  1. Do open your Bibles to James chapter 4.

    James 4 chapter mention

  2. We'll pick it up at verse 13.

  3. And before we get there, let's pray one more time.

  4. !

  5. Amen.

  6. The 1942 film classic, Casablanca.

  7. I wasn't there when it was first released.

  8. But it opens with a voiceover.

  9. If you've seen it, you'll know this.

  10. It says this.

  11. With the coming of the Second World War, many eyes in imprisoned Europe turned hopefully or desperately towards the freedom of the Americas.

  12. The narrator then describes the journey that people took through France.

  13. There's a little map that you can see and all of that.

  14. And people went through France and across the Mediterranean through Casablanca where they had to wait before they moved further on.

  15. But this is what we do when life is hard.

  16. We look at others who seem to be thriving and we want what they have.

  17. And we order our lives after that.

  18. We head off in that direction.

  19. When things get difficult, we look for a way out.

  20. And this can be true in any area of life.

  21. Work is hard.

  22. Marriage is hard.

  23. Relationships are hard.

  24. And so we turn, hopefully or desperately in some cases, toward the freedom or perceived freedom of another option.

  25. And of course, this moment in our culture, that is positively encouraged, isn't it?

  26. Regardless of the consequences.

  27. If you're not happy where you are or things aren't absolutely optimal, you're encouraged positively to go and look elsewhere regardless of the consequences.

  28. That can also be true in the Christian life.

  29. Especially in a world where being a Christian is viewed negatively.

  30. When being a Christian is something that actually costs you in the context of life.

  31. We find ourselves drawn to what we feel would be an easier, more comfortable, more straightforward, more fulfilling, it might seem, way of life.

  32. And so we go quiet on our faith and we do what we're told in the workplace, no matter how compromised it makes us.

  33. Or we adapt what we believe in order to accommodate what the culture is saying.

  34. We'll do anything so that we're not ostracized.

  35. So that things aren't unbearably difficult.

  36. So that we don't fall the wrong side of the opinions of those whose opinions really matter to us.

  37. If we can just change how we think and act, if we can just adopt the ways of the world around us, well the criticism then it dries up.

  38. And when the criticism dries up, life gets a whole lot easier.

  39. And we've studied this letter over the last couple of months.

  40. We've seen that this is the mindset that James is challenging in his hearers.

  41. If we could paraphrase our film, we might say this.

  42. With the coming of Christ into the lives of these first believers and the opposition from the Jewish religious leadership that has followed,

  43. many eyes in persecuted and scattered Christendom turned hopefully or desperately toward the freedom and recognition of the established religion.

  44. That was the pull.

  45. The pull was back to the old ways of Judaism.

  46. And these Jewish zealots that are persecuting these Christians, making their life very difficult,

  47. the trials that they are going through because of this, are trying to win them back.

  48. Win them back to their cause.

  49. And so what has happened is, many that James is writing to have adopted the same approach as the zealots.

  50. So the zealots are going after them, persecuting them, making life difficult, haranguing them, giving them a hard time and all of that.

  51. And James is saying that he sees this in the response of the Christians.

  52. In their words and actions.

  53. In the hope that they will be accepted.

  54. They are trying to curry favor with the rich and influential religious leaders.

  55. They are doing that also because they think that they can hold the two together.

  56. They can be acceptable and they can achieve the righteousness of God.

  57. They can fight the way the world fights and bring in the righteousness of God.

  58. They are doing it on their terms.

  59. And James has rebuked this behavior pretty directly up to this point.

  60. If you have been with us, you will have heard him.

  61. He does not pull his punches.

  62. But this morning what we discover is that James is speaking to the opposition.

  63. He is speaking to the opposing forces.

  64. The Jewish oppressors.

  65. It is a fascinating move.

  66. The come now that opens verse 13.

  67. Chapter 4 verse 13.

  68. And again in 5.1.

  69. They tie this section together.

  70. James is using first of all a parable.

  71. And then a prophecy directed towards the enemies of God's people.

  72. And he is doing this as a warning to them.

  73. They need to repent of their oppression.

  74. But the fascinating thing is that James does this by speaking to these beleaguered Christians.

  75. He gives them the parable and them the prophecy.

  76. And what he is trying to do then is encourage them to stay the course.

  77. Encourage them to endure with Christ no matter how painful it becomes.

  78. He is trying to encourage them to see that it is worth it to keep going with Christ however difficult things get.

  79. Because of where the alternative ultimately leads.

  80. Sounds quite strange doesn't it initially when we hear that.

  81. But this is actually a common method in the Old Testament with the prophets in the Old Testament.

  82. So if you were to go to Isaiah chapter 13 verse 6.

    Isaiah 13:6

  83. God says this.

  84. Wail for the day of the Lord is near.

  85. It will come like destruction from the Almighty.

  86. Sounds quite similar doesn't it?

  87. Verse 1.

  88. Weep and howl for the miseries that are coming upon you.

  89. Wail for the day of the Lord is near and destruction is coming.

  90. Now in this case he is speaking to Babylon.

  91. Who are oppressing God's people.

  92. But he is saying these words to Israel.

  93. The prophecy is to Israel about Babylon.

  94. Babylon so that they would see what judgment was coming to those who rejected their God.

  95. And the traitors in this parable in 4.13.

  96. And the rich in 5 verse 1 are the same people.

  97. And he isn't introducing just a new category here of rich people.

  98. We've been meeting the rich all the way through the letter.

  99. The rich are the same group that James has referred to throughout.

  100. The Jewish ruling leaders who have rejected Christ.

  101. Chapter 2.

  102. And blasphemed his name.

  103. 2 verses 6 and 7.

  104. So James' logic in the letter has been this.

  105. He said initially to this group of beleaguered Christians.

  106. Your trials are sent by God in order to mature your faith and make you more like Christ.

  107. Therefore don't respond to them by getting angry and trying to play your opponents at their own game.

  108. Instead, humble yourselves in repentance.

  109. Return to God and trust that he will exalt you in the end.

  110. That repentance will affect how you speak to and about other people.

  111. Don't stand above the law of neighbor love in the context of the community.

  112. Pursue unity.

  113. And now he says,

  114. And don't forget what God will do to those who oppose you.

  115. He's saying don't forget the end of the story.

  116. And so what he's doing is reminding us all this morning that walking away from obedience to Christ,

  117. whether it's for the sake of an easier life or for the sake of success or acceptance,

  118. even if you think that by doing that you're very clever and you are going to serve the advance of God's kingdom,

  119. James is saying it's not worth it.

  120. It's not worth it.

  121. Don't go there.

  122. Here's why.

  123. Three reasons.

  124. Number one, the Lord sees.

  125. The Lord sees.

  126. 4.13

  127. Come now you who say today or tomorrow we will go into such and such a town and spend a year there and trade and make profit.

  128. Yet you do not know what tomorrow will bring.

  129. It's like James is using a parable.

  130. And he's describing God's enemies as traveling traders.

  131. It's a picture that the Lord Jesus uses over and over again in the Gospels.

  132. If you're familiar, he uses the image of business and trading and economic transaction in lots of his parables.

  133. So Matthew 18.23

  134. Matthew 21.33

  135. Luke 16.13

  136. Those who were authorized by the Sanhedrin to,

  137. That's the context of the book of James.

  138. Or chapter 9 verse 1 in the book of Acts.

  139. Those who were authorized by the Sanhedrin to,

  140. Bring any belonging to the way, that is, any who have become Christians, men and women, bound to Jerusalem.

  141. Go and get them.

  142. They've been scattered from Jerusalem.

  143. Go and get them.

  144. And if they won't renounce their Christian faith, bind them and bring them back to Jerusalem.

  145. That's the context of James.

  146. And what's happening then in this parable is,

  147. These traveling men from Jerusalem are trying to reincorporate these new disciples of Jesus back into their apostate Jerusalem.

  148. That is their prophet, so to speak.

  149. The economic metaphor continues.

  150. 5 verse 3.

  151. You have laid up treasure.

  152. James says,

  153. In the last days, behold, the wages of the laborers who mowed your fields, which you kept back by fraud, are crying out against you.

  154. 5 verse 5.

  155. You have lived on the earth in luxury and in self-indulgence.

  156. You have fattened your hearts in a day of slaughter.

  157. These leaders of old Israel have stored up for themselves the spiritual treasure of the gospel that they have been given.

  158. They have also kept the gold and silver of the temple for themselves, verse 3.

  159. They are rich in wealth because of that and in spiritual resources.

  160. But instead of sharing those riches with others, as they were called to do,

  161. instead of being a light to the world as they were called to be,

  162. they oppress and they persecute the people of God and the Lord sees it all.

  163. James is telling them what they have done.

  164. The Lord knows.

  165. He sees it.

  166. They should have known that they are precarious.

  167. Life is a mist, verse 14.

  168. Their lives, they think they are so strong and yet he reminds them,

  169. Your life is a mist, verse 14.

  170. They should be asking whether the work that they do is really of the Lord, verse 15,

  171. but instead they boast of their own strength.

  172. Even though they have heard that Jesus is God's Messiah,

  173. He is the Lord who has come,

  174. even though they know that that is right, verse 17,

  175. they serve themselves.

  176. And the Lord sees it all.

  177. James is warning the enemies.

  178. But remember, apart from that one guy back in chapter 2,

  179. mentioned with the robe and the ring who comes into their meetings,

  180. the leaders of this persecuting regime are not necessarily going to hear what he's saying.

  181. What he's doing here is reminding these oppressed Christians

  182. that he understands what is going on.

  183. And so when James is calling them to obedience,

  184. when he is calling them to follow Christ and return to Him

  185. rather than adopting the ways of their oppressors,

  186. he isn't naive.

  187. He knows how hard it is.

  188. But more than that,

  189. he is encouraging them that God sees what is happening

  190. and God knows the arrogance of the powerful enemies of the church.

  191. Whatever is going on in your life

  192. in terms of opposition because you're a Christian,

  193. the Lord sees it.

  194. Nothing that the opponents of the church get up to

  195. escapes the gaze of God.

  196. But he doesn't just see.

  197. Secondly,

  198. the Lord judges.

    Judges 5:1

  199. 5 verse 1,

  200. Come now you rich,

  201. weep and howl for the miseries that are coming upon you.

  202. Your riches have rotted and your garments are moth-eaten.

  203. Your gold and silver have corroded and their corrosion will be evidence against you

  204. and will eat your flesh like fire.

  205. You've fattened your hearts,

  206. verse 5,

  207. in a day of slaughter.

  208. Now we've already seen that the rich in James,

  209. as I said earlier,

  210. aren't just people with a strong bottom line.

  211. They are the ones who possess the ring and the robe that marks out their authority.

  212. Chapter 2,

  213. verse 2.

  214. They are the ones who oppress this church and blaspheme Christ's name.

  215. And here we are shown what James has already promised.

  216. Do you remember back in chapter 1,

  217. verses 9 to 11,

  218. then these opponents will fade away in the midst of their pursuits.

  219. This is how that will happen.

  220. All of this imagery is Old Testament imagery of judgment.

  221. The call to weep and wail echoes Isaiah 13, as I said.

  222. Isaiah 14, it's there as well.

  223. Isaiah 15.

  224. They all speak like this when they promise the enemies of God's people that judgment is coming.

  225. And the language of decay.

  226. Do you notice that?

  227. Your riches have rotted.

  228. Your garments are moth-eaten.

  229. That echoes Isaiah chapter 50, verse 9.

    Isaiah 50:9

  230. It says this,

  231. Behold, the Lord God helps me,

  232. who will declare me guilty.

  233. Behold, all of them will wear out like a garment.

  234. The moth will eat them up.

  235. These are the words of the suffering servant in Isaiah chapter 50.

    Isaiah 50 chapter mention

  236. And James is applying them then to these exiled believers.

  237. He's saying both that they're walking the same path as the Lord Jesus Christ,

  238. the suffering servant.

  239. But also that just as God judged Christ's enemies,

  240. so he will judge the enemies of Christ's people.

  241. These opponents would have looked so impressive.

  242. They had all the prestige.

  243. They had all the cultural capital.

  244. They had all the influence.

  245. All the wealth of the temple at their disposal.

  246. All the power and influence of a religious establishment.

  247. It was a heady mix of religion and politics,

  248. all exercised in the name of God.

  249. It would have felt impregnable,

  250. completely impregnable,

  251. to James' scattered flock.

  252. In fact,

  253. in many ways,

  254. this system was impregnable.

  255. No one would have had the ability to challenge the authority

  256. or make any headway in bringing about change.

  257. But just as Jesus offered His own denunciation

  258. in the Gospels of this system,

  259. remember in Luke,

  260. Luke 23,

  261. Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites!

  262. Jesus says,

  263. I send you prophets and wise men and scribes,

  264. some of whom you will kill or crucify,

  265. and some you will flog in your synagogues

  266. and persecute from town to town.

  267. Sounds like the parable just before.

  268. Just as Jesus offered His denunciation of this group,

  269. so James is doing the same.

  270. Yet again,

  271. we hear Him echoing the words of the Savior.

  272. He's telling this beleaguered group,

  273. remember what Jesus has said.

  274. The leaders,

  275. they were supposed to be a light to the world.

  276. They were supposed to bring the gospel of Christ

  277. to the nations.

  278. They were supposed to bring out

  279. and spread abroad

  280. the riches of this good news.

  281. But instead,

  282. Israel opposed God's Son during His ministry,

  283. and they are continuing to oppose His followers.

  284. They have hoarded for themselves

  285. these physical and spiritual blessings.

  286. Verse 6,

  287. They have even condemned and murdered

  288. the righteous person.

  289. Because of this,

  290. the misery of God's judgment is coming to them.

  291. Our context today is different.

  292. The church in our day

  293. doesn't face exactly the same

  294. systemic opposition.

  295. We do have a religious establishment.

  296. We do have a state church

  297. that at an institutional level

  298. has put the treasure of the gospel

  299. away somewhere

  300. in a cupboard

  301. or in a vault

  302. or something like that.

  303. It has forgotten

  304. that it exists

  305. for the sake of the world

  306. and not for its own sake

  307. as an institution.

  308. And so the light of the gospel

  309. doesn't shine as it should

  310. and God will judge that.

  311. As He will any church

  312. that purports to be a church

  313. but doesn't get the gospel out,

  314. doesn't proclaim Christ and Him crucified,

  315. keeps that gospel,

  316. that richness,

  317. the wealth

  318. from others.

  319. others.

  320. God will also judge

  321. every force

  322. that stands against His church.

  323. Every voice

  324. that raises itself

  325. arrogantly against His people

  326. as they,

  327. as you,

  328. as we

  329. seek to serve Him faithfully

  330. wherever He has placed us.

  331. So when the temptation comes

  332. to step back from faithfulness

  333. because the opposition

  334. feels too intense.

  335. It feels impossible

  336. to you to do otherwise.

  337. And look,

  338. it is intense

  339. when your job is on the line,

  340. your means of providing

  341. is on the line.

  342. It is intense

  343. when your children

  344. are getting a hard time

  345. at school for their faith

  346. or when your church

  347. gets its charitable status

  348. revoked for hate speech

  349. or when your PayPal account

  350. gets shut down

  351. because you hold extreme views

  352. or you're not considered

  353. for adoption

  354. because you would raise

  355. the child in the Christian faith.

  356. The list could go on and on

  357. in our day.

  358. The temptation

  359. to step back

  360. from the cross-shaped

  361. path of discipleship

  362. when that is what it means

  363. is significant.

  364. So we have to remember

  365. that that opposition

  366. is on the clock.

  367. It is time limited

  368. and that time is ticking

  369. and God will deal

  370. with these opponents.

  371. If we know

  372. that that is where

  373. we're headed,

  374. if we know that

  375. is what is going to happen,

  376. don't choose to leave

  377. the struggle

  378. in the present

  379. because it's quite simply

  380. not worth it.

  381. It isn't worth it

  382. in the end.

  383. Instead,

  384. what must we do?

  385. Well,

  386. James tells us

  387. we must lift our voices

  388. to the Lord.

  389. Cry out to Him

  390. for mercy

  391. because thirdly,

  392. first,

  393. the Lord sees.

  394. Secondly,

  395. the Lord judges.

  396. Thirdly,

  397. the Lord hears.

  398. Behold,

  399. the wages of the laborers

  400. who mowed your fields

  401. which you kept back

  402. by fraud

  403. are crying out against you

  404. when the cries

  405. of the harvesters

  406. have reached the ears

  407. of the Lord of hosts.

  408. Again,

  409. James is echoing

  410. the language of Jesus.

  411. I hope we've seen that

  412. as a kind of melody

  413. all the way through

  414. this letter.

  415. It's like He's saying,

  416. remember what Jesus said.

  417. You're in the midst

  418. of what Jesus promised

  419. was going to happen.

  420. Remember what He said

  421. about how to handle this.

  422. Again,

  423. it's the language

  424. of laborers

  425. and harvests

  426. that Jesus used.

  427. And again,

  428. He has in view

  429. spiritual labor

  430. and spiritual harvest.

  431. Remember,

  432. when Jesus saw

  433. the beleaguered crowds,

  434. His heart was open

  435. because they were like

  436. sheep without a shepherd,

  437. we're told.

  438. And He said this,

  439. the harvest is plentiful

  440. but the laborers are few.

  441. So pray earnestly

  442. to the Lord of the harvest

  443. to send out laborers

  444. into the harvest.

  445. Matthew 9.

  446. And again,

  447. in John 4,

  448. He connects the work

  449. of His disciples

  450. in harvesting fields

  451. when He says,

  452. John 4.35,

  453. Look,

  454. I tell you,

  455. lift up your eyes

  456. and see that the fields

  457. are white for harvest.

  458. Already the one who reaps

  459. is receiving wages

  460. and gathering fruit

  461. for eternal life

  462. so that the sower

  463. and reaper

  464. may rejoice together.

  465. That language from Jesus

  466. is referring to the apostles

  467. and the prophets

  468. of the book of Acts,

  469. that first wave of ministers.

  470. And it is the cries

  471. of these laborers,

  472. these harvesters,

  473. in the face of this opposition

  474. and obstruction

  475. by the Jewish leaders

  476. that have reached the ears

  477. of the Lord

  478. of the heavenly armies.

  479. There should have been

  480. a harvest of souls

  481. for these laborers

  482. in the gospel.

  483. But that harvest

  484. has been held back

  485. by the persecutors.

  486. That activity itself

  487. cries out to God,

  488. verse 4.

  489. Wages of the laborers

  490. who mowed your fields

  491. which you have kept back

  492. by fraud

  493. are crying out against you.

  494. The Lord hears.

  495. all the way through

  496. the Old Testament

  497. when God's people

  498. are oppressed,

  499. they would cry out

  500. to Him

  501. and He would deliver them.

  502. Remember Genesis 4,

    Genesis 4:10

  503. verse 10,

  504. Abel's blood

  505. cried out to God.

  506. Exodus chapter 2,

    Exodus 2 chapter mention

  507. God's people

  508. are in slavery

  509. to Pharaoh

  510. and what do the people do?

  511. They cry out to God

  512. and He remembered

  513. His covenant

  514. and He rescued them.

  515. When James uses

  516. language of the cries

  517. of these marginalized Christians

  518. having reached the ears

  519. of the Lord of hosts,

  520. He is connecting them

  521. to the history

  522. of the people of God.

  523. He is connecting them

  524. to the history

  525. of a people

  526. who when they cry

  527. to their heavenly Father,

  528. He hears

  529. and He answers.

  530. James is telling this group

  531. in the face of all

  532. of the impressive strength

  533. of this ruling

  534. religious establishment

  535. that is pursuing them

  536. in the name of God

  537. and doing so so forcefully,

  538. James is telling them

  539. that they are

  540. the true people of God.

  541. That as they cry out,

  542. they are connecting themselves

  543. to the history

  544. of God's people

  545. and they are serving

  546. God's true King,

  547. the Lord Jesus Christ.

  548. The one who is Himself,

  549. the God who rescues His people

  550. when they call on His name.

  551. And the wonder is

  552. that in less than 40 years

  553. from James' writing here,

  554. the Lord acted on those cries.

  555. He saw what was going on

  556. and He judged the nation.

  557. These oppressors

  558. who lived on the earth

  559. in luxury

  560. and in self-indulgence

  561. have fattened their hearts

  562. and the day of slaughter

  563. came in AD 70.

  564. The Roman armies

  565. burnt Jerusalem to the ground.

  566. They destroyed the temple.

  567. As the symbol

  568. of old Israel's rebellion.

  569. Jesus promised this

  570. in Matthew 24

  571. and it came to pass.

  572. Jesus kept His word

  573. and He will keep it again

  574. when He comes

  575. to vindicate His people.

  576. When He comes

  577. to destroy His enemies.

  578. When He comes

  579. to rescue His church

  580. from their suffering.

  581. God hears His people.

  582. God responds

  583. when His people

  584. call on His name.

  585. When the pressure

  586. of the negative world

  587. threatens to squeeze us

  588. into its mold.

  589. Don't forget this.

  590. God hears the cries

  591. of His people.

  592. God hears the cries of His people.

  593. So don't step back.

  594. Don't be fearful.

  595. Call on the God

  596. who hears

  597. and who will answer.

  598. God comes

  599. where He's wanted.

  600. Do you want Him?

  601. Do you see it

  602. as a priority

  603. to call on Him

  604. in the daily battles

  605. for faithfulness?

  606. Some days

  607. it feels like

  608. there are moment

  609. by moment

  610. these battles

  611. for faithfulness

  612. because the pressure

  613. to give in

  614. the pressure

  615. to concede

  616. just to go with the flow

  617. for the sake

  618. of not being

  619. that person

  620. those battles

  621. can just come

  622. like rapid fire

  623. some days.

  624. If we will make it

  625. as Christians

  626. in these days

  627. we need to go

  628. to new levels

  629. of prayer.

  630. We need to fight

  631. to make it a habit

  632. that gets so ingrained

  633. in us

  634. that it almost becomes

  635. a part of who you are.

  636. But above all

  637. as we listen in

  638. on James'

  639. prophetic rebuke

  640. here of the oppressors

  641. of this scattered

  642. community of saints

  643. let it remind you

  644. that the alternative

  645. to faithfulness

  646. is just not worth it

  647. in the end.

  648. It isn't.

  649. Whether you're tempted

  650. to retaliate

  651. to the persecution

  652. with the same anger

  653. and hostility

  654. as the world

  655. or you look

  656. hopefully

  657. or desperately

  658. to the apparent

  659. freedom of another

  660. way of life

  661. remember that God

  662. sees and He judges

  663. those who turn

  664. their back on Him.

  665. He sees and He judges

  666. those who reject

  667. His Son

  668. the Lord Jesus.

  669. It's not worth it.

  670. But also

  671. take heart

  672. be encouraged

  673. that in the midst

  674. of your struggles

  675. God hears

  676. the cries

  677. of His people.

  678. when you put

  679. your faith

  680. in the Lord

  681. Jesus Christ

  682. for salvation

  683. you are united

  684. to His beloved

  685. Son

  686. and the Lord

  687. looks on you

  688. with love

  689. and acceptance

  690. and He delights

  691. to hear your voice.

  692. So as He is

  693. growing you

  694. in Christ-likeness

  695. on the path

  696. of cross-shaped

  697. discipleship

  698. as He's making you

  699. take up your cross

  700. daily and follow

  701. the Lord Jesus

  702. as Jesus told us

  703. is page one

  704. of discipleship

  705. it is essential

  706. if we are going

  707. to be faithful

  708. disciples

  709. that we die

  710. to ourselves

  711. and we follow Him

  712. on that path

  713. of self-denial

  714. and He sends

  715. trials into our lives

  716. to enable us

  717. to do that

  718. to force us

  719. to have to do that

  720. more and more

  721. and to draw us

  722. to Him

  723. as He is making

  724. you more like Jesus

  725. remember that

  726. you can cry out

  727. to Him

  728. and just as He did

  729. with the Lord Jesus

  730. He will lead us

  731. through the suffering

  732. and one day

  733. having made us

  734. more like Christ

  735. He will vindicate us

  736. and justice will be done

  737. and He will bring us

  738. into the peace

  739. and security

  740. of glory

  741. slow down

  742. look up

  743. and keep on

  744. let's pray together
