  1. Good morning.

  2. And please, if you would turn to our passage this morning.

  3. ! I think in your Bibles, page 825, Matthew chapter 20 and verse 17.

    Matthew 20 chapter mention

  4. If you would keep that open in front of you.

  5. And let me pray before we hear God's word.

  6. Our heavenly Father, not my words, but your eternal word.

  7. Not our understanding, but your Holy Spirit.

  8. Not our knowledge, but your wisdom and what you would reveal to us.

  9. For your glory alone. Amen.

  10. The ability to pay attention would seem a vanishing commodity.

  11. I know it's getting harder and harder in my life.

  12. It's probably the same for you.

  13. In fact, it's getting harder and harder that people are even writing books about it.

  14. And in his book by Matthew Crawford, The World Beyond Your Head,

  15. which on reflection I decided was probably a pretty good title for this sermon.

  16. He quotes from a commencement speech given by the writer David Foster Wallace at Kenyon College some years ago.

  17. Who was commenting on the problem faced by most human beings of being too wrapped up in themselves.

  18. He began thus.

  19. He said,

  20. A huge percentage of the stuff that I tend to automatically be certain of,

  21. it turns out, is totally wrong and deluded.

  22. In particular, everything in my immediate experience supports my deep belief that I am the absolute center of the universe.

  23. He went on,

  24. What needs to happen is to somehow alter or get free of my natural hardwired default setting,

  25. which is to be deeply and literally self-centered,

  26. and sees and interprets everything through this lens of self.

  27. And he concluded that he desires not to be deluded,

  28. not lost in abstract argument inside my own head,

  29. instead of paying attention to what is going on right in front of me.

  30. And that is a problem, isn't it, of modern life,

  31. paying attention to the wrong thing,

  32. not paying attention to what's going on right in front of us.

  33. It's essentially not a problem of failing to pay attention whatsoever,

  34. but failing to pay attention to the right thing,

  35. and paying attention only to ourselves,

  36. the world inside our own heads, we might say.

  37. But this is not a new problem.

  38. In our passage, and in fact the preceding chapters,

  39. 2,000 years ago Jesus gave a sermon on what the kingdom of God was like,

  40. about what true greatness was, about what it was like.

  41. But the people, the disciples who heard it,

  42. could only concern themselves with how great that they could be.

  43. They were only concerned about their kingdoms.

  44. Jesus spent the previous two chapters,

  45. from verse 13 of chapter 19,

  46. if you quickly glance down,

  47. that famous passage of the children coming to Jesus,

  48. summarizing the character of the coming kingdom.

  49. And it's summed up in those,

  50. a verse that is repeated,

  51. a very famous verse,

  52. but many who are first will be last,

  53. and the last will be first,

  54. and then verse 16 of chapter 20,

  55. it says, so the last will be first,

  56. and the first will be last.

  57. Why it's swapped around,

  58. I couldn't tell you.

  59. It's probably something significant.

  60. But certainly that it was repeated,

  61. was because Jesus wanted to tell something to his disciples,

  62. and he wanted them to know it.

  63. Our passage also begins with Jesus talking about

  64. how he was going to die a painful and humiliating death on a cross.

  65. But this isn't the first time he's said this to the disciples.

  66. It's the third time in Matthew's Gospel.

  67. And just finally, just so that we will pay attention,

  68. because I think God is trying to say something in this passage,

  69. for the reason is that this is repeated both in Mark and in Luke,

  70. almost verbatim, the passage that we have today.

  71. You'd think he's trying to tell us something.

  72. And it's not just that the prophecy of Jesus' death, as I say,

  73. is the most important aspect to focus on here,

  74. because it bookends the passage that we have.

  75. In between teaching about spiritual ambition

  76. is about Jesus' death.

  77. And that's why I want to talk about attention today,

  78. because it's more than just an example of poor taste

  79. or crass insensitivity on behalf of the disciples

  80. and James and John's mother.

  81. What's really at the heart of the verses here

  82. is not the disciples or us,

  83. but it's about Jesus.

  84. But the Jesus that we're asked to pay attention to

  85. is not an easy example.

  86. Verse 18,

  87. See, we are going up to Jerusalem,

  88. and the Son of Man will be delivered over

  89. to the chief priests and the scribes,

  90. and they will condemn him to death,

  91. and deliver him over to the Gentiles

  92. to be mocked and flogged and crucified,

  93. and he will be raised on the third day.

  94. Jesus had been talking about his kingdom,

  95. the kingdom of God.

  96. And for the disciples,

  97. and in fact any Jew listening,

  98. a kingdom would have been just what they wanted to hear about.

  99. Any kingdom, as long as it wasn't a Roman kingdom,

  100. which they had been under for quite some time.

  101. But then Jesus here talks about

  102. not only being killed and put to death by the Romans,

  103. but also being condemned to death

  104. by the Jewish authorities also.

  105. Jesus' words make clear

  106. that this would be a total rejection of him.

  107. So that even if there was a Jew,

  108. the Jewish authorities,

  109. who would be the establishment of the day,

  110. they are going to reject him too,

  111. as well as the Romans.

  112. So there's no glorious triumph

  113. as far as the disciples are concerned

  114. here in this death of what's going to happen.

  115. It was a humiliating death.

  116. And one more that was going to happen

  117. in Jerusalem itself,

  118. on the eve of them going up

  119. in the city of God,

  120. the centre of the Jewish religion and nation.

  121. It's a bit like

  122. Serena Vigman when she first took over

  123. the England women's football team.

  124. I don't know if they've won.

  125. I don't know if it's still going on at the moment.

  126. But let's just imagine the scene.

  127. She goes into the dressing room,

  128. disappointing results,

  129. and she says,

  130. right, I'm going to take you to the World Cup final.

  131. And she says,

  132. I'm going to teach you a bit about football

  133. and skills and stuff like that.

  134. But really, the crux of what I want you to learn,

  135. you're going to learn by coming to watch me

  136. every week

  137. clean out a public toilet.

  138. And it's that kind of

  139. incongruency

  140. that kind of

  141. just doesn't make sense

  142. that Jesus' death represents here

  143. for the disciples.

  144. It should, as that kind of death,

  145. even shock us now,

  146. even though we're very familiar with the cross.

  147. The cross now to us is a symbol of hope,

  148. of life.

  149. We make gold crosses.

  150. We put crosses in paintings

  151. all through our culture.

  152. But then that wasn't what the cross meant.

  153. The cross then meant

  154. humiliation,

  155. degradation,

  156. a complete rejection,

  157. and of course, pain.

  158. And so even now,

  159. it should give us pause for thought

  160. about why this was necessary

  161. and what was the cost.

  162. It demands our attention.

  163. And you would have thought

  164. that it would have given the disciples

  165. pause, at least, for thought too.

  166. But instead, we have the scene

  167. that unfolds.

  168. Verse 20,

  169. Then the mother of the sons of Zebedee

  170. came up to him with her sons,

  171. and kneeling before him,

  172. she asked him for something.

  173. And he said to her,

  174. What do you want?

  175. And she said to him,

  176. Say that these two sons of mine

  177. are to sit,

  178. one at your right hand

  179. and one at your left,

  180. in your kingdom.

  181. Now, one partial explanation

  182. for this may be,

  183. it's not certain,

  184. but it might,

  185. it's,

  186. a lot of scholars think

  187. it's probable that

  188. the mother of James and John

  189. was related to

  190. Jesus' mother, Mary.

  191. And it's not unusual,

  192. and it still isn't in many cultures,

  193. in fact,

  194. even our own,

  195. to some extent,

  196. for family to approach

  197. those in authority

  198. and ask them for special preferment

  199. from powerful relatives.

  200. It's one possible explanation.

  201. We don't know for sure.

  202. But whatever it is,

  203. James and John's mother

  204. isn't really the issue here,

  205. because Jesus is not fooled

  206. by her coming to ask.

  207. And in his response,

  208. he immediately uses the plural you

  209. in addressing James and John.

  210. And in fact,

  211. as we see later on

  212. from the disciples,

  213. he's really addressing the disciples.

  214. Jesus answered,

  215. You do not know

  216. what you are asking.

  217. Are you able to drink the cup

  218. that I am to drink?

  219. You see,

  220. he knew what was on their mind.

  221. He knew that when they heard

  222. that there was a kingdom going,

  223. the next thing

  224. that they were thinking was,

  225. what's in it for us?

  226. Just as Peter had done

  227. earlier in chapter 19,

  228. just as the rich young ruler

  229. had done in that same chapter.

  230. After all,

  231. the disciples were,

  232. weren't they,

  233. the chosen ones?

  234. They were the ones

  235. selected by Jesus,

  236. called by him.

  237. They were the ones

  238. who had given up most for him.

  239. They were special,

  240. his oldest followers.

  241. What's in it for us?

  242. And how often,

  243. if we're honest,

  244. do our hearts echo

  245. those sentiments?

  246. Even as mature Christians,

  247. Lord, I've been good

  248. all this time.

  249. I've been faithful.

  250. I've had to give up things.

  251. Maybe a relationship.

  252. Maybe just a Sunday.

  253. Maybe some of my money.

  254. When do I see a return?

  255. What's in it for me?

  256. I've born with people.

  257. I've put up with elders.

  258. I've put up with the

  259. hymn choices

  260. that I don't like

  261. for so long.

  262. And these thoughts,

  263. these turning in on ourselves

  264. to our own concerns,

  265. can come,

  266. as I say,

  267. even when we're mature Christians.

  268. When we might be called

  269. strong in our faith,

  270. just as the disciples were.

  271. James and John's mum,

  272. she was at the foot of the cross

  273. when Jesus died.

  274. The disciples didn't doubt

  275. or have no faith in Jesus

  276. at this point or later.

  277. But it's that temptation,

  278. isn't it,

  279. to listen to,

  280. as Foster Wallace said,

  281. that hardwired default setting,

  282. which is to be deeply

  283. and literally self-centered.

  284. It's there in the disciples.

  285. It's there in us.

  286. Pride,

  287. higher position,

  288. recognition,

  289. status,

  290. can overcome

  291. even the most

  292. resolute of believers.

  293. Interestingly,

  294. John Calvin,

  295. when he was writing

  296. on this passage,

  297. said,

  298. for often depraved thoughts

  299. and feelings

  300. come over us

  301. in the middle of the race

  302. and turn us off course.

  303. Such a thought

  304. is enough to make

  305. any one of us despair,

  306. perhaps,

  307. because it's true

  308. that we're all

  309. as self-centered

  310. as disciples.

  311. But I want to now

  312. come on

  313. and we'll see in this passage

  314. why ultimately

  315. we should not despair.

  316. Because it's not,

  317. as I say,

  318. about the disciples

  319. and about us,

  320. it's ultimately about Jesus

  321. and how we are liberated

  322. from this conflict

  323. that goes on

  324. inside our own heads

  325. and hearts.

  326. And we see Jesus' response,

  327. isn't it?

  328. It's gentle.

  329. It's an encouragement

  330. in many ways.

  331. Verse 22.

  332. You do not know

  333. what you are asking.

  334. Are you able

  335. to drink the cup

  336. that I am to drink?

  337. And they said,

  338. we are able.

  339. And he said to them,

  340. you will drink my cup,

  341. but to sit at my right hand

  342. and my left

  343. is not mine to grant,

  344. but it is for those

  345. who have been prepared

  346. by my Father.

  347. Are you able?

  348. We are able.

  349. And this shows us

  350. the amazing

  351. and wonderful paradox

  352. of the Christian life,

  353. the yes we can

  354. that goes with

  355. the no we can't.

  356. Could anyone

  357. drink the cup

  358. of God's wrath

  359. except Jesus?

  360. No, of course not.

  361. Could anybody

  362. satisfy God's wrath

  363. and anger for sin

  364. and make atonement

  365. for our sin?

  366. No.

  367. But yet James and John

  368. did suffer for Christ.

  369. They're two of the

  370. earliest martyrs.

  371. We read about James

  372. being killed in Acts 12.

  373. John was only exiled,

  374. but he suffered

  375. through the course

  376. of his life.

  377. Both suffered greatly

  378. for bearing witness

  379. to Christ.

  380. And so in a sense,

  381. they were able

  382. to share in Christ's cup.

  383. And in so far

  384. that that is true,

  385. we are all called

  386. to share in Christ's cup,

  387. in Christ's suffering.

  388. Paul in Philippians

  389. talks of the fellowship

  390. of his sufferings,

  391. the fellowship

  392. of his sufferings.

  393. Jesus himself

  394. has just said

  395. in chapter 16,

  396. if anyone wishes

  397. to come after me,

  398. he must deny himself

  399. and take up his cross

  400. and follow me.

  401. It was a hard saying

  402. for those who heard it then.

  403. It's a hard saying

  404. for us now.

  405. But James and John

  406. and the other disciples

  407. and countless Christians

  408. down the century

  409. show us that through

  410. listening to Christ's teaching

  411. and the work of the Holy Spirit,

  412. we are equipped to share

  413. in his sufferings

  414. as well as in his glory.

  415. As I said,

  416. it's important to remember

  417. both the can and the cannot

  418. of the Christian life.

  419. We need to understand both.

  420. One, the can that we can

  421. imitate our Lord

  422. in his suffering

  423. and in his sacrifice.

  424. The cannot that we cannot

  425. take his place.

  426. too much emphasis

  427. or teaching on the

  428. yes we can.

  429. Well, that can lead to pride,

  430. arrogance,

  431. perhaps even some sort

  432. of Messiah complex.

  433. Too much emphasis

  434. on the teaching

  435. that we can't.

  436. It's all Jesus.

  437. It can lead to lethargy,

  438. complacency,

  439. and perhaps even

  440. a kind of despair

  441. or spiritual depression.

  442. We can and we can't.

  443. It's a question of degree.

  444. Jesus, again,

  445. is calling us back

  446. out of ourselves

  447. to pay attention to him.

  448. Only through looking to him,

  449. learning from him,

  450. calling on him,

  451. are we equipped

  452. for the Christian life

  453. and its highs and nos.

  454. All through this passage,

  455. Jesus is saying,

  456. look at me,

  457. pay attention to me.

  458. So I think

  459. there's two areas

  460. of application for us.

  461. Firstly,

  462. to pay attention

  463. to each other

  464. and secondly,

  465. to pay attention

  466. to Jesus.

  467. Pay attention

  468. to each other

  469. because glory

  470. looks like a servant.

  471. Jesus teaches

  472. his disciples,

  473. doesn't he,

  474. after calling them out.

  475. But,

  476. you know that the rulers

  477. of the Gentiles

  478. lord it over them

  479. and their great ones

  480. exercise authority

  481. over them.

  482. It shall not be so

  483. among you.

  484. But whoever

  485. will be great

  486. among you

  487. must be your servant

  488. and whoever

  489. will be first

  490. among you

  491. must be your slave.

  492. James and John

  493. had not asked themselves

  494. how they could build

  495. the kingdom of God

  496. but I hope

  497. it's a question

  498. that we would ask ourselves.

  499. I hope

  500. and I believe

  501. we all do

  502. want to help

  503. build God's kingdom.

  504. And what Jesus

  505. is teaching here

  506. is that to build

  507. the kingdom

  508. we must first

  509. serve the kingdom.

  510. To build the kingdom

  511. we must serve

  512. the kingdom.

  513. And building anything

  514. is hard

  515. and dirty work.

  516. When I was thinking

  517. about this

  518. I was thinking

  519. about how I used

  520. to commute

  521. wearing a suit

  522. backwards and forwards

  523. from the city

  524. and pretty much

  525. every evening

  526. you'd stop

  527. at certain stations

  528. the doors would open

  529. the other people

  530. sitting in business

  531. attire

  532. and suddenly

  533. the construction workers

  534. or the builders

  535. would come on.

  536. And they looked

  537. very very different.

  538. They were covered

  539. in dust

  540. hair was everywhere

  541. they had clothes

  542. and boots

  543. that were all

  544. worn away

  545. or dusty

  546. or whatever.

  547. Nails were all chipped.

  548. They're the worst

  549. dressed people there

  550. but they have to

  551. get filthy.

  552. It's part of the job

  553. in all weathers

  554. and they have to work.

  555. They have to be prepared

  556. to hit their thumb

  557. with a hammer

  558. get splinters

  559. or stand in a trench

  560. full of water

  561. digging.

  562. but more than that

  563. they need to be prepared

  564. and the way they look

  565. shows that they are prepared

  566. they need to be prepared

  567. to work

  568. within the physical realities

  569. of the site

  570. that they're

  571. working with

  572. and the materials

  573. that they have to use.

  574. To be a good builder

  575. requires to be

  576. in some sense

  577. a servant

  578. of the physical environment

  579. that you find yourself in

  580. and working with that.

  581. and so too

  582. the kingdom of God.

  583. The kingdom of God

  584. is synonymous

  585. with the people of God

  586. the church.

  587. Jesus says here

  588. that to build

  589. particularly in a position

  590. of leadership

  591. in Christ's kingdom

  592. is to be a servant

  593. a slave

  594. to the human material

  595. that makes up the church

  596. the men and women there

  597. in the place

  598. where you are.

  599. And to do that

  600. we have to pay attention

  601. to others

  602. if we are to build

  603. the kingdom

  604. and be like Christ.

  605. We are called

  606. are we not

  607. to serve others needs

  608. above our own

  609. and to that

  610. we need to know

  611. what their needs are

  612. what the needs

  613. of the church are

  614. we need to pay attention

  615. to each other.

  616. And while Jesus

  617. is talking primarily

  618. about leadership here

  619. it applies to us all

  620. but particularly

  621. in leadership

  622. leaders need to be

  623. not so wrapped up

  624. in their own self image

  625. or their own welfare

  626. or glory

  627. or reputation

  628. that they become

  629. unaware of those

  630. over whom they have

  631. authority.

  632. They above all others

  633. need to pay attention.

  634. Practically

  635. it means two things

  636. I think

  637. one we are not

  638. above anybody

  639. whatever our role

  640. we are called to

  641. in the church

  642. even those in authority

  643. are to think of themselves

  644. not even as equals

  645. but as servants.

  646. And secondly

  647. that we are not

  648. above anything

  649. all service

  650. however menial

  651. is service.

  652. In fact

  653. the more ordinary

  654. the more necessary

  655. it often is

  656. and often

  657. the less noticed.

  658. Paul sums this up

  659. in Philippians

    Philippians 2 chapter mention

  660. chapter 2

  661. do nothing from

  662. selfish ambition

  663. or conceit

  664. but in humility

  665. count others

  666. more significant

  667. than yourselves.

  668. secondly

  669. we are to

  670. pay attention

  671. to Jesus

  672. because glory

  673. authority

  674. looks like Jesus.

  675. Glory and authority

  676. looks like Jesus.

  677. and when we say

  678. we should act

  679. in humility

  680. we can be a servant

  681. and yet we still

  682. recognise

  683. that we are

  684. totally prone

  685. to being inward looking

  686. and thinking

  687. only of ourselves

  688. that can be

  689. a daunting thought

  690. surely if my heart

  691. is so prone

  692. to sin and pride

  693. if I achieve

  694. even humility

  695. won't these things

  696. just become

  697. another source

  698. of pride

  699. another way

  700. to put myself

  701. above others.

  702. We probably know

  703. some Christians

  704. who can show

  705. some of that tendency.

  706. Humble is a very

  707. overused word

  708. these days

  709. I've noticed.

  710. Most people

  711. talk about

  712. being humbled

  713. but I'm not sure

  714. they mean it

  715. and most of them

  716. don't appear

  717. very humble

  718. for very long.

  719. The truth is

  720. that on its own

  721. teaching about

  722. being a servant

  723. or being humble

  724. is impossible

  725. for us.

  726. Impossible.

  727. And this is where

  728. I want you to

  729. remind you of

  730. what I said

  731. at the beginning

  732. this passage

  733. is not about

  734. the disciples

  735. or us

  736. or even

  737. the disciples

  738. mothers

  739. but it's

  740. about Jesus.

  741. Jesus says

  742. to us

  743. I know

  744. this is hard

  745. I know

  746. that better

  747. than you do

  748. but if you

  749. look to me

  750. to my example

  751. you'll be able

  752. to do it.

  753. And verse 28

  754. tells us this

  755. even as the

  756. son of man

  757. came not to

  758. be served

  759. but to serve

  760. and to give

  761. his life

  762. as a ransom

  763. for many.

  764. Jesus is

  765. our example

  766. in this

  767. and it's

  768. worth noting

  769. what the end

  770. the results

  771. of his

  772. service

  773. is

  774. isn't it?

  775. To give

  776. his life

  777. as a ransom

  778. for many.

  779. Christ gave

  780. his life

  781. as a ransom.

  782. He's lived

  783. a life

  784. of service

  785. and he died

  786. on a cross

  787. to liberate

  788. his people

  789. to set us

  790. free

  791. and that's

  792. what service

  793. does.

  794. When we serve

  795. others' needs

  796. in a sense

  797. we do

  798. liberate them.

  799. It's a question

  800. of degree

  801. I'm not saying

  802. as I said

  803. before

  804. that we

  805. can liberate

  806. them like

  807. Christ

  808. but it

  809. works in

  810. the same

  811. way.

  812. It is

  813. similar

  814. to

  815. it is

  816. like

  817. when we

  818. serve each

  819. other

  820. we liberate

  821. them.

  822. Isn't that

  823. a wonderful

  824. thought?

  825. And even

  826. though we

  827. know the

  828. depth of

  829. our pride

  830. and self

  831. centredness

  832. it's not

  833. really one

  834. of the deep

  835. desires of

  836. our hearts

  837. to join

  838. with Jesus

  839. in building

  840. his church

  841. and bringing

  842. freedom

  843. to his

  844. people.

  845. Our

  846. service

  847. like Christ

  848. frees

  849. others.

  850. Which

  851. brings us

  852. back to

  853. where our

  854. true

  855. motivation

  856. and the

  857. source

  858. of our

  859. power

  860. comes

  861. from

  862. that

  863. enables

  864. us to

  865. follow

  866. in

  867. Jesus'

  868. footsteps.

  869. I've

  870. talked

  871. about

  872. paying

  873. attention

  874. to

  875. Jesus

  876. but

  877. really

  878. we

  879. want

  880. to

  881. love

  882. him

  883. don't

  884. we?

  885. And

  886. to

  887. love

  888. him

  889. is

  890. to

  891. pay

  892. attention

  893. to

  894. him.

  895. We

  896. pay

  897. attention

  898. to

  899. the

  900. things

  901. that

  902. we

  903. love.

  904. Or

  905. too

  906. frequently

  907. it's

  908. ourselves

  909. but it

  910. holds

  911. true

  912. in

  913. anything.

  914. It's

  915. about

  916. this

  917. passage

  918. how

  919. Jesus

  920. is

  921. and

  922. how

  923. wonderful

  924. he

  925. is.

  926. It's

  927. about

  928. paying

  929. attention

  930. to

  931. him

  932. something

  933. the

  934. sons

  935. of

  936. Zebedee

  937. and the

  938. other

  939. ten

  940. were

  941. failing

  942. to

  943. do.

  944. And

  945. as I

  946. said

  947. attention

  948. is

  949. very

  950. close

  951. to

  952. love.

  953. In

  954. fact

  955. it

  956. goes

  957. with

  958. love.

  959. Iris

  960. Murdoch

  961. in

  962. the

  963. essay

  964. God

  965. and

  966. the

  967. good

  968. said

  969. this

  970. about

  971. overcoming

  972. negative

  973. influences

  974. or

  975. experiences

  976. in

  977. her

  978. life.

  979. Where

  980. strong

  981. emotions

  982. of

  983. sexual

  984. love

  985. or

  986. of

  987. hatred

  988. or

  989. resentment

  990. or

  991. jealousy

  992. are

  993. concerned

  994. pure

  995. will

  996. can

  997. usually

  998. achieve

  999. little.

  1000. It's

  1001. a small

  1002. use

  1003. telling

  1004. oneself

  1005. stop

  1006. being

  1007. in

  1008. love

  1009. stop

  1010. feeling

  1011. resentment

  1012. be

  1013. just.

  1014. What

  1015. is

  1016. needed

  1017. is a

  1018. reorientation

  1019. which

  1020. will

  1021. provide

  1022. an

  1023. energy

  1024. of a

  1025. different

  1026. kind

  1027. from

  1028. a

  1029. different

  1030. source

  1031. the

  1032. acquiring

  1033. !

  1034. of

  1035. new

  1036. objects

  1037. of

  1038. attention

  1039. and

  1040. thus

  1041. of

  1042. new

  1043. energies

  1044. as a

  1045. result

  1046. of

  1047. refocusing.

  1048. We kind

  1049. of

  1050. know

  1051. this

  1052. when we

  1053. want to

  1054. get out

  1055. of the

  1056. rut

  1057. of

  1058. something

  1059. we need

  1060. to

  1061. replace

  1062. it

  1063. with

  1064. something

  1065. else

  1066. to

  1067. get

  1068. new

  1069. objects

  1070. of

  1071. attention

  1072. that

  1073. give

  1074. us

  1075. new

  1076. energies

  1077. as a

  1078. result

  1079. of

  1080. refocusing.

  1081. The

  1082. disciples

  1083. could

  1084. not

  1085. live

  1086. as

  1087. Jesus

  1088. called

  1089. them

  1090. in

  1091. this

  1092. passage

  1093. in

  1094. their

  1095. own

  1096. strength.

  1097. They

  1098. needed

  1099. to

  1100. look

  1101. outside

  1102. of

  1103. themselves

  1104. to

  1105. Jesus

  1106. a

  1107. reorientation

  1108. away

  1109. from

  1110. the

  1111. normal

  1112. patterns

  1113. of

  1114. their

  1115. human

  1116. hearts

  1117. new

  1118. energies

  1119. as I said

  1120. to use

  1121. Iris

  1122. Murdoch's

  1123. phrase

  1124. from a

  1125. different

  1126. source

  1127. outside

  1128. of

  1129. themselves.

  1130. We

  1131. pay

  1132. attention

  1133. to the

  1134. things

  1135. we love

  1136. to the

  1137. people

  1138. we

  1139. love

  1140. but

  1141. looking

  1142. unto

  1143. Jesus

  1144. paying

  1145. attention

  1146. to

  1147. Jesus

  1148. it

  1149. takes

  1150. us

  1151. out

  1152. of

  1153. ourselves

  1154. it

  1155. takes

  1156. us

  1157. out

  1158. of our

  1159. preoccupations

  1160. with

  1161. pride

  1162. and

  1163. status

  1164. and

  1165. position

  1166. that

  1167. are

  1168. so

  1169. natural

  1170. to

  1171. us

  1172. love

  1173. of

  1174. Jesus

  1175. enables

  1176. us

  1177. to

  1178. focus

  1179. on

  1180. someone

  1181. outside

  1182. of

  1183. ourselves

  1184. to

  1185. see

  1186. him

  1187. in

  1188. his

  1189. death

  1190. and

  1191. resurrection

  1192. as

  1193. our

  1194. model

  1195. and

  1196. as

  1197. our

  1198. savior

  1199. and

  1200. so

  1201. as

  1202. Christians

  1203. to do

  1204. this

  1205. we

  1206. read

  1207. his

  1208. word

  1209. we

  1210. reorientate

  1211. our

  1212. affections

  1213. in

  1214. worship

  1215. on

  1216. the

  1217. Lord's

  1218. day

  1219. we

  1220. see

  1221. his

  1222. body

  1223. the

  1224. church

  1225. as

  1226. ours

  1227. to

  1228. serve

  1229. all

  1230. of

  1231. these

  1232. things

  1233. some

  1234. of

  1235. them

  1236. are

  1237. called

  1238. the

  1239. ordinary

  1240. means

  1241. of

  1242. grace

  1243. what

  1244. we

  1245. do

  1246. every

  1247. day

  1248. to

  1249. take

  1250. us

  1251. out

  1252. of

  1253. ourselves

  1254. and

  1255. we

  1256. pray

  1257. we

  1258. pray

  1259. don't

  1260. we

  1261. pray

  1262. to

  1263. to

  1264. pray

  1265. !

  1266. pray

  1267. !

  1268. pray

  1269. !

  1270. pray

  1271. pray

  1272. pray

  1273. !

1274. properly a petition, it's not a list of requests. Prayer is simply attention to

1275. God which is a form of love. We pay attention to the things that we love, to

1276. Jesus. I've talked a lot about attention. The word attention is interesting, it

1277. doesn't mean, well the root of it doesn't come from a narrow focus or blocking out

1278. everything else and concentrating on one thing. The Latin root is tendere, from

1279. where we get our word tension and it means to stretch, to take out and to

1280. stretch. So I think it's quite helpful in terms of thinking of paying attention to

1281. God that we think of God, of Jesus, as that attachment point for our hearts and

1282. our minds. That we attach to him and it stretches us out of ourselves. And this

1283. is the power of the Christian life for us, even of humble service or even of

1284. suffering. It's the same Saviour whom we love, who we see, who we attend to and he

1285. draws us out of ourselves, out of that internal conflict with ourselves and sets

1286. us free. And as we come to the table now we have another opportunity in a different

1287. way to pay attention to God, to love him, to pay attention to whom we love. And God

1288. grant that as we love him that we pay attention to him who we love and become more

  1289. like him.
