  1. Do turn to John chapter 2. If you've got a church Bible, it's page 886. And let me encourage

    John 2 chapter mention

  2. ! If you didn't hear me at the start, do stay around afterwards. There's no need to rush

  3. ! You're off this tea, and we'd love to get to know you. And so we're going through John's

  4. Gospel, and we come this morning to John 2, 1 to 11, to the wedding in Canaan of Galilee,

  5. Canaan of Galilee, where Jesus turned water into wine. As I was working on this passage

  6. this week, I took one of the commentaries that I don't normally look at on John from

  7. a top shelf, and as I pulled the book down from one of the top shelves, a whole collection

  8. of little pieces of chocolate fell onto my head. I'd obviously been hiding them up there.

  9. They were Toblerone. It was delicious. It wasn't what I was expecting. It wasn't what I was

  10. expecting. And I think that nicely sums up John 2, 1 to 11. It's so familiar, isn't it?

  11. So, so familiar. Jesus turning water into wine. But there's something completely wonderful going

  12. on here. I think unexpected. Why would Jesus choose a wedding as the first place to do a miracle?

  13. I mean, it's not saving people from death, is it? It's not saving people from disease.

  14. It's saving them from embarrassment, maybe, and turning water into wine. But it seems so

  15. commonplace. Seems so domestic, undramatic. What's the point of this miracle? And you can hear sermons

  16. on all these kind of themes. Is Jesus the best guest to invite to your wedding? Is John 2 pro-marriage?

  17. So let's have a sermon on marriage. Is this passage pro-wine? Or is it anti-wine? As one of the commentators

  18. incredibly says. Or are we meant to be like Mary, Jesus' mother, speaking words of wisdom?

  19. And I hope you'll be grateful to know that it's none of those things. And John actually teaches

  20. something, asks something about the reason why he includes the sign. Look at verse 11.

  21. Look at verse 11, what it says.

  22. This, the first of his signs, Jesus did at Cana in Galilee, and manifested his glory.

  23. So by the time we get to the end of the Gospel of John, John tells us,

  24. listen, if I'd written everything that Jesus did, all the books in all the world would not be able to contain them.

  25. And so I've had to be really selective. I've selected the different signs.

  26. He selects what he reports to us. And there are only seven of these miraculous signs that John writes.

  27. This is one of them. And so the basis on which John chooses the signs is so that you would see that Jesus

  28. is the Son of God, and that today you might believe in Jesus, and you might have life in his name.

  29. And so turning water into wine is not just some big power miracle.

  30. It is a sign that points you to something.

  31. It shows you something else. It's not a party trick.

  32. And when John says it's the first of his signs, he could mean it's the first chronologically.

  33. It's the first one that he did.

  34. And that he'd not done any miracles before this.

  35. But the same word is used at the start of the Gospel, in the beginning.

  36. And so the word, it can mean first, not just chronologically, but in primacy.

  37. As in primary, that the sign of water into wine is actually foundational.

  38. The sign of John 2 is the basis on which all the other signs are built.

  39. And I think John is saying to you and I that the turning of the water into wine is actually a doorway sign

  40. to all the others.

  41. That you won't really understand all the other signs unless you understand this sign.

  42. And I know it's so obvious, isn't it?

  43. It's so obvious that this miracle is a miracle of change.

  44. It's a miracle of transformation from one thing into another, of water into wine.

  45. And that is the sign of the great change that Jesus has come to bring.

  46. Of what it means to have life in his name.

  47. And so do you remember last week, the second last verse of John chapter 1,

    John 1 chapter mention

  48. said you will see greater things.

  49. You'll see greater things than these, who was it?

  50. Nathaniel.

  51. Well, what are these greater things?

  52. You go straight into chapter 2, verse 1, here they are.

  53. Jesus has said, isn't he, I am the connection between heaven and earth.

  54. But you will see greater things than this.

  55. Well, what does it look like?

  56. In the ordinary, common circumstances of our lives?

  57. Well, it's complete transformation.

  58. It's water into wine.

  59. That's why this passage starts on the third day.

  60. Do you notice that in verse 1?

  61. Chapter 1, do you remember where that starts?

  62. It starts in eternity.

  63. In the beginning was the Word.

  64. Do you remember that?

  65. And it comes right down to earth.

  66. It moves from cosmic to practical, personal.

  67. From cosmic right down to individual.

  68. And so chapter 2, verse 1, it's a new week.

  69. It's a new week.

  70. The third day.

  71. This new week, because what Jesus is doing is nothing short of new creation.

  72. We've spoiled the old creation.

  73. And Jesus has come to restore, to recreate, to transform.

  74. And this sign is a demonstration showing that.

  75. And the reason that this is important, the reason that we're even talking about that today,

  76. is that what Jesus did then, he is able to do now.

  77. And he is more than able and willing to do that for you now.

  78. And so I want to look at this passage around two surprises.

  79. There are two surprising things.

  80. And the first surprise is, he shows us the basis of the change.

  81. That's the first surprise, the basis of the change.

  82. And he points to Jesus' death.

  83. The second surprise shows us the result of the change.

  84. And it points to Jesus' life in us.

  85. So here's the first surprise.

  86. The basis of our change.

  87. And I think the surprise is this interaction between Mary and Jesus.

  88. I don't know whether you picked it up when Chris read it to us.

  89. It's so abrupt, isn't it, that little interchange?

  90. Despite the best attempts of commentators to smooth it over,

  91. Jesus' words to his mother are sharp.

  92. Verses 1 and 2.

  93. On the third day, there was a wedding at Cana in Galilee.

  94. And the mother of Jesus was there.

  95. Jesus was also invited to the wedding with his disciples.

  96. And the event is played out like a perfectly normal Saturday afternoon wedding.

  97. You get the date, you get the occasion, you get the place.

  98. You get the guest list.

  99. It's a family wedding.

  100. It's in a little place not far from Nazareth.

  101. And it may well be a relative of Mary's.

  102. Mary is invited.

  103. She certainly seems to be involved in the wedding.

  104. And Jesus is invited.

  105. And five very big eating disciples are invited too.

  106. And it's likely Mary is related to the family.

  107. She seems to be in close touch with the kitchen staff.

  108. She may be helping.

  109. And before we go on, it's worth pointing out, isn't it,

  110. that Jesus is very different from John the Baptist.

  111. Jesus had a social life.

  112. Jesus is not an ascetic like John the Baptist.

  113. Jesus is not anti-marriage.

  114. He's not anti-parties.

  115. And often in the Gospels, we find him going to a feast, at a feast, or coming from a feast.

  116. And then early on, just at the beginning of verse 3,

  117. there's a catering catastrophe.

  118. The wine runs out.

  119. It's a perfectly normal crisis.

  120. It's the kind of thing that happens to you and to me on a regular basis.

  121. And it's the perfect context for Jesus' first sign.

  122. Because just like the wine running out, we are always running out.

  123. Everything in our lives, every natural joy and pleasure we have runs out.

  124. I mean, this happy wedding couple on their wedding day, with their wedding guests,

  125. even those people are not going to last.

  126. The bride and groom, they might have children, but they will grow old and they will eventually die.

  127. Their health will run out.

  128. Their capacities will run out.

  129. Their time will run out, just like yours and just like mine.

  130. And that's what makes this interchange between Mary and Jesus so surprising.

  131. If you just look down at chapter 2, verse 3, Jesus' mother says to him,

  132. they have no wine.

  133. Whether she said it through gritted teeth, not out loud, they have no wine.

  134. To which he says in verse 4, and it's even sharper in the original,

  135. woman, what does this have to do with me?

  136. What are you to me, woman, literally?

  137. And then Mary says, not to Jesus, but to the servants,

  138. do whatever he tells you.

  139. And I've got to say, honestly, I don't know what to make of it.

  140. I really don't.

  141. Because you can read it all the way from a very positive example of faith,

  142. that Mary is being this wonderfully faith-filled woman,

  143. or you can read it in being a meddling, manipulative mother.

  144. And I can line up the books along that divide.

  145. However, it is a surprise, isn't it?

  146. Jesus' words, they are not rude, but they are unusual.

  147. What are you to me?

  148. And then he says this, my hour, literally, has not yet come.

  149. And he's clearly pushing back on Mary, isn't he?

  150. He is putting a line between himself and his mother.

  151. He's placing a bit of distance between him and his mum.

  152. He's establishing a distance, which I think is a bit of a surprise for Mary.

  153. And it's a surprise for us.

  154. And then when you read John's Gospel, you'll see that Jesus does this again and again.

  155. As somebody comes to him in desperate need,

  156. and they ask for Jesus' help, and Jesus says no.

  157. And then he goes around and he does something more wonderful than the miracle they asked for in the first place.

  158. So, for example, in John chapter 4, an official comes to Jesus, whose son is at the point of death,

    John 4 chapter mention

  159. and asks for Jesus for help, and Jesus' response is a strong rebuke.

  160. Because, you see, the official is in danger of just believing in Jesus' power,

  161. and not believing in Jesus himself.

  162. And he wants to give him the greater gift of believing in himself.

  163. And when the man goes, Jesus heals the boy, even from a distance.

  164. I think of John 11.

  165. Lazarus, Jesus' friend, his close friend, is very sick.

  166. The sisters send off to Jesus and say,

  167. Come, the one you love is sick, Lord.

  168. And they think that Jesus could help before Lazarus died.

  169. They've got no idea that Jesus has power over death itself.

  170. So Jesus waits, doesn't he?

  171. And he waits until Lazarus has been in the grave three days.

  172. And we're told he raises Lazarus from the dead,

  173. and he gives him a greater gift

  174. to show them that he is the Lord of life and death.

  175. And so each time Jesus does this in the gospel,

  176. the key to it is, why is he saying no?

  177. Why is Jesus saying no?

  178. Each time he says no to the person,

  179. he is trying to move them, isn't he?

  180. Out of their spiritual danger, into faith in him.

  181. And here at the wedding feast,

  182. Jesus is indicating to his mum

  183. that there's a change in their relationship.

  184. That he is no longer, if I can put it like this,

  185. primarily Mary's son.

  186. He is primarily the son of God.

  187. That he does not belong to anyone.

  188. He's not going to be there for anyone's agenda.

  189. And so what is the greater thing that he's going to do?

  190. Well, he says, my hour has not yet come.

  191. And if you've read John's gospel,

  192. you'll know that when he talks about the hour,

  193. he is referring to his death on the cross.

  194. It's used seven times,

  195. and each time when Jesus speaks of my hour,

  196. he's referring to the cross.

  197. And so can you see right here,

  198. at the start of his ministry,

  199. in this foundational sign,

  200. Jesus has his death in mind.

  201. That the essence and pivot of his ministry is his death.

  202. And I think that's really helpful to us,

  203. because if he hadn't talked about his death,

  204. then we wouldn't really be able to understand this sign.

  205. Because what you see Jesus is trying to do

  206. by turning water into wine

  207. is a sign of his transformation.

  208. The sign of transformation that he will bring

  209. through his death.

  210. Now, if you've fallen asleep,

  211. as some of you have,

  212. come back for a moment and listen, all right?

  213. It's not, is it,

  214. that Jesus does lots and lots

  215. of wonderful,

  216. magical signs,

  217. and his life is tragically cut short.

  218. That is not the message of the gospel.

  219. All his power

  220. and all his work

  221. run through the nexus of the cross.

  222. Everything goes through the cross.

  223. And it is because of his death

  224. that his power is available to us.

  225. Otherwise, we are just spectators

  226. looking at this miracle.

  227. If you separate Jesus' death from the signs,

  228. in the end,

  229. we just want to use him

  230. for what we want.

  231. He becomes a tool for our agendas

  232. rather than us being drawn

  233. into the plan and agenda of God.

  234. And Jesus keeps warning you about this

  235. all the time.

  236. He feeds the 5,000

  237. and he says something like this.

  238. You are after me

  239. because of the signs,

  240. not really because of what they point to.

  241. I filled your bellies

  242. with food

  243. and that's the only reason

  244. you're following me.

  245. So here's the first surprise.

  246. That Jesus connects

  247. this transformation

  248. with his death.

  249. Water into wine

  250. is a sign of his death.

  251. That is the basis for change.

  252. Secondly, what's the result

  253. of the change?

  254. And the result of the change

  255. is that the life of Jesus

  256. comes to us.

  257. The gospel is all about life.

  258. That is the great theme

  259. of John's gospel.

  260. He's writing these words

  261. so that you might believe in Jesus

  262. and have life in his name

  263. but we need pictures,

  264. don't we?

  265. We need pictures to see

  266. what is that life going to be like?

  267. What is that life all about?

  268. And the basic picture

  269. of somebody who was without God

  270. and without hope

  271. who begins to follow

  272. the Lord Jesus Christ

  273. is that they are changed.

  274. They are transformed.

  275. They are transformed.

  276. They are transformed.

  277. It's like being changed

  278. from ordinary plain water

  279. into something that is living

  280. and fermenting,

  281. if you will,

  282. and changing.

  283. It's not just ideas

  284. we're talking about.

  285. It is not just spiritual change

  286. that is confined

  287. into my inner experience.

  288. It is a miracle

  289. of power

  290. with a particular date

  291. and an occasion

  292. and a guest list.

  293. Here is a change

  294. in the material world

  295. showing what the Lord Jesus Christ

  296. will do for us

  297. if we'll put our trust in him.

  298. And John so wants us

  299. to get this

  300. that he doesn't even show you

  301. the miracle happening.

  302. Did you notice that?

  303. He only shows you the results.

  304. Have you noticed

  305. he does that

  306. all the way through the Gospels?

  307. There's no razzle-dazzle.

  308. The miracle itself is narrated.

  309. The actual changing

  310. of the water and wine

  311. happens in between

  312. verse 7 and verse 8.

  313. Look at verse 7.

  314. Look down there, please.

  315. Jesus tells the servants

  316. to fill in these stone water jars

  317. with water.

  318. They fill them to the brim

  319. the end of verse 7.

  320. The next thing he tells them

  321. draw out, verse 8,

  322. some of the water

  323. and take it to the MC.

  324. But it's already been changed.

  325. The master of ceremonies.

  326. He loves it.

  327. And in case we missed it

  328. verse 9, John tells us

  329. the water has now become wine.

  330. So where did the miracle happen?

  331. It happened somewhere

  332. between the end of verse 7

  333. and the beginning of verse 8.

  334. We don't even get to see it.

  335. But the effects are very big.

  336. What are the effects?

  337. There's three of them.

  338. There's three effects.

  339. Number one, newness.

  340. Number two, goodness.

  341. Number three, fullness.

  342. First, this change that Jesus makes,

  343. it's newness.

  344. And what were the water jars for?

  345. And what were they for?

  346. They were for the Jewish rite

  347. of purification.

  348. They are connected, aren't they,

  349. to washing on the outside.

  350. But by filling them with water

  351. and turning them into wine,

  352. Jesus creates, doesn't he,

  353. something completely new.

  354. Something completely different.

  355. It's not the old with a bit of cordial mixed in

  356. with a bit of squash in it.

  357. It is de novo.

  358. It is a new creation.

  359. It is a different thing.

  360. He has transformed stuff

  361. that was used for ritual,

  362. formal practice

  363. into something which is brilliant

  364. and alive

  365. and will meet ordinary human needs

  366. and will bring joy.

  367. It's what God promised

  368. in the Old Testament.

  369. That when the Messiah would come,

  370. the mountains would drip sweet wine

  371. and all the hills would flow with it

  372. and I will restore the fortunes

  373. of my people Israel.

  374. Jesus is not just shuffling around

  375. the different elements in the world.

  376. He's not like a clever cook

  377. that goes to the cupboard

  378. and says,

  379. I'll see what I can do

  380. with a little bit of this

  381. and a little bit of that.

  382. No, he says,

  383. I will create something new.

  384. He's not just taking natural life

  385. and lifting it to a new level.

  386. He is creating

  387. a different order of things.

  388. And so if you make wine,

  389. some of you have made wine

  390. and you home-brewed it,

  391. it is a carefully controlled process

  392. of decay and fermentation

  393. for flavor.

  394. And there's a need

  395. for an aging process

  396. to bring out the flavor,

  397. so I'm told.

  398. And it depends, doesn't it,

  399. on the bottling

  400. and the storage

  401. and the casks

  402. and the corks.

  403. Some of you will remember

  404. that Graham used to home-brew

  405. the wine Chateau Weeks,

  406. as it was known,

  407. that we used in communion.

  408. And we're very grateful

  409. he did that for many years.

  410. But,

  411. it could have probably done

  412. with a bit more of a process,

  413. that wine,

  414. but there was a process to it,

  415. wasn't there, you know?

  416. And there are some very expensive bottles

  417. of wine about,

  418. aren't there?

  419. And the most expensive bottle

  420. of red wine

  421. in London at the moment

  422. is a 1987

  423. Henri J.Richberg.

  424. Rieschberg.

  425. Henri J.Richberg.

  426. Grand Chew,

  427. as they say in Wales.

  428. It'll cost you £31,200.

  429. That's a bottle of red.

  430. The most expensive bottle of white

  431. ever sold in London

  432. was a 200-year-old bottle

  433. of Chateau D'Kiem.

  434. It was purchased in 2011

  435. for a whopping £75,000.

  436. What Jesus does

  437. in these two verses,

  438. in between these two verses,

  439. is completely different

  440. from all of that.

  441. It is instantly perfect.

  442. It's not 200 years old.

  443. It's not in 1987.

  444. It's instantly perfect.

  445. The MC says

  446. it's the best wine I've ever tasted.

  447. What vintage is this?

  448. Jesus says it was made

  449. about a minute and a half ago.

  450. It's what Jesus has come to do,

  451. isn't it?

  452. Jesus has come to give

  453. newness of life.

  454. To make you new.

  455. To bring you into a new creation.

  456. Jesus has come to give you

  457. a taste of what heaven is like.

  458. Something that is constantly renewing.

  459. Newness.

  460. The second word is goodness.

  461. Growing goodness.

  462. I love the MC in this wedding.

  463. You've got to love his honesty.

  464. He's probably a semi-pro,

  465. isn't he?

  466. He's been hired indicator

  467. for weddings,

  468. make sure the guests are happy,

  469. the food keeps coming,

  470. that the wine keeps being serviced.

  471. He knows a thing or two

  472. about wine.

  473. And when he tastes the wine,

  474. he is utterly gobsmacked.

  475. He's got no idea

  476. where it's come from,

  477. but he's astounded

  478. by the quality.

  479. He's never tasted wine

  480. like this before.

  481. And so he calls the groom over

  482. and he smiles at him.

  483. And I think he winks at the groom

  484. and he says,

  485. you crafty devil,

  486. you've done the exact reverse

  487. of what normally happens.

  488. Every other wedding I've ever done,

  489. they've served the good stuff

  490. at first,

  491. and when the people have drunk

  492. quite a lot,

  493. they bring out the rubbish.

  494. Poor old groom doesn't know

  495. what he's talking about.

  496. But he's smiling as well.

  497. The MC says,

  498. you've done the reverse,

  499. you've saved the very best

  500. to the last.

  501. You see,

  502. the normal way it is

  503. in our lives,

  504. the normal direction

  505. is the head into decline,

  506. isn't it?

  507. We go from life to death.

  508. We decay.

  509. But the order of Christianity

  510. is the opposite.

  511. We go from death to life.

  512. And when Jesus makes water

  513. into wine,

  514. he is reversing

  515. the normal order of things.

  516. And that is the direction

  517. of growing goodness.

  518. It means that for you and I today,

  519. if we'll trust in Christ,

  520. we don't have to live in the past.

  521. You don't have to wallow

  522. in regret.

  523. But Christ has come for me.

  524. He has entered into this world

  525. to give me life,

  526. which means the best

  527. is in the future.

  528. And he's not just

  529. fixing up the old.

  530. He's not even replacing it.

  531. He's not just adding

  532. good things

  533. into our declining lives.

  534. He is transforming

  535. our lives

  536. with his own life,

  537. with a growing goodness.

  538. He's taking the old waters

  539. of purification,

  540. if you will,

  541. and turning them

  542. into fermenting wine,

  543. bringing life

  544. and abundance.

  545. When you think

  546. about those jars,

  547. those jars that we used

  548. for purifying yourselves,

  549. for cleaning yourselves up,

  550. it's really important

  551. you see that the change

  552. that Jesus is bringing

  553. is different to that.

  554. It's different

  555. than just purification.

  556. Let me be really clear

  557. about this.

  558. When Jesus gives us

  559. his life,

  560. it is more than purity.

  561. When Jesus gives us

  562. his life,

  563. it is more than forgiveness.

  564. It is more than cleansing,

  565. as important as they are.

  566. Jesus hasn't just

  567. come to take away

  568. your sin.

  569. He comes also

  570. to give us

  571. what we don't have.

  572. Because removing

  573. the dirt

  574. and the stains

  575. is essentially,

  576. isn't it,

  577. a negative act

  578. and can never

  579. really restore

  580. something

  581. to being new.

  582. It can't bring

  583. fullness.

  584. It can't bring joy.

  585. But what Christ

  586. has done

  587. and what he has

  588. come to do

  589. in you and me

  590. is not just

  591. to remedy

  592. our defects,

  593. but he has come

  594. to make a new creation,

  595. a new life.

  596. And it begins

  597. in this life.

  598. It is broken

  599. into this world

  600. right now.

  601. And it grows

  602. and it increases

  603. in hope

  604. and joy

  605. and fullness.

  606. So the life

  607. of Jesus

  608. means newness.

  609. Goodness.

  610. Newness.

  611. And finally,

  612. it means fullness.

  613. What does life

  614. in Jesus look like?

  615. I don't know

  616. if you've done

  617. the maths,

  618. but each of the

  619. water jars

  620. contain about

  621. 20 to 30 gallons.

  622. They're massive.

  623. It's mind-boggling.

  624. It's something

  625. like 700 litres

  626. of the best wine.

  627. wine.

  628. The Old Testament

  629. says God

  630. gave wine

  631. to gladden hearts.

  632. That's why it's

  633. important at the

  634. Lord's table

  635. we have wine.

  636. It's to gladden hearts.

  637. It's a picture

  638. of fullness.

  639. And here,

  640. with 700 litres

  641. of the best wine,

  642. there's a lot

  643. of gladness.

  644. I need to say,

  645. don't we,

  646. that we spoil this

  647. with our excess.

  648. Like all of God's

  649. good gifts,

  650. we use it for evil.

  651. It's really easy

  652. to become enslaved

  653. to God's good gifts.

  654. Just to be clear,

  655. I need to say to you,

  656. of course,

  657. getting drunk

  658. is a sin.

  659. It is something

  660. that Christians

  661. don't do.

  662. But here,

  663. clearly,

  664. wine stands

  665. for joy

  666. and gladness

  667. and fullness.

  668. And the point

  669. I'm making,

  670. and John is making,

  671. is that Jesus

  672. does not provide

  673. the bare minimum,

  674. does he?

  675. he gives ridiculous

  676. provision.

  677. Jesus doesn't just

  678. cover the embarrassment

  679. of this young couple,

  680. he gives over the top

  681. lavish satisfaction.

  682. It's like

  683. the miracle we'll see

  684. with the feeding

  685. of the 5,000.

  686. Do you remember that?

  687. And he doesn't just

  688. give enough

  689. for the 5,000.

  690. He leaves baskets

  691. and baskets

  692. and baskets

  693. and baskets

  694. over.

  695. over.

  696. And that's what

  697. verse 16

  698. of chapter 1

  699. is all about

  700. if you just glance there.

  701. This is what

  702. it's all about.

  703. John says,

  704. from his fullness

  705. we've received

  706. grace upon grace.

  707. And John is talking

  708. about the fullness

  709. of Jesus

  710. filling us.

  711. We all know,

  712. don't we,

  713. what it is to be

  714. filled with self-pity.

  715. I certainly do.

  716. Or with pride.

  717. Or to be filled

  718. with anger.

  719. or bitterness.

  720. Or to be filled

  721. with envy.

  722. Or to be filled

  723. with self-entightenment.

  724. And when you're

  725. filled with self-pity

  726. it pushes everything

  727. out, doesn't it?

  728. So you can't really

  729. think about anything

  730. else.

  731. You've got no room

  732. for anything else.

  733. Well,

  734. Jesus' deepest

  735. desire for you

  736. is that you

  737. would be filled

  738. with all his fullness.

  739. Because his fullness

  740. is the only thing

  741. that can overwhelm

  742. our fears

  743. and our pride

  744. and our self-preoccupation.

  745. And this is the

  746. character of the life

  747. that Jesus comes

  748. to bring.

  749. It's not just

  750. free his grace.

  751. It is free.

  752. But it is full

  753. and it is

  754. extravagant

  755. and plentiful.

  756. The Lord Jesus

  757. doesn't give you

  758. scraps of himself.

  759. He brings himself

  760. with all of his

  761. fullness to us.

  762. I spoke with

  763. an older man

  764. recently

  765. who said to me

  766. that he had made

  767. a list of the

  768. advantages of

  769. growing old.

  770. These are some

  771. of the things

  772. that he had

  773. on his list.

  774. These are the

  775. advantages

  776. that he as an

  777. older man

  778. as a Christian

  779. he said this is

  780. the advantage

  781. of growing old.

  782. Number one was

  783. I've got more

  784. time to pray

  785. for others.

  786. Number two

  787. I've got more

  788. time to go back

  789. over my life

  790. and see God's

  791. good hand

  792. of sovereign

  793. kindness

  794. to me.

  795. Number three

  796. I've got more

  797. time to volunteer

  798. to help others

  799. both near to

  800. where he used

  801. to live

  802. and in his

  803. church.

  804. Number four

  805. I've got more

  806. time to give

  807. specific thanks

  808. thanks for

  809. specific things.

  810. That is

  811. fullness.

  812. That's what

  813. the Apostle

  814. Paul prayed

  815. for the

  816. Christians in

  817. Ephesus

  818. that they

  819. would be

  820. filled with

  821. all the

  822. fullness of

  823. God.

  824. And I'm

  825. aware,

  826. I'm not

  827. fully aware

  828. but I'm

  829. aware a

  830. little bit

  831. as your

  832. pastor

  833. of some

  834. of the

  835. difficulties

  836. of your

  837. circumstances

  838. and some

  839. of you

  840. who are

  841. suffering

  842. greatly.

  843. And the

  844. Lord Jesus

  845. has not

  846. come into

  847. this world

  848. to give

  849. us a

  850. free pass

  851. from

  852. suffering.

  853. He doesn't

  854. airlift you

  855. out of your

  856. difficulties

  857. but what

  858. he does

  859. is he so

  860. fills us

  861. with his

  862. life that

  863. in those

  864. difficulties

  865. we know

  866. his plenty

  867. and we

  868. know his

  869. joy in

  870. the midst

  871. of our

  872. difficulties.

  873. And my

  874. experience has

  875. been

  876. that those

  877. Christians who

  878. suffer most

  879. when they

  880. are abiding

  881. in Jesus

  882. are those

  883. who are

  884. most filled

  885. with joy.

  886. And so

  887. this is the

  888. first and

  889. the foundational

  890. sign.

  891. It is about

  892. the change

  893. that Jesus

  894. has come to

  895. bring.

  896. And I

  897. wonder if you

  898. know this

  899. change.

  900. Longingly,

  901. inwardly,

  902. personally,

  903. really,

  904. the basis

  905. of his

  906. change is

  907. his death.

  908. The effects

  909. of his

  910. change are

  911. newness of

  912. life and

  913. a life of

  914. goodness and

  915. a life of

  916. fullness.

  917. And you

  918. might wonder

  919. why in

  920. verse 11,

  921. just look

  922. there,

  923. there's the

  924. last surprise,

  925. Jesus tells

  926. us that the

  927. disciples

  928. believed.

  929. But didn't

  930. they believe

  931. in chapter

  932. 1?

  933. How come

  934. they believe

  935. in chapter

  936. 2,

  937. verse 11,

  938. when we're

  939. told that

  940. they believe

  941. in chapter

  942. 1?

  943. And I

  944. think it's

  945. this,

  946. I think

  947. that believing

  948. is a

  949. process.

  950. It's not

  951. a one-off

  952. sign on the

  953. dotted line.

  954. Every single

  955. one of us

  956. here are

  957. somewhere along

  958. that process,

  959. I hope,

  960. of believing.

  961. The disciples

  962. believed in

  963. Jesus and

  964. began to

  965. follow him.

  966. And as

  967. they followed

  968. him,

  969. Jesus showed

  970. more of

  971. himself to

  972. them,

  973. and as he

  974. manifested

  975. more of

  976. himself to

  977. them,

  978. so they

  979. trusted and

  980. believed in

  981. him more.

  982. And that's

  983. exactly how it

  984. works for us

  985. today.

  986. Let's pray

  987. together.
