  1. Please open your Bibles to John chapter 9. We're going to look at the whole chapter tonight.

    John 9 chapter mention

  2. John chapter 9. If you've not got a church Bible, they're just on the table as you come in.

    John 9 chapter mention

  3. When I went to summer camps as a young teenager, in the evening of those camps, we would sometimes play wide games on the big sports field in the dark, in pitch black.

  4. Everyone before the camp was told to bring a torch so that they could join in in the night time games. It was great fun.

  5. If somebody had been watching from far or you were able to put a drone up in the sky, it would have looked like a large dark space with little specks of light.

  6. Kids running around trying to spot each other or capture a flag or whatever the game was that evening.

  7. The torches made the game possible. They brought light to a place which was otherwise dark.

  8. On those evenings, the torch was your friend.

  9. But on the very same camp, I've got vivid memories of being woken up in the morning by a camp leader coming into the room and shining his torch into my eyes.

  10. Switching the ceiling lights on.

  11. I hated it.

  12. It was a rude way to wake up.

  13. At one moment you're asleep. The next moment someone is shining a great big light in your eyes.

  14. And your first instinct when someone does that is to what?

  15. It's to turn your face away, isn't it?

  16. Put your head in your pillow. Pull the top of the sleeping bag up over your face.

  17. On those mornings, the light was definitely not your friend.

  18. And I tell those two little anecdotes to illustrate the way that it is with light.

  19. Sometimes light is wonderful.

  20. Sometimes light can enable people to see.

  21. Something that they wouldn't have been able to see without it.

  22. But sometimes the light is blinding.

  23. Sometimes you want to turn away and run from the light.

  24. Sometimes light is not wonderful at all.

  25. When the light shines, one of those two things happens.

  26. People can see or people are made blind.

  27. And that's what John 9 is all about.

  28. John 9 shows us that is what it is like with Jesus.

  29. Jesus, the light of the world.

  30. And so chapter 9 is about Jesus and the blind man and the blind men.

  31. The chapter begins with the disciples' confusion.

  32. Can you see it in verse 1?

  33. They say,

  34. As he went along, he saw a man blind from birth.

  35. And his disciples asked him,

  36. Rabbi, which means teacher, who sinned?

  37. This man or his parents?

  38. And the disciples assumed, don't they,

  39. there's got to be a link with this man's blindness

  40. and some sin that he or his parents have committed.

  41. The theological position is really this.

  42. It's that God punishes sins with things like disability.

  43. It's a theological position that Jesus rejects,

  44. and for good reasons.

  45. Now, in general terms,

  46. we know that the Bible establishes, doesn't it,

  47. a very clear connection between suffering and sin.

  48. Sin has consequences.

  49. And in God's justice, sin leads to punishment.

  50. But at many points,

  51. the Bible resists the kind of connection

  52. that the disciples are making in verse 1.

  53. It was the same kind of connection, wasn't it,

  54. that Job's friends, do you remember them?

  55. In the book of Job.

  56. That when an individual suffers,

  57. it can only be that that individual

  58. or someone close to them

  59. has done something to deserve it.

  60. And the Bible says no to that.

  61. That is not the only explanation when you suffer.

  62. Sometimes suffering is indiscriminate.

  63. Sometimes the righteous suffer.

  64. Suffering does not just come to those who deserve it.

  65. And so in John 9,

  66. Jesus is really emphatic.

  67. God did not allow the suffering into this man's life

  68. because of some sin that he or his family had committed.

  69. He allowed this disability into his life

  70. for a different purpose altogether.

  71. Can you see it in verse 3?

  72. There's the purpose.

  73. So that the works of God might be displayed.

  74. In fact, that is precisely what we're about to see.

  75. In verse 4, Jesus makes it very clear

  76. that the works of God are going to be done

  77. in this man's life.

  78. They're going to be done by him.

  79. It's another, isn't it,

  80. very strong claim from Jesus

  81. to be equal with God.

  82. Who does God's work in the world?

  83. Jesus says, I do.

  84. And he adds,

  85. we must work while it is still day

  86. before the night comes.

  87. And then he makes this staggering claim.

  88. It's not a new claim.

  89. He's already said it before,

  90. but he reiterates it here

  91. at a very deliberate moment.

  92. He says, as long as I am in the world,

  93. I am the light of the world.

  94. He's claiming to be the one

  95. who shines God's salvation light

  96. upon the world.

  97. He is the one who reveals God's glory,

  98. who leads God's people,

  99. who shows them the way.

  100. He's the one, he says,

  101. who holds the answer to the world's darkness.

  102. The darkness of sin and death.

  103. It's a very big claim.

  104. And what we see here is that

  105. Jesus immediately takes steps

  106. to validate that claim.

  107. His staggering words about himself

  108. are instantly followed by a staggering sign.

  109. He meets a man born blind.

  110. And then he spits on the ground

  111. to make some mud.

  112. And then he rubs the mud in the man's eyes.

  113. And he tells him,

  114. go and wash it off in the pool of Siloam.

  115. And when the man does that,

  116. does what Jesus says,

  117. the man begins to see.

  118. He'd been blind from birth

  119. his whole life up to this point.

  120. His whole life had been filled with darkness.

  121. But as that man walked home

  122. from the pool of Siloam,

  123. for the first time in his life,

  124. this man saw where he was placing his feet.

  125. He saw green leaves on the tree.

  126. He saw the distant horizon.

  127. He saw the looks on people's face.

  128. He saw it all.

  129. He saw everything.

  130. He must have been reeling with surprise

  131. and gratitude and happiness.

  132. And what is more,

  133. he wasn't just seeing people for the first time.

  134. The people were seeing him

  135. and coming to terms with it.

  136. The public's reaction is varied.

  137. His neighbours see him walking around

  138. and think,

  139. he looks like the one who used to sit

  140. by the road begging.

  141. Do you remember him?

  142. Some thought it was him.

  143. Others couldn't believe their eyes

  144. and they were convinced

  145. it must be someone else.

  146. He must have a twin or something.

  147. It must be someone that looked like him.

  148. But the blind man

  149. says, no, it's really me.

  150. And he tells them what happened.

  151. All that Jesus has said and done to heal him.

  152. And the people wanted to see this Jesus

  153. who'd done this.

  154. But the formerly blind man

  155. didn't know where Jesus was.

  156. So the people take him to the Pharisees

  157. to get their verdict

  158. on what's just happened

  159. in this most astonishing event.

  160. Look at verse 13.

  161. And they brought to the Pharisees

  162. the man who'd formerly been blind.

  163. Now it was a Sabbath day

  164. when Jesus made the mud

  165. and opened his eyes.

  166. So the Pharisees again asked him

  167. how he'd received his sight.

  168. And he said to them,

  169. he put mud on my eyes

  170. and I washed and I see.

  171. Some of the Pharisees said,

  172. this man is not from God

  173. for he does not keep the Sabbath.

  174. You notice,

  175. and I think it's really interesting

  176. that up to this point,

  177. John hasn't told us

  178. when this miracle took place.

  179. He hadn't told us

  180. that it took place on the Sabbath

  181. and that is because

  182. it wasn't relevant until now.

  183. The day on which this occurred

  184. was only important to the Pharisees.

  185. and they are outraged

  186. because of what Jesus has done

  187. by healing this man on that day.

  188. I hope you never get used to the fact

  189. that they are more concerned

  190. with their distorted interpretation

  191. of God's law

  192. than they are with the man's new sight.

  193. It's tragic, isn't it,

  194. to say the least.

  195. And because they are obsessed

  196. with the Sabbath rule,

  197. they are unable to see past this

  198. to who Jesus must be.

  199. Some of them think

  200. that obedience to their rules

  201. is a better indication

  202. of divine origin

  203. than a display of power.

  204. There are others

  205. who are not so sure.

  206. They think this power suggests

  207. that he must come from God.

  208. So verse 16 tells us,

  209. can you see that?

  210. They were divided

  211. because of Jesus.

  212. Well, we've seen that before.

  213. So again,

  214. they ask the blind man

  215. what he thinks.

  216. And he says

  217. that he thinks

  218. Jesus must be a prophet.

  219. The Pharisees,

  220. they display their stubborn

  221. characteristic,

  222. stubbornness.

  223. Once more, verse 18,

  224. they say,

  225. the Jews did not believe

  226. that he'd been born blind

  227. and he'd received sight.

  228. So they call for his mom and dad.

  229. And they ask mom and dad

  230. to explain what's happened.

  231. And the parents are very nervous.

  232. Can you pick that up?

  233. And they confirm,

  234. this is our son

  235. who was born blind

  236. and they confirm

  237. that he can now see.

  238. They admit that,

  239. but they hedge their bets

  240. when it comes to explaining

  241. how it happened.

  242. They simply

  243. tell the Pharisees,

  244. well,

  245. let him speak for himself.

  246. Verse 22,

  247. his parents said these things

  248. because they feared the Jews

  249. for the Jews

  250. had already agreed

  251. that if anyone

  252. should confess Jesus

  253. to be the Christ,

  254. he was to be put out

  255. of the synagogue.

  256. That's why his parents said,

  257. well, he's of age,

  258. ask him.

  259. Talk about having

  260. your mind made up.

  261. The Jews,

  262. it seems,

  263. were so stubborn

  264. in their unwillingness

  265. to hear Jesus

  266. that they've already decided

  267. to persecute,

  268. to exclude anyone

  269. who accepted Jesus

  270. as the Messiah.

  271. And they make

  272. their decision known.

  273. So resolute

  274. was their opposition

  275. to Jesus

  276. that people are already

  277. living in fear

  278. of coming to a conclusion

  279. about Jesus,

  280. which would be unpopular

  281. with the Pharisees.

  282. Well,

  283. having been sidestepped

  284. by the parents,

  285. the Pharisees

  286. called the man back

  287. for even more questions.

  288. Amazingly,

  289. in verse 24,

  290. they equate giving glory

  291. to God

  292. with admitting

  293. that Jesus is evil.

  294. The irony of verse 24

  295. is too thick for words.

  296. The very opposite

  297. is the truth.

  298. By their refusal

  299. to acknowledge Jesus

  300. for who he really was,

  301. they are the ones

  302. that are refusing

  303. to give God glory.

  304. And the blind man's response

  305. cuts right to the heart

  306. of the matter.

  307. It's almost certainly

  308. the high point

  309. of the chapter.

  310. Listen again

  311. to the simplicity

  312. with which he speaks.

  313. He replied,

  314. whether he is a sinner,

  315. I do not know.

  316. One thing I do know,

  317. that though I was blind,

  318. I now see.

  319. this is what he is saying,

  320. he is saying,

  321. you can take your

  322. theological jargon

  323. and your animosity

  324. to Jesus

  325. and you can shove it.

  326. what I know is this,

  327. I used to be blind,

  328. but now I see.

  329. Don't you see

  330. what's happened here?

  331. I don't know anyone else,

  332. he says,

  333. who's got the power

  334. to do this.

  335. No one in my whole life

  336. has been able to help me

  337. until I met this guy.

  338. You're missing the obvious.

  339. This guy has the power

  340. to give sight to the blind.

  341. I can see,

  342. I can see.

  343. The tragedy is

  344. that they can't.

  345. He used to be

  346. a blind man

  347. and now they are

  348. the blind man.

  349. Verse 26,

  350. we discover

  351. that they haven't changed

  352. their tune at all.

  353. They asked him,

  354. what did he do?

  355. How did he open your eyes?

  356. He answered,

  357. I've told you already

  358. and you didn't listen.

  359. Why do you want

  360. to hear it again?

  361. Do you also want

  362. to become his disciple?

  363. You can hear his exasperation

  364. with these Pharisees growing.

  365. Now he's gone and done it.

  366. He may have just

  367. pushed them over the edge.

  368. He's caused the greatest

  369. offence

  370. that he could have

  371. possibly caused.

  372. It's as if

  373. the blind man,

  374. the former blind man

  375. is saying,

  376. secretly,

  377. you like him,

  378. don't you?

  379. There's no other

  380. explanation

  381. for your obsession

  382. with him.

  383. You love him.

  384. You want to follow him,

  385. don't you?

  386. And he's toying

  387. with them now.

  388. You've got to love

  389. this man.

  390. And so the Pharisees'

  391. outrage becomes

  392. the Pharisees' fury

  393. and they turn

  394. on the healed man

  395. and they revile him

  396. saying,

  397. verse 28,

  398. you are his disciples

  399. but we are

  400. the disciples

  401. of

  402. Moses.

  403. We know that

  404. God has spoken

  405. to Moses

  406. but as for this man

  407. we don't know

  408. where he comes from.

  409. It's fascinating,

  410. isn't it?

  411. Who do they choose

  412. to identify with?

  413. Moses.

  414. They don't say God.

  415. Tellingly,

  416. they choose to line up

  417. behind the one

  418. who has given them

  419. the law.

  420. But their fury

  421. only exasperates

  422. the healed man

  423. further

  424. and he's not going

  425. to take it lying down.

  426. Verse 30,

  427. why this is

  428. an amazing thing.

  429. You do not know

  430. where he comes from

  431. and yet he opened

  432. my eyes.

  433. We know that God

  434. does not listen

  435. to sinners

  436. but if anyone

  437. is a worshipper of God

  438. and does his will

  439. God listens to him.

  440. Never since the world

  441. begun has it been

  442. feared that anyone

  443. opened the eyes

  444. of a man born blind.

  445. If this man

  446. were not from God

  447. he could do

  448. nothing.

  449. That's a pretty

  450. penetrating

  451. expose

  452. of the Pharisees'

  453. blindness.

  454. but blind

  455. to the bitter end

  456. the Pharisees

  457. of the last word.

  458. Verse 34,

  459. you were born

  460. in utter sin.

  461. You were born

  462. in utter sin

  463. and you

  464. would teach us.

  465. How dare you

  466. lecture us.

  467. They throw him out.

  468. In actual fact

  469. they don't have

  470. the last words

  471. do they?

  472. Not as far as

  473. the apostle John

  474. is concerned.

  475. The last word

  476. in the chapter

  477. belongs to Jesus

  478. himself.

  479. And Jesus

  480. re-enters the

  481. narrative in

  482. verse 37

  483. where he

  484. seeks out

  485. the man

  486. that he'd

  487. healed

  488. and he

  489. asks him

  490. if he

  491. believes in

  492. the son

  493. of man.

  494. It's Jesus'

  495. most common

  496. way of

  497. referring to

  498. himself.

  499. It's from

  500. Daniel chapter 7.

    Daniel 7 chapter mention

  501. the man

  502. responds

  503. by saying

  504. that he

  505. wants to

  506. believe in

  507. the son

  508. of man

  509. if only

  510. he knew

  511. who he

  512. was.

  513. Listen to

  514. what Jesus

  515. says.

  516. Verse 37,

  517. you have

  518. seen him

  519. and it is

  520. he who is

  521. speaking to

  522. you.

  523. I hope

  524. you didn't

  525. miss the

  526. most significant

  527. of all the

  528. words in

  529. verse 37.

  530. Just look

  531. down.

  532. Can you

  533. spot the

  534. most

  535. significant

  536. word?

  537. What's

  538. the most

  539. significant

  540. word there?

  541. Seen.

  542. Seen.

  543. I

  544. suspect the

  545. healed man

  546. didn't miss

  547. the significance

  548. of that.

  549. Jesus

  550. said to

  551. him,

  552. you are

  553. looking at

  554. him.

  555. Up until

  556. a few

  557. hours ago

  558. this man

  559. couldn't

  560. look at

  561. anyone

  562. or

  563. anything

  564. but now

  565. he's

  566. looking at

  567. the son

  568. of man.

  569. Up until

  570. a few

  571. hours ago

  572. this man

  573. had never

  574. seen anything

  575. in his

  576. entire life

  577. and now

  578. he is

  579. seeing the

  580. Christ,

  581. God's

  582. king.

  583. man.

  584. And John

  585. to prove

  586. that this

  587. man

  588. can see

  589. not only

  590. physically

  591. but

  592. spiritually

  593. tells us

  594. what he

  595. did next.

  596. And what

  597. he did

  598. next tells

  599. you and

  600. I

  601. emphatically

  602. and beyond

  603. doubt that

  604. this man

  605. could really

  606. see who

  607. Jesus was.

  608. Verse 38,

  609. then the

  610. man said

  611. Lord I

  612. believe

  613. and he

  614. worshipped

  615. him.

  616. The two

  617. indispensables

  618. tonight,

  619. faith and

  620. worship.

  621. Faith and

  622. worship,

  623. they are all

  624. that Jesus

  625. requires

  626. and they

  627. are all that

  628. Jesus deserves

  629. and he

  630. deserves them

  631. because they

  632. are what God

  633. himself deserves,

  634. faith and

  635. worship.

  636. And this

  637. guy gets

  638. it,

  639. he sees

  640. it.

  641. And so

  642. he bows

  643. down in

  644. reverence

  645. and awe

  646. and humble

  647. gratitude

  648. and so

  649. do all

  650. people who

  651. see Jesus

  652. properly.

  653. He

  654. worships

  655. Jesus.

  656. Then Jesus

  657. makes it

  658. very explicit,

  659. he speaks of

  660. his authority

  661. to judge,

  662. he reveals

  663. what it

  664. means for

  665. him to

  666. be the

  667. light of

  668. the world.

  669. He says

  670. some will

  671. see and

  672. some will

  673. be blinded.

  674. Verse 39,

  675. for judgment,

  676. I came into

  677. this world,

  678. that those

  679. who do not

  680. see may

  681. see and

  682. those who

  683. see may

  684. become blind.

  685. Before

  686. Jesus is

  687. a blind

  688. man who

  689. now sees.

  690. man who

  691. see and

  692. that man

  693. has just

  694. come from

  695. a group

  696. of men

  697. who think

  698. that they

  699. can see

  700. but they're

  701. spiritually

  702. blind.

  703. The Pharisees

  704. have got a

  705. lot to say

  706. about Jesus

  707. in this

  708. chapter but

  709. all of it

  710. has been

  711. wrong.

  712. And thus

  713. they've

  714. confirmed

  715. their

  716. darkness.

  717. They've

  718. confirmed the

  719. darkness that

  720. has engulfed

  721. their minds.

  722. Some Pharisees

  723. in verse 40

  724. sense that

  725. Jesus might

  726. be talking

  727. about them.

  728. So they

  729. ask,

  730. do you

  731. think we're

  732. blind?

  733. And Jesus'

  734. spine tingling

  735. reply comes

  736. in verse 41.

  737. Jesus said,

  738. if you were

  739. blind you'd

  740. have no guilt

  741. but now

  742. that you

  743. see we

  744. see your

  745. guilt remains.

  746. And what I

  747. think Jesus

  748. is saying

  749. there is

  750. if they

  751. really were

  752. incapable of

  753. spiritual insight

  754. for some

  755. reason then

  756. their blindness

  757. would come

  758. without guilt.

  759. But that's

  760. not the

  761. situation.

  762. They are

  763. not incapable

  764. of spiritual

  765. sight.

  766. They are

  767. just stubborn

  768. in their

  769. rejection

  770. aren't they?

  771. They are

  772. hard hearted

  773. and so they

  774. are guilty.

  775. That's what

  776. Jesus says.

  777. And so

  778. these words

  779. from Jesus'

  780. lips should

  781. have been

  782. frightening for

  783. them.

  784. They were

  785. in danger

  786. of dying

  787. in their

  788. sins as

  789. we've

  790. heard.

  791. They were

  792. in danger

  793. of God's

  794. wrath

  795. remaining

  796. upon

  797. them.

  798. They

  799. refused

  800. to come

  801. to Jesus

  802. to have

  803. life.

  804. So they

  805. were in

  806. great danger

  807. of that

  808. same

  809. Jesus

  810. pronouncing

  811. the sentence

  812. of death

  813. upon them.

  814. John 9

  815. is a very

  816. vivid

  817. explanation

  818. of what

  819. is going

  820. on

  821. throughout

  822. Jesus'

  823. ministry.

  824. Jesus

  825. is the

  826. light of

  827. the world

  828. and when

  829. the light

  830. shines

  831. some are

  832. blinded

  833. by it

  834. but others

  835. see.

  836. some are

  837. like what

  838. I was

  839. like on

  840. that camp

  841. when the

  842. leader

  843. flicked his

  844. torch into

  845. my eyes

  846. and put

  847. the ceiling

  848. light on.

  849. They turn

  850. away from

  851. the light.

  852. They refuse

  853. to see

  854. the light

  855. but others

  856. are like

  857. those

  858. delighted

  859. young boys

  860. running

  861. around

  862. with

  863. abandon

  864. and confidence

  865. in the

  866. middle of a

  867. dark field

  868. because they've

  869. got a torch

  870. light to see

  871. by and the

  872. light is their

  873. friend.

  874. some are

  875. blinded by

  876. the light

  877. others

  878. see

  879. by it.

  880. And in

  881. particular here

  882. it's the

  883. Pharisees

  884. who are

  885. blind.

  886. It's been a

  887. significant

  888. theme throughout

  889. John's

  890. Gospel.

  891. In their

  892. blindness

  893. they oppose

  894. Jesus

  895. and they

  896. oppose

  897. others who

  898. follow

  899. Jesus

  900. and they

  901. look to

  902. attack

  903. Jesus.

  904. They're

  905. angry

  906. with

  907. Jesus.

  908. They

  909. want to

  910. kill

  911. Jesus.

  912. All these

  913. things are

  914. you can see

  915. from a very

  916. surface reading

  917. of John's

  918. Gospel.

  919. But Jesus

  920. offers a

  921. diagnosis of

  922. the Pharisees

  923. blindness that

  924. goes beneath

  925. the surface.

  926. Do you

  927. remember in

  928. John 8

  929. Jesus tells

  930. us that they

  931. are destined

  932. to die in

  933. their sins.

  934. Jesus tells

  935. us that they

  936. are slaves

  937. to sin,

  938. that they're

  939. children of

  940. the devil

  941. himself and

  942. their blindness

  943. places them in

  944. a desperate

  945. situation before

  946. God.

  947. and even

  948. more desperate

  949. is that they

  950. are oblivious

  951. to it.

  952. These

  953. people,

  954. they think

  955. they're fine

  956. with God,

  957. they think

  958. that they're

  959. alright and

  960. Jesus is a

  961. heretic.

  962. They think

  963. that all is

  964. well for

  965. them spiritually

  966. but Jesus

  967. says they're

  968. in serious

  969. trouble and

  970. they can't

  971. see it.

  972. And of

  973. course that's

  974. what blindness

  975. is and that

  976. is what blindness

  977. is today too.

  978. It is thinking

  979. we're okay

  980. spiritually when

  981. really you're

  982. in big trouble.

  983. It is believing

  984. that you're fine

  985. with God when

  986. in fact you're

  987. not fine with

  988. God at all.

  989. It is being

  990. willing to

  991. dismiss Jesus

  992. as wrong

  993. or more

  994. likely

  995. unimportant

  996. when in the

  997. end he will

  998. be the one

  999. who could

  1000. dismiss you.

  1001. And we are

  1002. surrounded by

  1003. this.

  1004. You are

  1005. surrounded by

  1006. it when

  1007. you go

  1008. to work

  1009. and when

  1010. you go

  1011. to school

  1012. and you

  1013. are surrounded

  1014. by it when

  1015. you spend

  1016. time with

  1017. your friends

  1018. and some

  1019. of us are

  1020. surrounded by

  1021. it in our

  1022. families and

  1023. if you went

  1024. into Ealing

  1025. tonight and

  1026. you went

  1027. to the pub

  1028. you'd be

  1029. surrounded

  1030. by that

  1031. too.

  1032. This city

  1033. is full of

  1034. people who

  1035. are spiritually

  1036. blind.

  1037. people who

  1038. have dismissed

  1039. Jesus and

  1040. think that

  1041. they have no

  1042. spiritual

  1043. problem.

  1044. Who believe

  1045. that things

  1046. are fine

  1047. between them

  1048. and God

  1049. and yet the

  1050. truth is

  1051. things are

  1052. not fine

  1053. between them

  1054. and God.

  1055. And Jesus

  1056. pulls no

  1057. punches does

  1058. he?

  1059. He says that

  1060. they are

  1061. destined to

  1062. die in

  1063. their sins

  1064. God's wrath

  1065. remains on

  1066. them they

  1067. are children

  1068. of the devil

  1069. they are in

  1070. the darkness

  1071. and on the

  1072. light.

  1073. So this

  1074. chapter reminds

  1075. you and I

  1076. of a great

  1077. reality about

  1078. the world

  1079. in which we

  1080. live.

  1081. And it

  1082. reminds us

  1083. about a

  1084. truth that

  1085. ought to

  1086. grieve us

  1087. and rest

  1088. heavily upon

  1089. us.

  1090. That Jesus

  1091. is the

  1092. world's

  1093. light and

  1094. yet so

  1095. many around

  1096. us are

  1097. blind and

  1098. in tragic

  1099. danger.

  1100. And so

  1101. should we

  1102. not live

  1103. rightly before

  1104. their eyes

  1105. that they

  1106. might see

  1107. the difference?

  1108. Should we

  1109. not explain

  1110. our hope

  1111. to them

  1112. whenever

  1113. we're given

  1114. an opportunity

  1115. and should

  1116. we

  1117. not

  1118. above

  1119. all

  1120. pray for

  1121. them.

  1122. And pray

  1123. earnestly

  1124. for them

  1125. because only

  1126. God can

  1127. open their

  1128. eyes.

  1129. Only God

  1130. can turn

  1131. hard hearts

  1132. into soft

  1133. hearts.

  1134. Only God

  1135. can deliver

  1136. people from

  1137. spiritual

  1138. blindness.

  1139. In the

  1140. end our

  1141. ministries

  1142. can't do

  1143. it.

  1144. Can they

  1145. little stars

  1146. can't do

  1147. it.

  1148. Language

  1149. class

  1150. can't do

  1151. it.

  1152. Bible

  1153. studies

  1154. can't do

  1155. it.

  1156. Club

  1157. 16

  1158. Ignite

  1159. can't

  1160. do

  1161. it.

  1162. Courses

  1163. can't

  1164. do it.

  1165. Getting

  1166. better

  1167. publicity

  1168. and a

  1169. cracking

  1170. website

  1171. can't

  1172. do it.

  1173. But God

  1174. can.

  1175. God

  1176. wonderfully

  1177. uses

  1178. those

  1179. things.

  1180. But at

  1181. the end

  1182. of the

  1183. day our

  1184. family and

  1185. our

  1186. friends,

  1187. our

  1188. colleagues

  1189. and our

  1190. neighbours,

  1191. they need

  1192. a miracle.

  1193. They need

  1194. the God

  1195. of all

  1196. the universe

  1197. to send

  1198. his

  1199. spirit

  1200. to open

  1201. blind

  1202. eyes.

  1203. And they

  1204. need us

  1205. to plead

  1206. with God

  1207. to do

  1208. that.

  1209. To give

  1210. them sight

  1211. in the

  1212. place of

  1213. blindness.

  1214. And so

  1215. this chapter

  1216. is a

  1217. reminder to

  1218. you and

  1219. I of

  1220. the burden

  1221. to pray

  1222. for the

  1223. blind.

  1224. And I

  1225. hope it

  1226. reminds you

  1227. of that

  1228. burden

  1229. too.

  1230. And I

  1231. continue to

  1232. hope and

  1233. pray that

  1234. God would

  1235. make great

  1236. distress for

  1237. the spiritually

  1238. blind in

  1239. Mark of

  1240. IPC.

  1241. that an

  1242. earnest

  1243. prayerfulness

  1244. for the

  1245. lost

  1246. would be

  1247. one of

  1248. the things

  1249. that defines

  1250. us as a

  1251. church.

  1252. And this

  1253. chapter reminds

  1254. us,

  1255. doesn't it,

  1256. of how

  1257. important that

  1258. is,

  1259. but the

  1260. chapter,

  1261. as I

  1262. finish,

  1263. reminds us

  1264. of something

  1265. else as

  1266. well.

  1267. Something that

  1268. comes to you

  1269. and I

  1270. tonight,

  1271. not as a

  1272. burden

  1273. at all,

  1274. but as a

  1275. great delight.

  1276. because the

  1277. chapter reminds

  1278. me that I

  1279. am like this

  1280. healed man.

  1281. Because by

  1282. his mercy,

  1283. God has

  1284. granted me

  1285. this miracle

  1286. that they

  1287. really need

  1288. if they are

  1289. to see,

  1290. and I

  1291. can tonight.

  1292. I can see

  1293. that Jesus

  1294. really is

  1295. who he says

  1296. he is.

  1297. I can see

  1298. that Jesus

  1299. deserves to

  1300. be worshipped.

  1301. I can see

  1302. that he has

  1303. the power

  1304. to perform

  1305. great miracles.

  1306. Because he

  1307. really has

  1308. come from

  1309. God,

  1310. and he

  1311. really is

  1312. equal with

  1313. God,

  1314. and greater

  1315. by far

  1316. than being

  1317. able to

  1318. see the

  1319. steps that

  1320. I take,

  1321. or the

  1322. green leaves

  1323. on the

  1324. trees,

  1325. or the

  1326. far horizons,

  1327. or the

  1328. looks on

  1329. people's

  1330. faces,

  1331. greater

  1332. by far

  1333. is the

  1334. ability

  1335. to see

  1336. Jesus

  1337. for who

  1338. he really

  1339. is.

  1340. And having

  1341. come to

  1342. see him

  1343. properly,

  1344. I would

  1345. rather,

  1346. honestly,

  1347. be physically

  1348. blind than

  1349. to lose

  1350. this sight,

  1351. wouldn't

  1352. you?

  1353. this is

  1354. the 2020

  1355. vision that

  1356. really

  1357. matters.

  1358. I can

  1359. see.

  1360. It's not

  1361. because I'm

  1362. smarter or

  1363. more intuitive

  1364. than anyone

  1365. else,

  1366. it is because

  1367. Jesus,

  1368. the light of

  1369. the world,

  1370. has opened

  1371. my eyes.

  1372. And if

  1373. you tonight,

  1374. like me,

  1375. can see

  1376. Jesus clearly,

  1377. if you,

  1378. like me,

  1379. know that

  1380. he is worthy

  1381. of our

  1382. faith,

  1383. and worthy

  1384. of our

  1385. worship,

  1386. and if

  1387. you,

  1388. like me,

  1389. would rather

  1390. see him

  1391. than anything

  1392. else,

  1393. it is only

  1394. because God

  1395. has been

  1396. merciful to

  1397. you.

  1398. Jesus,

  1399. the light

  1400. of the

  1401. world,

  1402. has opened

  1403. your eyes.

  1404. Amazing

  1405. grace,

  1406. how sweet

  1407. the sound,

  1408. that saved

  1409. a wretch

  1410. like me.

  1411. I once

  1412. was lost,

  1413. but now

  1414. I'm found,

  1415. was blind,

  1416. but now

  1417. I see.

  1418. With

  1419. incredible

  1420. gratitude,

  1421. we are

  1422. like a

  1423. crowd of

  1424. boys running

  1425. around on

  1426. a sports

  1427. field,

  1428. surrendered

  1429. to the

  1430. sheer pleasure

  1431. of being

  1432. able to

  1433. see,

  1434. because of

  1435. the light

  1436. that is in

  1437. our hands,

  1438. and not

  1439. only in

  1440. our hands,

  1441. but in

  1442. our hearts,

  1443. with

  1444. humble

  1445. awe,

  1446. we are

  1447. like that

  1448. man,

  1449. I trust,

  1450. that man

  1451. who fell

  1452. at Jesus'

  1453. feet and

  1454. worshipped,

  1455. and we,

  1456. like him,

  1457. can say

  1458. tonight,

  1459. can't we,

  1460. look,

  1461. there are

  1462. many things,

  1463. many things

  1464. in this

  1465. life I

  1466. don't

  1467. understand,

  1468. and there

  1469. is lots

  1470. about God

  1471. and his

  1472. ways that

  1473. I still

  1474. don't know,

  1475. but there's

  1476. one thing

  1477. I do

  1478. know,

  1479. I was

  1480. blind,

  1481. but now

  1482. I see,

  1483. let's pray.
