  1. I was speaking at some meetings yesterday and what happened is what always happens when I go to speak at a meeting.

  2. ! I finished speaking, singing the final hymn, I go and stand somewhere, people come and talk to me.

  3. And one of the first questions I'm asked is, Levy, it's a Jewish name, are you Jewish? Are you Jewish?

  4. And the answer to that question is I don't really know, yes and no. The Levy family tree is a bit of a mystery.

  5. We don't really know where the kind of Jewishness comes from but it's certainly there at some point.

  6. And I wonder if you've ever done any work on your family tree.

  7. And lots of us are interested in our ancestors, aren't we?

  8. We like to know the stories of our family.

  9. We like to know where does our name come from.

  10. And Acts chapter 11 verse 26 tells us that it was in the city of Antioch in the middle of the first century AD that the name Christian was first used.

    Acts 11:26

  11. So Acts chapter 11, here is a piece of our heritage.

    Acts 11 chapter mention

  12. That word is used, isn't it, all over the world today.

  13. And it's used for those who follow Jesus Christ.

  14. We are Christians and we meet with Christians all across the globe today.

  15. And that name is traceable back to a certain time and a certain place in Acts chapter 11.

    Acts 11 chapter mention

  16. And so this is a chapter, Acts 11, that should have some historical significance for us.

  17. But I want to suggest to you it has far more significance than that.

  18. Because this chapter not only tells us where our name comes from, but it tells us where our faith comes from.

  19. And where our life comes from as Christians.

  20. And it gives us vocabulary to talk about.

  21. Vocabulary is so important, isn't it?

  22. How you speak about something.

  23. What you describe something as.

  24. And we're going to think about what vocabulary this chapter leaves us with this morning.

  25. The chapter is in two halves.

  26. And then I want us to look at the major theme and then trace out the implications.

  27. So verses 1 to 18 of Acts chapter 11.

    Acts 11 chapter mention

  28. Is the work of God in Peter.

  29. Chapter 10, do you remember that?

  30. It tells us the story of Cornelius coming to faith in Jesus Christ.

  31. And receiving the spirit of God along with his whole household.

  32. And this was significant precisely because Cornelius was a Gentile, a non-Jew.

  33. He wasn't a Jew.

  34. And so chapter 10 is like a Gentile Pentecost.

  35. It's like a rerun of Acts chapter 2.

    Acts 2 chapter mention

  36. Because the receiving of God's spirit in Acts chapter 10 marks the beginning of the next stage of Jesus' mission.

    Acts 10 chapter mention

  37. The gospel is not only going to be for Jerusalem and Judea.

  38. But through Samaria.

  39. And as we get to the ends of the Acts, we'll see it goes out to the ends of the earth.

  40. And chapter 10 though is not the story just of one conversion, is it?

  41. But it is two conversions.

  42. It is the story of how Peter, the apostle, his mind was changed.

  43. It was changed in terms of how a Jew like him was meant to relate to a Gentile like Cornelius.

  44. Previously, Peter wouldn't associate with Gentiles.

  45. Wouldn't go into their homes.

  46. Wouldn't eat with them.

  47. But chapter 10 tells us that God persuaded Peter.

  48. And he started to live and think differently.

  49. Because the gospel, the good news of the Lord Jesus, was being received by the Gentiles.

  50. And since they were receiving the spirit of God as well, the Jews needed to receive the Gentiles.

  51. And so, the first half of chapter 11, Peter retells the story.

  52. And he does so for a specific reason.

  53. Because his actions were now being criticized by the Jewish leaders in Jerusalem.

  54. Do you remember when Peter first saw that vision of a sheet coming down from heaven?

  55. And all sorts of animals on it.

  56. He's told, get up, eat the unclean animals.

  57. And his response was, surely not, Lord.

  58. Well, that is exactly how the Jewish leaders in Jerusalem are reacting to him.

  59. You're eating with uncircumcised Gentiles in their homes.

  60. Surely not, Peter.

  61. Listen again to chapter 11, verse 1.

  62. Now, the apostles and the brothers who were throughout Judea

  63. heard that the Gentiles had received the word of God.

  64. So, when Peter went up to Jerusalem, the circumcision party criticized him.

  65. saying, you went to uncircumcised men and ate with them.

  66. Circumcision party is a group of people.

  67. It's not an event.

  68. Alright?

  69. It's a far better joke than I was giving credit for.

  70. It's a terrible party to go to.

  71. Right.

  72. At this point, Peter sympathizes, doesn't he, with his critics.

  73. Completely.

  74. And when they articulate their criticism of him,

  75. it's exactly where he was a short time before.

  76. His mindset has changed.

  77. They're still there.

  78. Their mindset was his mindset until very recently.

  79. So, he knows that he needs to explain to them how his mindset's changed.

  80. That's exactly what he does.

  81. Look at verse 4.

  82. Peter began and he explained to them in order.

  83. He told them about the threefold vision that he had.

  84. And then the three men from Caesarea.

  85. And then he told them about the meeting he had with Cornelius.

  86. And the coming of the Spirit to the Gentile household.

  87. And all that text that we have from verses 5 to 15

  88. is really a repetition of what chapter 10 is.

  89. Except this time it's from Peter's perspective.

  90. But when we get to verse 16, there's a little bit of new information.

  91. He says,

  92. I remembered the word of the Lord, the Lord Jesus.

  93. How he said,

  94. John the Baptist baptized with water,

  95. but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.

  96. And so, Peter is saying,

  97. what happened in chapter 10

  98. was in fulfillment of what Jesus had predicted.

  99. He's come to see that the baptism that matters most

  100. is not the baptism with water,

  101. but the baptism of the Holy Spirit.

  102. Which God performs.

  103. And water baptism is a sign

  104. of that Holy Spirit baptism

  105. that God brings to every believer.

  106. It was the coming of the Spirit

  107. to these Gentiles that really clinched it for Peter.

  108. And now he's hoping that

  109. that will clinch it for his critics too.

  110. So in verse 17,

  111. he says this,

  112. if then God gave the same gift to them

  113. as he gave to us

  114. when we believed in the Lord Jesus Christ,

  115. who am I to stand in God's way?

  116. Do you get Peter's logic?

  117. Right, he's saying,

  118. if the Spirit of God

  119. has come upon these people,

  120. then the whole thing

  121. is from God

  122. and who am I to object to it?

  123. And when Peter says that,

  124. it's actually pretty pointed,

  125. isn't it?

  126. Because he's not just saying,

  127. is he,

  128. who am I to stand in God's way?

  129. He's speaking to his fellow leaders in Jerusalem

  130. and he's saying,

  131. who are you to stand in God's way?

  132. That's his explanation

  133. to those who just couldn't fathom

  134. that he started eating with Gentiles.

  135. He says,

  136. God has showed him

  137. that he needed to stop

  138. keeping his distance from the Gentiles

  139. and so does every other Jewish believer.

  140. And of course,

  141. Peter's explanation

  142. has exactly the effect

  143. that he desired.

  144. Verse 18,

  145. and when they heard this,

  146. they had no further objections.

  147. They praised God,

  148. saying,

  149. so then,

  150. even Gentiles,

  151. God has granted repentance

  152. that leads to life.

  153. This is the fruit

  154. of Peter's explanation.

  155. The other Jewish leaders,

  156. they are persuaded

  157. that God has granted life

  158. to the Gentiles through repentance

  159. and there's no room

  160. for any Jewish person

  161. to prevent them

  162. from being welcomed

  163. as part of the family of God.

  164. And not only did they accept

  165. this new conviction,

  166. they praised God

  167. for what he had done.

  168. As one writer puts it,

  169. their criticism ceased

  170. and their worship began.

  171. That's the first half of the chapter

  172. where we see the work of God in Peter

  173. and it becomes the work of God

  174. right the way through

  175. the Jerusalem elders.

  176. But then in the second half

  177. of the chapter,

  178. the focus shifts

  179. to the work of God

  180. in Antioch.

  181. The work of God

  182. in Antioch.

  183. It's a largely Gentile city

  184. and in order to set the scene

  185. for what happens in Antioch,

  186. Luke first has to go back

  187. to tell us how the gospel

  188. got there in the first place.

  189. Do you remember

  190. the martyrdom of Stephen?

  191. It's recorded in chapter 7

  192. and what followed

  193. in chapter 8 verse 1

  194. is we're told that

  195. as a result of Stephen's death,

  196. the believers are scattered.

  197. They're terrified.

  198. They run.

  199. They're scattered all over

  200. Judea and Samaria.

  201. They fled

  202. and they escaped from Jerusalem

  203. and they ended up

  204. in other places

  205. and what did they do

  206. when they got there?

  207. They shared the gospel of Jesus

  208. with people who hadn't heard yet.

  209. Once again,

  210. can you see

  211. the sovereign wisdom of God

  212. that he even uses

  213. the persecution

  214. of his people

  215. to spread the news

  216. of the Lord Jesus?

  217. What Luke tells us here

  218. is that these scattered believers

  219. turned up in cities

  220. as far away as Antioch

  221. and these scattered believers

  222. told other Jews

  223. about the Lord Jesus

  224. and some of them

  225. even started telling

  226. Greek people

  227. about the Lord Jesus.

  228. So verse 19,

  229. can you look there?

  230. Now,

  231. those who were scattered

  232. because of the persecution

  233. that arose over Stephen

  234. travelled as far as Phoenicia

  235. and Cyprus

  236. and Antioch

  237. speaking the word

  238. to no one except Jews

  239. but there were some of them.

  240. Men of Cyprus

  241. and Cyrene

  242. who weren't coming to Antioch

  243. spoke to the Hellenists,

  244. the Greeks,

  245. also preaching

  246. the Lord Jesus.

  247. Well,

  248. when the Jewish leaders,

  249. when the Christian leaders

  250. in Jerusalem

  251. got wind of this

  252. back in headquarters,

  253. they are not

  254. particularly happy.

  255. and so they send

  256. a delegation.

  257. They send one of their own.

  258. They send,

  259. verse 22,

  260. a man called Barnabas

  261. down to Antioch

  262. to investigate.

  263. And Barnabas

  264. is an interesting choice.

  265. I'm not sure

  266. if you've heard

  267. the language

  268. that people use

  269. to respond

  270. to innovators

  271. in technology.

  272. And so a new piece

  273. of technology

  274. comes out

  275. and how do people respond?

  276. There's different responses,

  277. aren't there?

  278. So some people,

  279. when it comes to

  280. new technology,

  281. a new iPhone

  282. or new iPad

  283. or something comes out,

  284. some people are said

  285. to be early adopters.

  286. And they love,

  287. don't they,

  288. trying out new gadgets.

  289. There's people like that here.

  290. And they love

  291. trying out new ways

  292. of doing things.

  293. And then there's

  294. another group

  295. and people talk about

  296. the early majority.

  297. They get on board

  298. with some

  299. technical advance

  300. once that technology

  301. has gained

  302. a little bit of traction.

  303. And then there's

  304. another group

  305. that are called

  306. the later majority.

  307. They don't embrace

  308. technology

  309. until pretty much

  310. everyone else has.

  311. And then at the other end

  312. there are

  313. those who are

  314. the phobics.

  315. And they are the people

  316. who are generally

  317. allergic to any

  318. kind of technological

  319. change.

  320. There's

  321. the early adopters,

  322. there's the early majority,

  323. there's the late majority,

  324. and then there's

  325. the phobics.

  326. And the reason

  327. I'm telling you that

  328. is because

  329. when it comes to

  330. what God is doing

  331. in this period

  332. of history,

  333. the new thing

  334. that God is doing,

  335. Barnabas is an

  336. early adopter.

  337. Remember,

  338. do you remember

  339. he was the first one

  340. to put his arm

  341. around Saul?

  342. When he came to

  343. Jerusalem and all

  344. the other Jewish leaders

  345. are terrified of Saul,

  346. Barnabas accepts him.

  347. And now he goes

  348. down to Antioch

  349. to see what's happening

  350. with the Gentiles there.

  351. And instead of being

  352. sceptical

  353. or phobic,

  354. he is

  355. delighted.

  356. He embraces

  357. their newfound faith.

  358. And verse 23,

  359. it says,

  360. when he came

  361. and saw the grace

  362. of God,

  363. he was glad.

  364. And he exhorted them,

  365. encouraged them

  366. all to remain faithful

  367. to the Lord

  368. with steadfast purpose.

  369. And then Lucas

  370. tells us

  371. why he was

  372. an early adopter.

  373. It was because

  374. he was in tune

  375. with God's purposes.

  376. Verse 24,

  377. he was a good man,

  378. full of the Holy Spirit

  379. and of faith,

  380. and a great

  381. many people

  382. were added

  383. to the Lord.

  384. And as that ministry

  385. amongst the people

  386. of Antioch

  387. grew,

  388. soon people realised

  389. he couldn't do it

  390. all on his own.

  391. So he heads off

  392. to Tarsus

  393. and he brings Saul

  394. along.

  395. He brings him

  396. back to Antioch.

  397. Verse 26 tells us

  398. they spent a year

  399. together

  400. teaching the church

  401. in Antioch.

  402. And as the church

  403. grew,

  404. people came up

  405. with a new nickname.

  406. These believers

  407. are Christians.

  408. The people of Christ

  409. in Christ ones.

  410. And then Luke

  411. tells us

  412. there's a third

  413. arrival in Antioch

  414. after Barnabas

  415. and after Saul

  416. comes.

  417. There's a prophet

  418. from Jerusalem

  419. called Agabus

  420. and he predicts

  421. a worldwide famine.

  422. A famine

  423. that Luke tells us

  424. did take place

  425. in the years

  426. that followed.

  427. But the significant

  428. thing is

  429. how do the believers

  430. in Antioch

  431. respond to this?

  432. To the prophecy

  433. that Agabus brings?

  434. And we read about it

  435. don't we

  436. in the last two verses.

  437. Verse 29

  438. the disciples determined

  439. everyone according

  440. to his ability

  441. to send relief

  442. to the brothers

  443. living in Judea.

  444. And they did so.

  445. Sending it to the elders

  446. by the hand of

  447. Barnabas and Saul.

  448. They give generously.

  449. The church in Antioch

  450. gives to

  451. the church in Judea.

  452. They want to help

  453. their brothers and sisters.

  454. They are connected.

  455. There is a formal

  456. connection there.

  457. And so they pull together

  458. and they send money

  459. with Paul and Barnabas.

  460. And as they head

  461. back to Judea

  462. it's a wonderful moment

  463. in the story isn't it?

  464. The Gentiles

  465. whom the Jews

  466. at the start of the chapter

  467. wouldn't even spend

  468. a meal with

  469. are now caring

  470. for the very people

  471. who wanted to exclude them.

  472. It's a stunning

  473. reversal isn't it?

  474. And it's another example

  475. of the pattern

  476. we've seen a few times

  477. in Acts

  478. of God's people

  479. caring for one another

  480. in need.

  481. Except now

  482. it includes the Gentiles

  483. as well.

  484. Gentiles loving

  485. and serving Jews.

  486. It's an evocative picture

  487. of what the mission

  488. of Jesus has accomplished.

  489. The unity of Jewish

  490. and Gentiles

  491. in fellowship

  492. and love

  493. all together.

  494. At the end

  495. of the first half

  496. of the chapter

  497. the Gentiles

  498. are receiving a gift

  499. the gift of the Holy Spirit.

  500. At the end

  501. of the second half

  502. of the chapter

  503. the Gentiles

  504. are the ones

  505. giving a gift.

  506. And the two

  507. are inextricably linked.

  508. Because what happened

  509. in Antioch

  510. was the work of God.

  511. Just like what happened

  512. to Peter

  513. was the work of God.

  514. And what happened

  515. to Cornelius

  516. and what happened

  517. to those Jewish leaders

  518. in Jerusalem

  519. who did a complete

  520. 180 degree turn

  521. it was the work of God.

  522. And that I think

  523. is the big theme

  524. that ties together

  525. Acts chapter 11.

    Acts 11 chapter mention

  526. The work of God.

  527. We hear about it

  528. in the first half

  529. of the chapter

  530. with Peter.

  531. The work of God

  532. and then in the second half

  533. of the chapter

  534. we hear about it

  535. in Antioch.

  536. The word of God

  537. that people are speaking.

  538. People speaking to

  539. seeking to persuade others.

  540. People praying.

  541. People going.

  542. But what is accomplished here

  543. is accomplished

  544. under the Lord's hand.

  545. And I want to remind you

  546. of how Luke

  547. underlines that.

  548. So track with me

  549. through this chapter.

  550. What is it

  551. that Peter explains

  552. the 180 degree

  553. that he has done

  554. with respect

  555. to the Gentiles?

  556. He talks about

  557. the vision

  558. that he received

  559. from God.

  560. And then he talks

  561. to us

  562. about the messengers

  563. that were sent

  564. to him

  565. by God.

  566. And then he talks

  567. about the spirit

  568. of God

  569. who told him

  570. to go with these men

  571. and the voice

  572. that he heard

  573. was the voice of God.

  574. And he tells

  575. the circumstances

  576. in which God

  577. was revealing himself

  578. to Peter

  579. while at the same time

  580. working in another city

  581. to reveal himself

  582. to Cornelius

  583. before bringing

  584. the two together.

  585. God's divine purpose.

  586. And then he tells

  587. about the spirit

  588. falling on Cornelius.

  589. The spirit

  590. who unmistakably

  591. came from God.

  592. He makes the point

  593. very explicitly

  594. in verse 17.

  595. He says that God

  596. gave them the gift

  597. of the Holy Spirit.

  598. All the events

  599. that Peter describes

  600. are the work of God.

  601. And then when

  602. the Jerusalem leaders

  603. reflect back to Peter

  604. what they've just learned,

  605. listen to the language

  606. they choose.

  607. Look at verse 18.

  608. They say even

  609. the Gentiles

  610. God has granted

  611. repentance to.

  612. And when they heard

  613. these things

  614. they fell silent

  615. and they glorified God.

  616. Saying then

  617. to the Gentiles

  618. God

  619. has also granted

  620. repentance

  621. that leads to life.

  622. It's a pretty

  623. interesting way

  624. to speak about repentance.

  625. Repentance means

  626. when you turn away

  627. from your own sins

  628. and you turn back

  629. to God.

  630. You turn away

  631. from going

  632. your own way

  633. to God.

  634. It's what

  635. every Christian

  636. must do

  637. to be a Christian.

  638. The command

  639. is to repent.

  640. It's an action

  641. isn't it?

  642. It's a choice

  643. to make.

  644. And yet

  645. the Jewish leaders

  646. in the way

  647. that they describe it here

  648. they describe it

  649. as a gift

  650. of God.

  651. The repentance

  652. of the Gentiles

  653. they say

  654. has been

  655. gifted to them

  656. granted to them

  657. by God.

  658. Their repentance

  659. their turning

  660. was a gift

  661. of divine

  662. grace and favour.

  663. And the language

  664. is very deliberate.

  665. Vocabulary

  666. matters.

  667. And then listen

  668. to how Luke

  669. describes what

  670. happened in Antioch

  671. when Jewish Christians

  672. first turned up

  673. there with the gospel.

  674. There were believers

  675. teaching in Antioch

  676. and responding

  677. of course

  678. but once again

  679. Luke chooses

  680. his language

  681. really carefully

  682. and he focuses

  683. on the way

  684. that God's power

  685. was at work.

  686. The vocabulary

  687. matters.

  688. Look at verse 21

  689. and the

  690. hand of the Lord

  691. was with them.

  692. And a great number

  693. of people who believed

  694. turned to the Lord.

  695. By the hand

  696. of the Lord

  697. the people

  698. turned

  699. to the Lord.

  700. It was God

  701. who changed

  702. their hearts

  703. and their lives.

  704. And then finally

  705. look how Luke

  706. describes the reaction

  707. of Barnabas

  708. when he turns up

  709. in Antioch

  710. and he finds

  711. all these Christians

  712. there.

  713. He came

  714. and he saw

  715. verse 23

  716. the grace

  717. of God

  718. and he was glad.

  719. It doesn't say

  720. Barnabas arrived

  721. and he saw

  722. the scattered Christians

  723. what they'd managed

  724. to achieve

  725. through their ministry.

  726. He doesn't say

  727. Barnabas arrived

  728. and he saw

  729. what the people

  730. of Antioch

  731. had done

  732. by turning

  733. to Jesus.

  734. He says

  735. Barnabas

  736. arrived

  737. and he saw

  738. the grace

  739. of God.

  740. What God

  741. had done.

  742. He chooses

  743. his language

  744. very carefully.

  745. Vocabulary

  746. matters.

  747. And we find

  748. this language

  749. being used

  750. over and over

  751. and over again

  752. and it's carefully

  753. chosen at every point

  754. because Luke

  755. the author of Acts

  756. wants you and I

  757. to understand

  758. what this story

  759. is about.

  760. this book

  761. is known

  762. isn't it

  763. as the Acts

  764. of the Apostles

  765. but we know

  766. that it should

  767. be known

  768. as the Acts

  769. of God

  770. because the mission

  771. of the Apostles

  772. is the mission

  773. of Jesus

  774. and the birth

  775. of the early church

  776. is the work

  777. of Jesus

  778. and the spread

  779. of the gospel

  780. throughout the known

  781. world at this time

  782. is the plan

  783. of God

  784. fulfilled by God

  785. in the power

  786. of the Holy Spirit

  787. and in the name

  788. of his son

  789. Jesus Christ.

  790. What Acts 11

  791. tells us

  792. and what in fact

  793. the whole book

  794. of Acts tells us

  795. is that God

  796. is at work

  797. in people's lives

  798. and this chapter

  799. is at pains

  800. to point that out.

  801. This chapter

  802. chooses its vocabulary

  803. really carefully

  804. it's a chapter

  805. about the work

  806. of God

  807. and the work

  808. of God

  809. continues to this day

  810. and it continues

  811. here

  812. and all over

  813. the world.

  814. It continues

  815. in our lives

  816. in the lives

  817. of people around us

  818. so how do we

  819. respond to it?

  820. I want to finish

  821. with four applications

  822. alright

  823. they're on your sheet

  824. actually

  825. I wrote them

  826. under the sermon

  827. because you won't

  828. remember them.

  829. Four suggestions

  830. on the significance

  831. of this chapter

  832. for you

  833. and for me.

  834. First of all

  835. believing and repenting

  836. that is

  837. the fundamental

  838. work of God

  839. in someone's life

  840. and Acts 11

  841. reminds us of that

  842. look again

  843. at verse 18

  844. when they heard

  845. these things

  846. they fell silent

  847. they glorified God

  848. saying then

  849. to the Gentiles

  850. also God

  851. has granted

  852. repentance

  853. that leads to life.

  854. Verse 21

  855. and the hand

  856. of the Lord

  857. was with them

  858. and a great number

  859. who believed

  860. turned to the Lord.

  861. If you are

  862. trusting in the Lord

  863. Jesus Christ

  864. this morning

  865. if you would

  866. call yourself

  867. a Christian

  868. if you are

  869. a believer

  870. in the Lord

  871. Jesus Christ

  872. then this

  873. work of God

  874. must have

  875. taken place

  876. in your life

  877. and given

  878. it is a work

  879. of God

  880. you should

  881. thank him

  882. for it.

  883. God

  884. granted

  885. you

  886. repentance

  887. and you

  888. must resist

  889. that temptation

  890. to think

  891. that your

  892. relationship

  893. with God

  894. is something

  895. that you've

  896. initiated

  897. you've

  898. created

  899. you deserve

  900. and of course

  901. the other

  902. implication

  903. is a sobering

  904. one

  905. that if you've

  906. never believed

  907. the gospel

  908. if you've

  909. never turned

  910. from your sins

  911. then you

  912. cannot

  913. rightly

  914. call yourself

  915. a Christian

  916. because this

  917. is at the

  918. heart

  919. of what

  920. a Christian

  921. is

  922. someone

  923. who turns

  924. away

  925. from living

  926. from themselves

  927. in order

  928. to live

  929. for God

  930. somebody

  931. who realises

  932. that they

  933. need the

  934. Lord Jesus

  935. that God

  936. sent to

  937. save us

  938. and so

  939. if you're

  940. here this

  941. morning

  942. and you're

  943. still

  944. considering

  945. what it

  946. will mean

  947. if and

  948. when

  949. you are

  950. ready to

  951. become a

  952. Christian

  953. what it

  954. will mean

  955. is it

  956. will mean

  957. believing

  958. and repenting

  959. it will

  960. mean trusting

  961. and following

  962. the Lord

  963. Jesus

  964. and turning

  965. away from

  966. living for

  967. yourself

  968. and given

  969. that this

  970. is the

  971. work of

  972. God

  973. the best

  974. thing that

  975. you can do

  976. this morning

  977. the best

  978. way that

  979. you can

  980. move in

  981. that

  982. direction

  983. is praying

  984. this morning

  985. God

  986. please

  987. give me

  988. repentance

  989. and faith

  990. secondly

  991. through trusting

  992. and praying

  993. because if

  994. Acts 11

  995. suggests that

  996. people becoming

  997. Christians

  998. is a work

  999. of God

  1000. then those

  1001. of us

  1002. who want

  1003. to see

  1004. people

  1005. become

  1006. Christians

  1007. need to

  1008. make sure

  1009. that we

  1010. don't get

  1011. too big

  1012. for our

  1013. boots

  1014. and we

  1015. need to

  1016. remember

  1017. that we

  1018. may well

  1019. try and

  1020. explain

  1021. the gospel

  1022. to others

  1023. and we

  1024. may try

  1025. and live

  1026. in a way

  1027. that shows

  1028. people the

  1029. love of

  1030. the Lord

  1031. Jesus

  1032. and we

  1033. may really

  1034. want people

  1035. to love

  1036. to share

  1037. our faith

  1038. I hope

  1039. that's true

  1040. but it

  1041. is God

  1042. alone

  1043. it is God

  1044. alone who

  1045. can ultimately

  1046. make that

  1047. happen

  1048. and so

  1049. we need

  1050. to trust

  1051. him

  1052. for his

  1053. work

  1054. and it

  1055. makes a lot

  1056. of sense

  1057. for us

  1058. to pray

  1059. about it

  1060. because

  1061. prayer

  1062. what is

  1063. prayer

  1064. prayer is

  1065. articulating

  1066. that we

  1067. depend on

  1068. God to

  1069. change

  1070. people

  1071. prayer is

  1072. our

  1073. admission

  1074. that we

  1075. can't

  1076. change a

  1077. person's

  1078. heart

  1079. prayer is

  1080. our plea

  1081. that God

  1082. would do

  1083. that

  1084. and God

  1085. alone

  1086. would do

  1087. that

  1088. and so

  1089. if you

  1090. want people

  1091. in your

  1092. life

  1093. and I

  1094. hope you

  1095. do

  1096. to repent

  1097. and believe

  1098. in the

  1099. Lord

  1100. Jesus

  1101. pray for

  1102. them

  1103. ask God

  1104. to work

  1105. in their

  1106. hearts

  1107. and if

  1108. as a

  1109. church

  1110. we want

  1111. our

  1112. church

  1113. to grow

  1114. for more

  1115. people to

  1116. come and

  1117. join us

  1118. for more

  1119. people to

  1120. grow in

  1121. their faith

  1122. to trust

  1123. the Lord

  1124. Jesus

  1125. we need

  1126. to pray

  1127. you may

  1128. or may

  1129. not be

  1130. aware of

  1131. this but

  1132. there are

  1133. thousands

  1134. and thousands

  1135. of books

  1136. written about

  1137. what they

  1138. call church

  1139. growth

  1140. strategies

  1141. every

  1142. Christian

  1143. wants to

  1144. see churches

  1145. grow

  1146. and in

  1147. the UK

  1148. at the

  1149. moment

  1150. there is

  1151. lots of

  1152. ink being

  1153. spilled

  1154. on

  1155. the way

  1156. you grow

  1157. churches

  1158. is actually

  1159. by being

  1160. better

  1161. organised

  1162. and lots

  1163. of structure

  1164. in place

  1165. and lots

  1166. of things

  1167. like that

  1168. but I

  1169. want to

  1170. remind you

  1171. that here

  1172. at IPC

  1173. and we

  1174. have one

  1175. primary

  1176. strategy

  1177. for growth

  1178. and

  1179. everything

  1180. else

  1181. is

  1182. secondary

  1183. to that

  1184. that is

  1185. we pray

  1186. we pray

  1187. because

  1188. we are

  1189. convinced

  1190. that people

  1191. becoming

  1192. Christians

  1193. is the

  1194. work of

  1195. God

  1196. and we

  1197. trust

  1198. him to

  1199. do it

  1200. thirdly

  1201. seeing

  1202. and

  1203. praising

  1204. I hope

  1205. you notice

  1206. that's what

  1207. Barnabas did

  1208. in this

  1209. chapter

  1210. he saw

  1211. and he

  1212. praised

  1213. and he

  1214. took time

  1215. to observe

  1216. the work

  1217. of God

  1218. and when

  1219. he looked

  1220. at the

  1221. lives

  1222. of the

  1223. people

  1224. that he

  1225. met

  1226. he was

  1227. filled

  1228. with joy

  1229. and he

  1230. worshipped

  1231. God

  1232. do you

  1233. remember

  1234. that when

  1235. he arrived

  1236. in verse

  1237. 23

  1238. he saw

  1239. what the

  1240. grace of

  1241. God

  1242. had done

  1243. and he

  1244. was glad

  1245. and he

  1246. encouraged

  1247. them all

  1248. and so

  1249. surely

  1250. part of

  1251. what

  1252. the work

  1253. of God

  1254. in our

  1255. church

  1256. means

  1257. is that

  1258. we'll

  1259. do

  1260. likewise

  1261. it

  1262. means

  1263. I think

  1264. that we'll

  1265. actually

  1266. slow down

  1267. enough

  1268. to see

  1269. what God

  1270. is doing

  1271. by his

  1272. grace

  1273. and I

  1274. suspect

  1275. when we

  1276. do that

  1277. we won't

  1278. be able

  1279. to stop

  1280. being glad

  1281. because

  1282. one of the

  1283. privileges

  1284. of being

  1285. part of

  1286. a church

  1287. like this

  1288. is that

  1289. there are

  1290. examples

  1291. of the

  1292. work

  1293. of God

  1294. all around

  1295. you this

  1296. morning

  1297. and that

  1298. should

  1299. thrill

  1300. your

  1301. heart

  1302. one of

  1303. the

  1304. thrills

  1305. of being

  1306. part of

  1307. a church

  1308. family

  1309. is seeing

  1310. the signs

  1311. of God's

  1312. grace

  1313. and I

  1314. certainly

  1315. find that

  1316. thrilling

  1317. so for

  1318. example

  1319. we have a

  1320. couple in

  1321. our church

  1322. who in the

  1323. midst of

  1324. great

  1325. great

  1326. heartache

  1327. and sadness

  1328. have kept

  1329. loving the

  1330. Lord

  1331. God

  1332. do you see

  1333. what the

  1334. grace of

  1335. God

  1336. has done

  1337. we have

  1338. people sitting

  1339. here in

  1340. front of

  1341. me who've

  1342. come from

  1343. a background

  1344. that saying

  1345. it would be

  1346. dysfunctional

  1347. would be

  1348. putting a

  1349. very positive

  1350. spin on

  1351. it

  1352. but with

  1353. God's

  1354. grace

  1355. and help

  1356. they've put

  1357. their lives

  1358. back together

  1359. and they're

  1360. living for

  1361. God

  1362. do you see

  1363. what the

  1364. grace of

  1365. God

  1366. has done

  1367. there are

  1368. people here

  1369. who've

  1370. managed

  1371. to forgive

  1372. with

  1373. God's

  1374. strength

  1375. there are

  1376. people here

  1377. whose marriage

  1378. is hard

  1379. and it's

  1380. often hard

  1381. but they've

  1382. continued

  1383. over many

  1384. years to

  1385. faithfully

  1386. serve Jesus

  1387. and keep

  1388. trusting him

  1389. and stay

  1390. together

  1391. do you see

  1392. what the

  1393. grace of

  1394. God

  1395. has done

  1396. we have a

  1397. man in

  1398. our church

  1399. who a

  1400. number of

  1401. years ago

  1402. was completely

  1403. ignoring

  1404. God

  1405. and he

  1406. needed a

  1407. hand over

  1408. control of

  1409. his life

  1410. to Jesus

  1411. and he

  1412. did

  1413. he repented

  1414. he believed

  1415. and he

  1416. continues to

  1417. believe

  1418. and God

  1419. continues to

  1420. give him

  1421. victory over

  1422. his temptations

  1423. and addictions

  1424. do you see

  1425. what the

  1426. grace of

  1427. God has

  1428. done

  1429. we have

  1430. women in

  1431. our church

  1432. who would

  1433. love to

  1434. be married

  1435. but God

  1436. hasn't

  1437. opened that

  1438. door

  1439. and they

  1440. feel lonely

  1441. at times

  1442. but they

  1443. haven't

  1444. become

  1445. bitter

  1446. they've

  1447. devoted

  1448. themselves

  1449. to serving

  1450. and loving

  1451. God's

  1452. people

  1453. do you

  1454. see what

  1455. the grace

  1456. of God

  1457. has done

  1458. we have

  1459. people in

  1460. our church

  1461. who struggle

  1462. with chronic

  1463. anxiety

  1464. it's a very

  1465. heavy burden

  1466. to bear at

  1467. times and at

  1468. times it's

  1469. been overwhelming

  1470. but they've

  1471. surrendered their

  1472. life to the

  1473. lordship of

  1474. Jesus

  1475. and they

  1476. trust in him

  1477. to get them

  1478. through every

  1479. day

  1480. to keep

  1481. persevering

  1482. in all the

  1483. ups and

  1484. downs

  1485. to keep

  1486. growing

  1487. to keep

  1488. looking to

  1489. serve others

  1490. in whatever

  1491. way they

  1492. can

  1493. do you see

  1494. what the

  1495. grace of

  1496. God has

  1497. done

  1498. we have

  1499. teenagers

  1500. who are in

  1501. school and

  1502. have been

  1503. unashamed of

  1504. the lord

  1505. Jesus but

  1506. they are

  1507. outsiders

  1508. and they

  1509. don't fit

  1510. in and

  1511. they're given

  1512. a hard

  1513. time but

  1514. they bravely

  1515. stand for

  1516. him

  1517. do you see

  1518. what the

  1519. grace of

  1520. God has

  1521. done

  1522. we have

  1523. those for

  1524. whom grief

  1525. is a

  1526. daily

  1527. painful

  1528. companion

  1529. and yet

  1530. they keep

  1531. reading their

  1532. bibles and

  1533. praying and

  1534. trusting in the

  1535. lord Jesus who

  1536. is the

  1537. resurrection and

  1538. the life

  1539. they are

  1540. just

  1541. examples

  1542. there are

  1543. plenty more

  1544. stories sitting

  1545. around you

  1546. there are as

  1547. many stories as

  1548. there are people

  1549. sitting next to

  1550. you

  1551. and what I'm

  1552. trying to

  1553. what I'm

  1554. trying to

  1555. communicate is

  1556. this to you

  1557. sometimes we

  1558. just need to

  1559. open our

  1560. eyes to

  1561. see like

  1562. Barnabas did

  1563. and I'm

  1564. trying to

  1565. teach you that

  1566. language matters

  1567. vocabulary matters

  1568. because if we

  1569. get the

  1570. vocabulary right

  1571. seeing who has

  1572. really done

  1573. these things

  1574. amongst us

  1575. it will lead

  1576. us to respond

  1577. rightly with

  1578. praise

  1579. see what the

  1580. graces of

  1581. God has done

  1582. fourthly and

  1583. briefly and

  1584. finally remaining

  1585. true

  1586. remaining true

  1587. I look at

  1588. verse 23

  1589. this was

  1590. Barnabas's

  1591. message for

  1592. them keep

  1593. going stand

  1594. firm

  1595. having seen the

  1596. grace of God

  1597. in that city

  1598. he urged them

  1599. to never

  1600. depart from

  1601. that grace

  1602. instead he

  1603. pleaded with

  1604. them be loyal

  1605. to Jesus

  1606. with all of

  1607. your hearts

  1608. I think it's

  1609. when we see

  1610. how gracious

  1611. God has been

  1612. to us

  1613. that our

  1614. desire to

  1615. stick with

  1616. his grace

  1617. grows

  1618. and so the

  1619. risen and

  1620. exalted Lord

  1621. Jesus urges

  1622. you this

  1623. morning in

  1624. the same way

  1625. that Barnabas

  1626. urged them in

  1627. Antioch where

  1628. they were first

  1629. called Christians

  1630. our spiritual

  1631. forebears

  1632. saw the work

  1633. of God

  1634. and they

  1635. responded as

  1636. they should

  1637. and you and

  1638. I bear the

  1639. same name

  1640. we have the

  1641. same responsibility

  1642. and the same

  1643. joy

  1644. and having

  1645. seen God

  1646. work in our

  1647. lives

  1648. having seen

  1649. that our

  1650. repenting

  1651. and our

  1652. believing

  1653. is actually

  1654. God's gift

  1655. to us

  1656. having seen

  1657. his initiative

  1658. the fruit of

  1659. his power

  1660. having seen

  1661. his grace

  1662. and tasted

  1663. just how sweet

  1664. it is

  1665. he calls

  1666. on us

  1667. to stay

  1668. close to

  1669. him

  1670. to stay

  1671. true to

  1672. his grace

  1673. as verse

  1674. 23 says

  1675. when he

  1676. came

  1677. and saw

  1678. the grace

  1679. of God

  1680. he was

  1681. glad

  1682. and he

  1683. exhorted

  1684. them all

  1685. to remain

  1686. faithful to

  1687. the Lord

  1688. with

  1689. steadfast

  1690. purpose

  1691. let me

  1692. pray for

  1693. us
