  1. Turn to Acts chapter 6.

    Acts 6 chapter mention

  2. Now it's full Lord's Day, isn't it?

  3. It's a good Lord's Day.

  4. The church meeting that we're going to have

  5. straight after this.

  6. There is going to be, I think,

  7. Pilgrim's Progress,

  8. the video of that

  9. on the creche for children,

  10. just for children.

  11. You can't go in there as adults.

  12. But do stay.

  13. It'll be, I think,

  14. the encouragement for you to stay around.

  15. We'll have coffee and then

  16. gather back in here just for a short time.

  17. And then we've got the Hope Pregnancy Prayer

  18. at 5 o'clock.

  19. And the whole issue of abortion,

  20. how we need to ask the Lord to work,

  21. ask the Lord to make us effective in this ministry.

  22. Do come at 5 o'clock this evening.

  23. And there is an outline for this sermon.

  24. It's a really long passage.

  25. Interestingly, Stephen didn't need an outline.

  26. But I do.

  27. And so I hope that might help you.

  28. Reactions to sermons are funny things, aren't they?

  29. I've been preaching for a long time.

  30. There are a handful of occasions

  31. when I can remember people have responded angrily.

  32. There was one time I went to preach in a church in Twickenham.

  33. And I was supposed to be preaching on one passage.

  34. I got up, opened my Bible,

  35. and I had another sermon note.

  36. And so I thought,

  37. well, in for a penny,

  38. in for a pound,

  39. I'll preach that.

  40. And a man got up halfway through,

  41. stomped out,

  42. slammed the door,

  43. and shouted at the person on the door

  44. that I was getting at him.

  45. I didn't even know what I was preaching

  46. until about 30 seconds before I got up to preach.

  47. But he was very, very angry.

  48. I've never had anyone throw stones at me, though.

  49. Can you see the end of the reaction to Stephen's sermon?

  50. It's ferocious, isn't it?

  51. A sermon that creates fireworks.

  52. Why would a speaker address people so strongly and so accusingly?

  53. And would a preacher be that insensitive?

  54. Or is the preacher angry?

  55. Or does he want to be offensive?

  56. Have you heard those kind of preachers?

  57. Is he a proud man?

  58. Self-righteous?

  59. Or is it possible that he speaks like that

  60. because he wants the listeners

  61. to find something better than they've found?

  62. C.S. Lewis has got a famous quote.

  63. He says,

  64. People fool around with drink and sex and ambition

  65. while God is offering them infinite joy.

  66. People are like infinite children, Lewis says,

  67. making ignorant children,

  68. making mud pies

  69. because they cannot imagine a holiday by the sea.

  70. In other words, C.S. Lewis is telling us

  71. that people aim too low

  72. and somebody needs to come along

  73. and lift their gaze

  74. and religious people

  75. can aim too low.

  76. You may be the sort of person

  77. that's happy to be in a one-hour service

  78. in a nice building.

  79. You think,

  80. that'll do me.

  81. You've aimed too low.

  82. The history of the early churches,

  83. we've seen it in Acts,

  84. we've seen the Lord Jesus Christ

  85. being raised to his throne in heaven

  86. and building his church.

  87. And as he builds his church,

  88. opposition builds as well.

  89. And so today,

  90. we come to the first martyr

  91. in the history of the church

  92. whose name was Stephen,

  93. who was killed for his faith.

  94. You might think,

  95. sometimes people are in the wrong place

  96. at the wrong time

  97. and it can be fatal.

  98. Open Doors,

  99. the ministry organisation

  100. that works amongst the persecuted church,

  101. tells me that every two hours,

  102. somewhere in the world,

  103. a Christian is killed

  104. simply for believing in the Lord Jesus.

  105. Every two hours.

  106. So from your arrival,

  107. when you got here,

  108. to the time you leave

  109. after tea and coffee,

  110. somewhere in the world,

  111. somebody has been killed

  112. for just being a Christian.

  113. Stephen was stoned to death.

  114. And why was he killed?

  115. What did he say

  116. that made the crowd so angry?

  117. If you were here last week,

  118. you'll remember that Stephen

  119. was chosen to be a servant

  120. distributing food and goods

  121. in the church.

  122. He was obviously a remarkable man,

  123. a multi-talented man.

  124. There are five reminders

  125. in the book of Acts

  126. that he was a man

  127. full of the Holy Spirit

  128. and wisdom and power.

  129. And he's obviously doing

  130. a lot more than just administration.

  131. We're told chapter 6, verse 8,

  132. he was working miracles.

  133. Chapter 6, verse 10,

  134. he was preaching.

  135. And just as Jesus

  136. was strongly attacked

  137. for his miracles

  138. and his preaching,

  139. now Stephen

  140. is strongly attacked.

  141. We're told verse 9,

  142. people argued with him.

  143. Verse 11,

  144. they slandered him.

  145. It always happens, isn't it,

  146. when you're not winning

  147. the argument,

  148. if someone slanders you.

  149. And then in verse 12,

  150. they seize him,

  151. they take him to trial,

  152. and in verse 13,

  153. they tell lies about him.

  154. And so we're meant

  155. to read Acts 6 and 7

  156. and see the echo

  157. of the Lord Jesus.

  158. The same sort of stuff

  159. that landed on Jesus

  160. is now landing on Stephen.

  161. And because the religious people,

  162. they can feel

  163. their religious comfort blanket

  164. being taken away.

  165. They attack Stephen.

  166. I was once on a committee

  167. with an angry man.

  168. I didn't know

  169. he was an angry man

  170. when I went on the committee.

  171. But he didn't like

  172. to be crossed.

  173. He particularly

  174. didn't like to be blocked.

  175. They say, don't they,

  176. that anger is a blocked goal.

  177. Why is there anger

  178. in your home?

  179. I want to say

  180. it's because of a blocked goal.

  181. As on the committee,

  182. he would say

  183. something had to be done

  184. and somebody would

  185. contradict it

  186. or they'd even question it.

  187. Guy's face

  188. would become contorted.

  189. It looked like

  190. he was going to

  191. break into tears.

  192. But it was actually

  193. anger.

  194. His path

  195. was being blocked.

  196. And so it is

  197. with these people

  198. who are listening

  199. to Stephen.

  200. This fury

  201. rises up inside of them

  202. because they're

  203. being challenged.

  204. It's easy, isn't it,

  205. for us to be threatened

  206. when something precious

  207. is being taken away

  208. from us.

  209. But understand that

  210. sometimes the person

  211. is taking something

  212. away from us.

  213. They're taking a false

  214. God away from us.

  215. Something that we're

  216. trusting in,

  217. depending in,

  218. finding our identity

  219. that we shouldn't be

  220. trusting in.

  221. And therefore,

  222. when we're challenged,

  223. very often,

  224. it's a kindness,

  225. isn't it,

  226. of the person

  227. to challenge us?

  228. Or to take it away?

  229. And their security

  230. blanket here

  231. is being threatened

  232. by Stephen.

  233. Can you see

  234. what their security

  235. blanket was?

  236. Where was their comfort?

  237. Chapter 6,

  238. verse 13.

  239. The people trusted

  240. in the holy place,

  241. the temple,

  242. and the law

  243. was their great weapon.

  244. And Stephen,

  245. in his sermon,

  246. is dethroning

  247. the temple

  248. and dethroning

  249. the law.

  250. And he's saying

  251. Jesus Christ

  252. is on the throne.

  253. And the temple,

  254. it may point you

  255. to Jesus

  256. and the law

  257. may point you

  258. to Jesus,

  259. but you're not

  260. meant to worship

  261. the temple

  262. and you're not

  263. meant to be

  264. trusting the temple

  265. and you're not

  266. meant to be

  267. worshipping the law

  268. and you're not

  269. meant to be

  270. trusting the law.

  271. You are meant

  272. to be worshipping

  273. and trusting

  274. Jesus Christ.

  275. so these things

  276. the temple and the law

  277. they'd become like the rabbit's foot

  278. they'd become like a lucky charm to the people

  279. that's what they trusted in

  280. for you it probably isn't that

  281. but there will be things in your life

  282. which your identity is resting on

  283. which you're trusting in

  284. and as Thievin exposes that

  285. and shows them what it is

  286. they go on the attack

  287. there's two points you can see from the outline

  288. first God's word on what really matters

  289. and then God's word on what really lasts

  290. it's a speech

  291. Stephen is on trial

  292. and they're asking him

  293. whether the charges that have been brought against him are true

  294. and he begins to speak in chapter 7 verse 2

  295. let's look at that

  296. the speech has got four parts

  297. the first part is God's dealing with Abraham

  298. Father Abraham

  299. in verses 2 to 8

  300. Stephen obviously doesn't need to tell them who Abraham was

  301. they know he is

  302. but he is showing them that they've missed the obvious

  303. so in chapter 7 verse 3

  304. he reminds them that God met with Abraham

  305. God is the one who took the initiative

  306. and God is the one who told Abraham

  307. to go to the promised land

  308. and then look at chapter 7 verse 5

  309. Abraham never owned a scrap of the promised land

  310. and that's what Stephen wants these people to know

  311. he says to them

  312. you're so interested in the holy place

  313. but your father Abraham

  314. never owned one scrap of the promised land

  315. and of course Abraham didn't have the law either did he

  316. because the law came centuries later with Moses

  317. so Abraham had no land

  318. no law

  319. and Stephen wants the people to remember this

  320. he's saying to his listeners

  321. do you remember that

  322. do you realise that the founding father of the faith

  323. him who you look to

  324. had no holy place and no holy law

  325. but what did Abraham have?

  326. what did Abraham have from God

  327. verse 5?

  328. a promise

  329. God gave him a promise

  330. for the future

  331. that one day the land would belong to the people of God

  332. a promise

  333. and in chapter 7 verse 8

  334. God gave to Abraham

  335. a relationship

  336. a covenant

  337. I will be your God Abraham

  338. and you will be my people

  339. and you will belong to me forever

  340. I've noticed that when somebody is at the end of their life

  341. and they know that they're coming to the end of their life

  342. they often come to their senses

  343. what interests those who are coming to the end of their life

  344. and they know that they're coming to the end of their life?

  345. is it their possessions?

  346. is it their car?

  347. is it the office?

  348. is it the work on the house that needs doing?

  349. now when people come to the end of their life

  350. what are they interested in?

  351. how do they come to their senses?

  352. they are interested in

  353. relationships

  354. and the promise

  355. relationships and the promise

  356. that's what a dying person is interested in

  357. they've come to their senses

  358. they've realised what really matters in life

  359. it's the promises

  360. and the relationship

  361. they long for a promise

  362. that can get them through death

  363. they long

  364. and they rejoice

  365. in the relationships

  366. that they've had

  367. they have with the Lord

  368. and so what would you rather have?

  369. would you rather have the temple

  370. that can do nothing for you

  371. or the law

  372. which only convicts you

  373. or would you like to have

  374. the promise of God

  375. and a relationship with God?

  376. and Stephen is teaching his listeners

  377. that God gave Abraham

  378. what really matters

  379. and all the promises

  380. point to Jesus

  381. and the relationship

  382. that you can have with God

  383. comes through Jesus

  384. who takes away

  385. the barrier of our sin

  386. and he brings us

  387. into fellowship

  388. with God through the cross

  389. that's the first thing

  390. in the speech

  391. it's got to do with God

  392. and Abraham

  393. the second section

  394. has got to do with

  395. God and Moses

  396. not God and Moses

  397. God and Joseph

  398. remember Joseph

  399. in the technicolor coat

  400. there's no mention

  401. of the color coat

  402. in verses 9 to 19

  403. Stephen doesn't talk

  404. about the coat

  405. that's not important

  406. but what does he tell them?

  407. chapter 7 verse 9

  408. it's that Joseph

  409. landed in

  410. Egypt

  411. and he says the word

  412. Egypt

  413. six times

  414. he says

  415. don't you remember

  416. that Joseph

  417. your forefather

  418. went to Egypt

  419. Egypt

  420. Egypt

  421. Egypt

  422. Egypt

  423. Egypt

  424. not the promised land

  425. is it possible

  426. that God can do

  427. anything with his people

  428. if they're not

  429. in the promised land?

  430. yes of course

  431. we're told

  432. aren't we

  433. wonderfully

  434. chapter 7

  435. verse 9

  436. God was

  437. with

  438. Joseph

  439. it's a wonderful thing

  440. isn't it?

  441. a wonderful truth

  442. for you and I

  443. as the Lord's people

  444. this morning

  445. God was

  446. with his servant

  447. isn't that a precious thing?

  448. as you walk home

  449. as you get on the bus

  450. as you drive home

  451. as you face

  452. the rest of this week

  453. you can say

  454. having trusted in the Lord Jesus

  455. God

  456. with me

  457. and then we're told

  458. chapter 7

  459. verse 10

  460. that God rescued Joseph

  461. and God rescued him

  462. from prison

  463. and then God used him

  464. very wonderfully

  465. and God provided

  466. for Joseph

  467. and he provided

  468. for the family

  469. through the famine

  470. God looked after him

  471. but it was all

  472. where was it all?

  473. it was all in

  474. Egypt

  475. Egypt

  476. Egypt

  477. Egypt

  478. did Joseph live

  479. in the promised land?

  480. no

  481. did Joseph have the law?

  482. no

  483. are those things vital?

  484. they are not

  485. but God rescued him

  486. and provided for his family

  487. and that is what really

  488. matters

  489. that you would be rescued

  490. and that you would have

  491. a place in God's family

  492. I remember hearing

  493. a missionary

  494. going to Pakistan

  495. with a family

  496. he was interviewed

  497. and they asked the dad

  498. aren't you a little bit nervous

  499. about your children

  500. going to Pakistan?

  501. aren't you afraid

  502. for your children?

  503. and he said

  504. I remember being really surprised

  505. about this as a teenager

  506. he said

  507. I'd be more afraid

  508. to keep them here

  509. in the UK

  510. things are comfortable here

  511. and it's easy to forget

  512. the important things

  513. John Patton

  514. John Payton

  515. you children learn about him

  516. in Club 16

  517. don't you?

  518. and he went to the New Hebrides

  519. which is now called Vanuatu

  520. and John Payton

  521. was a missionary

  522. preparing to go

  523. to the New Hebrides

  524. Vanuatu

  525. and he was told

  526. by a member of the church

  527. as he was heading off

  528. to the New Hebrides

  529. where there were cannibals

  530. John Payton was told

  531. you will be eaten

  532. by cannibals

  533. my boy

  534. John Payton said

  535. to the man

  536. you sir

  537. are old

  538. and you will soon

  539. be eaten by worms

  540. and whether I'm eaten

  541. by cannibals

  542. or worms

  543. I don't mind

  544. because I will soon

  545. stand before my Redeemer

  546. and so will you

  547. that is the courage

  548. of a man

  549. who knows

  550. that he has

  551. actually given

  552. his life

  553. to the most important

  554. things

  555. and so what would

  556. you prefer?

  557. would you prefer

  558. to have a temple

  559. or the law

  560. or would you

  561. prefer to be able

  562. to say

  563. Christ has rescued

  564. me

  565. and Christ

  566. has provided

  567. for me

  568. and Christ

  569. will provide

  570. for me

  571. because that is

  572. what Joseph

  573. received from God

  574. he received

  575. rescue and provision

  576. on a small scale

  577. but the Lord Jesus

  578. he delivers

  579. and provides

  580. for us

  581. on a mighty

  582. a massive scale

  583. because

  584. he died

  585. for you

  586. and he rose

  587. again for you

  588. and he lives

  589. for you

  590. and so that's

  591. what Stephen

  592. says about Joseph

  593. now the third

  594. section is God

  595. dealing with Moses

  596. it's verses 17

  597. to 43

  598. it's a long

  599. section

  600. why does Stephen

  601. spend so long

  602. speaking about

  603. Moses

  604. well because

  605. if you look

  606. at chapter 6

  607. and verse 11

  608. he's been accused

  609. of speaking

  610. against Moses

  611. and what Stephen

  612. does is he tells

  613. his listeners

  614. and they don't

  615. need to be told

  616. again about the

  617. law on Mount Sinai

  618. they know about

  619. that Stephen

  620. reminds them

  621. in the end

  622. God owns

  623. the whole

  624. world

  625. now here's

  626. the question

  627. the question

  628. is this

  629. was Moses

  630. appreciated

  631. and Stephen

  632. says you know

  633. that people

  634. have brought

  635. the chapter

  636. of chapter 7

  637. verse 25

  638. he didn't

  639. have any

  640. interest

  641. in him

  642. you didn't

  643. recognize him

  644. you did not

  645. want him

  646. can you believe

  647. that

  648. God raised

  649. that Moses

  650. but the people

  651. didn't want him

  652. you can see

  653. where this is

  654. going

  655. can't you

  656. because God

  657. raised Jesus

  658. and these people

  659. in front of

  660. him

  661. very very

  662. religious

  663. but they

  664. didn't want

  665. him

  666. and Stephen

  667. reminded his

  668. listeners that

  669. the people

  670. of God

  671. disobeyed

  672. Moses

  673. yes they

  674. did

  675. they

  676. disobeyed

  677. they refused

  678. chapter 7

  679. verse 39

  680. they refused

  681. to obey

  682. him

  683. in fact

  684. they turned

  685. from what

  686. Moses had

  687. said

  688. to false

  689. gods

  690. they turned

  691. and made

  692. themselves

  693. a golden

  694. calf

  695. and they

  696. made a

  697. golden calf

  698. to worship

  699. and to put

  700. their trust

  701. in

  702. and you can

  703. see where

  704. this is

  705. going

  706. can't you

  707. because

  708. God's

  709. son

  710. the Lord

  711. Jesus

  712. was rejected

  713. and the

  714. people in

  715. front of

  716. Stephen

  717. have turned

  718. away from

  719. Jesus

  720. they don't

  721. want him

  722. and they've

  723. turned to

  724. the temple

  725. and the

  726. law

  727. false

  728. gods

  729. and so

  730. again

  731. were the

  732. temple

  733. and the

  734. law

  735. bad

  736. things

  737. no they

  738. weren't

  739. they were

  740. good

  741. things

  742. they were

  743. signposts

  744. to the

  745. Lord

  746. Jesus

  747. but they

  748. were not

  749. meant to be

  750. worshipped

  751. the

  752. temple

  753. and the

  754. law

  755. were not

  756. meant to

  757. be

  758. trusted

  759. in

  760. and so

  761. can you

  762. see where

  763. the speech

  764. is going

  765. follow the

  766. trajectory

  767. Moses

  768. has been

  769. sent by

  770. God

  771. greatly

  772. used

  773. by

  774. God

  775. but he

  776. was

  777. rejected

  778. by the

  779. people

  780. and

  781. disobeyed

  782. by the

  783. people

  784. and Moses

  785. spoke of

  786. Jesus

  787. chapter 7

  788. verse 37

  789. and Jesus

  790. has now

  791. been

  792. rejected

  793. and

  794. disobeyed

  795. and Stephen

  796. preaches

  797. what the

  798. Lord Jesus

  799. and Stephen

  800. as a preacher

  801. of the Lord

  802. Jesus is now

  803. being rejected

  804. himself

  805. and being

  806. disobeyed

  807. and there

  808. is hostility

  809. hostility to

  810. the Lord

  811. Jesus is

  812. ferocious

  813. and it's

  814. strange

  815. and ferocious

  816. you can

  817. lift the

  818. lid

  819. of what

  820. looks like

  821. boredom

  822. and underneath

  823. there's a

  824. serious

  825. dislike

  826. of Jesus

  827. find the

  828. person who

  829. just seems

  830. to be

  831. bored by

  832. the subject

  833. not really

  834. interested

  835. in the

  836. subject

  837. of the

  838. Lord

  839. Jesus

  840. and you

  841. probe a

  842. little

  843. deeper

  844. and you

  845. find that

  846. they are

  847. strongly

  848. opposed

  849. to

  850. Jesus

  851. I read

  852. this week

  853. about T.S.

  854. Eliot

  855. the poet

  856. I didn't

  857. know this

  858. but T.S.

  859. Eliot

  860. became

  861. Christian

  862. and it

  863. was a

  864. massive

  865. shock

  866. to his

  867. friends

  868. T.S.

  869. Eliot

  870. was a

  871. really

  872. bright

  873. man

  874. he wrote

  875. this

  876. he wrote

  877. that the

  878. majority

  879. of mankind

  880. is lazy

  881. minded

  882. in curious

  883. absorbed

  884. in vanities

  885. tepid in

  886. emotion

  887. and is

  888. therefore

  889. incapable

  890. of either

  891. much doubt

  892. or much

  893. faith

  894. T.S.

  895. Eliot

  896. became

  897. a

  898. Christian

  899. and

  900. his

  901. fellow

  902. writer

  903. Virginia

  904. Wolfe

  905. was so

  906. angry

  907. that he

  908. became

  909. a

  910. Christian

  911. she wrote

  912. to a

  913. friend

  914. she said

  915. a most

  916. shameful

  917. and distressing

  918. interview

  919. with Tom

  920. Eliot

  921. he has

  922. become a

  923. believer

  924. in God

  925. and immortality

  926. and goes

  927. to church

  928. a corpse

  929. would be

  930. more credible

  931. I mean

  932. there is

  933. something

  934. obscene

  935. that a

  936. living

  937. person

  938. sitting

  939. by the

  940. fire

  941. would

  942. believe

  943. in God

  944. that's

  945. fairly

  946. hostile

  947. isn't it

  948. but it's

  949. there

  950. and that

  951. is what

  952. Stephen

  953. is facing

  954. so in

  955. these three

  956. sections

  957. Stephen

  958. has talked

  959. about God

  960. dealing with

  961. Abraham

  962. with Joseph

  963. and dealing

  964. with Moses

  965. and so in

  966. this last

  967. section

  968. from verses

  969. 44 to

  970. 50

  971. he deals

  972. with God's

  973. special place

  974. and he

  975. says to the

  976. people

  977. God's special

  978. place in the

  979. Old Testament

  980. was originally

  981. a tent

  982. in the

  983. wilderness

  984. did you

  985. know that

  986. God said

  987. to his

  988. people

  989. I want

  990. you to

  991. have a

  992. tent

  993. because when

  994. you're

  995. travelling

  996. it will

  997. be a

  998. symbol

  999. of my

  1000. presence

  1001. with you

  1002. and as

  1003. you travel

  1004. and you

  1005. get to

  1006. a base

  1007. at night

  1008. set up

  1009. my

  1010. tent

  1011. it'll

  1012. be

  1013. there

  1014. as a

  1015. symbol

  1016. to tell

  1017. you I

  1018. am with

  1019. you

  1020. and when

  1021. you get

  1022. into the

  1023. promised land

  1024. the tent

  1025. is replaced

  1026. by the

  1027. temple

  1028. and the

  1029. temple was

  1030. built by

  1031. Solomon

  1032. but the

  1033. temple was

  1034. never meant

  1035. to box

  1036. God in

  1037. it was never

  1038. assumed that

  1039. the temple

  1040. no matter how

  1041. great and how

  1042. grand that

  1043. the temple

  1044. could somehow

  1045. hold God

  1046. in

  1047. could control

  1048. God

  1049. could box

  1050. God

  1051. even Solomon

  1052. when he

  1053. prayed at

  1054. the dedication

  1055. of the

  1056. temple

  1057. he says

  1058. God who

  1059. could hold

  1060. you in

  1061. you are

  1062. too great

  1063. and then

  1064. Jesus

  1065. comes

  1066. and in

  1067. John chapter

    John 1 chapter mention

  1068. 1 we are

  1069. told he

  1070. made his

  1071. tent

  1072. among us

  1073. the proof

  1074. that God

  1075. is interested

  1076. in this

  1077. world

  1078. the proof

  1079. that God

  1080. is interested

  1081. in you

  1082. this morning

  1083. is that

  1084. Jesus came

  1085. and made

  1086. his tent

  1087. among us

  1088. and Stephen's

  1089. listeners

  1090. rejected

  1091. Jesus

  1092. and they

  1093. replaced him

  1094. that is the

  1095. speech

  1096. and so

  1097. secondly

  1098. and briefly

  1099. God's word

  1100. on what

  1101. really lasts

  1102. verse 51

  1103. Stephen

  1104. turns to his

  1105. listeners

  1106. and he says

  1107. you are just

  1108. like the

  1109. Old Testament

  1110. evildoers

  1111. yes you

  1112. are

  1113. you killed

  1114. the prophets

  1115. you killed

  1116. the Messiah

  1117. you had

  1118. the law

  1119. said Stephen

  1120. but you

  1121. just disobeyed

  1122. it

  1123. and the

  1124. crowd

  1125. goes crazy

  1126. they block

  1127. their years

  1128. they start

  1129. screaming

  1130. they run

  1131. at him

  1132. they drag

  1133. him out

  1134. of the city

  1135. where have

  1136. you seen

  1137. that before

  1138. Jesus was

  1139. dragged

  1140. out of the

  1141. city

  1142. they stone

  1143. Stephen to

  1144. death

  1145. and how

  1146. interesting

  1147. it is

  1148. that as

  1149. Stephen is

  1150. dying

  1151. we're told

  1152. that he

  1153. looks up

  1154. to heaven

  1155. he's given

  1156. a vision

  1157. into heaven

  1158. and he

  1159. sees the

  1160. Lord Jesus

  1161. standing

  1162. it's the only

  1163. place in the

  1164. whole of the

  1165. New Testament

  1166. where we're told

  1167. that Jesus is

  1168. standing in heaven

  1169. always because

  1170. Jesus finished

  1171. his work

  1172. we're told that

  1173. the priest

  1174. sits down

  1175. and so

  1176. Jesus is

  1177. seated in

  1178. heaven

  1179. but in

  1180. act 7

  1181. he's standing

  1182. why is he

  1183. standing

  1184. surely

  1185. he's standing

  1186. because as

  1187. he sees

  1188. Stephen dying

  1189. he is dying

  1190. to welcome

  1191. him

  1192. he stands

  1193. to welcome

  1194. his saints

  1195. his martyred

  1196. saints

  1197. and Stephen

  1198. echoes Jesus

  1199. as he dies

  1200. he says

  1201. Jesus

  1202. receive my

  1203. spirit

  1204. that's exactly

  1205. what Jesus

  1206. said on the

  1207. cross

  1208. into your

  1209. hands

  1210. I commit

  1211. my spirit

  1212. and then he

  1213. says Lord

  1214. do not hold

  1215. this sin

  1216. against these

  1217. people

  1218. which is

  1219. exactly what

  1220. Jesus said

  1221. on the

  1222. cross

  1223. isn't it

  1224. and the

  1225. references

  1226. come from

  1227. Luke's

  1228. gospel

  1229. who also

  1230. wrote Acts

  1231. and so

  1232. volume 1

  1233. of the

  1234. gospel

  1235. and volume

  1236. 2

  1237. of the

  1238. book of

  1239. Acts

  1240. the people

  1241. the crowd

  1242. they're

  1243. full of

  1244. anger

  1245. and Stephen

  1246. is

  1247. full of

  1248. joy and

  1249. peace

  1250. and hope

  1251. these

  1252. people are

  1253. deeply

  1254. religious

  1255. but they

  1256. are deeply

  1257. opposed to

  1258. Jesus

  1259. is that

  1260. possible

  1261. is it

  1262. possible that

  1263. somebody could

  1264. come to

  1265. church week

  1266. by week

  1267. and be

  1268. deeply

  1269. opposed to

  1270. Jesus

  1271. of course

  1272. it is

  1273. and although

  1274. Stephen is

  1275. facing death

  1276. he's got more

  1277. life in him

  1278. than all the

  1279. crowd

  1280. he's got more

  1281. hope in him

  1282. more joy in

  1283. him

  1284. Spurgeon

  1285. says very

  1286. quaintly

  1287. on this

  1288. when a

  1289. person is

  1290. born

  1291. they cry

  1292. and the

  1293. people around

  1294. them smile

  1295. and when a

  1296. believer dies

  1297. says Spurgeon

  1298. the people

  1299. around may

  1300. cry

  1301. but the

  1302. believer

  1303. smiles

  1304. and here's

  1305. the point

  1306. Stephen is

  1307. exposing his

  1308. need the

  1309. things that

  1310. are really

  1311. going on

  1312. in the

  1313. people who

  1314. prefer

  1315. false gods

  1316. to the

  1317. real God

  1318. and he

  1319. gathers

  1320. the things

  1321. that really

  1322. matter for

  1323. those who

  1324. are drawn

  1325. to Christ

  1326. and this

  1327. is what

  1328. really matters

  1329. this morning

  1330. it is that

  1331. God would

  1332. call you

  1333. in the

  1334. gospel

  1335. and he

  1336. does

  1337. that he

  1338. would call

  1339. you to

  1340. follow him

  1341. and to

  1342. belong to

  1343. him

  1344. and to

  1345. be forgiven

  1346. and to

  1347. have eternal

  1348. life and

  1349. he does

  1350. that now

  1351. through the

  1352. preaching of

  1353. God's word

  1354. and so that

  1355. God's presence

  1356. would be with

  1357. you in

  1358. everything you

  1359. go through

  1360. in life

  1361. and in

  1362. death

  1363. and God

  1364. also gives

  1365. you his

  1366. promises

  1367. food to

  1368. live by

  1369. and that

  1370. he would be

  1371. your rescuer

  1372. all the way

  1373. through to the

  1374. end

  1375. and that

  1376. he would be

  1377. your protector

  1378. and these

  1379. are the

  1380. things we

  1381. find in

  1382. the Lord

  1383. Jesus

  1384. promise

  1385. and

  1386. relationship

  1387. that's what

  1388. really

  1389. matters

  1390. isn't it

  1391. and actually

  1392. nothing

  1393. else

  1394. ultimately

  1395. really matters

  1396. in the long

  1397. run

  1398. Jesus

  1399. offers you

  1400. promise

  1401. and

  1402. relationship

  1403. let's

  1404. pray

  1405. Thank you.
