  1. Bible's open to John 10.

  2. John 10 verses 22 to 42.

    John 10:22–42

  3. !

  4. John 10 verses 22.

    John 10:22

  5. It was winter and Jesus is walking around the edge of the temple in the colonnade of Solomon.

  6. It stretches around the perimeter of the temple.

  7. It would be very busy, particularly at festival time.

  8. That's where this argument takes place.

  9. And the argument is about what lies right at the heart of John's Gospel.

  10. That is Jesus' identity.

  11. So do you remember what John's purpose is in writing this Gospel?

  12. We've talked about it many times, haven't we?

  13. You can see Jesus did many other signs in the presence of his disciples, but they're not written in this book.

  14. But John says these are written for the express purpose that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God,

  15. and that by believing you might have life in his name.

  16. And so the central question, right at the heart of John's Gospel, is Jesus' identity, who he is, and faith in him.

  17. And that is what this argument is all about.

  18. We don't know actually if voices were raised, but if you look at verse 31, it certainly seems it's about to get violent.

  19. His Jewish opponents pick up bricks.

  20. They pick up stones to stone him.

  21. Verse 39, they sought to arrest him, but he escaped from their hands.

  22. And at the very end of this passage, Jesus gets out of Jerusalem very wisely,

  23. where people are trying to kill him, and he crosses over to the River Jordan.

  24. And verse 42, many people believed in him there.

  25. And what I want to do is very quickly go through the passage, and then kind of step back and see what issues are at stake.

  26. The argument kicks off in verse 24.

  27. The Jews gathered round him, they said to him,

  28. How long will you keep us in suspense?

  29. If you are the Christ, tell us plainly.

  30. We're nearly halfway through John's Gospel.

  31. For nine and a half chapters, Jesus has been teaching about himself and the miracles.

  32. And they still think his identity is a bit of a mystery.

  33. As recently as verse 14 of chapter 10, Jesus said,

  34. I am the good shepherd, I know my own and my own know me.

  35. So Jesus' response to them, to ask and tell us plainly,

  36. Jesus says in verse 25,

  37. I told you, and you don't believe.

  38. The works that I do in my Father's name, bear witness about me.

  39. Not only have I told you on numerous occasions who I am,

  40. but all my works, by which he means his miracles,

  41. surely they're a big clue as to who I am.

  42. You see, it's not that you haven't had the question answered,

  43. or that my identity has been hidden,

  44. it's just you haven't liked what you've heard.

  45. And you haven't liked what you've seen.

  46. I've just told you, I am the good shepherd.

  47. My sheep know me and I know them.

  48. And the only reason that you're still asking this question is because

  49. you're not my sheep.

  50. You're not one of my people.

  51. You're not one of the people that God, my Father,

  52. has given to me to belong to me forever.

  53. Look at verse 28.

  54. I give them eternal life.

  55. And they will never perish,

  56. and no one will snatch them out of my hand.

  57. But then he says,

  58. I'm not the only one who's keeping them safe.

  59. My Father who's given them to me is greater than all,

  60. and no one is able to snatch them out of my Father's hands.

  61. Jesus is saying,

  62. he and I,

  63. my Father and I,

  64. work so closely together

  65. in looking after the sheep,

  66. the only conclusion that you can come to

  67. is verse 30,

  68. I and the Father are one.

  69. Is that plain enough for you?

  70. The temperature rises,

  71. verse 31,

  72. the Jews pick up stones again to stone him.

  73. They did it in verse,

  74. in chapter 8,

  75. and Jesus gives them the slip then,

  76. and he does again.

  77. He deflects that anger,

  78. he avoids getting stoned.

  79. Jesus tries a different tactic.

  80. He asks the question,

  81. verse 32,

  82. I've shown you many good works,

  83. beautiful works,

  84. from the Father,

  85. for which of them are you going to stone me?

  86. Those stones which you've got in your hands,

  87. for which of my many miracles

  88. are you going to kill me for?

  89. Maybe it's the healing

  90. of the man of his blindness in chapter 9.

  91. Maybe it's for feeding 5,000 people

  92. in the wilderness in chapter 6.

  93. Maybe it's for healing a man

  94. who's been paralyzed for 38 years,

  95. chapter 5,

  96. or bringing a boy back

  97. from the verge of death,

  98. chapter 5.

  99. Those terrible things I've done.

  100. Take your pick.

  101. Which of the beautiful things

  102. that I have done

  103. deserve death,

  104. Jesus asks.

  105. Verse 33,

  106. the Jews answer him,

  107. it is not for a good work

  108. that we're going to stone you,

  109. but for blasphemy,

  110. because you,

  111. being a man,

  112. make yourself God.

  113. Can you see that the plainness

  114. of what Jesus said

  115. in verse 30

  116. has been understood?

  117. They had registered,

  118. they'd got what Jesus was saying,

  119. even if they hadn't liked it

  120. or accepted it,

  121. they understood it.

  122. The next bit

  123. is a little bit complicated,

  124. but basically Jesus says,

  125. let me give you two reasons

  126. why you shouldn't stone me

  127. for equating myself with God,

  128. for claiming to be equal with God.

  129. The first reason

  130. is that the Bible itself

  131. calls humans

  132. both gods and his sons.

  133. Seems strange to us.

  134. The Bible calls humans

  135. both gods and his sons.

  136. It may seem strange to us,

  137. especially the first bit,

  138. but Jesus quotes Psalm 82

  139. to back that up.

  140. See, he says,

  141. if you want to stone me

  142. for blasphemy,

  143. for calling myself God's son,

  144. if you want to be consistent,

  145. you have to accuse God himself

  146. of blasphemy

  147. because he called

  148. other humans his sons.

  149. And I guess that's a bit

  150. of a problem for you,

  151. for you to accuse God

  152. of blasphemy.

  153. He then gives them

  154. a second reason

  155. not to stone him.

  156. If you have a problem

  157. with me and me a man

  158. calling himself God,

  159. well, I'm undeniably

  160. doing the things

  161. that only God could do.

  162. So again,

  163. the only conclusion

  164. that you could come to

  165. is at the end of verse 38,

  166. that the Father is in me

  167. and I am in the Father.

  168. Again,

  169. they sought to arrest him,

  170. but he escaped

  171. from their hands.

  172. That's the argument.

  173. They are the contentious issues

  174. of John chapter 10.

    John 10 chapter mention

  175. And what I want to do

  176. in the rest of our time

  177. is dig just into the imagery

  178. that Jesus uses

  179. in verse 14.

  180. And so there's three points.

  181. My sheep is point number one.

  182. Not my sheep is point number two.

  183. And then the shepherd

  184. is point number three.

  185. First, his sheep.

  186. There are five hallmarks

  187. of people who are his sheep.

  188. That's very helpful

  189. for us tonight.

  190. There are five marks

  191. of every sheep

  192. that belongs to Jesus

  193. who have him as their shepherd.

  194. The first mark

  195. of being one of Jesus' sheep

  196. is verse 27.

  197. They listen to my voice.

  198. It's not that they

  199. just can hear,

  200. but they listen.

  201. They listen to him.

  202. Being one of Jesus' sheep

  203. means that you listen

  204. to his authoritative voice

  205. in Scripture.

  206. First of all,

  207. they listen to him.

  208. The second mark

  209. of his sheep of Jesus

  210. is that they're known by him.

  211. Verse 27.

  212. My sheep hear my voice

  213. and I know them.

  214. I think that's really important

  215. for you and I

  216. to grasp about Christianity.

  217. Christianity is about,

  218. listen to this,

  219. knowing Jesus

  220. and more importantly,

  221. being known by him.

  222. Christianity is a two-way relationship.

  223. We know him

  224. and he knows us

  225. as those who belong to him.

  226. The third mark

  227. of one of Jesus' sheep,

  228. they hear my voice,

  229. I know them

  230. and they follow me.

  231. So when they hear Jesus speak

  232. with authority in their lives

  233. and when they see

  234. where Jesus is leading them

  235. and what he's calling them to

  236. in their lives,

  237. they follow him.

  238. They obey him

  239. because he is their shepherd.

  240. Their obedience is patchy,

  241. to say the least.

  242. Sometimes the sheep

  243. are willfully disobedient.

  244. But we still remain

  245. his sheep after all

  246. because over all,

  247. sheep who belong to Jesus

  248. want to do what he says

  249. in their lives

  250. because they trust him.

  251. They trust that he is

  252. their good shepherd.

  253. Their good shepherd

  254. who has laid down his life

  255. for them

  256. and so they follow him.

  257. And that is how fourthly

  258. he is able

  259. to give them eternal life.

  260. Verse 28,

  261. I give them eternal life

  262. and they shall perish

  263. and no one will be able

  264. to snatch them

  265. out of my hands.

  266. Because Jesus died

  267. and rose again

  268. defeating death,

  269. he can give his sheep

  270. eternal life.

  271. Eternal life

  272. that only he has to give.

  273. All humans

  274. have souls

  275. which are immortal.

  276. but only his sheep

  277. have eternal life.

  278. Not just eternal existence.

  279. They have eternal life

  280. as a gift.

  281. And that means

  282. that they,

  283. his sheep,

  284. they and they alone

  285. will never perish.

  286. The fifth mark

  287. of Jesus' sheep

  288. is that those sheep

  289. are given,

  290. are not only given

  291. the gift of eternal life.

  292. But they themselves

  293. are a gift

  294. given by God the Father

  295. to God the Son.

  296. Just look with me

  297. what Jesus says

  298. in verse 28.

  299. It's not only

  300. that they are given

  301. eternal life,

  302. but they themselves,

  303. the sheep,

  304. are a gift

  305. given by God the Father

  306. to God the Son.

  307. Look at how Jesus

  308. puts it in verse 28.

  309. I give them eternal life

  310. and they shall never perish.

  311. And no one will snatch

  312. them out of my hand.

  313. It's wonderful.

  314. My Father who has

  315. given them to me

  316. is greater than all.

  317. And no one is able

  318. to snatch them

  319. out of the Father's hand.

  320. And we know,

  321. don't we,

  322. we talk about the gift

  323. that goes on giving.

  324. We say that expression,

  325. don't we?

  326. But here,

  327. you have a giver

  328. who never quite

  329. lets go of the gift.

  330. Can you see that?

  331. the Father gives

  332. to Jesus

  333. the sheep

  334. to keep safe

  335. as their good shepherd

  336. forever.

  337. But safe as they are

  338. in Jesus' hands,

  339. it's as if they never

  340. really leave

  341. the Father's hands

  342. in the first place.

  343. He is the giver

  344. who never,

  345. quite,

  346. never quite lets go

  347. of the sheep.

  348. How about that

  349. for security?

  350. When you go home

  351. tonight,

  352. most of us

  353. on our doors

  354. before we go to bed

  355. will have two locks

  356. on our front door.

  357. Two locks

  358. on the front door,

  359. why?

  360. Why isn't one lock

  361. enough?

  362. Two locks

  363. to keep you safe.

  364. In our homes,

  365. there will be

  366. a double security.

  367. Well,

  368. the sheep

  369. who belong to Jesus

  370. have this same thing

  371. forever,

  372. double security.

  373. His hand

  374. wrapped around them

  375. for all eternity.

  376. And the Father's hand

  377. doing

  378. the same thing.

  379. So before you go

  380. to bed tonight,

  381. before you go

  382. up the stairs,

  383. remember that when

  384. you double lock

  385. the door tonight,

  386. there's this beautiful

  387. picture,

  388. there's this double security.

  389. You are in Jesus' hands,

  390. you're in the Father's hands.

  391. And so his sheep

  392. hear him,

  393. know him,

  394. follow him.

  395. He gives them

  396. eternal life

  397. and he gives them

  398. to Jesus

  399. to keep safe

  400. forever.

  401. Do you recognize

  402. yourself as one

  403. of those sheep?

  404. Does that resonate

  405. with you?

  406. If you do,

  407. there are five reasons

  408. there,

  409. aren't there,

  410. for you to thank

  411. Jesus that he is

  412. your good shepherd.

  413. But if you don't,

  414. if you don't recognize

  415. yourself tonight

  416. as one of Jesus'

  417. sheep,

  418. you might recognize

  419. yourself in the group

  420. he describes next.

  421. Secondly,

  422. not his sheep.

  423. And it's clear

  424. from the way

  425. that Jesus is speaking

  426. that people

  427. who are not

  428. his sheep

  429. are the opposite

  430. of those who are.

  431. It's very simple.

  432. So,

  433. they don't listen

  434. to him

  435. and they don't

  436. know him

  437. and they are not

  438. known by him

  439. as belonging to him.

  440. They don't follow him.

  441. They don't want

  442. to do what

  443. he tells them

  444. to do.

  445. It's just not

  446. interesting,

  447. it's not relevant

  448. for them,

  449. it's not that

  450. they're necessarily

  451. ignorant of him.

  452. And the people

  453. who Jesus first

  454. said these words

  455. to,

  456. they had seen

  457. exactly the same

  458. thing as the

  459. sheep had seen.

  460. They had heard

  461. exactly the same

  462. thing as what

  463. the sheep had

  464. heard from him.

  465. but they just

  466. didn't believe

  467. what they'd seen

  468. and heard from

  469. Jesus.

  470. And so the

  471. question is

  472. why not?

  473. And the answer

  474. to that question

  475. is the surprise

  476. of the passage.

  477. The question,

  478. the answer to that

  479. question is not

  480. what we expect,

  481. it's not what we

  482. want to hear.

  483. Have a look at

  484. verse 25.

  485. Jesus answered

  486. them,

  487. I told you

  488. and you do

  489. not believe

  490. the works

  491. that I do

  492. in my Father's

  493. name bear

  494. witness about

  495. me.

  496. You have

  497. heard,

  498. you have

  499. seen,

  500. what everyone

  501. else has

  502. seen and

  503. heard.

  504. But verse 26,

  505. what's the

  506. reason?

  507. You do not

  508. believe because

  509. you are not

  510. among my

  511. sheep.

  512. Jesus does

  513. not say what

  514. we would be a

  515. whole lot more

  516. comfortable with.

  517. He doesn't

  518. say you

  519. don't believe

  520. you are not

  521. one of my

  522. sheep.

  523. you don't

  524. believe you

  525. are not

  526. one of my

  527. sheep.

  528. He says

  529. because you

  530. are not

  531. one of my

  532. sheep,

  533. you don't

  534. believe.

  535. Being a

  536. sheep or

  537. not determines

  538. whether you

  539. believe or

  540. not.

  541. Does that

  542. make sense?

  543. You're looking

  544. at me a little

  545. bit puzzled.

  546. Does it?

  547. Let me just

  548. repeat it.

  549. Okay.

  550. He doesn't

  551. say you

  552. don't

  553. believe you

  554. are not

  555. one of my

  556. sheep.

  557. He says

  558. because you

  559. are not

  560. one of my

  561. sheep,

  562. you don't

  563. believe.

  564. Being a

  565. sheep or

  566. not is

  567. what determines

  568. whether you

  569. believe or

  570. not.

  571. Not the other

  572. way around,

  573. which begs the

  574. question,

  575. how does

  576. someone become

  577. one of his

  578. sheep?

  579. if you

  580. have to be

  581. one in the

  582. first place

  583. to believe in

  584. him,

  585. and the

  586. answer to

  587. that question

  588. is implied

  589. in John

    John 10 chapter mention

  590. chapter 10,

  591. but I think

  592. it's clearer

  593. maybe in

  594. John chapter 6.

    John 6 chapter mention

  595. Do you

  596. remember that?

  597. Jesus said

  598. to them,

  599. I am the

  600. bread of

  601. life.

  602. He changes

  603. the metaphor.

  604. He's using

  605. a different

  606. picture there

  607. to explain

  608. his identity.

  609. I am the

  610. bread of

  611. life.

  612. Whoever

  613. comes to

  614. me shall

  615. not hunger

  616. and whoever

  617. believes in

  618. me shall

  619. never thirst.

  620. So coming

  621. to

  622. Jesus,

  623. believing

  624. in

  625. Jesus,

  626. they are

  627. the same

  628. thing.

  629. And then

  630. John 6

    John 6:38

  631. verse 38

  632. says,

  633. all that

  634. the Father

  635. gives me

  636. will come

  637. to me,

  638. and whoever

  639. comes to

  640. me I

  641. will never

  642. cast out.

  643. And then

  644. verse 44,

  645. no one

  646. can come

  647. to me

  648. unless the

  649. Father

  650. draws them,

  651. and I

  652. will raise

  653. them up

  654. on the

  655. last day.

  656. So how

  657. do you

  658. come to

  659. Jesus?

  660. How do

  661. you believe

  662. in Jesus?

  663. Well first,

  664. the Father

  665. has to

  666. draw you

  667. to him.

  668. Switch back

  669. to the

  670. shepherd and

  671. the sheep

  672. analogy.

  673. The Father

  674. has to

  675. make you

  676. one of

  677. his sheep.

  678. And if

  679. he does

  680. that to

  681. you,

  682. if he

  683. draws you

  684. to Jesus

  685. and makes

  686. you one

  687. of his

  688. sheep,

  689. then you

  690. will come

  691. to him,

  692. you will

  693. believe in

  694. him,

  695. you will

  696. listen to

  697. his voice,

  698. and you

  699. will know

  700. him and

  701. you will

  702. be secured

  703. in his

  704. hands

  705. forever.

  706. But if

  707. he doesn't

  708. do that

  709. for you,

  710. you won't

  711. be any

  712. of those

  713. things.

  714. No one

  715. can come

  716. to me

  717. unless the

  718. Father draws

  719. them.

  720. Now we

  721. like to

  722. think of

  723. it being

  724. the other

  725. way around

  726. because that

  727. puts us

  728. in charge,

  729. doesn't it?

  730. it puts

  731. us in

  732. control,

  733. whether we

  734. choose to

  735. believe in

  736. Jesus or

  737. not,

  738. whether or

  739. not we

  740. come to

  741. him.

  742. The way

  743. Jesus puts

  744. it in

  745. John 6

  746. and in

  747. our

  748. passage

  749. today,

  750. John 10,

  751. puts the

  752. Father in

  753. charge.

  754. He is

  755. in control

  756. of who

  757. believes in

  758. Jesus or

  759. not,

  760. of who

  761. is a

  762. sheep or

  763. not,

  764. and

  765. instinctively

  766. when we

  767. hear that,

  768. we don't

  769. like it.

  770. But it

  771. gets worse

  772. if you come

  773. back to

  774. John 10.

  775. if not

  776. being his

  777. sheep is

  778. the opposite

  779. of being

  780. one of

  781. his sheep,

  782. not only

  783. do we

  784. not listen

  785. to him

  786. and are

  787. not known

  788. by him

  789. and not

  790. follow him,

  791. we are

  792. not given

  793. to him

  794. by the

  795. Father.

  796. And we

  797. are not

  798. given

  799. eternal

  800. life.

  801. We are

  802. not safe

  803. in his

  804. hands and

  805. the Father's

  806. hands

  807. forever.

  808. We will

  809. exist

  810. forever

  811. beyond

  812. this body

  813. and life

  814. on this

  815. earth

  816. but not

  817. in a

  818. way that

  819. you could

  820. call

  821. life

  822. in any

  823. way.

  824. What Jesus

  825. calls it

  826. here,

  827. he calls

  828. it

  829. perishing.

  830. That's how

  831. you will

  832. exist.

  833. And so

  834. again,

  835. let me say

  836. tonight,

  837. if you

  838. recognise

  839. yourself

  840. as not

  841. being one

  842. of Jesus'

  843. sheep,

  844. sheep,

  845. that may

  846. well offend

  847. you,

  848. mightn't it?

  849. And that

  850. might well

  851. provoke you.

  852. Why can't

  853. you be the

  854. one who

  855. decides

  856. whether or

  857. not you

  858. are one

  859. of his

  860. sheep?

  861. And if

  862. you can't

  863. be the

  864. one,

  865. then why

  866. do you

  867. seem to

  868. be responsible

  869. for that?

  870. Facing the

  871. prospect of

  872. eternal

  873. perishing

  874. rather than

  875. eternal

  876. life.

  877. And if

  878. that is

  879. something that

  880. troubles you

  881. or confuses

  882. you or

  883. irritates

  884. you,

  885. please,

  886. please,

  887. ask a

  888. question of

  889. me or

  890. one of

  891. the elders

  892. afterwards.

  893. But can I

  894. also say

  895. this?

  896. If you

  897. recognise

  898. yourself as

  899. not one

  900. of Jesus'

  901. sheep

  902. tonight,

  903. and your

  904. main reaction

  905. as you

  906. recognise

  907. that,

  908. it makes

  909. you really

  910. sad,

  911. because you

  912. would actually

  913. rather like

  914. to be one

  915. of his

  916. sheep.

  917. You would

  918. really like

  919. to be one

  920. of his

  921. sheep.

  922. has it

  923. ever

  924. occurred to

  925. you that

  926. that in

  927. itself might

  928. be the

  929. clearest

  930. indicator that

  931. you've had

  932. that the

  933. father is

  934. right now

  935. through the

  936. words of

  937. John 10,

  938. as God's

  939. word is

  940. preached,

  941. it is

  942. drawing you.

  943. He is

  944. drawing you.

  945. He is

  946. drawing you

  947. to his

  948. son.

  949. He is

  950. making you

  951. into something

  952. that you

  953. are not

  954. yet,

  955. but may

  956. well be

  957. by becoming

  958. one of

  959. his

  960. sheep.

  961. The

  962. sheep,

  963. not his

  964. sheep,

  965. and then

  966. finally the

  967. shepherd.

  968. Again,

  969. there are

  970. five things

  971. that he

  972. says one

  973. himself,

  974. and all

  975. of them

  976. are massive.

  977. First of

  978. all,

  979. Jesus

  980. performs

  981. miracles.

  982. It's one

  983. of the

  984. things that

  985. Jesus is

  986. well known

  987. for doing,

  988. isn't it?

  989. But the

  990. fact is,

  991. he still

  992. did them.

  993. He healed

  994. a blind

  995. man,

  996. a paralyzed

  997. man.

  998. He fed

  999. 5,000

  1000. people in

  1001. the next

  1002. chapter.

  1003. He will

  1004. actually raise

  1005. a dead

  1006. man back

  1007. to life.

  1008. And those

  1009. arguing with

  1010. him in

  1011. this passage

  1012. don't dispute

  1013. that he did

  1014. any of

  1015. those things.

  1016. They don't

  1017. say you

  1018. never did

  1019. those things,

  1020. you can't

  1021. do them.

  1022. They just

  1023. don't like

  1024. his assertion

  1025. that he

  1026. can only

  1027. do it

  1028. because God

  1029. the Father

  1030. is doing

  1031. it through

  1032. him.

  1033. The

  1034. miracles

  1035. of

  1036. Jesus,

  1037. what do

  1038. you make

  1039. of them?

  1040. What

  1041. conclusion

  1042. do they

  1043. bring you

  1044. to about

  1045. him?

  1046. The second

  1047. thing that

  1048. Jesus says

  1049. about himself

  1050. is that

  1051. he and

  1052. the Father

  1053. are one.

  1054. Verse 30,

  1055. we've seen

  1056. it already,

  1057. I and the

  1058. Father are

  1059. one.

  1060. And there's

  1061. something very

  1062. similar at

  1063. the end

  1064. of verse 38,

  1065. the Father

  1066. is in me

  1067. and I

  1068. in the

  1069. Father.

  1070. that is

  1071. the only

  1072. conclusion

  1073. Jesus says

  1074. that you

  1075. should come

  1076. to about

  1077. his miracles.

  1078. Not that

  1079. he and

  1080. the Father

  1081. are the

  1082. same person,

  1083. but they

  1084. are about

  1085. the same

  1086. thing.

  1087. He and

  1088. the Father

  1089. are on

  1090. the same

  1091. page.

  1092. They are

  1093. eternally

  1094. synchronised

  1095. and united

  1096. in their

  1097. purpose and

  1098. intention.

  1099. That is a

  1100. huge claim

  1101. for anyone

  1102. to make

  1103. about God.

  1104. I and

  1105. the Father

  1106. are one.

  1107. And that

  1108. is why

  1109. they actually

  1110. want to

  1111. kill him.

  1112. Which

  1113. means that

  1114. for today

  1115. all those

  1116. who object

  1117. and there's

  1118. lots of

  1119. ways,

  1120. different ways

  1121. to object

  1122. to that

  1123. claim,

  1124. they are

  1125. wrong if

  1126. Jesus is

  1127. right.

  1128. If he

  1129. and the

  1130. Father

  1131. are one,

  1132. totally

  1133. united in

  1134. purpose

  1135. and in

  1136. intention.

  1137. And so

  1138. that means

  1139. Muslims

  1140. are wrong

  1141. about

  1142. Allah

  1143. if

  1144. Jesus

  1145. is

  1146. right.

  1147. It means

  1148. that

  1149. atheists

  1150. are wrong

  1151. about

  1152. God's

  1153. existence

  1154. because

  1155. there was

  1156. once a

  1157. human

  1158. being

  1159. who

  1160. walked

  1161. this

  1162. earth

  1163. in

  1164. history

  1165. 2000

  1166. years

  1167. ago

  1168. whose

  1169. existence

  1170. was

  1171. fully

  1172. attested

  1173. who

  1174. did

  1175. what

  1176. only

  1177. God

  1178. can

  1179. do.

  1180. It

  1181. means

  1182. Buddhists

  1183. are

  1184. wrong

  1185. and

  1186. Hindus

  1187. are

  1188. wrong

  1189. if

  1190. Jesus

  1191. is

  1192. right.

  1193. He

  1194. and the

  1195. Father

  1196. are

  1197. one.

  1198. He

  1199. is

  1200. ruling

  1201. out

  1202. all

  1203. other

  1204. alternatives.

  1205. The

  1206. third

  1207. thing

  1208. is

  1209. he

  1210. is

  1211. God's

  1212. Son.

  1213. He

  1214. is

  1215. not

  1216. the

  1217. same

  1218. person

  1219. as

  1220. the

  1221. Father.

  1222. He

  1223. is

  1224. the

  1225. Son

  1226. of

  1227. God

  1228. the

  1229. Father.

  1230. But

  1231. he

  1232. is

  1233. just

  1234. as

  1235. much

  1236. God

  1237. as

  1238. the

  1239. Father.

  1240. the

  1241. fourth

  1242. thing

  1243. he

  1244. is

  1245. the

  1246. good

  1247. shepherd.

  1248. Sheep

  1249. need

  1250. a

  1251. shepherd

  1252. to

  1253. thrive

  1254. and

  1255. survive.

  1256. In

  1257. fact

  1258. all

  1259. sheep

  1260. need

  1261. a

  1262. shepherd

  1263. regardless

  1264. of how

  1265. robust

  1266. and

  1267. self

  1268. sufficient

  1269. they

  1270. are

  1271. regardless

  1272. of

  1273. whether

  1274. they

  1275. believe

  1276. in

  1277. the

  1278. existence

  1279. of

  1280. a

  1281. shepherd.

  1282. They

  1283. need

  1284. one.

  1285. And

  1286. how

  1287. good

  1288. it

  1289. is

  1290. to

  1291. know

  1292. that

  1293. the

  1294. shepherd

  1295. that

  1296. God

  1297. the

  1298. Father

  1299. has

  1300. provided

  1301. is

  1302. a

  1303. good

  1304. shepherd.

  1305. one

  1306. who

  1307. lays

  1308. down

  1309. his

  1310. life

  1311. for

  1312. the

  1313. sheep.

  1314. And

  1315. the

  1316. fifth

  1317. thing

  1318. the

  1319. last

  1320. thing

  1321. Jesus

  1322. says

  1323. about

  1324. himself

  1325. is

  1326. he

  1327. is

  1328. the

  1329. giver

  1330. of

  1331. eternal

  1332. life.

  1333. Because

  1334. he

  1335. voluntarily

  1336. laid

  1337. down

  1338. his

  1339. life

  1340. he

  1341. was

  1342. able

  1343. to

  1344. take

  1345. it

  1346. up

  1347. again.

  1348. Have

  1349. a look

  1350. at

  1351. verse

  1352. 18.

  1353. Jesus

  1354. says

  1355. no

  1356. one

  1357. takes

  1358. it

  1359. from

  1360. me

  1361. but

  1362. I

  1363. lay

  1364. it

  1365. down

  1366. of

  1367. my

  1368. own

  1369. accord.

  1370. I

  1371. have

  1372. authority

  1373. to

  1374. lay

  1375. it

  1376. down

  1377. and

  1378. I

  1379. have

  1380. the

  1381. authority

  1382. to

  1383. take

  1384. it

  1385. up

  1386. again.

  1387. Because

  1388. Jesus

  1389. had

  1390. the

  1391. authority

  1392. to

  1393. take

  1394. up

  1395. his

  1396. life

  1397. again

  1398. authority

  1399. over

  1400. death

  1401. he

  1402. has

  1403. through

  1404. that

  1405. victory

  1406. eternal

  1407. life

  1408. to

  1409. give.

  1410. His

  1411. resurrection

  1412. is not

  1413. just

  1414. good news

  1415. for

  1416. him

  1417. it

  1418. is

  1419. good

  1420. news

  1421. for

  1422. others

  1423. only

  1424. because

  1425. he

  1426. is

  1427. generous
