  1. Do be seated. Turn if you will in John 1. It's very hot isn't it? If you feel you need to get up and wander around, get a bit of fresh, well it's not particularly fresh is it? But get a glass of water. Please don't, well you don't have to faint is what I'm saying.

  2. And we're going to meet this evening at 6 o'clock and Sinclair Ferguson is preaching. He does pulpit supply around the place. I felt we needed to have him. So, you know, I know it's a big disappointment Ruben and I aren't on, but Sinclair will be preaching tonight.

  3. I want us to look tonight, this morning, at John 1. And I'm aware that you need to exercise great discretion when you talk about your heroes. You can be guilty, can't you, of elevating a man or a woman. You can be guilty of talking too much about a particular person.

  4. But it's good to have heroes. We were made to have heroes. Godly heroes, wholesome heroes, well chosen heroes. And once in a while it's good to talk about them and to commend them.

  5. There's a man among others, one man probably who's had a profound shaping life, shaping influence on my life. He's now 98. I can see him probably kind of once a month. We talk about church life, we talk about preaching and various things.

  6. I feel something more than respect for him. There's clearly that, but there's something more than respect. Something more than admiration. There's clearly admiration.

  7. In as far as it's appropriate to stand in awe of a human being, that's what I feel about this old man.

  8. And the amazing thing is, as I've known him over the last 30 years, is what he's done consistently is he has said to me,

  9. Levy, stop thinking about yourself, which is a very, very good thing.

  10. But he said to me, stop thinking about yourself and get into God's word and think about God.

  11. Don't look at me, look at God.

  12. And when I look at John 1, I think John the Apostle stands in awe of John the Baptist.

  13. I think we can see that in the way that it's written.

  14. Still, after all these years, after all the time that's passed,

  15. in John chapter 1, 50 years later, John sits down to write his gospel.

    John 1 chapter mention

  16. And in all those ensuing years, John knew sense, as he writes about this guy, John the Baptist, he knew,

  17. he stands in awe of him.

  18. It's very likely, I think, that John, the Apostle who wrote the gospel,

  19. was one of John the Baptist's followers, disciples.

  20. It's very likely that he is one of the two mentioned in verse 35.

  21. John stands in awe of this man.

  22. He's seen his strange appearance.

  23. He's experienced his authority.

  24. He's felt the weight of God's voice in this man.

  25. And so his awe for John the Baptist, you can still sense it.

  26. And it grows out of his first-hand experience of John the Baptist.

  27. First, nothing could deter this man from his purpose.

  28. John the Baptist already told us, isn't he, last week,

  29. John the Apostle has told us what John the Baptist's role is.

  30. Look at verse 6.

  31. Back in verse 6, he says,

  32. There was a man sent from God whose name was John.

  33. He came as a witness to the light,

  34. to bear witness about the light,

  35. that all might believe through him.

  36. He wasn't the light,

  37. but he came to bear witness to the light.

  38. Do you hear that?

  39. There was a man called John who was sent from God.

  40. And his purpose was to call witness,

  41. to bear witness to someone else,

  42. to call attention to someone else,

  43. to point people's eyes and hearts to someone else.

  44. And again, you see it in verse 15.

  45. Have a look there.

  46. John bore witness about him

  47. and cried out,

  48. This was he of whom I said,

  49. he who comes after me ranks before me

  50. because he was before me.

  51. So listen up for a moment.

  52. John's purpose

  53. in writing about John's Baptist ministry

  54. can be summarized in three words.

  55. So when you start off as a preacher,

  56. they say, put your sermon into one sentence.

  57. All good sermons are put into one sentence.

  58. Great sermons are put into three words.

  59. All right?

  60. Amazing sermons are put into one word.

  61. I'm speaking ironically.

  62. All right?

  63. Three words.

  64. Okay?

  65. So children,

  66. what are the three words?

  67. Do you remember?

  68. Not me,

  69. him.

  70. What are they?

  71. Not me,

  72. him.

  73. There you go.

  74. You've got the sermon.

  75. Not me,

  76. him.

  77. Now,

  78. because the sermon is so good,

  79. you can put it into one word.

  80. Him.

  81. Somebody says to you,

  82. what was the sermon about on Sunday morning?

  83. Not me,

  84. him.

  85. Or him.

  86. That's John's life,

  87. John the Baptist.

  88. And as we look at these verses,

  89. we see all the ways in which John bears witness to Christ.

  90. Not me,

  91. him,

  92. he says.

  93. In verse 19,

  94. this is the witness,

  95. this is the testimony of John.

  96. And we see all the different ways that John accomplished that.

  97. Pointing to Christ.

  98. And it begins with this interaction with the Jewish leaders.

  99. The Jewish leaders,

  100. they're very,

  101. very important people in Jerusalem.

  102. They've sent a delegation to investigate what is going up on in Galilee.

  103. There's this great buzz.

  104. There's this great stir.

  105. There's a man eating honey and locusts,

  106. dressed in camel skin.

  107. The people are going wild for him.

  108. He lives in the wilderness.

  109. They go out to him and he baptizes them.

  110. John is the phenomenon of his day.

  111. His ministry has caused a great stir.

  112. His preaching has had an impact on people's lives.

  113. Years,

  114. after years and years and decades and centuries of silence,

  115. God is now speaking.

  116. Once again,

  117. there's a prophetic voice that was being heard in Israel.

  118. And so now they come.

  119. You can imagine the film crews are there, aren't they?

  120. The TV are there.

  121. The radio are there.

  122. It's disturbing the religious authorities.

  123. They're troubled.

  124. They're bothered by this outlier and John's independence.

  125. Here is this rogue Levite preacher

  126. with no real theological education,

  127. attracting all this attention,

  128. and people follow him.

  129. And the religious establishment,

  130. it's a big problem to them.

  131. Because even though he was clearly unorthodox in his manner,

  132. there's something unmistakable of God about him.

  133. He's unorthodox in his manner and in his preaching,

  134. and yet there's something unmistakably of God about him.

  135. There's a power and authority in his words.

  136. And so here they come.

  137. They come thinking,

  138. who does he think he is?

  139. Presenting himself as the Messiah.

  140. So they come from Jerusalem.

  141. And despite the success of John the Baptist's ministry,

  142. he is totally unaffected by his success.

  143. He knows that compared to the effects of the ministry

  144. of the one who is to come,

  145. the effects of his ministry are like nothing.

  146. He knows who the one is to come,

  147. and he knows what the one who is coming will accomplish.

  148. And so the delegation arrived,

  149. the TV crews, they're all there,

  150. and look at the interaction.

  151. It's brilliant.

  152. Verse 20,

  153. the first reporter says,

  154. who are you?

  155. Everyone's talking about you.

  156. They puff him up a little bit.

  157. Verse 20,

  158. he confessed and did not deny,

  159. but confessed,

  160. here it is,

  161. I am not the Christ.

  162. Verse 21,

  163. they asked him,

  164. what then,

  165. are you Elijah?

  166. Another reporter has a go,

  167. and says,

  168. well,

  169. are you Elijah?

  170. You know the prophet from long ago.

  171. Is it you?

  172. He said,

  173. I'm not.

  174. Third reporter,

  175. getting slightly nervous,

  176. says,

  177. well,

  178. are you the prophet?

  179. And he answered,

  180. no.

  181. So they said,

  182. well,

  183. who are you?

  184. We need to give an answer to those who sent us.

  185. What do you say about yourself?

  186. The director in the year piece is saying,

  187. keep going,

  188. ask for more.

  189. And he says,

  190. I am the voice of one crying out in the wilderness,

  191. make straight the way of the Lord,

  192. as the prophet Isaiah said.

  193. And we'll cut back to the studio on that point.

  194. Jesus is the great I am,

  195. isn't it?

  196. It's been said that John is the great I am not.

  197. I am not.

  198. No.

  199. Who are you?

  200. John says,

  201. listen to me,

  202. I'm a voice.

  203. I'm a voice of one crying in the wilderness.

  204. I'm just an announcer.

  205. I'm just the warm-up guy.

  206. And that's all I am.

  207. So don't inquire about me.

  208. There's nothing here for you to discover.

  209. There's nothing more you're going to find out about me.

  210. It's not important.

  211. Just listen.

  212. Just listen to what I'm saying.

  213. I'm just a voice.

  214. Listen to what John says in verse 25.

  215. He says there,

  216. doesn't he?

  217. They asked him,

  218. then why are you baptizing

  219. if you are neither the Christ,

  220. nor Elijah,

  221. nor the prophet?

  222. And John answered them,

  223. I baptize with water.

  224. But among you stands one

  225. you do not know.

  226. You don't even know him.

  227. even he who comes after me,

  228. the strap of whose sandal

  229. I am not worthy to untie.

  230. These things took place in Bethany

  231. across the Jordan

  232. where John was baptizing.

  233. The next day,

  234. he saw Jesus coming towards him

  235. and he says,

  236. behold,

  237. stop what you're doing.

  238. Shut up and look.

  239. The Lamb of God

  240. who takes away the sin of the world.

  241. This is he of whom I said after me,

  242. comes a man who ranks before me

  243. because he was before me.

  244. I myself did not know him,

  245. but for this purpose

  246. I came baptizing with water

  247. that he might be revealed to Israel.

  248. And John bore witness.

  249. I saw the Spirit

  250. descend from heaven like a dove

  251. and it remained on him.

  252. I myself did not know him,

  253. but he who sent me to baptize with water

  254. said to me,

  255. he on whom you see the Spirit

  256. descend and remain,

  257. this is he who baptizes

  258. with the Holy Spirit.

  259. And I've seen

  260. and I've borne witness

  261. that this is the Son of God.

  262. Look at all the ways

  263. that John bears witness

  264. and points to Jesus.

  265. His preaching

  266. prepares the way

  267. for Christ's preaching.

  268. His baptism

  269. prepares the way

  270. for a far greater baptism

  271. that Christ will bring.

  272. His theological description

  273. exalts and magnifies Christ.

  274. His direct references

  275. called people's attention

  276. to what he was doing.

  277. Look there, he says.

  278. There he is.

  279. Look at him.

  280. He's the one.

  281. And then very deliberately

  282. he takes his own disciples,

  283. his own followers

  284. and he says to them,

  285. this is remarkable,

  286. he says,

  287. you don't want to follow me.

  288. Don't waste your time

  289. following me.

  290. Follow him.

  291. It's an amazing,

  292. flabbergasting pattern

  293. for Christian leaders, isn't it?

  294. Don't follow me.

  295. Don't lean on me.

  296. Don't waste your time

  297. following me.

  298. Follow him.

  299. And then,

  300. John,

  301. very deliberately,

  302. doesn't he,

  303. encourages the transfer

  304. of their allegiance

  305. to Jesus.

  306. And so in all those ways,

  307. John bore witness to Christ.

  308. Not me,

  309. him.

  310. Three words.

  311. Not me,

  312. him.

  313. That's my life's mission.

  314. And so these verses

  315. in chapter one,

  316. they sell out

  317. several different ways,

  318. don't they?

  319. That John spells out

  320. the supremacy

  321. of the Lord Jesus.

  322. These verses

  323. really emphasize

  324. how John went

  325. about doing it.

  326. How faithfully

  327. John was.

  328. But the real question

  329. that we need to get to

  330. this morning

  331. is the why.

  332. Why did John do this?

  333. Why was John

  334. willing to call

  335. all attention

  336. to the Lord Jesus?

  337. What is it about

  338. the Christ

  339. that makes it

  340. so important to John

  341. that he is

  342. resolutely

  343. refusing to be

  344. deterred from his mission?

  345. Why is he

  346. pointing to Christ?

  347. There's three things.

  348. Number one,

  349. I think this.

  350. John the Baptist

  351. knew the identity

  352. of Jesus.

  353. John the Baptist

  354. knew the identity

  355. of Jesus.

  356. He knew who Jesus was.

  357. John comprehended.

  358. He had grasped

  359. something of the

  360. majestic

  361. divine identity

  362. of Jesus.

  363. Look at verse 30.

  364. It's a remarkable verse.

  365. He says,

  366. after me

  367. comes a man

  368. who ranks before me

  369. because he was

  370. before me.

  371. You got that?

  372. After me,

  373. comes a man

  374. who ranks before me.

  375. He's more important

  376. than I am

  377. because he was

  378. before me.

  379. Now,

  380. I don't know how familiar

  381. you are with your Bible,

  382. but do you remember

  383. they were related

  384. to one another?

  385. John the Baptist

  386. and the Lord Jesus.

  387. John's mother,

  388. Elizabeth,

  389. is Jesus' mother,

  390. Mary's cousin.

  391. I think I've got that right.

  392. Elizabeth and Mary

  393. were cousins,

  394. the two mothers.

  395. And so,

  396. John and Jesus

  397. are related.

  398. And in human terms

  399. of chronology,

  400. the human chronology

  401. when you read

  402. the other Gospels

  403. is that John

  404. is older than Jesus.

  405. By about six months

  406. we probably think.

  407. And yet,

  408. he says,

  409. can you see it?

  410. Verse 30,

  411. he was before me.

  412. So that,

  413. so what in the world

  414. is John saying?

  415. He's saying to Jesus,

  416. I know who you are.

  417. I know who you are.

  418. What has John understood?

  419. John has understood

  420. chapter 1,

  421. verse 1,

  422. in the beginning

  423. was the Word

  424. and the Word

  425. was with God

  426. and the Word

  427. was God.

  428. And he was

  429. in the beginning

  430. with God.

  431. And he understood

  432. that that Word

  433. had become flesh

  434. and there,

  435. his cousin,

  436. Jesus is the

  437. incarnate Word.

  438. He points to

  439. an ordinary looking

  440. Jewish carpenter

  441. in his late 20s

  442. and he says,

  443. I'm not unworthy

  444. to untie the straps

  445. of that guy's sandals.

  446. And they say to him,

  447. isn't he your cousin?

  448. And he said,

  449. yeah.

  450. And he is the Word.

  451. And he is God.

  452. That's why he says

  453. in verse 34,

  454. can you see there?

  455. And I have seen

  456. and borne witness

  457. that this is

  458. the Son of God.

  459. This is the Word made flesh,

  460. very God,

  461. a very God,

  462. one with the Father,

  463. identical in essence

  464. with the Father

  465. in whom the fullness

  466. of God now dwells

  467. in bodily form.

  468. And so the first reason

  469. why John points to Jesus

  470. is because John the Baptist

  471. understands who he is,

  472. that he is the Word

  473. made flesh

  474. and that he is

  475. from the beginning.

  476. Here's the second reason

  477. why John points to Jesus.

  478. Because Jesus is the one

  479. in whom there is

  480. complete forgiveness of sin.

  481. Jesus is the one

  482. in whom there is

  483. complete forgiveness

  484. of sin.

  485. Look very slowly

  486. and very carefully

  487. at verse 29.

  488. The next day,

  489. John saw Jesus

  490. coming towards him

  491. and said,

  492. Behold,

  493. the Lamb of God

  494. who takes away

  495. the sin of the world.

  496. And when John uses

  497. that language,

  498. that image,

  499. that metaphor,

  500. the Lamb of God,

  501. there are images,

  502. background images,

  503. there are flashbacks

  504. to the Old Testament.

  505. And as some people

  506. would no doubt

  507. have thought back

  508. to Genesis 22

  509. and the story of Abraham

  510. about the sacrifice

  511. of his son

  512. on the mountain

  513. and God stops him

  514. and says,

  515. Look behind you

  516. and God provides

  517. a lamb.

  518. Some of them

  519. would have been

  520. thinking of that.

  521. Many of them

  522. would have been

  523. thinking of Isaiah 53

  524. where the prophet says

  525. there's going to be

  526. a lamb who's going

  527. to bear the sins

  528. of many

  529. who will suffer

  530. on our behalf.

  531. But I think

  532. most of the people

  533. who heard that

  534. would have been

  535. thinking,

  536. because they celebrated

  537. it every year,

  538. they would have been

  539. thinking of the Passover

  540. lamb.

  541. They would have been

  542. thinking about that

  543. sacrifice for covering,

  544. a sacrifice for atoning,

  545. a sacrifice for forgiveness.

  546. And with that meaning

  547. in their minds

  548. that God had rescued

  549. them through the blood

  550. of a lamb,

  551. John now points

  552. to Jesus

  553. and he says,

  554. Behold the Lamb of God

  555. who takes away

  556. the sin of the world.

  557. I'm not sure

  558. how fully aware

  559. John the Baptist

  560. was of the implications

  561. of what he was saying.

  562. I think John the Baptist

  563. speaks here

  564. more than he realises.

  565. But 50 years later

  566. when the apostle John

  567. is writing this gospel,

  568. reflecting on these words

  569. of John the Baptist

  570. right back at the beginning,

  571. he's seen

  572. the sinless life,

  573. he's seen the sacrificial

  574. death of Christ,

  575. he's experienced

  576. in his own soul

  577. the purifying effects

  578. of the death of Jesus.

  579. And as he sits

  580. and writes and records,

  581. you can just imagine

  582. John the apostle,

  583. can't you,

  584. with his pen in his hand

  585. recounting that moment

  586. when John the Baptist

  587. said those words?

  588. Recounting the gospel

  589. in all its fullness

  590. of the sinless life

  591. and the substitutionary

  592. death of Jesus.

  593. John the Baptist

  594. points to Jesus

  595. because in him

  596. this morning,

  597. right now,

  598. there is complete

  599. forgiveness of sin.

  600. It's so simple,

  601. isn't it,

  602. that Jesus came

  603. to take away

  604. our sin

  605. and our rebellion

  606. and your guilt.

  607. Look again

  608. at verse 29,

  609. just notice

  610. that word

  611. away.

  612. He's taking it away.

  613. the Lamb of God,

  614. behold,

  615. look at him,

  616. think on him,

  617. observe him,

  618. the Lamb of God

  619. who takes away

  620. the sin of the world.

  621. Listen to these words

  622. from Bruce Mill,

  623. he's a great preacher

  624. in Canada,

  625. a Scottish guy,

  626. listen closely to this

  627. because I suspect

  628. that maybe,

  629. you may be sitting here

  630. this morning

  631. and you need to hear

  632. these words.

  633. It's what Bruce Mill

  634. says,

  635. he says,

  636. few aspects

  637. of the gospel

  638. need greater

  639. or more frequent

  640. affirmation

  641. than this one.

  642. How many people

  643. struggle for survival

  644. beneath crushing

  645. burdens of guilt

  646. but Christ,

  647. the Lamb of God,

  648. really has

  649. borne it all

  650. for us.

  651. He says to us today,

  652. son,

  653. daughter,

  654. your sins

  655. are forgiven,

  656. your sins,

  657. your sinful

  658. deeds,

  659. I will remember

  660. no more.

  661. Behold the Lamb

  662. of God.

  663. Not me,

  664. him.

  665. John points us

  666. to Jesus

  667. because in him

  668. and only in him

  669. is found

  670. complete forgiveness

  671. for our sins.

  672. One more reason

  673. John points us

  674. to Jesus

  675. is because

  676. in Jesus

  677. there's new life.

  678. in Jesus

  679. you can be

  680. born again

  681. into new life.

  682. John points us

  683. to Jesus

  684. because he

  685. is life.

  686. Look at verse

  687. 31.

  688. I myself

  689. did not

  690. know him

  691. but for this

  692. purpose

  693. I came

  694. baptizing

  695. with water

  696. that he

  697. might be

  698. revealed to

  699. Israel.

  700. John bore

  701. witness,

  702. I saw the spirit

  703. descend from heaven

  704. like a dove

  705. and it remained

  706. on him.

  707. I myself

  708. did not

  709. know him

  710. but he

  711. who sent

  712. me to

  713. baptize

  714. with water

  715. said to me

  716. he on whom

  717. you see

  718. the spirit

  719. descend

  720. and remain

  721. that is

  722. he who

  723. baptizes

  724. with

  725. the Holy

  726. Spirit.

  727. Why is

  728. John

  729. using

  730. baptism

  731. language?

  732. And it is

  733. because baptism

  734. is pointing

  735. you to something.

  736. It is an

  737. initiatory

  738. experience.

  739. Baptism

  740. speaks to

  741. you of

  742. being brought

  743. into something

  744. new.

  745. It points

  746. us to new

  747. life.

  748. That new

  749. life can

  750. only be

  751. found in

  752. the Lord

  753. Jesus Christ.

  754. That is

  755. what it

  756. says to

  757. Lily.

  758. It says

  759. to Lily

  760. her baptism

  761. speaks to

  762. her and

  763. it speaks

  764. to you

  765. by saying

  766. new

  767. life,

  768. the washing

  769. of your

  770. sin can

  771. only be

  772. found in

  773. Christ and

  774. new life

  775. in the

  776. Holy Spirit

  777. can only

  778. be found

  779. in Christ.

  780. It is one

  781. thing isn't

  782. it to have

  783. your sins

  784. forgiven.

  785. But if

  786. all it is

  787. that your

  788. sins are

  789. forgiven,

  790. all that

  791. does is

  792. bring you

  793. up to

  794. zero.

  795. You've

  796. been in

  797. the hole

  798. and now

  799. you've

  800. been brought

  801. out of

  802. the hole.

  803. You're

  804. just at

  805. zero.

  806. But Jesus

  807. came not

  808. just to

  809. forgive your

  810. sins.

  811. Listen to

  812. this children

  813. and young

  814. people.

  815. Jesus came

  816. not just

  817. to forgive

  818. your sins,

  819. he came

  820. to give

  821. you new

  822. life.

  823. New

  824. life in

  825. God's

  826. Spirit.

  827. And so

  828. Jesus came

  829. not just

  830. to forgive

  831. but to

  832. give new

  833. life and

  834. he baptises

  835. with the

  836. Holy Spirit.

  837. The language

  838. of baptising

  839. with the

  840. Holy Spirit

  841. it is the

  842. language of

  843. new

  844. spiritual

  845. life.

  846. So you

  847. think of

  848. Adam in

  849. the Garden

  850. of Eden

  851. and God

  852. breathed

  853. into him

  854. his Spirit

  855. and gave

  856. him life.

  857. C.S. Lewis

  858. he picks it

  859. up doesn't

  860. he with

  861. Aslan.

  862. Aslan

  863. breathes on

  864. the stony

  865. figures.

  866. Do you

  867. remember?

  868. And they

  869. come to

  870. life.

  871. And so

  872. Christ

  873. breathes

  874. the Holy

  875. Spirit.

  876. He gives

  877. the Holy

  878. Spirit.

  879. He causes

  880. us to be

  881. born again

  882. into new

  883. spiritual

  884. life.

  885. Just look at

  886. chapter 3

  887. in verse 3

  888. flick over

  889. as we

  890. finish.

  891. Jesus

  892. answered

  893. Nicodemus

  894. this kind

  895. of religious

  896. man

  897. religious

  898. leader

  899. truly truly

  900. I say

  901. to you

  902. unless one

  903. is born

  904. again

  905. he cannot

  906. see the

  907. kingdom

  908. of God.

  909. Nicodemus

  910. said to

  911. him

  912. what do

  913. you

  914. want

  915. about

  916. how can

  917. a man

  918. be born

  919. when he's

  920. old

  921. can he

  922. enter a

  923. second time

  924. into his

  925. mother's

  926. temple

  927. and be

  928. born?

  929. Jesus

  930. answered

  931. truly truly

  932. I say

  933. to you

  934. unless one

  935. is born

  936. of water

  937. that's the

  938. natural

  939. birth

  940. and the

  941. spirit

  942. he cannot

  943. enter the

  944. kingdom

  945. of God

  946. that which

  947. is born

  948. of the

  949. flesh

  950. is flesh

  951. and that

  952. which is

  953. born

  954. of the

  955. spirit

  956. is spirit

  957. God's

  958. desire

  959. from the

  960. beginning

  961. for us

  962. to have

  963. life

  964. which we

  965. have

  966. forfeited

  967. through our

  968. rebellion

  969. of saying

  970. God I do

  971. not want

  972. you to be

  973. in control

  974. I am

  975. in control

  976. our rebellion

  977. against Christ

  978. and now

  979. God offers

  980. to us

  981. in the

  982. Lord Jesus

  983. new life

  984. Jesus

  985. baptises

  986. with the

  987. spirit

  988. he gives

  989. life to

  990. us by

  991. his spirit

  992. there is

  993. life in

  994. him

  995. and he

  996. gives

  997. freely

  998. to all

  999. who will

  1000. turn to

  1001. him

  1002. and that's

  1003. why John

  1004. points to him

  1005. let me finish

  1006. it's really

  1007. hot isn't

  1008. it

  1009. let me

  1010. call your

  1011. attention

  1012. one last

  1013. time

  1014. to verses

  1015. 34 and

  1016. 35

  1017. chapter 1

  1018. verse 34

  1019. and 35

  1020. just look

  1021. at it

  1022. John says

  1023. I've seen

  1024. and have

  1025. borne witness

  1026. that this

  1027. is the

  1028. son of

  1029. God

  1030. the next

  1031. day

  1032. again

  1033. John was

  1034. standing with

  1035. two of his

  1036. disciples

  1037. and he

  1038. looked

  1039. at Jesus

  1040. as he

  1041. walked by

  1042. and said

  1043. behold

  1044. the

  1045. lamb

  1046. of God

  1047. the

  1048. two

  1049. disciples

  1050. heard him

  1051. say this

  1052. and they

  1053. followed

  1054. Jesus

  1055. just

  1056. imagine

  1057. the scene

  1058. for a

  1059. moment

  1060. he's

  1061. already

  1062. announced

  1063. very

  1064. broadly

  1065. very

  1066. publicly

  1067. behold

  1068. the

  1069. lamb

  1070. of

  1071. God

  1072. and now

  1073. it appears

  1074. that John

  1075. is standing

  1076. with two

  1077. of his

  1078. disciples

  1079. one of

  1080. them is

  1081. likely to

  1082. be the

  1083. guy who

  1084. has

  1085. actually

  1086. written

  1087. this

  1088. gospel

  1089. and

  1090. Jesus

  1091. walks

  1092. by

  1093. John

  1094. the

  1095. Baptist

  1096. just

  1097. turns to

  1098. them

  1099. his own

  1100. followers

  1101. and says

  1102. there he

  1103. is

  1104. behold

  1105. the

  1106. lamb

  1107. of

  1108. God

  1109. and look

  1110. what

  1111. happens

  1112. it's

  1113. an

  1114. amazing

  1115. thing

  1116. so

  1117. undramatic

  1118. verse 37

  1119. the two

  1120. disciples

  1121. heard him

  1122. say this

  1123. they

  1124. followed

  1125. Jesus

  1126. and clearly

  1127. John

  1128. as we're

  1129. going to

  1130. see again

  1131. and again

  1132. is writing

  1133. on two

  1134. levels

  1135. yes

  1136. the

  1137. disciples

  1138. physically

  1139. started

  1140. walking

  1141. after Jesus

  1142. but more

  1143. significantly

  1144. they're

  1145. taking

  1146. their first

  1147. steps

  1148. aren't

  1149. there

  1150. into

  1151. a

  1152. new

  1153. life

  1154. and that's

  1155. John's

  1156. purpose

  1157. that's

  1158. why

  1159. John

  1160. wrote

  1161. his

  1162. gospel

  1163. that's

  1164. why

  1165. we're

  1166. preaching

  1167. it

  1168. that

  1169. you

  1170. might

  1171. know

  1172. that

  1173. new

  1174. life

  1175. just

  1176. come

  1177. with me

  1178. sorry

  1179. I told

  1180. you it

  1181. was the

  1182. last

  1183. reference

  1184. but

  1185. that's

  1186. not

  1187. true

  1188. chapter

  1189. 3

  1190. verse

  1191. 25

  1192. as a

  1193. discussion

  1194. arose

  1195. between

  1196. some

  1197. of

  1198. John's

  1199. disciples

  1200. and

  1201. Jews

  1202. over

  1203. purification

  1204. and they

  1205. came to

  1206. John and

  1207. said to him

  1208. Rabbi

  1209. John the

  1210. Baptist

  1211. he was

  1212. with you

  1213. across the

  1214. Jordan

  1215. to whom

  1216. you bore

  1217. witness

  1218. look

  1219. he's

  1220. baptizing

  1221. people

  1222. and all

  1223. are going

  1224. after him

  1225. you're

  1226. losing

  1227. followers

  1228. John

  1229. answered

  1230. a person

  1231. cannot

  1232. receive

  1233. even

  1234. one

  1235. thing

  1236. unless

  1237. it's

  1238. given

  1239. to him

  1240. from

  1241. heaven

  1242. you

  1243. yourselves

  1244. bear me

  1245. witness

  1246. that I

  1247. said I'm

  1248. not the

  1249. Christ

  1250. but I've

  1251. been sent

  1252. before him

  1253. the one

  1254. who has

  1255. the bride

  1256. is the

  1257. bridegroom

  1258. the friend

  1259. of the

  1260. bridegroom

  1261. well he

  1262. stands

  1263. and he

  1264. hears

  1265. him

  1266. and he

  1267. rejoices

  1268. greatly

  1269. at the

  1270. bridegroom's

  1271. voice

  1272. therefore

  1273. this joy

  1274. of mine

  1275. is now

  1276. complete

  1277. why

  1278. he

  1279. must

  1280. increase

  1281. but I

  1282. must

  1283. decrease

  1284. not

  1285. me

  1286. him

  1287. and it

  1288. might be

  1289. really

  1290. tempting

  1291. and maybe

  1292. I've

  1293. preached

  1294. this

  1295. wrongly

  1296. this

  1297. morning

  1298. you

  1299. might

  1300. think

  1301. that my

  1302. message

  1303. is

  1304. be like

  1305. John

  1306. the

  1307. Baptist

  1308. and point

  1309. others

  1310. to Jesus

  1311. and that's

  1312. a very

  1313. good

  1314. message

  1315. but it

  1316. isn't

  1317. the

  1318. message

  1319. of

  1320. John

  1321. 1

  1322. it

  1323. isn't

  1324. the

  1325. message

  1326. of

  1327. John

  1328. 1

  1329. because

  1330. we

  1331. are

  1332. not

  1333. being

  1334. called

  1335. to

  1336. follow

  1337. John's

  1338. example

  1339. and point

  1340. others

  1341. to

  1342. Christ

  1343. that we

  1344. should

  1345. do

  1346. that

  1347. the

  1348. message

  1349. in

  1350. John

  1351. 1

  1352. the

  1353. main

  1354. thing

  1355. here

  1356. is

  1357. follow

  1358. John's

  1359. eyes

  1360. and

  1361. follow

  1362. John's

  1363. finger

  1364. and

  1365. follow

  1366. John's

  1367. voice

  1368. the

  1369. reason

  1370. why God

  1371. had
