  1. Let's pray for the Lord's help.

  2. Instead, he finds God's holy law, his joy and great delight.

  3. Amen.

  4. Well, I've chosen just to preach on two of those verses from Proverbs 3.

  5. Let me read those verses again, verses 9 and 10, and then I'll explain why.

  6. It says,

  7. Now, to be honest, a number of quite mundane reasons I wanted to preach on this.

  8. Partly, we're about to start a new series in our youth group this term on money in the book of Proverbs.

  9. So I kind of wanted to refresh my own thinking on it.

  10. Partly, it's much easier for me, with clearly no vested interest, for me to talk about giving to you than it is for others.

  11. Perhaps your elders here are bolder than I would be, but you know what I mean.

  12. But partly, this is just something which I've discovered in the Scriptures, to be a wonderful thing.

  13. To be a surprising testimony to just how generous and gracious God is.

  14. Honour the Lord with your wealth and with the firstfruits of all your produce.

  15. Then your barns will be filled with plenty.

  16. And your vats will be bursting with wine.

  17. A year or so ago, we kept hearing in the news about the cost of living crisis.

  18. I think we hear about that less in the news now, because it's become our new baseline.

  19. That prices are higher.

  20. And petrol costs more.

  21. And food seems to drain the bank account.

  22. Now, if you're a child, you might not realise this, because your parents are the ones, rightly, who worry about it rather than you.

  23. But children, your parents probably have, over the last few years, become armchair economists.

  24. Worrying about money.

  25. Worrying about the shopping.

  26. Checking the smart meter.

  27. I find smart meters a very alarming thing.

  28. You know how it tells you how much you've spent today on energy?

  29. Every time you look at it, you think, oh, can that really be the case?

  30. But the good news from the book of Proverbs, the good news from God's word, is that God's economics are not our economics.

  31. In fact, all economics, if you're studying that perhaps at A-level or something, or if you work in that field,

  32. all economics are wrong if they bracket out God and his providence and his care and his power.

  33. Now, at a time where people are feeling the pinch, we may feel it's a time where we look at the balances and think,

  34. hang on, I need to tone down my giving to the Lord, giving to the church.

  35. But I want to show us from Proverbs chapter 3, this is a time not to stop or reduce giving,

    Proverbs 3 chapter mention

  36. but a time to carry on giving to the Lord.

  37. And here's why.

  38. The book of Proverbs has lots of obvious lessons about money.

  39. So just hear these things and think to yourself, does this sound like an obvious teaching?

  40. Chapter 14, verse 23.

  41. In all toil there is profit, but mere talk tends only to poverty.

  42. I don't think you need to be a Christian to know that that's true.

  43. Chapter 10, verse 4.

  44. A lazy hand causes poverty, but the hand of the diligent makes rich.

  45. Chapter 13, verse 11.

  46. Wealth gained hastily will dwindle, but whoever gathers little by little will increase it.

  47. Even chapter 11, verse 25.

  48. I think this is less obvious to the average person, but it still rings true.

  49. A generous man will prosper.

  50. He who refreshes others will himself be refreshed.

  51. You can see how, you know, if you're supporting somebody when you're doing well,

  52. then you might be the kind of person who others support when you need to be refreshed.

  53. But chapter 3, verse 9 to 10 is not obvious.

  54. It's not intuitive at all.

  55. If you were to say this to one of your neighbours or someone you know from school,

  56. they would say,

  57. that doesn't make sense at all.

  58. Honour the Lord with your wealth and with the firstfruits of all your produce.

  59. Then your barns will be filled with plenty,

  60. and your vats will be bursting with wine.

  61. I think when we think about giving to the poor or to the work of the church,

  62. we tend to be motivated by things like need.

  63. We say, there's a building that needs to be built.

  64. There's an appeal that needs to get that thing up to the very top of the thermometer on it.

  65. Then we can build the building.

  66. Or we need to employ this new post.

  67. Or we've got to pay the bills to keep the lights on.

  68. There's a need.

  69. Or perhaps we feel motivated by guilt.

  70. We think, well, somebody probably ought to do this,

  71. because otherwise the minister's poor children will starve or something like that.

  72. Or, just by bare duty.

  73. We know that God's word says something about giving.

  74. We don't really know why, but we're just going to go along with it anyway.

  75. Proverbs chapter 3 gives us a far more appealing and far more true and far more gracious motivation than that.

    Proverbs 3 chapter mention

  76. Honouring the Lord by giving to him, giving to him, that is giving to his work, brings blessing.

  77. The motivation is, I want to be blessed.

  78. Both materially and spiritually.

  79. Or to put it in the pithiest way, the one who tithes thrives.

  80. Now, perhaps you're hearing that thinking, hang on a second.

  81. Hold your horses.

  82. The rest of the sermon, I'm just going to spend answering the many objections that you're probably already thinking of in your mind.

  83. And I've thought of at least 14.

  84. So, let's see how far we get.

  85. They're quick.

  86. Don't worry.

  87. Here's the first one.

  88. You're just tricking me.

  89. This is just manipulation.

  90. Both the verse itself and this sermon is just somebody self-interestedly saying, give me money.

  91. Now, that is a cynical objection, but it is a real one.

  92. It has to be addressed because it does happen.

  93. One, incidentally, if you're somebody who's here, who's not a Christian, one, I'm glad, delighted that you're here.

  94. And two, I just want to make it really clear that you should not be giving to the church to the work of Jesus Christ,

  95. unless you consider that Jesus is your Lord and your great high priest.

  96. Because I think that's what giving to the Lord is.

  97. It's testifying, not with our lips, but with our bank statement, that Jesus is my Lord.

  98. Proverbs is a book that's written by King Solomon.

  99. In other words, it's not written by the people who benefit from the first fruits and the tithes.

  100. Chapter 31 of 2 Chronicles, it's one of the kings, another king like King Solomon, King Hezekiah,

  101. who leads the people in doing just this, in bringing in the full tithe and first fruits into the priests and the Levites.

  102. Now, King Hezekiah, presumably, was the richest man in the entire country.

  103. He didn't stand to benefit at all from giving money to the priests and Levites.

  104. And yet he led the people in doing it.

  105. Proverbs is not, these words are not the words of somebody self-interested.

  106. Solomon himself stood to gain nothing by giving the first fruits of all his many lands and wealth.

  107. Except that he did.

  108. Because we all have a vested interest in these verses, if they're true.

  109. All of us.

  110. If it is true that the Lord fills the barns of those who honour the Lord with their wealth,

  111. then we have a vested interest in this.

  112. Second objection.

  113. This is clearly not always true.

  114. Now, Proverbs recognises this.

  115. In fact, the very nature of a proverb is it's saying something general,

  116. rather than something kind of ironclad, universal law.

  117. Proverbs recognises it in places like chapter 28, verse 6,

  118. where it says,

  119. Better is a poor man who walks in his integrity,

  120. than a rich man who is crooked in his ways.

  121. Throughout the whole book of Proverbs,

  122. it's plain that it's possible to be rich and wicked.

  123. But it's possible, perhaps even common, to be poor and righteous.

  124. So it's clearly not always true, yes.

  125. And Proverbs recognises that.

  126. Even in this very reading that we heard,

  127. chapter 3, verse 11 and 12,

  128. My son, do not despise the Lord's discipline,

  129. or be weary of his reproof.

  130. For the Lord reproves him whom he loves,

  131. as a father the son in whom he delights.

  132. Even in those verses, we see that God brings hardship,

  133. as discipline,

  134. on the children whom he loves.

  135. Now, that hardship must include,

  136. or at least possibly include,

  137. some financial hardship and difficulty.

  138. God brings those things,

  139. as he brings all trials on us,

  140. as an opportunity to learn to trust him,

  141. to learn to rely on him,

  142. and to walk in his ways.

  143. So yes, this is clearly not always true.

  144. It generally is true, though.

  145. We tend to read Proverbs and say,

  146. yeah, I recognise there are some exceptions to this,

  147. and move to,

  148. well, it's just all random.

  149. Whether people end up happy or sad,

  150. rich or poor,

  151. righteous or foolish,

  152. that's just random.

  153. It's up to you.

  154. You have to pull yourself up

  155. by your bootstraps.

  156. You have to be the one who gets lucky.

  157. But those things deny

  158. the lordship of Jesus Christ.

  159. Jesus Christ,

  160. who sits enthroned,

  161. ruling over everything,

  162. all of the powerful angels and authorities,

  163. all of the powerful governments

  164. and financial institutions,

  165. and all of us,

  166. he has not stepped back

  167. from our individual financial affairs.

  168. He knows what's going on

  169. in your work

  170. and in your bank account.

  171. He not only knows,

  172. but he cares.

  173. He not only cares,

  174. but to some significant

  175. and important degree,

  176. he controls it.

  177. Third objection.

  178. Isn't this just in the Old Testament?

  179. Well, yes, Proverbs is in the Old Testament,

  180. so on one sense,

  181. yes, that's true.

  182. And not just in that sense.

  183. Not just that it's in this book

  184. rather than in the book of Matthew

  185. or in James.

  186. Because in verse 9,

  187. it refers specifically

  188. to the first fruits

  189. of all your produce.

  190. Now, the law of Israel

  191. stated that

  192. before the people could eat

  193. a single thing

  194. from the lands

  195. and fields that they had,

  196. they first had to bring

  197. the first and the best produce

  198. from their lands

  199. to God.

  200. They brought not only

  201. the first fruits,

  202. but a tithe,

  203. that is a tenth,

  204. of all that their land produced

  205. and brought it to the Levites

  206. and the priests.

  207. Now, at least to some extent,

  208. that's therefore connected

  209. with the promise of the land, right?

  210. The reason they had those fields

  211. in the first place

  212. was because God had given them,

  213. their specific tribe,

  214. their specific family,

  215. this specific field.

  216. And yet,

  217. this idea that there is

  218. a cycle of blessing

  219. is not one that's limited

  220. to the Old Testament.

  221. Proverbs, I think,

  222. if you think about the whole book,

  223. it's an instruction

  224. from a father

  225. to his son.

  226. And in a way,

  227. it's an expansion

  228. of the fifth

  229. of the Ten Commandments.

  230. Honor your father and mother,

  231. this is the first commandment

  232. with a promise,

  233. that it may go well with you

  234. and that you may live long

  235. in the land.

  236. Proverbs is about that.

  237. It's a father saying,

  238. if you heed my instructions,

  239. you will be wise

  240. and you will be blessed.

  241. You will have long life.

  242. Length of days,

  243. verse 2.

  244. You will have blessings.

  245. Honor the Lord

  246. with your wealth.

  247. But that quotation

  248. of the fifth commandment

  249. I just gave you

  250. is not from the Old Testament.

  251. I've quoted it

  252. from Ephesians chapter 6,

    Ephesians 6:2

  253. verse 2 and 3.

  254. Honor your father

  255. and your mother.

  256. This is the first commandment

  257. with a promise,

  258. that it may go well with you

  259. and that you may live long

  260. in the land.

  261. The instructions of Proverbs

  262. are not just for them,

  263. they're for us.

  264. They're for Christians

  265. living in the New Testament too.

  266. Besides that,

  267. there's a clear parallel

  268. given in 1 Corinthians 9

  269. between giving to support

  270. the Levites and the temple

  271. and giving to support

  272. the church

  273. and its ministers.

  274. You can see that

  275. in 1 Corinthians 9, 13 and 14

  276. where it says,

  277. do you not know

  278. that those who are employed

  279. in the temple service

  280. get their food

  281. from the temple

  282. and those who serve

  283. at the altar

  284. share in the sacrificial offerings.

  285. In the same way,

  286. the Lord commanded

  287. that those who proclaim

  288. the gospel

  289. should get their living

  290. by the gospel.

  291. More than that,

  292. there's clearly

  293. some obligation

  294. to continue to give

  295. according to our means.

  296. That's what 2 Corinthians 8 says.

  297. Now here's the thing,

  298. wouldn't it be strange,

  299. wouldn't it be just unlike

  300. the God that we know

  301. if he'd left us

  302. with the obligation

  303. to give according

  304. in proportion to your means

  305. but taken away

  306. the blessing?

  307. The New Covenant

  308. is not a downgrade

  309. from the old.

  310. It's an upgrade

  311. in every way.

  312. And that includes

  313. in this way.

  314. Objection number 4.

  315. Doesn't Jesus warn

  316. against riches?

  317. Yes, he does.

  318. In fact, Jesus has more

  319. to say about riches

  320. and the danger of riches

  321. than almost anything else.

  322. He speaks a great deal

  323. as well about self-righteousness

  324. but it seems that for Jesus

  325. in his great wisdom

  326. riches and self-righteousness

  327. come hand in hand.

  328. So yes, Jesus warns

  329. against riches

  330. but so does the book

  331. of Proverbs.

    Proverbs 30 chapter mention

  332. Chapter 30 says,

  333. Give me neither poverty

  334. nor riches

  335. but give me only

  336. my daily bread.

  337. Otherwise,

  338. I may have too much

  339. and disown you

  340. and say,

  341. Who is the Lord?

  342. Or I may become poor

  343. and steal

  344. and so dishonour

  345. the name of my God.

  346. So great

  347. is God's blessing

  348. both in the Old Covenant

  349. and the New.

  350. So great is his blessing

  351. that the chiefest temptation

  352. for us

  353. is that we turn around

  354. having received the things

  355. he's given us

  356. and say,

  357. I did this by my own hand.

  358. I did this.

  359. I worked hard.

  360. I pulled myself up.

  361. And the Lord says,

  362. No,

  363. I gave you everything.

  364. I gave you the bootstraps

  365. and the hands

  366. to pull them up

  367. and I gave you much more

  368. besides.

  369. So yes,

  370. it is a great danger

  371. and I don't want to

  372. underplay that danger.

  373. If you heard that verse,

  374. Then your barns

  375. will be filled with plenty

  376. and your vats

  377. will be bursting with wine.

  378. Does that remind you

  379. of any stories

  380. that Jesus told?

  381. For the children,

  382. we have a book

  383. of the man

  384. who built the barns

  385. and they got bigger

  386. and bigger.

  387. But in the end,

  388. the man died

  389. after he built

  390. the biggest barn of all,

  391. Luke chapter 12.

    Luke 12 chapter mention

  392. And what did God say

  393. to him?

  394. You fool.

  395. You fool.

  396. You,

  397. the opposite of Proverbs.

  398. Not the wise man,

  399. but the fool

  400. building your barns

  401. bigger and bigger.

  402. That's why it says

  403. in verse 9,

  404. honour the Lord

  405. with your wealth.

  406. The man in the parable

  407. honoured his wealth

  408. with his wealth.

  409. He wanted his wealth

  410. to grow yet more and more.

  411. He honoured his pleasure

  412. with his wealth.

  413. He wanted to eat

  414. and drink

  415. and be merry.

  416. It's honour the Lord,

  417. not honour yourself,

  418. not honour your wealth,

  419. not honour mammon,

  420. but honour the Lord

  421. with your wealth.

  422. We are to seek wisdom first.

  423. We are to seek understanding

  424. for,

  425. chapter 3, verse 14,

  426. the gain from wisdom

  427. is better than gain from silver

  428. and her profit

  429. is better than gold.

  430. Get wisdom.

  431. Seek wisdom.

  432. Which is, of course,

  433. the same thing as to say,

  434. get Christ.

  435. Christ.

  436. Seek Christ.

  437. Now again,

  438. who else says that?

  439. Seek something first.

  440. Jesus himself,

  441. in Matthew 6,

  442. says,

  443. seek first

  444. the kingdom

  445. and righteousness.

  446. But that's not where

  447. that verse finishes,

  448. is it?

  449. Jesus goes on,

  450. seek first the kingdom

  451. and righteousness

  452. and all these

  453. material things

  454. will be added

  455. to you.

  456. So yes,

  457. Jesus warns against riches,

  458. just like Proverbs.

  459. Number five.

  460. We will get quicker,

  461. don't worry.

  462. Number five.

  463. Isn't this the prosperity gospel?

  464. Perhaps one night

  465. you've been flicking

  466. through the channels

  467. and you get to

  468. some late night

  469. allegedly Christian channel

  470. and you see somebody

  471. saying,

  472. donate to me,

  473. donate now,

  474. send in via this text message

  475. and I will buy

  476. a private jet

  477. which will help me

  478. to spread the gospel

  479. and God will also

  480. double your money

  481. and you'll see that

  482. I pledge to you.

  483. That's what the prosperity gospel is.

  484. People openly appealing

  485. to greed

  486. and desperation

  487. saying that the gospel

  488. is a means

  489. to wealth.

  490. But Proverbs 3

  491. isn't the prosperity gospel

  492. like that.

  493. I hope that what I'm saying today

  494. is not capable

  495. of being heard

  496. like that.

  497. Proverbs 3 is true

  498. so long as we don't make

  499. God's generosity

  500. a license

  501. for loving money.

  502. So long as we don't

  503. neuter Jesus' teaching

  504. that the good life,

  505. the wise life,

  506. the happy life

  507. is

  508. denying yourself,

  509. taking up your cross

  510. and following me.

  511. That the good life

  512. means losing your life.

  513. That the good life

  514. means

  515. leaving behind

  516. houses

  517. and fields

  518. and family.

  519. So long as those things

  520. are not neutered.

  521. This is not the prosperity gospel.

  522. It's just the way

  523. that our generous God

  524. has set up

  525. his gracious,

  526. grace-filled

  527. world.

  528. A sixth objection.

  529. Isn't this just

  530. works righteousness?

  531. It sounds like you're saying

  532. you've got to do

  533. these good things,

  534. give some money,

  535. do some religious stuff

  536. and then God will bless you.

  537. Absolutely not.

  538. Or at least

  539. if you read it wrong

  540. and misinterpret it,

  541. it is.

  542. But that's not how God

  543. has ever operated.

  544. Everything we have,

  545. every breath,

  546. is by God's grace

  547. only.

  548. The fact that we

  549. profess Jesus Christ

  550. and follow him

  551. if you do,

  552. the fact that we do that

  553. is by God's grace only.

  554. We've received his

  555. gift of righteousness

  556. by faith

  557. only.

  558. And yet that faith

  559. which he's given to us

  560. is not all

  561. that he's given to us.

  562. He's given us

  563. his Holy Spirit

  564. precisely so that we can

  565. walk in his commands.

  566. Precisely so that we can

  567. live the happiest,

  568. wisest way

  569. which is

  570. to walk in his commands.

  571. the wisdom

  572. which comes from the fear

  573. of the Lord,

  574. the good works

  575. which come from faith

  576. are done

  577. by God's grace.

  578. It's God's grace

  579. which produces

  580. in us

  581. good works.

  582. It's God's work

  583. in your heart

  584. which produces wisdom

  585. and a wisdom

  586. which is not just

  587. in the head

  588. but which works out

  589. in every area

  590. of your life.

  591. Now again,

  592. just step back from that.

  593. That's how generous

  594. God is.

  595. He gives you the grace.

  596. You receive

  597. his gift of extraordinary

  598. and perfect righteousness

  599. by faith.

  600. He gives you

  601. his Holy Spirit

  602. so that you can walk

  603. in his commandments

  604. and then he rewards you

  605. for walking in his commandments.

  606. Not just in this life

  607. but in the life to come.

  608. Let's not sell short

  609. the generosity of God.

  610. God is full of grace

  611. at every step

  612. in the chain

  613. along that.

  614. And the grace

  615. which will

  616. bear fruit

  617. in eternity

  618. is a grace

  619. which we can

  620. as yet

  621. barely imagine.

  622. So those are kind of

  623. I suppose

  624. theological objections.

  625. The next few

  626. are quicker

  627. and they're more

  628. practical objections.

  629. So the seventh objection.

  630. I'm worried

  631. that if I do this

  632. I'm just doing it

  633. to get rich.

  634. I'm worried about

  635. my motivations.

  636. Well I want to say

  637. to that

  638. that God has actually

  639. set up this

  640. precisely to prevent

  641. that.

  642. In other words

  643. if you do

  644. have a tendency

  645. to love money

  646. you don't have to be rich

  647. to love money.

  648. You can be

  649. desperately poor

  650. and still love money.

  651. If you do

  652. have a tendency

  653. and a temptation

  654. to love money

  655. and you give

  656. to the Lord

  657. first

  658. I don't think

  659. you can do both

  660. of those things

  661. for long.

  662. God has set up

  663. honouring the Lord

  664. with your wealth

  665. precisely

  666. to put to death

  667. the sin

  668. of covetousness.

  669. It's designed

  670. to purify

  671. our motivations

  672. because we have

  673. to say

  674. I love you

  675. first.

  676. I honour you

  677. more than anything.

  678. I need you

  679. Lord

  680. more than I need

  681. anything.

  682. It's anything.

  683. Not even money

  684. not even bread

  685. not even my livelihood.

  686. An eighth objection.

  687. If I did this

  688. I wouldn't have

  689. enough to live on.

  690. Now I want to be

  691. really sensitive to this

  692. because I do think

  693. there are real

  694. circumstances

  695. where people might say

  696. I wish I could honour

  697. the Lord with my wealth

  698. but I truly don't

  699. have any wealth.

  700. All my wealth

  701. is someone else's wealth.

  702. I don't have

  703. a penny to live on.

  704. Think of those

  705. many slaves

  706. in the New Testament

  707. who were converted

  708. to follow Jesus Christ.

  709. But they didn't really

  710. have any possessions.

  711. They were slaves.

  712. They didn't earn

  713. any money

  714. week to week

  715. for the most part.

  716. But

  717. remember Jesus'

  718. story

  719. in Luke 21

  720. well not a story

  721. but something he saw

  722. and pointed out

  723. to his disciples

  724. he saw a widow

  725. going to the

  726. temple treasury

  727. and putting in

  728. just two

  729. small copper coins

  730. and said

  731. and these words

  732. ought to echo

  733. in our hearts

  734. he said

  735. having seen

  736. people pouring in

  737. their gold coins

  738. he said

  739. I tell you

  740. she has put

  741. in more

  742. than all these.

  743. God's economics

  744. are not

  745. our economics.

  746. and he says

  747. honour the Lord

  748. with your wealth

  749. and first

  750. put that first.

  751. My mum is involved

  752. with Christians

  753. against poverty

  754. she helps out

  755. with that a little bit

  756. and she says

  757. I was talking to her

  758. about this a few months ago

  759. she was surprised

  760. that one of the first things

  761. when they're trying

  762. to get somebody out

  763. of a horrendous

  764. situation with debt

  765. one of the first things

  766. they do

  767. to put into their budget

  768. is giving.

  769. It's a recognition

  770. a pretty bold recognition

  771. on the part

  772. of an organisation

  773. that's trying

  774. to fight poverty

  775. that God's economics

  776. are not our economics

  777. that God owns

  778. the cattle

  779. on a thousand hills

  780. that God has

  781. an infinite supply

  782. of life

  783. and money

  784. he has enough

  785. he has enough

  786. for himself

  787. he has enough

  788. to overflow

  789. to every creature

  790. in the world

  791. he has enough

  792. for you.

  793. A ninth objection

  794. I will do this

  795. but I need to

  796. pay off my debt

  797. I need to pay off

  798. my project first

  799. again

  800. I want to be sensitive

  801. to that

  802. that might be

  803. the right thing

  804. to do

  805. and in some ways

  806. Christians against poverty

  807. is trying to sort

  808. out people

  809. in that situation

  810. but notice what it says

  811. in verse 9

  812. honour the Lord

  813. with your wealth

  814. and with the first fruits

  815. of all your produce

  816. however we work out

  817. our giving in practice

  818. we ought to be trying

  819. to say

  820. in some way with it

  821. Lord you're the first person

  822. before I put a morsel

  823. in my mouth

  824. I'm honouring you with it

  825. I'm testifying

  826. that you gave it

  827. I'm professing

  828. that you

  829. have provided for me

  830. a great high priest Jesus

  831. and I belong to him

  832. that's the first thing

  833. we do with our money

  834. so I want to

  835. if that's the case

  836. of saying

  837. I can't give now

  838. because I'm still

  839. paying off my student debt

  840. or I need to pay

  841. for this conservatory

  842. or something

  843. I want to gently ask

  844. how or who

  845. or what

  846. is your highest

  847. and first priority

  848. in life

  849. tenth objection

  850. somebody who says

  851. look I'm doing this

  852. I am giving

  853. but I'm just getting poorer

  854. now

  855. this may happen

  856. over the long term

  857. because the Lord

  858. in his sovereign power

  859. disciplines people

  860. just how he wants to

  861. but I want to say

  862. that if Proverbs

  863. is true

  864. generally true

  865. then it probably won't

  866. that somebody who gives

  867. generously to the Lord

  868. who honours the Lord

  869. with their wealth

  870. probably won't

  871. be getting poorer

  872. and poorer

  873. over the long term

  874. because God's economics

  875. are not our economics

  876. perhaps you're someone

  877. like me

  878. who looks at graphs

  879. and reads things

  880. in the paper

  881. and thinks

  882. the economy is going

  883. down the pan

  884. and it seemingly

  885. has no bottom

  886. do you think

  887. that that can outrun God

  888. I don't

  889. there are a lot of things

  890. though

  891. that are better

  892. than wealth

  893. in Proverbs

  894. if you say

  895. I'm giving

  896. and I'm getting poorer

  897. look at all the other

  898. blessings God

  899. may have poured

  900. on you

  901. Proverbs says

  902. that peace

  903. a peaceable house

  904. a good wife

  905. that wisdom itself

  906. are better than wealth

  907. if you're giving

  908. and gaining those things

  909. you are giving

  910. and gaining

  911. in blessing

  912. an eleventh objection

  913. sorry

  914. we're getting through them

  915. an eleventh objection

  916. how do I actually

  917. calculate this

  918. and I don't think

  919. this is a

  920. just a theoretical objection

  921. because I

  922. from my own

  923. personal experience

  924. there is an extraordinary

  925. barrier

  926. from hearing something

  927. about what God

  928. says about giving

  929. to going home

  930. and having a conversation

  931. about it

  932. to actually firing up

  933. the old bank app

  934. and then you realise

  935. you've lost that little

  936. calculator thing you need

  937. and then you forget

  938. about it because of the children

  939. and then six months later

  940. you haven't actually done it

  941. and then you think

  942. well

  943. I don't even know

  944. how to calculate

  945. what I should give

  946. to the Lord

  947. what does in proportion

  948. to my wealth

  949. actually mean

  950. now our verses

  951. don't address this directly

  952. although

  953. when they brought

  954. the first fruits

  955. in ancient Israel

  956. they also brought

  957. a tenth

  958. of the year's

  959. profit or increase

  960. now again

  961. they must have

  962. some years

  963. not been able

  964. to bring very much

  965. because the plague

  966. of locusts

  967. had eaten their

  968. crops

  969. or an extremely

  970. strong

  971. and heavy tax burden

  972. had cut down

  973. what that meant

  974. but whatever else

  975. first fruits

  976. implies

  977. it certainly implies

  978. that we

  979. review these things

  980. regularly

  981. that we honour

  982. the Lord

  983. with our wealth

  984. by checking

  985. our wealth

  986. by checking

  987. our giving

  988. and saying

  989. yep

  990. I'm reviewing

  991. this

  992. to honour

  993. the Lord

  994. I'm reviewing

  995. this

  996. in gratitude

  997. to him

  998. I think

  999. I'm increasingly

  1000. convinced

  1001. that the

  1002. tenth principle

  1003. the tenth

  1004. of all your

  1005. increase

  1006. applies

  1007. and is a

  1008. gracious

  1009. and freeing

  1010. thing for

  1011. Christians

  1012. as well

  1013. I'll happily

  1014. talk to anyone

  1015. about that

  1016. afterwards

  1017. but I think

  1018. here's the

  1019. real bottom

  1020. line

  1021. something that

  1022. Jesus said

  1023. with the

  1024. measure you

  1025. use

  1026. it will be

  1027. measured

  1028. to you

  1029. that you

  1030. reap

  1031. what you

  1032. sow

  1033. again

  1034. people do

  1035. not believe

  1036. these things

  1037. because they're

  1038. a deep

  1039. principle

  1040. hidden in

  1041. the world

  1042. which Jesus

  1043. has revealed

  1044. to us

  1045. Jesus himself

  1046. who gave

  1047. up everything

  1048. and then

  1049. received

  1050. eternal life

  1051. with the

  1052. measure you

  1053. use

  1054. it will be

  1055. measured

  1056. to you

  1057. so yes

  1058. you do

  1059. have to

  1060. calculate

  1061. and you

  1062. do have

  1063. to do

  1064. something

  1065. about it

  1066. and you

  1067. do have

  1068. to find

  1069. that little

  1070. calculator

  1071. don't sweat

  1072. it too

  1073. much

  1074. but yes

  1075. you should

  1076. I'm happy

  1077. to speak

  1078. about that

  1079. more

  1080. a twelfth

  1081. objection

  1082. some people

  1083. would say

  1084. look I'd

  1085. like to do

  1086. this but my

  1087. wife or my

  1088. husband or my

  1089. parents they

  1090. won't stand

  1091. for it

  1092. they just

  1093. don't think

  1094. we should be

  1095. doing this

  1096. perhaps you're

  1097. married to

  1098. someone who's

  1099. not a

  1100. Christian

  1101. perhaps your

  1102. parents have

  1103. different views

  1104. on this

  1105. to you

  1106. now again

  1107. I've got a

  1108. great deal of

  1109. sympathy for

  1110. that

  1111. not for

  1112. personal reasons

  1113. I should say

  1114. but I do

  1115. understand that

  1116. that's a

  1117. real burden

  1118. to bear

  1119. I would suggest

  1120. that if you're

  1121. in that situation

  1122. that would be a

  1123. great thing to

  1124. raise with one

  1125. of the elders

  1126. of this church

  1127. and to talk to

  1128. them about it

  1129. but here's what

  1130. I will say

  1131. about it

  1132. you may have

  1133. to go to

  1134. your husband

  1135. or wife

  1136. or parents

  1137. and apologise

  1138. I personally

  1139. would have to

  1140. apologise to

  1141. as Jenny and I

  1142. have spoken about

  1143. this in the past

  1144. to say look

  1145. I've been stingy

  1146. in the past

  1147. towards the Lord

  1148. because I've been

  1149. scared

  1150. and I thought

  1151. well I've got to

  1152. keep the money

  1153. back for myself

  1154. because I

  1155. dare not give it

  1156. away

  1157. we don't have

  1158. enough

  1159. I'm sorry

  1160. because I've

  1161. dishonoured the

  1162. Lord in doing

  1163. that

  1164. and here's what

  1165. I want to do

  1166. differently

  1167. 13th

  1168. I'm not sure

  1169. who I should

  1170. give to

  1171. well Galatians

    Galatians 6:6

  1172. chapter 6

  1173. verse 6

  1174. says

  1175. let the one

  1176. who has taught

  1177. the word

  1178. share all good

  1179. things with the

  1180. one who teaches

  1181. I think if you

  1182. don't consider

  1183. your own church's

  1184. ministry

  1185. the kind of

  1186. obvious port of

  1187. call for giving

  1188. then that's

  1189. probably a bit

  1190. of a red flag

  1191. about something

  1192. but you are

  1193. genuinely free

  1194. to give

  1195. you're free

  1196. to give

  1197. not under

  1198. compulsion

  1199. God loves

  1200. a cheerful

  1201. giver

  1202. 14th

  1203. do you know

  1204. this isn't

  1205. actually really

  1206. an objection

  1207. perhaps you're

  1208. somebody who

  1209. hears these

  1210. things

  1211. from Proverbs

    Proverbs 3 chapter mention

  1212. chapter 3

  1213. and says

  1214. do you know

  1215. I've been doing

  1216. this for the

  1217. last 50 years

  1218. or 70 years

  1219. or 15 years

  1220. and now I

  1221. think about

  1222. my life

  1223. and realise

  1224. that I've

  1225. prospered

  1226. far more

  1227. than I can

  1228. really explain

  1229. that God

  1230. has given me

  1231. more than I

  1232. really deserved

  1233. I was never

  1234. that good at

  1235. my job

  1236. I never

  1237. really made

  1238. much progress

  1239. I didn't

  1240. really check

  1241. my pensions

  1242. and my savings

  1243. that carefully

  1244. and I never

  1245. realised there

  1246. was a

  1247. connection

  1248. if that is

  1249. you

  1250. can I

  1251. encourage you

  1252. to do

  1253. two things

  1254. first

  1255. give thanks

  1256. to the

  1257. Lord

  1258. praise him

  1259. recognise

  1260. that his

  1261. grace

  1262. is from

  1263. grace

  1264. to grace

  1265. that it's

  1266. overflowing

  1267. and abounding

  1268. but secondly

  1269. share your

  1270. story of

  1271. God's

  1272. kindness

  1273. with others

  1274. to encourage

  1275. them in the

  1276. walk

  1277. there will be

  1278. young people

  1279. here

  1280. young being a

  1281. kind of relative

  1282. term

  1283. who just

  1284. can't believe

  1285. this

  1286. they look at

  1287. the economy

  1288. they grumble

  1289. about boomers

  1290. they think I'm

  1291. never going to

  1292. own a house

  1293. because of

  1294. something to do

  1295. with fiat

  1296. currency or

  1297. something

  1298. encourage those

  1299. people and say

  1300. look God's

  1301. economics are

  1302. not our

  1303. economics

  1304. hear my

  1305. story

  1306. I was talking

  1307. to a guy

  1308. back in our

  1309. church about

  1310. this

  1311. who'd worked

  1312. in a low

  1313. level job in

  1314. the charitable

  1315. sector for all

  1316. of his life

  1317. was talking about

  1318. these verses

  1319. and said

  1320. do you know

  1321. I think that's

  1322. what God has

  1323. done to me

  1324. and now I

  1325. realise how

  1326. generous and

  1327. gracious God

  1328. has been to

  1329. me

  1330. and I said

  1331. to him

  1332. well look

  1333. tell other

  1334. people who

  1335. are here

  1336. too

  1337. that God

  1338. really

  1339. is

  1340. gracious

  1341. and kind

  1342. I read an

  1343. amazing stat

  1344. it's from

  1345. 2012 but I

  1346. assume it's

  1347. even more

  1348. true now

  1349. that the

  1350. over 60s

  1351. are more

  1352. than six

  1353. times more

  1354. generous to

  1355. charity including

  1356. to churches

  1357. than the

  1358. under 30s

  1359. and ten years

  1360. prior to that

  1361. it was just

  1362. three times

  1363. more

  1364. six times

  1365. more the

  1366. over 60s

  1367. their proportional

  1368. generosity to

  1369. the young

  1370. young people

  1371. need to hear

  1372. your encouragement

  1373. in this

  1374. they need to

  1375. hear God's

  1376. encouragement

  1377. from chapter

  1378. 3 verse 9

  1379. that to some

  1380. meaningful extent

  1381. giving to the

  1382. Lord

  1383. honouring him

  1384. with our

  1385. wealth

  1386. is a

  1387. no brainer

  1388. on every

  1389. level

  1390. promised not

  1391. just for this

  1392. life

  1393. but for the

  1394. life to

  1395. come

  1396. and more

  1397. fundamentally

  1398. they need

  1399. to hear

  1400. we need

  1401. to hear

  1402. every one

  1403. of us

  1404. needs to

  1405. hear

  1406. that God's

  1407. economics

  1408. are not

  1409. our

  1410. economics

  1411. God is

  1412. not stingy

  1413. if you're a

  1414. Christian

  1415. just shake

  1416. your head

  1417. and think

  1418. is God

  1419. stingy

  1420. he who

  1421. did not

  1422. spare up

  1423. his own

  1424. son but

  1425. gave him

  1426. for us

  1427. all

  1428. is he

  1429. stingy

  1430. God who

  1431. created

  1432. every single

  1433. atom in

  1434. the universe

  1435. is he

  1436. underfunded

  1437. is he

  1438. wanting

  1439. or lacking

  1440. for anything

  1441. it's

  1442. Satan

  1443. who wants

  1444. us

  1445. not to be

  1446. blessed

  1447. either spiritually

  1448. or materially

  1449. God

  1450. is infinitely

  1451. rich

  1452. and prodigally

  1453. generous

  1454. he did

  1455. not

  1456. spare

  1457. his

  1458. own

  1459. son

  1460. but

  1461. gave him

  1462. up

  1463. for us

  1464. all

  1465. now God

  1466. just wants

  1467. us to

  1468. prove that

  1469. we know

  1470. that

  1471. and he

  1472. wants the

  1473. proof

  1474. to be in

  1475. our bank

  1476. statement

  1477. and here's

  1478. the crazy

  1479. thing

  1480. sooner or

  1481. later it'll

  1482. be in your

  1483. bank statement

  1484. in both

  1485. columns

  1486. in and

  1487. out

  1488. now just

  1489. imagine that

  1490. multiplied

  1491. and compounded

  1492. across hundreds

  1493. of people

  1494. and across

  1495. the generations

  1496. I always think

  1497. there's a kind

  1498. of chicken and

  1499. egg thing

  1500. when we talk

  1501. about and pray

  1502. for revival

  1503. on the one

  1504. hand when

  1505. revival comes

  1506. people consecrate

  1507. themselves to

  1508. God and that

  1509. notably includes

  1510. their wallets

  1511. on the other

  1512. hand revival

  1513. comes when

  1514. people humble

  1515. themselves and

  1516. consecrate

  1517. themselves to

  1518. God including

  1519. their wallets

  1520. imagine that

  1521. is that not

  1522. what we long

  1523. for in this

  1524. area of

  1525. London across

  1526. our whole

  1527. land and

  1528. across the

  1529. whole world

  1530. well it

  1531. begins with

  1532. people among

  1533. other things

  1534. who honour

  1535. the Lord with

  1536. their wealth

  1537. and with the

  1538. first fruits of

  1539. all their

  1540. produce and

  1541. their barns are

  1542. filled with

  1543. plenty and

  1544. their vats

  1545. will be bursting

  1546. with wine

  1547. imagine that

  1548. well let's pray

  1549. that we won't

  1550. have to just

  1551. imagine it

  1552. let's pray

  1553. a
