  1. If you've got a Bible, if you need a church Bible, grab one at the door. It will really help you go through. It's on page 801. Mark Twain was a very famous American novelist.

  2. He was the author of books like Tom Sawyer or Huckleberry Finn. And I have no idea whether Mark Twain was a Christian, but I can tell you that he had a healthy respect for the Bible.

  3. He knew that the Bible was no ordinary piece of literature. He once said, most people are bothered by passages of the Bible that they do not understand.

  4. But the passages that bother me are the passages I do understand. Let me say that again. Most passages, most people are bothered by passages of Scripture that they do not understand.

  5. But the passages that bother me are the passages that I do understand.

  6. And this morning in Malachi chapter 2, we come to a chapter that isn't very hard to understand at all.

    Malachi 2 chapter mention

  7. But it may certainly bother you if you're serious about it.

  8. You may have noticed when Reuben read to it that the word covenant keeps coming up.

  9. It's repeated several times.

  10. And the covenant is a solemn and a binding agreement between two parties.

  11. We talk about the covenant of marriage.

  12. And in these verses, God refers to several different covenants.

  13. Binding and solemn agreements.

  14. That's how we're going to divide the passage in.

  15. Verses 1 to 9, you'll see the first one.

  16. You might remember from last week that Malachi is specifically addressing the priests.

  17. The religious leaders of the people of God.

  18. And they continue to be the focus of the next session.

  19. You see it in verse 1.

  20. And now, O priests, you lot, you priests, this command is for you.

  21. And what follows is an admonition or a rebuke or criticism of some sort.

  22. And again, just like we saw last week in chapter 1, verse 6,

  23. the issue continues to be the failure of God's priests to give God the honour that he deserves.

  24. So look with me at verse 2.

  25. If you will not listen, if you will not take it to heart to give honour to my name,

  26. says the Lord of hosts, then I will send curse upon you.

  27. And I will curse your blessings.

  28. Indeed, I've already cursed them because you do not lay it to heart.

  29. You can hear the heat in those words, can't you?

  30. God is angry with the priests of Israel.

  31. So angry, he says in verse 3,

  32. Behold, I will rebuke your offspring and I will spread dung on your faces,

  33. the dung of your offerings, and you will be taken away with it.

  34. It's very, it's a polite translation.

  35. What he's saying?

  36. That when the Israelites made their animal sacrifices,

  37. the dung or the offal, it was the inedible part, the internal organs,

  38. that was to be taken away from the sacrifice and burnt separately.

  39. It's not a pleasant image at all.

  40. But whatever has stirred God to be this angry,

  41. it must be, mustn't it?

  42. Very serious indeed.

  43. And from verse 4 onwards, God makes it clear what the problem is.

  44. So if you look in verse 4,

  45. and then you look at verse 8,

  46. God refers to the covenant that he made with Levi.

  47. Levi was the founding father of the tribe of Levi.

  48. They became known as the tribe of the Levites.

  49. And it was the Levites, wasn't it,

  50. who were chosen out of the 12 tribes of Israel to be the priests.

  51. They were to be the religious teachers.

  52. They would represent God to the people and the people to God.

  53. And the covenant he made with them outlined the obligations that they had.

  54. And so Malachi recalls them.

  55. Look at verse 5.

  56. He says,

  57. It says,

  58. The priests were to be God's mouthpiece.

  59. They were to be God's messengers.

  60. They were to instruct God's people.

  61. And they were to do it truthfully.

  62. And if they did their job properly,

  63. then the people of God would turn away from their sin.

  64. But the priests in Malachi's day weren't doing their job properly.

  65. They'd completely drop the ball.

  66. And so instead of calling people to turn from their sin,

  67. they've actually caused people to stumble into sin.

  68. In fact, they themselves as priests had turned away and become corrupt.

  69. Look at verse 8 and 9.

  70. But you, you, O priest, you have turned aside from the way.

  71. You've caused many to stumble by your instruction.

  72. You've corrupted the covenant of Levi, says the Lord of hosts.

  73. And so I will make you despised and abased among the people.

  74. Inasmuch as you do not keep my ways, but show partiality in your instruction.

  75. God says, you've violated, you've broken the covenant, the agreement,

  76. the binding solemn agreement that I made with Levi.

  77. With Levi's descendants.

  78. And you've broken it.

  79. And what God is very serious about, they have treated with contempt.

  80. They've not honoured him, and so he is angry.

  81. What are we to make of it?

  82. Since Jesus has come,

  83. we don't have priests anymore like they did in the Old Testament.

  84. Jesus is our priest, our perfect priest.

  85. I and Reuben are not your priests.

  86. Jesus is the one who represents God to us,

  87. and us to God.

  88. The New Testament teaches, in a sense,

  89. we are all priests.

  90. All of us who have trusted in the Lord Jesus,

  91. we are all in him,

  92. we are all priests.

  93. We are to represent God to the world.

  94. Your elders are not priests.

  95. But nevertheless, God still appoints leaders in his church.

  96. He appoints men to lead his church,

  97. and to teach his people.

  98. He has laid a responsibility on those preachers and teachers,

  99. on elders and ministers.

  100. But he also, doesn't he,

  101. gives that responsibility from time to time,

  102. to Sunday school teachers,

  103. like you were taught this morning,

  104. to youth group leaders,

  105. to those who instruct our children,

  106. to those who teach Bibles.

  107. And it is a,

  108. a Bible study,

  109. it is a very serious business.

  110. So look at James chapter 3, verse 1,

    James 3:1

  111. or let me read it to you.

  112. You can turn there if you want.

  113. And these words are really sobering.

  114. And the Apostle James writes to the church,

  115. and he says this,

  116. Not many of you should presume to be teachers.

  117. Not many of you should become teachers,

  118. my brothers,

  119. for you know that we who teach

  120. will be judged with greater strictness.

  121. Lots has changed since Malachi's day,

  122. and our day,

  123. and our day,

  124. but one thing hasn't.

  125. And that is this,

  126. that God is still very serious

  127. about people turning away from their sin.

  128. And those who are his messengers,

  129. his mouthpiece,

  130. must take that responsibility very seriously.

  131. You must demand of those who preach to you

  132. that they teach you the truth,

  133. and nothing but the truth.

  134. Nothing false ought to be on their lips.

  135. And James reminds us, doesn't he,

  136. that when we speak for God,

  137. we are accountable to God.

  138. There will be a special judgment for us.

  139. It's a chilling verse.

  140. For those of us who teach and preach God's word.

  141. So it's not something,

  142. and we do for fun,

  143. it's not something we do as an adrenaline rush.

  144. It's not something that we do

  145. simply out of obligation.

  146. Instead, it must be something, isn't it,

  147. that the preacher must work very hard at.

  148. They put time into it.

  149. They should take great care.

  150. And the implications for us as a church family

  151. is that it's far more important

  152. how the Bible is taught

  153. than what games and activities we do

  154. in the youth group.

  155. It's far more important, isn't it,

  156. that the Bible is taught clearly and faithful

  157. than that our children think

  158. they've had a wonderful time in our kids' clubs.

  159. And so our preparation

  160. as leaders of youth groups,

  161. Bible studies,

  162. in whatever context in the church,

  163. is to reflect what is most important to God.

  164. And so that's a great thing, isn't it,

  165. for those of you who are serving in ministries,

  166. to think about the different ministries

  167. in church life

  168. and think,

  169. are we reflecting

  170. what is most important to God?

  171. Whether it's in the youth group

  172. or Little Stars

  173. or the language class,

  174. whatever context

  175. we're teaching God's Word,

  176. God is very serious indeed

  177. about how His Word is taught.

  178. Speaking God's Word

  179. is a very serious business

  180. and we ought to treat it

  181. as seriously as God does.

  182. Malachi turns his attention then

  183. to what he calls

  184. the covenant of our fathers.

  185. And he's talking there

  186. about the solemn binding agreement

  187. that he made

  188. with the whole nation of Israel.

  189. And so,

  190. at this point he addresses

  191. the whole nation,

  192. the whole people of God,

  193. not just the priests.

  194. Look at verse 10.

  195. Have we all not one father?

  196. Has not one God created us?

  197. Why then are we faithless

  198. to one another

  199. profaning the covenant

  200. of our fathers?

  201. The covenant God made

  202. with our forefathers,

  203. with their ancestors,

  204. has been violated,

  205. snapped, broken.

  206. Because they've broken faith

  207. with one another.

  208. And that is they've broken

  209. the bonds of commitment,

  210. of trust,

  211. by which God's people

  212. are bound to.

  213. How have they done that?

  214. Look verse 11.

  215. Just glance down.

  216. He uses Judah and Jacob

  217. as synonyms

  218. for the people of Israel.

  219. Now, Judah's been faithless

  220. and an abomination

  221. has been committed

  222. in Israel and in Jerusalem.

  223. For Judah has profaned

  224. the sanctuary of the Lord,

  225. which he loves

  226. and has married

  227. the daughter

  228. of a foreign God.

  229. May the Lord

  230. cut off

  231. from the tents of Jacob

  232. and the descendants

  233. of the man

  234. who does this,

  235. who brings an offering

  236. to the Lord of hosts.

  237. The issue is here.

  238. This is the issue.

  239. The issue is

  240. they have

  241. intermarried

  242. with those

  243. who are not Israelites.

  244. That's what God means

  245. by marrying

  246. the daughter

  247. of a foreign God.

  248. And some of you

  249. might be sitting there

  250. thinking,

  251. what's the big deal

  252. in that?

  253. Is God racist?

  254. Of course not.

  255. As in everything

  256. we've seen

  257. in Malachi so far,

  258. the problem is

  259. that they have broken

  260. God's clear commands.

  261. So let me read to you

  262. from Deuteronomy chapter 7.

    Deuteronomy 7 chapter mention

  263. It's from earlier on

  264. in the Old Testament.

  265. Deuteronomy chapter 7,

    Deuteronomy 7:1

  266. verse 1.

  267. When the Lord,

  268. your God,

  269. brings you,

  270. the people of God,

  271. into the land

  272. that you are entering

  273. to take possession of it

  274. and clears away

  275. the many nations

  276. before you,

  277. the Hittites,

  278. the Girgashites,

  279. the Amorites,

  280. the Canaanites,

  281. the Perizzites,

  282. the Hivites,

  283. the Jebusites,

  284. seven nations

  285. more numerous

  286. and more mighty

  287. than you.

  288. And when the Lord God

  289. gives them over to you

  290. and you defeat them,

  291. you must devote them

  292. to complete destruction.

  293. You shall make

  294. no covenant with them

  295. and you shall show

  296. no mercy to them

  297. and you shall not

  298. intermarry with them.

  299. Giving your daughters

  300. to their sons

  301. or taking their daughters

  302. to your sons

  303. for they would

  304. turn away

  305. your sons

  306. from following me

  307. to serve other gods.

  308. Then the anger

  309. of the Lord

  310. would be kindled

  311. against you

  312. and he would

  313. destroy you quickly.

  314. Do you see,

  315. God not only

  316. gave the Israelites

  317. a command,

  318. I think you should be

  319. willing to see that,

  320. not to intermarry

  321. with those who didn't

  322. follow the God of Israel.

  323. He gave them the command

  324. but he also gave them

  325. the reason for it.

  326. that when you marry

  327. outside of the people

  328. of God,

  329. when you marry

  330. those who do not

  331. worship me,

  332. who worship other gods,

  333. God is concerned

  334. about that

  335. because the Israelites

  336. would turn away

  337. from serving him

  338. to worship the idols

  339. of the other nations.

  340. And that is

  341. in many ways

  342. the story

  343. of the Old Testament.

  344. That when they did

  345. marry outside Israel,

  346. when they did

  347. turn away

  348. from worshipping God

  349. to worshipping,

  350. when they did

  351. into marriage,

  352. they turned away

  353. from worshipping God

  354. to worshipping idols.

  355. King Solomon

  356. is the great example,

  357. isn't it?

  358. It's the classic

  359. and tragic case.

  360. His heart

  361. was turned away.

  362. But they're still

  363. doing it

  364. 800 years later.

  365. And God says

  366. through Malachi,

  367. you've profaned

  368. the covenant.

  369. That means this.

  370. It means that

  371. they've treated

  372. something holy

  373. as if it was unholy.

  374. And they've shown

  375. no seriousness

  376. about what God

  377. is serious about.

  378. And again,

  379. this is still

  380. an issue

  381. that God

  382. is serious about.

  383. In 2 Corinthians

    2 Corinthians 6 chapter mention

  384. chapter 6,

  385. the Apostle Paul

  386. is writing,

  387. talking about

  388. how Christians

  389. are to live

  390. in the world.

  391. He says

  392. that he wants

  393. them to live

  394. in a way,

  395. in a world,

  396. he wants them

  397. to live in a way

  398. that is pure.

  399. And this is

  400. what he says.

  401. Hear these words.

  402. He says,

  403. do not be

  404. unequally yoked

  405. with unbelievers.

  406. For what

  407. partnership

  408. has righteousness

  409. with unrighteousness?

  410. or what

  411. fellowship

  412. does light

  413. have

  414. with darkness?

  415. And Paul

  416. is urging

  417. Christians

  418. like you,

  419. if you've trusted

  420. in the Lord Jesus,

  421. like me,

  422. to be

  423. uncontaminated

  424. in our devotion

  425. to the Lord Jesus.

  426. To be

  427. uncompromising

  428. about our

  429. devotion

  430. to the Lord Jesus.

  431. believers.

  432. And to that end,

  433. he urges us

  434. not to bind

  435. ourselves

  436. to unbelievers

  437. in any sort

  438. of irreversible

  439. partnership.

  440. Now,

  441. I presume

  442. that that

  443. applies to things

  444. apart from marriage

  445. too.

  446. But it certainly

  447. does apply to

  448. marriage.

  449. Whatever form

  450. the yoking

  451. together,

  452. joining together,

  453. takes,

  454. Paul urges us

  455. to be pure

  456. and to maintain

  457. undivided loyalty

  458. to Christ

  459. by avoiding it.

  460. You might feel

  461. this morning

  462. that you are

  463. strong enough

  464. to avoid

  465. being distracted

  466. or contaminated.

  467. But that

  468. doesn't give you

  469. permission,

  470. license,

  471. to disregard

  472. God's command.

  473. And God

  474. says to you

  475. this morning

  476. that you should

  477. be loyal to him

  478. above everything

  479. else.

  480. that we should

  481. love him

  482. more than

  483. anybody else.

  484. And it seems

  485. clear to me

  486. that the teaching

  487. of the Bible

  488. is that Christians

  489. should not

  490. consider marriage

  491. to an unbeliever

  492. an option.

  493. It's not an option.

  494. And so if you

  495. are looking for

  496. a husband or wife

  497. even,

  498. or if you are

  499. looking for a

  500. girlfriend or

  501. boyfriend,

  502. the Apostle Paul

  503. would urge you,

  504. would command

  505. you,

  506. look for

  507. someone who

  508. shares your

  509. commitment to

  510. Jesus Christ.

  511. Let me speak

  512. to our young

  513. people,

  514. to our

  515. teenagers.

  516. Let me

  517. plead with you.

  518. Let me plead

  519. with you as

  520. your minister

  521. that if you

  522. are looking

  523. for a

  524. relationship,

  525. if you are

  526. looking to get

  527. married,

  528. hear these

  529. words,

  530. look for

  531. someone in

  532. the Lord.

  533. God,

  534. I cannot

  535. tell you

  536. the untold

  537. harm and

  538. pain that

  539. it causes

  540. to disregard

  541. that clear

  542. command from

  543. God.

  544. I realise

  545. that this

  546. morning,

  547. this is not

  548. an easy issue

  549. for some of

  550. us.

  551. In fact,

  552. I know for

  553. some of you,

  554. this has been

  555. excruciatingly

  556. hard.

  557. But I need

  558. to tell you

  559. that this is

  560. something that

  561. God is very

  562. serious about.

  563. And so we

  564. should be

  565. serious about

  566. it too.

  567. Thirdly,

  568. and finally,

  569. let's look at

  570. the third

  571. covenant in

  572. verses 13

  573. to 16.

  574. In Malachi 2,

  575. Malachi explains

  576. why God is not

  577. accepting Israel's

  578. offering.

  579. He's not

  580. accepting their

  581. religious devotion.

  582. Do you remember

  583. last week he said,

  584. I'd rather you

  585. shut the doors,

  586. I'd rather you

  587. didn't bother.

  588. And it's because

  589. of the third

  590. covenant violation

  591. in verse 13.

  592. He says,

  593. this is the

  594. second thing

  595. you do.

  596. You cover

  597. the Lord's

  598. altar with

  599. tears.

  600. You come

  601. and you cry.

  602. You love

  603. the music.

  604. You cry

  605. your eyes

  606. out.

  607. And you

  608. weep

  609. and you

  610. groan.

  611. But he

  612. no longer,

  613. God no longer

  614. regards your

  615. offering with

  616. favour from

  617. your hand.

  618. But you say,

  619. why does he

  620. not?

  621. Because the

  622. Lord was

  623. witness between

  624. you and the

  625. wife of your

  626. youth,

  627. to whom you've

  628. been faithless.

  629. though she

  630. is your

  631. companion

  632. and your

  633. wife by

  634. covenant.

  635. Notice again,

  636. it's the dispute

  637. structure.

  638. Do you remember

  639. we saw that

  640. last week?

  641. God says,

  642. this is how you

  643. behaved,

  644. and the Israelites

  645. say,

  646. no,

  647. no,

  648. no,

  649. no,

  650. how have we

  651. done that?

  652. How have we

  653. broken faith?

  654. Here,

  655. it's about the

  656. bond of a

  657. commitment

  658. between a

  659. husband and

  660. a wife.

  661. And that

  662. bond between

  663. a husband and

  664. wife is a

  665. covenant.

  666. And on this

  667. occasion,

  668. God takes the

  669. Israelites back

  670. to creation,

  671. to the

  672. covenant of

  673. creation.

  674. And in the

  675. book of

  676. Genesis,

  677. he reminds

  678. them that

  679. marriage is

  680. two people

  681. becoming one

  682. flesh.

  683. Verse 15,

  684. look at this,

  685. did he not

  686. make them one

  687. with a portion

  688. of the spirit

  689. in their union?

  690. And what was

  691. the one God

  692. seeking?

  693. Godly offspring.

  694. So guard

  695. yourselves in

  696. your spirit.

  697. Let none of

  698. you be

  699. faithless to

  700. the wife of

  701. your youth.

  702. For the man

  703. who does not

  704. love his wife

  705. but divorces

  706. her, says

  707. the Lord,

  708. the God of

  709. Israel,

  710. covers his

  711. garment with

  712. violence,

  713. says the

  714. Lord of

  715. hosts.

  716. So guard

  717. yourselves in

  718. your spirit

  719. and do not

  720. be faithless.

  721. Because of

  722. the oneness

  723. intended for

  724. marriage, God

  725. calls on his

  726. people not

  727. to reverse

  728. that.

  729. Not to

  730. reverse the

  731. oneness

  732. into

  733. two-ness.

  734. By divorcing

  735. their marriage

  736. partner.

  737. Or being

  738. violent to

  739. their marriage

  740. partner.

  741. Because that

  742. could incite

  743. God's

  744. hatred.

  745. And this

  746. too is

  747. something that

  748. God is

  749. serious about.

  750. And again,

  751. the New

  752. Testament,

  753. the teaching

  754. of the

  755. Bible is

  756. telling you

  757. and I,

  758. God hasn't

  759. stopped being

  760. serious about

  761. this.

  762. When Jesus

  763. was quizzed,

  764. you remember,

  765. on the topic

  766. of divorce,

  767. his answer

  768. was really

  769. clear.

  770. Let me read

  771. you from

  772. Matthew 19.

  773. Religious

  774. leaders came

  775. up to him

  776. and they

  777. tested him

  778. by asking,

  779. is it

  780. lawful to

  781. divorce one's

  782. wife for

  783. any reason?

  784. And he

  785. answered them,

  786. have you not

  787. read that he

  788. who created

  789. them,

  790. Genesis 1 and

  791. 2,

  792. from the very

  793. beginning made

  794. them male and

  795. female?

  796. And said,

  797. therefore a man

  798. shall leave his

  799. wife,

  800. his father and

  801. mother and

  802. hold fast to

  803. his wife and

  804. the two shall

  805. become one

  806. flesh.

  807. So they are

  808. no longer two

  809. but one

  810. flesh.

  811. What therefore

  812. God has joined

  813. together,

  814. let not man

  815. separate.

  816. Now of

  817. course,

  818. this isn't

  819. all that the

  820. New Testament

  821. says to us

  822. about divorce

  823. and about

  824. marriage.

  825. Even in

  826. that passage,

  827. Jesus goes

  828. on to

  829. recognise some

  830. of the

  831. complexities

  832. that are

  833. involved.

  834. But God's

  835. view is

  836. not complex.

  837. God still

  838. hates divorce.

  839. And that is

  840. a hard word,

  841. isn't it?

  842. I suspect

  843. some of you

  844. listening to me

  845. might be able

  846. to identify

  847. with Mark

  848. Twain because

  849. passages like

  850. this bother

  851. us.

  852. And what

  853. bothers you

  854. and I is

  855. how black

  856. and white

  857. they are

  858. when we

  859. know that

  860. the world

  861. is full

  862. of grey

  863. so much

  864. of the

  865. time.

  866. And so

  867. particularly

  868. when it

  869. comes to

  870. divorce,

  871. for example,

  872. there is

  873. pain and

  874. complexity in

  875. broken

  876. relationships.

  877. So

  878. complex that

  879. no two

  880. situations

  881. ever see

  882. the same.

  883. And

  884. sometimes

  885. passages

  886. like this

  887. bother us

  888. because we

  889. find it

  890. hard to

  891. see why

  892. God

  893. wants

  894. things

  895. this way.

  896. Sometimes

  897. they bother

  898. us because

  899. what the

  900. Bible says

  901. is so

  902. different

  903. from what

  904. the world

  905. says all

  906. around us.

  907. And

  908. indeed,

  909. what the

  910. Bible says

  911. about some

  912. of the

  913. things we're

  914. looking at

  915. this morning

  916. is incredibly

  917. unpopular

  918. in the

  919. world,

  920. isn't it?

  921. And the

  922. temptation

  923. to simply

  924. say what

  925. people want

  926. us to

  927. say is

  928. very,

  929. very great.

  930. a friend

  931. of mine

  932. I was

  933. with this

  934. week

  935. attended a

  936. wedding

  937. recently

  938. and he

  939. heard a

  940. marriage

  941. sermon.

  942. He was

  943. just there

  944. as a

  945. kind of

  946. punter,

  947. as a

  948. guest.

  949. And the

  950. marriage

  951. sermon

  952. had two

  953. main

  954. points.

  955. The first

  956. point,

  957. point number

  958. one in

  959. this,

  960. he was a

  961. minister,

  962. the point

  963. number one

  964. was there's

  965. a lot of

  966. paperwork

  967. involved in

  968. getting married

  969. these days

  970. and in

  971. marriage.

  972. marriage.

  973. Point number

  974. two was

  975. some marriages

  976. work and

  977. some don't

  978. so we've

  979. got to

  980. hope for

  981. the best

  982. in this

  983. case.

  984. Here is

  985. a man

  986. who was

  987. entrusted

  988. with God's

  989. word to

  990. these people

  991. and he

  992. thoroughly

  993. undermined

  994. God's word.

  995. Even

  996. Christian

  997. leaders

  998. sell out

  999. on the

  1000. truth of

  1001. God's

  1002. word.

  1003. My friend

  1004. found out

  1005. actually this

  1006. man had

  1007. been married

  1008. twice before

  1009. and he

  1010. was saying

  1011. these things

  1012. wasn't he

  1013. to justify

  1014. his own

  1015. existence.

  1016. They say

  1017. things people

  1018. want to

  1019. hear and

  1020. the temptation

  1021. to do so

  1022. is so

  1023. very great

  1024. but that

  1025. is simply

  1026. not the

  1027. right way

  1028. to respond

  1029. to the

  1030. epidemic

  1031. of broken

  1032. marriages

  1033. in our

  1034. country

  1035. and amongst

  1036. your friends

  1037. and amongst

  1038. mine.

  1039. We as

  1040. Christians

  1041. need to be

  1042. people who

  1043. are willing

  1044. and prepared

  1045. to be

  1046. unpopular.

  1047. Who are

  1048. prepared to

  1049. be bothered

  1050. by the

  1051. Bible

  1052. but who

  1053. will remain

  1054. loyal to

  1055. God and

  1056. to God's

  1057. word.

  1058. Who won't

  1059. change it

  1060. and won't

  1061. ignore it

  1062. and won't

  1063. water it

  1064. down but

  1065. will obey

  1066. it.

  1067. Now listen

  1068. to me

  1069. here.

  1070. Particularly

  1071. if you're

  1072. a little bit

  1073. upset by

  1074. what I've

  1075. just said.

  1076. Maybe you're

  1077. a little bit

  1078. angry but I

  1079. want you to

  1080. listen to

  1081. this.

  1082. Malachi is

  1083. not saying

  1084. God hates

  1085. people who've

  1086. been divorced.

  1087. Malachi is

  1088. not saying

  1089. God hates

  1090. people who

  1091. are divorced.

  1092. He's saying

  1093. he hates

  1094. divorce.

  1095. And I

  1096. think if

  1097. you have

  1098. been divorced

  1099. this morning

  1100. you will be

  1101. the quickest

  1102. to understand

  1103. this truth.

  1104. I agree with

  1105. it.

  1106. Because you

  1107. will know

  1108. won't you

  1109. if you've

  1110. been through

  1111. a divorce

  1112. how gut

  1113. wrenchingly

  1114. awful it

  1115. is.

  1116. But this

  1117. verse is

  1118. actually not

  1119. directed

  1120. towards those

  1121. who've been

  1122. through the

  1123. tragedy, the

  1124. grief of

  1125. divorce.

  1126. It's directed

  1127. to those of us

  1128. this morning

  1129. who are

  1130. married or

  1131. who one

  1132. day will

  1133. be married.

  1134. And the

  1135. message for

  1136. you and I

  1137. is this.

  1138. Take the

  1139. covenant of

  1140. marriage

  1141. seriously.

  1142. Marriage is

  1143. for life.

  1144. Anything

  1145. else is

  1146. destructive

  1147. of people

  1148. and heartbreaking

  1149. to God.

  1150. Marriage is

  1151. not to be

  1152. entered into

  1153. lightly.

  1154. Marriage

  1155. requires hard

  1156. work and

  1157. deep

  1158. commitment

  1159. no matter

  1160. what the

  1161. cost.

  1162. And so if

  1163. you've made

  1164. a covenant

  1165. like that

  1166. already or

  1167. will one

  1168. day do it

  1169. do whatever

  1170. it takes

  1171. to keep

  1172. your covenant

  1173. no matter

  1174. what.

  1175. No matter

  1176. what.

  1177. because if

  1178. we are

  1179. serious

  1180. about

  1181. loving

  1182. God

  1183. we will

  1184. be as

  1185. serious

  1186. as God

  1187. is about

  1188. obedience

  1189. in this

  1190. area.

  1191. And I

  1192. hope you're

  1193. seeing this

  1194. morning that

  1195. God is

  1196. serious about

  1197. covenants and

  1198. the keeping

  1199. of covenants.

  1200. And that

  1201. really is the

  1202. big theme of

  1203. Malachi chapter

    Malachi 2 chapter mention

  1204. 2.

  1205. And I

  1206. want you to

  1207. notice this

  1208. profound thread

  1209. that runs

  1210. right the way

  1211. through all of

  1212. these three

  1213. issues that

  1214. Malachi tackles.

  1215. you see

  1216. whenever

  1217. Israel

  1218. the people

  1219. of God

  1220. disobey

  1221. God and

  1222. break

  1223. covenant

  1224. it's got

  1225. implications

  1226. for the

  1227. greatest

  1228. covenant.

  1229. It's got

  1230. implications for

  1231. the greatest

  1232. relationship of

  1233. all.

  1234. Look at

  1235. verse 8

  1236. of chapter

  1237. 2.

  1238. When the

  1239. priests break

  1240. their covenant

  1241. with God

  1242. other people

  1243. are led

  1244. astray

  1245. from God.

  1246. They cause

  1247. others to

  1248. stumble.

  1249. Look at

  1250. verse 11.

  1251. when the

  1252. Israelite

  1253. marries

  1254. non-Israelites

  1255. it desecrates

  1256. the sanctuary

  1257. God's temple.

  1258. It's an insult

  1259. to God

  1260. personally.

  1261. Verse 13.

  1262. When the

  1263. Israelites

  1264. break their

  1265. marriage

  1266. covenant

  1267. God is

  1268. no longer

  1269. pleased with

  1270. their offering.

  1271. He's

  1272. personally

  1273. offended.

  1274. Because when

  1275. God's people

  1276. betray their

  1277. covenant

  1278. when they

  1279. betray his

  1280. word

  1281. they betray

  1282. him.

  1283. And that's

  1284. what Israel

  1285. has done.

  1286. They've

  1287. betrayed

  1288. God.

  1289. And that's

  1290. a pretty

  1291. bleak picture

  1292. this morning

  1293. isn't it?

  1294. What hope

  1295. did Israel

  1296. have?

  1297. What hope

  1298. is there

  1299. for you

  1300. and I

  1301. this morning

  1302. feeling guilty?

  1303. What hope

  1304. is there

  1305. when we

  1306. disobey

  1307. God's

  1308. word?

  1309. Well if

  1310. Israel

  1311. were going

  1312. to take

  1313. Malachi

  1314. seriously

  1315. they were

  1316. prepared to

  1317. take God

  1318. and his

  1319. covenant

  1320. seriously.

  1321. Well they

  1322. might also

  1323. remember a

  1324. promise

  1325. that God

  1326. had made

  1327. about 150

  1328. years earlier.

  1329. It was a

  1330. promise that

  1331. came through

  1332. the prophet

  1333. Jeremiah.

  1334. It was

  1335. our assurance

  1336. of pardon

  1337. that we read

  1338. earlier in

  1339. the service.

  1340. And it was

  1341. God's promise

  1342. for the future

  1343. for the people

  1344. of Israel.

  1345. Behold the

  1346. days are

  1347. coming

  1348. declares the

  1349. Lord when I

  1350. will make a

  1351. new covenant

  1352. with the house

  1353. of Israel

  1354. and the house

  1355. of Judah.

  1356. not like the

  1357. covenant that I

  1358. made with

  1359. their fathers

  1360. on the day

  1361. when I

  1362. took them

  1363. by the

  1364. hand to

  1365. bring them

  1366. out of

  1367. the land

  1368. of Egypt.

  1369. My covenant

  1370. that they

  1371. broke

  1372. though I

  1373. was their

  1374. husband

  1375. declares the

  1376. Lord.

  1377. For this

  1378. is the

  1379. covenant that

  1380. I will make

  1381. with them

  1382. the house

  1383. of Israel

  1384. after those

  1385. days declares

  1386. the Lord.

  1387. I will put

  1388. my law

  1389. within them

  1390. I will

  1391. write it

  1392. on their

  1393. hearts

  1394. and I

  1395. will be

  1396. their

  1397. God

  1398. and they

  1399. shall be

  1400. my

  1401. people

  1402. and no

  1403. longer

  1404. shall

  1405. each

  1406. teach

  1407. his

  1408. neighbour

  1409. and each

  1410. his

  1411. brother

  1412. saying

  1413. know

  1414. the

  1415. Lord

  1416. for they

  1417. shall

  1418. all

  1419. know

  1420. me.

  1421. From the

  1422. least of

  1423. them

  1424. to the

  1425. greatest

  1426. declares

  1427. the

  1428. Lord.

  1429. And then

  1430. here's

  1431. the

  1432. great

  1433. news

  1434. for I

  1435. will

  1436. forgive

  1437. their

  1438. iniquity

  1439. and I

  1440. will

  1441. remember

  1442. their

  1443. sin

  1444. no

  1445. more.

  1446. God

  1447. said

  1448. the

  1449. problem

  1450. of the

  1451. !

  1452. covenant

  1453. which is the

  1454. problem

  1455. that we

  1456. see in

  1457. Malachi

    Malachi 2 chapter mention

  1458. chapter 2

  1459. is that

  1460. Israel

  1461. broke

  1462. it.

  1463. They

  1464. violated

  1465. it

  1466. by

  1467. persistent

  1468. deliberate

  1469. willful

  1470. obedience

  1471. disobedience.

  1472. But God

  1473. says I

  1474. am making

  1475. a new

  1476. one and

  1477. it

  1478. will be

  1479. totally

  1480. different.

  1481. In the

  1482. new

  1483. one he

  1484. says my

  1485. law will

  1486. be on

  1487. the

  1488. people's

  1489. hearts.

  1490. In the

  1491. new

  1492. one my

  1493. people

  1494. will

  1495. all

  1496. know

  1497. me.

  1498. In

  1499. the

  1500. new

  1501. one I

  1502. will

  1503. forgive

  1504. my

  1505. people's

  1506. wickedness

  1507. and I

  1508. will

  1509. remember

  1510. their

  1511. sins

  1512. no

  1513. more.

  1514. And

  1515. that

  1516. was

  1517. Israel's

  1518. only

  1519. hope.

  1520. They

  1521. couldn't

  1522. repair

  1523. the

  1524. old

  1525. covenant.

  1526. No

  1527. amount

  1528. of

  1529. repentance

  1530. would

  1531. make

  1532. it

  1533. right.

  1534. They

  1535. wrecked

  1536. it.

  1537. They

  1538. needed

  1539. a

  1540. new

  1541. one.

  1542. They

  1543. needed

  1544. a

  1545. new

  1546. one

  1547. that

  1548. only

  1549. God

  1550. could

  1551. make.

  1552. That's

  1553. precisely

  1554. what

  1555. God

  1556. has

  1557. promised

  1558. to

  1559. do.

  1560. As we

  1561. read

  1562. in

  1563. Hebrews

    Hebrews 8 chapter mention

  1564. chapter

  1565. 8.

  1566. It's

  1567. not

  1568. just

  1569. what

  1570. he's

  1571. promised

  1572. to

  1573. do,

  1574. is

  1575. it?

  1576. It's

  1577. what

  1578. he's

  1579. done

  1580. because

  1581. on

  1582. the

  1583. night

  1584. before

  1585. he

  1586. was

  1587. betrayed,

  1588. Jesus

  1589. took the

  1590. bread and

  1591. said,

  1592. this is

  1593. my

  1594. body.

  1595. He

  1596. took

  1597. the

  1598. cup

  1599. and

  1600. said,

  1601. this

  1602. is

  1603. the

  1604. cup

  1605. of

  1606. the

  1607. new

  1608. covenant,

  1609. which

  1610. is

  1611. shed,

  1612. which is

  1613. my

  1614. blood,

  1615. which is

  1616. shed for

  1617. the

  1618. forgiveness

  1619. of

  1620. sins.

  1621. It's

  1622. what

  1623. he's

  1624. done

  1625. in the

  1626. Lord

  1627. Jesus.

  1628. He's

  1629. seen the

  1630. disobedience

  1631. of Israel,

  1632. he's

  1633. seen all

  1634. of my

  1635. disobedience

  1636. too,

  1637. he's

  1638. aware

  1639. this

  1640. morning

  1641. of your

  1642. brokenness

  1643. and your

  1644. frailty

  1645. and your

  1646. rebellion.

  1647. He knows

  1648. that we

  1649. would probably

  1650. wreck the

  1651. new

  1652. covenant

  1653. if it

  1654. was up

  1655. to us.

  1656. And

  1657. he's

  1658. brought us

  1659. into a

  1660. covenant

  1661. with his

  1662. son,

  1663. the Lord

  1664. Jesus.

  1665. The

  1666. perfect

  1667. priest

  1668. has made

  1669. us

  1670. clean

  1671. and it

  1672. is a

  1673. covenant

  1674. that we

  1675. cannot

  1676. break.

  1677. And

  1678. so we

  1679. do not

  1680. stand

  1681. this

  1682. morning

  1683. before

  1684. him

  1685. as

  1686. covenant

  1687. breakers.

  1688. And that's

  1689. an incredible

  1690. truth,

  1691. isn't it?

  1692. We come

  1693. to the

  1694. table

  1695. as those

  1696. who are

  1697. in Christ

  1698. washed,

  1699. perfect,

  1700. spotless,

  1701. blameless,

  1702. holy.

  1703. And that

  1704. is

  1705. God's

  1706. covenant

  1707. with us.

  1708. And while

  1709. we break

  1710. covenants,

  1711. he doesn't

  1712. break covenant

  1713. with us.

  1714. And this

  1715. is a covenant

  1716. that God

  1717. is very,

  1718. very serious

  1719. about.

  1720. I suspect

  1721. that Hebrews

    Hebrews 8 chapter mention

  1722. chapter 8

  1723. was a

  1724. chapter that

  1725. Mark Twain

  1726. wasn't

  1727. bothered by.

  1728. It's

  1729. black and

  1730. white though.

  1731. It's

  1732. crystal

  1733. clear.

  1734. It's a

  1735. word from

  1736. God, a

  1737. word of

  1738. great hope,

  1739. a word of

  1740. wonderful

  1741. reassurance

  1742. and true

  1743. freedom.

  1744. For those

  1745. who've

  1746. called out

  1747. to the

  1748. Lord Jesus

  1749. this morning,

  1750. who

  1751. recognised

  1752. their guilt

  1753. and their

  1754. brokenness

  1755. and have

  1756. asked him

  1757. to forgive

  1758. them.

  1759. God says

  1760. this to

  1761. you,

  1762. he has

  1763. forgiven

  1764. your

  1765. iniquities

  1766. and he

  1767. remembers

  1768. your sin

  1769. no more.

  1770. Let's

  1771. pray.

  1772. Let's

  1773. Thank you.
