  1. And turn if you will to Ephesians chapter 1.

    Ephesians 1 chapter mention

  2. And we're going to look at verses 11 to 14.

  3. You might think it's a bit strange to just jump into a chapter and look at those three verses in the middle of Ephesians 1.

  4. And it is.

  5. The reason is I'm speaking at a conference in June.

  6. I wanted a dry run before it.

  7. And so, Ephesians 1, 11, 14.

  8. It turns out that the little church in Ephesus were a little bit discouraged.

  9. They had heard they had been told they believed that Jesus was the Lord of the universe.

  10. And what Jesus was going to do was absolutely huge.

  11. He was going to make the whole world new.

  12. And now they'd heard that the Apostle Paul was in prison.

  13. Just flick over the page to chapter 3 and verse 13.

  14. And Paul says to them,

  15. And so this little church in Ephesus is thinking,

  16. how come Paul, Jesus' apostle, the great preacher of Jesus, is in prison?

  17. It doesn't look good, does it?

  18. The world around them was starting to feel very, very big.

  19. It was not just the Roman authorities that seemed so big.

  20. They put Paul in prison.

  21. But there were these pagan gods that seemed enormous.

  22. And so if you were a member of the little IPC church in Ephesus,

  23. every morning on your way to work,

  24. you would pass this huge temple to the goddess Artemis.

  25. You'd actually be jostled by the crowds of people who every day made their way to this temple to worship.

  26. And day by day you would see this enormous building, crowds of people,

  27. and then you think of your little tiny church gathering,

  28. 15 of you squashed into someone's front room,

  29. drinking instant coffee, eating custard creams.

  30. It just feels that the gods around you, that you used to worship,

  31. were somehow much, much bigger than the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ who you worship now.

  32. And those gods seem to have more of a hold on people's imagination.

  33. The world felt big to the church in Ephesus, and they felt very small.

  34. And it's interesting, isn't it, when Paul prays in his letters for them,

  35. verse 19, he prays a load of things,

  36. but the prayer kind of comes to a climax,

  37. and he prays, I think really interestingly,

  38. which unlocks the book of Ephesians,

  39. is that they would know his incomparably great power,

  40. for us who believe.

  41. Because that power is like the working of his mighty strength.

  42. And so he goes, I want you to know that

  43. the God who's at work in you, there is great power.

  44. And I take it he says that, and he prays that,

  45. because they were feeling powerless, kind of weak.

  46. And he ends the letter, doesn't he, famously,

  47. by saying, stay strong, keep fighting.

  48. And I take it that he says that,

  49. because they didn't feel strong, and they didn't feel like fighting.

  50. And I'm guessing it's not just the church in Ephesus, isn't it?

  51. For us, the world feels big.

  52. It's not just hostile media.

  53. It's not just friends and colleagues

  54. who can't believe that we take the Bible seriously,

  55. they think it's a joke.

  56. It can be work where it's unhappy.

  57. It can be a marriage that's difficult.

  58. It can be a long-term illness,

  59. or the long-term illness of a family member.

  60. And those things loom large.

  61. Or maybe it's just that life is hard.

  62. Or for you, it may be that life is lovely.

  63. And the world around you is so attractive,

  64. and you can feel it pulling you in,

  65. and your career is going well,

  66. your family is happy and healthy,

  67. you are making money,

  68. and you would quite like to make more money,

  69. and get more power.

  70. It's great.

  71. You've got a good social life in London,

  72. and it makes you want more and more,

  73. and you feel those things are just very, very big.

  74. And they've got something of a hold on your heart,

  75. and they seem more powerful in your life than God.

  76. And more grip on your imagination than God.

  77. And the world feels big,

  78. and we're quite small.

  79. And when we think of our prayer lives,

  80. they're weak.

  81. And maybe you sit here,

  82. and you're not as excited about Jesus as you used to be,

  83. and you're painfully aware of your failings.

  84. The plan climaxes, doesn't it, in verse 10,

  85. where Paul talks about Jesus bringing all things

  86. in heaven on earth together

  87. under the lordship of Jesus Christ.

  88. Big, big plan.

  89. And we don't doubt the plan,

  90. but we doubt ourselves.

  91. We wonder,

  92. I'm just not sure I've got the strength

  93. to stick with the plan.

  94. And do you feel that?

  95. I feel that sometimes.

  96. These are great verses in verses 11 to 14.

  97. Because what Paul is rejoicing in,

  98. in these verses,

  99. is that the plan of salvation

  100. does not depend on us

  101. with all our frailties.

  102. It depends on him.

  103. It all depends on God.

  104. And so, yes, we are very small.

  105. And yes, the world is big.

  106. But God is bigger still.

  107. So, four reasons tonight

  108. for you to be confident.

  109. The first is that God has chosen us

  110. to be his.

  111. God has chosen us

  112. to be his.

  113. Paul is saying that God,

  114. in Christ,

  115. has unfolded,

  116. has revealed

  117. his great plan of salvation.

  118. And one day,

  119. Jesus will make all things new.

  120. And on that day,

  121. we will be there,

  122. he says,

  123. because, verse 11,

  124. in him,

  125. in Christ,

  126. we were also chosen.

  127. In him,

  128. we are going to be part

  129. of this big thing.

  130. And the word he uses there

  131. is a little bit different

  132. from the word he uses

  133. in verse 4.

  134. It has the idea

  135. of being chosen

  136. to be an inheritance.

  137. So, if I was writing up my will,

  138. I might say,

  139. I've chosen to give this watch

  140. to Noah.

  141. Which means that one day,

  142. when I die,

  143. it will be Noah's.

  144. And the language

  145. that you find here

  146. is also the language

  147. of the Old Testament,

  148. which is used

  149. when the promised land

  150. was divided up.

  151. When the people of Israel

  152. went into the promised land,

  153. do you remember,

  154. the land was divided up

  155. amongst the tribes of Israel.

  156. And you read there

  157. that the territory of Edom

  158. is chosen for Judah

  159. to inherit.

  160. See,

  161. what that means is

  162. one day,

  163. that plot of land

  164. will be theirs.

  165. And more incredibly,

  166. it's language that God

  167. uses of his people Israel.

  168. They are described

  169. as people chosen

  170. to be his inheritance.

  171. He looks at his people

  172. and he says,

  173. one day you'll be mine.

  174. See what he's saying?

  175. God has chosen us

  176. as his inheritance.

  177. One day we will be his.

  178. Do you see the wonder of that?

  179. We want to be wanted.

  180. We want to be included.

  181. We want to be part of the gang.

  182. We want to be invited.

  183. There are times, aren't there,

  184. where there are things

  185. going on socially

  186. and we tag along.

  187. But we don't know

  188. whether the other people

  189. actually really wanted us there

  190. or whether they intended us

  191. to be there.

  192. But here is the God

  193. of the universe.

  194. I want you for myself

  195. forever, he says.

  196. My precious possession.

  197. Mine.

  198. And do you see how Paul

  199. reassures his readers

  200. that they're part of that?

  201. They may be thinking,

  202. okay, Paul,

  203. you're an apostle,

  204. of course.

  205. You're from a Jewish background.

  206. You were one of the elite

  207. of the elite.

  208. But what about us?

  209. We're not part of

  210. the Jewish elite.

  211. We have got a pagan background.

  212. We're from the wrong side

  213. of the sticks.

  214. We have a shaky faith.

  215. Has he chosen us

  216. like he chose you?

  217. And just look at verse 13.

  218. There's a slight change

  219. in the wording.

  220. He adds in a you also.

  221. In him, you also.

  222. The sort of overview is

  223. we've been chosen.

  224. And they're thinking,

  225. Paul, that's fine.

  226. That's fine for you.

  227. But verse 13,

  228. he makes it explicitly clear.

  229. He says,

  230. in him, you also.

  231. When you hear the word of truth,

  232. the gospel of your salvation,

  233. when you're included in this,

  234. he says,

  235. when you hear the word of truth,

  236. when you hear what God

  237. had done for you

  238. in the Lord Jesus,

  239. that God is calling you

  240. to be part of his plan,

  241. and when you believed

  242. and when you came

  243. to put your trust in him,

  244. you were given an inheritance.

  245. Left to your own devices,

  246. you would never have done that.

  247. And so Paul says to you tonight,

  248. if you are trusting him tonight,

  249. it is not because

  250. you're kind of tagging along

  251. that you've kind of

  252. invited yourself

  253. and you're hoping

  254. he won't mind,

  255. if you're trusting him tonight,

  256. it's because of his work in you.

  257. He has chosen you

  258. like he has chosen us.

  259. And we are all in this

  260. as his people.

  261. That is what we share.

  262. He wants us for himself.

  263. You might feel tonight

  264. that no one wants you.

  265. But Ephesians 1 tells you

  266. that God wants you.

  267. Of course,

  268. in some of our minds,

  269. there will be a little bit

  270. of a worry, won't there,

  271. about this language

  272. of God choosing people.

  273. It raises so,

  274. so many questions.

  275. Why does God choose

  276. some people

  277. and not others?

  278. And we can be tempted,

  279. can't we,

  280. to say,

  281. well, let's say,

  282. it's not God that chooses us.

  283. Let's say we choose God.

  284. That's much easier

  285. to stomach, isn't it?

  286. There's a kind of

  287. democracy about that.

  288. But it raises a whole

  289. set of different problems

  290. and questions.

  291. Because if we are saying

  292. it is not God

  293. choosing,

  294. it is us

  295. who chose God,

  296. well,

  297. think of the sort of God

  298. you end up with.

  299. we end up with a God

  300. who doesn't want us

  301. very much.

  302. You end up with a God

  303. who puts a notice

  304. in the church email,

  305. says,

  306. I'm organising a trip

  307. to the West End

  308. to see a play

  309. and if you want to come,

  310. sign up,

  311. sign up on the link.

  312. Sign up by the end

  313. of the month.

  314. How bothered is he

  315. if I come on the trip

  316. or not?

  317. He's leaving it

  318. down to me.

  319. If you fancy,

  320. sign up to the end

  321. of the offer.

  322. If you don't fancy,

  323. don't sign up.

  324. It's your choice.

  325. And if no one signs up,

  326. well,

  327. the new creation

  328. is empty.

  329. That's how it goes.

  330. Nobody fancied it.

  331. But God,

  332. who is the Father

  333. of the Lord Jesus Christ,

  334. is very bothered.

  335. And he is not just

  336. leaving it up to you

  337. whether you fancy it

  338. or not.

  339. in his love,

  340. God comes to you

  341. in the person

  342. of the Lord Jesus Christ

  343. and he gives you

  344. a personal invitation.

  345. He gives you an offer

  346. you can't refuse.

  347. And through the gospel,

  348. he is calling us

  349. to come and be part

  350. of what he's doing.

  351. And he does love us

  352. and he wants us

  353. to be in on the trip.

  354. He wants us

  355. to be his forever.

  356. And if it is all

  357. about our choosing God,

  358. you end up with a God

  359. who doesn't want us

  360. very much.

  361. And I get a salvation

  362. which is not very safe.

  363. Look at verse 11.

  364. In him,

  365. we have obtained

  366. an inheritance

  367. having been predestined

  368. according to the purpose

  369. of him

  370. who works all things

  371. according to the

  372. counsel of his will.

  373. And so my place

  374. in God's plan

  375. turns on his will.

  376. And the point is,

  377. he is working everything,

  378. everything,

  379. everything out

  380. in conformity

  381. with his will.

  382. In other words,

  383. God wills

  384. what happens

  385. and nothing

  386. can stop it

  387. from happening.

  388. If my salvation

  389. depended on my will,

  390. well, my will

  391. is pretty flaky

  392. and so is yours.

  393. I resolve

  394. to give up chocolate.

  395. How long does that

  396. resolve last for?

  397. Well, about two and a half days

  398. is the average.

  399. If my place

  400. in God's will

  401. hinges

  402. on my resolve

  403. and my power

  404. to see it through,

  405. that is terrifying.

  406. And I think

  407. this is why the Ephesians

  408. are feeling so daunted.

  409. I think

  410. it's why they're so daunted

  411. because the world

  412. feels so big

  413. and we feel so small

  414. and we are not sure

  415. whether we can hold on.

  416. But what Paul wants you

  417. to see

  418. and wants you to know

  419. and wants you actually

  420. to feel

  421. is it's not about

  422. how we hold on

  423. to him,

  424. but it's about how

  425. he holds on to us.

  426. when I walk

  427. with Phoebe

  428. down

  429. Greenford Avenue,

  430. it's quite a main road,

  431. and she will say,

  432. hold my hand.

  433. And I do this little

  434. maneuver like you do

  435. if you're a parent

  436. or you're walking

  437. with a small child.

  438. She puts her hand

  439. in mine

  440. and then I twist my hand

  441. and I hold her arm

  442. because Phoebe's hand

  443. is not very big,

  444. is it?

  445. Phoebe's fingers

  446. are not very strong.

  447. And if she tripped,

  448. she would go flying

  449. if she was just

  450. holding on to me,

  451. but because I am

  452. holding on to her,

  453. she doesn't go flying.

  454. And that is the first reason

  455. why we can be confident

  456. because God has chosen us

  457. to be his

  458. and he has got hold of us.

  459. And when we think

  460. of our weaknesses,

  461. we often think naturally

  462. that the answer is

  463. get a grip.

  464. Get a grip.

  465. But the answer is to remember

  466. that he has got his grip on us.

  467. And when I trip,

  468. he will not let me fall.

  469. He will hold me fast.

  470. And so how do I know

  471. he won't let me go?

  472. And there's a second reason

  473. for us to be confident

  474. because he's got hold of us

  475. and here it is

  476. to the praise of his glory.

  477. That's the reason.

  478. To the praise of his glory.

  479. Do you see the goal of it all?

  480. Why is he working out

  481. his plan of salvation?

  482. Why has he got hold of us?

  483. Can you see it at the end

  484. of verse 12?

  485. To the praise of his glory.

  486. The end of verse 14,

  487. to the praise of his glory.

  488. If I can put it like this,

  489. God is committed

  490. to showing the world

  491. how brilliant he is.

  492. And the world is meant

  493. to look at his salvation.

  494. It is meant to look

  495. at his church

  496. and his people

  497. and say,

  498. wow, God is brilliant.

  499. And that is not because

  500. God is some kind of show-off.

  501. If you're praying

  502. for someone that you love,

  503. somebody who's not

  504. a Christian believer,

  505. what is the best thing

  506. that could ever happen

  507. to them?

  508. The best thing

  509. that could ever happen

  510. to them is that

  511. they would come to see

  512. how brilliant God is.

  513. Because for as long

  514. as they think

  515. that God is

  516. not much good,

  517. they won't give him

  518. the time of day.

  519. And they are missing out.

  520. No, God is committed

  521. to his glory.

  522. And the world

  523. seeing how brilliant

  524. he is.

  525. And that is what gives us

  526. such confidence

  527. in his plan.

  528. Once you see

  529. what is at stake,

  530. his glory is at stake.

  531. And so he will keep you.

  532. You see,

  533. he will never let

  534. his plan

  535. depend on people

  536. like me.

  537. And the reason

  538. God will not

  539. leave his salvation

  540. down to people

  541. like us

  542. is because

  543. the stakes

  544. are too high.

  545. His glory

  546. is at stake.

  547. God is not

  548. going to let

  549. his glory

  550. depend on

  551. weak,

  552. feeble

  553. people

  554. like us.

  555. And that is why

  556. he will not

  557. let us go.

  558. The third

  559. reason to be

  560. confident

  561. is that the

  562. Holy Spirit

  563. is a seal.

  564. Look at verse 13.

  565. The plan

  566. is for the

  567. praise of his glory.

  568. So why

  569. doesn't he leave

  570. it down to us?

  571. That is why

  572. he gives us

  573. his Holy Spirit.

  574. Verse 13.

  575. Look at verse 13.

  576. In him also,

  577. you also,

  578. when you heard

  579. the word of truth,

  580. the gospel of your

  581. salvation,

  582. and believed in him,

  583. were sealed

  584. with the promised

  585. Holy Spirit.

  586. When you heard

  587. the gospel,

  588. and believed,

  589. you were marked

  590. as being in Christ

  591. by a seal.

  592. There was

  593. a mark of ownership.

  594. And you're

  595. driving along

  596. the road,

  597. and you see

  598. cattle,

  599. and branded

  600. into the sign

  601. of the cattle

  602. is a seal

  603. to show you

  604. who the cattle

  605. belonged to.

  606. In school,

  607. having a school

  608. uniform,

  609. do you remember

  610. that?

  611. And your mum

  612. or your dad,

  613. before you went

  614. to the first day

  615. of school,

  616. would sew those

  617. little labels

  618. onto your school

  619. uniform.

  620. Do you remember

  621. those labels?

  622. And they were

  623. kind of sealed,

  624. weren't they?

  625. Those labels

  626. were a seal

  627. to show

  628. it was yours.

  629. And so if you

  630. find a pair

  631. of shorts

  632. that says

  633. Paul Levy

  634. on it,

  635. you would know

  636. it is Paul

  637. Levy's shorts.

  638. It belongs

  639. to him.

  640. But the language

  641. has biblical

  642. connotations as well.

  643. In the Old Testament,

  644. the high priest

  645. was marked

  646. with a seal.

  647. So we read

  648. of how the high priest

  649. wore a seal

  650. on his forehead.

  651. a plate

  652. with it

  653. made of gold.

  654. A plate

  655. made with gold

  656. and on it

  657. the plate

  658. said

  659. holy to the

  660. Lord.

  661. It was a mark

  662. of ownership.

  663. The priest

  664. belongs to God.

  665. But the wonderful

  666. promise

  667. in the Old Testament

  668. is that one day

  669. all of God's

  670. people would

  671. be sealed.

  672. all of God's

  673. people would

  674. know that

  675. they belong

  676. to God.

  677. Let's do one

  678. cross reference.

  679. Come with me

  680. to Isaiah

    Isaiah 44 chapter mention

  681. chapter 44.

  682. It's worth it.

  683. Isaiah chapter 44.

    Isaiah 44 chapter mention

  684. Keep a finger

  685. in Ephesians

    Ephesians 1 chapter mention

  686. chapter 1.

  687. Isaiah 44.

  688. And Isaiah

  689. 44 and

  690. verse 3.

  691. The end

  692. of verse 2.

  693. Isaiah 44.

  694. In verse 2

  695. it says

  696. fear not.

  697. The Lord

  698. says

  699. fear not.

  700. And then in

  701. verse 3

  702. into that fear

  703. he says

  704. for I will

  705. pour water

  706. on the thirsty

  707. land

  708. and streams

  709. on the dry

  710. ground

  711. and I will

  712. pour my

  713. spirit upon

  714. your offspring

  715. and my

  716. blessing on

  717. your descendants.

  718. They shall

  719. spring up

  720. among the

  721. grass

  722. like willows

  723. by flowing

  724. streams

  725. and this

  726. one will

  727. say

  728. I'm the

  729. Lord's.

  730. and another

  731. will call

  732. on the

  733. name of

  734. Jacob

  735. and another

  736. will write

  737. on his

  738. hand

  739. the Lord's

  740. and name

  741. himself

  742. by the

  743. name of

  744. Israel.

  745. It's

  746. prophesying

  747. there that

  748. everyone

  749. will one

  750. day be

  751. able to

  752. say I

  753. belong to

  754. the Lord

  755. not because

  756. of some

  757. gold plate

  758. on their

  759. head

  760. but because

  761. of the

  762. spirit.

  763. The spirit

  764. in their

  765. hearts

  766. that God

  767. will pour

  768. out on

  769. his people.

  770. Do you

  771. see what

  772. the apostle

  773. Paul is

  774. saying in

  775. Ephesians 1?

  776. let's go

  777. back there.

  778. He's

  779. saying this

  780. the Lord

  781. does not

  782. want you

  783. to say

  784. tonight

  785. I hope

  786. that I

  787. am his.

  788. He does

  789. not want

  790. you to

  791. say I

  792. hope

  793. that I

  794. am his.

  795. The Lord

  796. wants us

  797. to be

  798. people who

  799. say I

  800. know I

  801. am his.

  802. I belong

  803. to him.

  804. You

  805. might be

  806. thinking how

  807. do I

  808. know that

  809. I belong

  810. to him?

  811. That I

  812. am his

  813. and I

  814. am in

  815. Christ.

  816. Paul says

  817. God has

  818. marked you

  819. by his

  820. spirit.

  821. Do you

  822. remember

  823. Toy Story?

  824. Have you

  825. watched the

  826. film Toy

  827. Story?

  828. Have you

  829. watched that

  830. one?

  831. It's good

  832. isn't it?

  833. Alright.

  834. Do you

  835. remember the

  836. story Toy

  837. Story?

  838. And so

  839. do you

  840. remember

  841. Woody?

  842. Woody was

  843. the cowboy

  844. wasn't he?

  845. And Woody

  846. had a pair

  847. of boots

  848. on and

  849. what was

  850. written on

  851. the bottom

  852. of Woody's

  853. boots?

  854. Okay.

  855. Pardon?

  856. Andy.

  857. Who was

  858. Andy?

  859. Do you

  860. remember?

  861. Yeah.

  862. The boy

  863. who owned

  864. Woody

  865. wasn't it?

  866. And when

  867. Woody was

  868. unsure or

  869. when Woody

  870. was frightened

  871. he would

  872. look at

  873. his boot

  874. and remember

  875. I belong

  876. to Andy.

  877. In fact

  878. I think

  879. wasn't it

  880. if I remember

  881. rightly

  882. in Toy

  883. Story 2

  884. Andy is

  885. about to

  886. be sent

  887. to Japan

  888. is that

  889. right?

  890. By some

  891. evil toy

  892. dealer

  893. and there's

  894. a moment

  895. in the film

  896. where Woody

  897. looks at his

  898. boot

  899. and he

  900. remembers

  901. I belong

  902. to Andy.

  903. He's

  904. marked

  905. sealed

  906. and what

  907. Paul is

  908. saying is

  909. that God

  910. has marked

  911. us by

  912. his Holy

  913. Spirit

  914. and every

  915. time we

  916. see the

  917. mark of

  918. the Spirit

  919. in our

  920. lives we

  921. ought to

  922. say I

  923. belong to

  924. God.

  925. So the

  926. question in

  927. our mind

  928. is this

  929. what are

  930. the marks

  931. of the

  932. Spirit of

  933. God?

  934. What is

  935. the sign

  936. of the

  937. Holy Spirit

  938. working in

  939. our lives?

  940. Well do

  941. you trust

  942. and rest

  943. and rely

  944. and depend

  945. on the

  946. Lord Jesus

  947. tonight?

  948. Do you

  949. say before

  950. God what

  951. is my

  952. only comfort

  953. in life

  954. and death?

  955. That I

  956. am not

  957. my own

  958. but belong

  959. body and

  960. soul to

  961. the Lord

  962. Jesus

  963. Christ.

  964. Jesus is

  965. my only

  966. hope

  967. and if

  968. that is

  969. what you

  970. believe

  971. that is

  972. a sign

  973. that the

  974. Holy Spirit

  975. is at

  976. work in

  977. you.

  978. You

  979. would

  980. never

  981. say

  982. that.

  983. What do

  984. you pray?

  985. What do

  986. you call

  987. God?

  988. Do you

  989. pray my

  990. Father,

  991. our

  992. Father,

  993. that God

  994. is not

  995. just a

  996. God to

  997. you but

  998. you marvel

  999. that he

  1000. is your

  1001. Father who

  1002. is in

  1003. heaven?

  1004. That is a

  1005. sign of

  1006. the Spirit

  1007. being at

  1008. work in

  1009. you and

  1010. the Spirit

  1011. gives us a

  1012. love for

  1013. the Lord

  1014. Jesus that

  1015. we didn't

  1016. have before.

  1017. There was a

  1018. time when

  1019. we weren't

  1020. interested in

  1021. reading the

  1022. Bible but

  1023. now we've

  1024. got an

  1025. appetite,

  1026. we're

  1027. hungry to

  1028. know more

  1029. of Jesus.

  1030. That is a

  1031. sign that

  1032. you belong

  1033. to him,

  1034. a sign that

  1035. the Spirit

  1036. is at

  1037. work.

  1038. The Spirit

  1039. gives us a

  1040. love for

  1041. God's

  1042. people that

  1043. we never

  1044. had before.

  1045. He longed

  1046. to be with

  1047. God's

  1048. people and

  1049. to belong

  1050. to the

  1051. church.

  1052. That's a

  1053. sign of

  1054. God's Spirit

  1055. being at

  1056. work.

  1057. God's

  1058. we fight with sin,

1059. we didn't have that before,

1060. we didn't used to fight,

1061. we just used to go with the flow,

  1062. we still struggle,

  1063. we still fail,

  1064. but now we fight,

1065. and every time we fight,

1066. if you are fighting tonight,

1067. you might feel you're losing,

  1068. but you're fighting,

1069. that is a sign that you belong to him,

1070. and when you mess up,

  1071. like you often do,

1072. you don't shrug your shoulders,

1073. and think well that's the way it is,

  1074. it hurts,

1075. and there's times when it breaks your heart,

1076. and it never used to,

1077. and there's a sorrow over your sin,

1078. which shows that you have the spirit,

1079. and that you belong to him,

  1080. Spurgeon,

1081. the great kind of Baptist preacher,

1082. he described the Christian life,

1083. as feeling like a young bird,

1084. fighting to get out of an eggshell,

  1085. he says,

  1086. I wasn't yet flying,

  1087. but I'm fighting,

1088. and the fact that he felt constrained,

1089. and he longed for something better,

1090. showed that he was alive,

1091. and he had the spirit,

1092. the mark of having the spirit,

1093. is not perfection is it,

  1094. it's certainly not perfection,

  1095. but it is progress,

  1096. I'm not what I will be,

1097. but I'm not what I used to be,

  1098. the Ephesians are afraid,

  1099. and discouraged,

  1100. and losing heart,

1101. and they look at the culture around them,

1102. and the spiritual forces around them,

  1103. that it's a negative world,

1104. and it seems to have so much of a grip on them,

  1105. and Paul says,

1106. look at the Holy Spirit in your lives,

  1107. the spirit,

  1108. he is God's seal,

  1109. and God is saying,

  1110. fear not,

1111. and I think it's the kind of temperature in our culture,

1112. kind of rises a little bit,

1113. we're getting slightly tempted to fear,

1114. and God says to us,

  1115. fear not,

  1116. you are mine,

1117. and you do not belong to any other God,

  1118. or force,

  1119. or power,

  1120. or authority,

1121. you are my precious possession,

1122. and if you know you are his,

  1123. then you are safe,

  1124. of course you're weak,

  1125. of course you're frail,

1126. but the Lord says you are mine,

1127. and I've got hold of you,

1128. and I'm never going to lose you,

1129. the fourth and the final reason we can be confident,

1130. is that the Holy Spirit is a deposit,

  1131. it's a deposit,

  1132. the promised Holy Spirit,

  1133. so verse 14,

  1134. who is the guarantee,

  1135. the Holy Spirit,

1136. who is the guarantee of our inheritance,

  1137. until we acquire possession,

1138. to the praise of his glory,

  1139. and last year,

  1140. I bought a car,

1141. with the help of John Silver's car services,

1142. and we went around different,

  1143. kind of random,

  1144. Japanese and American importers,

  1145. looking at cars,

1146. and then we found one that,

1147. John said he thought was good,

1148. and I just agreed and bought it,

  1149. and to buy it,

1150. I had to put down a deposit,

  1151. I can't remember what it was,

  1152. I think it was 20%,

  1153. and so,

1154. I put a deposit on the car,

  1155. at that point,

1156. John stopped sending me adverts,

  1157. on auto trader,

  1158. by WhatsApp,

  1159. incessantly,

  1160. I wasn't searching anymore,

  1161. I wasn't thinking about it anymore,

1162. because I'd paid the deposit,

  1163. and it guarantees it,

1164. and so that when I ring up,

1165. and say is it ready,

1166. they'd say well it's ready for you,

  1167. I wouldn't say well,

1168. actually I've changed my mind,

1169. and they would say well tough,

  1170. you're committed now,

  1171. I'd paid the deposit,

  1172. it belongs to us,

  1173. and one day,

1174. I would complete the deal,

  1175. I can't remember,

1176. was it four weeks later,

1177. I went back with the rest of the cash,

1178. and I completed the deal,

1179. and I took it home,

1180. and so God has put down a deposit,

  1181. look at verse 14,

1182. and I think the footnote helps as well,

  1183. look at the footnote,

1184. if it's I haven't got the same Bible as you,

1185. he is the guarantee of our inheritance,

1186. or he is the down payment,

  1187. he is the deposit,

  1188. guarantee our inheritance,

1189. so I want to say this,

1190. I think one of the big problems,

1191. we worry about whether we are gods or not,

  1192. is because we forget,

1193. that the Holy Spirit is described as a deposit,

  1194. he's a down payment,

  1195. we forget don't we,

  1196. that the down payment,

1197. the deposit is not everything,

1198. so the people in that garage,

1199. when I put down the deposit,

1200. would they look at the deposit,

1201. and say well is this all we're going to get,

1202. after all the work we've done,

1203. shipping this thing in from Japan,

1204. and doing all the work,

1205. is this all we're going to get done,

1206. we worked hard to fix up this car,

1207. and do we just get this,

1208. no because it's the deposit,

  1209. the deposit isn't everything,

1210. but the deposit does guarantee,

1211. that there's more to come,

1212. and sometimes maybe you tonight,

1213. are going through a period in your Christian life,

1214. where you feel it's hard,

  1215. and dry,

  1216. and you feel thin,

  1217. and stretched,

  1218. and you worry,

  1219. I don't feel like I once felt,

1220. and the truth tonight is,

1221. the deposit is not everything,

  1222. there's much much more,

1223. but the deposit is a guarantee,

  1224. everything,

1225. all that is to come,

  1226. he guarantees our inheritance,

  1227. and we have seen,

1228. that God is going to inherit us,

1229. and now Paul is talking about,

1230. what we are going to inherit,

1231. well remember we are in Christ,

1232. he's the son of the father,

1233. we are his brothers and sisters,

  1234. and we will inherit,

1235. all that he will inherit,

  1236. what will he inherit,

1237. do you remember what he'll inherit,

  1238. everything,

  1239. everything,

  1240. everything,

  1241. life with his father,

1242. in a world made new forever,

1243. you see the Christian life,

1244. it's not a kind of fingers crossed,

  1245. we're hoping,

  1246. we'll inherit if we're lucky,

1247. the deposit has been paid,

  1248. and the deposit guarantees,

  1249. our inheritance,

  1250. until the redemption,

1251. of those who are God's possession,

  1252. we are God's possession,

1253. and we belong to him,

1254. and he wants us for himself,

  1255. and there will be,

  1256. a final redemption,

  1257. when he finally comes,

  1258. to set us free,

  1259. and claim us,

  1260. as his own forever,

  1261. my car,

1262. and when I bought it,

  1263. it was actually delayed,

1264. for a couple of weeks,

  1265. so to fix something,

  1266. it was delayed,

1267. for a couple of weeks,

  1268. I don't think,

  1269. that my car,

  1270. was worrying,

  1271. and fretting,

1272. but if I could have,

  1273. I would have reassured,

  1274. my car,

1275. and I would have said,

  1276. you car,

  1277. are ours,
