  1. Please turn, if you will, to John 7, verses 25 to 52.

    John 7:25–52

  2. So if you've got a church Bible, if you've got a black church Bible,

  3. that is on page 893, and they're just on the rack as you come in.

  4. And there is something, isn't there, about raising Jesus in conversation.

  5. I don't know whether you've experienced that in your office,

  6. or at the school gate, or in school, in the classroom.

  7. People don't seem to mind that I go to church.

  8. They quite like that I'm religious.

  9. They're interested that I'm a minister, but you bring Jesus into it,

  10. and people start to bristle a little bit, I find.

  11. I never cease to be amazed at just how confused people are about the Lord Jesus.

  12. How they've misunderstood him, or misunderstood what he came to bring.

  13. But there are many people out there that are hostile.

  14. There is a tension in our society.

  15. When you bring up Jesus, some people think of Jesus as a good person, a likable person.

  16. Some people might say, I'm all for Jesus, but I don't like the church.

  17. I like Jesus, but I don't like Christians.

  18. And I think that's so encouraging, is that when we come to the Gospels,

  19. that opposition to Jesus is the dominant response.

  20. Many reject him.

  21. Some reject Jesus out of complete ignorance.

  22. Some oppose him because they refuse to submit to his claims on their life.

  23. Some dislike Jesus intensely because he exposes religious hypocrisy.

  24. Some look at Jesus and think, you come from the wrong town, you've got the wrong accent.

  25. You've got the wrong background.

  26. Some think of Jesus, you're not educated like we are.

  27. How could this possibly be someone who is worth listening to?

  28. And yet, we see in the Gospels, don't we, some, who I hope like you tonight,

  29. some see Jesus and they rejoice.

  30. Who see Jesus and say, at last.

  31. There are some who see Jesus and they see in him bread for the hungry.

  32. Fresh water for the thirsty, sight for the blind, joy for the downhearted,

  33. deliverance for the broken, hope for the hopeless.

  34. And the key to receiving Jesus is knowing your need for Jesus.

  35. And that's why the religious leaders of Jesus' day,

  36. the ones that Reuben read to us about,

  37. they think they don't need the Lord Jesus because they've got religion.

  38. They've got their laws.

  39. They've got their system for improvement, self-improvement sorted out.

  40. Or there's the crowd and they're drawn to Jesus because they see in him,

  41. here is someone who can meet my physical needs.

  42. Food, health, here is someone who is entertaining, he puts on a good show.

  43. But the one who receives Jesus and gets real life, the life that lasts,

  44. is the one who sees Jesus and knows that they are spiritually poor.

  45. The one who receives Jesus is the one who knows that they are lost.

  46. The one who receives Jesus knows that they're running on empty.

  47. And they know that they have a thirst which cannot be quenched by anything in this world.

  48. Such a person who knows their spiritual thirst looks at Jesus and says,

  49. yes, at last.

  50. And there will be some here this evening who don't know this real need for Jesus.

  51. And maybe Jesus does not appear to you as wonderful as he really is.

  52. And there may be some who are here tonight, it's possible, isn't it, to grow up in a church like this

  53. and think that Jesus is for the weak but I'm strong.

  54. Jesus is for the hopeless and actually I'm self-sufficient.

  55. And some of us who have been Christians for many years, and that's most of us, isn't it,

  56. I think we too, I certainly can, lose that real sense of dependence on Jesus.

  57. The sense that I, moment by moment, hour by hour, day by day, month by month, year by year,

  58. need to be fed by Jesus.

  59. And need to depend on him for everything.

  60. And it's so easy to forget, it's so easy to become self-reliant.

  61. And so my prayer tonight as we walk through this passage is that God might do two things for us tonight.

  62. That he might give to you and to me a deep sense of our need of Jesus wherever we're at.

  63. And that he might fill us also with joy at the gift of Jesus.

  64. John 7, Jesus is back in Jerusalem, he's been absent for about a year.

  65. But Jerusalem is still buzzing from what Jesus did a year ago in chapter 6.

  66. He healed a well-known paralysed man.

  67. And he did it on the Sabbath and it raised all sorts of questions.

  68. And then Jesus left and now a year later he's back in Jerusalem.

  69. And he's arrived halfway through the Feast of Tabernacles.

  70. And Jesus appears and he amazes the crowd.

  71. They say, where did you get this teaching from, Jesus?

  72. And he says, I'm simply a servant of the one who sent me.

  73. And that leads us to our first point.

  74. There are three C's tonight and the sermon is like a sandwich.

  75. There is confusion on either side of calling.

  76. And so the first confusion is about the coming and going of Jesus.

  77. The confusion about the coming and going of Jesus.

  78. You see this particularly in verses 25 and 26.

  79. Look down there.

  80. There is confusion.

  81. And here is this man, the religious authorities, we know they want to arrest him.

  82. And they're planning to kill him.

  83. But they're not doing anything about it.

  84. And so maybe, just maybe, they've concluded that he really is the Messiah.

  85. He is from God.

  86. But then they're confused, verse 27.

  87. Because they think, well, when the Christ comes, no one will know where he's from.

  88. They've got this idea in their head that when the Christ, God's anointed king appears,

  89. when the saviour appears, he's going to come out of nowhere.

  90. And yet, they think, well, we know where this man comes from.

  91. We know that he comes from Nazareth, this little village in Galilee.

  92. And Jesus answers their confusion in verse 28.

  93. Can you see it?

  94. He cries out, he says, verse 28.

  95. He proclaims, he speaks loudly, you know me.

  96. And you know where I come from.

  97. But I've not come of my own accord.

  98. He who sent me is true, and him you do not know.

  99. I know him.

  100. For I come from him, and he sent me.

  101. Just think about that for a moment.

  102. Jesus is saying, yes, you know where I'm from, sort of.

  103. You know where I'm from in an earthly sense.

  104. You know the town that I grew up in, but you don't really know where I'm from.

  105. Because you do not know the one who sent me, the Father.

  106. You know my earthly origin, but not my heavenly origin.

  107. And that can be so easily true today, can't it?

  108. People try to make sense of Jesus just as a human phenomenon.

  109. They say, well I'm sure he was an extraordinary man who had an extraordinary influence.

  110. But they discount that Jesus actually came from heaven.

  111. And without understanding that, it is impossible to make sense of him.

  112. You will never know Jesus if you view him only from an earthly point of view.

  113. You will never come to Jesus because you'll only ever see him meeting needs that are earthly.

  114. But Jesus came from heaven.

  115. And the needs that he meets are heavenly.

  116. And the crowd, they only saw Jesus' earthly origin.

  117. They saw only his earthly usefulness.

  118. He was a great healer.

  119. They knew that he provided food.

  120. He put on a good show, so they missed Jesus.

  121. And the confusion continues.

  122. Some in the crowd, verse 30.

  123. Can you see that?

  124. So they are seeking to seize him, but no one laid a hand on him.

  125. Verse 31.

  126. Yet many of the people believed in him.

  127. Perhaps they believed in him.

  128. Verse 31.

  129. They said, when the Christ appears, will he do more signs than this man has done?

  130. That's not actually a good sign in John.

  131. In John, people's faith that's based on miracles is viewed with huge suspicion.

  132. They're only interested in the show, are they?

  133. Or are they interested in what the signs are pointing to?

  134. The Jewish religious leaders, they hear about Jesus' rising popularity in verse 32.

  135. And they send guards to arrest him.

  136. There is confusion about the coming of Jesus.

  137. But there's confusion about the going of Jesus.

  138. Look at verse 33.

  139. Jesus answered, I'll be with you a little longer.

  140. And then I am going to him who sent me.

  141. And you will seek me.

  142. And you will not find me.

  143. And where I am, you cannot come.

  144. At this point, the crowd's listening.

  145. They've not got a clue what he's going on about.

  146. Look at their response in verse 35.

  147. Where is he going to go that we would not be able to find him?

  148. Is he going to go out amongst the Greeks?

  149. Is he going to go out amongst the seas?

  150. Where's he going to go?

  151. Jesus is saying, isn't he?

  152. I am returning to my Father.

  153. I am returning to the one who sent me.

  154. And I am returning to him via death and resurrection and glorification.

  155. I'm with you on this earth only for a short time.

  156. So now, now is the moment to believe.

  157. Now is the moment to respond.

  158. Because the day is coming when you will look for me and I will not be there.

  159. And that can be as true for us as it can be for them.

  160. It may be that tonight, this very night,

  161. is the opportunity where Jesus says,

  162. now is the time to come.

  163. And you leave this room having said no to the Lord Jesus

  164. and you immerse yourself in one distraction,

  165. one false trail after another.

  166. And the opportunity is lost.

  167. And the moment goes.

  168. And you come face to face with the Lord Jesus on the last day.

  169. This, tonight, is the night Jesus will remember.

  170. The night when Jesus stood up on the feast on the last day

  171. and he called out,

  172. if anyone is thirsty, let him come to me and drink.

  173. That is the day they heard those words.

  174. And this is the night you hear those words.

  175. That Jesus has come to the Father

  176. and he is going to the Father

  177. and his coming and his going

  178. caused great confusion.

  179. But the second point is,

  180. Jesus calls tonight.

  181. Jesus calls us

  182. to come and drink.

  183. Listen again to the words of Jesus.

  184. Verse 37.

  185. They are remarkable words, aren't they?

  186. On the last day of the feast,

  187. the great day,

  188. Jesus stood up

  189. and he cried out,

  190. if anyone thirsts,

  191. let him come to me and drink.

  192. The feast that Jesus is talking about there,

  193. that he was on,

  194. right at the end,

  195. is the end of the harvest, really,

  196. commemorating God's goodness to them.

  197. God's goodness to them

  198. in bringing them out of the land of Egypt

  199. all those centuries ago

  200. and giving them harvest.

  201. God's kindness to them in the wilderness.

  202. And the festival was like a giant camping trip.

  203. It was like the IPC getaway up in Kazakh.

  204. People would come from all over the land

  205. and they would set up their tents

  206. and rent B&Bs

  207. and they would remember the years

  208. wandering in the wilderness

  209. where God provided for them.

  210. It would be a joyful feast,

  211. just like the IPC getaway will be in Kazakh.

  212. Booking spaces are still available.

  213. And they would give thanks

  214. for the blessing of God's provision.

  215. And it would be a joyful celebration,

  216. celebrating all of God's goodness,

  217. all of the good things that we need.

  218. And on the great day,

  219. Jesus stands up and he says,

  220. all those who are thirsty,

  221. come to me and drink.

  222. The Jewish people still celebrate the feast today.

  223. They celebrate.

  224. They give thanks for God's provision.

  225. And yet they've missed it.

  226. They've missed it.

  227. Jesus says,

  228. come to me all you who are thirsty

  229. and drink.

  230. I am God's great provision.

  231. And this invitation to Jesus

  232. is not just intellectual assent.

  233. It's a difficult question, isn't it?

  234. When we say to people,

  235. do you believe in Jesus?

  236. They say, well, yes, I believe in Jesus.

  237. What do they often mean by that?

  238. It's kind of an intellectual assent.

  239. It's a tick box, isn't it?

  240. In the census for what faith are you?

  241. But that's why John's gospel

  242. is so very, very helpful.

  243. What does it mean to believe in Jesus?

  244. Jesus keeps using vivid images of participation,

  245. of drinking,

  246. of eating.

  247. It is wholehearted participation

  248. in Jesus Christ.

  249. Jesus is the spiritual drink

  250. for the spiritually thirsty.

  251. And of course,

  252. you can't not think of,

  253. can you,

  254. that great passage in Isaiah,

  255. in Isaiah 55,

  256. where the servant of the Lord passages

  257. have happened.

  258. And the great climax of Isaiah 53

  259. depicting Christ's crucifixion.

  260. And then,

  261. chapter 55,

  262. the invitation,

  263. come everyone who thirsts,

  264. come to the waters,

  265. and he who has no money,

  266. come buy and eat,

  267. come buy wine and milk

  268. without money and without cost.

  269. Why do you spend your money

  270. for that which is not bread,

  271. and your labour for that

  272. which does not satisfy?

  273. Listen,

  274. listen to me.

  275. And eat what is good,

  276. and delight yourself

  277. in rich food.

  278. Incline your year,

  279. come to me,

  280. hear that your soul may live.

  281. And so Jesus stands on that day,

  282. and he says,

  283. come all who are thirsty.

  284. Jesus,

  285. the living water for our souls.

  286. Of course,

  287. it's full of the Old Testament,

  288. isn't it?

  289. There's people of Israel

  290. who had been redeemed from Israel

  291. and kept for 40 years

  292. in the wilderness.

  293. Do you remember?

  294. They were thirsty,

  295. and God provided water

  296. from a rock in the desert.

  297. And now,

  298. God has provided living water

  299. for you tonight in Jesus.

  300. Are you thirsty?

  301. Do you know your need for Jesus,

  302. for what he offers?

  303. Are you yearning for forgiveness

  304. and acceptance?

  305. Have you reached the end

  306. of your efforts,

  307. knowing that you are unable

  308. to do it?

  309. Because when you are truly thirsty,

  310. you will see Jesus

  311. and you will delight in him.

  312. You will delight in that soul

  313. quenching water

  314. that he provides.

  315. And the chances are,

  316. maybe,

  317. that tonight,

  318. you don't feel

  319. particularly spiritually thirsty.

  320. You may not particularly feel

  321. that you need Jesus right now.

  322. You've got things sorted,

  323. maybe.

  324. Can you heed the warning

  325. of verse 34?

  326. Look what verse 34 says.

  327. You will seek me

  328. and you will not find me.

  329. Where I am,

  330. you cannot come.

  331. You need to drink,

  332. don't you?

  333. Even when you don't feel thirsty.

  334. I'm not really a runner,

  335. despite my part run excellence.

  336. But I'm not really a runner.

  337. I don't do endurance sports.

  338. But the golden rule

  339. of hydration is this,

  340. all right?

  341. You don't wait

  342. until you're thirsty

  343. before you drink.

  344. Is that right?

  345. If you wait

  346. until you're thirsty

  347. in a marathon

  348. before you really start drinking,

  349. it's too late.

  350. Your body will never

  351. catch up

  352. on that hydration.

  353. And so,

  354. that is why, isn't it,

  355. you see people in marathons

  356. right at the end,

  357. they get delirious

  358. and they trudge along

  359. and they're all over the place

  360. and they don't know

  361. where they are.

  362. What's happened?

  363. They become dehydrated.

  364. Because in the endurance race,

  365. whether it's cycling

  366. or running

  367. or anything like that,

  368. you need to drink

  369. even if you don't feel thirsty.

  370. You need to drink

  371. when you feel great.

  372. You need to drink

  373. when you feel like

  374. you can keep on going

  375. at this pace forever.

  376. And you might feel your life,

  377. you're spiritually self-sufficient.

  378. Yeah, you assent to Jesus.

  379. Yeah, I'm part of the Christian club.

  380. But what does that actually mean

  381. for my dependence

  382. on Jesus moment by moment,

  383. day to day?

  384. Drink.

  385. Drink.

  386. All you who are thirsty,

  387. drink from this living water.

  388. And Jesus goes on to say,

  389. doesn't he,

  390. in verse 38,

  391. whoever believes in me,

  392. as the scripture says,

  393. whoever believes in me,

  394. streams of living water

  395. will flow out

  396. from within him.

  397. The one who drinks Jesus,

  398. that is,

  399. believes in him,

  400. will become

  401. not just filled

  402. with this water,

  403. but will become

  404. a source of living water

  405. for others.

  406. We could play with this image

  407. for ages,

  408. but I've got time.

  409. John tells us here,

  410. this is what Jesus meant,

  411. this living water

  412. from other people.

  413. Verse 39,

  414. he said,

  415. didn't he,

  416. now he said this

  417. about the Spirit,

  418. the Holy Spirit,

  419. whom those who believed in him

  420. were to receive,

  421. for as yet the Spirit

  422. had not been given,

  423. because Jesus

  424. was not yet glorified.

  425. He's teaching us really

  426. something important here,

  427. that after his death

  428. and his resurrection

  429. and his ascension

  430. and glorification,

  431. Jesus would give

  432. his Holy Spirit.

  433. And that's what

  434. he's talking about here.

  435. This living water,

  436. Jesus pours upon us

  437. by his Holy Spirit.

  438. That is the present work

  439. of the Holy Spirit,

  440. the fruit of the Holy Spirit,

  441. this pouring into us

  442. and through us,

  443. this living water.

  444. Of course,

  445. if you know your Bible,

  446. you know that the Holy Spirit

  447. was active in the Old Testament.

  448. The Holy Spirit

  449. was there in creation.

  450. Let us make man,

  451. God says.

  452. He was there

  453. in the kings,

  454. wasn't he,

  455. and in the prophets,

  456. and in the judges,

  457. and in the musicians,

  458. and the craftsmen.

  459. The Spirit was there

  460. and was upon them.

  461. But this full gift

  462. of the Holy Spirit

  463. is the fruit

  464. of Jesus' ministry.

  465. Up to that point,

  466. the Holy Spirit

  467. had not been given

  468. in this way,

  469. because the Son

  470. had not yet been glorified.

  471. this is what the Old Testament

  472. anticipated

  473. and pointed forward to.

  474. And they actually

  475. remembered it

  476. at the Feast of Tabernacles.

  477. It was one of the things

  478. they remembered.

  479. Let me read to you

  480. from Zechariah 12.

  481. You don't need to turn to it.

  482. But in Zechariah 12,

  483. this is what is promised.

  484. And I will pour out

  485. on the house of David

  486. and the inhabitants

  487. of Jerusalem

  488. a spirit of grace

  489. and please for mercy,

  490. so that when they look on me,

  491. on him whom they have pierced,

  492. they shall mourn for him.

  493. As one mourns

  494. for an only child

  495. and weep bitterly over him,

  496. as one weeps

  497. over a firstborn.

  498. And then in chapter 13,

  499. verse 1,

  500. on that day,

  501. there shall be a fountain

  502. opened in the house of David

  503. and the inhabitants

  504. of Jerusalem

  505. to cleanse them

  506. from all sin

  507. and unrighteousness.

  508. And here Jesus

  509. stands up in Jerusalem

  510. as the firstborn son.

  511. As the one who

  512. in six months' time

  513. they would pierce.

  514. And he says,

  515. when you pierce me

  516. on that day,

  517. a fountain will be opened

  518. that will cleanse you.

  519. And it will cleanse you

  520. from impurity

  521. and from sin.

  522. That's what living water does.

  523. It is a fountain

  524. of life and cleansing.

  525. And through us,

  526. this life and cleansing

  527. goes to others.

  528. A bit later in Zechariah chapter 14,

    Zechariah 14 chapter mention

  529. it says this,

  530. on that day,

  531. on that same day,

  532. living water will flow

  533. out of Jerusalem.

  534. Half to the eastern sea,

  535. half to the western sea,

  536. in summer and in winter.

  537. and the Lord,

  538. Yahweh,

  539. will be king

  540. over the whole earth.

  541. And on that day,

  542. there will be one Lord

  543. and his name,

  544. the only name.

  545. Living water

  546. flowing out

  547. in Jerusalem,

  548. flowing out

  549. across the lands

  550. to us here

  551. tonight,

  552. to the ends

  553. of the earth.

  554. And this need

  555. for water,

  556. this need

  557. is a cleansing

  558. from sin

  559. of bringing life

  560. to the dead.

  561. And that is the work

  562. of the risen Lord Jesus

  563. by his spirit

  564. in us.

  565. And praise God,

  566. it is the work

  567. of the risen Lord Jesus

  568. by his spirit

  569. through us

  570. going out

  571. from here

  572. as that living water

  573. goes out from us.

  574. Well, thirdly,

  575. there's confusion again

  576. in verse 43.

  577. Confusion and calling

  578. and confusion.

  579. The people are divided

  580. because of Jesus.

  581. Verse 40,

  582. some say,

  583. he is the prophet,

  584. the one that Moses said

  585. was coming.

  586. Others said,

  587. he is the Christ.

  588. Others said,

  589. how is it possible

  590. for the Christ

  591. to come from Galilee?

  592. The Christ

  593. is going to come

  594. from Bethlehem.

  595. They're so confused,

  596. aren't they again?

  597. A bit earlier on

  598. in the chapter,

  599. we saw earlier

  600. they said,

  601. well,

  602. when the Christ comes,

  603. we won't know

  604. where he comes from.

  605. But here's another group

  606. saying,

  607. actually,

  608. we are the ones

  609. that know

  610. where he's coming from.

  611. He's coming from Bethlehem.

  612. He's coming from

  613. the wrong place.

  614. They're thoroughly confused.

  615. Verse 44,

  616. again,

  617. some want to seize him,

  618. but no one

  619. laid their hands

  620. on him.

  621. Temple guards

  622. have been sent

  623. to arrest him.

  624. They come back

  625. to the Pharisees.

  626. In verse 45,

  627. the Pharisees say,

  628. why didn't you

  629. bring this Jesus

  630. back with you?

  631. And they say,

  632. can you see it?

  633. No one ever spoke

  634. like this man.

  635. No one ever spoke

  636. like this man.

  637. He's the greatest preacher

  638. I've ever heard.

  639. You can feel the temperature

  640. in the room rise,

  641. the Pharisees.

  642. The Pharisees

  643. fume.

  644. Are you kidding?

  645. Are you kidding me?

  646. Has he deceived you also?

  647. They say,

  648. has anyone

  649. of the people

  650. that really matter

  651. believed him?

  652. Have any of the rulers

  653. of the Pharisees

  654. believed him?

  655. Have any of the important

  656. people in Jerusalem

  657. believed in him?

  658. It is only you

  659. uneducated riffraff

  660. that believe in Jesus.

  661. You are fools

  662. to believe in him.

  663. A curse be upon you

  664. for believing

  665. this man is from God

  666. and yet there's one,

  667. isn't there?

  668. There's one

  669. who's not rejected Jesus.

  670. Verse 50,

  671. Nicodemus speaks up.

  672. Nicodemus comes back

  673. into the picture.

  674. And Nicodemus

  675. is on a journey

  676. here at the expense

  677. of his own reputation

  678. and position.

  679. It's not a massive

  680. stand he makes,

  681. is it?

  682. He simply says,

  683. don't you think

  684. it might be appropriate

  685. for us to investigate

  686. this a little bit

  687. further?

  688. To actually look

  689. at the evidence?

  690. How often,

  691. tragically,

  692. do people dismiss

  693. the Lord Jesus

  694. without even looking

  695. at the evidence?

  696. And Nicodemus says,

  697. he says,

  698. well how about,

  699. how about we actually

  700. check it out a little bit?

  701. We're reminded,

  702. aren't we,

  703. verse 50,

  704. that this is the same

  705. Nicodemus who'd come

  706. to Jesus in chapter 3

  707. in the middle of the night.

  708. And Jesus said to him,

  709. you must be born again,

  710. Nicodemus,

  711. to enter the kingdom

  712. of God.

  713. And here Nicodemus says,

  714. does our Lord judge

  715. a man without first

  716. giving him a hearing

  717. and learning what he does?

  718. Our society certainly

  719. condemns Jesus,

  720. don't they,

  721. without even listening

  722. to him,

  723. without hearing him.

  724. Nicodemus is wealthy,

  725. Nicodemus has power,

  726. he has influence,

  727. he is privileged,

  728. and yet Nicodemus

  729. knows his need.

  730. And Nicodemus is there

  731. at the end of the story.

  732. He's there in chapter 19

  733. when Jesus is taken down

  734. from the cross

  735. and it's Nicodemus

  736. who is there with Joseph,

  737. carrying Jesus' body,

  738. wrapping it,

  739. caring for it,

  740. laying it in a tomb

  741. because Nicodemus

  742. knew his need.

  743. He knew his thirst

  744. and he comes to Jesus.

  745. And so,

  746. from this passage,

  747. this week,

  748. we ought to expect

  749. when the name of Jesus

  750. comes up,

  751. great division,

  752. great confusion,

  753. great polarisation,

  754. anger,

  755. aggression.

  756. But we ought always

  757. to rejoice

  758. when those who are thirsty

  759. come to Jesus

  760. and are cleansed.

  761. And we need to come

  762. to Jesus.

  763. You may have been

  764. a Christian

  765. for 20,

  766. 30,

  767. 40 years.

  768. Children,

  769. do you know this?

  770. Do you know that your

  771. mum and dad

  772. needs to come

  773. to Jesus?

  774. In whatever situation

  775. of your life

  776. you're in tonight,

  777. you're at the end

  778. of your rope.

  779. You're at the end

  780. of your ability

  781. to deal

  782. with that situation.

  783. Come to Jesus.

  784. And tonight,

  785. things might be

  786. going brilliantly

  787. for you.

  788. You need to come

  789. to Jesus.

  790. So tragically,

  791. isn't it,

  792. we try to get

  793. that reviving energy

  794. from everything else.

  795. We make new resolutions.

  796. We try hard.

  797. And we can forget

  798. that it is Jesus

  799. who says,

  800. come all you

  801. who are thirsty,

  802. come to the waters,

  803. come by

  804. and eat.

  805. Listen to me.

  806. Eat what is good

  807. that your soul

  808. may delight

  809. in the richest affair.

  810. Give ear

  811. and come to me.

  812. Hear me

  813. that your soul

  814. may live.

  815. As we finish,

  816. let me show you

  817. just one little thing.

  818. Look at verse 37.

  819. on the last day

  820. of the feast,

  821. the great day,

  822. Jesus stood up.

  823. Teachers normally

  824. sat down

  825. in New Testament

  826. times,

  827. but Jesus

  828. stands up

  829. and he cries out.

  830. Kids,

  831. you're in school

  832. tomorrow

  833. and they're in the corridor

  834. and there's nobody

  835. moving in the corridor

  836. and there's bustling

  837. back and forth

  838. and the head

  839. master

  840. or the head

  841. mistress.

  842. She stands

  843. at the corridor

  844. and she

  845. raises her voice

  846. and she shouts

  847. and she wants you

  848. to hear,

  849. doesn't she?

  850. Let's say

  851. after the service,

  852. you're milling around

  853. after coffee and tea

  854. and somebody's got

  855. an announcement to make.

  856. They stand on a chair

  857. and they raise their voice.

  858. What are they doing?

  859. They're wanting you

  860. to listen.

  861. And Jesus Christ

  862. is standing up tonight

  863. and he is raising

  864. his voice

  865. and he is raising

  866. his voice

  867. because he wants

  868. you to listen.

  869. And this is what

  870. Jesus Christ

  871. wants you to hear.

  872. If anyone thirsts,

  873. let him come to me

  874. and drink.

  875. Let's pray.

  876. Let's pray.
