  1. Well, do turn to John 7.

  2. John chapter 7, and we'll look at verses 1 to 24.

    John 7 chapter mention

  3. You know what it's like, don't you, in London in the summertime.

  4. It's beautiful sunshine, and then the cloud comes over, isn't it?

  5. Dark, menacing clouds of hostility.

  6. And you know what's coming.

  7. You know that at some point there's been a period of pressure,

  8. and at some point the clouds will break, the heavens will open,

  9. and there'll be a deluge of rain.

  10. And what you see in John 7, 1 to 24,

  11. are dark, menacing clouds of hostility

  12. that haven't yet broken out into the open.

  13. Remember chapter 6?

  14. Chapter 6, it started, there were 5,000 people.

  15. 5,000 people coming and following Jesus,

  16. sitting under his teaching.

  17. They have their breath taken away by his miracles.

  18. They enjoy a feast that Jesus provides.

  19. And then Jesus says, in chapter 6,

  20. boys and girls, men and women,

  21. unless you eat my flesh and drink my blood,

  22. you are not going to have eternal life.

  23. And people think he's gone over the deep end.

  24. It's blasphemy, it's cannibalism,

  25. it's too intense,

  26. and they leave en masse.

  27. There's a whole lot of them.

  28. It's a big rejection.

  29. Jesus goes from 5,000 people following him to 12.

  30. He goes from being a mega church pastor

  31. to a small group leader in four hours.

  32. And you're thinking that's pretty bad, isn't it?

  33. Another chapter doesn't finish, chapter 6,

  34. before Jesus says that one of his own 12 hand-picked disciples

  35. is going to reject him.

  36. It's another hit.

  37. It's rock bottom, isn't it?

  38. Another form of rejection.

  39. And you think, well, it can't get any worse.

  40. But then you come to chapter 7,

  41. and we'll see that the rejection of Jesus

  42. is even operating within his own family,

  43. from his brothers who came from the same womb.

  44. So John 7 begins with him leaving the north in Galilee,

  45. and relatively safely,

  46. in order to go down to the south,

  47. and Judea, into real danger.

  48. And the storm clouds darken of opposition.

  49. There's a dark background to John chapter 7.

    John 7 chapter mention

  50. And as the events unfold,

  51. there's no doubt that the main theme of this chapter

  52. is the rising tide of opposition towards Jesus.

  53. The rising opposition to who he says he is.

  54. And that is something, isn't it,

  55. with which we're not completely unfamiliar with as a society.

  56. Ruben's really helpfully shown us that in James, hasn't he?

  57. That we're living in a negative culture.

  58. Storm clouds gathering over Christ's church.

  59. And so we should be interested in what John has to tell us in chapter 7.

  60. Just look with me.

  61. See the theme.

  62. Verse 1.

  63. They're seeking to kill him.

  64. Verse 13.

  65. There's a fear of the Jews,

  66. so no one spoke openly about him.

  67. In verse 19,

  68. he asked,

  69. why do you seek to kill me?

  70. In verse 20,

  71. you have a demon.

  72. Verse 25.

  73. They are whispering about him.

  74. Is not this the man they seek to kill?

  75. Verse 30.

  76. They talk about arresting him,

  77. but don't.

  78. And then in verse 32,

  79. you see the same theme.

  80. And verse 45.

  81. The chapter is about the rising tide of opposition

  82. towards Jesus.

  83. And what I want us to do

  84. is just look at the three groups.

  85. I'll spend far longer on the last group.

  86. But the three groups in these first 24 verses.

  87. The first group is the brothers of Jesus.

  88. Look at verse 3 and following.

  89. Leave here, they say,

  90. and go to Judea.

  91. Go to Judea,

  92. that your disciples,

  93. your followers, Jesus,

  94. may also see the works that you are doing.

  95. And it seems to me that actually

  96. there's a touch of manipulation there.

  97. Even a touch of cynicism.

  98. Jesus, if you want to be a main player

  99. on the religious scene,

  100. you need to get amongst the big boys

  101. in Jerusalem.

  102. There's no point wasting your time

  103. here in the sticks.

  104. There's no point ministering

  105. in a place like Cornwall

  106. or South Wales.

  107. Who's ever heard of places like that?

  108. Jesus, you need to be in

  109. St Paul's Cathedral,

  110. Westminster Abbey.

  111. You need to be in the corridors

  112. of religious power.

  113. Verse 4.

  114. No one works in secret

  115. if he seeks to be known.

  116. If you want to be a public figure,

  117. don't hide the light under a bushel.

  118. If you do these things,

  119. show yourself to the world.

  120. We can hardly believe it, can we?

  121. That the brothers,

  122. the flesh and blood of God incarnate

  123. would come out with something like this.

  124. They had ate meals

  125. with God incarnate.

  126. They had done sweating work at times.

  127. They had had relaxing holiday times

  128. with God manifest in the flesh

  129. for 30 years.

  130. They knew him.

  131. And yet the explanation is given

  132. in verse 5 where we learn

  133. that they are not believers.

  134. And that in a sense makes the puzzle

  135. all the greater, doesn't it?

  136. These brothers of Jesus,

  137. they've been with him all these years

  138. and yet they don't believe in him

  139. or accept his message.

  140. Such misunderstanding.

  141. And of course that puzzle exists today,

  142. doesn't it?

  143. Those who've had most access

  144. to the truth of the gospel,

  145. but they can't see it.

  146. Members of a family,

  147. maybe in your family,

  148. they've had a living Christian

  149. living amongst them

  150. for years and years and years,

  151. but they don't believe it.

  152. They reject it.

  153. And so if that is you,

  154. don't beat yourself up

  155. mercilessly as a failure.

  156. You may feel like you've been

  157. the only Christian in your family

  158. for years and years

  159. and nobody seems to take

  160. the slightest bit of notice

  161. or has got the slightest clue

  162. about who you are

  163. and who you love.

  164. So great encouragement, isn't it?

  165. That the same thing happened

  166. to the Son of God.

  167. He knows.

  168. And don't you think

  169. in chapter 7 and verses 3 and 4,

  170. Jesus felt acute pain

  171. and hurt and anguish.

  172. Here is his own kith and kin,

  173. his own flesh and blood

  174. through Mary

  175. and they haven't got a clue.

  176. But the story, of course,

  177. has encouragement at the end of it.

  178. There's a postscript, isn't there?

  179. That by the time you get

  180. to the Acts of the Apostles,

  181. the brothers have become disciples.

  182. And one of them was James,

  183. the brother of our Lord,

  184. who became a great leader

  185. in the early church.

  186. So do not lose heart.

  187. Do not lose heart.

  188. The Gospel means

  189. that very surprising things

  190. can happen to people.

  191. Very surprising things.

  192. That's the first group,

  193. the brothers.

  194. The second group is the Jews,

  195. the Jewish people.

  196. They're mentioned in verse 1,

  197. but they're mentioned

  198. more specifically

  199. in verse 11 and 13 and 15.

  200. Now by Jews,

  201. he probably means Judeans.

  202. That is the general population

  203. that's in and around

  204. the capital city, Jerusalem.

  205. And if the brothers' opposition

  206. is marked by cynicism,

  207. then Judea's opposition

  208. to Jesus is marked by confusion.

  209. And that confusion is seen

  210. in that divided estimate

  211. of Jesus they have.

  212. Look at verse 12.

  213. Some say he's a good man.

  214. Some say he's a good man.

  215. Others say,

  216. no, he's leading the people astray.

  217. I want to pause for a moment

  218. and just ask,

  219. which of the two reactions

  220. in verse 12

  221. are the more confused?

  222. There's a question.

  223. Which of the two reactions

  224. in verse 12,

  225. good man or leading the people astray,

  226. is the more confused?

  227. Those who thought Jesus

  228. was a good man

  229. or those who thought

  230. Jesus was a deceiver?

  231. And so we're not the kind of church

  232. that normally asks you

  233. to raise your hands,

  234. but we're going to do it tonight.

  235. All right?

  236. Okay.

  237. So think about the question.

  238. Do you think

  239. that the more confused attitude

  240. was those who said

  241. Jesus was a deceiver?

  242. If so,

  243. raise your hands now.

  244. I'm serious, right?

  245. Or do you think

  246. that the more confused

  247. were those who Jesus said,

  248. who said Jesus

  249. was a good man?

  250. If you think the second,

  251. raise your hands now.

  252. There's about three quarters

  253. abstentions.

  254. You're a disgrace.

  255. You really are.

  256. Okay, so you're not too sure,

  257. are you?

  258. Even the elders

  259. are slightly bottling it.

  260. I think it's the second group.

  261. Let me read to you

  262. the quote from C.S. Lewis

  263. that most of you

  264. have heard before.

  265. C.S. Lewis says this,

  266. I'm trying here

  267. to prevent anyone

  268. saying the really foolish thing

  269. that people often say about him.

  270. I'm ready to accept Jesus

  271. as a great moral teacher,

  272. but I don't accept

  273. his claim to be God.

  274. That is the one thing

  275. we must not say.

  276. A man who was merely a man

  277. and said the sort of things

  278. Jesus said

  279. would not be

  280. a great moral teacher.

  281. He would either be a lunatic

  282. on the level with the man

  283. who says he's a poached egg

  284. or else he would be

  285. the devil of hell.

  286. You must make your choice.

  287. Either this man was

  288. and is the son of God

  289. or else a madman

  290. or something worse.

  291. You can shut him up

  292. for a fool.

  293. You can spit at him

  294. and kill him as a demon

  295. or you can fall at his feet

  296. and call him Lord and God.

  297. But let us not come

  298. with any patronizing nonsense

  299. about his being

  300. a great human teacher.

  301. He's not left that open to us.

  302. He did not intend to.

  303. Some of the Jews,

  304. verse 20,

  305. if you look there,

  306. they thought he was mad.

  307. You've got a demon.

  308. That's an option.

  309. Some of the Jews,

  310. verse 12,

  311. said you're bad.

  312. He's a deceiver.

  313. That's an option.

  314. And others of the Jews

  315. said he was good.

  316. Verse 12,

  317. he's a good man

  318. but that is not an option.

  319. So they're more confused.

  320. In the midst of all the confusion

  321. that there was

  322. in the opposition to Jesus

  323. at this time

  324. and that confusion

  325. still exists today,

  326. doesn't it?

  327. People still have views

  328. about the Lord Jesus

  329. that are so confused.

  330. There are many that think

  331. he was a good man.

  332. He was a good moral teacher.

  333. Many think he was maybe

  334. a mythical figure.

  335. Some people think he's

  336. on the equivalent

  337. of a fairy tale.

  338. That's the second group.

  339. The brothers are the first group.

  340. The Jews are the second group.

  341. But then there's a third group.

  342. And group is not really

  343. the right word.

  344. Category would be better.

  345. It's a category

  346. which the other two groups

  347. in John 7 belong to.

  348. Which all groups

  349. of human beings belong to.

  350. And that is the category

  351. of the world,

  352. verse 7.

  353. The brothers' opposition

  354. was cynical.

  355. If the Jews' opposition

  356. to Jesus was confused,

  357. Jesus teaches us

  358. that the world's opposition

  359. to him is marked

  360. by hatred.

  361. That's what Jesus says.

  362. If you look at verse 7,

  363. it's so stark.

  364. The world hates me.

  365. It's very simple

  366. and yet very profound.

  367. The world hates me.

  368. You've probably understood

  369. if you've been here

  370. over the duration

  371. of our studies in John

  372. that the word world

  373. is a very important word

  374. in John's Gospel.

  375. It's a very important category

  376. for John.

  377. He uses it many,

  378. many times

  379. and it means for him

  380. not just,

  381. not the physical globe,

  382. but it means humanity

  383. in opposition to God.

  384. So right at the beginning

  385. of the Gospel,

  386. he's mentioned the world,

  387. isn't it?

  388. Chapter 1, verse 10.

  389. John saying this,

  390. he was in the world

  391. and though the world

  392. was made through him,

  393. the world did not

  394. recognise him.

  395. The world did not

  396. recognise Jesus.

  397. A few weeks ago,

  398. I went to the rugby

  399. and I met someone

  400. who I didn't have a clue

  401. who they were

  402. and they knew me

  403. and I didn't have a clue

  404. who they were.

  405. They said,

  406. you know me

  407. and I looked at them

  408. and I thought,

  409. I don't know him

  410. and I didn't know

  411. who they were

  412. until they revealed themselves.

  413. 25 years have passed.

  414. I obviously hadn't changed a bit.

  415. But I didn't recognise them.

  416. I didn't recognise them

  417. until they revealed themselves.

  418. But human beings

  419. have got no excuse

  420. for not recognising

  421. our maker

  422. in Jesus.

  423. And there'll be certainly

  424. no excuse on that day

  425. when we meet him

  426. on that judgement day.

  427. The world does not

  428. recognise Jesus.

  429. That's what John

  430. is saying in chapter 1.

  431. But in chapter 7

  432. he says something

  433. more serious, doesn't he?

  434. He says,

  435. the world hates me.

  436. And perhaps you're saying,

  437. well, is that really the case?

  438. You might think,

  439. well, it's the case

  440. in a place

  441. where militant Islam

  442. rules and reigns.

  443. maybe northern Nigeria,

  444. Pakistan,

  445. certain parts of Iran.

  446. Maybe you've read

  447. about the hatred

  448. in parts of the world

  449. for Christians

  450. and for the Lord Jesus Christ.

  451. And we know,

  452. don't we,

  453. that there is much hatred

  454. for Jesus

  455. in many parts of the world.

  456. But what about

  457. in our part?

  458. What about in our hearts?

  459. Can that be so?

  460. Well, it does seem to be

  461. the Bible's teaching,

  462. isn't it?

  463. In that very first sermon

  464. in Acts,

  465. in Acts chapter 2

    Acts 2 chapter mention

  466. on the day of Pentecost.

  467. Do you remember

  468. how Peter finished it?

  469. He had this great appeal

  470. to the people

  471. and he said to the people,

  472. repent and be baptized

  473. every one of you

  474. in the name of Jesus Christ

  475. for the forgiveness of sins.

  476. And then the text

  477. goes on to say this,

  478. Peter warned them

  479. by many, many words

  480. and he pleaded with them,

  481. save yourself

  482. from this wicked generation.

  483. And that wicked generation,

  484. we are meant to see

  485. that that applies

  486. throughout every period of history.

  487. Right down to today.

  488. The world hates Jesus.

  489. And every human heart

  490. is ultimately resistant to Jesus.

  491. There are different ways

  492. of expressing it, aren't there?

  493. And so you can just,

  494. you can display that

  495. by apathy.

  496. But apathy is not the problem.

  497. We often think it is

  498. that people don't care.

  499. But apathy is not the problem

  500. according to the Bible.

  501. Antagonism is.

  502. And people express

  503. that antagonism

  504. according to their

  505. different personalities,

  506. depending on their upbringing,

  507. depending on their education,

  508. depending on their different abilities

  509. to express themselves.

  510. So people can be really

  511. courteous, can't they?

  512. They can be polite.

  513. They can even be flattering.

  514. But they still hate Jesus.

  515. Why does the world hate Jesus?

  516. Jesus gives us the reason.

  517. Look at verse 7.

  518. The world cannot hate you,

  519. but it hates me.

  520. And here's the key,

  521. because I testify

  522. about it,

  523. that its works are evil.

  524. So when Jesus begins

  525. to expose us,

  526. feathers start to be rustled

  527. and feathers start to fly.

  528. There's an example of that

  529. in verses 14 to 20.

  530. Do you see what's being said there?

  531. What is it that changed

  532. the interested observers

  533. from verse 15

  534. to violent opponents

  535. in verse 20?

  536. And the answer has to be,

  537. Jesus said to them,

  538. verse 19,

  539. has not Moses given you the law

  540. in the Old Testament?

  541. Yet not one of you

  542. keeps the law.

  543. Merely exposing their hypocrisy

  544. and duplicity

  545. and sinfulness.

  546. And then he goes further on

  547. asking,

  548. why are you trying to kill me?

  549. And the crowd

  550. protests.

  551. They say,

  552. you're demon possessed.

  553. They go mad at that.

  554. We're not trying to kill you,

  555. but they were.

  556. And Jesus is right

  557. and he's proved right

  558. in time

  559. and given half a chance

  560. the world would murder

  561. its maker all over again.

  562. Because the world hates Jesus

  563. because he testifies,

  564. he shows

  565. that what it does is evil.

  566. Second example is

  567. in verses 21 to 24

  568. and it's a rather complicated section

  569. but there's a basic simplicity to it.

  570. Some of the Jews

  571. were quite happily

  572. circumcising their children

  573. on the Sabbath day.

  574. Though strictly speaking

  575. it was against their laws

  576. to do that on the Sabbath.

  577. And they got absolutely

  578. mad with Jesus.

  579. Do you remember

  580. when he healed

  581. the whole body of a man

  582. who'd been lying

  583. by the side of a pool

  584. for 38 years?

  585. They went mad at him

  586. for doing that

  587. because he'd done it

  588. on the Sabbath.

  589. Even though Jesus

  590. was fulfilling

  591. his father's intention

  592. in the giving

  593. of the Sabbath.

  594. And when Jesus

  595. exposes their hypocrisy again,

  596. then their hatred

  597. is rekindled.

  598. They see their hypocrisy.

  599. Is not this the man

  600. whom they seek to kill,

  601. they say?

  602. The world hates Jesus

  603. because Jesus testifies

  604. against its evil.

  605. evil.

  606. And I mustn't use

  607. the impersonal there.

  608. Our evil.

  609. Even when we become

  610. believers in the Lord Jesus,

  611. and those of us

  612. who are Christians

  613. here tonight,

  614. we will,

  615. we're aware,

  616. aren't we,

  617. there's a remnant

  618. of opposition

  619. that exists

  620. in our nature

  621. towards the Lord Jesus

  622. and his absolute claims

  623. on our lives.

  624. maybe you've been

  625. a Christian for years,

  626. but you're aware

  627. that there's a rebellion

  628. that exists inside you.

  629. There's a resistance

  630. many times

  631. that takes place

  632. within us.

  633. And so if we're honest

  634. tonight,

  635. when we are aware

  636. that, aren't we,

  637. that when things go wrong

  638. and disappointments occur,

  639. our knee-jerk reaction

  640. indicates

  641. that very often

  642. we become resentful

  643. of God's plan

  644. or we start to blame him

  645. or we start to express

  646. doubt or disappointment

  647. or even anger

  648. towards him.

  649. When our pride rebels

  650. and the kind of

  651. defence mechanism

  652. kicks in,

  653. that takes place

  654. within us.

  655. And all kinds

  656. of rationalisations

  657. take place.

  658. When Jesus puts

  659. his finger on something

  660. in my life

  661. and on

  662. in your life,

  663. we can often

  664. rile up,

  665. can't we?

  666. I don't know

  667. what it's like

  668. in your house.

  669. If I say someone

  670. in your house

  671. says to you,

  672. you're always

  673. on your phone.

  674. What's your first reaction?

  675. Well,

  676. this happened

  677. in our house

  678. last night.

  679. So I'll tell you

  680. what my first reaction was.

  681. You're on your phone

  682. all the time.

  683. You're on the phone

  684. more than me.

  685. That's immediate.

  686. What happens,

  687. isn't it?

  688. We know this

  689. and as Jesus

  690. puts his finger

  691. on something

  692. in our lives,

  693. we know our gut reaction,

  694. even those of us

  695. who are believers,

  696. it's often

  697. to really kick

  698. against it.

  699. And it's so important

  700. tonight for us

  701. to come clean

  702. about this

  703. and to admit that.

  704. We will never,

  705. we're never going

  706. to develop,

  707. we're never going

  708. to mature

  709. if we don't admit that.

  710. It struck me this week,

  711. I read an interview

  712. with a man called

  713. Fergal Keane,

  714. he's an Irish journalist

  715. and a BBC correspondent.

  716. I've not read

  717. his memoirs.

  718. They sound brilliant.

  719. He had a wild upbringing.

  720. But in the interview

  721. I read,

  722. he comes clean

  723. and he tells

  724. the readership

  725. about the kind

  726. of guy

  727. he is like.

  728. He said

  729. he'd been covering it up

  730. for years

  731. with various masks

  732. and then he says

  733. this about himself.

  734. He says

  735. in personal relationships

  736. I was a taker.

  737. I was dependent,

  738. needy,

  739. manipulative

  740. and quick to use

  741. the pain of my past

  742. as an alibi

  743. for selfishness.

  744. Poor me.

  745. If you had had

  746. the childhood I had

  747. you would be the same.

  748. Those who were closest

  749. to me saw a man

  750. who retreated

  751. into silence

  752. when he was challenged

  753. who could not

  754. communicate feelings.

  755. A man with

  756. the self-obsession

  757. and compulsiveness

  758. of a truly

  759. driven man

  760. a man running.

  761. It's a remarkable

  762. admission isn't it?

  763. There's hope

  764. for a man

  765. or a woman

  766. or a boy

  767. or a girl

  768. who comes clean

  769. tonight

  770. because Jesus

  771. can remake us

  772. when we say

  773. yes

  774. Lord you've put

  775. your finger

  776. on it.

  777. I might have

  778. been mad about it

  779. Jesus

  780. but I

  781. capitulate

  782. I agree

  783. or you can be

  784. like the world

  785. the world hates

  786. Jesus

  787. because Jesus

  788. testifies to

  789. its evil.

  790. It puts a whole

  791. new light

  792. doesn't it

  793. on the most

  794. famous verse

  795. in the Bible

  796. John 3

  797. 16

  798. for God

  799. so loved

  800. the world

  801. that's actually

  802. meaningless jargon

  803. to most people.

  804. Jesus loves

  805. yeah yeah

  806. meaningless jargon

  807. until you actually

  808. understand that

  809. the God

  810. the world

  811. God's love

  812. is a world

  813. that hates

  814. God

  815. and once

  816. we discover

  817. that

  818. it makes

  819. the good news

  820. of Christianity

  821. absolutely wonderful

  822. I can't finish

  823. there

  824. because John

  825. is giving

  826. this gospel

  827. to present

  828. the world

  829. saviour

  830. and so in

  831. John 7

  832. we find some

  833. marvellous

  834. teaching on

  835. the planned

  836. salvation of

  837. the world

  838. look in

  839. verse 6

  840. the right

  841. time

  842. for me

  843. Jesus says

  844. has not yet

  845. come

  846. the word

  847. used there

  848. is this

  849. phrase

  850. a point

  851. in time

  852. might simply

  853. be a reference

  854. to the feast

  855. of tabernacle

  856. as in verse 8

  857. I'm not going

  858. up to this

  859. feast for my

  860. time has not

  861. yet fully

  862. come

  863. in other words

  864. Jesus is saying

  865. there's a timing

  866. in everything

  867. to do with

  868. salvation

  869. and it's not

  870. the right time

  871. for me to go

  872. up to the

  873. feast with the

  874. brothers

  875. very likely

  876. if he'd have

  877. gone up

  878. there would

  879. have been

  880. some kind

  881. of palm

  882. sunday

  883. scene

  884. and that

  885. wasn't the

  886. father's

  887. plan

  888. at this

  889. particular

  890. time

  891. it's a

  892. wonderful

  893. reminder

  894. of how

  895. precise

  896. and how

  897. exact

  898. and how

  899. minute

  900. God's

  901. timing

  902. is

  903. in the

  904. unfolding

  905. of salvation

  906. and in the

  907. lives of

  908. his people

  909. it's a

  910. wonderful

  911. truth

  912. isn't it

  913. that God's

  914. perfect timing

  915. in our lives

  916. is so exact

  917. so accurate

  918. so precise

  919. but the word

  920. can mean

  921. a point in

  922. time

  923. it can also

  924. mean

  925. significant

  926. time

  927. and if

  928. that

  929. is the

  930. case

  931. that

  932. gives us

  933. an

  934. understanding

  935. of this

  936. huge

  937. gulf

  938. in verse

  939. 6

  940. in the

  941. reference

  942. to

  943. Jesus

  944. in the

  945. reference

  946. to his

  947. brothers

  948. verse 6

  949. my time

  950. has not

  951. yet come

  952. but your

  953. time is

  954. always

  955. here

  956. and what

  957. he means

  958. by that

  959. is you

  960. brothers

  961. at this

  962. particular

  963. stage

  964. what you're

  965. doing is

  966. completely

  967. insignificant

  968. to God

  969. as far as

  970. salvation

  971. is concerned

  972. God

  973. it's a

  974. really strong

  975. thing

  976. Jesus

  977. saying

  978. a really

  979. stark

  980. truth

  981. for the

  982. unbeliever

  983. who sets

  984. his life

  985. in opposition

  986. to God

  987. by going

  988. his own

  989. way

  990. the living

  991. of his

  992. life is

  993. absolutely

  994. completely

  995. and utterly

  996. insignificant

  997. in the eyes

  998. of God

  999. as far as

  1000. salvation is

  1001. concerned

  1002. but with

  1003. Jesus Christ

  1004. the timing

  1005. and the plan

  1006. is everything

  1007. there's

  1008. the utmost

  1009. significance

  1010. in what

  1011. Jesus

  1012. has come

  1013. to do

  1014. as

  1015. saviour

  1016. there was

  1017. a right

  1018. place

  1019. and a

  1020. right

  1021. time

  1022. for

  1023. Jesus

  1024. to give

  1025. up

  1026. his

  1027. life

  1028. to pay

  1029. the penalty

  1030. for our

  1031. sins

  1032. and to pay

  1033. the price

  1034. for our

  1035. salvation

  1036. and yet

  1037. it wasn't

  1038. yet

  1039. Jesus

  1040. says

  1041. my time

  1042. has not

  1043. yet come

  1044. and you

  1045. know

  1046. over and

  1047. over again

  1048. in John's

  1049. gospel

  1050. certainly

  1051. right up

  1052. through the

  1053. first half

  1054. you find

  1055. this same

  1056. idea

  1057. repeated

  1058. chapter 2

  1059. verse 4

  1060. different

  1061. words

  1062. but same

  1063. idea

  1064. at the

  1065. wedding

  1066. of

  1067. Canaan

  1068. and Galilee

  1069. my time

  1070. has not

  1071. yet

  1072. come

  1073. chapter 7

  1074. verse 30

  1075. it says

  1076. they could

  1077. not seize

  1078. him because

  1079. his time

  1080. had not

  1081. yet come

  1082. chapter 8

  1083. verse 20

  1084. almost exactly

  1085. the same

  1086. thing

  1087. they couldn't

  1088. lay hold

  1089. of him

  1090. because

  1091. his time

  1092. had not

  1093. yet come

  1094. all the

  1095. way through

  1096. this chapter

  1097. Jesus

  1098. saying

  1099. my time

  1100. has not

  1101. yet

  1102. come

  1103. not yet

  1104. not yet

  1105. and then

  1106. you reach

  1107. chapter 12

  1108. verse 23

  1109. and he

  1110. says

  1111. now the

  1112. time has

  1113. come

  1114. for the

  1115. son of

  1116. god

  1117. to be

  1118. glorified

  1119. and you

  1120. ask

  1121. what time

  1122. and the

  1123. time is

  1124. holy week

  1125. he'd come

  1126. to the

  1127. shadow

  1128. of the

  1129. cross

  1130. he's come

  1131. to within a

  1132. stone's throw

  1133. of calvary

  1134. and Jesus

  1135. was not

  1136. killed

  1137. he gave

  1138. up his

  1139. life

  1140. to pay

  1141. the price

  1142. for our

  1143. salvation

  1144. and so

  1145. john

    John 7 chapter mention

  1146. chapter 7

  1147. is pointing

  1148. you

  1149. ultimately

  1150. to the

  1151. cross

  1152. and the

  1153. right

  1154. place

  1155. and the

  1156. right

  1157. time

  1158. where

  1159. jesus

  1160. would lay

  1161. down

  1162. his

  1163. life

  1164. to be

  1165. our

  1166. saviour

  1167. and so

  1168. you can

  1169. take the

  1170. content of

  1171. john

    John 7 chapter mention

  1172. chapter 7

  1173. and actually

  1174. understand

  1175. the cross

  1176. in the

  1177. light of

  1178. what happens

  1179. in john

    John 7 chapter mention

  1180. chapter 7

  1181. and ultimately

  1182. when the

  1183. time came

  1184. all the

  1185. hatred of

  1186. the world

  1187. was poured

  1188. onto the

  1189. lord jesus

  1190. christ

  1191. were you

  1192. there when

  1193. they crucified

  1194. my lord

  1195. all our

  1196. insults

  1197. all our

  1198. curses

  1199. all our

  1200. blasphemies

  1201. were put

  1202. onto him

  1203. all my

  1204. sins of

  1205. every kind

  1206. all the

  1207. thoughts that

  1208. stain my

  1209. mind

  1210. all the

  1211. evil i

  1212. designed

  1213. laid on

  1214. him

  1215. all the

  1216. ways my

  1217. feet have

  1218. strayed

  1219. all the

  1220. idols i

  1221. have made

  1222. all the

  1223. times i

  1224. have not

  1225. prayed

  1226. laid on

  1227. him

  1228. all the

  1229. told and

  1230. acted lies

  1231. all the

  1232. success and

  1233. all the

  1234. tries

  1235. sins that

  1236. i legitimize

  1237. laid on

  1238. him

  1239. all that

  1240. sinks me

  1241. in the

  1242. mire

  1243. all the

  1244. times of

  1245. base

  1246. desire

  1247. all that

  1248. needs a

  1249. cleansing

  1250. fire

  1251. laid on

  1252. him

  1253. all my

  1254. misdirected

  1255. powers

  1256. all my

  1257. many wasted

  1258. hours

  1259. all my

  1260. dreams of

  1261. ivory towers

  1262. laid on

  1263. him

  1264. john chapter

    John 7 chapter mention

  1265. 7 says that

  1266. jesus testifies

  1267. against the

  1268. evil

  1269. but at the

  1270. cross

  1271. jesus christ

  1272. took the

  1273. evil upon

  1274. himself

  1275. he took

  1276. the hatred

  1277. and he

  1278. bore it

  1279. on his

  1280. own body

  1281. on the

  1282. tree

  1283. as though

  1284. he had

  1285. done it

  1286. he never

  1287. spoke back

  1288. on the

  1289. cross

  1290. as a

  1291. sheep

  1292. before

  1293. her

  1294. shearers

  1295. is

  1296. silent

  1297. so he

  1298. opened

  1299. not his

  1300. mouth

  1301. but he

  1302. bore it

  1303. meekly

  1304. and lovingly

  1305. the hatred

  1306. the evil

  1307. alas

  1308. and did

  1309. my

  1310. saviour

  1311. bleed

  1312. and did

  1313. my

  1314. sovereign

  1315. die

  1316. did he

  1317. devote a

  1318. sacred

  1319. head

  1320. for such

  1321. a worm

  1322. as I

  1323. was it

  1324. for crimes

  1325. that I

  1326. had done

  1327. he died

  1328. upon the

  1329. tree

  1330. amazing

  1331. pity

  1332. grace

  1333. unknown

  1334. and love

  1335. beyond

  1336. degree

  1337. and if

  1338. tonight

  1339. you will

  1340. accept

  1341. him

  1342. if

  1343. tonight

  1344. you will

  1345. capitulate

  1346. and take

  1347. him

  1348. Jesus

  1349. will be

  1350. your

  1351. saviour

  1352. and you

  1353. say to

  1354. me

  1355. how can

  1356. I

  1357. accept

  1358. him

  1359. I'm

  1360. not sure

  1361. how to

  1362. do that

  1363. where can

  1364. I start

  1365. and the

  1366. answer is

  1367. given in

  1368. verse 17

  1369. where Jesus

  1370. gives a

  1371. universal

  1372. principle

  1373. we'll finish

  1374. with this

  1375. it's not

  1376. just to

  1377. the Jews

  1378. it's to

  1379. anyone in

  1380. the world

  1381. anyone of

  1382. us

  1383. tonight

  1384. verse

  1385. 17

  1386. if

  1387. anyone

  1388. if

  1389. anyone's

  1390. will

  1391. if

  1392. anyone

  1393. chooses

  1394. to do

  1395. God's

  1396. will

  1397. he will

  1398. know

  1399. whether

  1400. the

  1401. teaching

  1402. is from

  1403. God

  1404. or whether

  1405. I'm

  1406. speaking

  1407. my own

  1408. authority

  1409. the

  1410. principle

  1411. is really

  1412. simple

  1413. let me

  1414. explain it

  1415. to you

  1416. if we

  1417. are

  1418. willing

  1419. to do

  1420. what

  1421. God

  1422. says

  1423. we

  1424. will

  1425. find

  1426. out

  1427. that

  1428. Jesus

  1429. is

  1430. our

  1431. saviour

  1432. and

  1433. tonight

  1434. you may

  1435. not

  1436. understand

  1437. 95%

  1438. of what

  1439. God

  1440. says

  1441. but

  1442. don't

  1443. start

  1444. there

  1445. you

  1446. start

  1447. with

  1448. the

  1449. 5%

  1450. that

  1451. you

  1452. know

  1453. that

  1454. God

  1455. is

  1456. saying

  1457. and

  1458. you

  1459. obey

  1460. that

  1461. and

  1462. there

  1463. may

  1464. be

  1465. only

  1466. one

  1467. thing

  1468. tonight

  1469. that

  1470. you've

  1471. understood

  1472. from

  1473. the

  1474. sermon

  1475. well

  1476. will

  1477. you

  1478. do

  1479. that

  1480. and

  1481. you

  1482. keep

  1483. on

  1484. doing

  1485. the

  1486. things

  1487. that

  1488. you

  1489. do

  1490. here

  1491. and

  1492. understand

  1493. and

  1494. as

  1495. you

  1496. do

  1497. it

  1498. you

  1499. find

  1500. out

  1501. that

  1502. Jesus

  1503. is

  1504. your

  1505. saviour

  1506. being

  1507. willing

  1508. to do

  1509. what

  1510. God

  1511. says

  1512. and

  1513. God's

  1514. great

  1515. commandment

  1516. is this

  1517. the

  1518. supreme

  1519. commandment

  1520. which

  1521. John

  1522. the

  1523. gospel

  1524. writer

  1525. expresses

  1526. in

  1527. his

  1528. epistle

  1529. in

  1530. chapter

  1531. 3

  1532. and

  1533. verse

  1534. 23

  1535. he

  1536. says

  1537. this

  1538. is

  1539. the

  1540. command

  1541. of

  1542. God

  1543. what

  1544. is

  1545. the

  1546. great

  1547. command

  1548. of

  1549. God

  1550. that

  1551. you

  1552. believe

  1553. that

  1554. you

  1555. believe

  1556. in

  1557. the

  1558. name

  1559. of

  1560. his

  1561. son

  1562. Jesus

  1563. Christ

  1564. and

  1565. you

  1566. love

  1567. one

  1568. another

  1569. and

  1570. if

  1571. you've

  1572. understood

  1573. anything

  1574. tonight

  1575. of

  1576. Jesus

  1577. Christ

  1578. the

  1579. saviour

  1580. of

  1581. the

  1582. world

  1583. and

  1584. his

  1585. death

  1586. on

  1587. the

  1588. cross

  1589. for

  1590. our

  1591. sake

  1592. bearing

  1593. our

  1594. sin

  1595. and

  1596. our

  1597. hatred

  1598. if

  1599. you

  1600. understood

  1601. anything

  1602. of

  1603. that

  1604. and

  1605. you

  1606. see

  1607. him

  1608. as

  1609. the

  1610. available

  1611. risen

  1612. saviour

  1613. who's

  1614. alive

  1615. here's

  1616. the

  1617. command

  1618. place

  1619. your

  1620. trust

  1621. in

  1622. him

  1623. give

  1624. your

  1625. heart

  1626. to

  1627. him

  1628. surrender

  1629. your

  1630. life

  1631. to him

  1632. and

  1633. you

  1634. might

  1635. not

  1636. understand

  1637. much

  1638. more

  1639. than

  1640. that

  1641. but

  1642. you

  1643. can

  1644. understand

  1645. this

  1646. can't

  1647. you

  1648. believe

  1649. trust

  1650. believe

  1651. in the

  1652. Lord

  1653. Jesus

  1654. Christ

  1655. and

  1656. you

  1657. will

  1658. be

  1659. saved

  1660. take

  1661. that

  1662. command

  1663. and

  1664. do

  1665. it

  1666. and

  1667. for

  1668. those

  1669. of

  1670. us

  1671. who

  1672. are

  1673. Christians

  1674. for

  1675. many

  1676. of

  1677. us

  1678. the

  1679. principle

  1680. still

  1681. applies

  1682. doesn't

  1683. it

  1684. are

  1685. you

  1686. willing

  1687. to

  1688. do

  1689. what

  1690. God

  1691. says

  1692. day

  1693. by

  1694. day

  1695. as

  1696. we

  1697. hear

  1698. his

  1699. word

  1700. Sunday

  1701. by

  1702. Sunday

  1703. and

  1704. there'll

  1705. be

  1706. a lot

  1707. that

  1708. we

  1709. don't

  1710. grasp

  1711. and

  1712. a lot

  1713. that

  1714. we

  1715. don't

  1716. understand

  1717. but

  1718. there

  1719. are

  1720. some

  1721. things

  1722. we

  1723. know

  1724. and

  1725. are

  1726. we

  1727. willing

  1728. to

  1729. do

  1730. it

  1731. and

  1732. if

  1733. you're

  1734. not

  1735. willing

  1736. to

  1737. do

  1738. it

  1739. you

  1740. will

  1741. stay

  1742. in

  1743. the

  1744. same

  1745. spot

  1746. for

  1747. 30

  1748. years

  1749. willing

  1750. to

  1751. do

  1752. what

  1753. God

  1754. says

  1755. let's

  1756. pray
