  2. We're going to look at the Barnabas facts tonight.

  3. I'm sure we can all think of someone of whom we'd say,

  4. where would we be without that person?

  5. In your family, you've probably got someone like that.

  6. Where would we be without them?

  7. Or certainly in church life, where would we be without that person?

  8. And so where would we be without Barnabas?

  9. Well, humanly speaking,

  10. we'd be without half of the New Testament.

  11. Because it's Barnabas in Acts chapter 9

    Acts 9 chapter mention

  12. who introduced Paul or Saul of Tarsus

  13. as he was then to the others.

  14. They're very suspicious of him.

  15. They don't want to borrow him.

  16. But Barnabas recognised what God was doing

  17. in Paul's life and he introduces him.

  18. He vouches for him to the other apostles.

  19. So can you imagine Christianity without the letters of Paul?

  20. And if it were not for Barnabas,

  21. John Mark would have gone down in church history

  22. as a backslider.

  23. That's the guy that wrote Mark's Gospel.

  24. Depending on what you think of the synoptic problem,

  25. there would be other gaps in the other Gospels.

  26. We won't go into that now.

  27. But it was Barnabas who stood up for John Mark to Paul.

  28. When Paul wanted to ditch him and say,

  29. he's not going to stick with us,

  30. if it were not for Barnabas, humanly speaking,

  31. John Mark, well, wouldn't have written his Gospel.

  32. Without Barnabas, humanly speaking,

  33. Christianity would not have become

  34. the great world movement that it is today

  35. because something really significant happened

  36. in the passage that we read.

  37. Look at what it says in Acts 11, verse 26.

    Acts 11:26

  38. For a whole year, they met with the church

  39. and they taught a great many people

  40. and it was in Antioch

  41. that the disciples were first called Christians.

  42. Up until then,

  43. Christianity had been thought of a Jewish sect, really.

  44. But now at Antioch,

  45. the door is opening for the Gentiles to come in.

  46. Christianity is going to become the world movement

  47. that we know today

  48. and it's happening in Antioch.

  49. It's why church historians have called Antioch

  50. the cradle of Christianity.

  51. It's no exaggeration, is it,

  52. that this church at Antioch

  53. became a hub of missionary activity.

  54. It planted churches all around the Mediterranean

  55. and humanly speaking,

  56. it's thanks to this man Barnabas

  57. because Barnabas was the guy

  58. that was sent down from Jerusalem to Antioch.

  59. And the Barnabas factor is crucially important

  60. to the growth and development of the Christian church.

  61. The Barnabas factor is crucial

  62. for the development of any Christian church.

  63. And so let's try and understand

  64. what that might look like for us in IPC.

  65. First of all, Barnabas the man.

  66. And then we want to look at the difference it makes

  67. when you have a man like Barnabas

  68. in your church and in your team.

  69. So first of all, who is this man?

  70. Barnabas is not his name, his real name.

  71. His real name is Joseph.

  72. Barnabas is his nickname.

  73. We know that from Acts chapter 4.

    Acts 4 chapter mention

  74. And we're told that his name was Joseph

  75. and he was a Levite, a Cypriot by birth.

  76. And he is the one that the apostles call Barnabas.

  77. It's a nickname.

  78. It means literally a tower of strength

  79. or son of encouragement.

  80. I quite like that.

  81. I quite like that the early church gave themselves nicknames.

  82. Next weekend, I'm preaching at a church weekend

  83. in Northern Ireland

  84. from a minister called James Blair.

  85. But when I preached at the Reformed Presbyterian Conference

  86. a couple of years ago,

  87. I was being introduced

  88. and then they said,

  89. and now Cream Bun is going to come and lead in prayer.

  90. And when you walked to the front,

  91. there was this man with a very small head

  92. and a very, very large body.

  93. And all the ministers called him Cream Bun.

  94. It's an amazing thing, isn't it?

  95. I quite like that though.

  96. And so it's not the equivalent of Cream Bun, is it?

  97. But in the New Testament,

  98. they had nicknames for each other.

  99. We mustn't romanticize them.

  100. Cephas, isn't it?

  101. What does that mean?

  102. It means Peter's nickname.

  103. Rock.

  104. We often think, don't we,

  105. of St. Barnabas or some stained glass window.

  106. But we think of the early church

  107. far too formally,

  108. too institutionally.

  109. The people that you read of in Acts,

  110. they're just like us.

  111. And they loved each other

  112. and they hung out with each other

  113. and they gave each other nicknames.

  114. So, son of encouragement.

  115. So Barnabas comes into the meeting

  116. and they say,

  117. well, here he is, Mr. Encouragement.

  118. And if you look at Acts 4,

  119. it says that Barnabas,

  120. he was a field owner.

  121. He sold a field that he owned.

  122. He bought it and then he sold it

  123. and he laid it at the apostles' feet.

  124. He didn't put the proceeds of that field

  125. into a superannuation fund.

  126. He didn't put it into the bank.

  127. He brought the money

  128. and he laid it at the apostles' feet.

  129. It's always encouraging

  130. when people are generous, isn't it?

  131. When they're generous

  132. in support of the Lord's work.

  133. It's a sign of blessing in the church

  134. when giving begins to increase

  135. because people are committed,

  136. not to the elders,

  137. not because the elders are

  138. kind of putting a guilt trip on you

  139. or there's a big thermometer

  140. like they do put outside some churches.

  141. But when people start to give,

  142. they are confident in their vision

  143. and they're committed to the cause.

  144. That's what's happening here.

  145. It's a supreme act of generosity

  146. on Barnabas' part,

  147. but it's much more than that.

  148. Notice we're told two things about Barnabas

  149. back in Acts chapter 4.

    Acts 4 chapter mention

  150. We're told that he was a Levite

  151. and a landowner.

  152. And in the Old Testament,

  153. those two things were exclusive.

  154. They shouldn't have happened.

  155. So when Moses is dividing up the land

  156. in the Old Testament

  157. and he's giving the tribes

  158. their inheritance,

  159. we're told there in Joshua

  160. that he didn't give a portion

  161. to the tribe of Levi

  162. and we're given the reason for that

  163. because the Lord God of Israel

  164. was the Levite's inheritance.

  165. They weren't to be landowners

  166. because God was their inheritance

  167. just as he had promised.

  168. So how can a man who's a Levite

  169. and a landowner,

  170. how can he be that?

  171. Well, in the Old Testament

  172. that couldn't be.

  173. But look what it says about this man

  174. who was a Levite and a landowner.

  175. It says he sold the field

  176. that belonged to him,

  177. he brought the money

  178. and he laid it,

  179. not on the temple treasury,

  180. he didn't go to the Jews with it,

  181. but he laid it at the feet

  182. of the apostles.

  183. As if to say,

  184. Jesus,

  185. the Jesus the apostle preached,

  186. Jesus is now my inheritance.

  187. That's what's going on.

  188. And that's why he's such an encouragement.

  189. He's totally sold out

  190. on the Lord Jesus.

  191. He's not just donating

  192. to a good cause here.

  193. He's devoting himself to Jesus.

  194. Do you see that?

  195. It's the exact opposite of Judas.

  196. So Barnabas is Judas in reverse.

  197. Remember what we're told about Judas.

  198. Judas abandoned his commitment to Jesus.

  199. He walked out on Jesus

  200. and with the proceeds of that treasury,

  201. do you remember what he did?

  202. He bought the 30 pieces of silver.

  203. He bought a field.

  204. He went into that field

  205. and he committed suicide.

  206. It's a tragically sad, sad story.

  207. Barnabas had a field

  208. and it was his by right.

  209. He owns it.

  210. He's got a holiday home in Cyprus,

  211. a timeshare property,

  212. and he sells it

  213. and with the proceeds of the sale

  214. of his land,

  215. he commits himself to Jesus

  216. as Lord of his life.

  217. That's the kind of people

  218. we should aspire to be.

  219. If God's work is to flourish amongst us,

  220. generous,

  221. committed,

  222. Christ ones,

  223. totally sold out on the Lord Jesus.

  224. Now let's take a look secondly

  225. at the difference this man makes

  226. to the cause of Christ.

  227. So come with me to chapter 11

  228. and look at verse 23 in particular

  229. because that's the key verse

  230. that we need to look at.

  231. And in that verse,

  232. we're told three things about Barnabas.

  233. We're told, first of all,

  234. what he saw.

  235. That's the first thing.

  236. And then we're told

  237. how he felt about what he saw

  238. and then we're told

  239. what he did about what he saw.

  240. So let me read the verse to you.

  241. Verse 23.

  242. When he came

  243. and saw the grace of God,

  244. he was glad

  245. and he exhorted them all

  246. to remain faithful

  247. to the Lord

  248. with steadfast purpose.

  249. For he was a good man,

  250. followed the Holy Spirit

  251. in faith,

  252. and a great many people

  253. were added to the Lord.

  254. He was glad.

  255. Let me unpack that verse.

  256. And what did he see?

  257. He saw the grace of God.

  258. Now not everybody does, do they?

  259. Do you remember in Luke 15

  260. the elder brother

  261. in the parable of the prodigal son?

  262. There are lots of elder brothers

  263. in churches

  264. and elder sisters.

  265. What you see depends

  266. on a large extent

  267. on what you're looking for.

  268. Two men

  269. looked out

  270. through prison bars.

  271. One saw

  272. mud,

  273. the other saw

  274. stars.

  275. Imagine what might have happened

  276. if they'd sent someone else

  277. other than Barnabas

  278. down to Antioch.

  279. A church bureaucrat,

  280. perhaps.

  281. Wearing his

  282. ecclesiastical spectacles

  283. and his book of church order.

  284. Not wearing his book of church order,

  285. but carrying it.

  286. What would he have seen

  287. in Antioch?

  288. He might well have seen

  289. the thin end of the wedge.

  290. If Barnabas had gone down to Antioch

  291. looking for trouble,

  292. he'd have found it.

  293. Because something quite unprecedented

  294. was happening in Antioch.

  295. Look at verses 19 to 21.

  296. It all began with the persecution

  297. in Acts chapter 8

    Acts 8 chapter mention

  298. that broke out

  299. and we're told that Stephen was killed.

  300. Up to then,

  301. they'd been stockpiling Christians

  302. in Jerusalem

  303. and God from there

  304. scattered them.

  305. And those who were scattered

  306. travelled as far

  307. as Phoenicia

  308. and Cyprus

  309. and Antioch,

  310. spreading the word

  311. amongst the Jews.

  312. And at first,

  313. some of them,

  314. however,

  315. went from Cyprus

  316. and Cyrene

  317. and they went to Antioch

  318. to speak to the Greeks

  319. telling them the good news

  320. of the Lord Jesus.

  321. These aren't professional

  322. church evangelists.

  323. They're not

  324. church planters

  325. that have been fully trained

  326. and equipped.

  327. These are grassroot

  328. grassroot Christians

  329. telling others.

  330. I was reading this week,

  331. somebody called this

  332. the great gospel sneeze.

  333. That what happens in Antioch

  334. is there's a super spreader event.

  335. And now in Antioch,

  336. there's community transmission.

  337. It's like a flashback to COVID.

  338. And there are new cases every day

  339. and we're told

  340. what it says in verse 21.

  341. And the hand of the Lord

  342. was with them.

  343. And a great number

  344. who believed

  345. turned to the Lord.

  346. It's a spontaneous work

  347. of the Holy Spirit.

  348. And when the Holy Spirit moves,

  349. often the rules

  350. go out the window.

  351. It broke all the rules.

  352. It's never been done

  353. like this before.

  354. And no doubt

  355. in a situation like this,

  356. there would have been

  357. irregularities

  358. and there would have been

  359. anomalies to sort out.

  360. And they would have been

  361. needed to be sorted out

  362. in the long term.

  363. But God was at work

  364. in Antioch.

  365. And Barnabas saw it.

  366. And he saw it.

  367. Others might talk

  368. about the problems there.

  369. Others might talk

  370. about the Jew-Gentile problem.

  371. Lots of people up there

  372. in HQ, Jerusalem,

  373. they were worried about that.

  374. But he didn't see it

  375. that way, did he?

  376. He saw it as an opportunity.

  377. So years later

  378. at the Jerusalem Council,

  379. when there's a lot

  380. of Jew-Gentile tension

  381. and it's threatening

  382. to split the church,

  383. he didn't see it

  384. as a door to slam shut.

  385. He saw what God was doing.

  386. And he saw a door

  387. opening wide

  388. for the Gentiles

  389. to be brought in.

  390. He saw the grace of God,

  391. the generosity of God

  392. to all the nations.

  393. The God of all the earth,

  394. he saw what he was doing.

  395. That God was opening

  396. a door wide

  397. for all the people

  398. to come in.

  399. He saw the grace of God.

  400. And when we come here

  401. Sunday by Sunday,

  402. is that what we see?

  403. In the faces of each other,

  404. in the conversations

  405. that we have,

  406. in the different issues

  407. of our lives,

  408. God is at work.

  409. And the grace of God.

  410. And notice Luke tells us

  411. how he felt.

  412. I love this.

  413. He saw the grace of God

  414. and how did he feel about it?

  415. He was glad.

  416. How do you know

  417. someone's glad?

  418. How do you know

  419. someone's glad?

  420. They show it,

  421. don't they?

  422. We struggle a little bit

  423. with that as Presbyterians,

  424. don't we?

  425. Luke might well have seen

  426. this with his own eyes

  427. because according to tradition,

  428. Luke was a native Antioch.

  429. There's some kind of evidence

  430. that he might well

  431. have been there

  432. at the time.

  433. If you look at

  434. the Western tradition,

  435. it introduces the words

  436. when we were gathered.

  437. Luke includes himself.

  438. Be that as it may,

  439. whether it's right or not,

  440. I'm not sure.

  441. But Luke tells us

  442. that Barnabas saw

  443. the grace of God

  444. and he was glad.

  445. Why does he bother

  446. to tell us that?

  447. He tells us that

  448. because feelings matter.

  449. We need to be better

  450. at this, don't we?

  451. It's not very British

  452. to show our feelings,

  453. but it is very Christian.

  454. I can remember when

  455. I started here

  456. and 20 years ago

  457. and we would meet

  458. on a Sunday night.

  459. That first Sunday night

  460. there were eight people

  461. and in the early days

  462. we'd meet in the church lounge,

  463. you remember it,

  464. and it gradually grew.

  465. Claire or Katie

  466. would be banging

  467. on the piano.

  468. We'd be in this little room.

  469. We were all sitting on seats

  470. that were really low

  471. to the ground

  472. and when somebody came in

  473. everyone would turn around

  474. and see what it was.

  475. But occasionally

  476. people would turn up

  477. and some would come

  478. and they would just be delighted

  479. that there was a

  480. kind of Sunday evening service

  481. where the Bible

  482. was being taught

  483. and the Gospel

  484. was being preached

  485. and they'd rejoice.

  486. But there were others

  487. who came from

  488. well-known churches

  489. and you could see them

  490. as they came in

  491. thinking,

  492. what on earth

  493. is this funny little cult?

  494. And they'd turn up their nose.

  495. It doesn't look very impressive.

  496. But those who came

  497. and were so encouraged,

  498. it was such a real encouragement,

  499. wasn't it?

  500. What a difference it is

  501. when people are glad

  502. at the grace of God.

  503. Barnabas came down,

  504. they must have been thinking

  505. instead,

  506. they must have thought,

  507. what is he going to make of us?

  508. These Gentiles,

  509. we used to be in thought

  510. of as second class citizens

  511. and now the big church

  512. in Jerusalem

  513. sends down an emissary.

  514. They must have thought,

  515. what is he going to think of us?

  516. But they didn't have to worry

  517. because as soon as he came

  518. through the door,

  519. it was written across his face.

  520. He was glad,

  521. he was glad

  522. to be amongst them,

  523. glad that God

  524. was at work amongst them.

  525. And that is an understatement.

  526. It's much,

  527. it's much stronger.

  528. But literally,

  529. he's thrilled,

  530. he's overjoyed,

  531. he's literally jumping for joy.

  532. So excited to see God

  533. at work in people's lives

  534. and I'm not very good at this.

  535. I am very good

  536. at concealing my gladness.

  537. Churches like ours

  538. often curb our gladness.

  539. Tragically,

  540. often I am

  541. more prone

  542. to put people down

  543. than to build people up.

  544. instinctively,

  545. we can speak

  546. the angry

  547. and dismissive word

  548. and damn people

  549. with faint praise

  550. and pour cold water

  551. on things

  552. far ready to criticise

  553. and rebuke

  554. than to encourage.

  555. Instead of rejoicing

  556. with the angels

  557. in heaven

  558. over one sinner

  559. who repents.

  560. What do we do?

  561. Well,

  562. we put him on probation.

  563. Let's see if it's for real.

  564. Let's see how he turns out

  565. or she turns out.

  566. If Barnabas

  567. got on the Elizabeth line

  568. tomorrow morning

  569. and saw someone

  570. reading his Bible,

  571. I would think,

  572. it's one of the JWs.

  573. It's one of the cults.

  574. But not Barnabas.

  575. Barnabas would be glad

  576. someone was reading the Bible.

  577. He saw the grace of God

  578. and he was glad.

  579. There is almost,

  580. there is something,

  581. isn't there,

  582. God-like

  583. in his gladness.

  584. I talk about this often.

  585. Do you remember

  586. that voice from heaven

  587. that came down

  588. in our Lord's baptism?

  589. He spent 30 years

  590. in obscurity

  591. and at the age of 30

  592. he is about

  593. to take the public roads

  594. to the cross

  595. and there he is

  596. at the River Jordan

  597. and John the Baptist

  598. is baptising

  599. sinful men and women

  600. in the Jordan

  601. and what does Jesus do?

  602. Jesus stands

  603. in the line of sinners.

  604. He doesn't stand aghast.

  605. He joins the queue

  606. of sinners

  607. even though

  608. he is without a sin,

  609. even though

  610. he is not a sinner.

  611. He is numbered

  612. with the transgressors

  613. because he is stepping

  614. on the road

  615. to the cross

  616. and at that very moment

  617. at his baptism

  618. he sets his face

  619. towards Jerusalem

  620. to go to the cross

  621. to die for people

  622. like you and I

  623. and heaven is opened

  624. and a voice is heard

  625. from heaven

  626. that's my boy.

  627. This is my beloved son.

  628. I'm so pleased

  629. with you.

  630. When did you last

  631. tap someone

  632. on the shoulder

  633. and say something

  634. like that?

  635. When did you last

  636. send a text message

  637. or an email

  638. to encourage a believer?

  639. How many missionaries,

  640. how many pastors,

  641. how many elders,

  642. how many Sunday school teachers,

  643. how many youth group leaders

  644. are languishing

  645. ready to give up

  646. just for want

  647. of a word of encouragement?

  648. He saw the grace of God

  649. and he was glad.

  650. But it's not only

  651. what he sees

  652. and what he feels about it,

  653. it's what he does,

  654. that's what I want you to see.

  655. Look at verse 23.

  656. When he came

  657. and saw the grace of God

  658. he was glad

  659. and he exhorted them all

  660. to remain faithful

  661. to the denomination.

  662. No, that's not right,

  663. isn't it?

  664. When he came

  665. and saw the grace of God

  666. he was glad

  667. and he exhorted them all

  668. to remain faithful

  669. to the church in Jerusalem.

  670. It doesn't say that.

  671. When he came

  672. and he saw the grace of God

  673. he was glad

  674. and he exhorted them all

  675. to remain faithful

  676. to remain true

  677. to themselves.

  678. That's not what he says.

  679. Remain faithful to the Lord

  680. with steadfast purpose.

  681. How did,

  682. how does he do that?

  683. How did he build

  684. this church

  685. of baby believers

  686. into the church

  687. which changed the world,

  688. the cradle of Christianity?

  689. How did he do that?

  690. He did two things

  691. and Barnabas went

  692. looking for help.

  693. He realized

  694. he couldn't do it

  695. on his own

  696. so he

  697. recruited a team.

  698. He knew he couldn't

  699. do it on his own

  700. so verse 25

  701. he went to Tarsus

  702. to look for his

  703. old friend Saul.

  704. And we found him,

  705. he brought him to Antioch.

  706. It's so reminiscent,

  707. isn't it,

  708. of what happened in Geneva

  709. at the time of the Reformation

  710. if you know that story.

  711. John Calvin was an intellectual

  712. and he was on his way

  713. to Germany

  714. with his books

  715. because he wanted to study

  716. and he happened

  717. to pass through Geneva

  718. and William Farrell

  719. at that time

  720. was the reformer

  721. in Geneva.

  722. And William Farrell

  723. lays hold of John Calvin

  724. and says,

  725. Calvin may God curse you

  726. in your studies

  727. if you don't join me

  728. in the work

  729. that he's called you to do.

  730. It's a great word

  731. of encouragement,

  732. isn't it?

  733. I found it worked

  734. a treat on Reuben Hunter.

  735. And the rest is history,

  736. isn't it?

  737. It's great risk

  738. putting the team together.

  739. It's super risky.

  740. Paul, this man,

  741. had been persecuted.

  742. He persecuted the church.

  743. There were people

  744. in the church in Jerusalem

  745. who would have questioned

  746. Barnabas' judgment

  747. at this point

  748. but it was a strategically

  749. brilliant thing to do.

  750. To bring Paul alongside him

  751. to share the load

  752. for one thing

  753. but at the same time

  754. for Paul to be discipled

  755. and that is because

  756. that's what Barnabas

  757. was all about.

  758. He's very intentional

  759. about it.

  760. So if you read

  761. the next chapters of Acts

  762. you can see this

  763. discipleship relationship

  764. developing and growing.

  765. It's on the first

  766. missionary journey

  767. out of Antioch

  768. it's Barnabas and Paul,

  769. Barnabas and Paul,

  770. Barnabas and Paul

  771. but very soon

  772. it flips, doesn't it?

  773. And it becomes

  774. Paul and Barnabas,

  775. Paul and Barnabas,

  776. Paul and Barnabas.

  777. And in the end

  778. Barnabas slips

  779. from the seed.

  780. And what Barnabas

  781. is doing is

  782. he's making way

  783. for Paul

  784. to enter into the ministry

  785. and he's releasing him

  786. into his role

  787. as the great apostle

  788. to the Gentiles.

  789. That's no small thing.

  790. So someone has said,

  791. isn't it,

  792. it takes more grace

  793. than I can tell

  794. to play the second fiddle

  795. well.

  796. And Barnabas was content

  797. to play second fiddle

  798. to Paul

  799. for the advance

  800. of the gospel.

  801. He's not hungry

  802. for the limelight.

  803. He doesn't want to start

  804. Barnabas International Ministries.

  805. He's willing to fade out

  806. of the picture altogether

  807. if someone better

  808. comes along.

  809. And his all-consuming passion

  810. is not that he would

  811. make a name for himself

  812. but that the name

  813. of Jesus would be known.

  814. And that is what he's about.

  815. And he saw the potential

  816. in Paul from day one.

  817. It's Barnabas

  818. that introduces Paul

  819. to the others

  820. who vouched for him

  821. when others treated him

  822. with suspicion.

  823. It was Barnabas

  824. who recruited him

  825. for ministry

  826. and mentored him

  827. on his first missionary journey

  828. and eventually

  829. stepped back

  830. out of the way

  831. and released him

  832. into his role

  833. as an apostle

  834. of the Gentiles.

  835. And he saw Paul

  836. as a bloke worth watching.

  837. He recognized him

  838. as a brilliant scholar

  839. steeped in scripture,

  840. a Roman citizen,

  841. fluent in Greek,

  842. totally familiar

  843. with contemporary culture,

  844. just the man

  845. for the job.

  846. So he recruited a team.

  847. And for a whole year,

  848. Paul and Barnabas,

  849. they meet with the church

  850. and do you see what it says

  851. there in verse 26?

  852. This is the other thing they did.

  853. They taught.

  854. They taught a great many people.

  855. And so can you just see

  856. the vital, vital link

  857. there is between encouragement

  858. and the word of God?

  859. Just don't miss that link.

  860. How do you encourage people

  861. to remain true to the Lord?

  862. You teach them the word of God.

  863. Let me just show you

  864. that in a few places, okay?

  865. So early letter of Paul's,

  866. one of the earliest

  867. is Thessalonians.

  868. The Christians are dying

  869. and Jesus has not returned

  870. and the Thessalonians

  871. are confused

  872. and they're bewildered.

  873. And their grief

  874. is compounded

  875. by a wrong thinking

  876. about Jesus' return.

  877. They're worried

  878. that their loved ones

  879. might miss out

  880. because Jesus didn't come back.

  881. So what does Paul do?

  882. Paul spells out for them

  883. the doctrine

  884. of the second coming.

  885. He teaches them

  886. sound doctrine,

  887. healthy doctrine.

  888. And when you grasp

  889. sound doctrine,

  890. it puts strength into you.

  891. It makes you healthy.

  892. And when Paul teaches them

  893. about the doctrine

  894. of the second coming,

  895. then in verse 18

  896. of chapter 4

  897. of 1 Thessalonians,

  898. he says,

  899. now encourage each other

  900. with these words.

  901. Are words all we've got?

  902. No, of course not.

  903. You can be there

  904. for one another

  905. in a situation like this

  906. when people are grieving.

  907. We cook meals

  908. for one another.

  909. We give practical help

  910. to one another.

  911. We phone.

  912. We text.

  913. You're doing that here,

  914. aren't you?

  915. But understand this.

  916. In the end,

  917. God's comfort

  918. comes to God's people

  919. through God's Word.

  920. And we need to

  921. understand that

  922. so that we need

  923. to be in the Word.

  924. We need to know

  925. sound doctrine

  926. because that is how

  927. we'll build one another up.

  928. Think of the letter

  929. to Hebrews.

  930. Hebrews 13,

    Hebrews 13:22

  931. verse 22,

  932. whoever wrote it,

  933. some people actually

  934. think Barnabas wrote it,

  935. I don't know about that,

  936. but the writer

  937. in Hebrews 13

  938. calls it a word

  939. of encouragement.

  940. Thirteen chapters,

  941. chock full of doctrine,

  942. full of Jesus,

  943. full of how Jesus

  944. fulfills the Old Testament.

  945. It's a word

  946. of encouragement.

  947. So it encourages

  948. Christians who are

  949. tempted to slip back

  950. into Judaism,

  951. to go on with the Lord.

  952. And so,

  953. the word of encouragement

  954. is you teach them

  955. about Jesus

  956. and how much better

  957. than he is,

  958. how much better

  959. he is than angels,

  960. he's better than Moses.

  961. Well, think of Romans.

  962. Romans 12,

  963. I appeal to you,

  964. the application part

  965. of the letter,

  966. I appeal to you,

  967. therefore,

  968. brothers,

  969. by the mercies of God

  970. to present your bodies

  971. as living sacrifices,

  972. holy and acceptable to God,

  973. which is your spiritual worship.

  974. That's the pointy end

  975. of Romans.

  976. Romans.

  977. Romans.

  978. That we are to be

  979. living sacrifices.

  980. And someone has said,

  981. isn't it,

  982. the problem with the living

  983. sacrifice,

  984. you're forever

  985. climbing off the altar.

  986. And Paul says,

  987. I appeal to you,

  988. therefore,

  989. by the mercies of God.

  990. What are they?

  991. What are the mercies of God?

  992. Well,

  993. that's Romans 1 to 8.

  994. Romans,

  995. Hebrews,

  996. they're the biggest books

  997. in the New Testament.

  998. We've got to get our heads

  999. around them,

1000. and we encourage one another

  1001. with these words.

  1002. So we're told,

  1003. aren't we,

  1004. for a whole year,

  1005. Barnabas and Paul,

1006. they taught loads of people,

  1007. don't underestimate

  1008. what that is.

1009. Antioch is the third largest city

1010. in the world at that time.

1011. Next to Rome and Alexandria,

1012. it's 20 times the size of Jerusalem.

  1013. It's densely populated

  1014. and cosmopolitan.

  1015. It's far more multicultural

  1016. than you would think.

  1017. Greeks,

  1018. Romans,

  1019. Indians,

  1020. Chinese,

  1021. Jews,

  1022. Arabs,

  1023. and Persians

  1024. lived in Antioch.

  1025. There were 18 different

  1026. ethnic quarters

  1027. separated by high walls

  1028. to protect the inhabitants

  1029. from each other.

1030. And now see what happens.

1031. The gospel comes to town

1032. and the walls come tumbling down.

1033. And that's what needs to happen

  1034. in London,

  1035. isn't it?

1036. And in every major city,

  1037. people leave their ghettos

  1038. and their old hostilities

1039. and they become Christ ones.

  1040. That's what's happened here.

1041. And that has come into their vocabulary,

  1042. Christ ones in Antioch

  1043. for the first time.

1044. And if the gospel can do that

  1045. in Antioch,

1046. it can do that here,

  1047. it can do that

1048. wherever else it is preached.

1049. But it won't happen overnight.

  1050. In Antioch,

  1051. it took 12 months

  1052. of week in,

  1053. week out

1054. teaching the word of God.

  1055. And I hope

  1056. that's what you understand

1057. that we're committed to here,

  1058. the regular systematic teaching

1059. and preaching of the word of God.

  1060. The word of God

  1061. is spirit and life.

  1062. And it renews us.

1063. It puts strength into us.

  1064. It encourages us.

1065. When the people of God

  1066. come

1067. to worship the living God

1068. and hear the word of God,

  1069. God speaks.

  1070. There's nothing more important

  1071. in church life.

  1072. There's no better place

  1073. for any of us

  1074. than to be sitting

1075. under the ministry of the word.

1076. And we ought to be so thankful

1077. to God that we're able

  1078. to do that.

  1079. Right in the center

  1080. of all of this

  1081. is this man

1082. that the Lord raised up,

  1083. Mr. Encouragement.

  1084. This was his ministry.

1085. I am thrilled to say

  1086. that there are lots

  1087. of Barnabases

  1088. and lots of

  1089. Barnabases

  1090. and IPC.

  1091. Barnalases.

  1092. And the ministry

  1093. of encouragement

  1094. and

  1095. encouragement

  1096. is not something

  1097. that you're born with.

  1098. Encouragement

1099. is not in your genes.

1100. It's not like the color

  1101. of your eyes

1102. or the shape of your nose.

  1103. It's not something

1104. that you can pick up

  1105. by reading

  1106. the right books

  1107. or attending a seminar.

  1108. It's not a skill.

  1109. It's not a technique

  1110. that you can learn.

  1111. It is something spiritual.

1112. So see what it says

  1113. in verse 24

  1114. as we finish.

1115. Barnabas was a good man

  1116. full of faith

  1117. and the Holy Spirit.

1118. Barnabas was a good man

1119. full of the Holy Spirit

  1120. and of faith.

1121. That is not a bad epitaph

1122. to put on your gravestone,

  1123. is it?

  1124. I wouldn't mind

1125. having that on my tombstone.

1126. Full of the Holy Spirit.

  1127. So think with me

  1128. for a moment

  1129. as we finish.

  1130. Barnabas is Mr. Encourager.

  1131. The Holy Spirit

  1132. is the encourager

  1133. par excellence.

  1134. In some translations

  1135. of the Bible

  1136. he's called the comforter.

  1137. Right in the middle

  1138. of that word comforter

  1139. is the word fort.

  1140. He is the fortifier.

  1141. He is the one

1142. who puts strength into us.

  1143. The Greek word

  1144. is paraclete.

  1145. And so apparently

  1146. every army

  1147. had a paraclete

  1148. whose job

  1149. was to address

  1150. the troops

  1151. before going into battle.

  1152. To give them strength.

  1153. To give them

  1154. fortitude.

1155. To make them feel invincible.

1156. To give the team talk.

  1157. That was his job.

  1158. Isn't that what

  1159. the Holy Spirit

  1160. does in the heart

  1161. of the believer?

1162. As the word of God

  1163. is preached

  1164. he points to Christ

  1165. and his finished work

  1166. on the cross

  1167. and he convinces us

  1168. that we are more

  1169. than conquerors

  1170. through him

  1171. who loved us.

  1172. And so tonight

1173. you want to be a Barnabas

1174. and I really hope you do.

  1175. Be filled

  1176. with the Holy Spirit

  1177. and point people

  1178. away from yourself

  1179. to Christ.

  1180. Let's pray.
