  1. Do sit and open your Bibles to John chapter 1.

    John 1 chapter mention

  2. John chapter 1.

    John 1 chapter mention

  3. If you've got a church Bible, that's page 886.

  4. If you've got to grab a church Bible there, just by the door.

  5. As you're turning there, let me again invite you to this evening's service.

  6. Tonight we've got the joy and the privilege of installing Reuben Hunter as an elder

  7. and the associate minister of this congregation.

  8. That is a wonderful thing.

  9. It's a gift from the Lord Jesus Christ.

  10. We're really grateful for Reuben and Louisa and the family.

  11. So can I ask you to come, encourage them.

  12. Bring some cake if you've got it.

  13. Bring your leftover desserts.

  14. We'll eat and celebrate together.

  15. David Field is going to be the preacher.

  16. So we're looking forward to that.

  17. I was at my nephew's wedding on Friday in Edinburgh.

  18. It's a really lovely occasion.

  19. They're in their mid-twenties.

  20. After they'd got married, my sister-in-law turned to me and said,

  21. they've got no idea what they've let themselves in for, have they?

  22. My brother looked slightly alarmed.

  23. But that's the case, isn't it, when young people get married.

  24. They've got no idea what they let themselves in for.

  25. I think it can often be like that a little bit in the Christian life.

  26. It's certainly like that in John 1.

  27. At the end of John 1 with these first disciples.

  28. Last week, we saw John the Baptist.

  29. Do you remember?

  30. He drew the attention of everyone that would listen to him to the Lord Jesus Christ.

  31. He was so effective at pointing to the Lord Jesus that two of his disciples left him and started following Jesus.

  32. And John the Baptist was effective in his ministry of preparing the way, clearing the way for Jesus.

  33. John the Baptist was effective in heightening people's curiosity about Jesus.

  34. And there must have been, mustn't there, in these disciples, great anticipation.

  35. Even before Jesus arrived on the scene.

  36. And so, they find themselves taking these initial steps in following him.

  37. They're excited to know, where are you staying?

  38. But they don't really know what they're letting themselves in for.

  39. They don't know what is going to be ahead of them.

  40. And in these verses, at the end of John 1,

  41. Jesus shows them and us what we can expect in following him.

  42. You see, John's Gospel is not just history.

  43. Sometimes people describe the Gospels as a biography of Jesus.

  44. That's hopelessly inadequate.

  45. What is written down before you is history,

  46. but it's got a much greater purpose than a history textbook.

  47. Near the end of this book of John's Gospel,

  48. John very carefully and very explicitly says,

  49. Do you know what?

  50. Many things could have been written about Jesus.

  51. But these things I wrote so that you might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God.

  52. And that by believing you might have life, life in its fullness through his name.

  53. And so, in every part of John, there's a clear and urgent purpose to what's written.

  54. And John is saying to us, the readers of this Gospel,

  55. God is saying to us, through John this morning,

  56. make sure you understand why I'm writing.

  57. More important even than John's focus,

  58. God has designed this revelation,

  59. this record,

  60. to accomplish something in your heart.

  61. So while what you've got on your laps is real history,

  62. an accurate history,

  63. it is calling forth belief.

  64. It is going to change your life.

  65. Look back with me at verse 9.

  66. The true light,

  67. which gives light to everyone,

  68. was coming into the world.

  69. He was in the world

  70. and the world was made through him,

  71. yet the world did not know him.

  72. The true light,

  73. which enlightens everyone,

  74. was coming into the world.

  75. He was in the world

  76. and the world was made through him,

  77. and yet the world did not know him.

  78. He came to his own,

  79. his own people.

  80. and yet his own people didn't recognize him.

  81. But to all who did receive him, what happened?

  82. To all who believed in his name, he gives the right,

  83. he gives the privilege to be children of God.

  84. And so the question for this morning is for these disciples,

  85. is what might they expect from Jesus as they turn to follow him?

  86. What might they expect from Jesus as they turn to follow him?

  87. And it's very clearly the purpose of John's gospel that he's writing for.

  88. What should we expect from Jesus?

  89. So first of all, my first point, only two points this morning,

  90. is we should expect a claim on our lives.

  91. As you follow Jesus, you should expect a claim on your life.

  92. The moment we turn to Jesus and we begin to follow him,

  93. we should expect a claim on our lives.

  94. Jesus is not just going to let you be.

  95. Here are these disciples.

  96. They're really excited, aren't they?

  97. They sense they're into something here.

  98. Something exciting.

  99. They want to tell others.

  100. They want to bring others.

  101. But can you please notice, in every case, in every case,

  102. without fail,

  103. as soon as a new person gets introduced to Jesus,

  104. as soon as a new person comes to Jesus in John's gospel,

  105. as soon as they meet Christ,

  106. they are confronted, each one of them in a unique way.

  107. Each one of them is confronted with someone who is making a claim on their lives.

  108. That is the very first thing to expect when following Jesus.

  109. He makes a claim on your life this morning.

  110. Things will never remain the same.

  111. Look at verse 40 with me.

  112. Verse 40, it says,

  113. One of the two who heard John speak and followed Jesus

  114. was Andrew, Simon Peter's brother.

  115. He first found his own brother, Simon,

  116. and said to him,

  117. We have found the Messiah,

  118. which means Christ, God's anointed king.

  119. He brought him to Jesus.

  120. Jesus looked at him and said,

  121. You are Simon, the son of John.

  122. You shall be called Cephas,

  123. which means Peter.

  124. Jesus immediately says,

  125. I'm going to rename you.

  126. You are Simon,

  127. but I'm going to call you Cephas.

  128. From now on, you will be called Cephas.

  129. From now on, you will be known by something

  130. other than what you have been known by.

  131. And these words,

  132. when Jesus speaks these words to Peter,

  133. it's not as if he's making some predictive statement.

  134. Can you see, it's a declaration.

  135. It's a declaration of what Jesus will make this man.

  136. You are, you now are Peter.

  137. Do you know what Peter means?

  138. You know what it means, don't you?

  139. It means rock.

  140. Jesus is saying,

  141. Peter, I am going to build my church on you.

  142. I am going to claim your life.

  143. I am going to do something

  144. that you could never have imagined

  145. with your life.

  146. Look at verse 43.

  147. The next day, Jesus decided to go to Galilee.

  148. He found Philip and said to him,

  149. follow me.

  150. Just like that.

  151. No hesitation.

  152. No apologies.

  153. It doesn't matter what you're doing.

  154. You follow me.

  155. You follow me.

  156. I lay claim on your life.

  157. It's astonishing authority, isn't it, this man?

  158. And then there's this remarkable,

  159. intriguing interaction with Nathanael.

  160. Look at verse 45.

  161. Philip found Nathanael and said to him,

  162. we have found him of whom Moses in the law

  163. and also the prophets wrote,

  164. Jesus of Nazareth, the son of David.

  165. Nathanael said to him,

  166. can anything good come out of Nazareth?

  167. The people in the region of Galilee,

  168. in the north of Israel,

  169. the people of Galilee were despised

  170. by everyone else.

  171. And so they would pick on Nazareth,

  172. isn't it?

  173. It's like Americans always say,

  174. thank goodness for Mississippi,

  175. because Mississippi is always regarded

  176. as the worst state, isn't it?

  177. I wanted to give an English illustration,

  178. but I thought you're bound to offend someone.

  179. I'm not bothered by offending Americans.

  180. But Galilee, isn't it?

  181. Galilee was looked down on,

  182. so they would look down on Nazareth.

  183. They're despised.

  184. In order to maintain some kind of self-esteem,

  185. you look down on others.

  186. And so here is Nathanael mocking Nazareth.

  187. Can anything good come out of Nazareth?

  188. Well, Philip says to Nathanael,

  189. I think this might be the exception,

  190. come and see.

  191. And Jesus saw Nathanael coming towards him.

  192. Look what he says.

  193. He says,

  194. Behold an Israelite,

  195. in whom there is no deceit,

  196. there is no guile.

  197. Then he says to him,

  198. before you came,

  199. before Philip called you,

  200. verse 48,

  201. when you were under the fig tree,

  202. I saw you.

  203. Nathanael can't believe it.

  204. Despite Nathanael's incredulity,

  205. despite his doubts about whether anything good can come from Nazareth,

  206. while he's coming to Jesus,

  207. Jesus x-rays him.

  208. Jesus knows him.

  209. Jesus scans him.

  210. Jesus describes him.

  211. And he lets him know,

  212. Jesus says,

  213. I know you.

  214. I've seen you.

  215. You thought, Nathanael,

  216. you were just sitting under the fig tree,

  217. resting in the shade,

  218. in the heat of the day,

  219. but I know you.

  220. I saw you.

  221. And I want you to know that.

  222. I want you to know that.

  223. Do you see what's happening in these little exchanges

  224. between Jesus and these disciples?

  225. Do you see,

  226. as the readers of this gospel,

  227. what you should expect from Jesus?

  228. It is clear that Jesus takes the reins

  229. in John's gospel.

  230. I see you.

  231. I know you.

  232. This is who you are.

  233. This is what you're going to do.

  234. This is what you will be.

  235. I make claim on your life.

  236. Things will never be the same once you've met me.

  237. And thankfully, wonderfully, gloriously,

  238. the Lord Jesus is the same today.

  239. That the moment we turn to Christ,

  240. he openly lays claim on our lives.

  241. He ever so graciously says to you,

  242. things are never going to be the same again.

  243. I see you.

  244. I know you.

  245. I know your circumstances.

  246. I know everything about you.

  247. I know when you get up.

  248. I know when you lie down.

  249. I know your words before you speak them.

  250. I know the workings of your mind.

  251. I know the desires of your heart.

  252. I know every thought about you.

  253. I know you full well.

  254. And I have a plan for you.

  255. I have an intention for you.

  256. I have an intention for you and a purpose for you.

  257. I'm not just going to rescue you.

  258. I know you full well.

  259. I'm not just going to rescue you from drowning

  260. and leave you shivering on the shore.

  261. I will lay claim to your life

  262. because I am the Christ,

  263. God's anointed king.

  264. And I want to say to you,

  265. for those of us who are Christians this morning,

  266. trusting in the Lord Jesus Christ as the people of God,

  267. there is such great comfort in this, isn't there?

  268. There is such security and joy that Christ sees me.

  269. He knows me.

  270. He knows me fully.

  271. There is nothing of me to know that he does not know.

  272. And he has laid claim to my life

  273. and my life will not be wasted.

  274. And my life will not be useless wandering around.

  275. And we should remember, shouldn't we,

  276. and remind ourselves and remind one another

  277. that he has every right to lay claim on my life.

  278. It's my only hope.

  279. I need him to do a work in my life.

  280. The fact that he knows me is impressive enough,

  281. but his authority, his right to lay claim on my life

  282. derives from a far greater reality than just his knowledge.

  283. Yes, he says, I know you, I see you,

  284. but over that and above that,

  285. we hear him saying in John 1,

  286. I made you.

  287. Do you remember, in the beginning was the Word,

  288. and the Word was with God,

  289. and the Word was God.

  290. He was in the beginning with God.

  291. All things were made through him,

  292. and without him was not anything made that was made.

  293. Which is John's way of saying to you and I this morning,

  294. you were made by Christ.

  295. You were made to be like Christ.

  296. You were made for Christ.

  297. That is the reason you exist.

  298. That is the reason you were put on this planet.

  299. That is the reason why you've got breath in your body.

  300. So what should you expect from the Lord Jesus?

  301. Well, first of all, expect him to lovingly,

  302. graciously,

  303. beneficently,

  304. which means, for your good, I discovered this week,

  305. he lays claim on your life.

  306. He lays claim on your life that will result in the beginning

  307. of a wonderful transformation.

  308. But that is not all.

  309. That's not all to expect from Jesus.

  310. There's something more that you can expect from Jesus.

  311. And I've tried to figure this out

  312. and put it into kind of a catchy phrase,

  313. but I haven't been able to do it.

  314. So forgive my lack of brevity in the second point, okay?

  315. Secondly, what can you expect from the Lord Jesus?

  316. He lays claim to your life,

  317. but secondly,

  318. you can expect to be ushered into something

  319. far bigger and far more glorious

  320. than your otherwise small life.

  321. What can you expect of Jesus?

  322. You can expect to be ushered into something

  323. far bigger and far more glorious

  324. than your otherwise small life.

  325. And I nearly said insignificant life,

  326. but I wasn't brave enough to say it.

  327. But that is true, isn't it?

  328. Because apart from the Lord Jesus,

  329. you might think that what you're doing

  330. is grand and great,

  331. but it is not.

  332. And the world's estimation of your accomplishments

  333. is not the right test.

  334. But with Christ,

  335. as you follow the Lord Jesus Christ,

  336. you will be brought into something,

  337. you'll be brought into something bigger,

  338. you'll be brought into something more permanent,

  339. you'll be brought into something

  340. a million times more real

  341. than the things of this world.

  342. Look at this verse at the end of the chapter.

  343. Look at verse 50.

  344. Jesus answered Nathalia and said,

  345. because I said to you,

  346. I saw you under the fig tree,

  347. do you believe?

  348. You will see greater things than these.

  349. You will see greater things than this.

  350. And then Jesus says,

  351. truly, truly,

  352. it's the first time

  353. he uses this really important phrase

  354. in the gospel.

  355. It's Jesus saying,

  356. you can trust me on this one.

  357. You can trust me on this one.

  358. Truly, truly,

  359. I say to you,

  360. you will see heaven opened

  361. and the angels of God

  362. ascending and descending

  363. on the Son of Man,

  364. which is Jesus' way

  365. of referring to himself.

  366. What's Jesus saying there?

  367. He is saying to Nathanael,

  368. as you come to me

  369. and as you follow me,

  370. I'm going to open your eyes

  371. and you will see

  372. that there are greater things

  373. that are happening

  374. things more real

  375. than the things

  376. that so far have occupied your life.

  377. Greater things that I am doing.

  378. My purpose is being accomplished.

  379. I'm going to let you see that.

  380. I'm going to let you close

  381. to that.

  382. And in fact,

  383. I'm going to let you get in on that.

  384. And so what Nathanael,

  385. as we'll see,

  386. and the other disciples,

  387. and all who follow Christ

  388. will have the privilege of seeing

  389. is the greatness of what God

  390. is accomplishing in the Lord Jesus.

  391. We see something of the greatness

  392. of what Christ is bringing

  393. to the men,

  394. to the world of men and women

  395. and boys and girls,

  396. of what God is accomplishing

  397. in Christ's presence.

  398. Through the life and work of Christ

  399. and not just seeing it,

  400. but being part of it.

  401. We cannot lose sight

  402. of this thing

  403. that Jesus is getting done,

  404. that God,

  405. according to John 1,

  406. has now broken

  407. into his world

  408. in full force.

  409. Heaven is open.

  410. God is active

  411. and all these angels

  412. are ascending

  413. and descending,

  414. representing all that God

  415. is accomplishing

  416. through Christ.

  417. Christ.

  418. And so when you come

  419. to verse 51 of John 1,

  420. we're tempted to think,

  421. isn't it,

  422. that this is something

  423. we will experience

  424. when we die,

  425. but that is not the point.

  426. It's not a description

  427. of what happens

  428. when we die in heaven.

  429. No, it's a description

  430. of what the disciples

  431. will begin to see

  432. as soon as,

  433. well, the very next day.

  434. Chapter 2 and verse 1,

  435. on the third day

  436. there was a wedding

  437. at Cana in Galilee

  438. and Jesus,

  439. the mother of Jesus

  440. was there

  441. and Jesus performs

  442. his great miracle.

  443. The first of the signs

  444. of his glory,

  445. it shows his uniqueness,

  446. his power,

  447. his authority

  448. over creation

  449. in ever so small a way

  450. it's put on display.

  451. And what they continue

  452. to see through Jesus' life,

  453. through his miracles,

  454. John says,

  455. listen, I can only write

  456. a few of them.

  457. If I were to write

  458. all the things

  459. that Jesus did in the world,

  460. there wouldn't be

  461. a library big enough

  462. to contain it.

  463. So I'm going to give you

  464. just a few signs,

  465. a few miracles

  466. that the disciples

  467. were able to witness

  468. firsthand

  469. through his teaching

  470. that had an unprecedented

  471. power,

  472. an unprecedented authority.

  473. And his life,

  474. his sinless life

  475. and through his death

  476. and most obviously

  477. through his resurrection

  478. and ascension,

  479. he will do greater things.

  480. And it won't stop there,

  481. will it?

  482. The disciples

  483. for the rest of their lives

  484. would continue to see

  485. heaven opened.

  486. They will see the glory

  487. of God's power

  488. and purpose.

  489. Through now the Holy Spirit

  490. whom Christ has sent

  491. continuing his work,

  492. amazing things happen.

  493. Amazing things happen,

  494. things happen, didn't it?

  495. people who worshipped idols

  496. turned to worship

  497. the living God.

  498. Churches were planted,

  499. the gospel spreads

  500. like wildfire

  501. through the whole

  502. subcontinent of Turkey.

  503. It leaps over the Aegean Sea

  504. into Greece

  505. and then it leaps

  506. onto the peninsula of Italy.

  507. It goes to the capital

  508. of the then world,

  509. Rome.

  510. It spreads out to Spain.

  511. Amazing things

  512. that they are able

  513. to witness.

  514. And wonderfully,

  515. it didn't stop there,

  516. did it?

  517. It hasn't stopped.

  518. The gospel of the Lord

  519. Jesus Christ,

  520. it is unstoppable.

  521. Jesus said,

  522. I will,

  523. present continuous tense,

  524. I will build my church

  525. and the gates of hell

  526. will not prevail against it.

  527. But,

  528. and so I,

  529. like many of you,

  530. could tell stories

  531. of people

  532. who have been brought

  533. from darkness

  534. into the kingdom of light.

  535. I could tell you

  536. of a tramp in Swansea

  537. who begged for money,

  538. who drank himself

  539. nearly into oblivion

  540. when I was growing up,

  541. who we'd see on the streets,

  542. who came into church

  543. and was gloriously converted

  544. and now preaches the gospel.

  545. I could tell you

  546. of a student

  547. in York last year,

  548. trapped in a spiral

  549. of drugs and depression

  550. and promiscuity

  551. who has been transformed

  552. by the gospel

  553. of the Lord Jesus Christ.

  554. I could tell you

  555. of a young mum

  556. who'd seen her life

  557. destroyed by others

  558. and betrayal and abuse

  559. who's put her trust

  560. in the Lord Jesus Christ

  561. and her life

  562. is being put back together

  563. again by God.

  564. Nathaniel,

  565. you're impressed

  566. by what you saw

  567. under the fig tree.

  568. you're impressed

  569. that I saw you,

  570. I knew you.

  571. You're impressed

  572. that I can turn water

  573. into wine

  574. just as you wait,

  575. Nathaniel.

  576. You will see

  577. greater things than these.

  578. You will see heaven opened.

  579. I could tell you

  580. of stories

  581. of missionaries

  582. in Paraguay

  583. into a place

  584. where there's been

  585. no witness

  586. for the gospel

  587. and yet now

  588. in the last ten years

  589. people have been

  590. converted

  591. and formed

  592. into a church

  593. and a church

  594. has been established.

  595. We could tell you

  596. of what we heard

  597. so wonderfully

  598. on Wednesday night

  599. from Kathleen

  600. and Daniel

  601. of how the gospel

  602. has triumphed

  603. in their lives

  604. despite great opposition

  605. and in Nigeria.

  606. With the children

  607. in Sunday school,

  608. I often think of this

  609. on a Sunday morning.

  610. We are part

  611. of a Mexican wave.

  612. We did the Mexican wave

  613. in Sunday school.

  614. We won't do it here.

  615. But you think,

  616. you should think on this

  617. on a Sunday morning.

  618. When you get up,

  619. they have already

  620. started worshipping God,

  621. haven't they?

  622. In Fiji

  623. and in Western Samoa

  624. and in Tonga

  625. and all those other places

  626. we're hearing about

  627. in the World Cup.

  628. They began worshipping God

  629. this morning

  630. and then New Zealand

  631. and Australia

  632. and all over the world

  633. and we're right

  634. in the middle of it.

  635. And the saints of God

  636. gather to worship God

  637. because Jesus said,

  638. if you follow me,

  639. you will see greater things

  640. than these.

  641. You will see heaven opened

  642. and the angels of God

  643. ascending and descending

  644. through the person

  645. and work of Jesus.

  646. Nathaniel,

  647. you're impressed

  648. by my little display

  649. of supernatural knowledge.

  650. Just wait.

  651. Wait till you see

  652. what I will do in the world.

  653. It's not just happening

  654. out there, is it?

  655. In other places,

  656. in the UK

  657. or other places

  658. in the world

  659. or on the mission field.

  660. It's happening right here.

  661. And so I look around

  662. this room

  663. and there are people

  664. sitting next to you

  665. who were without God

  666. and without hope

  667. who've been forgiven,

  668. who've been brought

  669. into God's family

  670. and added to his church.

  671. And it's not so dramatic,

  672. is it,

  673. as the tramp.

  674. But it is wonderful

  675. what is happening.

  676. People have been given

  677. a new life

  678. and a new home

  679. and have been brought

  680. into God's kingdom.

  681. They've been given,

  682. you have been given

  683. a whole new trajectory

  684. marked by peace

  685. and hope

  686. and it won't be

  687. without difficulty

  688. and it won't be

  689. without challenge.

  690. But you've been made alive

  691. in Christ

  692. because God's power

  693. and God's glory

  694. and God's sovereignty

  695. have been brought here

  696. for us to see.

  697. Because I said to you,

  698. I saw you under the fig tree.

  699. Do you believe?

  700. You will see greater things

  701. than these.

  702. And he said to him,

  703. Truly, truly,

  704. I say to you,

  705. you will see heaven opened

  706. and the angels of God

  707. ascending and descending

  708. on the Son of Man.

  709. What can you expect

  710. from the Christian life?

  711. You can expect

  712. to be brought

  713. into what God

  714. is doing in the world.

  715. Now just before I close,

  716. I want us to do

  717. one more thing.

  718. A bit like a footnote

  719. to the sermon.

  720. Because this passage

  721. teaches us

  722. not only what we should expect

  723. when we follow Christ.

  724. That there would be

  725. a claim put on our lives

  726. that we would be brought

  727. into something

  728. greater and bigger.

  729. But this passage

  730. also models to us

  731. how we get to participate

  732. in it.

  733. We get to play a part

  734. in it, don't we?

  735. You can't fail

  736. to have noticed

  737. the words,

  738. I have found the Christ.

  739. Come and see.

  740. And the first thing

  741. that Andrew does

  742. after discovering Jesus

  743. is he went

  744. and he found his brother

  745. and he brought him

  746. to Jesus.

  747. And Andrew

  748. is the first

  749. in a long line

  750. of those

  751. who've discovered

  752. that the most common

  753. and the most effective

  754. testimony

  755. is that simple

  756. communication,

  757. come and see.

  758. I found the Christ.

  759. The simple sharing

  760. of one's discovery

  761. with another.

  762. You can't help

  763. but notice,

  764. can you,

  765. that the very first thing

  766. that Philip did

  767. was go and find

  768. Nathaniel

  769. and tell him

  770. about Jesus.

  771. It's a basic principle

  772. of the Christian life.

  773. New followers

  774. of Jesus

  775. bear witness

  776. to others

  777. about Jesus

  778. and they become

  779. followers of Jesus

  780. who then bear witness

  781. to others

  782. and then become

  783. followers of Jesus.

  784. Let me give you that again.

  785. New followers of Jesus

  786. bear witness

  787. followers of Jesus

  788. to others

  789. who then become

  790. followers of Jesus

  791. who then bear witness

  792. to others

  793. who then become

  794. followers of Jesus.

  795. It's very simple,

  796. isn't it?

  797. It's probably

  798. the reason

  799. why you're sitting

  800. here today.

  801. Do you see the pattern?

  802. If God has laid

  803. a claim

  804. on your life

  805. which if you are

  806. trusting in the Lord

  807. Jesus Christ

  808. he has

  809. and if Christ

  810. has allowed you

  811. to see

  812. that you are

  813. part of a

  814. far more glorious

  815. and a far greater

  816. thing that is

  817. happening all

  818. around you

  819. then you have

  820. also been given

  821. the great privilege

  822. of being used

  823. by God

  824. to share

  825. what Jesus

  826. has brought

  827. into your life

  828. with others.

  829. I have found

  830. the Christ.

  831. Come and see

  832. to his glory

  833. let us pray.
