugly.

  194. He's denied the Lord Jesus.

  195. And it's not just a single slip up.

  196. No, it's repeated,

  197. thoughtful,

  198. willful sin.

  199. And he even does it with such force and aggression,

  200. doesn't he?

  201. He invokes a curse on himself.

  202. He swears.

  203. He says,

  204. I swear on my life.

  205. I don't know him.

  206. I'm not interested in him.

  207. I'm telling you,

  208. I have nothing to do with Jesus.

  209. And actually,

  210. he can't even say his name.

  211. He just calls Jesus this man.

  212. He's a nobody to me.

  213. What we have here are the details of a shocking and appalling sin.

  214. Peter is a very bad sinner.

  215. And it's written down for all of us to see.

  216. And why do we see this?

  217. As Jesus walks to the cross,

  218. why is this on the red carpet?

  219. Well, because it's showing us what Jesus is heading towards.

  220. What the main event is all about.

  221. We see here what kind of people Jesus died for.

  222. Jesus is going to the cross to die for Peter.

  223. To suffer for this very sin.

  224. And he went to the cross for sinners just like Peter.

  225. Jesus died for very bad sinners.

  226. We have on display a particularly terrible sin

  227. to show the sheer depths of sin that Christ died for.

  228. Christ died for blatant, public,

  229. repeated, spiralling down,

  230. caught in the web of it,

  231. painfully shocking sin.

  232. And Jesus is on his way to die for this sin.

  233. So Jesus didn't go to the cross

  234. only just for small sins

  235. or sins that we don't mind people knowing about that much.

  236. No, Jesus went to the cross

  237. even for the most shocking sins.

  238. Sins that make us want to retreat into the shadows.

  239. We have this passage in front of us

  240. so that we know

  241. there is no sin too shocking for Christ to save you.

  242. He forgave Peter and he can forgive you.

  243. So it needs to be said

  244. there is no sin too shocking to confess.

  245. If there's a sin in your life right now

  246. and you're needing to talk about it

  247. and you're wanting to confess it to Paul

  248. or one of the elders

  249. and you're needing help with it

  250. but you're worried that maybe it's too shocking.

  251. Well, whatever it is

  252. and I mean whatever it is

  253. it's not as shocking as this.

  254. You can talk about it with Paul.

  255. You can talk about it with the elders.

  256. They won't be shocked.

  257. They won't be shocked that someone could do

  258. whatever sin that may be

  259. because just look at Peter here.

  260. Jesus died for very bad sinners.

  261. Sinners just like you and me.

  262. And as he walked this red carpet

  263. as he approached the cross

  264. this wasn't a surprise to Jesus either.

  265. He knew how bad our sin was.

  266. And this is my second point.

  267. Jesus knew he would die for very bad sinners.

  268. Jesus knew he would die for very bad sinners.

  269. Just look at verse 72.

  270. Verse 72.

  271. And immediately

  272. the rooster crowed a second time

  273. and Peter remembered how Jesus had said to him

  274. before the rooster crows twice

  275. you will deny me three times.

  276. And he broke down and wept.

  277. Now we need to see a point here.

  278. Not just that

  279. Jesus did die for very bad sinners

  280. but he knew that he was

  281. to die for very bad sinners beforehand.

  282. Did you notice

  283. Jesus predicted this whole event.

  284. You can read it in verse 30.

  285. Jesus knew what Peter was going to do

  286. and yet

  287. Jesus still went to the cross for Peter.

  288. He knew the very sin he was going to carry.

  289. He knew the price that had to be paid.

  290. And he still went there.

  291. As Jesus approached the cross

  292. he knew that he was to pay the penalty

  293. for his people's sins.

  294. And it wasn't vague sin.

  295. It wasn't kind of a mystery punishment

  296. that he was heading towards.

  297. He knew who he was dying for

  298. and he knew that their sin would be shocking.

  299. He knew how bad it was.

  300. He looked at the sin of his people

  301. and he said

  302. that sin

  303. I need to die for that sin.

  304. Jesus knew he would die for very bad sinners.

  305. And just like Peter's sin

  306. he knew it was sin against him.

  307. We don't need to think

  308. Peter's sin is so unique here

  309. because we need to understand

  310. that all our sin

  311. is against Christ

  312. and a denial of him.

  313. We sung Psalm 51 earlier

  314. and it's a prayer of confession to God

  315. and it says

  316. against you

  317. you only

  318. have I sinned.

  319. So yes

  320. we definitely sin against other people

  321. all the time

  322. but ultimately

  323. all our sin

  324. is against God.

  325. All our sin

  326. is a rejection of God.

  327. All our sin

  328. is a denial

  329. of the Son of God.

  330. the Apostle John

  331. says this about Jesus

  332. the world was made through him

  333. yet the world

  334. did not know him.

  335. They rejected him

  336. they denied him.

  337. So even if this is

  338. tonight

  339. the first time

  340. that you've heard about Jesus

  341. all your sin

  342. up to this point

  343. has been a denial of him.

  344. All our sin

  345. is a denial of him.

  346. That is what sin is.

  347. And as Jesus

  348. walked the road

  349. to the cross

  350. he knew

  351. our sin

  352. is shocking

  353. and he knew

  354. it was sin

  355. against him.

  356. So it wasn't just

  357. generally bad things

  358. that he knew

  359. he would pay for

  360. it wasn't just

  361. wrong things

  362. done out there

  363. in the ether

  364. no it was sin

  365. against the Son of God

  366. and the Son of God

  367. came to die for it.

  368. Jesus knew

  369. he would die

  370. for very bad sinners

  371. which means

  372. your sin

  373. is not a shock

  374. to the elders here

  375. and it's not a shock

  376. to Jesus either.

  377. When we commit sin

  378. in our shame

  379. we want to hide

  380. in the shadows

  381. don't we?

  382. We don't want to

  383. come to Christ with it

  384. almost as if

  385. in our minds

  386. we think that Christ

  387. would somehow

  388. be shocked

  389. by it

  390. or he didn't know

  391. that we would do that

  392. but don't think

  393. that your sin

  394. is a surprise

  395. to Jesus.

  396. He knew about it

  397. as he walked

  398. to the cross

  399. and he's already

  400. paid for it.

  401. But let's ask

  402. what about denying

  403. Jesus like Peter did?

  404. Can we say

  405. Jesus died

  406. for those who

  407. deny him?

  408. Well let's look

  409. how this story ends.

  410. This story is ending

  411. it's a bit

  412. ambiguous isn't it?

  413. So end of verse 72

  414. these last few words

  415. and he broke down

  416. and wept.

  417. This short paragraph

  418. it doesn't tell us

  419. about Peter's fate.

  420. We have to read on

  421. to the resurrection

  422. in chapter 16

  423. where we see

  424. that Jesus

  425. he wants to meet

  426. with Peter

  427. and we see

  428. Peter does not

  429. deny him anymore

  430. he's restored to Jesus

  431. and if you come

  432. on a Tuesday lunchtime

  433. you can hear

  434. Peter's own words

  435. of the greatness

  436. of his salvation

  437. as we preach

  438. to one Peter.

  439. So it's looking ahead

  440. that we can know

  441. and we can say

  442. that Christ died

  443. for Peter's sin.

  444. Peter denies Christ

  445. but he doesn't

  446. keep denying Christ.

  447. There is no salvation

  448. for those who deny

  449. Jesus forever.

  450. there needs to be repentance

  451. and we see

  452. this glimmer

  453. of hope

  454. at the end.

  455. And he broke down

  456. and wept.

  457. Peter weeps

  458. over his sin

  459. and he weeps

  460. over the words

  461. of Jesus.

  462. So it's not just

  463. sadness in general

  464. he weeps

  465. over the words

  466. of Jesus.

  467. This is a glimmer

  468. of repentance.

  469. It is a Jesus

  470. centered weeping.

  471. In Matthew's gospel

  472. we hear

  473. about Judas

  474. after Judas

  475. betrayed Jesus

  476. it only says

  477. that he changed

  478. his mind

  479. and he felt

  480. bad about it

  481. but he didn't

  482. weep.

  483. There was no

  484. seeking after Jesus

  485. after his sin.

  486. You know

  487. Judas

  488. hangs himself.

  489. That isn't

  490. seeking Jesus

  491. that's seeking

  492. to escape Jesus.

  493. But Peter

  494. weeps

  495. and that is

  496. the right way

  497. to react to sin.

  498. It's to recall

  499. the words of Jesus

  500. and weep.

  501. Not in despair

  502. not to be

  503. hopelessly crushed

  504. but to hate

  505. our sin

  506. and to turn

  507. to Jesus.

  508. And that is

  509. what happens

  510. with Peter.

  511. There is hope

  512. for this man.

  513. There is hope

  514. for Peter.

  515. And so as we

  516. see the story

  517. of Peter

  518. this very bad

  519. sinner

  520. and as we

  521. as we watch

  522. this red carpet

  523. we see one

  524. final thing.

  525. There is hope

  526. for failed

  527. Christians.

  528. There is hope

  529. for failed

  530. Christians.

  531. Peter

  532. isn't just

  533. a very bad

  534. sinner.

  535. Peter was

  536. a backslider.

  537. A backslider

  538. is someone

  539. who's walked

  540. with Jesus

  541. but who's

  542. fallen away.

  543. So

  544. not completely

  545. just fallen

  546. away for a time

  547. and in this

  548. moment

  549. Peter

  550. is a lapsed

  551. Christian.

  552. Someone who

  553. confessed Jesus

  554. and then denied

  555. Jesus.

  556. Peter was a

  557. backslider

  558. and here

  559. in this passage

  560. we see

  561. that is very

  562. much a possibility

  563. for Christians.

  564. It's a warning

  565. for us.

  566. A sobering

  567. warning.

  568. This moment

  569. of the red

  570. carpet

  571. tells about

  572. what the cross

  573. will be like.

  574. we learn

  575. the cross

  576. is something

  577. we will be

  578. tempted to

  579. be ashamed

  580. of,

  581. to deny,

  582. to walk

  583. away from

  584. and that

  585. might be

  586. like you

  587. this evening.

  588. You might

  589. be like

  590. Peter

  591. and you

  592. grew up

  593. as a Christian

  594. and you

  595. confessed

  596. Jesus as the

  597. Christ

  598. but you've

  599. now walked

  600. away

  601. or you're

  602. living in

  603. sin and

  604. you're not

  605. willing to

  606. return.

  607. People may

  608. ask you

  609. if you

  610. know

  611. Jesus

  612. and you

  613. would

  614. deny

  615. it

  616. even

  617. though

  618. you

  619. might

  620. have

  621. before

  622. but you

  623. are here

  624. tonight

  625. in church

  626. like Peter

  627. you're

  628. still in

  629. the courtyard

  630. and you

  631. can't let

  632. go of

  633. Jesus

  634. entirely.

  635. Well learn

  636. from Peter

  637. tonight

  638. there is

  639. still hope

  640. for you.

  641. There's

  642. forgiveness

  643. for those

  644. who have

  645. denied

  646. Christ

  647. or maybe

  648. you know

  649. someone like

  650. that

  651. and they're

  652. on your

  653. heart

  654. and you

  655. pray for

  656. them

  657. and you

  658. long for

  659. them to

  660. return

  661. this is

  662. all the

  663. more reason

  664. to pray

  665. for them.

  666. We don't

  667. know the

  668. Lord's

  669. will

  670. but we

  671. see even

  672. with someone

  673. like Peter

  674. someone who

  675. has denied

  676. Christ this

  677. publicly

  678. and aggressively

  679. they can

  680. return

  681. and if that

  682. is you

  683. tonight

  684. you can

  685. come back

  686. to Christ

  687. he knows

  688. your sin

  689. and he

  690. wants you

  691. to return

  692. it may

  693. feel shameful

  694. coming back

  695. to church

  696. and you

  697. might be

  698. worried about

  699. what people

  700. think

  701. but we

  702. won't be

  703. shocked

  704. we will

  705. rejoice

  706. forgiveness

  707. was for

  708. Peter

  709. and it

  710. can be

  711. for you

  712. too

  713. but this

  714. also goes

  715. for all

  716. those in

  717. Christ

  718. any

  719. Christian

  720. here today

  721. there is

  722. great

  723. hope

  724. and forgiveness

  725. for the

  726. failed

  727. Christian

  728. for any

  729. believer

  730. here tonight

  731. we can

  732. so easily

  733. feel like

  734. Peter

  735. can't we

  736. we look

  737. at our

  738. sin

  739. we look

  740. how we've

  741. fallen

  742. and maybe

  743. you have

  744. a particular

  745. sin in

  746. mind

  747. when I

  748. say that

  749. and we

  750. think about

  751. it

  752. and we

  753. think

  754. how could

  755. I have

  756. done that

  757. how could

  758. I have

  759. done that

  760. to Christ

  761. and we

  762. weep

  763. over what

  764. we've done

  765. and it

  766. pains us

  767. well there

  768. is astounding

  769. forgiveness

  770. for you

  771. you're not

  772. some sort

  773. of lost

  774. cause

  775. no the

  776. cross

  777. is still

  778. and always

  779. will be

  780. your salvation

  781. the cross

  782. is salvation

  783. for sinners

  784. exactly like

  785. you

  786. as we

  787. stand by

  788. this red

  789. carpet

  790. we see

  791. that Jesus

  792. is heading

  793. to the

  794. cross

  795. for failed

  796. Christians

  797. not perfect

  798. Christians

  799. not sinless

  800. Christians

  801. no Jesus

  802. went to

  803. the cross

  804. for Peter

  805. he went

  806. to the cross

  807. for Christians

  808. like me

  809. and you

  810. failed

  811. Christians

  812. and there

  813. is astounding

  814. forgiveness

  815. for us

  816. Jesus

  817. carried the

  818. weight of

  819. shocking sins

  820. on his

  821. shoulders

  822. even the

  823. sin of

  824. denial

  825. and he

  826. did it

  827. knowing how

  828. bad our

  829. sin is

  830. so yes

  831. this is an

  832. ugly passage

  833. but in so

  834. many ways

  835. it is

  836. beautiful

  837. there is

  838. hope

  839. for

  840. failed

  841. Christians

  842. a few

  843. years after

  844. this scene

  845. in the

  846. courtyard

  847. the apostle

  848. Peter

  849. this man

  850. in the

  851. courtyard

  852. he wrote

  853. these words

  854. he himself

  855. bore our

  856. sins in

  857. his body

  858. on the

  859. tree

  860. what sin

  861. did he

  862. bear on

  863. that tree

  864. it was

  865. this sin

  866. and it

  867. was our

  868. sin

  869. those words

  870. were written

  871. by a very

  872. bad sinner

  873. but praise

  874. God

  875. Jesus died

  876. for very

  877. bad sinners

  878. amen

  879. let me pray

  880. to

  881. to

  882. to

  883. to

  884. to
