  1. Well, please do turn in your Bibles back to the book of Acts, the Acts of the Apostles, chapter 20, where our reading was earlier on.

  2. For the Lord to speak to us in his word.

  3. Our Heavenly Father, we ask that the same Holy Spirit who caused these words to be written for our learning,

  4. the same Holy Spirit by whom the Lord Jesus himself was conceived in the womb of the Virgin,

  5. that he would be at work in us to bring your word to life in our hearts,

  6. to make us willing listeners and believers.

  7. And we ask it in the name of Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.

  8. Amen.

  9. I'm going to focus on verse 28 of Acts, chapter 20.

    Acts 20 chapter mention

  10. So do find verse 28.

  11. Andrew, sitting over on the side, over there.

  12. Andrew, as of today, you have a new duty.

  13. It is a duty to care for, to shepherd the Church of God and to pay careful attention to them and to yourself, as this verse says.

  14. Now, we're going to come to that and to what your duty is.

  15. But we, that is Andrew, you, but all the rest of us too, need to see what that is founded upon.

  16. Because this verse in the centre of Paul's speech to the Ephesian elders says something truly remarkable,

  17. which is this, that today, what we have witnessed happening right here, just a few minutes ago,

  18. is an act of the same God for the same purpose and for the same people as the great day of Christ's crucifixion at Calvary.

  19. Now, that is a remarkable thing.

  20. Today, Andrew, the Holy Spirit has made you an overseer.

  21. That is what this verse describes ordination as.

  22. Now, strictly speaking, today, in fact, has been the outward recognition and affirmation,

  23. solemnisation, to use the old word, by the Church, by prayer and the laying on of hands,

  24. of the Spirit's work in making you an overseer, which stretches back over years,

  25. all through Andrew's life, and it includes his upbringing and his conversion, his growth in the faith,

  26. all those who discipled him, his training at this church and others, his assessment by the presbytery,

  27. and including his examination just three weeks ago.

  28. But today is the day when the Holy Spirit has publicly set you aside to be an overseer,

  29. as it's translated in this verse.

  30. It's the same word where we get the word bishop from.

  31. But the astonishing thing about what Paul said in Miletus to the Ephesian elders

  32. is that this action of the Spirit setting aside men to be overseers of the church, of the flock,

  33. is inseparably joined in God's action and plan to what he did at Calvary.

  34. Indeed, in one sense, they are two parts of the same work.

  35. So, Andrew, your ordination today as an elder and overseer in Christ's church

  36. is part of how God is carrying into effect the work that he accomplished at Jesus' cross.

  37. Now, that is a big thing for Paul to say.

  38. It's a big thing for us to think about.

  39. So, I want us to make sure that we've sort of followed what Paul is saying and understood it.

  40. So, here is the first big thing that I'm going to try and convince us of,

  41. that God ordains ministers by his Spirit to shepherd the flock bought by his Son.

  42. God ordains ministers by his Spirit to shepherd the flock bought by his Son.

  43. Let's give a bit of a backstory.

  44. So, we're in a town called Miletus.

  45. It's a port town on the coast of what's now Turkey.

  46. It was Asia Minor, it was called then.

  47. It's a few miles away from Ephesus.

  48. Ephesus was also a port city then.

  49. But Paul is sailing to Jerusalem, but he's deliberately bypassed Ephesus

  50. because I think he just knows he knows too many people there,

  51. and it'll take too long if he stops.

  52. And so, he's gone past there.

  53. He's stopped a few miles further down the coast at Miletus.

  54. But he sends a message to the elders of the church in Ephesus

  55. to travel the few miles to Miletus to meet with him

  56. because he wants to speak to them.

  57. And the reason he wants to speak to them is because

  58. he knows he's never going to see them again.

  59. And this is his chance to give them a final charge,

  60. a final explanation,

  61. and an exhortation for them to understand

  62. the task that they have been given as elders in Christ's church

  63. and to carry it out diligently.

  64. And the result is this wonderful chapter, Acts 20,

  65. with probably the most important description

  66. of the work of an elder that the Bible has.

  67. There are others that are important too.

  68. But this one is particularly significant.

  69. And it's a long description.

  70. We read all of it earlier on.

  71. But there's actually only one command,

  72. which is in one verse right in the middle, verse 28,

  73. which is, it's sort of like,

  74. if ever you had one of those pinwheel windmills as a child,

  75. you know, which you blow and it spins around.

  76. This is the pin in the middle that the whole thing rotates around.

  77. Verse 28,

  78. Now, look carefully at what is said here.

  79. The Holy Spirit,

  80. the Father,

  81. God,

  82. and the Son,

  83. Jesus Christ,

  84. though he's not mentioned by name,

  85. the blood of Christ is there at the end.

  86. They're all present in this verse.

  87. The Father,

  88. Son,

  89. and Spirit

  90. are all active and present,

  91. working together to achieve the single work of the salvation of the flock,

  92. as they're described here.

  93. This is how the church of Jesus is pictured.

  94. The sheep for whom he cares.

  95. Indeed, actually, that image is here twice.

  96. It's hidden in our translation,

  97. where it says to care for the church of God.

  98. That is a word that means shepherd.

  99. Both that, care for, and flock both come from the same Greek word for sheep.

  100. And so the church is the sheep whom God has intended,

  101. planned from eternity,

  102. and put into action his work to gather them,

  103. to care for them,

  104. and to bring them to the full enjoyment for eternity

  105. of all the things that God has intended for them.

  106. It is one grand plan,

  107. a single purpose that God,

  108. that the one God has.

  109. And how is he achieving that?

  110. Well, in this one verse,

  111. you can see there are two parts to it.

  112. The first is at the very end of the verse,

  113. that he obtained them with his own blood.

  114. And the second is that the Holy Spirit has made certain men overseers,

  115. shepherds, pastors, and elders.

  116. Those are all the same people.

  117. This is addressed to the elders of the church.

  118. This is the,

  119. well, it's either the session of the church in Ephesus,

  120. or it could possibly be the presbytery,

  121. depending on whether by now they've got more than one congregation.

  122. We don't know that.

  123. But they are all the ordained elders of the church

  124. who have been gathered together,

  125. and they're described with all of these words.

  126. And so you see that Paul here presents it as being a two-part,

  127. if you like, work of salvation.

  128. There is the accomplishment,

  129. the purchasing,

  130. the buying of the people of God

  131. by the blood of Christ.

  132. And then there is the application of that,

  133. the bringing it to reality,

  134. the gathering and the caring of people

  135. so that they may benefit from what Christ did at the cross.

  136. And that is achieved by the Holy Spirit appointing overseers.

  137. God intends both.

  138. They're part of the one plan of salvation of the one God.

  139. My first ever car was a Vauxhall Chevette.

  140. I bought it for 400 pounds.

  141. I went halves with a friend, 200 pounds each.

  142. It had a magnificent engine.

  143. As I discovered, two days after I bought it,

  144. it had an absolutely terrible clutch.

  145. The result being that you tried to move off,

  146. and the engine went vroom,

  147. and the car didn't move anywhere.

  148. Because the power was being generated,

  149. but there was no transmission of power to the wheels,

  150. and therefore to the roads.

  151. And therefore it cost me rather more than 400 pounds,

  152. as you can imagine, to get that fixed.

  153. Now, Mr. Vauxhall, when he designed the Vauxhall Chevette,

  154. no doubt intended both.

  155. There should be an engine,

  156. and there should be a clutch

  157. that would transmit the power to the road.

  158. Now, that's kind of the same picture here.

  159. God intended and achieved,

  160. at the cross of Christ,

  161. the full salvation of his people.

  162. But he always intended

  163. that his people would receive that salvation,

  164. that the power of what was achieved at the cross

  165. would be transmitted to his flock

  166. by the men appointed as overseers.

  167. The Spirit of God would apply

  168. the work that the Son of God had achieved.

  169. Now, this should strike us,

  170. well, it should strike the elders in Ephesus,

  171. it should especially strike those men who are ordained,

  172. and Andrew, that now includes you,

  173. as being an extraordinarily high requirement

  174. for an elder.

  175. What an incredible privilege

  176. to have something bought

  177. with something so expensive.

  178. Now, I asked the children beforehand

  179. whether any of them had ever saved up

  180. for something,

  181. kept your pocket money

  182. for a number of weeks or months

  183. to buy something you really wanted.

  184. When I was about 10,

  185. Nintendo released the first Donkey Kong game.

  186. And those of you who are young

  187. won't even believe what it looked like.

  188. It was about the size of two iPhones,

  189. sort of hinged together,

  190. but it did nothing other than the Donkey Kong game.

  191. Couldn't do anything else on it.

  192. But I wanted one so much

  193. that it cost £20.

  194. I saved up for months and months and months.

  195. And I can still remember the feeling

  196. of going to the bank

  197. and getting the first ever £20 note

  198. that I'd ever owned

  199. and walking to the shop.

  200. I don't know what it was,

  201. but what shop sold that kind of thing.

  202. But anyway,

  203. and handing it over

  204. and buying this thing.

  205. I treasured my Donkey Kong game.

  206. In fact, I treasured it so much

  207. that I still have it

  208. in a drawer

  209. in my study today.

  210. It doesn't work anymore,

  211. but nevertheless,

  212. I still have it.

  213. Now,

  214. something that costs lots of money

  215. will be something

  216. that you value enormously.

  217. Even more

  218. if someone else

  219. paid the price

  220. and entrusts it to you.

  221. I remember my very elderly grandmother

  222. in her 90s

  223. showing me the ring

  224. that my grandfather had bought her.

  225. She'd worn it,

  226. obviously when they were married,

  227. but for more than 50 years as a widow.

  228. It was worn so thin

  229. that it almost had fallen off her finger.

  230. And yet she valued it

  231. because it had been bought for her

  232. by one who loved her so much.

  233. We even talk sometimes

  234. of things being bought in blood,

  235. don't we?

  236. Our freedom

  237. in this country

  238. with the blood of the soldiers

  239. of the Second World War.

  240. Nothing's more valuable,

  241. I think,

  242. than that.

  243. Any Star Wars fans will know

  244. that's the whole idea

  245. of the film Rogue One.

  246. I know I'm a little bit retro here,

  247. but maybe you're into this,

  248. that the plans for the Death Star,

  249. so essential

  250. in order to defeat the Empire,

  251. had to be bought

  252. at the cost of the blood

  253. of all of

  254. the people who went

  255. in the Rogue One ship

  256. to go and steal them.

  257. And the film ends

  258. with them finally,

  259. by Princess Leia,

  260. entrusting them to R2-D2.

  261. Protect these.

  262. They are so valuable.

  263. Well,

  264. that's a silly image.

  265. But what we are told here

  266. about the value

  267. of Jesus' flock

  268. is beyond price.

  269. They were bought

  270. with God's own blood.

  271. Now,

  272. that's a phrase

  273. that has really puzzled

  274. people who have read this.

  275. How can Paul speak

  276. of God's own blood?

  277. I mean,

  278. God doesn't have a body.

  279. How can God

  280. have blood?

  281. But actually,

  282. that is exactly

  283. the point

  284. of

  285. the Son of God

  286. becoming man

  287. and living with us.

  288. The Eternal Son

  289. became one of us

  290. and took flesh

  291. and blood

  292. so that

  293. when he went

  294. to the cross,

  295. the blood he bled

  296. for us

  297. would be

  298. God's blood.

  299. For Jesus

  300. is God himself

  301. in human flesh

  302. and the value

  303. of the blood

  304. that ran down

  305. his face,

  306. that stained

  307. the cross,

  308. that was drunk

  309. by the ground

  310. beneath his cross,

  311. the value

  312. of that blood

  313. is beyond

  314. price

  315. and that

  316. is the currency

  317. with which

  318. you,

  319. as a Christian,

  320. have been bought.

  321. it's the currency

  322. with which

  323. the flock

  324. of Christ

  325. has been bought.

  326. There is

  327. nothing on

  328. earth

  329. so valuable

  330. as the church

  331. of Jesus Christ

  332. for nothing

  333. has been bought

  334. with such

  335. a high

  336. price.

  337. but Jesus

  338. did not

  339. bleed

  340. God's

  341. own

  342. blood

  343. for the

  344. salvation

  345. of his

  346. sheep

  347. at Calvary

  348. with the

  349. intention

  350. that

  351. they should

  352. then be

  353. just left

  354. defenseless

  355. to be

  356. destroyed.

  357. Even

  358. less did

  359. he bleed

  360. God's

  361. own

  362. blood

  363. with the

  364. intention

  365. that

  366. he then

  367. wouldn't

  368. do

  369. anything

  370. in order

  371. to go

  372. and gather

  373. these

  374. sheep

  375. together

  376. into a

  377. flock.

  378. He didn't

  379. bleed

  380. God's

  381. own

  382. blood

  383. and

  384. then

  385. kind

  386. of

  387. just

  388. think

  389. well

  390. let's

  391. just

  392. kind

  393. of

  394. leave

  395. it

  396. to

  397. !

  398. has

  399. in

  400. every

  401. age

  402. of

  403. the

  404. church

  405. appointed

  406. that

  407. there

  408. will

  409. be

  410. overseers

  411. who

  412. are

  413. also

  414. elders

  415. who

  416. are

  417. also

  418. shepherds

  419. who

  420. will

  421. care

  422. for

  423. this

  424. flock.

  425. That

  426. is what

  427. we have

  428. witnessed

  429. today

  430. with

  431. Andrew's

  432. ordination.

  433. We

  434. have

  435. witnessed

  436. God

  437. here

  438. today

  439. in

  440. 2025

  441. putting

  442. into

  443. practice

  444. his

  445. plan

  446. to

  447. gather

  448. nurture

  449. and

  450. save

  451. his

  452. flock.

  453. Not

  454. just

  455. today

  456. but for

  457. many years

  458. into the

  459. future.

  460. Now

  461. therefore I

  462. need to

  463. say to

  464. you

  465. I can

  466. say this

  467. to you

  468. because I'm

  469. not a

  470. member of

  471. this

  472. congregation

  473. so to

  474. you who

  475. are the

  476. congregation

  477. of this

  478. church

  479. Andrew's

  480. ordination

  481. is an

  482. act of

  483. love of

  484. the same

  485. God to

  486. you

  487. and it

  488. is an

  489. act out

  490. of the

  491. same

  492. love

  493. which he

  494. exerted

  495. at the

  496. cross of

  497. Christ.

  498. Now it

  499. is not

  500. only to

  501. you

  502. also

  503. part of

  504. the

  505. intention

  506. is that

  507. overseers

  508. shepherds

  509. pastors

  510. elders

  511. should

  512. bring in

  513. more

  514. sheep

  515. that's

  516. all part

  517. of it

  518. isn't

  519. it

  520. part of

  521. the

  522. work

  523. of

  524. a

  525. shepherd

  526. in

  527. Christ

  528. church

  529. is to

  530. go and

  531. gather

  532. the

  533. flock

  534. to

  535. keep

  536. on

  537. growing

  538. it

  539. and

  540. that's

  541. a

  542. vital

  543. thing

  544. for

  545. them

  546. to

  547. do

  548. and

  549. Paul

  550. we

  551. haven't

  552. referred

  553. to

  554. the

  555. rest

  556. of

  557. the

  558. speech

  559. yet

  560. but

  561. the

  562. whole

  563. of

  564. the

  565. rest

  566. of

  567. Paul's

  568. speech

  569. here

  570. is

  571. about

  572. him

  573. describing

  574. his

  575. ministry

  576. so

  577. that

  578. the

  579. Ephesian

  580. elders

  581. know

  582. what

  583. their

  584. ministry

  585. should

  586. look

  587. like

  588. they're

  589. called

  590. to

  591. be

  592. shepherds

  593. now

  594. Paul

  595. was

  596. their

  597. shepherd

  598. first

  599. and

  600. they're

  601. supposed

  602. to

  603. imitate

  604. him

  605. and

  606. one

  607. of

  608. the

  609. things

  610. he

  611. did

  612. was

  613. that

  614. he

  615. first

  616. came

  617. to

  618. them

  619. and

  620. told

  621. them

  622. about

  623. the

  624. gospel

  625. of

  626. Christ

  627. when

  628. they

  629. had

  630. never

  631. heard

  632. it

  633. before

  634. verse

  635. 21

  636. he

  637. testified

  638. to

  639. Jews

  640. and

  641. Greeks

  642. of

  643. repentance

  644. to

  645. all

  646. God

  647. and

  648. faith

  649. in

  650. our

  651. Lord

  652. Jesus

  653. Christ

  654. now

  655. that

  656. will

  657. undoubtedly

  658. be

  659. a

  660. major

  661. part

  662. of

  663. Andrew's

  664. ministry

  665. and

  666. we

  667. have

  668. already

  669. prayed

  670. and

  671. we

  672. will

  673. go

  674. on

  675. praying

  676. that

  677. the

  678. Lord

  679. will

  680. use

  681. him

  682. to

  683. bring

  684. many

  685. people

  686. who

  687. today

  688. do

  689. not

  690. know

  691. of

  692. Christ

  693. to

  694. membership

  695. in

  696. this

  697. flock

  698. those

  699. whom

  700. God

  701. has

  702. bought

  703. but

  704. as

  705. yet

  706. do

  707. not

  708. know

  709. it

  710. to

  711. understand

  712. what

  713. they

  714. have

  715. been

  716. bought

  717. for

  718. but

  719. in

  720. the

  721. first

  722. instance

  723. it

  724. is

  725. you

  726. in

  727. this

  728. church

  729. for

  730. whom

  731. God

  732. has

  733. sent

  734. his

  735. spirit

  736. in

  737. order

  738. to

  739. set

  740. Andrew

  741. aside

  742. to

  743. be

  744. your

  745. shepherd

  746. it's

  747. an

  748. indication

  749. of

  750. his

  751. care

  752. for

  753. you

  754. to

  755. feed

  756. you

  757. and

  758. care

  759. for

  760. you

  761. therefore

  762. it is

  763. essential

  764. that you

  765. must pray

  766. for him

  767. you must

  768. receive

  769. him

  770. as from

  771. the hand

  772. of the

  773. Lord

  774. Jesus

  775. Christ

  776. you must

  777. honour

  778. him

  779. thank

  780. God

  781. for

  782. him

  783. hear

  784. his

  785. teaching

  786. gladly

  787. encourage

  788. him

  789. submit

  790. to

  791. him

  792. out

  793. of

  794. thankfulness

  795. to

  796. Christ

  797. all of

  798. those

  799. things

  800. are

  801. part

  802. of

  803. the

  804. duty

  805. the

  806. glad

  807. and

  808. happy

  809. duty

  810. that

  811. is

  812. yours

  813. as a

  814. result

  815. of

  816. today

  817. but now

  818. I need

  819. to turn

  820. to you

  821. Andrew

  822. and to

  823. say

  824. some

  825. things

  826. more

  827. directly

  828. to

  829. you

  830. and this

  831. is

  832. the second

  833. part of

  834. what I

  835. have to

  836. say

  837. you

  838. must

  839. as Paul

  840. says

  841. here

  842. pay

  843. attention

  844. to

  845. yourself

  846. and

  847. to

  848. all

  849. the

  850. flock

  851. pay

  852. careful

  853. attention

  854. to

  855. yourself

  856. and

  857. to

  858. all

  859. the

  860. flock

  861. this

  862. is

  863. the

  864. reason

  865. why

  866. you

  867. must

  868. do

  869. so

  870. because

  871. you

  872. have

  873. been

  874. set

  875. aside

  876. to

  877. shepherd

  878. those

  879. bought

  880. with

  881. nothing

  882. less

  883. than

  884. the

  885. blood

  886. of

  887. Christ

  888. the

  889. oversight

  890. the

  891. shepherding

  892. must

  893. be

  894. what

  895. your

  896. life

  897. is

  898. all

  899. about

  900. if

  901. you

  902. look

  903. back

  904. to

  905. verse

  906. 24

  907. this

  908. in a

  909. sense

  910. must

  911. now

  912. be

  913. your

  914. watch

  915. word

  916. as

  917. Paul

  918. says

  919. but

  920. I

  921. do

  922. not

  923. account

  924. my

  925. life

  926. of

  927. any

  928. value

  929. nor

  930. as

  931. precious

  932. to

  933. myself

  934. if

  935. only

  936. I

  937. may

  938. finish

  939. my

  940. course

  941. and

  942. the

  943. ministry

  944. that

  945. I

  946. received

  947. from

  948. the

  949. Lord

  950. Jesus

  951. to

  952. testify

  953. to

  954. the

  955. gospel

  956. of

  957. the

  958. grace

  959. of

  960. Christ

  961. so

  962. you

  963. must

  964. pay

  965. attention

  966. to

  967. yourself

  968. and

  969. to

  970. the

  971. flock

  972. let's

  973. do

  974. those

  975. two

  976. things

  977. one

  978. at

  979. a

  980. time

  981. you

  982. must

  983. pay

  984. attention

  985. to

  986. yourself

  987. it

  988. is

  989. your

  990. duty

  991. to

  992. maintain

  993. yourself

  994. as

  995. a

  996. fit

  997. instrument

  998. for

  999. the

  1000. Holy

  1001. Spirit

  1002. to

  1003. do

  1004. this

  1005. great

  1006. work

  1007. through

  1008. Paul

  1009. describes

  1010. in

  1011. verse

  1012. 33

  1013. his

  1014. own

  1015. purity

  1016. of

  1017. heart

  1018. I

  1019. coveted

  1020. no

  1021. one's

  1022. silver

  1023. or

  1024. gold

  1025. or

  1026. apparel

  1027. that

  1028. means

  1029. clothing

  1030. I

  1031. didn't

  1032. allow

  1033. myself

  1034. to

  1035. get

  1036. into

  1037. this

  1038. for

  1039. the

  1040. money

  1041. or

  1042. for

  1043. other

  1044. benefits

  1045. that

  1046. come

  1047. from

  1048. it

  1049. you

  1050. too

  1051. must

  1052. watch

  1053. yourself

  1054. you

  1055. must

  1056. cultivate

  1057. and

  1058. preserve

  1059. your

  1060. holiness

  1061. and

  1062. the

  1063. godliness

  1064. of

  1065. your

  1066. life

  1067. Andrew

  1068. you

  1069. must

  1070. be

  1071. rigorous

  1072. in

  1073. putting

  1074. your

  1075. sinful

  1076. flesh

  1077. to

  1078. death

  1079. don't

  1080. allow

  1081. sinful

  1082. habits

  1083. to

  1084. rise

  1085. up

  1086. in

  1087. you

  1088. and

  1089. when

  1090. they

  1091. do

  1092. because

  1093. they

  1094. will

  1095. you

  1096. must

  1097. not

  1098. allow

  1099. them

  1100. to

  1101. remain

  1102. don't

  1103. let

  1104. yourself

  1105. grow

  1106. fond

  1107. or

  1108. tolerant

  1109. of

  1110. the

  1111. weeds

  1112. that

  1113. grow

  1114. in

  1115. the

  1116. garden

  1117. of

  1118. your

  1119. soul

  1120. it

  1121. must

  1122. be

  1123. your

  1124. daily

  1125. duty

  1126. to

  1127. examine

  1128. yourself

  1129. and

  1130. to

  1131. put

  1132. those

  1133. things

  1134. to

  1135. death

  1136. positively

  1137. you

  1138. must

  1139. cultivate

  1140. patterns

  1141. of

  1142. worship

  1143. and

  1144. of

  1145. prayer

  1146. of

  1147. repentance

  1148. and

  1149. praise

  1150. of

  1151. reading

  1152. of

  1153. scripture

  1154. and

  1155. the

  1156. praying

  1157. of

  1158. the

  1159. psalms

  1160. for

  1161. yourself

  1162. one

  1163. of the

  1164. greatest

  1165. temptations

  1166. and

  1167. the

  1168. easiest

  1169. adjustments

  1170. to

  1171. make

  1172. in

  1173. a

  1174. life

  1175. of

  1176. a

  1177. minister

  1178. is

  1179. to

  1180. cut

  1181. down

  1182. on

  1183. private

  1184. prayer

  1185. and

  1186. devotion

  1187. to

  1188. make

  1189. space

  1190. for

  1191. all

  1192. the

  1193. multitude

  1194. of

  1195. other

  1196. things

  1197. that

  1198. you

  1199. need

  1200. to

  1201. do

  1202. but

  1203. you

  1204. must

  1205. not

  1206. do

  1207. so

  1208. paying

  1209. careful

  1210. attention

  1211. to

  1212. yourself

  1213. means

  1214. you

  1215. must

  1216. develop

  1217. your

  1218. abilities

  1219. your

  1220. knowledge

  1221. your

  1222. skills

  1223. in

  1224. teaching

  1225. you

  1226. must

  1227. identify

  1228. your

  1229. weaknesses

  1230. and

  1231. work

  1232. hard

  1233. to

  1234. overcome

  1235. them

  1236. you

  1237. must

  1238. strive

  1239. to

  1240. live

  1241. the

  1242. kind

  1243. of

  1244. life

  1245. which

  1246. is

  1247. an

  1248. example

  1249. to

  1250. all

  1251. Paul

  1252. speaks

  1253. about

  1254. that

  1255. as

  1256. well

  1257. verse

  1258. 35

  1259. in

  1260. that

  1261. by

  1262. working

  1263. hard

  1264. in

  1265. this

  1266. way

  1267. we

  1268. must

  1269. help

  1270. the

  1271. weak

  1272. hypocrisy

  1273. is the

  1274. easiest

  1275. thing

  1276. for a

  1277. minister

  1278. of

  1279. the

  1280. gospel

  1281. to

  1282. achieve

  1283. all

  1284. you

  1285. have

  1286. to

  1287. do

  1288. is

  1289. do

  1290. nothing

  1291. to

  1292. oppose

  1293. it

  1294. and

  1295. you

  1296. will

  1297. become

  1298. a

  1299. hypocrite

  1300. to

  1301. teach

  1302. one

  1303. thing

  1304. while

  1305. your

  1306. life

  1307. starts

  1308. to

  1309. look

  1310. like

  1311. something

  1312. else

  1313. it's

  1314. terrifyingly

  1315. easy

  1316. ask

  1317. yourself

  1318. with

  1319. every

  1320. sermon

  1321. you

  1322. prepare

  1323. am

  1324. I

  1325. myself

  1326. doing

  1327. the

  1328. things

  1329. which

  1330. I'm

  1331. calling

  1332. God's

  1333. people

  1334. to

  1335. do

  1336. practice

  1337. your

  1338. discipline

  1339. make

  1340. sure

  1341. your

  1342. life

  1343. is

  1344. well

  1345. ordered

  1346. organize

  1347. and plan

  1348. what

  1349. you

  1350. will

  1351. do

  1352. when

  1353. fight

  1354. the

  1355. wasting

  1356. of

  1357. time

  1358. fight

  1359. the

  1360. lusts

  1361. of

  1362. your

  1363. heart

  1364. the

  1365. moment

  1366. they

  1367. arise

  1368. be

  1369. ready

  1370. for

  1371. reflection

  1372. all

  1373. these

  1374. things

  1375. you

  1376. are

  1377. called

  1378. to

  1379. do

  1380. pay

  1381. careful

  1382. attention

  1383. to

  1384. yourself

  1385. but

  1386. alongside

  1387. that

  1388. you

  1389. must

  1390. pay

  1391. careful

  1392. attention

  1393. to

  1394. the

  1395. flock

  1396. pay

  1397. careful

  1398. attention

  1399. to

  1400. the

  1401. flock

  1402. now

  1403. it's

  1404. obvious

  1405. why

  1406. isn't

  1407. it

  1408. now

  1409. it is

  1410. as if

  1411. you

  1412. have

  1413. been

  1414. given

  1415. an

  1416. incredibly

  1417. precious

  1418. heirloom

  1419. bought

  1420. by

  1421. someone

  1422. you

  1423. love

  1424. and

  1425. said

  1426. !

  1427. remember

  1428. this

  1429. there

  1430. is

  1431. nothing

  1432. more

  1433. valuable

  1434. in

  1435. the

  1436. world

  1437. than

  1438. the

  1439. flock

  1440. over

  1441. whom

  1442. you

  1443. have

  1444. been

  1445. placed

  1446. therefore

  1447. pay

  1448. careful

  1449. attention

  1450. to

  1451. them

  1452. be

  1453. diligent

  1454. in

  1455. your

  1456. preparation

  1457. you'll

  1458. soon

  1459. learn

  1460. that it's

  1461. impossible

  1462. to

  1463. prepare

  1464. as

  1465. well

  1466. as

  1467. you

  1468. would

  1469. like

  1470. to

  1471. that's

  1472. always

  1473. true

  1474. but

  1475. never

  1476. let

  1477. that

  1478. be

  1479. an

  1480. excuse

  1481. for

  1482. preparing

  1483. less

  1484. well

  1485. than

  1486. you

  1487. could

  1488. or

  1489. should

  1490. be

  1491. diligent

  1492. in

  1493. considering

  1494. what

  1495. you

  1496. should

  1497. teach

  1498. Paul

  1499. says

  1500. in

  1501. verse

  1502. 27

  1503. he

  1504. didn't

  1505. shrink

  1506. from

  1507. declaring

  1508. the

  1509. whole

  1510. counsel

  1511. of

  1512. God

  1513. everything

  1514. that

  1515. the

  1516. flock

  1517. needs

  1518. here

  1519. you

  1520. have

  1521. the

  1522. privilege

  1523. of

  1524. having

  1525. Paul

  1526. tell

  1527. you

  1528. what

  1529. to

  1530. do

  1531. sometimes

  1532. and

  1533. but

  1534. you

  1535. won't

  1536. always

  1537. and

  1538. you

  1539. must

  1540. be

  1541. careful

  1542. and

  1543. prayerful

  1544. am

  1545. I

  1546. covering

  1547. all

  1548. that

  1549. the

  1550. Lord's

  1551. people

  1552. need

  1553. to

  1554. hear

  1555. am

  1556. I

  1557. giving

  1558. the

  1559. sheep

  1560. the

  1561. full

  1562. diet

  1563. that

  1564. they

  1565. need

  1566. for

  1567. them

  1568. to

  1569. be

  1570. healthy

  1571. you

  1572. must

  1573. pay

  1574. careful

  1575. attention

  1576. to

  1577. their

  1578. protection

  1579. verse

  1580. 29

  1581. I

  1582. know

  1583. that

  1584. after

  1585. my

  1586. departure

  1587. fierce

  1588. wolves

  1589. will

  1590. come

  1591. in

  1592. among

  1593. you

  1594. not

  1595. sparing

  1596. the

  1597. flock

  1598. from

  1599. among

  1600. your

  1601. own

  1602. cells

  1603. will

  1604. arise

  1605. men

  1606. speaking

  1607. twisted

  1608. things

  1609. to

  1610. draw

  1611. away

  1612. the

  1613. disciples

  1614. after

  1615. them

  1616. it's

  1617. your

  1618. task

  1619. to

  1620. protect

  1621. the

  1622. church

  1623. it

  1624. can

  1625. be

  1626. an

  1627. unpleasant

  1628. task

  1629. you'll

  1630. have

  1631. to

  1632. read

  1633. about

  1634. things

  1635. that

  1636. you

  1637. would

  1638. much

  1639. rather

  1640. not

  1641. think

  1642. about

  1643. listen

  1644. to

  1645. speakers

  1646. who

  1647. are

  1648. awful

  1649. and

  1650. teachers

  1651. who

  1652. speak

  1653. of

  1654. wickedness

  1655. but

  1656. don't

  1657. shirk

  1658. the

  1659. task

  1660. for

  1661. you

  1662. must

  1663. do

  1664. it

  1665. for

  1666. the

  1667. protection

  1668. of

  1669. the

  1670. people

  1671. the

  1672. flock

  1673. for

  1674. whom

  1675. Christ

  1676. shed

  1677. the

  1678. blood

  1679. of

  1680. God

  1681. you

  1682. must

  1683. be

  1684. ready

  1685. to

  1686. do

  1687. all

  1688. of

  1689. these

  1690. things

  1691. and

  1692. it

  1693. is

  1694. an

  1695. enormous

  1696. task

  1697. today

  1698. you

  1699. have

  1700. been

  1701. set

  1702. aside

  1703. so

  1704. that

  1705. your

  1706. life

  1707. no

  1708. longer

  1709. is

  1710. about

  1711. yourself

  1712. your

  1713. life

  1714. from

  1715. today

  1716. is

  1717. about

  1718. shepherding

  1719. the

  1720. flock

  1721. of

  1722. God

  1723. pay

  1724. careful

  1725. attention

  1726. to

  1727. yourself

  1728. and

  1729. to

  1730. all

  1731. the

  1732. flock

  1733. which

  1734. well

  1735. I don't

  1736. know how

  1737. we're all

  1738. feeling

  1739. about

  1740. all

  1741. of

  1742. that

  1743. perhaps

  1744. some

  1745. of

  1746. you

  1747. are

  1748. feeling

  1749. a bit

  1750. sorry

  1751. for

  1752. Andrew

  1753. now

  1754. I've

  1755. said

  1756. all

  1757. of

  1758. those

  1759. things

  1760. Andrew

  1761. maybe

  1762. you

  1763. yourself

  1764. are

  1765. a little

  1766. overawed

  1767. by it

  1768. and rightly

  1769. so

  1770. who is

  1771. equal

  1772. to a

  1773. task

  1774. like

  1775. this

  1776. how can

  1777. Andrew

  1778. or Paul

  1779. or Reuben

  1780. or any

  1781. of the

  1782. elders

  1783. who've

  1784. been

  1785. gathered

  1786. here

  1787. how can

  1788. any

  1789. man

  1790. do

  1791. what

  1792. has

  1793. been

  1794. set

  1795. aside

  1796. here

  1797. how can

  1798. how can

  1799. God

  1800. put

  1801. into

  1802. the

  1803. hands

  1804. of

  1805. people

  1806. like

  1807. us

  1808. something

  1809. so

  1810. valuable

  1811. it was

  1812. bought

  1813. with

  1814. God's

  1815. own

  1816. blood

  1817. how can

  1818. any of

  1819. us

  1820. imagine

  1821. that we

  1822. are

  1823. fit

  1824. for

  1825. such

  1826. a

  1827. charge

  1828. well the

  1829. answer is

  1830. we are

  1831. not

  1832. but

  1833. remember

  1834. Andrew

  1835. the rest

  1836. of the

  1837. elders

  1838. of this

  1839. church

  1840. and I

  1841. say this

  1842. to myself

  1843. as well

  1844. we are

  1845. instruments

  1846. in God's

  1847. hands

  1848. appointed

  1849. by the

  1850. Holy

  1851. Spirit

  1852. and

  1853. equipped

  1854. by

  1855. him

  1856. the

  1857. Spirit

  1858. calls

  1859. us

  1860. to

  1861. the

  1862. task

  1863. Andrew

  1864. the

  1865. Spirit

  1866. has

  1867. called

  1868. you

  1869. to

  1870. this

  1871. task

  1872. and he

  1873. will

  1874. equip

  1875. you

  1876. for

  1877. it

  1878. and so

  1879. what

  1880. does this

  1881. mean

  1882. what do

  1883. we do

  1884. with the

  1885. enormity

  1886. of this

  1887. task

  1888. the answer

  1889. is

  1890. we

  1891. must

  1892. pray

  1893. that's

  1894. the last

  1895. and very

  1896. simple

  1897. thing

  1898. to see

  1899. and I

  1900. think

  1901. this

  1902. beautiful

  1903. scene

  1904. at the

  1905. end

  1906. of it

  1907. verse

  1908. 36

  1909. when he

  1910. had said

  1911. all these

  1912. things

  1913. he knelt

  1914. down

  1915. and prayed

  1916. with

  1917. them

  1918. all

  1919. and that

  1920. they're

  1921. all

  1922. weeping

  1923. and that

  1924. they weep

  1925. with sorrow

  1926. because they're

  1927. not going to

  1928. see Paul

  1929. again

  1930. Paul knows

  1931. by the

  1932. Spirit

  1933. that he's

  1934. never going

  1935. to be a

  1936. free man

  1937. again

  1938. he's going

  1939. to Jerusalem

  1940. he doesn't

  1941. know exactly

  1942. what will

  1943. happen

  1944. but he

  1945. knows he

  1946. will be

  1947. arrested

  1948. and indeed

  1949. Paul is

  1950. never free

  1951. again

  1952. from that

  1953. point

  1954. onwards

  1955. they're

  1956. not going

  1957. to see

  1958. him

  1959. again

  1960. so they're

  1961. deeply

  1962. grieved

  1963. out of

  1964. their love

  1965. for Paul

  1966. but I

  1967. think a

  1968. big part

  1969. of this

  1970. is also

  1971. this sense

  1972. of

  1973. they are

  1974. now the

  1975. ones

  1976. holding

  1977. the baby

  1978. up till

  1979. now it's

  1980. always been

  1981. possible to

  1982. say

  1983. well when

  1984. Paul comes

  1985. we can

  1986. ask him

  1987. what to

  1988. do

  1989. we can

  1990. go to

  1991. Paul

  1992. years ago

  1993. I used

  1994. to run

  1995. a children's

  1996. holiday

  1997. camp

  1998. and

  1999. for the

  2000. first few

  2001. years I

  2002. did it

  2003. I was

  2004. just a

  2005. junior

  2006. leader

  2007. under

  2008. another

  2009. leader

  2010. a chap

  2011. called

  2012. Peter

  2013. who was

  2014. absolutely

  2015. brilliant

  2016. he always

  2017. knew what

  2018. to do

  2019. in every

  2020. circumstance

  2021. and then

  2022. one year

  2023. he asked

  2024. me and

  2025. another

  2026. chap if

  2027. we would

  2028. take over

  2029. and we

  2030. did

  2031. and we

  2032. had one

  2033. year where

  2034. he was

  2035. still

  2036. in charge

  2037. but he

  2038. didn't

  2039. really do

  2040. much

  2041. we ran

  2042. it

  2043. but he

  2044. was

  2045. there

  2046. so we

  2047. could

  2048. go to

  2049. him

  2050. and

  2051. say

  2052. what

  2053. do

  2054. we

  2055. do

  2056. with

  2057. this

  2058. what

  2059. about

  2060. that

  2061. and it

  2062. we

  2063. carried on

  2064. doing it

  2065. for about

  2066. another

  2067. ten years

  2068. and I

  2069. never

  2070. got away

  2071. from the

  2072. thought of

  2073. thinking

  2074. I need

  2075. to ask

  2076. Peter

  2077. what to

  2078. do

  2079. next

  2080. I

  2081. can't

  2082. decide

  2083. what to

  2084. do

  2085. what do

  2086. I do

  2087. I'm not

  2088. big enough

  2089. for this

  2090. job

  2091. and I

  2092. think

  2093. that's

  2094. what these

  2095. elders and

  2096. Ephesus are

  2097. feeling

  2098. it's like

  2099. when Paul

  2100. is gone

  2101. the flock

  2102. is now

  2103. in our

  2104. hands

  2105. what can

  2106. we do

  2107. with a

  2108. task

  2109. like

  2110. this

  2111. how

  2112. are

  2113. we

  2114. equal

  2115. to

  2116. it

  2117. well

  2118. there

  2119. is

  2120. only

  2121. one

  2122. thing

  2123. to

  2124. do

  2125. verse

  2126. 36

  2127. is

  2128. that

  2129. they

  2130. kneel

  2131. down

  2132. and

  2133. they

  2134. pray

  2135. and cry

  2136. to

  2137. the

  2138. Lord

  2139. cry

  2140. to

  2141. the

  2142. Holy

  2143. Spirit

  2144. who

  2145. has

  2146. appointed

  2147. them

  2148. to

  2149. equip

  2150. them

  2151. for

  2152. a

  2153. task

  2154. so

  2155. great

  2156. and

  2157. so

  2158. precious

  2159. and

  2160. that

  2161. therefore

  2162. is

  2163. what

  2164. we

  2165. all

  2166. must

  2167. do

  2168. so

  2169. you

  2170. congregation

  2171. of

  2172. IPC

  2173. Eling

  2174. you

  2175. must

  2176. pray

  2177. diligently

  2178. for

  2179. Andrew

  2180. and for

  2181. all

  2182. your

  2183. elders

  2184. and

  2185. Andrew

  2186. you

  2187. must

  2188. pray

  2189. diligently

  2190. and the

  2191. rest of

  2192. the elders

  2193. you must

  2194. pray

  2195. with him

  2196. we must

  2197. pray for

  2198. the spirit

  2199. to equip

  2200. us

  2201. to equip

  2202. you

  2203. to be

  2204. faithful

  2205. shepherds

  2206. of

  2207. a flock

  2208. of

  2209. a flock

  2210. bought

  2211. with

  2212. the

  2213. blood

  2214. of

  2215. God

  2216. himself

  2217. well

  2218. shall

  2219. we

  2220. do

  2221. that

  2222. right

  2223. now

  2224. let's

  2225. bow

  2226. our heads

  2227. and let's

  2228. pray

  2229. let's
