  1. Well, please turn with me in your Bibles if you have one with you, the 8th chapter of John's Gospel.

  2. If you do so, allow me to say for a moment what a pleasure and privilege it's been for me to be with you these past few weeks.

  3. I'm not sure if the pleasure exceeds the privilege or the privilege exceeds the pleasure.

  4. But I want to thank you for your kindness, the warmth of your welcome.

  5. Again, it's a sign of remarkable grace when English people in particular can welcome so warmly a Scot.

  6. I'm not sure it's easily reciprocated, sadly.

  7. It's lovely to be in a congregation so diverse as this.

  8. When I ministered in Scotland, everyone in the congregation was like me, pasty white.

  9. We had foreigners, but they came from Cheshire.

  10. But in Cambridge, we had a United Nations.

  11. We had about 14, 15 different nationalities.

  12. And I loved that.

  13. And I loved looking out and seeing people of different backgrounds, cultures, colours.

  14. But confessing the one God, the one Saviour, the one Lord and the one baptism.

  15. You'll notice there is an unusual heading to this passage if you have an ESV translation.

  16. The earliest manuscripts do not include 7, verse 53 to 8, 11.

  17. Well, and that's somewhat true.

  18. It's a partial truth.

  19. And often partial truths do not begin to reflect the whole truth.

  20. So I don't intend to spend any time on textual criticism, seeking to vindicate why I think this passage is authentic to the Gospel of John.

  21. You can take my word or you can go away and do some research on your own.

  22. One caveat as we begin.

  23. There is a never-present danger when Christian believers come to read the Bible.

  24. And the danger is this.

  25. We go to the Bible to find ourselves and not to find God.

  26. What I mean by that is we can read a passage like this and we can come away from it and someone might say,

  27. What were you hearing about this morning?

  28. And you reply, well, we were hearing about a woman who had sinned greatly, but she experienced the mercy and kindness of God.

  29. And the danger is that we remember the extremity of the woman and her sin.

  30. And we somewhat downplay what actually is the great emphasis in this passage, which is not actually about the woman.

  31. The great emphasis in the passage, and I hope you at least began to see that in the reading,

  32. the whole emphasis in the passage is to set before us Jesus Christ.

  33. Jesus had been scandalising the religious establishment.

  34. This man, they said, welcomes sinners.

  35. How can he really be the Messiah if he consorts with people like this woman?

  36. And John wants to show us that Jesus Christ truly is the Saint-One of God.

  37. That he is the one who has come from God.

  38. To reveal to us the heart of God.

  39. And so when we read the Bible, our first concern should always be,

  40. Lord, show me yourself.

  41. Show me your glory.

  42. Show me your grace.

  43. Show me your goodness.

  44. Show me your kindness.

  45. Show me your mercy.

  46. Lord, show me yourself.

  47. And so I hope this morning we will, in some measure at least,

  48. begin to see the Lord Jesus Christ as he is set before us by John.

  49. As I said in my introduction to the Bible reading,

  50. the Gospel of John is really an evangelistic tract.

  51. Of course, John is seeking to instruct believers in their faith in Jesus Christ.

  52. But he specifically tells us at the end of chapter 20,

  53. these things I have written that you might believe that Jesus truly is the Christ,

  54. the Son of God,

  55. and that by believing in him,

  56. you will have life,

  57. eternal life,

  58. fullness of life,

  59. with him.

  60. So John is out here not simply to educate us

  61. and instruct us,

  62. he is out to get us.

  63. He is out to persuade us.

  64. He is out to win us to Jesus Christ.

  65. It's a very dramatic encounter.

  66. The Gospel of John is significant for any number of things,

  67. but one of the significant features of John's Gospel

  68. is the way that John shows us Jesus

  69. in a number of dramatic encounters

  70. all the way through.

  71. You find him encountering Nathaniel

  72. at the end of chapter 1

  73. and disclosing to Nathaniel

  74. that he knows what's going on in his heart.

  75. In chapter 3 we find Jesus encountering Nicodemus.

  76. Now Nicodemus is called by Jesus

  77. in verse 10 of chapter 3,

  78. the teacher of Israel,

  79. the teacher of Israel,

  80. the reverend professor,

  81. Dr. Nicodemus.

  82. But Jesus said to this man

  83. with all his religion,

  84. you must be born again

  85. or born from above.

  86. All your religion

  87. does not make you right with God, Nicodemus.

  88. You need a new heart.

  89. You need a new beginning with God.

  90. You need God to come

  91. and make you new from the inside out.

  92. And then in dramatic contrast

  93. in chapter 4,

  94. we find Jesus meeting

  95. this woman,

  96. this woman from Samaria

  97. by the well of Sychar.

  98. It's a remarkable picture

  99. that's being painted for us

  100. in John chapter 4

    John 4 chapter mention

  101. because Jews

  102. had no dealings with Samaritans.

  103. But we find Jesus

  104. breaking every conceivable convention.

  105. He breaks religious convention

  106. by meeting with the woman.

  107. He breaks social convention

  108. by meeting with her alone.

  109. And he breaks moral convention.

  110. This woman had five husbands

  111. and she was now living with a six.

  112. He was a live-in lover.

  113. He was not her husband.

  114. But Jesus was going to be

  115. her seventh and last man.

  116. And Jesus evangelizes her.

  117. Not like the way he did

  118. with Nicodemus.

  119. His first words to Nicodemus were,

  120. you must be born again

  121. with the woman.

  122. Jesus starts very gently.

  123. He starts where she is.

  124. He's there to draw water

  125. and Jesus asks her for a drink.

  126. It's a very remarkable

  127. encounter that Jesus has.

  128. And slowly but surely

  129. he evangelizes the woman

  130. and draws her to himself.

  131. And John's gospel

  132. proliferates with these encounters.

  133. And here is another

  134. of those remarkable,

  135. dramatic encounters

  136. that are intended

  137. to do two things.

  138. Number one, principally,

  139. to set before us

  140. the heart of God.

  141. Behold your God.

  142. Is what this passage

  143. is saying to us.

  144. Jesus Christ is the revelation

  145. of God.

  146. John chapter 1 verse 18.

    John 1:18

  147. Jesus is the exegesis of God.

  148. He has come to make God known.

  149. There is no un-Christ likeness

  150. in God.

  151. Behold your God.

  152. And the second note

  153. that is struck in these encounters

  154. is no matter who you are,

  155. no matter how badly you have failed

  156. and fallen,

  157. no matter how messed up

  158. your life is,

  159. no matter how miserable you are,

  160. no matter how religious you are,

  161. what you need,

  162. Jesus Christ alone can give.

  163. let not conscience make you linger,

  164. nor of fitness fondly dream.

  165. All the fitness

  166. he requireth

  167. is to feel

  168. your need

  169. of him.

  170. So let me look with you

  171. at this passage.

  172. Notice

  173. three very simple things

  174. as we introduce

  175. this sermon

  176. focusing on this encounter.

  177. Notice first of all

  178. the human heartlessness

  179. that confronts us.

  180. These religious leaders,

  181. these scribes

  182. and Pharisees

  183. find a woman

  184. obviously

  185. and the narrative

  186. doesn't tell us this,

  187. but this is very

  188. peculiar

  189. and peculiar

  190. to Hebrew narrative.

  191. These men

  192. have been lying

  193. in wait.

  194. They've heard news,

  195. it would seem,

  196. that this woman,

  197. and we don't know

  198. about the man,

  199. I'll come to that

  200. in a moment,

  201. they're lying in wait

  202. and they,

  203. instead of

  204. stopping

  205. this

  206. illicit

  207. encounter,

  208. they let it happen

  209. in order

  210. to catch

  211. the woman

  212. in the very

  213. act

  214. of sexual

  215. adultery.

  216. There is a

  217. human

  218. heartlessness

  219. about this

  220. encounter

  221. as John

  222. introduces it

  223. to us.

  224. How cold

  225. hearted

  226. these men

  227. must have been.

  228. But then

  229. there was

  230. religious hypocrisy.

  231. Where is the man?

  232. Why are we not

  233. bringing him

  234. to Jesus?

  235. Why are we dragging

  236. this poor woman?

  237. Where is the man?

  238. There is a

  239. selectivity

  240. about these

  241. religious leaders.

  242. They're not only

  243. humanly heartless,

  244. they're religious

  245. hypocrites.

  246. They say

  247. that they are

  248. concerned about

  249. honouring the

  250. law of God.

  251. But the law

  252. of God

  253. equally condemned

  254. the man

  255. as well as the

  256. woman caught

  257. in adultery.

  258. Where is the

  259. man?

  260. And then we see

  261. thirdly a

  262. satanic

  263. wickedness.

  264. Human

  265. heartlessness,

  266. religious

  267. hypocrisy

  268. and satanic

  269. wickedness.

  270. What are they

  271. doing?

  272. They're out

  273. to

  274. entrap

  275. Jesus.

  276. They bring

  277. the woman

  278. to Jesus,

  279. teach

  280. of us

  281. women to be

  282. caught in the

  283. act of

  284. adultery.

  285. now in the

  286. law,

  287. Moses

  288. commanded us

  289. to stone

  290. such women.

  291. Actually it

  292. didn't.

  293. It's probably

  294. inferred,

  295. but it doesn't

  296. actually say

  297. they were to

  298. be stoned.

  299. So what do

  300. you say?

  301. They said this

  302. to test

  303. him or

  304. entrap

  305. him that

  306. they might

  307. have some

  308. charge to

  309. bring against

  310. him.

  311. They're not

  312. interested in

  313. the woman.

  314. they couldn't

  315. care less

  316. about the

  317. breach of

  318. the seventh

  319. commandment,

  320. you shall

  321. not commit

  322. adultery.

  323. They were

  324. out to

  325. get Jesus.

  326. They wanted

  327. to place

  328. Jesus on

  329. the horns

  330. of a

  331. dilemma.

  332. If Jesus

  333. said,

  334. yes,

  335. take her

  336. out,

  337. stone her

  338. to death,

  339. they could

  340. immediately

  341. report him

  342. to the

  343. Roman

  344. authorities,

  345. who alone

  346. had the

  347. power and

  348. the

  349. authority

  350. to put

  351. anyone to

  352. death.

  353. But if

  354. Jesus said,

  355. no,

  356. he is

  357. not

  358. worthy

  359. of death,

  360. they could

  361. say,

  362. well,

  363. there you

  364. go.

  365. He's

  366. denying

  367. the plain

  368. teaching

  369. of the

  370. Bible.

  371. You see,

  372. the Pharisees,

  373. and the

  374. word literally

  375. means the

  376. separated

  377. ones,

  378. the elite,

  379. they believed

  380. every word

  381. in the

  382. Bible.

  383. They were

  384. Bible

  385. literalists.

  386. But they

  387. had sucked

  388. the marrow

  389. of grace

  390. and mercy

  391. out of the

  392. Holy Scriptures

  393. because they

  394. didn't know

  395. the God

  396. who gave

  397. the Holy

  398. Scriptures.

  399. They interpreted

  400. the Scriptures

  401. others apart

  402. from the

  403. character of

  404. God.

  405. And there

  406. is a

  407. satanic

  408. wickedness

  409. here.

  410. They're out

  411. to further

  412. their own

  413. aims and

  414. ends.

  415. They want

  416. to get

  417. Jesus at

  418. all costs.

  419. And so

  420. they bring

  421. this woman

  422. to Jesus.

  423. You don't

  424. need much

  425. imagination

  426. to think

  427. how

  428. humiliated

  429. she must

  430. have felt.

  431. Publicly

  432. shamed.

  433. Perhaps

  434. in the

  435. state of

  436. some

  437. undress.

  438. Dragged

  439. through

  440. the dust.

  441. humiliated

  442. shamed

  443. and now

  444. brought

  445. to

  446. Jesus.

  447. So this

  448. morning I

  449. want to

  450. look with

  451. you especially

  452. at Jesus

  453. response

  454. and reaction

  455. to

  456. the

  457. events

  458. that

  459. unfolded.

  460. There are

  461. four things

  462. to notice

  463. first of

  464. all.

  465. Number

  466. one

  467. noticed

  468. Jesus

  469. silence.

  470. So they

  471. say to

  472. Jesus

  473. the

  474. law of

  475. Moses

  476. commanded

  477. us to

  478. stone

  479. such

  480. women.

  481. What

  482. do you

  483. say?

  484. Jesus

  485. bent

  486. down

  487. and

  488. wrote

  489. with

  490. his

  491. finger

  492. on

  493. the

  494. ground.

  495. Initially

  496. he's

  497. silent.

  498. Why

  499. is he

  500. silent?

  501. well we're

  502. not told

  503. are we?

  504. Again that's

  505. very

  506. Hebrew

  507. narrative.

  508. We're

  509. left to

  510. infer.

  511. Was he

  512. stunned

  513. by the

  514. heartlessness

  515. and the

  516. wickedness

  517. of these

  518. religious

  519. leaders?

  520. Was he

  521. speechless

  522. at their

  523. heartlessness,

  524. their

  525. wickedness,

  526. their

  527. hypocrisy?

  528. Well we're

  529. not told.

  530. What he

  531. does is to

  532. bend down

  533. and write

  534. on the

  535. ground.

  536. And again

  537. we might

  538. ask, well

  539. what was he

  540. writing?

  541. If you

  542. can read

  543. that

  544. passage and

  545. not ask

  546. yourself,

  547. what exactly

  548. was he

  549. writing?

  550. Well we're

  551. not told.

  552. But again

  553. this is the

  554. way Hebrew

  555. narrative

  556. operates.

  557. It's a

  558. Greek text but

  559. it's very

  560. Hebraic.

  561. We're

  562. expected to

  563. join up the

  564. dots, we're

  565. expected to

  566. know our

  567. Bibles well

  568. enough to

  569. think perhaps

  570. this, ah,

  571. ah,

  572. ah.

  573. That's

  574. Jeremiah 17.

  575. isn't it?

  576. That's what

  577. you're all

  578. thinking.

  579. That's

  580. Jeremiah 17.

  581. Listen to

  582. these words,

  583. O Lord,

  584. the hope of

  585. Israel, all

  586. who forsake

  587. you shall be

  588. put to

  589. shame.

  590. Those who

  591. turn away

  592. from you

  593. shall be

  594. written on

  595. the earth.

  596. For they

  597. have forsaken

  598. the Lord,

  599. the fountain

  600. of living

  601. water.

  602. O Lord,

  603. the hope of

  604. Israel, all

  605. who forsake

  606. you shall be

  607. put to

  608. shame.

  609. They

  610. brought this

  611. woman and

  612. shamed her.

  613. And what

  614. Jesus is now

  615. doing is

  616. shaming them.

  617. Now I

  618. don't know for

  619. certain that

  620. that's what the

  621. Lord was

  622. doing.

  623. There are

  624. other

  625. interpretations

  626. but I

  627. think perhaps

  628. the Lord was

  629. saying to

  630. them, so

  631. you want to

  632. quote the

  633. Bible?

  634. Well let's

  635. quote the

  636. Bible.

  637. what do

  638. you make

  639. of Jeremiah

  640. 1710?

  641. All who

  642. forsake me

  643. the fountain

  644. of living

  645. water shall

  646. have their

  647. names written

  648. in the dust.

  649. Some

  650. commentators

  651. think as

  652. Jesus goes

  653. on and

  654. they continue

  655. asking him

  656. and he

  657. continues to

  658. write.

  659. Some even

  660. suggest that

  661. he's writing

  662. their names.

  663. I don't

  664. know that.

  665. sometimes

  666. silence is

  667. the only

  668. fitting

  669. response to

  670. human

  671. heartlessness

  672. and religious

  673. hypocrisy.

  674. One of the

  675. things I

  676. would often

  677. tell my

  678. assistants in

  679. Cambridge

  680. and the

  681. students that

  682. I teach

  683. is that

  684. you can't

  685. quantify it

  686. but I

  687. would often

  688. say 90%

  689. of pastoral

  690. ministry is

  691. learning to

  692. cultivate the

  693. art of

  694. silence.

  695. But here

  696. our Lord

  697. his initial

  698. response is

  699. one of

  700. silence.

  701. But then

  702. secondly

  703. notice Jesus

  704. challenge.

  705. They continue

  706. to ask him.

  707. They're

  708. pressing

  709. Jesus and

  710. so he

  711. stands up

  712. and says

  713. to them

  714. let him

  715. who is

  716. without sin

  717. among you

  718. be the

  719. first to

  720. throw a

  721. stone at

  722. her.

  723. You want

  724. to throw

  725. stones?

  726. Well what

  727. does the

  728. law say?

  729. Well in

  730. the book of

  731. Leviticus it

  732. says that

  733. when you

  734. accuse someone

  735. of adultery

  736. and it was a

  737. capital charge

  738. because adultery

  739. was not

  740. simply conceived

  741. of as an

  742. illicit

  743. physical act

  744. it was

  745. seen to be

  746. stabbing a

  747. dagger into

  748. the very

  749. heart of

  750. society

  751. breaking

  752. asunder

  753. families

  754. destroying

  755. lives

  756. dismembering

  757. children

  758. and those

  759. who brought

  760. the charge

  761. they were

  762. to be the

  763. ones to

  764. throw the

  765. first stone.

  766. And so

  767. Jesus says

  768. okay

  769. let him

  770. who is

  771. without sin

  772. cast the

  773. first stone.

  774. Now Jesus

  775. could hardly

  776. be saying

  777. you can

  778. only judge

  779. other people

  780. when you're

  781. sinless.

  782. He's not

  783. saying that

  784. otherwise

  785. there will

  786. be no

  787. law courts

  788. no judges

  789. no anything.

  790. Jesus is

  791. putting his

  792. finger on

  793. their

  794. consciences.

  795. He's

  796. probing

  797. their

  798. hearts.

  799. He's

  800. seeking to

  801. bring the

  802. law of

  803. God to

  804. bear

  805. upon

  806. their

  807. heartlessness

  808. and

  809. inhumanity.

  810. Some

  811. suggest

  812. the way

  813. the language

  814. is

  815. constructed

  816. that Jesus

  817. is saying

  818. you want

  819. to talk

  820. about adultery?

  821. Okay

  822. let's talk

  823. about adultery.

  824. You remember

  825. earlier

  826. in the

  827. gospel

  828. accounts

  829. Matthew 5

  830. Jesus says

  831. when a man

  832. looks at a

  833. woman

  834. lustfully

  835. and mentally

  836. copulates

  837. with her

  838. that's as

  839. bad in

  840. God's

  841. sight as

  842. the physical

  843. act itself

  844. and some

  845. suggest

  846. Jesus is

  847. saying to

  848. these men

  849. so this

  850. woman's been

  851. caught in

  852. the act of

  853. adultery

  854. what about

  855. you?

  856. God has

  857. caught you

  858. many a

  859. time in

  860. the act

  861. of adultery

  862. I'm not

  863. sure about

  864. that I

  865. think it's

  866. simply more

  867. likely Jesus

  868. is probing

  869. their

  870. consciences

  871. and he's

  872. challenging

  873. them

  874. and remarkably

  875. once more

  876. he bends

  877. down and

  878. writes on

  879. the ground

  880. some

  881. commentators

  882. think he

  883. was actually

  884. doodling

  885. and you

  886. know that's

  887. not fanciful

  888. sometimes

  889. life can

  890. be so

  891. surreal

  892. sometimes

  893. religious

  894. behaviour

  895. can be

  896. so

  897. tragic

  898. tragic

  899. comedic

  900. almost

  901. that you

  902. just

  903. think

  904. are you

  905. serious?

  906. I can't

  907. get my

  908. head around

  909. this

  910. you know

  911. I don't

  912. think he

  913. was doodling

  914. but

  915. when they

  916. heard it

  917. they went

  918. away

  919. one

  920. by one

  921. beginning

  922. with the

  923. older ones

  924. and Jesus

  925. was left

  926. alone

  927. with the

  928. woman

  929. standing

  930. before him

  931. conviction

  932. of sin

  933. had begun

  934. to afflict

  935. their

  936. consciences

  937. but notice

  938. this

  939. conviction

  940. of sin

  941. is not

  942. conversion

  943. from sin

  944. were any

  945. of these

  946. men

  947. later

  948. converted

  949. were not

  950. told

  951. wouldn't

  952. it be

  953. wonderful

  954. to discover

  955. in heaven's

  956. glory

  957. that some

  958. or at

  959. least one

  960. of these

  961. men

  962. would be

  963. around the

  964. throne of

  965. God

  966. saying I

  967. bless God

  968. for the

  969. day

  970. that the

  971. son of

  972. God

  973. said

  974. those of

  975. you without

  976. sin

  977. cast the

  978. first stone

  979. but you

  980. can be

  981. convicted

  982. of sin

  983. and have

  984. your conscience

  985. afflict you

  986. of the

  987. reality of

  988. sin and

  989. not be

  990. converted

  991. from sin

  992. we're told

  993. in the

  994. letter to

  995. the Hebrews

  996. about Esau

  997. Esau was

  998. beside himself

  999. when he

  1000. sold his

  1001. birthright

  1002. for a

  1003. mess of

  1004. pottage

  1005. as the

  1006. King James

  1007. version puts

  1008. it and he

  1009. was sorry

  1010. he was very

  1011. sorry and he

  1012. wept tears

  1013. but he wasn't

  1014. converted

  1015. he didn't

  1016. come and

  1017. prostrate

  1018. himself and

  1019. say God

  1020. be merciful

  1021. to me

  1022. the sinner

  1023. being convicted

  1024. of sin

  1025. of being a

  1026. sinner before

  1027. God

  1028. it doesn't

  1029. even take you

  1030. halfway there

  1031. you can end

  1032. up living all

  1033. your life

  1034. aware you're

  1035. a sinner

  1036. and never

  1037. yet fly to

  1038. Jesus Christ

  1039. for mercy

  1040. forgiveness

  1041. and for

  1042. salvation

  1043. and so

  1044. Jesus

  1045. challenge

  1046. results in

  1047. the men

  1048. going away

  1049. one by one

  1050. and then

  1051. thirdly we

  1052. have Jesus

  1053. mercy

  1054. we're seeing

  1055. Jesus

  1056. silence

  1057. Jesus

  1058. challenge

  1059. and then

  1060. Jesus

  1061. mercy

  1062. Jesus

  1063. was left

  1064. alone

  1065. with the

  1066. woman

  1067. standing

  1068. before him

  1069. can you

  1070. imagine

  1071. what that

  1072. woman

  1073. must have

  1074. been wondering

  1075. she's been

  1076. dragged

  1077. unceremoniously

  1078. shamelessly

  1079. publicly

  1080. she's been

  1081. humiliated

  1082. the threat

  1083. of death

  1084. was hanging

  1085. over her

  1086. and now

  1087. all her

  1088. accusers

  1089. have

  1090. vanished

  1091. she must

  1092. have been

  1093. absolutely

  1094. bewildered

  1095. just

  1096. what

  1097. what's

  1098. what's

  1099. happening

  1100. what

  1101. on earth

  1102. is happening

  1103. to me

  1104. Jesus

  1105. was left

  1106. alone

  1107. with the

  1108. woman

  1109. Jesus

  1110. stood up

  1111. and said

  1112. to her

  1113. woman

  1114. where are

  1115. they

  1116. has no one

  1117. condemned

  1118. you

  1119. she said

  1120. no one

  1121. Lord

  1122. no one

  1123. and Jesus

  1124. said to her

  1125. neither do I

  1126. condemn you

  1127. Augustine

  1128. great early

  1129. church father

  1130. has a

  1131. wonderful

  1132. wonderful

  1133. statement

  1134. I know

  1135. someone here

  1136. is a

  1137. Latin

  1138. so I'm

  1139. going to

  1140. tell you

  1141. Latin

  1142. and I

  1143. translate it

  1144. so you're

  1145. okay

  1146. he comments

  1147. in this

  1148. passage

  1149. and he

  1150. says

  1151. relicti

  1152. sunt

  1153. duo

  1154. miserat

  1155. et misericordia

  1156. there remained

  1157. but two

  1158. misery

  1159. and mercy

  1160. neither do I

  1161. condemn you

  1162. how could

  1163. Jesus say

  1164. that to

  1165. her

  1166. she

  1167. committed

  1168. an

  1169. altering

  1170. and that

  1171. was just

  1172. if you

  1173. like the

  1174. the

  1175. efflorescence

  1176. the

  1177. flowering

  1178. the

  1179. outward

  1180. observation

  1181. of her

  1182. sinful

  1183. life

  1184. how could

  1185. Jesus

  1186. just say

  1187. well

  1188. I

  1189. don't

  1190. condemn

  1191. you

  1192. because

  1193. he had

  1194. come into

  1195. the world

  1196. to be a

  1197. sin

  1198. bearing

  1199. sin

  1200. atoning

  1201. saviour

  1202. he knew

  1203. the day

  1204. would come

  1205. when he

  1206. would bear

  1207. the condemnation

  1208. of her

  1209. adultery

  1210. on himself

  1211. the day

  1212. would come

  1213. when God

  1214. would lay

  1215. on him

  1216. the iniquity

  1217. of us

  1218. all

  1219. Isaiah

  1220. 53

  1221. he

  1222. wasn't

  1223. sweeping

  1224. her sin

  1225. under the

  1226. carpet

  1227. he wasn't

  1228. turning a

  1229. blind eye

  1230. he wasn't

  1231. just

  1232. saying

  1233. well

  1234. let's

  1235. bygones

  1236. be

  1237. bygones

  1238. in those

  1239. words

  1240. of

  1241. Jesus

  1242. Christ

  1243. he

  1244. was

  1245. in

  1246. effect

  1247. saying

  1248. the

  1249. woman

  1250. wouldn't

  1251. know

  1252. it

  1253. later

  1254. she

  1255. would

  1256. I'm

  1257. going

  1258. to pay

  1259. the price

  1260. for that

  1261. sin

  1262. I'm

  1263. going

  1264. to die

  1265. the death

  1266. that sin

  1267. and all

  1268. your sins

  1269. deserved

  1270. neither

  1271. do I

  1272. condemn

  1273. you

  1274. you see

  1275. the great

  1276. first movement

  1277. of the

  1278. gospel

  1279. is to

  1280. set before

  1281. us

  1282. the love

  1283. of God

  1284. John Owen

  1285. the English

  1286. Puritan

  1287. said

  1288. many

  1289. Christians

  1290. find it

  1291. hard to

  1292. believe

  1293. there is

  1294. any

  1295. sweetness

  1296. in God

  1297. except

  1298. what was

  1299. purchased

  1300. at the

  1301. high cost

  1302. of Jesus

  1303. blood

  1304. but the

  1305. Bible

  1306. tells us

  1307. that God

  1308. so loved

  1309. the world

  1310. that he

  1311. gave

  1312. Jesus

  1313. didn't

  1314. come

  1315. to

  1316. procure

  1317. the

  1318. love

  1319. of

  1320. God

  1321. he

  1322. came

  1323. as

  1324. the

  1325. evidence

  1326. and

  1327. gift

  1328. of

  1329. the

  1330. love

  1331. of

  1332. God

  1333. the

  1334. first

  1335. great

  1336. movement

  1337. of

  1338. the

  1339. gospel

  1340. is

  1341. God

  1342. so

  1343. loved

  1344. the

  1345. world

  1346. that

  1347. he

  1348. gave

  1349. and

  1350. that

  1351. has

  1352. to

  1353. be

  1354. the

  1355. primary

  1356. note

  1357. in

  1358. Christian

  1359. worship

  1360. in

  1361. Christian

  1362. preaching

  1363. in

  1364. Christian

  1365. serving

  1366. and so

  1367. Jesus

  1368. shows

  1369. this

  1370. woman

  1371. great

  1372. mercy

  1373. because

  1374. he

  1375. himself

  1376. would

  1377. bear

  1378. the

  1379. price

  1380. of her

  1381. sin

  1382. but then

  1383. fourthly

  1384. notice

  1385. Jesus

  1386. command

  1387. Jesus

  1388. silence

  1389. Jesus

  1390. challenge

  1391. Jesus

  1392. mercy

  1393. and then

  1394. Jesus

  1395. command

  1396. neither

  1397. do I

  1398. condemn

  1399. you

  1400. go

  1401. it's an

  1402. imperative

  1403. there

  1404. go

  1405. as a

  1406. command

  1407. and

  1408. from

  1409. now

  1410. on

  1411. sin

  1412. no

  1413. more

  1414. this

  1415. woman

  1416. was being

  1417. forgiven

  1418. she

  1419. was being

  1420. shown

  1421. mercy

  1422. that

  1423. she

  1424. might

  1425. now

  1426. live

  1427. a new

  1428. life

  1429. that

  1430. the

  1431. dominant

  1432. note

  1433. in her

  1434. life

  1435. will

  1436. no

  1437. longer

  1438. be

  1439. sin

  1440. and

  1441. rebellion

  1442. against

  1443. God

  1444. transgression

  1445. of his

  1446. law

  1447. but from

  1448. now

  1449. on

  1450. she

  1451. would

  1452. be

  1453. living

  1454. unto

  1455. God

  1456. she

  1457. would

  1458. be

  1459. a

  1460. hater

  1461. of

  1462. sin

  1463. and

  1464. a

  1465. lover

  1466. of

  1467. righteousness

  1468. you

  1469. see

  1470. God

  1471. doesn't

  1472. save

  1473. us

  1474. to

  1475. leave

  1476. us

  1477. as

  1478. we

  1479. are

  1480. he

  1481. saves

  1482. us

  1483. and

  1484. restores

  1485. us

  1486. to

  1487. himself

  1488. to

  1489. change

  1490. us

  1491. and

  1492. make

  1493. us

  1494. new

  1495. and

  1496. fit

  1497. us

  1498. for

  1499. his

  1500. fellowship

  1501. in

  1502. heaven's

  1503. glory

  1504. if

  1505. this

  1506. morning

  1507. you

  1508. are

  1509. simply

  1510. continuing

  1511. !

  1512. sin

  1513. no

  1514. matter

  1515. how

  1516. eloquent

  1517. your

  1518. evangelical

  1519. testimony

  1520. is

  1521. it's

  1522. a

  1523. charade

  1524. because

  1525. when

  1526. we

  1527. are

  1528. united

  1529. to

  1530. Jesus

  1531. Christ

  1532. new

  1533. creation

  1534. we

  1535. begin

  1536. to

  1537. hate

  1538. sin

  1539. and

  1540. when

  1541. we

  1542. do

  1543. sin

  1544. we

  1545. are

  1546. shamed

  1547. by

  1548. it

  1549. we

  1550. are

  1551. humbled

  1552. by

  1553. it

  1554. and

  1555. we

  1556. unceasingly

  1557. cry

  1558. to

  1559. the

  1560. Lord

  1561. to

  1562. forgive

  1563. us

  1564. for

  1565. Jesus

  1566. sake

  1567. because

  1568. of

  1569. it

  1570. go

  1571. and

  1572. sin

  1573. no

  1574. more

  1575. that's

  1576. that's

  1577. the

  1578. calling

  1579. of

  1580. every

  1581. Christian

  1582. you

  1583. see

  1584. is

  1585. this

  1586. not

  1587. an

  1588. unrealistic

  1589. calling

  1590. obviously

  1591. not

  1592. Jesus

  1593. Christ

  1594. said

  1595. go

  1596. and

  1597. sin

  1598. no

  1599. more

  1600. does

  1601. that

  1602. mean

  1603. it's

  1604. possible

  1605. that

  1606. I

  1607. won't

  1608. sin

  1609. anymore

  1610. do

  1611. you

  1612. know

  1613. your

  1614. own

  1615. heart

  1616. at

  1617. all

  1618. no

  1619. we

  1620. sin

  1621. but

  1622. that's

  1623. our

  1624. calling

  1625. to

  1626. sin

  1627. no

  1628. more

  1629. to

  1630. have

  1631. done

  1632. with

  1633. sin

  1634. to

  1635. be

  1636. quit

  1637. with

  1638. sin

  1639. every

  1640. sin

  1641. every

  1642. sin

  1643. you

  1644. and

  1645. I

  1646. commit

  1647. is

  1648. a

  1649. rebellion

  1650. against

  1651. God

  1652. a

  1653. transgression

  1654. of his

  1655. mercy

  1656. and love

  1657. every

  1658. sin

  1659. if it

  1660. had

  1661. its

  1662. own

  1663. way

  1664. would

  1665. un

  1666. god

  1667. god

  1668. the

  1669. puritans

  1670. would

  1671. often

  1672. say

  1673. sin

  1674. is

  1675. god

  1676. killing

  1677. sin

  1678. is

  1679. god

  1680. killing

  1681. if sin

  1682. could

  1683. have

  1684. its

  1685. way

  1686. it

  1687. would

  1688. kill

  1689. god

  1690. every

  1691. sin

  1692. what we

  1693. call

  1694. little

  1695. sins

  1696. if sin

  1697. had

  1698. its

  1699. way

  1700. at the

  1701. heart

  1702. of

  1703. every

  1704. sin

  1705. there is

  1706. the

  1707. desire

  1708. to

  1709. kill

  1710. god

  1711. and so

  1712. the

  1713. christian

  1714. who has

  1715. been

  1716. forgiven

  1717. and who

  1718. has

  1719. received

  1720. mercy

  1721. has set

  1722. before

  1723. them

  1724. a new

  1725. life

  1726. to love

  1727. god's

  1728. commandments

  1729. and to

  1730. love the

  1731. god who

  1732. gave the

  1733. commandments

  1734. so let

  1735. me try

  1736. and just

  1737. in a

  1738. moment or

  1739. two

  1740. highlight

  1741. three

  1742. great

  1743. truths

  1744. that this

  1745. encounter

  1746. highlights

  1747. for us

  1748. number

  1749. one

  1750. it shows

  1751. us the

  1752. gospel

  1753. is glorious

  1754. good news

  1755. that we

  1756. can go

  1757. to men

  1758. and women

  1759. whose

  1760. lives

  1761. have been

  1762. utterly

  1763. disfigured

  1764. and dismembered

  1765. by sin

  1766. you know

  1767. we live

  1768. in a

  1769. culture

  1770. today

  1771. in

  1772. Britain

  1773. where

  1774. people

  1775. are

  1776. three

  1777. four

  1778. almost

  1779. five

  1780. generations

  1781. many of

  1782. them

  1783. removed

  1784. from

  1785. anything

  1786. christian

  1787. life

  1788. is

  1789. dysfunctional

  1790. someone

  1791. maybe one

  1792. day will

  1793. wake up

  1794. and say

  1795. have we

  1796. ever asked

  1797. the question

  1798. why

  1799. is our

  1800. society

  1801. so

  1802. socially

  1803. and morally

  1804. dysfunctional

  1805. people with

  1806. broken lives

  1807. broken homes

  1808. broken

  1809. relationships

  1810. partners by

  1811. the dozen

  1812. life has

  1813. just been

  1814. a succession

  1815. of

  1816. miserable

  1817. encounters

  1818. and the

  1819. gospel of

  1820. God says

  1821. I've got good

  1822. news for you

  1823. no matter

  1824. how mangled

  1825. your life

  1826. no matter

  1827. whether you've

  1828. had five

  1829. husbands

  1830. and are

  1831. living with

  1832. a six

  1833. live-in

  1834. lover

  1835. here's good

  1836. news for

  1837. you

  1838. God sent

  1839. his son

  1840. into the

  1841. world

  1842. not to

  1843. condemn

  1844. the world

  1845. but to

  1846. save the

  1847. world

  1848. through him

  1849. there is

  1850. forgiveness

  1851. with God

  1852. that he

  1853. might be

  1854. feared

  1855. there are

  1856. new beginnings

  1857. to be

  1858. had

  1859. if you

  1860. would have

  1861. them

  1862. good news

  1863. good news

  1864. secondly

  1865. beware of

  1866. being strict

  1867. about other

  1868. people's sins

  1869. and soft

  1870. about your

  1871. own

  1872. these

  1873. religious

  1874. leaders

  1875. they were

  1876. strict

  1877. about this

  1878. woman's

  1879. sin

  1880. but they

  1881. were

  1882. soft

  1883. on their

  1884. own

  1885. sins

  1886. of human

  1887. heartlessness

  1888. and religious

  1889. hypocrisy

  1890. remember

  1891. Jesus'

  1892. words in

  1893. Matthew 11

  1894. it will be

  1895. better for

  1896. Sodom

  1897. Sodom

  1898. notorious

  1899. for

  1900. flagrant

  1901. egregious

  1902. immorality

  1903. sodomy

  1904. it will be

  1905. better for

  1906. Sodom

  1907. than for

  1908. covenant

  1909. privilege

  1910. Capernaum

  1911. on the

  1912. day of

  1913. judgment

  1914. beware of

  1915. being strict

  1916. about other

  1917. people's

  1918. sins

  1919. and soft

  1920. about your

  1921. own sins

  1922. remember

  1923. Jesus spoke

  1924. about people

  1925. who are

  1926. very acutely

  1927. observant

  1928. at seeing

  1929. specks

  1930. in other

  1931. people

  1932. that they

  1933. are blind

  1934. to the

  1935. sins

  1936. in their

  1937. own

  1938. life

  1939. and Jesus

  1940. gives this

  1941. comedic

  1942. word picture

  1943. of someone

  1944. with a

  1945. big tree

  1946. sticking out

  1947. of their

  1948. eye

  1949. and saying

  1950. to someone

  1951. I think

  1952. there's a

  1953. little speck

  1954. somewhere in

  1955. your eye

  1956. you need to

  1957. help me

  1958. get it

  1959. out

  1960. there's

  1961. this big

  1962. tree

  1963. sticking out

  1964. of their

  1965. eye

  1966. we're meant

  1967. to see

  1968. the absurdity

  1969. of it

  1970. it's much

  1971. easier to

  1972. see the

  1973. sins of

  1974. others

  1975. than to

  1976. see your

  1977. own

  1978. sins

  1979. to be

  1980. strict

  1981. about

  1982. other

  1983. people's

  1984. sins

  1985. and

  1986. soft

  1987. and

  1988. your

  1989. own

  1990. beware

  1991. of

  1992. that

  1993. and the

  1994. last

  1995. thing

  1996. never

  1997. forget

  1998. whoever

  1999. it is

  2000. you meet

  2001. that Jesus

  2002. Christ came

  2003. into the

  2004. world

  2005. not to

  2006. condemn

  2007. the

  2008. world

  2009. but to

  2010. save

  2011. the

  2012. world

  2013. through

  2014. himself

  2015. John

  2016. 3

  2017. 17

  2018. I don't

  2019. mean you

  2020. don't

  2021. confront

  2022. people

  2023. with their

  2024. sin

  2025. I don't

  2026. mean that

  2027. I don't

  2028. mean you

  2029. don't tell

  2030. people that

  2031. the wages

  2032. of sin

  2033. is death

  2034. I don't

  2035. mean you

  2036. don't tell

  2037. people that

  2038. there is a

  2039. way that

  2040. seems right

  2041. to a man

  2042. that the

  2043. end thereof

  2044. is the

  2045. way of

  2046. death

  2047. I don't

  2048. mean any

  2049. of that

  2050. of course

  2051. you do

  2052. what people

  2053. hear from

  2054. your

  2055. lips

  2056. and see

  2057. from your

  2058. eyes

  2059. is very

  2060. important

  2061. Thomas

  2062. Boston

  2063. whom some

  2064. of you

  2065. will have

  2066. heard of

  2067. early

  2068. 18th

  2069. century

  2070. Scottish

  2071. minister

  2072. one of

  2073. the truly

  2074. great

  2075. men

  2076. produced

  2077. by the

  2078. Scottish

  2079. Church

  2080. he tells

  2081. us

  2082. that he

  2083. stumbled

  2084. across a

  2085. book one

  2086. day

  2087. that

  2088. transformed

  2089. his

  2090. ministry

  2091. and he

  2092. used a

  2093. word

  2094. that struck

  2095. me when

  2096. I first

  2097. read it

  2098. 40 years

  2099. ago

  2100. his

  2101. memoirs

  2102. of Thomas

  2103. Boston

  2104. he said

  2105. I read

  2106. this book

  2107. and it

  2108. brought

  2109. a certain

  2110. tincture

  2111. to my

  2112. ministry

  2113. you know

  2114. what a

  2115. tincture

  2116. is

  2117. you drop

  2118. a little

  2119. tincture

  2120. of say

  2121. iodine

  2122. into a

  2123. solution

  2124. and it

  2125. impregnates

  2126. and suffuses

  2127. the solution

  2128. and changes

  2129. its colour

  2130. he says

  2131. I read

  2132. a book

  2133. and it

  2134. brought

  2135. a new

  2136. dimension

  2137. a new

  2138. fragrance

  2139. a new

  2140. pervasiveness

  2141. to my

  2142. preaching

  2143. and it

  2144. was simply

  2145. this

  2146. he read

  2147. a book

  2148. that said

  2149. the gospel

  2150. of Jesus

  2151. Christ

  2152. is

  2153. principally

  2154. about a

  2155. God

  2156. who is

  2157. rich in

  2158. mercy

  2159. who is

  2160. slow to

  2161. anger

  2162. and who

  2163. abounds

  2164. in

  2165. kindness

  2166. and mercy

  2167. Moses

  2168. one day

  2169. prayed

  2170. to God

  2171. Exodus

  2172. 33

  2173. Lord

  2174. show me

  2175. your

  2176. glory

  2177. and in

  2178. chapter

  2179. 34

  2180. of

  2181. Exodus

  2182. the

  2183. Lord

  2184. hides

  2185. Moses

  2186. in the

  2187. cleft

  2188. of a

  2189. rock

  2190. and the

  2191. Lord

  2192. causes

  2193. all his

  2194. goodness

  2195. to pass

  2196. before him

  2197. it's a

  2198. theophany

  2199. and as

  2200. he passes

  2201. by Moses

  2202. he speaks

  2203. so what

  2204. is Moses

  2205. asked

  2206. show me

  2207. your

  2208. glory

  2209. and the

  2210. Lord

  2211. speaks

  2212. and he

  2213. says

  2214. you want

  2215. to see

  2216. my

  2217. glory

  2218. let me

  2219. tell you

  2220. about my

  2221. glory

  2222. what are

  2223. the first

  2224. words the

  2225. Lord

  2226. speaks

  2227. the

  2228. Lord

  2229. Yahweh

  2230. Yahweh

  2231. the living

  2232. one

  2233. rich in

  2234. mercy

  2235. and slow

  2236. to anger

  2237. yes he

  2238. will by

  2239. no means

  2240. clear the

  2241. guilty

  2242. absolutely

  2243. but what's

  2244. the first

  2245. thing

  2246. Yahweh

  2247. rich in

  2248. mercy

  2249. get your

  2250. head round

  2251. that

  2252. Moses

  2253. rich

  2254. in

  2255. mercy

  2256. so

  2257. an

  2258. adulterous

  2259. woman

  2260. who

  2261. discovered

  2262. unfathomable

  2263. grace

  2264. and a

  2265. merciful

  2266. savior

  2267. you

  2268. you
