  1. Would you listen if I told you the secret to a life of joy?

  2. It's actually an open secret, but I can take you to a man who has done extensive research

  3. ! That has been widely reviewed and weighed.

  4. It's been around for a long time. In fact, the study has been about for quite a long time. It's been published. It's been republished.

  5. And you can actually get it for free on the internet. So it is very much an open secret.

  6. But this man has an answer to the question of where we can find joy.

  7. It seems so that people aren't listening. When we look around, do you think, looking inside at your own heart,

  8. that there's really enough joy in there? When you look around, people you work with,

  9. people you brush up against each day, do you think, do you know, we are absolutely swimming in joy?

  10. People aren't listening. Let me take you to that man. Turn to page 553.

  11. The man is called Solomon. And we saw last week, chapter 1, that part of his research was into an earlier study of generations and the natural world around him.

  12. Our world. And our researcher concluded that it was all vanity.

  13. It was vanity of vanities. Chapter 1, verse 2.

  14. All is vanity.

  15. We said that word is vapor.

  16. Foggy vapor.

  17. Mist.

  18. And his research last time showed us that generations, they come and they go,

  19. and the world keeps turning as it always had,

  20. and yet all he sees is vapor.

  21. But he wasn't content to stop his research at that point.

  22. He has seen, yes, that we can't control the world around us,

  23. but really, is there no gain?

  24. Is there no profit in the world in learning,

  25. or building wealth,

  26. or creating jobs,

  27. or enjoying laughter and culture and things like that?

  28. Is there no profit or joy in these things?

  29. Because these are the things that we're told will actually give us the good life.

  30. These are the things that our culture tells us that if we can get a grip on them,

  31. if we can get enough of them into our lives,

  32. then that's where joy is.

  33. And yet our experience tells us something else.

  34. So Solomon, verse 13 of chapter 1, if you can look down,

  35. applied his heart to seek and to search out by wisdom all that is done under heaven.

  36. He wants to be sure that his initial conclusion,

  37. that as the world keeps turning,

  38. as generations come and go,

  39. we have no control over them,

  40. as we grasp after gain there,

  41. his conclusion that that is all vapor,

  42. he wants to be sure.

  43. So he checks out all that is done under heaven.

  44. Is there no gain to be had?

  45. And we see as well that this is an arm's length project.

  46. He went all in, chapter 1, verse 16.

  47. He said in his heart, chapter 2, verse 1,

  48. he said in his heart, chapter 2, verse 20,

  49. he gave up his heart.

  50. If there was gain to be had in these things,

  51. he was going to find them.

  52. He went all in.

  53. If these things could deliver the joy that he's looking for,

  54. he would find out.

  55. And this evening, I want to take us through his research,

  56. and I want to highlight what it revealed.

  57. So that's our first point, his research.

  58. Let's look at that.

  59. Solomon's research.

  60. He starts with the pursuit of wisdom.

  61. Chapter 1, 16 and 17,

  62. I said in my heart,

  63. I have acquired great wisdom,

  64. surpassing all who were over Jerusalem before me,

  65. and my heart has had great experience of wisdom and knowledge,

  66. and I applied my heart to know wisdom

  67. and to know madness and folly.

  68. I'm going to acknowledge that I'm already wise,

  69. but I need to give myself further to wisdom and to knowledge.

  70. So Solomon gives himself to great works of literature and science.

  71. He scars the corridors of learning for answers.

  72. He wrestles with the great ideas of philosophy,

  73. and he studies the opposite of sanity and wisdom.

  74. There they are, madness and folly.

  75. We need to understand sanity and wisdom.

  76. If we're going to do that, well, we need to understand the opposite,

  77. madness and folly,

  78. in order to understand the human psyche,

  79. the whole human being more deeply.

  80. He is a forerunner of 90s new labor,

  81. education, education, education.

  82. He thinks,

  83. if I can get more wisdom, more knowledge,

  84. let's see what's there.

  85. But look at 1 verse 18,

  86. the more he learned,

  87. the less he knew.

  88. He says it was a striving after the wind.

  89. It was like trying to go and direct the wind

  90. in a particular course or direction.

  91. It was like grasping handfuls of fresh air.

  92. There was nothing there.

  93. And he says it's not simply vexing.

  94. It's not simply frustrating.

  95. It actually made him sad.

  96. Do you see?

  97. In much wisdom is much vexation,

  98. and he who increases knowledge increases sorrow.

  99. All of this wisdom actually has just made me sad.

  100. All the effort,

  101. it has felt like a complete waste of time

  102. because I'm no further on.

  103. And that's true, isn't it?

  104. Learning, like everything else,

  105. if it is motivated by a desire for you to be clever,

  106. if it is motivated by a desire for you to be wise

  107. for your sake,

  108. so you can demonstrate to other people

  109. how smart you are,

  110. well, it's like this.

  111. You find the more you know,

  112. the more you know how little you actually know.

  113. The search for wisdom is like vapor.

  114. It eludes your grasp.

  115. Solomon then changes tack.

  116. Do you see?

  117. He leaves the library and heads into town.

  118. Chapter 2, verse 1.

  119. I said in my heart,

  120. Come now, I will test you with pleasure.

  121. Enjoy yourself.

  122. The word for pleasure here is joy or happiness,

  123. so we're really getting to the heart of things now.

  124. We're getting to the heart of this research project.

  125. I'm going to go in pursuit of this.

  126. I'm going to test myself

  127. that everything that I've been told

  128. will deliver the joy that I'm looking for.

  129. Now, I don't necessarily think here

  130. that we should see that Solomon

  131. is just letting the bricks off completely.

  132. He mentions several times, like in verse 3,

  133. how his heart still guides him with wisdom

  134. in this pursuit.

  135. I don't think he's describing here

  136. complete unchecked hedonism

  137. in the way some people have interpreted this section,

  138. but he is pressing in.

  139. He's pressing in hard to see what he can gain,

  140. to see how he can profit in his search for joy.

  141. First place to start, laughter.

  142. Verse 2.

  143. Maybe this stand-up scene

  144. or giving myself into comedy box sets

  145. or something like that,

  146. maybe that will bring the sort of pleasure

  147. that I'm looking for.

  148. Verse 3.

  149. He then opens a bottle to gladden his heart,

  150. and then he tries to lay hold on folly

  151. to see if, unlike wisdom,

  152. it can bring the kind of gain

  153. that he's looking for

  154. because he is,

  155. verse 3,

  156. looking for the good for mankind.

  157. Laughter,

  158. a glad heart with wine,

  159. maybe folly,

  160. not taking life so seriously,

  161. maybe just being a bit more carefree.

  162. Next he gives himself,

  163. verse 4,

  164. to achievement.

  165. I made great works.

  166. I built houses.

  167. I planted vineyards for myself.

  168. I made myself gardens and parks

  169. and planted them,

  170. all kinds of fruit trees.

  171. Hard work.

  172. That's going to deliver.

  173. Making stuff happen.

  174. Getting things done.

  175. Being productive.

  176. If I can be productive,

  177. I'll feel like I've achieved something,

  178. and there'll be a sense of joy.

  179. He grows his staff.

  180. He grows his wealth.

  181. He grows his cultural CV

  182. and his women,

  183. verse 8.

  184. Singers will play music for him on demand,

  185. and his concubines will give him

  186. other things on demand as well.

  187. He has at his disposal,

  188. at the very tips of his fingers,

  189. whenever he wants it,

  190. the things that we are told

  191. everyone wants.

  192. Money,

  193. sex,

  194. and power.

  195. These are the things

  196. that promise to deliver

  197. what we desire,

  198. and these are the things

  199. that we give ourselves to.

  200. And then,

  201. he tops even that.

  202. Look at verse 9.

  203. He tops that

  204. with the intoxicating thrill

  205. of the recognition

  206. of his peers.

  207. He was a great one.

  208. He was a great one.

  209. There were plaques

  210. all over Jerusalem

  211. with his name on them.

  212. Anything there

  213. in what he's talking about

  214. that you haven't thought

  215. at some point

  216. that if you had it,

  217. then you'd be happy.

  218. If you had more of it,

  219. then you would find the joy

  220. that you long for.

  221. More pleasure,

  222. more possessions,

  223. more productivity,

  224. more power,

  225. more prestige,

  226. then you'd be happy.

  227. Then you would remain,

  228. then joy would remain

  229. in your grasp.

  230. It wouldn't slip

  231. through your fingers

  232. like it always seems to do.

  233. That's what we want,

  234. isn't it?

  235. That's what we've been

  236. trained to believe.

  237. That's what our culture

  238. is telling us we need.

  239. More pleasure,

  240. more possessions,

  241. more productivity,

  242. more power,

  243. more prestige.

  244. Then you'll have

  245. the good life.

  246. Look at 2 verse 10.

  247. Whatever my eyes desired,

  248. I did not keep from them.

  249. I kept my heart

  250. from no pleasure.

  251. Now, if I was to say that to you,

  252. there would be a limit

  253. to what I could actually

  254. get hold of.

  255. Not the king,

  256. with all his royal privilege.

  257. When he said,

  258. I kept my heart

  259. from no pleasure,

  260. you can't think of a pleasure

  261. that he didn't try.

  262. And look at his conclusion.

  263. Chapter 2 verse 11.

  264. Here's where his research project

  265. got him.

  266. Then I considered

  267. all that my hands had done

  268. and the toil I had expended

  269. in doing it.

  270. And behold,

  271. all was vanity,

  272. a striving after wind.

  273. And there was nothing

  274. to be gained

  275. under the sun.

  276. All the learning

  277. and all the laughter,

  278. all the work,

  279. all the wealth,

  280. all the silver,

  281. all the servants,

  282. and what's he left with?

  283. Vapor.

  284. Handfuls of vapor.

  285. Bagfuls of vapor.

  286. Bin bagfuls of vapor.

  287. It's all a striving

  288. after the wind.

  289. That phrase,

  290. striving after the wind,

  291. means literally

  292. shepherding the wind.

  293. In this research project,

  294. Solomon has given his heart

  295. to a search for joy

  296. and he reports back.

  297. He says,

  298. looking for gain

  299. in these things,

  300. looking for meaning,

  301. in laughter,

  302. work,

  303. possessions,

  304. power,

  305. is the same kind

  306. of madness

  307. as standing on a headland

  308. on a windy day

  309. and trying to direct the wind.

  310. That's his research.

  311. But Solomon doesn't simply

  312. share this discovery with us

  313. from his own bitter experience.

  314. He explains that he's made

  315. another discovery in the process.

  316. His research actually leads

  317. secondly to his realization.

  318. His realization.

  319. Go back up to 113 again.

  320. He says,

  321. He realizes

  322. that the misty nature of things,

  323. the vaporous nature of reality,

  324. flows from a world

  325. that is broken.

  326. His language here

  327. takes us right back.

  328. The children of man here

  329. is literally

  330. the sons of Adam.

  331. And the painful business

  332. and the crooked things

  333. that cannot be straightened,

  334. they are the fruit of the curse

  335. that God has laid on the world

  336. in Genesis chapter 3

    Genesis 3 chapter mention

  337. after Adam's fall.

  338. This is why

  339. Solomon's search

  340. for gain

  341. gleaned nothing.

  342. And this is why

  343. all our works

  344. that are done under the sun,

  345. verse 14,

  346. our vapor

  347. and an exercise

  348. in directing the wind.

  349. God has subjected

  350. our world

  351. to futility.

  352. We can't

  353. straighten out

  354. the things that are crooked

  355. because God has made them

  356. that way.

  357. We can't count

  358. the things that are lacking

  359. because God has made it

  360. that way.

  361. That is just

  362. how it is

  363. in this world

  364. in which we live.

  365. When you choose

  366. to live life

  367. on your terms

  368. in God's world,

  369. that's what Adam did

  370. in the garden.

  371. He grasped

  372. after gain

  373. in a garden

  374. of gift.

  375. Now that's important

  376. that we know that.

  377. People think that God

  378. was being mean

  379. when He told Adam

  380. not to touch the tree

  381. of the knowledge

  382. of good and evil.

  383. But there was

  384. a whole garden

  385. of gift.

  386. There were lots

  387. of other trees

  388. that he could have had.

  389. There was one

  390. that he was not

  391. allowed to touch yet

  392. because the knowledge

  393. of good and evil,

  394. he wasn't yet ready

  395. to handle that.

  396. He wasn't yet mature

  397. enough to discern

  398. good and evil.

  399. That belonged

  400. to God alone.

  401. But Adam

  402. grasped.

  403. He grasped

  404. for profit

  405. for himself.

  406. And in disobeying God,

  407. he plunged

  408. the whole world

  409. into sin.

  410. He drug us

  411. with Him.

  412. That's the reason

  413. why we do the things

  414. that we don't want

  415. to do in life.

  416. That's why

  417. those things

  418. that we wish

  419. were true

  420. of our character

  421. more and more

  422. seem to elude us.

  423. That's why we sin.

  424. And that is why

  425. God has judged

  426. the world in this way.

  427. Solomon has come

  428. to recognize

  429. that the world

  430. is like this

  431. because it's broken.

  432. But it is also

  433. the fruit

  434. of our rebellion.

  435. It is the fruit

  436. of this sin

  437. that Solomon's research

  438. has led him to realize.

  439. The fruit

  440. of that rebellion

  441. is this.

  442. Death steals

  443. everything.

  444. And Solomon says,

  445. look,

  446. if you've got to choose,

  447. wisdom is better

  448. than folly,

  449. 2 verse 14.

  450. Better to make

  451. good decisions

  452. in life

  453. than bad ones.

  454. Basic common sense.

  455. But,

  456. whether you're

  457. the wisest man

  458. in the world,

  459. 2 verse 14,

  460. or you're

  461. the biggest idiot

  462. that has ever

  463. walked the face

  464. of the earth,

  465. the end is the same

  466. for both.

  467. The professor

  468. of wisdom

  469. and the guy

  470. who makes

  471. dumb decision

  472. after dumb decision

  473. will,

  474. in the end,

  475. both find themselves

  476. in the grave.

  477. One out of one

  478. dies.

  479. That's the bottom line.

  480. But there are,

  481. do you notice,

  482. two implications

  483. of this

  484. that Solomon

  485. finds particularly

  486. galling.

  487. The first is

  488. in verse 16.

  489. It's this.

  490. It's not just

  491. that you're going

  492. to die,

  493. but you're going

  494. to be forgotten.

  495. Verse 16,

  496. four of the wise,

  497. as of the fool,

  498. there is no

  499. enduring remembrance.

  500. Seeing,

  501. as to come,

  502. all will have

  503. been long forgotten.

  504. How the wise

  505. dies just like

  506. the fool.

  507. He's saying,

  508. death doesn't

  509. discriminate

  510. from the top

  511. of society

  512. to the bottom.

  513. No one can

  514. outsmart,

  515. no one can

  516. anti-aging

  517. protocol

  518. their way

  519. out of it.

  520. And while

  521. there may be

  522. a funeral

  523. with a few

  524. warm words

  525. offered in

  526. your memory,

  527. there is a

  528. good chance

  529. that your

  530. children's

  531. children won't

  532. know your

  533. name.

  534. And if they

  535. do,

  536. their children

  537. probably won't

  538. know your

  539. name.

  540. I remember

  541. a few years

  542. ago,

  543. my uncle,

  544. my dad's

  545. brother,

  546. he was in

  547. his 80s,

  548. and he was

  549. coming to the

  550. end of his

  551. life,

  552. and I asked

  553. him about

  554. his grandparents,

  555. so my

  556. great-grandparents.

  557. What was

  558. your

  559. grandfather's

  560. name?

  561. This was

  562. his grandfather,

  563. he's towards

  564. the end of

  565. his life,

  566. he's not in

  567. great health,

  568. but it took

  569. him a long

  570. time to

  571. remember.

  572. Do you

  573. remember the

  574. first name of

  575. your great-grandparents?

  576. Do you remember

  577. what they did

  578. for a living?

  579. Do you know

  580. that?

  581. There was a

  582. time when

  583. they thought

  584. that the

  585. world revolved

  586. around them

  587. the way we

  588. think that it

  589. revolves around

  590. us.

  591. There was a

  592. time when

  593. they thought

  594. they were

  595. the

  596. generation,

  597. and yet

  598. you don't

  599. know their

  600. names.

  601. It's

  602. vapor.

  603. We'll all

  604. be forgotten.

  605. But you

  606. won't just

  607. be forgotten,

  608. verse 18.

  609. Whatever

  610. you've

  611. managed to

  612. store up,

  613. you'll

  614. leave it

  615. all to

  616. someone else.

  617. I hated

  618. all my

  619. toil in

  620. which I

  621. toil under

  622. the sun.

  623. This

  624. research

  625. project made

  626. him really

  627. cross.

  628. Why,

  629. seeing that I

  630. must leave it

  631. to the man

  632. who will

  633. come after

  634. me,

  635. and who

  636. knows

  637. whether

  638. he'll

  639. be wise

  640. or a

  641. fool,

  642. yet he

  643. will be

  644. master of

  645. all for

  646. which I

  647. toiled and

  648. used my

  649. wisdom under

  650. the sun.

  651. This

  652. also is

  653. vanity.

  654. Everything

  655. that you

  656. worked for

  657. will be

  658. left to

  659. those who

  660. follow.

  661. Every

  662. single

  663. penny

  664. that accrues

  665. to your

  666. name will

  667. go to

  668. someone else.

  669. As of

  670. this

  671. afternoon,

  672. Elon Musk

  673. is the

  674. richest man

  675. in the

  676. world.

  677. Do you

  678. know how

  679. much he

  680. will leave?

  681. All of

  682. it.

  683. That old

  684. adage,

  685. you can't

  686. take it

  687. with you,

  688. is true.

  689. And Solomon

  690. says that

  691. even with

  692. whatever clever

  693. stuff you're

  694. able to do

  695. with wills,

  696. you don't

  697. know whether

  698. you're leaving

  699. it to a

  700. fool or a

  701. wise man.

  702. Whatever

  703. control you

  704. want to have

  705. over your

  706. wealth,

  707. you lose

  708. all of

  709. that when

  710. you die.

  711. It's a

  712. stark

  713. realization

  714. for

  715. Solomon.

  716. And I

  717. wonder if

  718. this research

  719. actually became

  720. an attempt to

  721. chase this

  722. basic reality

  723. from his

  724. mind.

  725. That's what

  726. we do,

  727. isn't it?

  728. When we

  729. experience some

  730. of the

  731. vapor of

  732. life,

  733. when we

  734. feel this

  735. sense of

  736. vanity

  737. about

  738. everything,

  739. we know

  740. that laughter

  741. doesn't fix

  742. the problems

  743. of the

  744. world.

  745. Just

  746. listen to

  747. a single

  748. interview

  749. with a

  750. comedian.

  751. Their

  752. lives are

  753. completely

  754. surrounded

  755. with

  756. laughter,

  757. and yet

  758. there's

  759. rarely any

  760. joy when

  761. you get

  762. behind the

  763. mask.

  764. We know

  765. that wine

  766. doesn't work,

  767. and we know

  768. that any

  769. achievements

  770. that we've

  771. made didn't

  772. deliver the

  773. lasting joy

  774. that we'd

  775. hoped for,

  776. plus we

  777. know that

  778. anything that

  779. accrues to

  780. our account

  781. now will

  782. be wiped

  783. out by

  784. death.

  785. This is the

  786. world we

  787. live in.

  788. So what

  789. can we do

  790. but distract

  791. ourselves with

  792. anything that

  793. we can find?

  794. The

  795. alternative to

  796. distracting

  797. ourselves is

  798. there in

  799. verse 20.

  800. And gave

  801. my heart

  802. up to

  803. despair.

  804. Very

  805. honest.

  806. But let's

  807. be honest

  808. ourselves.

  809. What else

  810. is there?

  811. There are

  812. lots of

  813. addicts that

  814. live on the

  815. streets around

  816. where we

  817. live, and

  818. you see

  819. them in

  820. various

  821. states, and

  822. my heart

  823. goes out

  824. to them.

  825. But there's

  826. an honesty

  827. about the

  828. way that

  829. they live.

  830. All they

  831. want is to

  832. shut out the

  833. despair.

  834. All they

  835. want is to

  836. be taken

  837. for a few

  838. moments out

  839. of their

  840. days that

  841. are full

  842. of sorrow.

  843. And that's

  844. what that

  845. hit will

  846. do for a

  847. few minutes

  848. and they'll

  849. do anything

  850. to get

  851. it.

  852. It is an

  853. escape from

  854. the pain.

  855. It is a

  856. release from

  857. the despair.

  858. We have

  859. our own

  860. ways of

  861. doing the

  862. same thing.

  863. Some are

  864. more respectable

  865. than others,

  866. some not so

  867. respectable.

  868. Solomon gathered

  869. singers to

  870. play for him

  871. at his

  872. request to

  873. keep him

  874. from silence

  875. and his

  876. inner thoughts.

  877. We do the

  878. same thing

  879. with earbuds.

  880. We don't

  881. need to hire

  882. singers to

  883. follow us

  884. around and

  885. be a little

  886. bit anti-social

  887. I suppose in

  888. some ways.

  889. But we do

  890. exactly the

  891. same thing.

  892. We just plug

  893. our earbuds in

  894. and put the

  895. music on.

  896. Or the talk

  897. show or the

  898. radio or

  899. something.

  900. Just some

  901. noise or

  902. other to

  903. shut out

  904. the despair.

  905. Screens,

  906. social media,

  907. any digitized

  908. diversion from

  909. the reality of

  910. this sorrowful,

  911. vaporous world.

  912. Well, is

  913. despair the

  914. only option?

  915. Happily not.

  916. Solomon has

  917. actually discovered

  918. that there's

  919. another way to

  920. think about

  921. death and

  922. that it is

  923. not to

  924. close our

  925. eyes and

  926. shut it

  927. out.

  928. But actually,

  929. to stare at

  930. it and to

  931. stare at the

  932. reality of

  933. that and to

  934. allow it to

  935. reshape the

  936. way we think

  937. about the

  938. present.

  939. To allow the

  940. future,

  941. whenever that

  942. will be,

  943. and our

  944. death to

  945. teach us

  946. how to

  947. live now

  948. in the

  949. present in

  950. God's world.

  951. All is not

  952. lost.

  953. When we

  954. accept that

  955. this life is

  956. vapor,

  957. when we stop

  958. trying to

  959. resist it

  960. and try to

  961. store things up

  962. for ourselves,

  963. to try and

  964. make some

  965. gain in

  966. this world,

  967. when we

  968. accept that

  969. this life is

  970. vapor, we're

  971. actually liberated

  972. from trying to

  973. control it for

  974. our gain.

  975. We're set free

  976. to enjoy

  977. actually receiving

  978. what we have

  979. as a gift.

  980. Solomon identifies

  981. this then as our

  982. third point,

  983. his resolution.

  984. He's given us

  985. his research,

  986. he's told us

  987. about his

  988. realization,

  989. and thirdly,

  990. here's his

  991. resolution.

  992. There is nothing

  993. better for a

  994. person than that

  995. he should eat and

  996. drink and find

  997. enjoyment.

  998. That's what we're

  999. looking for,

  1000. enjoyment in

  1001. his toil.

  1002. This also I saw

  1003. is from the

  1004. hand of God,

  1005. for apart from

  1006. him who can

  1007. eat or who

  1008. can have

  1009. enjoyment?

  1010. For to the

  1011. one who pleases

  1012. him God has

  1013. given wisdom

  1014. and knowledge

  1015. and joy.

  1016. Enjoyment.

  1017. Enjoyment.

  1018. Joy.

  1019. A life marked

  1020. by joy is

  1021. available in a

  1022. world of vapor.

  1023. How is this

  1024. so?

  1025. Well, did you

  1026. notice?

  1027. Given from

  1028. the hand of

  1029. God.

  1030. The theologian

  1031. Ian Proven

  1032. summarizes the

  1033. point, which is

  1034. the point of

  1035. the whole book,

  1036. saying this,

  1037. life in God's

  1038. world is gift,

  1039. not gain.

  1040. And that is

  1041. the open secret.

  1042. That is the

  1043. open secret.

  1044. Life in God's

  1045. world is gift,

  1046. not gain.

  1047. When we use the

  1048. world for our

  1049. own ends,

  1050. our gain,

  1051. we're just left

  1052. with handfuls of

  1053. vapor.

  1054. We're just left

  1055. directing the

  1056. breeze.

  1057. But while the

  1058. vapor remains,

  1059. and it does

  1060. remain,

  1061. understanding that

  1062. life is a gift

  1063. from God doesn't

  1064. automatically make

  1065. it easy.

  1066. We're going to

  1067. see that again

  1068. and again and

  1069. again.

  1070. You know it

  1071. from your own

  1072. experience.

  1073. But there is

  1074. real joy in the

  1075. receipt of the

  1076. gift.

  1077. I said last

  1078. week, God

  1079. gives two gifts.

  1080. One is the food

  1081. and the drink,

  1082. and the other is

  1083. the ability to

  1084. enjoy them.

  1085. And that is

  1086. clear with a

  1087. more literal

  1088. translation,

  1089. actually, of

  1090. verse 24.

  1091. Have a look at

  1092. verse 24.

  1093. More literal

  1094. translation would

  1095. be this.

  1096. There is no

  1097. good in a

  1098. person than

  1099. that he should

  1100. eat and drink

  1101. and find

  1102. enjoyment in

  1103. his toil.

  1104. This also I

  1105. saw is from

  1106. the hand of

  1107. God, for

  1108. apart from

  1109. him who

  1110. can eat or

  1111. who can

  1112. have enjoyment.

  1113. There is no

  1114. inherent good

  1115. in a person

  1116. that they

  1117. should be able

  1118. to find

  1119. enjoyment in

  1120. their work.

  1121. He is

  1122. saying the

  1123. only way that

  1124. we can enjoy

  1125. the things that

  1126. are given to

  1127. us by God

  1128. is from

  1129. God, and

  1130. recognizing that

  1131. he is the

  1132. one who gives

  1133. the gift.

  1134. Just with

  1135. food, think

  1136. about it, just

  1137. with food, there

  1138. are loads of

  1139. reasons why we

  1140. aren't able to

  1141. enjoy it.

  1142. We think, oh,

  1143. there is better

  1144. quality elsewhere,

  1145. and we think, oh,

  1146. this maybe isn't

  1147. the best thing I

  1148. could be eating.

  1149. Oh, there is a

  1150. different restaurant

  1151. that is better.

  1152. You can't enjoy

  1153. the seven-pound

  1154. bottle of wine

  1155. because you know

  1156. that there is a

  1157. seventy-pound bottle

  1158. of wine that is

  1159. better.

  1160. And the seventy-pound

  1161. one was okay,

1162. but it is not as

  1163. good as the

  1164. seven-hundred-pound

  1165. one or the

  1166. seven-thousand-pound

  1167. one.

  1168. That never stops.

  1169. That is the

  1170. treadmill of

  1171. never being

  1172. satisfied.

  1173. That is why

  1174. all of these

  1175. things are

  1176. vapor.

  1177. If even

  1178. eating and

  1179. drinking needs

  1180. to be about

  1181. gain rather

  1182. than receiving

  1183. what God has

  1184. provided and

  1185. saying thank

  1186. you and

  1187. enjoying it,

  1188. then it will

  1189. never satisfy.

  1190. The same is

  1191. true of all

  1192. things that

  1193. Solomon tried.

  1194. Wisdom,

  1195. knowledge,

  1196. money,

  1197. sex,

  1198. power.

  1199. There is no

  1200. inherent joy in

  1201. any of these

  1202. things if we

  1203. don't acknowledge

  1204. the divine

  1205. giver.

  1206. You don't need

  1207. me to provide

  1208. you with examples

  1209. of people for

  1210. whom these

  1211. things have

  1212. become a

  1213. source of

  1214. misery despite

  1215. having them

  1216. in abundance.

  1217. But I

  1218. can't get

  1219. old Matthew

  1220. Perry out

  1221. of my

  1222. head.

  1223. Chandler

  1224. Bing from

  1225. Friends,

  1226. he had

  1227. superstardom

  1228. and he

  1229. pursued gain

  1230. in laughter

  1231. and wealth

  1232. and wine

  1233. and sex

  1234. and fame.

  1235. And a

  1236. couple of

  1237. months ago

  1238. he wound

  1239. up addicted

  1240. to pain

  1241. medication

  1242. and a

  1243. couple of

  1244. months ago

  1245. we discovered

  1246. that he had

  1247. a live-in

  1248. servant

  1249. whose job

  1250. was to

  1251. inject him

  1252. with ketamine

  1253. every day.

  1254. When we

  1255. pursue gain

  1256. in those

  1257. things,

  1258. rather than

  1259. receiving them

  1260. as gifts

  1261. to be enjoyed,

  1262. they don't

  1263. just leave

  1264. us empty

  1265. vapor,

  1266. but they

  1267. can consume

  1268. us.

  1269. Solomon has

  1270. discovered

  1271. that God

  1272. is the

  1273. source of

  1274. joy.

  1275. In verse

  1276. 26,

  1277. he has

  1278. given wisdom

  1279. and knowledge

  1280. and joy

  1281. to those

  1282. who please

  1283. him.

  1284. When you

  1285. grasp for

  1286. joy on your

  1287. own terms,

  1288. it always

  1289. eludes you

  1290. but when

  1291. you trust

  1292. God,

  1293. he gives

  1294. joy and

  1295. like all

  1296. his gifts,

  1297. he passes

  1298. it out,

  1299. not with

  1300. a teaspoon

  1301. but with

  1302. a shovel.

  1303. If we

  1304. can let

  1305. go of

  1306. grasping

  1307. for these

  1308. things,

  1309. if we

  1310. can let

  1311. go of

  1312. thinking

  1313. that if

  1314. we get

  1315. that,

  1316. then we'll

  1317. have some

  1318. gain in

  1319. God's

  1320. world and

  1321. if we

  1322. just receive

  1323. what he

  1324. gives us

  1325. and we

  1326. say thank

  1327. you and

  1328. we enjoy

  1329. it in

  1330. the moment,

  1331. we're set

  1332. free.

  1333. That is

  1334. joy.

  1335. And that is

  1336. the offer

  1337. that Jesus

  1338. makes to

  1339. his disciples.

  1340. You remember

  1341. in John

    John 16 chapter mention

  1342. chapter 16,

  1343. they have

  1344. been with

  1345. Jesus,

  1346. he has

  1347. told them

  1348. that he'll

  1349. be going

  1350. to the

  1351. cross for

  1352. their sin

  1353. and then

  1354. returning

  1355. to the

  1356. father and

  1357. they're

  1358. anxious.

  1359. They want

  1360. to hold

  1361. on to

  1362. him for

  1363. themselves.

  1364. But he

  1365. says he'll

  1366. send his

  1367. spirit and

  1368. he will

  1369. give them

  1370. joy.

  1371. He says,

  1372. ask and

  1373. you will

  1374. receive that

  1375. your joy

  1376. may be

  1377. half full.

  1378. Your joy

  1379. might just

  1380. be enough

  1381. to get

  1382. you to

  1383. the end

  1384. of the

  1385. day.

  1386. That's

  1387. not what

  1388. he says,

  1389. is it?

  1390. Ask and

  1391. you will

  1392. receive that

  1393. your joy

  1394. may be

  1395. full.

  1396. The

  1397. fullness

  1398. of joy.

  1399. That is

  1400. the offer

  1401. of the

  1402. gospel.

  1403. That is

  1404. the openness

  1405. of all

  1406. open secrets

  1407. that in

  1408. the Lord

  1409. Jesus,

  1410. the one

  1411. who holds

  1412. you fast

  1413. even in

  1414. the vapor

  1415. of real

  1416. life.

  1417. while she

  1418. may not

  1419. be able

  1420. to master

  1421. life,

  1422. you can

  1423. enjoy it.

  1424. Let's pray

  1425. together.
