  1. James 1, verse 27. That's where we're picking things up.

    James 1:27

  2. And we're tempted to think that when James tells his hearers to keep themselves unstained from the world,

  3. ! That he means, right, enough with the sex, drugs, and rock and roll.

  4. Stay away from the basement clubs in Soho.

  5. Nothing good happens after midnight.

  6. We saw last time, a couple of weeks ago, that he's talking about something else.

  7. What he's talking about is living as Christians according to the same values as the world around us.

  8. In 1.19 and following, James' concern was that in response to the persecution and the trials

  9. that this scattered group of believers are experiencing,

  10. that they would get drawn into a kind of revolutionary anger.

  11. The sort of thing that we see today.

  12. When people don't get what they want, when they're badly treated,

  13. they riot, and they fight,

  14. and they even burn cities to the ground.

  15. And it's all talked about as a kind of virtuous thing.

  16. It's one of the ways that a worldly culture responds to suffering, or indeed perceived suffering.

  17. Well, this morning, James continues on this thread.

  18. Only this time, the worldly value that he addresses,

  19. it's there in chapter 2, verse 1,

  20. is favoritism, partiality.

  21. My brothers, show no partiality as you hold the faith in our Lord Jesus Christ.

  22. The way to get things done in the world,

  23. the way that you get ahead,

  24. often the way that you get out of trouble,

  25. is by knowing rich and powerful people.

  26. And usually the two go together, rich and powerful.

  27. So if you can ingratiate yourself with a rich person, you can benefit.

  28. Start-up businesses, understand this.

  29. Start-up entrepreneurs network like mad,

  30. hoping that the rich guy will invest.

  31. Or that the influential person will use their product,

  32. and they can put it on their social media.

  33. Partiality is something that is considered a veritable positive thing

  34. in the world of start-up business.

  35. On a personal level,

  36. rich and powerful people can do things,

  37. and can get things,

  38. and can go places.

  39. And if they like having you around,

  40. well, you get favor by association.

  41. We treat rich people differently.

  42. We make time for them.

  43. We can clear our schedule for them.

  44. We give them attention.

  45. We laugh at their jokes,

  46. because we want to benefit in some way.

  47. And the reason that that kind of behavior is worldly

  48. is because it's actually a form of self-love.

  49. There's lots of talk in our culture today about the rich using people.

  50. That may be true.

  51. But plenty of people use the rich as well in order to get what they want.

  52. The point is that James says that there isn't to be any of this in the church.

  53. But it's really important, I think,

  54. that we see that James isn't referring here simply to financial wealth.

  55. Remember that these believers,

  56. to whom he writes,

  57. have come to faith in Christ from Judaism,

  58. and they have been scattered because they've been persecuted

  59. for naming the name of the Lord Jesus Christ

  60. and not bowing the knee to the Jewish system.

  61. So, when James gives this mini parable in verses 2 and 4,

  62. he has 2 to 4.

  63. He has a particular kind of rich person in mind.

  64. So, do you see, it's interesting the details that are mentioned.

  65. This person who comes into their gathering is wearing a signet ring,

  66. and he has fine clothing, verse 2.

  67. Those point to his authority.

  68. And we're told in verses 6 and 7

  69. that this rich person is actually an oppressor and a blasphemer.

  70. I think what we're supposed to see is

  71. that this isn't just a generic wealthy person.

  72. This man is some kind of leader from the Jewish establishment

  73. who has come to see them.

  74. So, what's happening is this beleaguered group thinks,

  75. well, if we can treat this guy well,

  76. with all of his authority, all of his influence,

  77. he might use that influence in order to help us.

  78. It's a bit like today,

  79. us trying to get favor from the local MP

  80. or even the prime minister.

  81. They come along on Sunday,

  82. and we make a fuss of them

  83. because, well, they might be able to help us.

  84. They might be able to assist us in our mission.

  85. So, you're unwelcome.

  86. Down at the door there,

  87. and two men arrive at the same time.

  88. One of them pulls up in a Range Rover

  89. with blacked-out windows,

  90. and you think he looks familiar,

  91. very well-dressed.

  92. You might have seen him on television.

  93. Hello, sir.

  94. Lovely to meet you.

  95. You're very, very welcome.

  96. Let me get you a seat.

  97. Come with me.

  98. Come this way.

  99. The other guy arrives.

  100. He looks a bit shabby.

  101. Morning.

  102. Very welcome.

  103. Wait there for a moment.

  104. Sorry.

  105. Just, if you don't actually,

  106. just grab a seat wherever.

  107. I think there's one over there somewhere.

  108. In fact, you know,

  109. maybe you just want to perch on the floor.

  110. That's all right.

  111. It can be a subtle kind of thing,

  112. but it's usually pretty obvious.

  113. The person with wealth and authority and power

  114. gets special treatment.

  115. It's the same self-love

  116. that marks the culture on display in the church.

  117. And James says it's worldly and it's ugly.

  118. Just like anger, actually,

  119. it doesn't bring about the righteousness of God.

  120. He's saying political manipulation,

  121. working the rich does not accomplish God's work.

  122. Indeed, when you do that,

  123. look at verse 4.

  124. He's saying,

  125. you make distinctions among yourselves

  126. and you become judges with evil thoughts.

  127. Literally, you divide yourselves.

  128. That problem sound familiar?

  129. We heard that right at the start of the letter

  130. in chapter 1, verse 8.

  131. Double-mindedness.

  132. Divided.

  133. One foot in the kingdom of God,

  134. one foot in the world.

  135. One foot in the kingdom of service

  136. one foot in the kingdom of equality.

  137. One foot in the kingdom of

  138. out for what I can get.

  139. Let's work the angles and see if we can get ahead.

  140. And James says,

  141. don't do it.

  142. And he goes on to provide two reasons

  143. why we're not to do it.

  144. Point number one,

  145. he says it's against God's design.

  146. To show partiality

  147. within the church

  148. is against God's design.

  149. Verse 5,

  150. Listen, my beloved brothers.

  151. Has not God chosen those

  152. who are poor in the world

  153. to be rich in faith

  154. and heirs of the kingdom,

  155. which he has promised to those who love him?

  156. But you have dishonored the poor man.

  157. A couple of weeks ago,

  158. we heard James tell the poor man

  159. to rejoice in his exaltation

  160. for this reason.

  161. In the economy of God,

  162. it is the poor whom he chooses.

  163. He goes to those that the world overlooks.

  164. He meets them in their need

  165. and he chooses them

  166. to be in his family.

  167. Now, James isn't saying,

  168. he's definitely not saying,

  169. as some theologians seem to want to say,

  170. that material poverty

  171. is a requirement for salvation.

  172. He can't be saying that.

  173. God doesn't choose the poor

  174. because they are poor.

  175. He's saying that what is required

  176. is humility,

  177. poverty of spirit.

  178. Remember, I said at the outset

  179. that this letter echo after echo

  180. after echo of the Sermon on the Mount.

  181. Who is blessed?

  182. Who finds favor with God?

  183. Who flourishes in God's eyes?

  184. The poor in spirit.

  185. And anyone who possesses

  186. that kind of poverty

  187. can be saved.

  188. Indeed, they will be saved.

  189. In practice, what that means, however,

  190. is that those who have

  191. very little materially

  192. are actually at a spiritual advantage.

  193. How is that the case?

  194. Well, if you have nothing else

  195. to hope in,

  196. you're very aware of your need

  197. and you're open

  198. to what Christ has to offer.

  199. That's why Luke,

  200. when he uses his beatitudes,

  201. he says in Luke chapter 6, verse 20,

    Luke 6:20

  202. blessed are the poor.

  203. If you have plenty of other things

  204. to trust in,

  205. money,

  206. contact,

  207. influence,

  208. then you look to those things

  209. to deliver the life

  210. that you want

  211. and what ends up happening

  212. is that you resist

  213. what God is doing in your life

  214. to grow you to maturity.

  215. When trials come,

  216. how many of us,

  217. the first thing we think

  218. is we can pay our way out of this,

  219. we can ring somebody

  220. who will help us

  221. to get our way out of this.

  222. If only I had

  223. that level of influence,

  224. if only I was that kind of person,

  225. well then I could fix this situation.

  226. That's the problem.

  227. If you have those things,

  228. you tend to trust in them.

  229. That is why Jesus says

  230. in the following verses

  231. in Luke chapter 6,

    Luke 6 chapter mention

  232. he starts,

  233. blessed are the poor,

  234. he goes through his beatitudes,

  235. and then he says,

  236. 624,

  237. woe to you who are rich

  238. for you have already

  239. received your comfort.

  240. If we have resources,

  241. we can fix things.

  242. Without those resources,

  243. when things come our way

  244. from God under His hand

  245. to cause us

  246. to have to lean on Him

  247. and have to grow,

  248. what ends up happening?

  249. We lean on Him and we grow

  250. and we're spiritually much healthier.

  251. Woe to you who are rich

  252. for you have already

  253. received your comfort.

  254. Hey, by the way,

  255. this is why God sends

  256. trials of various kinds

  257. to those who are truly His,

  258. trials that money

  259. and contacts and influence

  260. can't do anything to fix.

  261. God is intent on maturing us,

  262. on growing us up,

  263. whatever we have materially,

  264. whatever we have in terms

  265. of contacts and influence.

  266. And sometimes He will send

  267. things our way

  268. that whatever we have

  269. can't fix,

  270. like sickness,

  271. like problems with our children,

  272. like relational breakdown.

  273. Your money doesn't work.

  274. Your contacts are no help.

  275. Your influence delivers nothing.

  276. What's happening?

  277. God is forcing you back on Him

  278. so that you gain steadfastness,

  279. chapter 1, verse 3,

  280. so that you grow to maturity.

  281. Look, if wealth or comfort

  282. or privilege in this life

  283. causes you to miss out on Christ

  284. or to fail to grow up

  285. in the ways of Christ,

  286. whatever you have,

  287. it isn't worth the pleasure

  288. or confidence that it has provided.

  289. Whatever it was that you trusted in

  290. rather than Him,

  291. it wasn't worth it.

  292. So, to dishonor the poor

  293. is to push against God's design.

  294. He chooses the poor

  295. and the world to be rich in faith.

  296. And they are co-heirs

  297. with everyone else

  298. in God's kingdom.

  299. The ground at the foot

  300. of the cross of Christ

  301. is level.

  302. However we've got

  303. to the point of poverty of spirit,

  304. that doesn't matter.

  305. That is God's work.

  306. The ground at the foot

  307. of the cross is level.

  308. Just to say,

  309. many of us

  310. are rich,

  311. at least by global standards.

  312. But it may be

  313. that you feel relatively poor.

  314. You're not as rich

  315. as someone else.

  316. Well, if that's the case,

  317. let me say,

  318. look at verse 5.

  319. Let verse 5

  320. get into your bones.

  321. Listen, my beloved brothers,

  322. has God not chosen,

  323. has not God chosen

  324. those who are poor

  325. in the world

  326. to be rich in faith

  327. and heirs of the kingdom?

  328. Our world might despise

  329. poverty and weakness.

  330. God does not.

  331. Our culture might choose

  332. the strong and the impressive,

  333. but God doesn't.

  334. Your poverty is no barrier

  335. to knowing Christ,

  336. nor is it a barrier

  337. to receiving

  338. a heavenly inheritance

  339. that is worth

  340. more than any

  341. earthly inheritance.

  342. Even the biggest,

  343. the Gates children,

  344. the Musk children,

  345. the Bezos children,

  346. poor kids.

  347. they're all looking forward

  348. to a massive inheritance.

  349. It is nothing

  350. compared to this one.

  351. In Christ,

  352. you inherit God's kingdom.

  353. Don't show partiality

  354. because it is against

  355. God's design.

  356. James continues,

  357. it is also secondly

  358. against God's law.

  359. Verses 8 to 11,

  360. if you really fulfill

  361. the royal law,

  362. according to the Scripture,

  363. you shall love your neighbor

  364. as yourself,

  365. you are doing well.

  366. But if you show partiality,

  367. you are committing sin

  368. and are convicted

  369. by the law as transgressors.

  370. For whoever keeps

  371. the whole law

  372. but fails in one point

  373. has become guilty

  374. of all of it.

  375. For he who said,

  376. do not commit adultery,

  377. also said,

  378. do not murder.

  379. If you do not commit adultery

  380. but do murder,

  381. you have become

  382. a transgressor of the law.

  383. Now, James hasn't gone here

  384. on a theological tangent

  385. to talk about the law.

  386. Verse 9,

  387. partiality is still

  388. his concern.

  389. But he ties it here

  390. to God's law

  391. because it is such

  392. a prominent theme

  393. in the Old Testament.

  394. Exodus 23,

  395. Deuteronomy 1,

  396. Deuteronomy 10,

  397. Israel are commanded

  398. to act without partiality,

  399. to be impartial.

  400. And they're to do that

  401. because to do that

  402. is to mirror

  403. or to imitate God.

  404. And when we get further on,

  405. when we get to Jesus'

  406. summary of the law,

  407. impartiality lies

  408. behind what He says.

  409. You remember?

  410. The Old Testament law

  411. is summed up

  412. in two commands.

  413. Love God

  414. and love your neighbor.

  415. And it follows.

  416. It un...

  417. Whatever.

  418. There's no disconnection.

  419. It has to follow

  420. that you simply

  421. cannot love your neighbor

  422. if you discriminate

  423. against them.

  424. Just sit on the floor there.

  425. I'm going to talk

  426. to the rich guy.

  427. Partiality is a failure

  428. of neighbor love.

  429. It is very simple,

  430. but it is so important.

  431. James speaks to those

  432. because of its importance.

  433. He can't emphasize this enough.

  434. In fact, he says,

  435. listen, to those of you

  436. that want to wriggle out of this,

  437. I've got something to say.

  438. They say, okay, well,

  439. maybe do fall down

  440. on the partiality front.

  441. Maybe not great at that,

  442. but I'm good at the others.

  443. I'm pretty good at the others,

  444. most of them anyway.

  445. I'll take the test.

  446. I'm sure I'll do a solid

  447. seven out of ten

  448. on the Ten Commandments.

  449. He says, no.

  450. The law comes as a whole.

  451. You can't break it in one place

  452. and not destroy the whole thing.

  453. It's a bit like bursting a football.

  454. You can't burst a football

  455. and put a hole in one place

  456. and not ruin the whole thing.

  457. If you tried to say,

  458. but no, it's not ruined.

  459. There's only a tiny hole there.

  460. The hole's only in that part.

  461. It's nonsense.

  462. One place it breaks,

  463. the whole thing is useless.

  464. And if you start going,

  465. oh, no, there's only

  466. a tiny hole there,

  467. you miss the point.

  468. God's law requires us

  469. to love our poor neighbor.

  470. It's saying here,

  471. if you only have time

  472. for the rich,

  473. you're in sin.

  474. So, partiality is against

  475. God's design.

  476. It's against God's law.

  477. This is James' kind of one-two

  478. as to why favoritism

  479. has no place in the church.

  480. But I said at the beginning,

  481. it kind of comes naturally to us.

  482. We might know that favoritism

  483. is an ugly trait,

  484. but it just kind of happens.

  485. We gravitate towards rich

  486. and influential

  487. and powerful people

  488. if we can gain their favor.

  489. So, how do we change?

  490. How do we change?

  491. Well, I want to suggest

  492. that we focus ourselves.

  493. We lift our eyes.

  494. We focus our gaze.

  495. We turn our hearts

  496. to three realities

  497. that James mentions

  498. in the passage here,

  499. but he mentions them

  500. almost in passing.

  501. So, the first one

  502. is the fatherhood of God.

  503. Look at verse 27.

  504. Chapter 1, verse 27.

  505. Religion that is pure

  506. and undefiled before God

  507. is this,

  508. to visit orphans

  509. and widows

  510. in their affliction,

  511. to keep oneself unstained

  512. from the world.

  513. He doesn't say that.

  514. He doesn't say God.

  515. He says God the Father.

  516. The sort of religion

  517. that God the Father loves

  518. reflects God the Father's

  519. posture towards the world.

  520. He loves as a perfect father.

  521. It's terrible.

  522. It's a terrible home

  523. where fathers have favorite children.

  524. You see it in families

  525. where one child

  526. is particularly talented.

  527. They get all the time

  528. and attention.

  529. Why is that?

  530. In the hope that the child

  531. can make it in some way.

  532. Whatever area

  533. their talent lies,

  534. it's often couched

  535. in terms of,

  536. I just want to give them

  537. the best opportunities

  538. they can.

  539. But actually,

  540. it's usually much more

  541. about the parents

  542. because if your child

  543. becomes rich and famous,

  544. there's a good chance

  545. you will as well.

  546. Favoritism among children,

  547. favoritism among your children

  548. is really destructive.

  549. One of my children

  550. describes themselves

  551. as favorite child.

  552. They come to my office

  553. after school

  554. and they say,

  555. Hi, Dad,

  556. favorite child here

  557. and continue.

  558. Sometimes they even

  559. sign off their emails,

  560. Yours,

  561. favorite child.

  562. Now,

  563. their siblings

  564. find this annoying.

  565. So,

  566. we've had a few

  567. dinner table summits

  568. where I make it clear

  569. to them

  570. who my favorite

  571. really is.

  572. Obviously,

  573. I go around

  574. and tell them things

  575. that I value about all of them.

  576. They say,

  577. No, that's boring.

  578. Who's your favorite?

  579. I say,

  580. Well, of course,

  581. your mother's my favorite.

  582. Good fathers

  583. don't discriminate.

  584. And we don't love

  585. our children

  586. for what we can get

  587. from them.

  588. And we don't discriminate

  589. because

  590. that is an imitation

  591. of how God loves

  592. His children.

  593. As we've said,

  594. He loves those

  595. who have nothing

  596. to give

  597. in return.

  598. God loves those

  599. who know

  600. that their hands

  601. are empty.

  602. And to those

  603. who know that,

  604. He showers us

  605. with the love

  606. of a perfect

  607. Father.

  608. Whatever your experience

  609. of earthly fathers,

  610. and I know for some of us

  611. that's not great,

  612. say the least,

  613. but whether your experience

  614. is good or bad,

  615. when you come to God,

  616. you are received

  617. by a Father

  618. who loves you

  619. indiscriminately.

  620. In our sin,

  621. we're all the shabby guy.

  622. We're all the guy

  623. with nothing to offer.

  624. Spiritually speaking,

  625. you can have

  626. all the zeros

  627. in the world

  628. at the end

  629. of your bank account.

  630. Spiritually speaking,

  631. we're all the shabby guy.

  632. When it comes to God,

  633. that currency

  634. doesn't work.

  635. And yet,

  636. in our shabbiness,

  637. God doesn't wait

  638. for us to get cleaned up

  639. in order to accept us.

  640. You know that,

  641. don't you?

  642. God isn't waiting

  643. for you

  644. to clean up your life,

  645. to show yourself

  646. to be impressive,

  647. to be able to perform

  648. at a level

  649. that He can go,

  650. well, okay,

  651. I'll accept you.

  652. No.

  653. He doesn't wait

  654. for you to sort yourself out.

  655. He comes to you

  656. at your worst,

  657. and He says,

  658. my son

  659. shed His blood for you.

  660. Come and welcome.

  661. God doesn't overlook you.

  662. He loves you,

  663. and He welcomes you

  664. in the Lord Jesus.

  665. And here's the thing.

  666. It is to the degree

  667. that you know

  668. that love yourself,

  669. that you know it

  670. in your heart,

  671. not just up here,

  672. not just that you can

  673. answer the question,

  674. does God love me?

  675. Yes, God loves me

  676. because I put my faith

  677. in the Lord Jesus.

  678. It's that when you

  679. experience that

  680. in the depths

  681. of who you are,

  682. that you know

  683. that you've been

  684. welcomed into God's family,

  685. that you know

  686. that you are secure

  687. in His love

  688. despite your spiritual poverty.

  689. It is to the degree

  690. that you know that yourself

  691. that you won't look down

  692. on others.

  693. First reality

  694. we need to grasp

  695. is the fatherhood of God.

  696. The second

  697. is in verse 1,

  698. it is the glory of Christ.

  699. Again,

  700. James includes

  701. a detail almost in passing

  702. that is absolutely

  703. massively important.

  704. My brothers,

  705. show no partiality

  706. as you hold the faith

  707. in our Lord Jesus Christ.

  708. He could have gone on

  709. from there,

  710. but he adds,

  711. the Lord of glory.

  712. Why does he do that?

  713. Well,

  714. I think it's to remind us

  715. that there is only

  716. one truly glorious person.

  717. There is only one man

  718. who has walked

  719. the path of trials

  720. to maturity

  721. and to glory.

  722. Hebrews 5,

    Hebrews 5:8

  723. verses 8 and 9,

  724. although he was a son,

  725. he learned obedience

  726. through what he suffered

  727. and being made perfect,

  728. mature.

  729. He became the source

  730. of eternal salvation

  731. to all who obey him.

  732. That's the pattern.

  733. And it is this pattern

  734. holding to the faithfulness

  735. of Jesus

  736. that James exhorts us

  737. to imitate.

  738. We could summarize

  739. the letter to this point,

  740. I think,

  741. this way.

  742. Rejoice in your trials

  743. as Jesus rejoiced.

  744. Remain steadfast,

  745. persevere

  746. as he persevered,

  747. and be made mature

  748. as he was made mature.

  749. Part of our love

  750. of the rich

  751. is their glory,

  752. their power

  753. and their authority

  754. and their status,

  755. and that's what we're drawn to

  756. and that's what we want

  757. to share of.

  758. So, if we can just

  759. make them like us,

  760. we can just get

  761. rich adjacent.

  762. That would be the way

  763. it would be described,

  764. isn't it?

  765. If we can just get

  766. alongside them,

  767. we'll get caught up

  768. in that glory ourselves.

  769. We'll get to share

  770. some of that glory.

  771. Remember,

  772. having lunch

  773. with a wealthy friend

  774. a number of years ago

  775. and it was quite

  776. an experience.

  777. The people

  778. that waited

  779. on the table

  780. and the people

  781. that were also

  782. at the table,

  783. they treated me

  784. very differently

  785. because I was

  786. with the big guy.

  787. I was sharing

  788. in that glory.

  789. The problem is,

  790. it is when we

  791. desire that,

  792. when we pursue

  793. that and we

  794. want their favor

  795. in order to get it,

  796. it does terrible

  797. things to us.

  798. I don't mean

  799. even just the sinister

  800. things that people

  801. do for the praise

  802. of the rich.

  803. I mean,

  804. laughing at jokes

  805. that aren't funny.

  806. Yes, of course.

  807. Flattery.

  808. Denying your values

  809. in order just

  810. to keep them on side.

  811. Keeping your mouth

  812. shut when the big guy

  813. states his opinions

  814. about things

  815. that you think

  816. are nonsense.

  817. Why are we

  818. drawn to this?

  819. In the world,

  820. it's because

  821. of the glory hunger

  822. that exists

  823. in the human soul.

  824. We, all of us,

  825. are created

  826. for glory

  827. and there is this,

  828. as it were,

  829. this gap in the soul,

  830. this emptiness,

  831. this lack of glory

  832. and we're hungry

  833. for it.

  834. But what we do

  835. is we decide

  836. that the glory

  837. of the rich

  838. in this life

  839. is enough for us

  840. and we settle

  841. for so little

  842. when we do that.

  843. Because whatever glory

  844. that is,

  845. it's always fleeting,

  846. it's always dissatisfying,

  847. the pleasures

  848. always come

  849. and they go.

  850. And when Christians

  851. do this,

  852. when we seek

  853. the approval

  854. of the influential

  855. and the rich,

  856. what we're doing,

  857. we do that

  858. because we've diminished

  859. or we've forgotten

  860. the glory of Christ.

  861. You know,

  862. if we really grasp,

  863. again,

  864. in the deep places

  865. of our heart,

  866. if we really grasp

  867. that there is only

  868. one truly glorious person,

  869. He is absolute beauty,

  870. absolute truth,

  871. absolute goodness,

  872. absolute perfection.

  873. And if we really know

  874. that through the gospel

  875. we aren't merely

  876. associated with Him,

  877. we aren't merely

  878. glory adjacent

  879. in some detached way.

  880. And if we grasp

  881. that we don't merely

  882. follow His example

  883. in our own strength,

  884. but we're united to Him

  885. and we possess

  886. His Holy Spirit,

  887. that changes

  888. just about everything.

  889. It changes how you think

  890. about the very Christian

  891. life itself.

  892. What is the point

  893. of your Christian faith?

  894. What is the point of it?

  895. To glorify God

  896. and enjoy Him forever.

  897. You are Christian

  898. because God saved you

  899. not to live

  900. your best life now,

  901. but to make you

  902. like Christ,

  903. the glorious one,

  904. and to bring you

  905. into a share

  906. of His glory.

  907. And He sends trials

  908. along the way

  909. to ensure

  910. that we get there,

  911. to make us

  912. like Christ,

  913. and in order to get us

  914. to a share

  915. of that glory.

  916. The glory path

  917. that we walk

  918. is a path

  919. that inevitably

  920. requires us

  921. to go through

  922. the same trials

  923. that Jesus endured.

  924. If you want

  925. to be like Jesus,

  926. if you want

  927. to share eternity

  928. with Jesus,

  929. you have to walk

  930. the path

  931. that He walked.

  932. When we see

  933. the glory of Christ,

  934. that He is the glorious one,

  935. it changes the very

  936. Christian life itself,

  937. how we view it.

  938. It especially then

  939. changes also

  940. how you view

  941. other people

  942. in the church.

  943. When you are in Christ,

  944. the glorious one,

  945. you don't need

  946. earthly glory.

  947. Do you know that?

  948. When you have Christ,

  949. you have everything

  950. that you need.

  951. You don't need

  952. earthly glory,

  953. and you see

  954. that your poorer

  955. brothers and sisters

  956. share in that glory

  957. in the same way

  958. that you do,

  959. and you're equal.

  960. Can you see

  961. that Jesus Christ

  962. is the Lord of glory?

  963. And can you see

  964. that all the glory

  965. that you're searching

  966. for in other things

  967. is found in Him?

  968. Unless we are

  969. captivated by Christ's glory,

  970. we will be taken up

  971. by lesser glories.

  972. We'll be sucked in

  973. and seduced

  974. by lesser glories.

  975. I'll be dazzled

  976. by wealth and power

  977. and anything else

  978. that I might be able

  979. to get in on.

  980. Unless I am dazzled

  981. by Christ's glory,

  982. I'll be unimpressed

  983. with you if you can't

  984. meet my glory needs.

  985. If you're not

  986. going to be able

  987. to satisfy the glory

  988. hunger within me,

  989. well, you're no use to me.

  990. And so,

  991. partiality will

  992. inevitably follow.

  993. Lift your gaze

  994. from the petty glories

  995. of this life

  996. and set your mind

  997. and heart

  998. on the glory of Christ.

  999. Fatherhood of God,

  1000. the glory of Christ.

  1001. And then, thirdly,

  1002. James is more explicit

  1003. about this,

  1004. the judgment to come.

  1005. The judgment to come.

  1006. While we might make

  1007. these judgments

  1008. about people now,

  1009. that person's impressive,

  1010. that person's important,

  1011. not so much.

1012. Don't forget that we will

  1013. all one day

  1014. be judged ourselves.

  1015. Look at verse 12.

1016. So speak and so act

  1017. as those who are

  1018. to be judged

1019. under the law of liberty.

  1020. For judgment

  1021. is without mercy

1022. to one who has shown

  1023. no mercy.

  1024. mercy triumphs

  1025. over judgment.

  1026. The law of liberty

1027. that we have set aside

  1028. in our judging

  1029. between people

  1030. won't be set aside

  1031. on the last day

1032. when it is God's turn

  1033. to judge us.

  1034. When it's not you

  1035. standing at the door

  1036. of the church

  1037. making your judgment,

  1038. oh, impressive,

  1039. come and sit here,

  1040. lovely,

  1041. let me get you

  1042. a cup of tea,

  1043. but it's God

  1044. standing at the door

  1045. of heaven

  1046. as you approach.

  1047. As you approach

  1048. holding the two tablets

  1049. of the law

  1050. cracked apart

  1051. because you refuse

  1052. to love your neighbor

  1053. as yourself.

  1054. That's all of us.

  1055. That's all of us.

1056. What are we hoping for

  1057. at that moment?

  1058. What do we need

  1059. at that moment?

  1060. What we need

  1061. is mercy.

  1062. And we will plead,

  1063. Lord,

  1064. have mercy on me.

  1065. And you know

  1066. how God will reply?

  1067. You want mercy?

  1068. How much mercy

  1069. did you show

  1070. to the people

1071. who needed it from you?

  1072. The poor man,

  1073. the homeless,

  1074. the person

  1075. who could do

  1076. nothing for you.

  1077. Did you give them

  1078. time and care?

  1079. James reminds us

1080. that a day is coming

1081. and if we don't show mercy

1082. to those around us now,

1083. don't expect to get it

  1084. then from God.

  1085. God,

1086. it is a very solemn warning.

  1087. It's not just that

  1088. you're shortchanging

  1089. yourself then

  1090. if you choose

  1091. to pursue the favor

  1092. of the rich

  1093. and the powerful

1094. for what they can give you

  1095. in this life,

  1096. but you're doing

  1097. a terrible deal

  1098. with eternity.

  1099. But,

1100. it's not the last word,

  1101. is it?

  1102. Look at verse 13.

  1103. It is incredibly

  1104. convicting,

1105. but it's not the last word.

  1106. James also reminds us

  1107. that in Christ,

  1108. mercy triumphs

  1109. over judgment.

  1110. Because God is merciful,

  1111. we should be merciful.

  1112. Yes, we should,

1113. but we hear the challenge.

  1114. But when we sense

1115. the fact that we have

  1116. failed there,

  1117. we don't despair

  1118. because the one

  1119. who demands mercy

  1120. has also shown mercy.

  1121. Here's the thing

  1122. to go away with

  1123. this morning.

1124. For disciples of the Lord Jesus,

  1125. God's mercy

1126. is always the last word.

  1127. Mercy triumphs

  1128. over judgment.

  1129. The pursuit

  1130. of wealth and power

  1131. do not accomplish

  1132. the work of God.

  1133. The pursuit of wealth

  1134. and power

  1135. do not accomplish

  1136. the work of God,

  1137. either in our lives,

  1138. in the church,

  1139. or in the culture.

  1140. But a deep knowledge

1141. of the fatherhood of God,

  1142. the glory of Christ,

1143. and the judgment to come

  1144. will change us.

  1145. It will.

  1146. It will change us.

  1147. It will change

  1148. our relationship

  1149. to earthly glory,

  1150. and it will change

  1151. how we view others

  1152. in the church.

1153. So, may God help us.

  1154. Let's pray together.

  1155. Let's pray together.
