    Mark 15 chapter mention

  2. It's on page 852.

  3. I'll be looking at verses 16 to 20 this evening.

  4. !

  5. Lord God, help us to see the glory of Christ this evening.

  6. Help us to see the victory that he has won for us on the cross.

  7. And help us to cling to him all the more.

  8. May we find hope and comfort and all that we need in him.

  9. We pray this in his name. Amen.

  10. Amen.

  11. In 2003, Banksy, the famous street artist,

  12. he painted an iconic parachuting rat on the side of a building in Melbourne, Australia.

  13. And it was a treasured piece of work in Australia.

  14. And many consider it a priceless piece of art.

  15. But one day in 2010, the local council came along.

  16. They saw the spray paint and they destroyed it by cleaning it off.

  17. They thought it was some sort of gang-related graffiti.

  18. And so they destroyed it.

  19. And they thought they were doing the world good by getting rid of it, didn't they?

  20. But what were they actually doing?

  21. They were actually destroying a masterpiece.

  22. There was a real irony here.

  23. They had no idea what they were doing.

  24. And that is what's going on in our passage here.

  25. These soldiers think that they were doing the world good by getting rid of Jesus.

  26. By mocking him.

  27. They thought he deserved it.

  28. But what was the reality?

  29. They were actually destroying a masterpiece.

  30. There is a real irony here.

  31. Now, irony, the word irony is a word I want us to think about for a moment.

  32. Irony in storytelling is when the characters in a story think something isn't true.

  33. But we, the audience, we know that it is true.

  34. That's what irony is.

  35. So think of the film Jaws.

  36. People are swimming in the sea.

  37. They think it's safe.

  38. They think everything's normal.

  39. But then we, the audience, we hear something.

  40. Dun, dun, dun, dun, dun, dun.

  41. We know the reality.

  42. We hear that music.

  43. And we know the reality that there's a shark in the water.

  44. We, the audience, know the reality is the opposite of what the characters think.

  45. That is irony.

  46. That is dramatic irony.

  47. And that is what Mark is doing in this passage.

  48. He's presenting a moment of dramatic irony.

  49. The soldiers mock Jesus by pretending he's a king.

  50. And they make fun of him.

  51. But actually, he is the king.

  52. So look at the scene here.

  53. So verse 16, Jesus is led inside a palace.

  54. And they gather together the whole battalion around him.

  55. He's like a king over an army.

  56. And verse 17, they clothed him in a purple cloak.

  57. Purple was a very expensive and royal color in those days.

  58. They put royal robes on him.

  59. In verse 17, twisting together a crown of thorns, they put it on him.

  60. He's crowned.

  61. Verse 18, they began to salute him.

  62. And what do they call him?

  63. Hail, king of the Jews.

  64. Verse 19, they struck him on the head, spat on him, knelt down in homage to him.

  65. They bow down to him.

  66. What do these soldiers think is the reality?

  67. They think this man is no king.

  68. They dress him up as a king to show everyone how unkingly he is.

  69. But what is the reality?

  70. What are we meant to know?

  71. This is actually the king.

  72. They think they're doing good, but they're destroying a masterpiece.

  73. They think everything is normal, but we hear the real music.

  74. But it's not the Jaws theme music.

  75. It's the music of a coronation.

  76. It's trumpets and horns and choirs and harps and violins and a royal band, all signaling to us,

  77. this is actually the king.

  78. That is what Mark is presenting us with here.

  79. This is dramatic irony.

  80. He's doing this to emphasize that Jesus is actually the king.

  81. And he's doing this to make a point, to show us the reality of what the soldiers missed,

  82. to show us what's really going on at the cross.

  83. So the past few weeks, we've seen that all the events leading up to the cross have been there to show us what's really happening at the cross.

  84. They're kind of like a red carpet.

  85. You look at the red carpet, and it tells you what's going on at the main event.

  86. And we've seen these events, and we've seen what's going on at the cross.

  87. Jesus is dying for sinners.

  88. He's being condemned by the divine judge so that rebels go free.

  89. Well, here we see something else about the cross.

  90. We see that the cross was the enthronement of Jesus.

  91. It's where he became king.

  92. And that is the big thing to see today, that the cross was the enthronement of Jesus.

  93. But before we unpack that,

  94. we need to see that dramatic irony like this,

  95. it only works if there's an author behind it.

  96. This scene only makes sense and has meaning if it's designed to be like this.

  97. This isn't just a coincidence that these soldiers mock the true king by dressing him up as a king.

  98. Note, there's an author behind this.

  99. But Mark is not the real author of these events.

  100. Mark didn't make these events happen.

  101. No, God is the author of these events.

  102. This was all planned by God.

  103. The cross was planned by God.

  104. And this is the first thing I want us to see today before we get to our main point.

  105. The cross was planned by God.

  106. In all these events we have seen so far,

  107. all these red carpet moments that show us the main event,

  108. the cross, what it's all about,

  109. all these events,

  110. they're not,

  111. this isn't just coincidence.

  112. It's not like,

  113. oh, Jesus was condemned by Pilate.

  114. Oh, and he was condemned by God.

  115. Oh, that's a funny coincidence.

  116. Or, oh, Jesus is mocked as a king,

  117. and he's the true king.

  118. Oh, that's a funny coincidence.

  119. No, this isn't Mark just making up poetic connections.

  120. No, these events took place the way they did,

  121. and they all point to the cross because God planned it.

  122. God authored all of this to show the world what the cross is really about.

  123. And we need to grasp this.

  124. The cross was planned by God.

  125. And we see this all the way back in the Old Testament.

  126. Isaiah 53 speaks of this suffering servant

  127. who will save his people by suffering for them.

  128. Speaking of Jesus.

  129. And Isaiah writes,

  130. it was the will of the Lord to crush him.

  131. It was God's will to crush Jesus.

  132. God crushed his own son.

  133. It was in God's will to do this.

  134. The cross wasn't an unfortunate accident.

  135. No, it was the son's will and the father's will

  136. for Jesus to go to the cross.

  137. It was in God's plan.

  138. It was always his desire.

  139. The cross was planned by God.

  140. And in the New Testament,

  141. the apostle Peter preaches at Pentecost,

  142. and he says this,

  143. Jesus was delivered up according to the definite plan

  144. and foreknowledge of God.

  145. It's clear.

  146. The cross was planned by God.

  147. This wasn't an unfortunate accident

  148. that God then turned into a good thing.

  149. No, the cross was planned by God from eternity

  150. to be salvation,

  151. to be the way that Jesus becomes king.

  152. It was God's will to make his son king.

  153. That was his will in heaven.

  154. And God has constructed all these events

  155. so that his will would be done on earth

  156. as it is in heaven.

  157. So that heaven played out on earth.

  158. His will in heaven can be seen in his will on earth.

  159. These earthly events show us

  160. the true spiritual heavenly reality.

  161. That is why the earthly court with Pilate

  162. shows us the heavenly court of God's justice.

  163. And that is why today,

  164. these soldiers mocking Jesus

  165. shows us the reality of the cross.

  166. This happened because God wanted to show us something,

  167. something about Jesus and the cross.

  168. God is showing us actually

  169. the cross is Jesus' enthronement.

  170. The cross was the enthronement of Jesus.

  171. Which brings us back to our main point,

  172. which is where we're going to spend the rest of our time,

  173. back to our main point.

  174. The cross was the enthronement of Jesus.

  175. So we need to answer now,

  176. well, how was the cross the enthronement of Jesus?

  177. We can kind of see how he was a sacrifice, can't we?

  178. Sacrifices need to die for sins.

  179. We can kind of see how he's a substitute, right?

  180. He died instead of sinners.

  181. But how was the cross the enthronement of Jesus?

  182. How does that make him a king?

  183. As the soldiers place a crown of thorn on Jesus,

  184. why is Mark telling us that,

  185. well, Jesus is actually a king?

  186. Well, we need to understand what a king does.

  187. A king does two things.

  188. A king defeats his enemies,

  189. and a king rules his people.

  190. A king defeats his enemies,

  191. and a king rules his people.

  192. And ever since the fall,

  193. the world has desperately needed a king.

  194. A king to defeat the enemies of the world,

  195. and a king to rule the people of this world.

  196. So let's ask, why is the world today the way it is?

  197. It's because we're needing a king to completely rule over this world.

  198. In the fall, we rejected God as king.

  199. We didn't want God to rule over us,

  200. and instead we chose to follow Satan.

  201. And we let sin rule over us instead.

  202. Sin controlled us and governed us.

  203. It had power over us.

  204. Paul says in Romans,

  205. sin reigned in death.

  206. Sin was a king over us.

  207. It reigned.

  208. We were slaves to sin.

  209. That is the problem of this world.

  210. Sin reigns.

  211. It has a king-like grip over the world.

  212. When sin reigns,

  213. we can't help but sin.

  214. Sin is king in the lives of those without Christ.

  215. Lives are destroyed in this life,

  216. and perish in the next,

  217. because sin is king over them.

  218. And because sin reigned over us,

  219. death reigned over us.

  220. The wages of sin is death,

  221. and so death reigned.

  222. Without Christ,

  223. death is like a king over us.

  224. We can't escape it.

  225. We simply do what it says.

  226. We die.

  227. Without Christ,

  228. death has dominion over us.

  229. And not only that,

  230. in the fall,

  231. Satan was let loose into this world.

  232. He's been like a king over us.

  233. Jesus calls him the ruler of this world.

  234. Paul calls him the prince of the power of the air.

  235. Satan's evil forces are called rulers and authorities in this world.

  236. Satan is the enemy of God,

  237. and he's the opposing king in this world.

  238. And so, while this is God's world,

  239. he's in complete control.

  240. He's always the king of creation.

  241. Satan has had a king-like influence over us.

  242. He's had power over us,

  243. making us follow him,

  244. leading us into sin and evil,

  245. and he's accusing us in our sin.

  246. And eventually,

  247. he seeks to drag us to hell.

  248. Death.

  249. This is what's wrong with the world.

  250. These are the enemies.

  251. It's sin, death,

  252. Satan, and hell.

  253. And what do we need?

  254. We need a king to defeat them.

  255. The world has been in desperate need

  256. to end the reign of these enemies,

  257. to end their power,

  258. and to destroy them.

  259. And we need a good king to come in and rule.

  260. The world needs a king to be enthroned.

  261. And in Mark today,

  262. we see that long-awaited king.

  263. Mark is telling us,

  264. this is that king.

  265. While the soldiers think they're mocking Jesus,

  266. what is the music that we hear?

  267. It's trumpets.

  268. It's a royal band,

  269. a king's coronation.

  270. The cross was the enthronement of Jesus.

  271. But if a king defeats enemies,

  272. and a king rules his people,

  273. how does the cross do that?

  274. How does that make Jesus king?

  275. Well, for those in Christ,

  276. on the cross,

  277. our sin was taken off us

  278. and laid on Jesus.

  279. He bore our sins.

  280. He became sin for us.

  281. And so when Jesus died,

  282. he took all our sin to the grave with him.

  283. It was destroyed.

  284. It was dealt with.

  285. So whatever sin,

  286. whatever reign sin had over you,

  287. it's ended.

  288. It's dead.

  289. Sin had guilt over you,

  290. but that was buried,

  291. dead,

  292. in the grave.

  293. There is no guilt living over you.

  294. But also,

  295. sin's power over you

  296. has now been broken.

  297. before,

  298. we couldn't help but sin.

  299. Sin was king over us,

  300. reigned over us,

  301. but on the cross,

  302. Jesus tore that king

  303. off the throne of our hearts.

  304. He broke the power of sin.

  305. So we can now obey God.

  306. We can now stop sinning.

  307. That king's sin

  308. no longer reigns over you.

  309. Now,

  310. it needs to be said,

  311. that doesn't mean Christians

  312. will never sin.

  313. No,

  314. sin will still dwell in us

  315. until glory.

  316. But it does mean

  317. the power,

  318. the reign of sin

  319. is broken.

  320. For those in Christ,

  321. sin is not king

  322. over your heart now.

  323. Jesus is king

  324. over your heart now.

  325. He rules over you.

  326. The love for Jesus

  327. and the desire

  328. to please him

  329. and serve him

  330. and obey him,

  331. that has power

  332. over you now.

  333. When you come to the cross,

  334. you come to a king

  335. and his love

  336. grips your heart.

  337. He becomes your king.

  338. Sin has been dethroned

  339. in your life.

  340. Jesus now reigns.

  341. So if you don't have Christ

  342. as your king here tonight,

  343. you need to know,

  344. you may think you're free,

  345. but actually sin reigns over you.

  346. You have a king

  347. that you don't realize

  348. and Christ can set you free.

  349. You need a better

  350. and perfect king.

  351. So don't be like these soldiers.

  352. Don't miss the king

  353. in front of you.

  354. Come to the cross.

  355. The cross was the enthronement

  356. of Jesus.

  357. But sin

  358. wasn't the only enemy

  359. defeated on the cross.

  360. Satan was defeated

  361. on the cross.

  362. Do you know what

  363. Satan's name means?

  364. Do you know what Satan means?

  365. Satan means

  366. the accuser.

  367. The power of Satan

  368. is to accuse.

  369. He's like an evil lawyer

  370. who sees your sin

  371. and your guilt

  372. and accuses you

  373. before God.

  374. Look what this person did.

  375. Look what they deserve.

  376. And he leads us into more sin

  377. to accuse us all the more.

  378. Satan's power in this world

  379. is to accuse.

  380. Accuses of the debt

  381. we owe

  382. because of our sin.

  383. But Paul tells us

  384. what happened on the cross.

  385. Jesus cancelled

  386. the record of debt

  387. that stood against us

  388. with its legal demands.

  389. This he set aside

  390. nailing it to the cross.

  391. He disarmed

  392. the rulers

  393. and authorities

  394. and put them

  395. to open shame

  396. by triumphing over them.

  397. On the cross

  398. Christ

  399. took the accuser's power

  400. away from him.

  401. He disarmed him.

  402. How?

  403. Because there is nothing

  404. Satan can accuse you

  405. with anymore.

  406. There is no sin

  407. reigning over you.

  408. There is no guilt

  409. hanging over you.

  410. As you stand before

  411. the judgment seat of God

  412. Satan can accuse you

  413. all he likes.

  414. It means nothing.

  415. Because all your sin

  416. has been paid for

  417. Satan can say

  418. nothing about you

  419. before God.

  420. Christ is our king

  421. and on the cross

  422. he has disarmed Satan.

  423. Taken away his weapons

  424. destroyed his power.

  425. Satan has nothing on you.

  426. And now

  427. Satan is just

  428. awaiting his doom

  429. where he will be

  430. gone forever.

  431. And that day

  432. is certain

  433. because Christ

  434. has already conquered

  435. him on the cross.

  436. And so if you're not

  437. a Christian here today

  438. without Christ

  439. Satan can still

  440. accuse you.

  441. He can bring

  442. charges against you

  443. and God will see

  444. those charges

  445. and he'll see

  446. them as true.

  447. Your sin

  448. is not covered

  449. by Christ.

  450. The legal demands

  451. still weigh on you

  452. and you need

  453. a king

  454. to disarm

  455. Satan.

  456. To destroy

  457. any power

  458. he has

  459. to accuse you.

  460. Christ is the king

  461. who disarms

  462. all the weapons

  463. of Satan.

  464. He's disarmed

  465. his accusations

  466. and he's also

  467. disarmed

  468. death itself.

  469. Hebrews says

  470. Jesus destroyed

  471. the one

  472. who has the power

  473. of death.

  474. That is the devil.

  475. When the devil

  476. accuses you

  477. he accuses you

  478. for the punishment

  479. of death.

  480. The wages of sin

  481. is death.

  482. Death is his weapon

  483. as well.

  484. But if there's

  485. no guilt

  486. then there's

  487. no death.

  488. When Christ

  489. dealt with your guilt

  490. he ended

  491. the reign

  492. of death

  493. over you.

  494. Death looks

  495. like it has

  496. its grip

  497. on this world.

  498. Like it

  499. rains,

  500. like it's

  501. winning.

  502. And yes

  503. unless Christ

  504. returns

  505. we will

  506. all die.

  507. But death

  508. will not

  509. win.

  510. Death

  511. has been

  512. dethroned.

  513. Eternal

  514. life is

  515. coming.

  516. That is what

  517. Christ did on

  518. the cross.

  519. He made sure

  520. death will

  521. no longer

  522. rule in this

  523. world.

  524. And who

  525. rules instead?

  526. death,

  527. a new ruler

  528. full of life.

  529. Eternal

  530. life.

  531. He now

  532. reigns over

  533. this world.

  534. The gracious

  535. king who

  536. holds the keys

  537. of death

  538. in Hades.

  539. It's

  540. Jesus Christ.

  541. And he's

  542. conquered death

  543. so that

  544. one day

  545. death will

  546. be no more.

  547. Not just

  548. dethroned

  549. but gone.

  550. Jesus has

  551. defeated the

  552. enemy of

  553. death for

  554. you.

  555. The cross

  556. was the

  557. enthronement

  558. of Jesus.

  559. Did you

  560. see what

  561. they placed

  562. on Jesus'

  563. head in

  564. verse 17?

  565. Twisting

  566. together a

  567. crown of

  568. thorns

  569. they put it

  570. on him.

  571. It's no

  572. coincidence

  573. it's a

  574. crown of

  575. thorns.

  576. Do you

  577. remember what

  578. was a part

  579. of the curse

  580. in Genesis

  581. 3?

  582. Cursed

  583. is the

  584. ground

  585. because of

  586. you.

  587. Thorns

  588. and

  589. thistles

  590. it shall

  591. bring forth

  592. for you.

  593. Jesus

  594. carried the

  595. curse of

  596. the world

  597. thorns

  598. on his

  599. head as

  600. he went

  601. to the

  602. cross.

  603. This is

  604. the spiritual

  605. reality.

  606. Jesus

  607. freed the

  608. world from

  609. its curse.

  610. He's a

  611. king who

  612. rescued not

  613. just his

  614. people from

  615. their curse.

  616. He rescued

  617. the whole

  618. universe.

  619. So when

  620. these soldiers

  621. salute Jesus

  622. and say

  623. hail king

  624. of the

  625. Jews

  626. how right

  627. they were

  628. but also

  629. they had no

  630. idea what

  631. they were

  632. saying.

  633. This isn't

  634. just king

  635. of the

  636. Jews.

  637. This is

  638. the king

  639. of the

  640. universe.

  641. As they

  642. place the

  643. purple cloak

  644. on Jesus

  645. the royal

  646. robes

  647. as they

  648. place the

  649. crown of

  650. thorns

  651. on him

  652. as they

  653. salute

  654. him

  655. as they

  656. kneel

  657. before him

  658. they think

  659. they're

  660. mocking

  661. him

  662. but really

  663. their actions

  664. are showing

  665. the world

  666. this is the

  667. king to

  668. restore the

  669. world.

  670. world.

  671. So this

  672. irony that

  673. we see

  674. here it's

  675. really

  676. significant.

  677. This is

  678. telling us

  679. something huge.

  680. This is the

  681. king God

  682. has planned

  683. to bring.

  684. This is how

  685. the world is

  686. going to be

  687. restored and

  688. ruled again.

  689. And what's

  690. even more

  691. ironic

  692. this mockery

  693. was actually

  694. sending Jesus

  695. to his

  696. enthronement

  697. wasn't it?

  698. they led

  699. him out

  700. sent him

  701. out to

  702. be crucified.

  703. These

  704. soldiers

  705. thought they

  706. were nailing

  707. him to

  708. a cross

  709. but they

  710. were seating

  711. him on

  712. a throne.

  713. And now

  714. Jesus rules

  715. over his

  716. people as

  717. we come to

  718. the cross

  719. and find

  720. forgiveness.

  721. It is at

  722. the cross

  723. the enemies

  724. of sin

  725. and Satan

  726. and death

  727. are defeated

  728. for us.

  729. And it's at

  730. the cross

  731. we find a

  732. new king.

  733. A king

  734. who rules

  735. over us

  736. with grace.

  737. We become

  738. a people

  739. united around

  740. this crucified

  741. king.

  742. He's purchased

  743. a people

  744. with his

  745. blood and

  746. now we

  747. belong to

  748. him and

  749. we joyfully

  750. serve this

  751. king.

  752. It is the

  753. cross,

  754. this man,

  755. this message,

  756. this crucified

  757. king that

  758. sends us to

  759. our knees

  760. in wonder.

  761. It is this

  762. king that

  763. gathers us

  764. here today

  765. in worship

  766. and now we

  767. bow before

  768. him in awe

  769. before the

  770. king of

  771. kings.

  772. So don't

  773. be like these

  774. soldiers,

  775. don't miss

  776. what is right

  777. in front of

  778. you.

  779. The cross

  780. was the

  781. enthronement

  782. of Jesus

  783. and now he

  784. reigns as

  785. king of

  786. kings.

  787. Let me

  788. pray.

  789. pray.

  790. Let me

  791. pray.

  792. Let me

  793. pray.

  794. Let me

  795. pray.

  796. Let me

  797. pray.

  798. Let me
